  3. 0:13Basham with the two o'clock report 30
  4. 0:16years have gone by since the serial
  5. 0:17killer calling himself BTK took the life
  6. 0:20of his first victim now Wichita Police
  7. 0:22say they solved the case with the arrest
  8. 0:24of a 59 year old Park City man
  9. 0:27today is a very historic day
  10. 0:30the bottom line
  11. 0:33BTK is arrested
  12. 0:36[Applause]
  13. 0:43people in Wichita had been terrorized by
  14. 0:47the concept of this buying torture kill
  15. 0:49an individual for 30 years from 74 to
  16. 0:532005. is without doubt the most unusual
  17. 0:56case we've ever had here in Wichita
  18. 0:59I thought this is a this is a master
  19. 1:01criminal I mean he's eluded hundreds of
  20. 1:03investigators over the years the man
  21. 1:06accused of being the BTK serial killer
  22. 1:08returns to a Kansas courtroom this
  23. 1:10morning
  24. 1:11everybody wanted to know what this guy
  25. 1:14was about who this guy was and more
  26. 1:16important how he could kill 10 people
  27. 1:19including two children
  28. 1:23the questions people here were asking
  29. 1:25maybe answered soon by Raider himself
  30. 1:30I need to find out more information
  31. 1:34well I mean I I strangled Mrs on Terrell
  32. 1:38and she went out
  33. 1:40or passed out I thought she was dead she
  34. 1:42passed out and I strangled
  35. 1:44Josephine it was so quiet in that
  36. 1:47courtroom you could hear a fly landing
  37. 1:50on a piece of paper a mile away in there
  38. 1:52Dennis Raider was in the center ring of
  39. 1:56a three-ring circus and the spotlight
  40. 1:58was on hand
  41. 2:00because of his ego he loved that
  42. 2:02absolutely loved that at that point in
  43. 2:05time strangled her for the death
  44. 2:08strangle at that time with your hand
  45. 2:09there was no regret there was no you
  46. 2:13know I feel bad for doing this what
  47. 2:16happened then oh
  48. 2:18um trying to find a place to hide her
  49. 2:19hide the body
  50. 2:20did you find a place yes yes it did you
  51. 2:24got to be kidding me I looked at this
  52. 2:26and I thought
  53. 2:28that is what killed all these women far
  54. 2:31better than the trunk of the car
  55. 2:37when people watch the televised
  56. 2:39courtroom confession of Dennis Raider
  57. 2:41they basically thought they knew the
  58. 2:43whole story
  59. 2:45but for me that was just a start
  60. 2:49hello you have a prepaid call from
  61. 2:52Dennis L reader an inmate at Kansas
  62. 2:55Department of Corrections to accept this
  63. 2:58call press or save
  64. 3:00when you went before judge Waller and he
  65. 3:04asked you to talk about the details of
  66. 3:06all the crimes what was what were you
  67. 3:08thinking what was that like for you
  68. 3:19were you feeling anything when that was
  69. 3:21happening was I just unloaded uh maybe
  70. 3:24the wave a pressure valve I guess okay
  71. 3:29I'm Dr Catherine ramsland professor of
  72. 3:33forensic psychology
  73. 3:34I've been corresponding with Dennis
  74. 3:36Rader for over 10 years to try to
  75. 3:39understand what led him to become one of
  76. 3:42the most notorious serial killers in
  77. 3:44America he really controlled Wichita
  78. 3:47during that time period Raider wanted
  79. 3:49you to know he was watching you he was
  80. 3:52aware of you he wants you to feel his
  81. 3:55eyes on you that's so frightening
  82. 3:58I think it's very important to
  83. 4:00understand how any given individual
  84. 4:03could become an extreme offender
  85. 4:07why do they make these Life Choices
  86. 4:09what kinds of mental states do we see in
  87. 4:12these people
  88. 4:14the story isn't over because at this
  89. 4:17point we still don't know or at least I
  90. 4:20don't know what caused Dennis Rader to
  91. 4:22become the monster that he did I don't
  92. 4:25know I'm not sure do you know I think I
  93. 4:27know
  94. 4:29what made you so sick you son of a [ __ ]
  95. 4:34Dennis Raider is a monster Dennis Raider
  96. 4:37is the worst of humanity
  97. 4:40I don't want the story to go away until
  98. 4:42we find out why
  99. 4:44why did he decide that his life was
  100. 4:46going to be that of a killer
  101. 4:49this is the first time that Raider has
  102. 4:51explored these topics in depth with
  103. 4:54anyone why did you want to put your
  104. 4:56story out there
  105. 4:59the main thing is to help people like
  106. 5:01yourself understand a dark mind you know
  107. 5:04I lived a normal life you gotta have a
  108. 5:06real dark mind
  109. 5:07and that's the 64 000 question
  110. 5:12why did I do that
  111. 5:14each serial killer has a unique set of
  112. 5:17factors that turns him or her into
  113. 5:20monsters
  114. 5:21the more information we have the more we
  115. 5:24understand what makes them tick the
  116. 5:26easier it will be to prevent them
  117. 5:29foreign
  118. 5:32[Music]
  119. 5:46Killers have interested me for about 30
  120. 5:49years and in part because when I was a
  121. 5:53kid there was a serial killer operating
  122. 5:54in my neighborhood before anyone even
  123. 5:57used the phrase serial killer
  124. 6:01and my brother's friends found the first
