  1. 0:06Hello and welcome to this session where
  2. 0:08we're talking about managing online
  3. 0:11classes. Now by this time you will have
  4. 0:15already seen a lot of information about
  5. 0:18uh teaching English as a foreign
  6. 0:19language in general and probably mostly
  7. 0:22will be focused on face-to-face classes.
  8. 0:27So in this particular session, we're
  9. 0:30going to be talking about more
  10. 0:32importantly uh online classes as these
  11. 0:35are going to be something you're going
  12. 0:38to be doing not just with us in your
  13. 0:40teaching practices but for sure when you
  14. 0:43go out there to teach for real. So let
  15. 0:45me share with you our objective for
  16. 0:48today's session.
  17. 0:51As you can see, we're going to be
  18. 0:54talking about the most important
  19. 0:56concepts um that you should consider
  20. 0:58when you're preparing for your online
  21. 1:00teaching. It is different to teaching
  22. 1:03face-to-face classes in so many ways
  23. 1:06even though the basic methodology of PPP
  24. 1:10stays the same. and we're going to be
  25. 1:12talking about some aspects of Zoom that
  26. 1:14you all need to know and how to use
  27. 1:18effectively when you're teaching your
  28. 1:20classes. In fact, not just with us at TT
  29. 1:22Madrid, but in general, there's a very
  30. 1:24good chance that you will use Zoom for
  31. 1:27your own classes um going forward.
  32. 1:31But to kick off the session, um I'd like
  33. 1:34you to watch this short video. It's one
  34. 1:36that I've taken from YouTube. Uh you may
  35. 1:39have seen it before. Uh maybe not. Um
  36. 1:42let's see. But whilst you're watching
  37. 1:45it, I want you to think about your own
  38. 1:47experiences or stories of others
  39. 1:50people's experiences where things
  40. 1:52haven't gone quite to plan when working
  41. 1:55online.
  42. 1:57>> Scandals happen all the time. The
  43. 1:58question is how do democracies respond
  44. 2:00to those scandals?
  45. 2:01>> And what will it mean for uh for the
  46. 2:03wider region? I think one of your
  47. 2:04children's just walked in. I mean
  48. 2:06shifting shifting shifting sands in the
  49. 2:08region. Do you think relations with the
  50. 2:10North may change?
  51. 2:12>> Um, I would be surprised if they do.
  52. 2:15The Um, Pardon me.
  53. 2:21>> My apologies.
  54. 2:26>> What is this going to be for the region?
  55. 2:29>> My apologies. North uh,
  56. 2:32sorry. Um, North Korea, North South
  57. 2:36Korea's policy choices on North Korea
  58. 2:37have been severely limited in the last
  59. 2:39six months to a year.
  60. 2:41>> Wasn't that a fun video? Had you seen it
  61. 2:43before? Hm, I wonder. It certainly had a
  62. 2:46lot of views on YouTube when when it
  63. 2:49came out. And I think it's a great video
  64. 2:52that really just shows how things have
  65. 2:55so quickly developed um in terms of
  66. 2:57online teaching. So, you know, we know
  67. 3:00that a couple of years ago online
  68. 3:02teaching was wasn't really a thing
  69. 3:05globally, um, but has really progressed
  70. 3:09in the last couple of years. And that
  71. 3:11video happened right at the beginning of
  72. 3:14the pandemic when we we really knew
  73. 3:17nothing about online teaching or online
  74. 3:20working at that point. And we didn't
  75. 3:22really know what was acceptable and
  76. 3:23what's not acceptable uh when it came to
  77. 3:26working from home. And so the video
  78. 3:29really shows uh the the kind of the
  79. 3:32difficulty and awkwardness of thinking
  80. 3:34that that families and children etc were
  81. 3:37were at home when we were working. Um
  82. 3:40and it just shows that the end of the
  83. 3:42day life goes on when we're working from
  84. 3:45home. And now I think it's much more
  85. 3:48acceptable. People um are happy to show
  86. 3:51their animals while they're working. The
  87. 3:54children come in. uh the postman arrives
  88. 3:57and you know, nobody's really worried
  89. 3:58about that kind of um professionalism or
  90. 4:02or how things come across really when
  91. 4:04they're teaching online anymore. Um yes,
  92. 4:06we want to keep it to professional, but
  93. 4:08I think people are more relaxed about it
  94. 4:10these days. So, let's take a look again
  95. 4:13at some information about online
  96. 4:15teaching that's going to help you
  97. 4:16prepare for all sorts of eventualities,
  98. 4:19maybe even um kids and and animals in
  99. 4:22the background as you're teaching.
  100. 4:29So, how do you feel yourself about
  101. 4:32teaching online? I expect you might be
  102. 4:34nervous about it unless you've got an
  103. 4:36experience already. Uh, which is great.
  104. 4:39Perhaps you can think back to to when
  105. 4:40you started. Perhaps you were nervous
  106. 4:42about it at the [clears throat] very
  107. 4:44beginning. Well, it's normal to feel
  108. 4:46nervous. It's a very different skill um
  109. 4:49to use. Whilst fundamentally teaching is
  110. 4:52the same um you have to be much more
  111. 4:55competent in technology and you have to
  112. 4:58be much more familiar with applications
  113. 5:00and the internet and and how to share
  114. 5:03documents etc. So you know it's kind
  115. 5:05understandable if you feel nervous about
  116. 5:07it. Um, but this session is really to to
  117. 5:11sort of put your nerves at bay and give
  118. 5:14you some useful hints and tips about how
  119. 5:17to prepare for online classes just to
  120. 5:19make sure that everything goes as
  121. 5:21successfully as it can go. And also
  122. 5:24remembering that, you know, technology
  123. 5:26is technology and things will happen and
  124. 5:28kids are kids. So if they run in the in
  125. 5:30the background, they just will. And
  126. 5:32there's not a lot we can do to stop it.
  127. 5:34But preparing is the key to make it as
  128. 5:37successful as possible.
  129. 5:39How likely is it that you'll be teaching
  130. 5:41online? Well, I can assure you that it's
  131. 5:44very likely as we were just talking
  132. 5:47about the the fact that things have
  133. 5:49developed so much in the last couple of
  134. 5:51years with regards to online teaching.
