  1. 0:00Look, the technique I use
  2. 0:04consists of a first phase, where you
  3. 0:07sit down, close your eyes, and start
  4. 0:11observing your breathing. You start
  5. 0:14observing your breathing and thoughts
  6. 0:17and sensations will appear, but you
  7. 0:20don't repress them. For example, if a
  8. 0:23thought appears, you let it pass and
  9. 0:25return to your breathing. Another
  10. 0:27thought appears, you let it pass, you
  11. 0:29observe how it is born and dies, and
  12. 0:31you return to your breathing,
  13. 0:33which by the way is a common technique
  14. 0:35in Buddhism. It's exactly what is done
  15. 0:37at the first level in Buddhism. This
  16. 0:40prepares you, it prepares you, it
  17. 0:41prepares you because in the first phase
  18. 0:44you have to learn to concentrate, you
  19. 0:46have to learn to focus your attention,
  20. 0:49you have to clear your mind,
  21. 0:51and the way to clear the mind is not by
  22. 0:53fighting against it,
  23. 0:54nor is it by not being able to get rid
  24. 0:57of it. How can you get rid of it? And
  25. 0:59if you fight against it, that's the
  26. 1:01worst thing you can do, because then if
  27. 1:02you don't
  28. 1:03think, you can't do that. You
  29. 1:04strengthen it, but I don't think it's
  30. 1:07bad to have a mind,
  31. 1:09man. It is necessary to have an
  32. 1:11understanding, it is wonderful because
  33. 1:13it would be disastrous to be left
  34. 1:14without this part,
  35. 1:15but the intention is to transcend a
  36. 1:17level.
  37. 1:18Sure, but this mind that bothers us,
  38. 1:20these repetitive thoughts, I think that
  39. 1:23we do have to clear them and the way to
  40. 1:25clear them is to accept them.
  41. 1:29Paradoxically, it is accepting them and
  42. 1:32letting them pass and letting them
  43. 1:34surface and surface and surface until a
  44. 1:37moment comes when they begin to calm
  45. 1:39down and then one can merge with the
  46. 1:41breath, be at that point,
  47. 1:43at that...
  48. 1:44well, that is the first phase of the
  49. 1:46technique. A second phase consists of
  50. 1:50beginning, for example, to observe your
  51. 1:53thoughts, your body, your sensations,
  52. 1:56unify your body, go through your body,
  53. 2:00observe part by part, feel, accept,
  54. 2:03without fighting against your body,
  55. 2:06without judging it, without analyzing
  56. 2:09it; but simply, for example, after you
  57. 2:13are in this already concentrated
  58. 2:15breathing, you begin to feel the top of
  59. 2:18your head, the tactile sensations, the
  60. 2:21sensations of the surface. Then you
  61. 2:24begin to feel each part, each part of
  62. 2:26your body, you go through it as if you
  63. 2:29were bathing it, going over it little
  64. 2:31by little until there comes a moment
  65. 2:33when you can observe your body as a
  66. 2:35whole. It's like recovering your body
  67. 2:38image. Then you observe your body, you
  68. 2:41are a witness to your body at the same
  69. 2:43time that you are feeling it. When you
  70. 2:46manage to do this, this, Buddhism,
  71. 2:48because it is a Buddhist technique, is
  72. 2:50called bipasan. It is a very
  73. 2:52extraordinary way of healing, of
  74. 2:55cleansing yourself, in addition to
  75. 2:57placing yourself at the point of
  76. 2:59observation where you can perceive your
  77. 3:02entire body as a whole. You are
  78. 3:05accepting everything that happens there
  79. 3:07, but you are in a transcendent
  80. 3:09position with respect to it.
  81. 3:11Exactly.
  82. 3:11The next step is to begin in the
  83. 3:14technique that I practice, it is to
  84. 3:17begin to activate a simultaneous
  85. 3:19perception in such a way that you
  86. 3:22perceive your entire body with all its
  87. 3:25bodily sensations and simultaneously
  88. 3:28your breathing. Exactly.
  89. 3:30The next step involves, for example,
  90. 3:33paying attention to your thoughts. Then
  91. 3:36, you perceive your thoughts. What
  92. 3:37thoughts are there? What relationships
  93. 3:39are there between one thought and
  94. 3:40another? What networks of thoughts are
  95. 3:44happening? And you perceive them with
  96. 3:47the same attitude that you perceived
  97. 3:49your breathing, your body, without
  98. 3:52judgment, without analysis, accepting
  99. 3:54all the thoughts that occur, but
  100. 3:57placing yourself as a witness to them.
  101. 4:00You are at the same time feeling,
  102. 4:02living your thoughts, but at the point
  103. 4:05of transcendence with respect to them.
  104. 4:09The next phase involves simultaneously
  105. 4:13observing your body,
  106. 4:15your breathing
  107. 4:17and all your mental processes. A
  108. 4:19simultaneous observation.
  109. 4:22Well, once you finish this, that you
  110. 4:24can carry out this simultaneous
  111. 4:27observation, you begin to pay attention
  112. 4:29to your emotions. What emotional
  113. 4:32changes are there? What are the
  114. 4:34emotional tones? the emotional
  115. 4:36luminosity, the qualities of the
  116. 4:39emotion and you observe your emotions
  117. 4:41with the same attitude with which you
  118. 4:44observed your thoughts, your body and
  119. 4:47your breathing. When you achieve this
  120. 4:50observation of your emotions, you
  121. 4:52simultaneously observe your breathing,
  122. 4:55your body, your thoughts and your
  123. 4:57emotions. Then you begin to observe
  124. 5:00your internal images in the same way
  125. 5:03until you achieve a perception, an
  126. 5:06observation in the same way as you
  127. 5:08observed the other, without judgment,
  128. 5:11without analysis of your internal
  129. 5:13images and simultaneously observe your
  130. 5:16breathing, your body, your thoughts,
  131. 5:19your emotions and your internal images.
  132. 5:22But the next step, sorry, the next step
  133. 5:25consists of observing the sounds of the
  134. 5:28environment
  135. 5:31and observing them in the same way in
  136. 5:33which you observed your thoughts, your
  137. 5:35emotions, your body and making a
  138. 5:37simultaneous observation of the
  139. 5:39environment, body, emotions, thoughts,
  140. 5:42etc. Then observe the visual world.
  141. 5:45There comes a moment when you can make
  142. 5:48a simultaneous observation of all the
  143. 5:51components of your experience,
  144. 5:53something very strange happens. There
  145. 5:56is a kind of threshold that is crossed
  146. 5:59and you connect with yourself. But who
  147. 6:02is the self with whom you connect? It
  148. 6:06cannot be described because it is
  149. 6:08unifying everything. Somehow, the
  150. 6:10technique of incorporating observation
  151. 6:13into observation and making them
  152. 6:16simultaneous brings you to a threshold
  153. 6:19where all the conceptions you had about
  154. 6:22yourself disappear and you connect with
  155. 6:25something that is beyond those
  156. 6:28conceptions, but much closer to
  157. 6:30yourself than ever before. And you
  158. 6:33realize, furthermore, that this self is
  159. 6:36inseparable from the whole.
  160. 6:38And what is the whole?
