  1. 0:05you took off you landed on the moon you
  2. 0:07stepped on the moon what was going
  3. 0:08through your
  4. 0:10mind what a great privilege it was to be
  5. 0:14selected to represent the nation and
  6. 0:16really represent the world in such
  7. 0:22a uh a history making
  8. 0:26event uh and I use the words magnificent
  9. 0:30desolation to describe how magnificent
  10. 0:34it really was that we were able to carry
  11. 0:37out that uh that sort of sense of wonder
  12. 0:42would it be like to uh have people walk
  13. 0:45on the moon up there so we've been able
  14. 0:47to do that six out of seven attempts to
  15. 0:51land uh but it was sure a desolate
  16. 0:55location just lifeless as could be just
  17. 0:58Shades of Gray going out in all
  18. 1:01directions very bright sun and we knew
  19. 1:04that this
  20. 1:06location had looked almost the same for
  21. 1:10100,000 years so we were just dropping
  22. 1:13by to to see one of the days that last
  23. 1:1813 Earth days with a lot of hot sun
  24. 1:22coming down and then it's 13 14 days of
  25. 1:27darkness where it's very very cold
  26. 1:30what's your thoughts on the future for
  27. 1:31the space
  28. 1:33program I think we're at a transition
  29. 1:36period right now uh we were flying the
  30. 1:40shuttle to the station and building up
  31. 1:44experiments then we had uh another
  32. 1:48failure uh in the shuttle return the
  33. 1:51Columbia accident so the accident board
  34. 1:54and uh a study group from NASA decided
  35. 1:59that it was time to uh specify a date to
  36. 2:04uh terminate the use of the shuttle M
  37. 2:07and to embark on a new program that
  38. 2:10President Bush announced to
  39. 2:15eventually finish the space station and
  40. 2:19retire the space shuttle Orbiter build
  41. 2:21new spacecraft and uh get to the Moon by
  42. 2:242020 one more question would you do it
  43. 2:27all over
  44. 2:28again uh considering that it put me in a
  45. 2:32place of uh being able to do a variety
  46. 2:35of things that can
  47. 2:38further introduce me to the public in in
  48. 2:41different areas and then they're going
  49. 2:44to understand what I've done in the past
  50. 2:47and wonder whether I have ideas about
  51. 2:50the future and then I can come up with
  52. 2:53books like uh I'm issuing here and be
  53. 2:57signing Mission to Mars my version of
  54. 3:01space exploration you would do it all
  55. 3:03over again then yeah it gives me that
  56. 3:05opportunity to best serve my country in
  57. 3:09things that I know how to do thank you
  58. 3:11very very much