  135. 5:54Um, and just working online, just
  136. 5:56generally, you know, having meetings
  137. 5:58online, etc. There's a very good chance
  138. 6:01now that you will teach online at some
  139. 6:03point. I know it's not everybody's
  140. 6:06preference. Um, we get a lot of teachers
  141. 6:08that don't want to do it. Um, mostly
  142. 6:10because of the fear factor and perhaps
  143. 6:14because of the age group, perhaps
  144. 6:16they're not having kind of grown up with
  145. 6:18with online technology. Perhaps it's a
  146. 6:21bit more uncomfortable for them. Um, but
  147. 6:23either way, um, there's a good chance
  148. 6:26that you are going to teach online at
  149. 6:28some point. And because of that we have
  150. 6:31made teaching online an absolute um
  151. 6:34important part of this TEFL program. So
  152. 6:38you will teach two classes online as
  153. 6:41part of your SIT teaching practices when
  154. 6:44you're here. But don't worry about that
  155. 6:46now. Remember that all happens when
  156. 6:47you're here. But what is important is
  157. 6:50that you watch this video. Uh make some
  158. 6:53notes if you want to. Um, you'll need to
  159. 6:55do the tasks at the end and get your
  160. 6:57head around what it's like to teach
  161. 6:59online. You're also going to need to use
  162. 7:03Zoom when you're here to teach the
  163. 7:05classes. So, it's going to be really
  164. 7:07highly recommendable that you get
  165. 7:10yourself um a free Zoom account and
  166. 7:12start practicing as soon as you can um
  167. 7:15as soon as possible. Get online um have
  168. 7:18a little play with Zoom and get ready
  169. 7:21for those teaching practices. uh you
  170. 7:24won't need to worry about the account
  171. 7:26when you're here. We will provide you
  172. 7:28with uh our business account to teach on
  173. 7:30Zoom which will be free to you and means
  174. 7:33that we can teach online for longer. So
  175. 7:36um your classes will be fully um
  176. 7:39available but do set yourself up with a
  177. 7:42free account or use a family members or
  178. 7:45friends and just have a little practice.
  179. 7:47Okay, but we're going to talk a little
  180. 7:49bit more about Zoom itself in a in a
  181. 7:52moment.
  182. 7:53So, what I'd like to do now is really
  183. 7:55just to touch base on kind of the pros
  184. 7:58and cons of teaching online. And we're
  185. 8:00going to start with looking at the
  186. 8:02students perspective. So, let's think
  187. 8:05about these advantages.
  188. 8:07And and by the way, some of these
  189. 8:08advantages and disadvantages will be the
  190. 8:10same for the teacher as well for you.
  191. 8:13Um, we'll take a look at those in a
  192. 8:14moment. But the advantages for a
  193. 8:17student, well, they can have classes at
  194. 8:20home or work. Um the ability to log on
  195. 8:23to a class from anywhere is fantastic.
  196. 8:27Um I actually know some students who you
  197. 8:30know go to a coffee shop um they go
  198. 8:32somewhere quiet um log onto their
  199. 8:35laptops and and have classes. So this
  200. 8:39kind of like balance for work and life
  201. 8:42and saving time um overall is a real
  202. 8:45advantage to students to do it online.
  203. 8:48Um, it cuts out that need to go to the
  204. 8:51academy, to take time traveling to a
  205. 8:55class. Um, you know, rushing from going
  206. 8:59from work to home, picking up the kids,
  207. 9:02trying to log on to, you know, log into
  208. 9:05the computer from from home, but they
  209. 9:08can do it at work. So, there's all sorts
  210. 9:10of advantages there in terms of time
  211. 9:12saving.
  212. 9:14Um for a student it can feel more
  213. 9:17personalized for them if it's a
  214. 9:19one-to-one class. So um being online it
  215. 9:23means that you can have that kind of you
  216. 9:26know set time and perhaps they are able
  217. 9:29to do it at work before they go home to
  218. 9:31their their crazy busy lives. So they
  219. 9:33can feel like it's more personalized for
  220. 9:35them uh which is a real bonus as well.
  221. 9:39Now one advantage of an online class to
  222. 9:42another to sorry in comparison to face
  223. 9:45toface is the opportunity to refer back
  224. 9:49to materials very easily through having
  225. 9:52shared documents or even recordings of
  226. 9:55the classes. Um we're recording this
  227. 9:58class right now of course. So this is
  228. 10:00also possible for you to do with your
  229. 10:02students um when you're using some sort
  230. 10:05of platform. So do make sure um that
  231. 10:09your students have access to their
  232. 10:11materials um through
  233. 10:14uh applications like Google documents,
  234. 10:17Google classroom etc. Um and if you've
  235. 10:20been watching the other videos, we'll
  236. 10:22have already talked about this uh the
  237. 10:24advantages of these kind of technical
  238. 10:26things in teaching um already.
  239. 10:30And for the students uh the information
  240. 10:33is instant. So as soon as you share a
  241. 10:36document with them, they've got access
  242. 10:37to it. Uh they don't need to print it.
  243. 10:39They don't need to go locate documents.
  244. 10:41They don't have all these papers in
  245. 10:43their hands that they're collecting
  246. 10:45after every class. So it's a nice
  247. 10:47paperless um kind of way to to progress
  248. 10:51with classes as well. Um which we're all
  249. 10:53in favor for uh in favor of these days
  250. 10:56in terms of saving trees and and saving
  251. 10:59money.
  252. 11:01What on the other hand are the
  253. 11:03disadvantages? Um I think that really
  254. 11:06any of these disadvantages are are
  255. 11:08typical of any class. Um but it online
  256. 11:11it can if it's not designed well it can
  257. 11:14come across as being quite boring for
  258. 11:17the student or students. Um there's a
  259. 11:20lot of pressure to perform especially if
  260. 11:22it's a onetoone class. Um this is the
  261. 11:25same actually if it's face to face but
  262. 11:28just having that constant interaction as
  263. 11:31the student um with the teacher is is
  264. 11:34quite challenging.
  265. 11:36Again online you can feel not quite so
  266. 11:39engaged um especially if it's a group
  267. 11:42class the individuals can disconnect
  268. 11:44more and that can be a disadvantage
  269. 11:47especially if the teacher isn't using
  270. 11:48any particularly strong techniques to
  271. 11:51engage the students online.