  125. 6:05body on their Farm an Eastern Michigan
  126. 6:08University student was charged today
  127. 6:09with one of the seven co-ed murders in
  128. 6:12the Ann Arbor Michigan area John Collins
  129. 6:1422 year old student at the University
  130. 6:16School of Education John Norman Collins
  131. 6:18is also known as The Co-Ed Killer
  132. 6:21because co-eds from two different
  133. 6:23University campuses in the area were
  134. 6:26being picked up and murdered
  135. 6:29what fascinated me to watch the
  136. 6:32development of this case in the
  137. 6:34newspapers and I wanted to find out more
  138. 6:38about serial killers
  139. 6:40later in life as I became a professor of
  140. 6:44forensic psychology
  141. 6:46extreme offenders were something we knew
  142. 6:48very little about
  143. 6:50and I wanted to contribute to that
  144. 6:54I've published 68 books and have four
  145. 6:57more in the works
  146. 7:00not only do I write about serial killers
  147. 7:02I'm constantly teaching I do police
  148. 7:05trainings I do a broad variety of
  149. 7:09activities all surrounding my knowledge
  150. 7:12of extreme offenders
  151. 7:15a lot of myths have cropped up about
  152. 7:18serial killers so I especially want to
  153. 7:21study cases that show that these myths
  154. 7:25just don't work
  155. 7:27and law enforcement needs to understand
  156. 7:29this so that they don't dismiss a
  157. 7:32potential suspect too soon
  158. 7:36Dr Catherine ramsland is one of the
  159. 7:39leading serial killer experts
  160. 7:42understand how we might notice certain
  161. 7:47behaviors at an early age pick up on
  162. 7:49those behaviors and get help for those
  163. 7:52behaviors before it's too late
  164. 7:58when Dennis Raider was finally caught
  165. 8:02and revealed to be this older guy panchy
  166. 8:07balding guy
  167. 8:09I was interested in the media response
  168. 8:12to him this is a man a family man who
  169. 8:15went home to his wife and two children
  170. 8:17every night Dr why were there no red
  171. 8:19flags why did nobody see this he was a
  172. 8:21church leader a family man right there
  173. 8:22in the middle of the community you know
  174. 8:23I'm Amazed by that as well that nobody
  175. 8:25was able to figure out that this guy had
  176. 8:27this this secret life that he was hiding
  177. 8:30the media wanted a specific type of
  178. 8:33person to fit the mold of serial killer
  179. 8:38but he'd been a family man a churchgoer
  180. 8:41he had a job you know he he basically
  181. 8:43blasted all the FBI stereotypes out of
  182. 8:47the water
  183. 8:47[Music]
  184. 8:51one of the reasons I wanted to work with
  185. 8:54him was to look at someone who appears
  186. 8:57to be an outlier
  187. 8:59and see what he teaches us
  188. 9:04because he's not unique
  189. 9:08there are others who have been family
  190. 9:11men churchgoers
  191. 9:13seemingly normal people who have these
  192. 9:17thoughts and sometimes act on these
  193. 9:20thoughts
  194. 9:21and so I think it's important for us to
  195. 9:23not just understand them but also treat
  196. 9:27them before they become serial killers
  197. 9:34my initial Communications with Dennis
  198. 9:36Rader were were kind of interesting he
  199. 9:39liked the fact that I came in with
  200. 9:41credentials because it meant he was
  201. 9:44being taken seriously
  202. 9:46but at the same time he wanted to test
  203. 9:49me
  204. 9:50he said he wanted me to solve some codes
  205. 9:54and he liked working with codes
  206. 9:58he began to send me cut out pages from
  207. 10:02magazines and newspapers where he'd
  208. 10:04Circle things and he'd make odd comments
  209. 10:07at like at one point he said I
  210. 10:11understand you're interested in recipes
  211. 10:13of the three layer kind
  212. 10:16I thought that was strange because I
  213. 10:19actually don't cook and especially three
  214. 10:23layer recipes so I didn't really quite
  215. 10:25get what he meant
  216. 10:27I put the whole alphabet down a b c d e
  217. 10:30and then I looked at each of the pieces
  218. 10:34of paper that had things Circle or items
  219. 10:37in his letter that corresponded to the
  220. 10:40ABCD letters
  221. 10:42and wrote everything I could down
  222. 10:45but then I began to see the things that
  223. 10:47he had circled
  224. 10:49like beef
  225. 10:51Tangy
  226. 10:53King so there's k
  227. 10:56and then it dawned on me what the three
  228. 11:00layer recipes were BTK
  229. 11:03for bind them torture them kill them
  230. 11:07and so once I returned the code to him
  231. 11:11and said okay what's next he recognized
  232. 11:15not that I had solved the code but that
  233. 11:17I would play the game
  234. 11:20so so your fantasy Lake was more
  235. 11:23important to you than your real life it
  236. 11:25sounds like
  237. 11:31you know not very far away I could
  238. 11:33switch gears and move into one and move
  239. 11:36out to the other very quickly
  240. 11:39there's a great value in understanding
  241. 11:42Dennis Raider and his motivations the
  242. 11:45things that made him do what he did
  243. 11:48if we have more people who are skilled
