- 0:00Welcome to this new automotive news
- 0:02video for Friday, November 6, 2026.
- 0:05Today, we’ll talk about BYD, which could
- 0:07quite simply be banned in Europe. We’ll
- 0:09also discuss Mercedes, whose brand-new
- 0:11GLC is already hit by a major problem,
- 0:13and Renault, which is launching a
- 0:14brand-new internal combustion pickup
- 0:16that costs less than a Renault 5. And
- 0:18finally, we’ll talk about Citroën, which
- 0:20has completely lost its mind and is
- 0:22launching a new SUV for over € 50,000. I
- 0:24hope you find today’s topics interesting
- 0:26. If so, I’m counting on you, as usual,
- 0:28to show it by leaving a like on this
- 0:30video, subscribing for the next ones,
- 0:31boosting this one if the option appears
- 0:33for you, and of course, leaving a
- 0:35comment with your opinion on today's
- 0:37news. But before we get to today’s news
- 0:38, let’s talk about the sponsor of this
- 0:40video, carVertical. With gas prices
- 0:42having been well over € 2 per liter for
- 0:44several months, it might be the right
- 0:46time to switch to electric. Especially
- 0:48since now, on the French used car market
- 0:49, we are finding more and more electric
- 0:51cars at really affordable prices. So,
- 0:52there are some great deals to be made.
- 0:54But be careful, because there are also
- 0:55some serious traps to avoid. For example
- 0:57, look at this Tesla Model 3. Thanks to
- 0:59its carVertical report, we discover that
- 1:01it has been in an accident in the past.
- 1:02And that is far from trivial, because a
- 1:04car that has already been in an accident
- 1:06can lose value.
- 1:08It can have defects that will only
- 1:09appear later, especially if the repairs
- 1:11were poorly done.
- 1:12But above all, it will also be a more
- 1:14difficult car for you to resell if you
- 1:16ever want to get rid of it. carVertical
- 1:18also allows you to check for mileage
- 1:20inconsistencies—though everything looks
- 1:22fine on that front for this car—and also
- 1:24allows you to check for theft history.
- 1:26In addition to that, there is a feature
- 1:28that is particularly interesting for
- 1:29electric cars, as carVertical now offers
- 1:31battery information and range estimates
- 1:33, especially in winter or on the highway
- 1:35. This helps you better know if an
- 1:37electric car will really suit your needs
- 1:38, beyond the figures announced by the
- 1:40manufacturer. So, before buying your
- 1:42next used car, whether it’s electric or
- 1:43not, remember to check its history on
- 1:45carVertical with the code "Equin".
- 1:47You’ll get a 20%discount. The link to
- 1:49access the site will be in the
- 1:50description of this video. It's also in
- 1:52the pinned comment, but you can also go
- 1:54there by scanning the QR code appearing
- 1:55on your screen.
- 1:56And of course, if CarVertical finds no
- 1:58info on your car, your credits are
- 2:00refunded and remain usable for 6 months
- 2:02. Thanks to CarVertical for supporting
- 2:03my channel, and let's get started with
- 2:05today's news.
- 2:06We'll start this video by talking a
- 2:08little about BYD, which could quite
- 2:09simply be banned in Europe.
- 2:12A decision that could come from the
- 2:14European Commission, since several MEPs
- 2:17have asked the Commission to set up an
- 2:19inquiry commission to investigate the
- 2:21risks posed by BYD cars.
- 2:25The problem with BYD cars is that, like
- 2:27all other very modern cars, they are
- 2:29equipped with cameras for driver
- 2:30assistance and safety systems as well as
- 2:32for autonomous driving.
- 2:35They also have microphones inside the
- 2:37cars for emergency calls, black boxes
- 2:40which are now mandatory in Europe that
- 2:43record a lot of driving data, and
- 2:45onboard computers connected to the
- 2:48internet. What European lawmakers fear
- 2:51is that some of the information
- 2:52collected by the BYDs driving around
- 2:55Europe could be transmitted via the
- 2:57internet to the Chinese government.
- 2:59Imagine, for example, that while driving
- 3:01your BYD, you pass near a nuclear power
- 3:04plant or a military training ground.