  272. 11:54And of course, if I'm a student, I can
  273. 11:57be easily distracted with other things,
  274. 11:59other things that are on my computer, uh
  275. 12:01my WhatsApp messages, um other emails
  276. 12:04that are coming through, things that pop
  277. 12:06up on the computer. And if I'm not
  278. 12:08really engaged in the class, it would be
  279. 12:09very easy for me to do that. Um which
  280. 12:12might sound kind of super useful if you
  281. 12:14want to um multitask, but isn't really
  282. 12:17very good um when you're trying to study
  283. 12:20and learn something.
  284. 12:23Let's take a look now from the the
  285. 12:25teacher's perspective.
  286. 12:28As you can see, some similar themes
  287. 12:30going on here. So, what are the
  288. 12:31advantages for you as a teacher? Well,
  289. 12:34timesaving 100%. Um, again, you know,
  290. 12:37being able to teach classes without
  291. 12:40having to travel um from one place to
  292. 12:43another, without having to leave home.
  293. 12:45All of these things are going to make
  294. 12:47time um more useful, more effective, and
  295. 12:50you can fit in more classes and
  296. 12:52therefore quite frankly more money. So
  297. 12:55if a class finishes at 3, then you can
  298. 12:58start another class at 3:35, for
  299. 13:02example. If you were in the academy or a
  300. 13:04school or business place, you would have
  301. 13:07at least 30 minutes, I'm sure, of time
  302. 13:10to have to get to another place. and
  303. 13:12that kind of time is is lost in terms of
  304. 13:16uh get in terms of earning money.
  305. 13:20So it can also save a lot of effort. No
  306. 13:23more carrying around your laptop and
  307. 13:25materials. No more carrying around uh
  308. 13:28speakers and all sorts of additional
  309. 13:30stuff that you might want to. You can
  310. 13:32just basically sit down on your laptop
  311. 13:34and access everything there. And that's
  312. 13:36definitely a valuable tool. I remember
  313. 13:39when I first started teaching um all
  314. 13:43those years ago, 10 plus years ago, that
  315. 13:45you know, I was literally carrying
  316. 13:47around a laptop that weighed a lot. Uh
  317. 13:50big chunky speakers, all my materials,
  318. 13:54um everything going on in in like a a
  319. 13:56backpack and used to break my back, I
  320. 13:59can assure you. And so everything being
  321. 14:02online, everything being on your
  322. 14:03computer and you sat at home now is such
  323. 14:06an advantage. um should make the most of
  324. 14:09it.
  325. 14:11You can of you of course use more
  326. 14:13interesting materials, more videos, more
  327. 14:15online games. So it can be interactive
  328. 14:17in a different way. And as we mentioned
  329. 14:20before, it's useful to share documents,
  330. 14:23reference back to class materials, uh
  331. 14:25class recordings, etc. So it's good for
  332. 14:28you to be able to do that and it makes
  333. 14:29you look pretty professional, I think,
  334. 14:31if you can, uh manage those um kind of
  335. 14:35ideas when you're using technology. So
  336. 14:37things like sharing Google documents and
  337. 14:40the Google classroom.
  338. 14:42But what are the disadvantages? Um I
  339. 14:45think as a teacher you need to be
  340. 14:47technically competent. There's going to
  341. 14:49be a basic level um that you're going to
  342. 14:52need to to kind of run online classes
  343. 14:55and that's to understand the
  344. 14:56applications at least that you are
  345. 14:58using. And as we talked about, Zoom is
  346. 15:01the main one that we use. And to be able
  347. 15:04to share documents, to be able to play
  348. 15:07videos, etc. online, I think you need to
  349. 15:09be at that level. And if you're not
  350. 15:12already, then yeah, that's going to be a
  351. 15:14little bit of a challenge for you. Not
  352. 15:16an impossible challenge, but a challenge
  353. 15:18nevertheless.
  354. 15:20You need to think a bit more
  355. 15:22dynamically, okay? because we haven't
  356. 15:24got this kind of oneto-one
  357. 15:27um vibe that we have in a in a class or
  358. 15:30even in a group class. We don't have the
  359. 15:32same ability to uh interact in a kind of
  360. 15:36a physical way. So, we need to think
  361. 15:39more dynamically about how we're going
  362. 15:40to come across on a video so that it's
  363. 15:42still engaging.
  364. 15:44Your lesson plans will need to be
  365. 15:46changed accordingly when um you're using
  366. 15:49them as a on as an online class. So you
  367. 15:52may have to rework some lesson plans and
  368. 15:55there is a danger of getting too
  369. 15:57involved in online classes especially
  370. 16:00when it's one to one and I think it's
  371. 16:04important to recognize that as the
  372. 16:06teacher it's still important for you to
  373. 16:08stay out of the class as much as
  374. 16:10possible in that your student is doing
  375. 16:12as much work as possible as much talking
  376. 16:14as possible and interacting so that you
  377. 16:17don't feel too involved because
  378. 16:18otherwise it can be quite exhausting you
  379. 16:20know um And especially if it's online,
  380. 16:23it feels like you have to make more
  381. 16:25effort, which you do. Um, but we don't
  382. 16:28want it to be exhausting for you,
  383. 16:29especially if you're doing lots of
  384. 16:31online classes back to back in a day.
  385. 16:36So, you can see there that there's
  386. 16:37absolutely some advantages to teaching
  387. 16:40online and the disadvantages are not
  388. 16:42necessarily things that will stop you
  389. 16:44doing it, but just will be things that
  390. 16:46will need more thinking about.
  391. 16:50So, let's take a look at some strategies
  392. 16:52for dealing with different scenarios,
  393. 16:54different things that are going to
  394. 16:55happen when [clears throat] you're
  395. 16:56teaching online and basically helping
  396. 16:58you to set yourself up for success by
  397. 17:01preparing yourself for your online
  398. 17:04classes. So, things you need to do, you
  399. 17:07need to consider how you're going to
  400. 17:09present your materials and adapt them
  401. 17:13online. Okay? So basically anything that
  402. 17:15you taught face to face, you need to
  403. 17:17think about how that's going to be
  404. 17:18presented
  405. 17:19um when you're doing it online.
  406. 17:21Physically, you can't give them uh a
  407. 17:24worksheet. So you'll need to think about
  408. 17:26how you're going to share that with
  409. 17:28them, how they're going to interact with
  410. 17:29them, etc. Very importantly, you're
  411. 17:32going to need to make sure your internet
  412. 17:33connection is the best it can be. Find
  413. 17:37yourself a place where internet
  414. 17:39connection is better if at home is not
  415. 17:41particularly good, for example.