  244. 11:51at recognizing those aspects of a person
  245. 11:54that might lead them in a path of some
  246. 11:57criminal Behavior whether it be a serial
  247. 11:59killer or or whatever if they can
  248. 12:02intervene I mean think of the lives that
  249. 12:05they'll save I would love it that you
  250. 12:07could just get some of this stuff off
  251. 12:09your chest your health is declining and
  252. 12:12I think it'd be really great for you to
  253. 12:14be able to just say what you need to say
  254. 12:17is that okay with you
  255. 12:19yeah I think so
  256. 12:21[Music]
  257. 12:28people refer to Wichita as a big little
  258. 12:31small town and a lot of people don't
  259. 12:33realize how big wichita's is the biggest
  260. 12:35city you know in Kansas
  261. 12:38and wichita's just this very livable
  262. 12:41place with very friendly people
  263. 12:46it's a small town with small town values
  264. 12:49neighborly people
  265. 12:51right in the middle of the country
  266. 12:57[Music]
  267. 12:59Dennis Rader was raised primarily in
  268. 13:01Wichita
  269. 13:02and moved to the suburb of Park City
  270. 13:05when he got married
  271. 13:09when I'm writing about any person I want
  272. 13:13to see what they saw smell what they
  273. 13:16smelled feel the air
  274. 13:19where did he work kinds of travel routes
  275. 13:23did he use
  276. 13:24it's almost as if I'm putting myself in
  277. 13:27their headspace
  278. 13:30there's a psychology in it
  279. 13:33good morning hello Dennis
  280. 13:36I'm in Wichita haven't been here since
  281. 13:382016. oh
  282. 13:41are you ready to go
  283. 13:43okay
  284. 13:46Dennis Rader is in El Dorado
  285. 13:48Correctional Facility in Kansas
  286. 13:51he's in a Cell by himself apart from the
  287. 13:55general population in the prison but he
  288. 13:57does have a phone that he can use
  289. 14:02okay
  290. 14:06nervous okay
  291. 14:09in order to produce the kind of book I
  292. 14:12wanted I needed to get permission from
  293. 14:15family members of the victims who had
  294. 14:17formed a trust
  295. 14:20Dennis Rader had signed over his life
  296. 14:23rights to the victim's Family Trust as
  297. 14:27part of a settlement
  298. 14:29so Dennis Rader gets absolutely no
  299. 14:32profit from any of the work I do with
  300. 14:34him
  301. 14:35so what's your cell like
  302. 14:42the way to approach really any offender
  303. 14:46is to be non-judgmental that's the first
  304. 14:49rule you have to be able to listen to
  305. 14:53what they have to say no matter what
  306. 14:54they have to say the country has
  307. 14:58and
  308. 15:00address I mean they look for Eyes First
  309. 15:03and that's what I usually spot the ice
  310. 15:04and then I
  311. 15:06probably call hundreds and hundreds of
  312. 15:08those things off the floor
  313. 15:13I call them Escape monsters
  314. 15:16but at the same time you also must keep
  315. 15:19your goals in mind you must set
  316. 15:22parameters and keep some respect in the
  317. 15:24process is that why you call yourself a
  318. 15:27cave monster
  319. 15:29yeah
  320. 15:30call me a monster
  321. 15:31I am sort of a monster collector
  322. 15:33basically a doctor or Dr Jekyll and Dr
  323. 15:36Hyde Raider loves to manipulate people
  324. 15:39and I know despite a long involvement
  325. 15:43with Dennis Raider
  326. 15:45I could easily be used and exploited in
  327. 15:48some way so yeah I have to keep my guard
  328. 15:50up really all the time
  329. 15:57Dennis Raider was 28 years old when he
  330. 16:00murdered four members of the Otero
  331. 16:03family
  332. 16:04by all appearances Dennis Rader was an
  333. 16:07average Joe and he lived in Wichita his
  334. 16:10whole life except for the years from
  335. 16:131966 to 1970 when he served in the Air
  336. 16:16Force
  337. 16:20I'm at the Raider family before Dennis
  338. 16:23we went to church together at Christ
  339. 16:26Lutheran
  340. 16:28I remember Dennis coming back in 70 from
  341. 16:31the service it was a big deal all the
  342. 16:34the people of the church who had been
  343. 16:36there for years knew him so they were
  344. 16:39welcoming home and you know how you
  345. 16:42doing and were you going to work
  346. 16:44we had an old basketball goal up
  347. 16:48Dennis and his brothers would play
  348. 16:51you just didn't like to lose
  349. 16:53he was a little bit of a bully arrogant
  350. 16:56older better whatever you know those
  351. 17:00kind of things
  352. 17:03in 1970 Dennis Rader returned from the
  353. 17:07Air Force and he's 25 years old
  354. 17:10the world that Dennis Raiders coming
  355. 17:12back to
  356. 17:14the Midwest puts a big emphasis on
  357. 17:16Family Values
  358. 17:18where what matters is going to church
  359. 17:22getting a job
  360. 17:24getting married and raising a family
  361. 17:28his parents wanted to introduce him to a
  362. 17:31girl at their Church
  363. 17:33he met her
  364. 17:35and got married pretty quickly
  365. 17:38what were you anticipating when you
  366. 17:41thought about getting married what were
  367. 17:43you anticipating being as a husband well
