  1. 0:00okay culture in the workplace um
  2. 0:03so does society's culture impact the
  3. 0:06values found in the workplace
  4. 0:08and yes of course it does you know and
  5. 0:11um
  6. 0:12there are different dimensions that
  7. 0:14people look at um
  8. 0:16our research has been done on what the
  9. 0:18effect is
  10. 0:20um you can look at i wonder if these
  11. 0:22slides are gonna
  12. 0:23yeah let's these slide this slide talks
  13. 0:25about a little bit more
  14. 0:26if we look at the power distance and
  15. 0:28it's the dimension
  16. 0:30um focused on how society deals with the
  17. 0:33fact that people
  18. 0:35are unequal in physical intellectual
  19. 0:37capabilities
  20. 0:38uh a high-powered distance cultures were
  21. 0:40found in countries
  22. 0:42that led inadequacies grow over time
  23. 0:48into inadequacies of power and wealth so
  24. 0:52low-power distance cultures uh were
  25. 0:55founded
  26. 0:56in societies that try to play down such
  27. 0:59inequalities as much as possible so
  28. 1:02it basically looks at you know is your
  29. 1:04society supporting
  30. 1:06um sort of stratification of
  31. 1:09um the intellectual capabilities of the
  32. 1:12citizens you have
  33. 1:14a small group of highly intellectually
  34. 1:15highly educated people
  35. 1:17uh and then on the offside respection
  36. 1:22of the spectrum a number of uneducated
  37. 1:25um very poor you know we're talking
  38. 1:28not past elementary school level
  39. 1:30education you know so the more you can
  40. 1:33narrow
  41. 1:33this power distance the more um
  42. 1:37equitable the society becomes and of
  43. 1:39course a common theme throughout this
  44. 1:41lecture individualism versus collect
  45. 1:44collectivism
  46. 1:45and these are relationships that we
  47. 1:46talked about before uh
  48. 1:48individual intelli into uh individualism
  49. 1:52in societies versus collective
  50. 1:53collectivism and how that emphasizes and
  51. 1:56can
  52. 1:57a society's uh culture and
  53. 2:00in in turn its economy
  54. 2:03um uncertainty avoidance
  55. 2:07where the extent which different
  56. 2:10cultures
  57. 2:11socialized their members into accepting
  58. 2:15ambiguous situations and tolerating
  59. 2:18uncertainty
  60. 2:19members of high uncertainty avoidance
  61. 2:21cultures
  62. 2:22place a premium job security career
  63. 2:25patterns
  64. 2:26retirement and benefits they're also had
  65. 2:28a strong need for rules and regulations
  66. 2:31sort of they like to be
  67. 2:35feel more secure and and know exactly
  68. 2:38they don't want to have to think for
  69. 2:40themselves as much they want things to
  70. 2:41be spelled out and spoon fed for them
  71. 2:44uh masculinity versus
  72. 2:47femininity and this is looking at the
  73. 2:50roles between
  74. 2:51masculine and gender um so masculine
  75. 2:55cultures where sexuals are shy
  76. 2:57are sharply um
  77. 3:00their roles are very much different and
  78. 3:02their expectations are different
  79. 3:04and you have different rules from male
  80. 3:06male genders to female genders
  81. 3:09you know for example in the united
  82. 3:11states in the 50s you know this was the
  83. 3:13case where
  84. 3:14men went to work women stayed home and
  85. 3:16cleaned the house took care of the
  86. 3:17children
  87. 3:18did the cleaning of the laundry and
  88. 3:21things of that nature
  89. 3:22uh and then through an economic revolu
  90. 3:24uh change in the 70s and 80s
  91. 3:28a women became more equal and then the
  92. 3:30the role
  93. 3:32um changed and the the big turning point
  94. 3:34of this was a movie called mr mom
  95. 3:37where um michael keaton uh gets laid off
  96. 3:41and has to stay home with the kids
  97. 3:43and his wife terry garr goes out into
  98. 3:45the workforce
  99. 3:46and works and that was sort of really
  100. 3:47the turning point in american society
  101. 3:49where
  102. 3:49more and more women entered and stayed
  103. 3:52in the workforce
