- 0:00what is shutter speed well it may seem
- 0:03like the answer is obvious there's more
- 0:05to shutter speed than meets the eye
- 0:06let's take a closer look shutter speed
- 0:09is one of the three pillars of
- 0:10Photography the other two being ISO and
- 0:13aperture also known as exposure time
- 0:16shutter speed is defined as the length
- 0:18of time the image sensor in a camera is
- 0:20exposed to incoming light before we go
- 0:23more in depth however let's take a look
- 0:25at the different parts of the camera
- 0:27that contribute to taking a photo in a
- 0:30standard DSLR when you press the shutter
- 0:32button a mirror flips up allowing light
- 0:34to pass into the camera instead of the
- 0:36viewfinder once the mirror is flipped
- 0:38upwards a small door will move from top
- 0:41to bottom exposing the sensor beneath
- 0:43after that another door will fall down
- 0:46covering up the entire sensor after the
- 0:48second door closes your mirror will fall
- 0:50back into place the doors will then
- 0:52reset to their original positions
- 0:54underneath the longer the shutter is
- 0:56kept open the more light will enter the
- 0:58camera in auto mode cameras will meter
- 1:01the scene and determine an adequate
- 1:03shutter speed to keep the picture from
- 1:04becoming either over or underexposed you
- 1:07can manually change the shutter speed by
- 1:10either putting the camera in shutter
- 1:12priority mode which will let you change
- 1:14shutter speed letting the camera
- 1:16calculate ISO and aperture or full
- 1:18manual mode which gives you full control
- 1:21over all your camera settings shutter
- 1:23speeds are measured in fractions of a
- 1:25second when under 1 second for example 1
- 1:28over4 displayed on the camera means the
- 1:30shutter speed is 1/4 a second whereas 1
- 1:33over 250 means the shutter speed is 1
- 1:36250th of a second most cameras can
- 1:39handle shutter speeds as fast as 1/
- 1:4114,000 of a second or sometimes even as
- 1:44high as 1 18,000 of a second and shutter
- 1:47speeds as long as 30 seconds longer
- 1:50shutter speeds can be achieved using a
- 1:51function known as bulb mode where the
- 1:54shutter speed is determined by the
- 1:55length of time the shutter button is
- 1:57activated either manually or through a
- 1:59remote trigger it's good to know what
- 2:01effects different shutter speeds have as
- 2:03it can affect the type of picture
- 2:05produced short shutter speeds often
- 2:08quicker than 1 1,000th of a second are
- 2:10fast enough to capture the fast movement
- 2:12of Wildlife and sports and freeze water
- 2:15droplets and small particles for
- 2:18everyday photography shutter speeds
- 2:20around 1/1 100th of a second are fast
- 2:23enough to keep subjects from blurring if
- 2:25you're shooting handheld longer shutter
- 2:27speeds may also cause your shaky hand to
- 2:30blur the photo newer lenses from most
- 2:32manufacturers have attempted to solve
- 2:34this problem by introducing vibration
- 2:37reduction technology and the lenses to
- 2:39correct for minor shakes night
- 2:41photography will often utilize longer
- 2:43shutter speeds to capture as much light
- 2:46as possible shutter speeds as long as 20
- 2:48or 30 seconds may even be used to take
- 2:51pictures of the Milky Way knowing the
- 2:53principles of shutter speed will allow
- 2:54you to make better decisions about how
- 2:56you want your picture to look whether
- 2:58you're freezing the action creating a
- 3:00Time Warp effect letting in little light
- 3:03or as much as you can though it's a very
- 3:05basic concept of Photography it is no
- 3:08less important than making a fantastic