  368. 17:47I think the main thing I'm in love I was
  369. 17:49really in love with my wife and I still
  370. 17:51am I I still have one memories
  371. 17:55all in love we don't really have any
  372. 17:57other thoughts except we want to
  373. 17:59eventually you know Mary that that
  374. 18:01marriage or person that you've met
  375. 18:03falling in love with
  376. 18:05the question is commonly raised can
  377. 18:09serial killers can they ever really love
  378. 18:12someone
  379. 18:13if a serial killer has what we call the
  380. 18:18brain of a psychopath their emotions
  381. 18:21tend to be shallow and their ability to
  382. 18:24process moral information is distorted
  383. 18:28if Dennis Raider talks about loving
  384. 18:32someone it could be that he really
  385. 18:35doesn't experience that very deeply
  386. 18:38Raider got his dream job as he would
  387. 18:41call it at Cessna building aircraft
  388. 18:44but then a short time later he lost the
  389. 18:46job
  390. 18:48and this was a big failure for him
  391. 18:51he couldn't figure out why he'd been
  392. 18:53laid off and he also had the pressure of
  393. 18:55how he'd support his wife
  394. 18:58you got a job at Cessna which you loved
  395. 19:02right and then and then you were laid
  396. 19:04off how did what was that like for you
  397. 19:08oh that was a tremendous blow to me
  398. 19:11that was really set me off on going to
  399. 19:14my first break-in
  400. 19:16the day I got laid off but but why would
  401. 19:19that why would getting laid off get you
  402. 19:21to the point where you want to break in
  403. 19:23someone's house
  404. 19:34and vote in my first home
  405. 19:38when you talk about your organized
  406. 19:40offender which if you look from Dennis
  407. 19:42Rader's perspective most of what he did
  408. 19:44was would fall into what we call an
  409. 19:46organized offender Style
  410. 19:49they plan and he actually would execute
  411. 19:53practice sessions to see what it was
  412. 19:55like to break glass go through a house
  413. 19:58he wasn't familiar with until he thought
  414. 20:00he was ready he would try to get the
  415. 20:01timing down of his potential Suspects
  416. 20:04then use that to have a successful event
  417. 20:09involved in your layoff why would you
  418. 20:12pick someone like that to take out your
  419. 20:15frustration on
  420. 20:16basically I wanted to do something
  421. 20:21you know that was the way to relieve my
  422. 20:22frustration did it work
  423. 20:25Oh no I got worse
  424. 20:27when he got fired he was so angry that
  425. 20:32he wanted to do something destructive
  426. 20:35to act out against Society
  427. 20:38and that meant breaking laws
  428. 20:40and that made him feel better
  429. 20:43it just gave him a sense of being
  430. 20:44powerful again
  431. 20:46and he was ready to move forward with
  432. 20:49something far more serious and lethal
  433. 20:52I started on this dark side a long time
  434. 20:56before that and the volcano was finally
  435. 20:58starting to erupt
  436. 21:09in 1974 Wichita was just a large
  437. 21:13Midwestern City about 250 000 people
  438. 21:17lived here
  439. 21:18the main jobs here were Agriculture and
  440. 21:21Aviation
  441. 21:24what we didn't have here is crime
  442. 21:28we had the occasional burglaries and
  443. 21:30robberies
  444. 21:31but the bad stuff happened on the east
  445. 21:34or west coast it didn't happen in
  446. 21:36Wichita Kansas
  447. 21:40we ended up in Wichita after my father
  448. 21:42we'd gotten out of the Air Force he
  449. 21:44found a job here in Wichita at Cook
  450. 21:46Airfield
  451. 21:47there was five of us kids in the family
  452. 21:51I was the oldest
  453. 21:53Josie was very artistic creative she
  454. 21:57wrote poetry drew a lot of pictures
  455. 22:00Joey was just like a little man I mean
  456. 22:03he was already a lady killer good
  457. 22:05looking totally athletic
  458. 22:08my mom and dad had this relationship of
  459. 22:11unbelievable love
  460. 22:14you know
  461. 22:16he adored her
  462. 22:18it's kind of love you wish you could
  463. 22:21find they lived together and they died
  464. 22:23together he basically died licking each
  465. 22:26other's eyes
  466. 22:29in January of 1974 I was 15 years old
  467. 22:34it had been snowing
  468. 22:36it was a day of testing for school
  469. 22:39I asked my dad to take me to school
  470. 22:40early that day so that I could get to
  471. 22:43that early study hall and Danny and
  472. 22:45Carmen had to go with me because they
  473. 22:48were riding with him also
  474. 22:50took my test
  475. 22:52everything
  476. 22:54I was walking home
  477. 22:56walked over to the back gate opened it
  478. 23:00up and my dog lucky was outside
  479. 23:04and that was totally not normal so I
  480. 23:08said hey lucky what are you doing out
  481. 23:09here buddy
  482. 23:11I went to back door opened it up
  483. 23:16and I noticed that my mom's purse was on
  484. 23:18the stove flipped up
  485. 23:22so I yelled out is anybody home
  486. 23:25one of my siblings bailed out Charlie
  487. 23:27come back here Mom and Dad are playing a
  488. 23:29bad trick on us