  416. 17:43um buy yourself um one of these kind of
  417. 17:47adapted USBs where you can get extra um
  418. 17:50support for your internet connection.
  419. 17:53Think about the background. Obviously,
  420. 17:55you can see in all our videos here,
  421. 17:57we've got our TT Madrid background,
  422. 18:00which looks really professional, works
  423. 18:02pretty well. Um you know, is that
  424. 18:04something you need to consider when
  425. 18:06you're working at home and working
  426. 18:08online or other things that happening
  427. 18:10around you? You'll need to be aware of
  428. 18:13your room, your noise, everything. So,
  429. 18:16if you are planning on working from
  430. 18:18home, there's a good chance that you're
  431. 18:20going to have flatmates around you,
  432. 18:22family around you, people cooking,
  433. 18:25somebody else on the phone. So, you'll
  434. 18:27need to think about all of that uh and
  435. 18:29how best to um reduce that so that you
  436. 18:33can uh teach as effectively as possible.
  437. 18:36But again, knowing and recognizing that,
  438. 18:39you know, things aren't perfect
  439. 18:40sometimes when you work from home. Just
  440. 18:42do your best to set that up uh so that
  441. 18:44you can be successful.
  442. 18:46So, thinking about adapting your
  443. 18:48materials, thinking about the format,
  444. 18:51the visibility of them, um how you're
  445. 18:54going to show answers on activi on your
  446. 18:57activity sheets, um how you're going to
  447. 18:59let your students know whether they've
  448. 19:01answered things correctly or not. You'll
  449. 19:04also need to think about how are you
  450. 19:05going to monitor your students and and
  451. 19:06the work they're doing when they are
  452. 19:09when when they are working and you're
  453. 19:11here. In this case, it's a case of being
  454. 19:14sort of more verbal with your
  455. 19:16monitoring. So rather than just sitting
  456. 19:18and staring at the screen while they are
  457. 19:21working, um you can look away. Um do a
  458. 19:24little bit of work yourself every now
  459. 19:26and again. Check back. How you doing?
  460. 19:28Got any questions? And just want to
  461. 19:30remind you you've only got a few more
  462. 19:31minutes. Um, is there anything you want
  463. 19:33to check with me? Okay, great. And then
  464. 19:36you can carry on.
  465. 19:40When you're actually lesson planning it
  466. 19:43yourself, you'll need to prepare for
  467. 19:46these kind of issues. And so things that
  468. 19:48you should consider um on your front
  469. 19:50page of your lesson plan will be things
  470. 19:53like the anticipated difficulties. Um
  471. 19:56what do you expect will be difficult
  472. 19:57about the class and the content now that
  473. 20:00it's online? Um maybe there'll be things
  474. 20:03that won't work so well. Maybe um
  475. 20:05internet connection could be actually a
  476. 20:07problem. Um you know anticipated
  477. 20:10difficulties that the video doesn't play
  478. 20:12or they can't hear the audio um or that
  479. 20:15they have distractions themselves at
  480. 20:17home. And therefore what are those
  481. 20:19possible solutions? How are you going to
  482. 20:21manage that situation?
  483. 20:23You'll also need to think about your
  484. 20:25interaction patterns. Okay. Now by now
  485. 20:27you'll know what those are. Um, and this
  486. 20:29is where you think about in your class
  487. 20:31teacher student uh speaking time. Um,
  488. 20:35how they are interacting, how you're
  489. 20:37interacting with them, who's talking and
  490. 20:38when. And just recognize that lots of
  491. 20:41online classes um will be different when
  492. 20:45it comes to activities. And that's
  493. 20:47because a lot of online classes are
  494. 20:48oneto ones. So timing and activities
  495. 20:52might be different in your lesson plans
  496. 20:53if you've been teaching them in a group.
  497. 20:56And if it is a group online class, then
  498. 20:59it will require more classroom
  499. 21:01management. You'll need to use students
  500. 21:03names more to make sure that people are
  501. 21:05still listening and still watching you.
  502. 21:08You'll need to make sure that there is
  503. 21:10equal participation um across the group.
  504. 21:13These are still uh ideas as in uh face
  505. 21:17toface class as well, but when it's
  506. 21:19online, it's much easier for people to
  507. 21:22disengage and to kind of shy away from
  508. 21:25things. So you'll definitely need to
  509. 21:26make sure that you're using people's
  510. 21:29names and and making sure people are
  511. 21:31participating at all times. So making
  512. 21:34sure your interaction patterns are well
  513. 21:36placed in your lesson plan will help
  514. 21:38with that as well.
  515. 21:42As we've already talked about, it's hard
  516. 21:44to gauge a student's reaction when
  517. 21:46online. So little things that you can do
  518. 21:48is make sure that their camera is on so
  519. 21:50that you can see them and that they can
  520. 21:52see you. um it's a very unrewarding
  521. 21:55class if the camera is not on. I can
  522. 21:57assure you. So, where possible, make
  523. 22:00sure that that's the case. We've already
  524. 22:03mentioned this, but make sure that the
  525. 22:04materials you're planning on using um
  526. 22:07are adapted for online classes. So, you
  527. 22:10might need to make them more
  528. 22:11interactive. So, instead of a digital uh
  529. 22:15physical uh activity worksheet, perhaps
  530. 22:18you'll make it an interactive worksheet.
  531. 22:20There are plenty of online resources and
  532. 22:23games out there. We'll let you know some
  533. 22:25of those in a moment. You can definitely
  534. 22:28make it more interactive um by using
  535. 22:31some websites um rather than it just
  536. 22:33being a very static activity.
  537. 22:36Make sure for online classes there are
  538. 22:38lots of speaking opportunities. Um
  539. 22:41there's not much point spending a lot of
  540. 22:44time with your students writing um
  541. 22:46because you can't see what they're
  542. 22:47writing. you can do it, but just use the
  543. 22:50opportunity of an online class uh to do
  544. 22:52a lot of speaking and make sure there
  545. 22:55are games and just make sure that
  546. 22:56they're constantly engaged.
  547. 23:01Importantly here is to give your
  548. 23:03students independent work time so that
  549. 23:05they stay engaged in their learning
  550. 23:07throughout. What I see a lot of when it
  551. 23:10comes to online classes is teachers
  552. 23:12getting too involved in the activities.