- 3:06Your car could film the facilities or
- 3:08the movement of personnel—sensitive data
- 3:11that the European Commission would not
- 3:14want to see end up in the hands of the
- 3:16Chinese government. Especially since
- 3:19this isn't exactly science fiction, as
- 3:22we recall that since 2017, a Chinese law
- 3:26has required all Chinese companies to
- 3:30cooperate with the government by
- 3:33providing all data requested. Over the
- 3:36next six weeks, an investigation will
- 3:38take place to determine to what extent
- 3:40BYD can be considered a dangerous brand
- 3:42.
- 3:43Obviously, BYD defends itself by
- 3:45explaining that all data collected by
- 3:47its cars cannot be accessed by the
- 3:49Chinese government, but it's basically
- 3:51their word against the Commission's.
- 3:54At the end of this investigation,
- 3:55depending on the estimated danger posed
- 3:57by BYD, several measures are being
- 3:59requested by MEPs. The first would be
- 4:01for the European Commission to require
- 4:03the deactivation of certain features on
- 4:06BYD cars sold in Europe, such as data
- 4:08recording or new systems to
- 4:09automatically delete data.
- 4:12For example, if there is a somewhat
- 4:14intermediate risk, it could be that BYD
- 4:15cars are no longer allowed to drive near
- 4:17military bases, which wouldn't be
- 4:19entirely science fiction either.
- 4:21It has already happened elsewhere in the
- 4:23world, for example in Japan.
- 4:25Since October 23rd, BYD brand cars are
- 4:27no longer allowed to pass near military
- 4:29bases. Still at this level of danger,
- 4:31BYD could be banned from public
- 4:33procurement, meaning European
- 4:34administrations could simply no longer
- 4:36be allowed to purchase BYD vehicles.
- 4:39Even if in France, for now, it is not
- 4:40very widespread, know that there are
- 4:42some BYD buses here. This is also the
- 4:43case in Spain. In Italy, they have some
- 4:45BYD cars too, as well as in Romania.
- 4:48Public procurement could therefore no
- 4:50longer be allowed to purchase BYD cars,
- 4:52and in a case of higher, more extreme
- 4:54danger, the BYD brand could simply be
- 4:55banned from being marketed in Europe.
- 4:59And that's not too much science fiction
- 5:01either, since we've already seen other
- 5:02brands, even car brands, be banned
- 5:03almost overnight.
- 5:05For example, Lada, a Russian car brand,
- 5:07has been officially banned from being
- 5:09marketed in Europe since sanctions were
- 5:11put in place by the European Commission
- 5:13when the war between Ukraine and Russia
- 5:15broke out. A ban on BYD in Europe is
- 5:17therefore possible, even if it is
- 5:19currently unlikely.
- 5:21It should be noted that BYD is getting a
- 5:23lot of attention on this subject right
- 5:25now, but let's remember that a few weeks
- 5:27ago, there was a case with Geely,
- 5:29another Chinese brand where soldiers
- 5:31realized that their Geely brand car had
- 5:33recorded very sensitive conversations,
- 5:35even access codes to certain military
- 5:37infrastructure.
- 5:38That BYD might ultimately only be the
- 5:40tip of the iceberg. Because if we have
- 5:42to start banning all brands that present
- 5:44a risk of data leakage to China, well,
- 5:46we have to ban almost all brands, and
- 5:48not just Chinese brands, since,
- 5:49unfortunately, modern European cars rely
- 5:51on a lot of Chinese technology. Even a
- 5:53Renault, for example, is developed in
- 5:55China. It is also often equipped with
- 5:57sensors or software that are partially
- 5:59or totally developed in China. And even
- 6:01brands that don't use too much Chinese
- 6:03technology but belong to Chinese
- 6:05investment funds could ultimately appear
- 6:07suspicious, like Mercedes, for example.
- 6:09So if we start sorting through and
- 6:11banning brands where there's a risk of
- 6:12data leaking to China, well, in the end
- 6:14, almost all brands will be banned from
- 6:16Europe. And since we’re talking about
- 6:18Mercedes, let's discuss their electric
- 6:19GLC, which is facing its first major
- 6:21problem.
- 6:22Some customers of the new electric
- 6:24Mercedes GLC are likely going to be
- 6:26furious, as delivery times are
- 6:27skyrocketing due to new battery-related
- 6:29shortages.