  489. 23:31so I ran back down the hall
  490. 23:34I looked and saw my mom laying on the
  491. 23:36bed
  492. 23:37she was beat up
  493. 23:40my dad had a belter on his neck
  494. 23:43you could smell the death you smell the
  495. 23:46fear you could smell all I could to this
  496. 23:48day I can smell fear
  497. 23:51my heart just broke it felt like
  498. 23:54somebody had ripped my chest wide open
  499. 23:56and taken and pulled my heart out
  500. 24:00I told Danny to get on the phone and
  501. 24:02call the police
  502. 24:05healed that the phone was dead
  503. 24:08so I told Danny to go next door and call
  504. 24:10the police
  505. 24:11[Music]
  506. 24:13crime scene investigators and detectives
  507. 24:15from Wichita Police showed up and the
  508. 24:19three older Otero children didn't know
  509. 24:22where their 11 year old sister was and
  510. 24:24nine-year-old brother
  511. 24:27when police went through the house
  512. 24:30they also found Joey Jr dead in his
  513. 24:34bedroom
  514. 24:36and Josephine hanged from a pipe in the
  515. 24:39basement
  516. 24:43they took us
  517. 24:45apartment
  518. 24:46I asked for Joey and Josie
  519. 24:49and finally a police captain and a
  520. 24:51chaplain came up to me and said Charlie
  521. 24:53we got to tell you
  522. 24:55that joy and Josie
  523. 24:58we're in the house
  524. 24:59and once again it felt like they ripped
  525. 25:02my heart out it's all over again
  526. 25:07foreign
  527. 25:16the crime scene investigators noted that
  528. 25:20the thermostat had been turned extremely
  529. 25:22high
  530. 25:29I did things like that
  531. 25:32radar would often take his ideas from
  532. 25:35True Detective magazines or fiction
  533. 25:38about crimes and so he had read if you
  534. 25:42turn up the thermostat it makes bodies
  535. 25:46decompose faster and foils the ability
  536. 25:50to determine the time of depth
  537. 25:54the lack of items stolen would give you
  538. 25:57the indication that the motive Behind
  539. 26:00These killings was not a home invasion
  540. 26:02it was more for the sexual gratification
  541. 26:05[Music]
  542. 26:07the police when they'd found 11 year old
  543. 26:10Josephine partially clothed there were
  544. 26:13semen on her and around her body
  545. 26:18DNA was not even on the law enforcement
  546. 26:21radar in the 70s and that's one of the
  547. 26:24remarkable things about this case is the
  548. 26:26way the Wichita Police Department
  549. 26:27original crime scene folks collected
  550. 26:30that evidence and maintained it so that
  551. 26:32it was not contaminated so that it was
  552. 26:35available for DNA when DNA came along
  553. 26:37years later
  554. 26:39the Otero murders were the first taste
  555. 26:43of a Maniac that we knew was loose
  556. 26:46somewhere in Wichita somewhere in Kansas
  557. 26:49we thought it was a one-off a one-time
  558. 26:52deal
  559. 26:53we were wrong
  560. 27:01we're on our way
  561. 27:02to
  562. 27:04what was once the Otero house
  563. 27:07where Dennis Rader committed his first
  564. 27:11murders four people in a single family
  565. 27:16hi doctor hello pleasure to meet you too
  566. 27:21can you tell me something about when you
  567. 27:23were here that day what it was like we
  568. 27:26had no idea what was going on here at
  569. 27:29all
  570. 27:30detectives were running in and out and
  571. 27:33no one would talk to me but you knew
  572. 27:35them and they knew you I knew them and
  573. 27:37I'd go up to them and they'd say can't
  574. 27:40talk now
  575. 27:41busy
  576. 27:42in 1974 I was the chief photographer for
  577. 27:46cake tv
  578. 27:48all the reporters there were trying to
  579. 27:50get to the police department to say
  580. 27:52something finally they said that four
  581. 27:55people had died in the house
  582. 27:59well that was huge
  583. 28:02four people dying in a house in Wichita
  584. 28:04Kansas that just didn't happen
  585. 28:06the bodies of Joseph Otero his wife
  586. 28:09Julie their daughter Josephine and their
  587. 28:11son Joseph II were discovered in their
  588. 28:13East Wichita home the victims had been
  589. 28:15bound gagged and strangled with a cord
  590. 28:19the investigators look shaken and it was
  591. 28:22basically from the children what they
  592. 28:24saw and what had been done to the
  593. 28:27children
  594. 28:27that would Shake anybody
  595. 28:31do you remember where you spotted her
  596. 28:43well I thought she didn't like to drive
  597. 28:44on that
  598. 28:46wasn't at work that time I was probably
  599. 28:48in that area where the hotel and then
  600. 28:51saw her and the kids go to school one
  601. 28:53day so I thought well this might be it
  602. 28:55well for a fantasy victim would become
  603. 28:58real
  604. 29:00foreign
  605. 29:02ER he had targeted the wife not the
  606. 29:06children the children were just
  607. 29:08collateral damage
  608. 29:10and he said it in such a matter-of-fact
  609. 29:12way
  610. 29:13that was Haunting
  611. 29:16when I just focused on
  612. 29:24what was your plan what did you think
  613. 29:26you're going to do that day
  614. 29:27[Music]