  553. 23:16It is absolutely fine to give your
  554. 23:18students five minutes to prepare an
  555. 23:21activity. Five minutes to answer some
  556. 23:23questions, five minutes to think about
  557. 23:25what they want to say before they do it.
  558. 23:28Does not have to be kind of bam bam bam
  559. 23:30all the time. You talk, I talk, you
  560. 23:32talk, I talk. That's exhausting for you
  561. 23:35and it's exhausting for them. So, make
  562. 23:38sure that they stay engaged in in their
  563. 23:40own learning by taking some time out to
  564. 23:43work independently.
  565. 23:45And as I said, don't get too involved.
  566. 23:47Um, make sure that your students do the
  567. 23:50majority of the work and practices and
  568. 23:52that way they won't check out of what's
  569. 23:54happening in the class.
  570. 23:59Now, one of the the things that can
  571. 24:02happen in online classes is that
  572. 24:03students can arrive late. Well, managing
  573. 24:07this tardiness online is exactly the
  574. 24:10same as you would manage it in person as
  575. 24:12the teacher. Okay? So, always start your
  576. 24:15class on time and end on time, whatever
  577. 24:18that time is that's being agreed between
  578. 24:20you and the student or the students.
  579. 24:23If it's a group class, then you can
  580. 24:26start without the late comers and
  581. 24:28incorporate them later exactly the same
  582. 24:30as you would in a face-to-face class. If
  583. 24:33they've come late, don't expect to start
  584. 24:35the class again and involve them too
  585. 24:37much. Okay? Just let them join and um
  586. 24:41and listen in and catch up with the
  587. 24:43group. If you have the ability on the uh
  588. 24:47on the classroom on the on the Zoom
  589. 24:50call, etc. You can have um you can let
  590. 24:53them in when you when you want to let
  591. 24:56them in. So for example in Zoom there is
  592. 24:58a function that says uh that you will
  593. 25:01put people into a waiting room in order
  594. 25:04for them to not join at their own uh
  595. 25:07pace. So as soon as you want them to
  596. 25:09join you can uh let them in the waiting
  597. 25:12room if you want to or they can join as
  598. 25:14they as they come in at any time. Now
  599. 25:18warmers are a great way to help with
  600. 25:20this problem. This is why we have
  601. 25:22usually around five or six minutes at
  602. 25:24the start of a class to just have a bit
  603. 25:26of fun, get warmed up, um get people
  604. 25:29engaged in the class and and let those
  605. 25:32late comers come in without interrupting
  606. 25:34too much. So this is just as important
  607. 25:37in a face-toface class um and a and a
  608. 25:41online class.
  609. 25:43If it's a onetoone class, of course,
  610. 25:46that's very different because you can't
  611. 25:47just start the class without anybody
  612. 25:49there. So wait an appropriate amount of
  613. 25:52time and then start the class when the
  614. 25:55student arrives. Just make sure that
  615. 25:57they understand that you're still going
  616. 25:59to finish the class on time. Okay? So if
  617. 26:02they turn up 10 minutes late, then they
  618. 26:04lose 10 minutes of the class. It is not
  619. 26:08um appropriate to add on 10 minutes of
  620. 26:10the class at the end because that may
  621. 26:13impact your other teaching classes. It
  622. 26:15may impact their time, etc. So, just be
  623. 26:17sure to talk about cancellation uh
  624. 26:20policies with them and any lateness
  625. 26:23issues. Um, and try to adjust it if you
  626. 26:26can. So, if they're always 10 minutes
  627. 26:28late and you have the possibility, just
  628. 26:30say to them, why don't we just start the
  629. 26:32class 10 minutes later, okay? You know,
  630. 26:34you have the that option. If your
  631. 26:37students however come from an academy
  632. 26:40and the class time is set up for you,
  633. 26:42just let the academy know that there are
  634. 26:45students that are consistently late um
  635. 26:48and let them deal with that if
  636. 26:50necessary. The main thing is here is
  637. 26:53that it doesn't interrupt your class and
  638. 26:55it doesn't interrupt your next classes
  639. 26:58in terms of the time that you have to
  640. 27:00finish.
  641. 27:05Now technical issues are the biggest
  642. 27:08challenge uh when it comes to teaching
  643. 27:10online and and especially if you don't
  644. 27:12prepare yourself for them. I have seen a
  645. 27:15lot of online teaching practices and if
  646. 27:19things aren't going to go well, it's
  647. 27:21usually because nobody's prepared the
  648. 27:24their materials or they haven't prepared
  649. 27:26the technology for it. So we don't want
  650. 27:28that to happen. We want you to be set up
  651. 27:30so that you have a successful class. So,
  652. 27:33it's really important to take these
  653. 27:34things into account. The first thing is
  654. 27:37to do is to check your audio and your
  655. 27:40camera. Okay? Make sure everything is
  656. 27:43working. Test it before class. Log on
  657. 27:46online sometime before you are set to
  658. 27:49teach the class. Check your headsets.
  659. 27:52Check the volume. And if necessary,
  660. 27:54reconnect. And the important thing here
  661. 27:57is to stay patient. Now if when you are
  662. 28:00connected with your student you are
  663. 28:02having those issues then help your
  664. 28:05student uh through the issue in case
  665. 28:07it's their end as well as sometimes it
  666. 28:10can just be such a simple thing like
  667. 28:12you've got your earphones plugged in or
  668. 28:14you haven't got your earphones plugged
  669. 28:15in um or the volume's on mute and you
  670. 28:18don't recognize it. So just be patient,
  671. 28:22go through these details yourself and
  672. 28:24then check uh with your student that
  673. 28:26they're okay.
  674. 28:35Screen sharing. Now, this is a bit of a
  675. 28:37tricky technique if it's not practiced
  676. 28:40properly. So, you uh must practice
  677. 28:43screen sharing. If you find that on the
  678. 28:46day the screen sharing doesn't work,
  679. 28:48just tend to stop it, start again. Uh
  680. 28:52usually does the trick. But make sure
  681. 28:54you test everything beforehand. Um but
  682. 28:56accept that sometimes glitches just
  683. 28:58happen.
  684. 29:00You can send materials to your student
  685. 29:01via the chat system once they are in uh
  686. 29:04the class with you online. So they can
  687. 29:08also open materials there and if you're
  688. 29:10having problems sharing it and it's
  689. 29:12always good to have a verbal check-in.