  104. 3:53and contributed as equal parties uh
  105. 3:56and and this this uh like this dimension
  106. 3:59between genders
  107. 4:00was reduced greatly and it's still there
  108. 4:02and there's issues of
  109. 4:04women's unfair pay and and there's still
  110. 4:06prejudice there but
  111. 4:08the society is moving to more of a
  112. 4:10gender gender
  113. 4:11the american society is moving more to
  114. 4:13the gender neutral society where
  115. 4:15men and women have the same respect and
  116. 4:17rights and the same opportunities
  117. 4:19and part of that reason this occurred is
  118. 4:21the economics of the fact that
  119. 4:23really most people could not um one
  120. 4:27salary could not support a household
  121. 4:28anymore two
  122. 4:30both husband and wife had to work
  123. 4:33uh to support a family and support a
  124. 4:35household in in the changing economic
  125. 4:37times because we're moving from a
  126. 4:38society where
  127. 4:41the pay for an individual
  128. 4:45routinely was sufficient to finance us
  129. 4:48a family where today it's really
  130. 4:50difficult for one person to finance the
  131. 4:52entire family
  132. 4:53two people working and earning money is
  133. 4:56is the norm in today's society and this
  134. 4:58has really
  135. 4:58melted away at these gender roles
  136. 5:04and then
  137. 5:10uh confucian dynasm captures the
  138. 5:13attitudes towards time
  139. 5:15um persistence uh
  140. 5:19ordering by status protection of face
  141. 5:22respect for tradition um
  142. 5:24reciprocation of gifts and favors so
  143. 5:26it's another type of cultural
  144. 5:29idea in the workplace of what is
  145. 5:33um looking towards tradition
  146. 5:37uh there's a lot of pride in you know as
  147. 5:39far as respect for
  148. 5:41saving face and and your ego and and
  149. 5:44things of that nature
  150. 5:46nature it's just another a way of kind
  151. 5:48of looking at culture in the working
  152. 5:50place as far as what's expected of you
  153. 5:53and what's
  154. 5:54what is generally considered appropriate
  155. 5:56for you to behave
  156. 5:58okay if we look at these
  157. 6:03these top four things they described
  158. 6:05before by different country and this is
  159. 6:06a scale from one to a hundred where
  160. 6:08the higher the number the more
  161. 6:12intense the closer they are to the
  162. 6:16higher end of the chart
  163. 6:18as far as we're talking about power
  164. 6:19distance the more distance there is
  165. 6:22in power um between the people of the uh
  166. 6:25um
  167. 6:26the country from high club from
  168. 6:29um people with the higher educations and
  169. 6:33advantages compared to lower
  170. 6:35uncertainty avoidance the higher on this
  171. 6:37scale the more they want to avoid
  172. 6:39uncertainty
  173. 6:40individualism the higher in this scale
  174. 6:42the more individualistic
  175. 6:43they are and you can see if you look at
  176. 6:45the united states we have one of the
  177. 6:47highest ratings of individualism
  178. 6:49uh we have sort of a lower rating on
  179. 6:52power distance because
  180. 6:53of our education system that tries to
  181. 6:56educate everyone equally and provide
  182. 6:58good opportunities
  183. 7:00uh the avoidance uncertainty avoidance
  184. 7:02is sort of in the middle
  185. 7:04where we're not the most risk-taking
  186. 7:06population but we still
  187. 7:08uh like our securities and do take a
  188. 7:10certain amount of risks
  189. 7:11uh masculinity you can see that the
  190. 7:13american society is a little bit
  191. 7:15still male oriented where other
  192. 7:17societies are less male oriented
  193. 7:20where you could look at a society like
  194. 7:21the netherlands or denmark where they're
  195. 7:23little they're a little bit
  196. 7:24more female feminine oriented and less
  197. 7:27masculine oriented so
  198. 7:28interesting chart of how things
  199. 7:32of these workplace culture factors are
  200. 7:34around the world
  201. 7:37now