  615. 29:31Northwest of Wichita
  616. 29:34and I was going to pick her and kidnap
  617. 29:36her
  618. 29:37probably anger
  619. 29:41materials are going to mess up the whole
  620. 29:43formula he wasn't supposed to be there
  621. 29:45he was they had a fence all the way
  622. 29:49around
  623. 29:49I hadn't looked over the side of the
  624. 29:52fence
  625. 29:53all of a sudden their dog prints all
  626. 29:55over the place
  627. 29:56didn't think about that
  628. 29:58but Earl had to do something
  629. 30:01that was teed up too much
  630. 30:04but about that time I reached down
  631. 30:07fire d
  632. 30:10got the phone line
  633. 30:14he didn't know that Joseph
  634. 30:16otero's senior was not going to work he
  635. 30:19also did not know they had a dog
  636. 30:23all he's thinking about is he's picked
  637. 30:25them he has a limited time frame in
  638. 30:28which to act and now he must complete
  639. 30:31the plan
  640. 30:33what we do know about
  641. 30:35Psychopathic Killers is that they tend
  642. 30:38to over Focus
  643. 30:40so it's as if they're a train and a
  644. 30:43track that is not going to stop until it
  645. 30:45gets to its goal no matter what
  646. 30:48as you talk to Dennis Rader did you feel
  647. 30:50at any point that he was trying to
  648. 30:52manipulate you always yeah but I always
  649. 30:55knew that's how he operates you've
  650. 30:59researched all these serial killers do
  651. 31:01you have dreams I do not in part I think
  652. 31:05because I do it clinically do you
  653. 31:08compartmentalize I probably do that's
  654. 31:10just what Raider said he did he actually
  655. 31:12has a better word for it cubing Raider's
  656. 31:15idea of cubing is that he's the cube
  657. 31:18with multiple size if he can switch in
  658. 31:20and out at any given time for whatever
  659. 31:22is necessary but he's still all these
  660. 31:25other things
  661. 31:27remember the cube you know big guy bad
  662. 31:30guy
  663. 31:30that's so curly father and husband to my
  664. 31:34family
  665. 31:36I worked at church I worked at Scouts
  666. 31:39there's the Dark Side of Me
  667. 31:44and that's a very strong
  668. 31:49after Raider had killed four people he
  669. 31:52went home
  670. 31:53they knew that he had to present himself
  671. 31:55to his wife as if everything was normal
  672. 31:58so he pulled it together very quickly
  673. 32:00and managed to act as if it was just a
  674. 32:05regular day and nothing had happened and
  675. 32:08in retrospect
  676. 32:10she didn't see anything different about
  677. 32:12him
  678. 32:13so he was able to cube
  679. 32:15very quickly
  680. 32:19Dennis Rader and other serial killers
  681. 32:22like him can present themselves in
  682. 32:25multiple ways whenever works for their
  683. 32:29purposes
  684. 32:30and have no real concern about any
  685. 32:34inconsistencies or contradictions
  686. 32:36including moral judgments
  687. 32:39and so yes he can say he feels shame or
  688. 32:44remorse
  689. 32:45but that can all be erased immediately
  690. 32:48if he's trying to present the face of
  691. 32:50BTK the infamous serial killer
  692. 32:55did you think you would do it again did
  693. 32:57you think it would that's it I'm done
  694. 32:59it's out of my system or did you think I
  695. 33:01that wasn't that wasn't there for a
  696. 33:03while I guess you called up okay
  697. 33:12and then they're ready to go at it again
  698. 33:18foreign
  699. 33:21it was horrible for people here in
  700. 33:24Wichita which was pretty much a sleepy
  701. 33:26little town
  702. 33:28to all of a sudden find that this major
  703. 33:30Massacre of a family had happened right
  704. 33:34here in our in our community
  705. 33:37it was a huge story
  706. 33:39most people at that time thought it was
  707. 33:42a drug deal
  708. 33:43because no person in their right mind
  709. 33:45would kill a family
  710. 33:47that didn't happen at all
  711. 33:51quadruple homicides today are still rare
  712. 33:54thankfully
  713. 33:56but you can imagine how rare they were
  714. 33:58then and then the kind of attention that
  715. 34:01that kind of a homicide garnered and the
  716. 34:04public outrage and the public fear and
  717. 34:06the demands that those investigators
  718. 34:08felt when lead after lead after lead LED
  719. 34:11them nowhere
  720. 34:14in 1974 no one in law enforcement was
  721. 34:18using the phrase serial killer it would
  722. 34:21really end up being used later that
  723. 34:24decade and into the 1980s
  724. 34:26but nobody really understood what serial
  725. 34:29murder was about in particular stranger
  726. 34:31murder
  727. 34:32fear spread quickly in the community
  728. 34:34people began looking over their
  729. 34:37shoulders doors and windows were locked
  730. 34:39tight gun sales skyrocketed
  731. 34:42and the prevailing paranoia was not
  732. 34:44without good reason
  733. 34:46the Altera murders changed the life I
  734. 34:50would think of everybody in the city at
  735. 34:53that time
  736. 34:54it did in our own household we did not
  737. 34:57lock a door in our house until January
  738. 35:00of 74.