  690. 29:14So ask your students, can you see my
  691. 29:17screen? Uh it's a document headed summer
  692. 29:20holidays. Now this second question or
  693. 29:23this second part is really important.
  694. 29:25Don't just say, "Can you see my screen?"
  695. 29:26because obviously they're just going to
  696. 29:28say yes. What you want to check is what
  697. 29:30they can see. And that's really
  698. 29:32important because sometimes they might
  699. 29:34be seeing an old document or just you,
  700. 29:37etc. So, it's really good idea to to
  701. 29:39give them an idea of what they should be
  702. 29:41looking at.
  703. 29:44And then finally, if there are any other
  704. 29:47technical issues, just pay attention to
  705. 29:50see if your student can hear or see you.
  706. 29:53Be patient. wait till problems are
  707. 29:55resolved. You may have to reconnect or
  708. 29:58connect again um to your class, but just
  709. 30:01be patient. I see a lot of teachers get
  710. 30:05very flustered um by the technical
  711. 30:09issues. It's really not a problem. Okay,
  712. 30:11we are we know that there are technical
  713. 30:13issues. We know that things happen. That
  714. 30:16doesn't mean the class is going to be a
  715. 30:18disaster. Um there is a big difference
  716. 30:21between being prepared and then things
  717. 30:23not going quite right um and just not
  718. 30:26preparing and it's really clear which
  719. 30:29ones you know which is which when it
  720. 30:31happens. So if you've prepared and
  721. 30:34you've done everything that you can and
  722. 30:36a little problem occurs just be patient
  723. 30:39uh and wait till it gets resolved. There
  724. 30:41is a good chance that internet access
  725. 30:44will be um challenging on the day of
  726. 30:47teaching. You might have a bit of a
  727. 30:48delay, for example. Uh you might have
  728. 30:51somebody kind of, you know, uh just stop
  729. 30:54in a particular uh movement on the
  730. 30:58screen. So, it happens. Um that doesn't
  731. 31:01mean that the class overall is going to
  732. 31:03be a disaster. It just means that you
  733. 31:05have to maybe wait a little bit, um slow
  734. 31:08down a little bit, repeat something,
  735. 31:11adjust your lesson plan at the time.
  736. 31:14That's fine. That's all part of managing
  737. 31:16your classes online.
  738. 31:19And overall, what can I say? Prepare,
  739. 31:22practice, stay patient, and breathe. And
  740. 31:26if you do those things, uh your class
  741. 31:28will be successful and whatever happens.
  742. 31:33So for this next section, we're going to
  743. 31:35have a look at the uh the application
  744. 31:39Zoom and I'm going to demonstrate to you
  745. 31:42some of the basic functions of how to
  746. 31:44use Zoom. So the minimum that you'll be
  747. 31:47using um when you're teaching with us
  748. 31:50will be the chat box, the share screen,
  749. 31:52uh your camera and how to you know share
  750. 31:56videos etc. and we'll talk a little bit
  751. 31:59about you know the importance of your
  752. 32:01facial expressions, eye contact, the
  753. 32:04lighting, the background etc.
  754. 32:07Let's take a look then at the use of
  755. 32:09Zoom in terms of the functions that are
  756. 32:12available to you when you're teaching.
  757. 32:15Now this is our normal account that uh
  758. 32:18you will be using but I'm sure that you
  759. 32:20will be setting up your own account at
  760. 32:22some point going forward. So the
  761. 32:25important things to look at are the
  762. 32:28functions at the bottom of the screen.
  763. 32:29Now you can see here that sometimes
  764. 32:31these functions um disappear. Um
  765. 32:34sometimes they stay on the screen. So if
  766. 32:36you are looking for them, just w your
  767. 32:39mouse over them and they usually come
  768. 32:40up. So we've got the um microphone
  769. 32:43option here, which is the mute. Uh you
  770. 32:46can see here a little microphone icon.
  771. 32:49And if you have any trouble at all
  772. 32:51setting up your uh microphone, you just
  773. 32:54need to go to the arrow and you can
  774. 32:57press something like the audio settings
  775. 32:59and you should get a view here of um
  776. 33:04testing your speaker and your microphone
  777. 33:06etc. So you can close that down when
  778. 33:09once that's tested. Now, um, as soon as
  779. 33:13you plug in your earphones, for example,
  780. 33:15that should convert straight away to
  781. 33:16your earphones, but usually it converts
  782. 33:19straight onto your, uh, laptop audio.
  783. 33:23Okay. It's the same with the camera. You
  784. 33:26should be able to automatically um, just
  785. 33:29link to the camera in your laptop. When
  786. 33:31you set up Zoom, it might ask you to
  787. 33:33just confirm that the the internal video
  788. 33:36uh camera is the one that you want to
  789. 33:37use, which is normally fine. If you have
  790. 33:40an additional camera, then you'll need
  791. 33:42to plug that in and select that as well.
  792. 33:45Again, if you're not sure if you've got
  793. 33:47some things that are working, like your
  794. 33:48camera's not showing for some reason,
  795. 33:50which can often happen at the very
  796. 33:52beginning of setting up Zoom, then just
  797. 33:55click on the arrow. Uh you usually have
  798. 33:58a selection of different cameras
  799. 33:59available here, um your background, etc.
  800. 34:02Or just go straight to video settings.
  801. 34:04And here you will see that you get more
  802. 34:06options around your videos. uh to just
  803. 34:09double check that it's working.
  804. 34:13Then the next important uh thing that
  805. 34:16you can use to check that everyone's
  806. 34:18online is to click on the participants
  807. 34:21um icon here and it will show you a list
  808. 34:24of who is actually online. Obviously,
  809. 34:27it's just me at the moment. Um but there
  810. 34:29would be a list of your students online
  811. 34:32at that point. If you have set up um in
  812. 34:35the future the waiting room where your
  813. 34:37students can literally um be waiting
  814. 34:39until you let them in, it will also show
  815. 34:41you here who's in the waiting room and
  816. 34:43it will give you an option to um let
  817. 34:45them in or not.
  818. 34:48Another couple of things on the on the
  819. 34:50list here, it shows you if the
  820. 34:52microphone is on or off and if the
  821. 34:54camera is on or off. If they're not on,
  822. 34:56they usually have a like a a red line
  823. 34:59through them. Okay. Um you can ask your
  824. 35:02students to put their uh microphones on
  825. 35:05silence to mute them or to put their
  826. 35:08videos on or off and you can do that by
  827. 35:11clicking here with different options as
  828. 35:13well. Okay. So that's all possible
  829. 35:16through the participants uh list.
