- 0:06Welcome to a new episode on Historia,
- 0:09your platform for dissecting global
- 0:11conflicts and unpacking complex
- 0:13geopolitical balances. Today, we take
- 0:15you straight to the heart of the Middle
- 0:17East, where military strikes and
- 0:19delicate diplomatic backchannels collide
- 0:21between Washington and Tehran, while a
- 0:23heavyweight global power maneuvers
- 0:25quietly in the shadows, the Chinese
- 0:27dragon. Stay with us until the end for
- 0:30this full strategic briefing. Once
- 0:32again, the familiar drama plays out. The
- 0:34United States strikes military targets
- 0:37in Iran in a limited and precise manner,
- 0:39and Tehran responds in a calculated
- 0:41fashion with missiles and drones
- 0:43targeting American bases in Jordan,
- 0:46Iraq, Bahrain, and Kuwait. Meanwhile,
- 0:48the entire region holds its breath,
- 0:51watching for any retaliation should a
- 0:52missile or drone strike occur, whether
- 0:55by mistake or by design. Following a
- 0:58perplexing statement by Israeli Defense
- 1:00Minister Israel Katz, "They love to
- 1:02attack during Jewish holidays because
- 1:04they hate Jews." It remains difficult to
- 1:07draw any solid conclusions regarding the
- 1:09nature of the response, the essential
- 1:11conditions for its execution, or whether
- 1:14Katz can truly deliver on his pledge
- 1:16that if they attack us, we will respond
- 1:18with tremendous force, regardless of
- 1:21anyone else. These skirmishes coincide
- 1:23with threatening remarks and posts from
- 1:25Donald Trump about an anticipated
- 1:27devastating American strike against
- 1:30Iran. Yet, Iran counters with a warning
- 1:32that its new strategy in the diplomatic
- 1:34war and confronting the economic
- 1:36blockade will harm its adversaries, as
- 1:39stated yesterday by Mohsen Rezaei,
- 1:41Secretary of the Expediency Discernment
- 1:43Council. Still, in public discourse, it
- 1:46is difficult to identify any genuinely
- 1:48new strategy from either Iran or the
- 1:51United States that moves beyond violent,
- 1:53contained skirmishes that settle
- 1:55nothing. Until recently, Trump's moves
- 1:58appeared aimed at forcing Iran back to
- 2:00the negotiating table on his own terms,
- 2:02most notably reopening the Strait of
- 2:05Hormuz without restrictions. However, he
- 2:07has lately suggested that any deal with
- 2:09Iran would be essentially meaningless.
- 2:12Conversely, Iran, which froze the
- 2:14memorandum of understanding on July 18th
- 2:16citing American violations, is now the
- 2:19party seeking to revive it. This comes
- 2:21under preconditions that include halting
- 2:23the war on all fronts, including
- 2:26Lebanon, withdrawing US forces from
- 2:27Iran's immediate perimeter, securing
- 2:29prior commitment to compensate Tehran
- 2:31for accrued damages, and lifting the new
- 2:34economic blockade. While some of these
- 2:35conditions were originally part of the
- 2:37memorandum signed by Trump, their
- 2:39execution was intended to follow the
- 2:41agreement rather than serve as
- 2:43preconditions for talks. Pakistan and
- 2:45Qatar continue their efforts to bridge
- 2:47the divide, a diplomatic push far
- 2:50broader than the mere transit through
- 2:51the Strait of Hormuz. It is widely
- 2:54understood that these mediation efforts
- 2:56would not have resumed without a green
- 2:58light from Washington. Trump finds
- 3:00himself in a position where the economic
- 3:02war launched against Iran yields no
- 3:05immediate breakthrough, instead
- 3:06deepening divisions within Tehran's
- 3:08leadership between those advocating a
- 3:11return to talks based on the memorandum
- 3:13of understanding and hardliners
- 3:15demanding a resolute stance despite
- 3:17disrupted navigation in the Strait of
- 3:18Hormuz. Amid this diplomatic
- 3:20entanglement, a heavyweight player has
- 3:23yet to fully show his hand, one who may
- 3:25hold the master key. Chinese President
- 3:27Xi Jinping arrived in Cairo on an
- 3:30official three-day visit accompanied by
- 3:32a high-level delegation. Officially,
- 3:34this visit responds to President Abdel
- 3:36Fattah el-Sisi's trip to Beijing aiming
- 3:39to expand bilateral economic and
- 3:41military cooperation. The two nations
- 3:43mark 70 years of relations, a
- 3:45partnership that has expanded
- 3:47significantly since 2014 under what is
- 3:50known in Egypt as the golden decade.