  739. 35:04when we were talking to police detectors
  740. 35:05over a series of days we were starting
  741. 35:07to find out what's happened it reminded
  742. 35:09me very much of the In Cold Blood
  743. 35:11murders in Holcomb Kansas in the 50s
  744. 35:15reminded me of that because I had been
  745. 35:17at the hanging of Richard Hickok and
  746. 35:19Smith
  747. 35:22the Clutter family was killed by a
  748. 35:26couple of recently released prison
  749. 35:28inmates that had been falsely told that
  750. 35:31they had a safe full of money at this
  751. 35:34Farm
  752. 35:35the prison inmates decided to to pull
  753. 35:38this home invasion
  754. 35:40showed up killed the family the four
  755. 35:43that were present in Cold Blood for just
  756. 35:46a small amount of money and a radio
  757. 35:47transistor radio
  758. 35:50when news of the Clutter murders rocked
  759. 35:53Kansas made a deep impression on Raider
  760. 35:56[Music]
  761. 35:59who did hear that on the radio when it
  762. 36:02happened
  763. 36:06now it's 14 sophomore
  764. 36:08I wrote Peach School in one of my
  765. 36:11employer's daughters they had a station
  766. 36:13wagon
  767. 36:14I always had a crush on her
  768. 36:17and I loved sitting the front seat and
  769. 36:19she always wore a skirt
  770. 36:22and if it's on the radio and I heard
  771. 36:25that
  772. 36:26Dennis Rader was especially interested
  773. 36:29in the fact that they had been bound
  774. 36:30with rope before being killed because he
  775. 36:34himself loved the feel of ropes around
  776. 36:38his waist and also in his fantasies he
  777. 36:43would be using rope to bind his victims
  778. 36:45so the fact that the Clutter family had
  779. 36:49been bound with rope
  780. 36:51appeal to him
  781. 36:53the one that found out
  782. 36:56that's
  783. 37:02after Raider murdered the oteros he took
  784. 37:06a radio
  785. 37:07as if to establish some link of
  786. 37:10solidarity to the Clutter Killers who
  787. 37:13also had taken a radio
  788. 37:16Raider aspired to become a serial killer
  789. 37:20so that meant he needed to study them in
  790. 37:24order to figure it out
  791. 37:26I think most serial killers are not very
  792. 37:29creative
  793. 37:31or bright about what they're doing and
  794. 37:33they do tend to read what other Killers
  795. 37:36like themselves have done and yet Raider
  796. 37:40I think
  797. 37:41took that to an extreme whereas most of
  798. 37:43what he did or thought about had been
  799. 37:46done before by someone else he really
  800. 37:49was not that creative
  801. 37:52and in order to become the serial killer
  802. 37:55he aspired to be
  803. 37:57after the oteros
  804. 37:59he had to kill again
  805. 38:02[Music]
  806. 38:08to the oteros the Catherine bright
  807. 38:11murdered wasn't very long afterward
  808. 38:13didn't you think that was risky
  809. 38:15[Music]
  810. 38:21and everything else seem to not mean
  811. 38:24that much
  812. 38:26but he played into the some of the
  813. 38:29magazines
  814. 38:34I saw her one day in her house people I
  815. 38:37thought well this might be all right I
  816. 38:39mean he's coming from somewhere at that
  817. 38:41time of the day and I'm in between
  818. 38:43classes so that's a possibility
  819. 38:47at this point he was going about his
  820. 38:50life as a student at Wichita State
  821. 38:53University and a husband and hoping to
  822. 38:56start a family
  823. 38:58it takes a different type of mentality
  824. 39:00to commit a crime during daylight hours
  825. 39:03more confidence and the ability to blend
  826. 39:07in than it would to work under the cover
  827. 39:09of Darkness so that tells you a little
  828. 39:11bit about the mentality and the planning
  829. 39:13that was going into these crimes when
  830. 39:16you had picked out Catherine bright
  831. 39:19how long did how long did you watch her
  832. 39:22before you decided to act
  833. 39:31so I thought well all I have to do is
  834. 39:34break in and be waiting for it when she
  835. 39:36comes in so I took the picture probably
  836. 39:38another month
  837. 39:42Catherine bright was a 21 year old girl
  838. 39:45who lived alone
  839. 39:47she had a brother who was 19 who lived
  840. 39:49in Valley Center
  841. 39:51one night he spent the night with his
  842. 39:54sister and so they could go shopping the
  843. 39:55next morning and they got up and they
  844. 39:57went shopping
  845. 39:58a normal day at that point
  846. 40:02BTK prided himself on meticulous