  830. 35:20Now [snorts] importantly you importantly
  831. 35:22you will use the chat system um to
  832. 35:26interact with your students. It's a
  833. 35:28great little feature just to get your
  834. 35:30students kind of used to the technology.
  835. 35:32You don't have to use it all the class,
  836. 35:34but it could just be simple things like
  837. 35:36popping in your name um here, especially
  838. 35:39if you've got a big group. You might
  839. 35:42like people to say hello and perhaps
  840. 35:43you'll say, "Hey, everybody say hello in
  841. 35:46your own language." Um for example, and
  842. 35:50everybody pops in their their own um
  843. 35:52versions. Now, if you want to send
  844. 35:55messages yourself, the default normally
  845. 35:58is to send a message to everybody. Um,
  846. 36:00but you can also select uh individual
  847. 36:04names. Obviously, it's not showing right
  848. 36:06now because it's just me, but if you
  849. 36:08were joined or your friends were joined,
  850. 36:09it would show a list of those and you
  851. 36:11can send messages directly to
  852. 36:13individuals as well. You can keep that
  853. 36:16chat open or you can close it and it
  854. 36:18will pop up when you use it.
  855. 36:21Now, here is the share screen function,
  856. 36:23which is an important one for you to to
  857. 36:26practice with. Okay, it's a big green uh
  858. 36:29bold icon here because it's so
  859. 36:31important. Now, before you start, make
  860. 36:34sure that you have open so before your
  861. 36:38class, every document that you want to
  862. 36:40share and close down any documents that
  863. 36:42you don't want your students to see,
  864. 36:44right? Really, really important. We just
  865. 36:46want open uh anything that's important
  866. 36:48for the class and close everything else
  867. 36:49down. Now, when you share screen, you
  868. 36:53will get a whole load of options here of
  869. 36:55different things that you can share
  870. 36:56depending on what you've got open on
  871. 36:58your computer. So, you can see that I've
  872. 37:00got like Google Chrome open in terms of
  873. 37:04different tabs that I've got open. I've
  874. 37:06got um my folders open on my computer. I
  875. 37:10could even share my screen. You can see
  876. 37:12yet another one of me here.
  877. 37:15If you have opened PDFs um particularly
  878. 37:19word documents they'll show individually
  879. 37:21here. If you have open different tabs in
  880. 37:25Google documents, Google slides etc.
  881. 37:28they will show here as a Google Chrome
  882. 37:30icon and then you select the tabs at the
  883. 37:33top of the screen. You can move between
  884. 37:34those tabs quite fluently.
  885. 37:38If you want to share a video, it will
  886. 37:39show here. Okay, as long as you've got
  887. 37:41it open and downloaded and ready to go.
  888. 37:44What's very important is that you click
  889. 37:46this button, share sound. Can you see
  890. 37:49that? I'm ticking it, unticking it,
  891. 37:51ticking it, etc. Here. If you want
  892. 37:54others to be able to hear anything that
  893. 37:56you share from your computer, you will
  894. 37:57need to tick this button 100%. It will
  895. 38:00not work otherwise. So, if you forget to
  896. 38:04click this button and share a video,
  897. 38:06they will not be able to hear it. Okay?
  898. 38:09which is really important why we do a
  899. 38:11check of asking our students if they can
  900. 38:14hear it. So maybe play it for 10 seconds
  901. 38:16and say stop it and say can you hear the
  902. 38:18video? Find out yes or no. If you can't
  903. 38:22or if they can't sorry then stop
  904. 38:24sharing. You go back to the share screen
  905. 38:27and click the box this time and then
  906. 38:29select the video. Once you've done that
  907. 38:33uh all will be fine. So in its most
  908. 38:35basic form, the thing that you need to
  909. 38:38do is have open on your computer
  910. 38:40everything that you need to share and
  911. 38:42close down anything that you don't need
  912. 38:44to share. When you click the share
  913. 38:46screen button, you can select the
  914. 38:48individual documents or the Google
  915. 38:50Chrome documents that you wish to share
  916. 38:52or the video or the audio etc. You will
  917. 38:56just need to make sure that you share
  918. 38:57the sound. Uh tick the share sound
  919. 39:00button here if you want to share sound.
  920. 39:04Then the other options here um won't
  921. 39:07actually be um appropriate for your
  922. 39:09personal teaching practices with us. Um
  923. 39:11you will be teaching onetoone classes
  924. 39:14online with us. So things like the
  925. 39:17breakout rooms won't be necessary. Um
  926. 39:19you won't need to worry about managing
  927. 39:21uh people going off into virtual rooms.
  928. 39:24It will just be you and the students in
  929. 39:26your classes.
  930. 39:28And the last thing that I want to share
  931. 39:30with you is a look at the whiteboards
  932. 39:33that is available as a digital board.
  933. 39:35Here you can see it on the end. You can
  934. 39:37select a new whiteboard. And if we open
  935. 39:40that, it will give us a chance to have a
  936. 39:42little play. And here you can see you
  937. 39:44can draw some things. Okay, you see on
  938. 39:47the left here we've got some options. We
  939. 39:48got some nice shapes. Let's just pop
  940. 39:51that there. Let's do some hearts. Okay.
  941. 39:54Uh draw some lines. So, there's a nice
  942. 39:57little selection of things to do, and we
  943. 39:59just got one big eraser here. If we want
  944. 40:02to get rid of it all, we're not too
  945. 40:03happy with what we've done. We can
  946. 40:06change colors, uh, and we can change
  947. 40:08text as well.
  948. 40:12Okay, we can pop that in bold, etc. All
  949. 40:17right, and we can just erase it all if
  950. 40:19we want to.
  951. 40:21Now this is a great option if you are
  952. 40:24happy to kind of see how things go,
  953. 40:26interact in the moment with the class
  954. 40:29and don't not to have anything prepared.
  955. 40:32However, if you do wish to prepare um
  956. 40:36some kind of activity, some images, your
  957. 40:39target language up front for example,
  958. 40:42then uh you can also do that by
  959. 40:44preparing a PowerPoint slide, Google
  960. 40:46Slides, uh Google document, PDFs, etc.