- 6:31The GLC is, in a way, a victim of its
- 6:33own success. It’s a vehicle that’s
- 6:34selling very well, especially in its
- 6:36electric versions, which account for
- 6:38about half of all orders. Mercedes has
- 6:40plenty of customers for this new GLC,
- 6:42but the problem is that they simply
- 6:43cannot get enough batteries to build
- 6:45them. The main culprit in this situation
- 6:47is their battery supplier, the Chinese
- 6:49giant CATL.
- 6:50They have a plant in Hungary that is
- 6:52facing major difficulties, as the
- 6:53factory was more or less shut down by
- 6:55the Hungarian government due to various
- 6:57environmental issues. In short, they
- 6:59can't supply enough batteries to
- 7:01Mercedes in Europe, leaving them no
- 7:03choice but to rely on Chinese batteries
- 7:05also made by CATL, but this time in
- 7:07China. Naturally, this all impacts lead
- 7:10times, since some customers who have
- 7:12already ordered their GLC have to wait
- 7:14up to 7 months. Meanwhile, for new
- 7:16orders, Mercedes is now announcing
- 7:18deliveries for the fourth quarter of
- 7:202027, meaning a one-year wait to receive
- 7:22the GLC you've already paid for. It’s
- 7:24not just the batteries; there is also
- 7:26another supplier based in Morocco that
- 7:27is also having trouble producing the
- 7:29vehicle's electrical wiring harnesses.
- 7:31As a result, even if the order book is
- 7:32filling up, the German factory in Bremen
- 7:34, which is solely responsible for
- 7:36producing the electric GLC, risks seeing
- 7:37its production lines slow down or even
- 7:39pause due to a lack of components.
- 7:41You might say that Mercedes could call
- 7:43on its own European battery manufacturer
- 7:45, ACC, which is a joint venture owned by
- 7:47Stellantis and Mercedes, notably based
- 7:49in northern France. Except that it's
- 7:51exactly the same situation at ACC. There
- 7:53are major delays and long lead times for
- 7:54production there as well, because local
- 7:56output simply hasn't kept up with the
- 7:58volume of demand. By the way, a small
- 8:00detail regarding the electric GLC. It
- 8:02was supposed to arrive in the United
- 8:03States in November 2027.
- 8:05It has finally been pushed back to May
- 8:072030 because Mercedes thinks the
- 8:08American market has absolutely no
- 8:10interest in buying an electric Mercedes
- 8:12GLC.
- 8:13Meanwhile, at Citroën, we are starting
- 8:14to see prices that look more and more
- 8:16like those of Mercedes.
- 8:18At Citroën, they are beginning to offer
- 8:20completely unreasonable prices, as the
- 8:22French manufacturer has just launched a
- 8:25new high-end version of its C5 Aircross
- 8:27called "Prime," with a price that now
- 8:29exceeds 50,000 bucks.
- 8:32You heard that right: € 50,000 for a
- 8:33family SUV from Citroën, even though
- 8:35Citroën is supposed to be the affordable
- 8:37low-cost brand, a bit of a competitor to
- 8:39Dacia, but on the Stellantis side.
- 8:41This new Prime trim is positioned above
- 8:44the Max trim, with a premium of between
- 8:46€ 2,200 and € 3,000 depending on the
- 8:48engine. So, in terms of equipment, it's
- 8:50fair to say that Citroën didn't do
- 8:52things by halves. We find "Advanced
- 8:53Comfort" seats that are electric, heated
- 8:55, ventilated, and even massaging in the
- 8:57front.
- 8:58A large panoramic sunroof, a system that
- 9:00monitors outside air quality, and even a
- 9:02refrigerated storage compartment in the
- 9:04center armrest, not to mention 19-inch
- 9:06wheels, a contrasting black roof, and
- 9:08large digital screens on board.