- 3:52China stepped in to support Egypt's
- 3:54economy during a critical crunch in 2016
- 3:57by depositing $2 billion in Egyptian
- 3:59banks to bolster foreign reserves, a
- 4:01prerequisite for securing an IMF loan.
- 4:05Furthermore, Beijing has invested
- 4:06approximately $8 billion
- 4:08in the Suez Canal Economic Zone,
- 4:10contributed to the construction of the
- 4:12new administrative capital, and
- 4:14established thousands of active Chinese
- 4:16enterprises across Egypt. Last year,
- 4:18Egypt acquired an air defense system
- 4:20from China, and the Egyptian and Chinese
- 4:23militaries have engaged in joint
- 4:24maneuvers, the latest of which concluded
- 4:26recently and will continue this month.
- 4:29During this visit, both sides are
- 4:30expected to sign multi-billion dollar
- 4:32deals to establish artificial
- 4:34intelligence hubs and supply Egypt with
- 4:372,000 advanced computing chips to
- 4:39upgrade both civilian and military
- 4:41infrastructure alongside expanded
- 4:43defense procurement. Yet, Xi Jinping's
- 4:45visit to Egypt extends well beyond a
- 4:47routine display of bilateral commerce.
- 4:50Egypt serves as an anchor for China's
- 4:52expanding footprint across a region
- 4:54where American dominance is visibly
- 4:56waning. The Chinese president arrived in
- 4:58Cairo fresh from the Shanghai
- 5:00Cooperation Organization summit in
- 5:02Kyrgyzstan, where he met with Turkish,
- 5:04Russian, and Iranian counterparts.
- 5:07Reports indicate that Iranian President
- 5:09Masoud Pezeshkian conveyed Tehran's
- 5:11readiness to re-engage with the
- 5:13memorandum of understanding if the
- 5:15United States complies, though it
- 5:17remains unconfirmed whether he directly
- 5:19solicited Chinese mediation. Other
- 5:22reports suggest Arabian Gulf states are
- 5:24actively urging Beijing to mediate
- 5:26between Tehran and Washington following
- 5:28the stall in Pakistani efforts. A
- 5:30prospective summit between Xi Jinping
- 5:32and Trump in Washington looms roughly a
- 5:34month away following their previous
- 5:36engagement in Beijing. Washington aims
- 5:39to secure Chinese backing to ensure
- 5:41unimpeded navigation in the Strait of
- 5:43Hormuz and scale back commercial ties
- 5:45with Tehran, particularly crude oil
- 5:47purchases, efforts that yielded little
- 5:49progress in prior rounds. During his
- 5:52meetings in Cairo, Xi Jinping stated
- 5:54that China stands ready to work with
- 5:56regional states to safeguard shipping
- 5:58corridors, foster development, and
- 6:00diffuse flash points. While China has
- 6:03not joined any military coalition
- 6:04patrolling the Arabian Gulf or the Red
- 6:07Sea and shows no intention of deploying
- 6:09intervention forces, its approach relies
- 6:11squarely on regional dialogue rather
- 6:13than alignment with Washington. Xi
- 6:15Jinping underscored this stance clearly.
- 6:17"We must adhere to the principle of
- 6:19Middle Eastern sovereignty, oppose
- 6:21external interference, and support
- 6:23regional nations in fostering
- 6:25independent dialogue regarding peace and
- 6:27security." In terms of leverage, China
- 6:30wields considerable clout as the primary
- 6:32buyer of Iranian crude. Simultaneously,
- 6:35it supplies dual-use and military
- 6:37technologies to Tehran using local
- 6:39currencies, bypassing the US dollar.
- 6:41Back in 2021, the two states inked a
- 6:4425-year comprehensive strategic
- 6:46partnership worth nearly $400 billion
- 6:49though implementation has progressed
- 6:51cautiously due to US sanction concerns.
- 6:54Politically, Beijing continues to back
- 6:56Tehran, condemning Trump's economic
- 6:58warfare, and affirming its resolve to
- 7:00protect its core commercial interests.
- 7:02Washington appears to take Beijing's
- 7:04warnings seriously, having largely held
- 7:06back from targeting tier one Chinese
- 7:08financial institutions and conglomerates
- 7:10with sweeping sanctions. The pivotal
- 7:12question remains, will this high-stakes
- 7:15diplomatic maneuvering between the two
- 7:17global powers pave the way for a
- 7:18political settlement that secures the
- 7:20Strait of Hormuz and redefines the
- 7:22regional balance of power?
- 7:25Can Beijing's quiet diplomacy diffuse
- 7:27the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz and
- 7:29redefine the regional balance of power,
- 7:31or is the Middle East locked in an
- 7:33endless cycle of escalation? Share your
