1. 0:03Writing code that calls the Claude API
2. 0:04by hand is fine, but there's an even
3. 0:06faster path. Have Claude write it for
4. 0:09you.
5. 0:12In my simple project, I have this
6. 0:13TypeScript file that gets weather for
7. 0:15me. There are two stubs.
8. 0:17First, we have get weather, which will
9. 0:18accept a city and return the temperature
10. 0:20and conditions.
11. 0:21And the run function, which I want to
12. 0:23use the tool runner in the Claude
13. 0:24TypeScript SDK.
14. 0:26The tool runner handles the tool calling
15. 0:28and agent loop for me.
16. 0:31Claude code comes with a built-in skill
17. 0:32called Claude API. You can invoke it
18. 0:34directly by using the /claude API, or it
19. 0:37will automatically invoke it when it
20. 0:39detects that you're using the TypeScript
21. 0:40SDK. If you don't see it though, you can
22. 0:42run /plugin marketplace
23. 0:45anthropic/skills,
24. 0:47taking into consideration the S at the
25. 0:49end of anthropic.
26. 0:52Now, I open the project folder in my
27. 0:53terminal and launch Claude code. Then,
28. 0:56I'm going to give it this one prompt.
29. 0:57The prompt names the file, names the
30. 0:59pattern, and it names the end state.
31. 1:01Claude code will then fill in the get
32. 1:03weather and run against the types. It
33. 1:05will append a call at the bottom,
34. 1:07execute the script, and report the
35. 1:08output. And if something errors out, it
36. 1:11reads the error message and patches it
37. 1:12in place.
38. 1:13Claude code created a Zod tool that
39. 1:15parsed the input and returned the output
40. 1:17based on the city type.
41. 1:20It also created a tool runner in the run
42. 1:22function like we asked for, and output
43. 1:24the final results of the agent loop.
44. 1:28Most of what you write against the
45. 1:29Claude API has a familiar shape. Define
46. 1:31a tool, hand it to a runner, return the
47. 1:34result. You don't need to type that from
48. 1:36memory every single time. You stub the
49. 1:37file and then hand it to Claude code,
50. 1:39and then just review the diff.
51. 1:44Claude code is an agent that edits files
52. 1:45and runs commands inside your terminal.
53. 1:48Run Claude in your project and give it a
54. 1:50prompt that names the file and the
55. 1:51pattern that you want.