- 9:10On electric versions, Citroën is also
- 9:12adding a heat pump as standard, which is
- 9:13normally charged at 800 bucks as an
- 9:15option. Mind you, it is heresy in 2026
- 9:17to offer an electric car without a heat
- 9:19pump, while the plug-in hybrid versions
- 9:21benefit from a 7.4 kW charger to speed
- 9:23up charging. On paper, we are getting
- 9:25closer to the features one might expect
- 9:27from a premium SUV. Except that under
- 9:28the hood, it’s not premium, is it? The
- 9:30hybrid versions still use the 145-
- 9:32horsepower 3-cylinder PureTech engine,
- 9:34which starts at 44,100 bucks. Then it's
- 9:36€ 47,000 for the 225-horsepower plug-in
- 9:38hybrid versions, which I believe are
- 9:40also based on the same engine. And for
- 9:42the long-range electric version with 230
- 9:45horsepower, Citroën demands € 51,000
- 9:47from you. Of course, this is the list
- 9:49price, excluding any potential aid or
- 9:51discounts. This is a very strange choice
- 9:53strategically speaking, because remember
- 9:55, alongside this, there is DS, which is
- 9:57supposed to be the premium brand of
- 9:59Stellantis—based more or less or at
- 10:01least historically on Citroëns—that
- 10:03offers similar prices and is really
- 10:04struggling to sell. At the other end of
- 10:06the spectrum, there is Renault, which
- 10:08has just launched a new
- 10:08combustion-engine pickup for € 25,000.
- 10:11This is no joke.
- 10:12Renault has just started selling a new
- 10:14combustion-engine pickup that costs
- 10:15about the price of an electric Renault 5
- 10:17.
- 10:18It is a vehicle that actually exists.
- 10:19It’s called the Renault Niagara. It is a
- 10:22pickup 4.91 meters long, or even 4.94
- 10:24for the large four-wheel-drive version.
- 10:26It's a real off-roader with a double cab
- 10:29, 5 seats, and above all, a huge 900L
- 10:32bed capable of carrying up to 650 kg of
- 10:34cargo. It's a vehicle that can be used
- 10:36just as well for transporting the whole
- 10:37family as it can for work or going on
- 10:39vacation. Under the hood, a 1.3-liter 4
- 10:41-cylinder turbo with 156 horsepower,
- 10:43paired with your choice of a six-speed
- 10:45manual or a dual-clutch automatic
- 10:47transmission. No electric powertrain for
- 10:49the launch, even if a hybrid version is
- 10:50planned later, since we are talking
- 10:52about a purely internal combustion
- 10:53pickup that, despite its fairly low
- 10:54price, is far from stripped down in
- 10:56terms of equipment. Even in the
- 10:57entry-level model, we get airbags,
- 10:59naturally, along with automatic
- 11:00emergency braking, lane-keeping assist,
- 11:01LED headlights, and a 10-inch
- 11:03touchscreen. And on higher versions, you
- 11:05can even get 360-degree cameras,
- 11:06dual-zone air conditioning, and a
- 11:08multimedia system with Google Maps and
- 11:09Gemini artificial intelligence. Now,
- 11:11let's talk about the most interesting
- 11:14part: its price, as this Niagara is
- 11:16marketed starting at € 25,300. That's
- 11:18about the same price as an electric
- 11:19Renault 5. It's even a little bit
- 11:21cheaper. Prices can still climb up to €
- 11:2334,500 for the most equipped versions
- 11:26with four-wheel drive. A price point and
- 11:28a vehicle that might make you dream, but
- 11:30unfortunately, we aren't ready to see it
- 11:32in France, because currently the Niagara
- 11:34, although designed and sold by Renault
- 11:36—a French brand—is not planned to be
- 11:38marketed in Europe. It is a vehicle
- 11:39essentially dedicated to the South
- 11:41American market. In Europe, Renault is
- 11:43betting on overpriced small electric
- 11:44cars, while in Latin America, the brand
- 11:46continues to offer large, relatively
- 11:47affordable internal combustion vehicles
- 11:49. But hey, even if there are no plans
- 11:50for the Niagara in Europe for now, we
- 11:52shouldn't lose hope.
- 11:53Perhaps with the hybrid versions, it
- 11:54will be able to be sold here without
- 11:56being hit too hard by taxes. We're
- 11:58crossing our fingers. We'll see how it
- 11:59turns out. In the meantime, that covers
- 12:00it for today's news. I hope you found
- 12:02the video interesting. If so, don't
- 12:03hesitate to show it by leaving a like,
- 12:05subscribing for future videos, and of
- 12:07course, by taking a quick look at
- 12:08today's video sponsor, which is once
- 12:10again CarVertical. We'll see you
- 12:11tomorrow for the next one.