  961. 40:50You can have everything prepared for
  962. 40:52you. It just won't be as interactive at
  963. 40:54the time as a whiteboard is. Um there is
  964. 40:57no right or wrong answer here. It just
  965. 40:59depends on the interaction that you
  966. 41:01want. Now, it's important that you have
  967. 41:03a little play as I've already mentioned.
  968. 41:06Um, make sure that you're ready to have
  969. 41:09a go uh at using Zoom in your classes.
  970. 41:12Okay. And let's now return uh back to
  971. 41:15the other slides where we're talking
  972. 41:17about managing online classes in
  973. 41:19general.
  974. 41:21And so, uh finally, just to wrap up,
  975. 41:23we'd like to share some free resources
  976. 41:26with you. And these are for teaching
  977. 41:30adults online. So you'll find a copy of
  978. 41:32these materials in the section um along
  979. 41:35with the video. So you can check out
  980. 41:38these online uh resources at any time.
  981. 41:46Now I'm just going to go through the
  982. 41:49part that's important for you for when
  983. 41:51you come to do your online classes with
  984. 41:53us. Uh we will expect you to have
  985. 41:57already practiced Zoom, be familiar with
  986. 42:00it. We will expect you to have all the
  987. 42:03equipment um that you need to be able to
  988. 42:06teach your class successfully online. So
  989. 42:08things that you can do to get ready for
  990. 42:10your online classes. Obviously you'll
  991. 42:12need your laptop available and you'll
  992. 42:14need chargers available for you as well.
  993. 42:17So make sure you bring your chargers.
  994. 42:18Make sure you bring any adapters with
  995. 42:20you that you need. Um, a laptop is going
  996. 42:24to be crucial here, not perhaps um a
  997. 42:26tablet. Tablets do not have the same um
  998. 42:31kind of applications uh as a laptop. You
  999. 42:34may not be able to share things as well.
1000. 42:36You may not be able to use the chat
1001. 42:38system uh as well. So, it's highly
  1002. 42:40recommended that you have a laptop.
  1003. 42:43Once you're here, obviously, we can
1004. 42:44check the connection to the internet and
1005. 42:46make sure that you're set up and ready
1006. 42:48to do that. You'll need to bring an
1007. 42:52adapter for your PC or your Mac for any
1008. 42:56internet cables. So, here at the school,
1009. 42:58we use a lot of cables as well as the
1010. 43:01Wi-Fi. That just ensures us that we are
1011. 43:04getting the best um coverage that we
1012. 43:06can. And for those um who tend to buy
1013. 43:10these kind of smaller laptops now, the
  1014. 43:13the MacBooks etc., they're quite often
1015. 43:15don't have the cables or the internet
1016. 43:18connections that we need. So, you need
1017. 43:20to make sure that you buy a cable that
1018. 43:22will allow you to um attach uh an
  1019. 43:25internet cable, for example, or a
1020. 43:27projector or any additional points that
1021. 43:30you that you think you'll need for your
1022. 43:32class. You will absolutely need to use
  1023. 43:35earphones with a microphone. We don't
1024. 43:39expect you to um have the best
1025. 43:42technology necessarily in all accounts,
1026. 43:44but we do expect you to have at least
  1027. 43:46the earphones um with a microphone
1028. 43:49available. I promise you that if you
1029. 43:51don't have those things, your class may
1030. 43:53not be as successful. Um there are often
1031. 43:57uh issues with people hearing you and
1032. 43:59understanding you. Um and it comes often
1033. 44:02from not having a decent microphone or
  1034. 44:05decent earphones.
1035. 44:07You'll need to make sure that when you
1036. 44:09go to teach that all documents will be
1037. 44:11closed down. Um, don't have all your
1038. 44:13tabs open at the top. Just have open
1039. 44:16only the things that you need for that
1040. 44:18class. Make sure that you don't have any
1041. 44:21photos on your laptop that you don't
1042. 44:22want people to see, any documents on
1043. 44:24there. It's very easy to share uh your
1044. 44:28screen and share things that are
1045. 44:30happening on your desktop um without you
1046. 44:32realizing. So just make sure that
1047. 44:34everything is closed down except for the
1048. 44:36documents for the class. Where possible
1049. 44:39download any videos that you wish to
1050. 44:41use. Um it's not always a good idea to
1051. 44:44play a video directly from the internet
1052. 44:46because connections can be slow. So do
1053. 44:49have that in mind if you're planning on
  1054. 44:50sharing a video. You'll need to check
1055. 44:53that your audio works, that your video
1056. 44:56uh or your camera works on your
1057. 44:58computer. Um make sure your computer has
1058. 45:00a camera. Not all of them do. and you
1059. 45:03can install Zoom um to your computer if
1060. 45:06you want to. Now, the Zoom app and the
1061. 45:09Zoom website that comes from Internet
1062. 45:11Explorer uh can look and feel very
1063. 45:14different. So, just make sure that you
  1064. 45:17know which one you're using. Download
1065. 45:18the app if you want to do that and
1066. 45:20practice with that one. And finally,
  1067. 45:23always be prepared with a plan B in
1068. 45:25mind. Now, a plan B clearly is that uh
1069. 45:29you need to be able to send documents if
1070. 45:31you can't share your screen. You need to
  1071. 45:33have a a link to [clears throat] your
1072. 45:35video if you can't share the video. Um
1073. 45:38you'll need to think about how an
1074. 45:40activity is going to uh run if you have
1075. 45:43an internet connection problem. Okay?
1076. 45:46That doesn't mean we want you to create
1077. 45:47an entire second plan to go alongside
1078. 45:49it. Just means you have to have these
1079. 45:51things in mind if things don't go to
  1080. 45:54plan on the day.
1081. 45:59And I know that was an awful lot of
1082. 46:01information to take in in this
1083. 46:03particular session, but as you can see,
1084. 46:06it's uh it's such an important um topic
1085. 46:10and it's such an important part of your
1086. 46:12teaching and learning to teach uh as a
1087. 46:16TEFL teacher because we guarantee that
1088. 46:18at some point you will be teaching
1089. 46:20online and we want it to be a success
1090. 46:22for you. So do take all of these things
1091. 46:24into account um and get yourself ready
1092. 46:26to teach online when you are here. So
1093. 46:30now I'd like you to go and do your task
1094. 46:32uh which you can find in this section