  847. 40:05planning or at least he thought he did
  848. 40:08he knew who Catherine bright was he had
  849. 40:11monitored her for a while
  850. 40:13but he was not expecting a brother
  851. 40:16well the brother came in and BTK had to
  852. 40:21do something with the brother because
  853. 40:23her brother was immediate threat he had
  854. 40:26tied me up and had me tie my sister up
  855. 40:28and he separated us in separate bedrooms
  856. 40:31and he came back in and
  857. 40:34was going to strangle me to death and I
  858. 40:37broke loose the bonds he had me tied up
  859. 40:39with and jumped up and fought him for
  860. 40:41the gun he he jerked it away from me and
  861. 40:45then he shot me the first time in the
  862. 40:46head and I went down and
  863. 40:49then he thought I was dead
  864. 40:51this was not in btk's plan at all he was
  865. 40:55there to kill Catherine bright and to do
  866. 40:58all of the torturous things that he did
  867. 41:00to Catherine bright a brother that
  868. 41:03wasn't in the plant
  869. 41:05so a second fight entails he once again
  870. 41:08shoots him thinks he's killed him and
  871. 41:11goes back to attack Catherine once more
  872. 41:13time and he next thing he heard was the
  873. 41:14front door open and Kevin's running away
  874. 41:16so he knew his time was limited so he
  875. 41:19didn't get to do everything he wanted to
  876. 41:20do he said he knew he had to kill her
  877. 41:22and just move on so he stabbed her
  878. 41:27he panicked and I just out of here
  879. 41:31stupidness I stabbed her
  880. 41:34and I didn't I didn't like to use a
  881. 41:37knife I really did
  882. 41:39but as soon as he had stabbed Catherine
  883. 41:42bright he realized this was not what he
  884. 41:44wanted to do what he liked was to
  885. 41:46strangle people to bind them and
  886. 41:49strangle them stabbing was not in the
  887. 41:51picture and never again did he use it
  888. 41:54[Music]
  889. 41:55the second
  890. 42:00second the doors wide open
  891. 42:02but I saw him running down the porch and
  892. 42:05heading out on the road
  893. 42:07so those are just total mass
  894. 42:11[Music]
  895. 42:13when did you first feel like you were a
  896. 42:16serial killer
  897. 42:18um uh probably after
  898. 42:21um
  899. 42:26when Dennis Rader the serial killer
  900. 42:29known as BTK started corresponding with
  901. 42:32me
  902. 42:33one of the first things he said was that
  903. 42:35I should take a drive into the
  904. 42:37countryside around Wichita
  905. 42:41they grew up on farms and he wanted me
  906. 42:44to look at the Barns and silos
  907. 42:47they might look ordinary but those were
  908. 42:50the places he had his first torture
  909. 42:53fantasies
  910. 42:57he had the fantasy of he was going to
  911. 43:00build this Silo of Terror
  912. 43:03and so he drew it and inside were things
  913. 43:06like the wheel of death where he would
  914. 43:09chain a victim to it
  915. 43:11and there was a train along with a
  916. 43:14railroad track because his fantasy was
  917. 43:17to tie girls to the track and have the
  918. 43:19train run over them
  919. 43:21when did you think of a barn for the
  920. 43:24elaborate torture devices
  921. 43:43or even better when somebody else was
  922. 43:46telling them
  923. 43:47later on I came up with my sexual
  924. 43:50fantasy about the silos
  925. 43:53one of the things that we know about
  926. 43:55sexually compelled serial killers like
  927. 43:59Dennis Rader is that they often have
  928. 44:01generated a fantasy life that's very
  929. 44:03Vivid to them usually starts quite Young
  930. 44:07studying that would show me what
  931. 44:10motivates them to want to kill someone
  932. 44:13but also to actually cross the line and
  933. 44:17do it good morning hello Dennis I'm Dr
  934. 44:21Catherine ramsland professor of forensic
  935. 44:24psychology and the author of multiple
  936. 44:26books about extreme offenders like
  937. 44:28serial killers
  938. 44:29I've been corresponding with Dennis
  939. 44:31Rader to try to understand what led him
  940. 44:34to become one of the most notorious
  941. 44:36serial killers in America
  942. 44:39this is the first time that Raider has
  943. 44:41explored these topics in depth with
  944. 44:44anyone people call me a monster I guess
  945. 44:47I am sort of a monster
  946. 44:48the more information we have about
  947. 44:51serial killers the more we understand
  948. 44:53what makes them tick the easier it will
  949. 44:55be to prevent them
  950. 45:02[Music]
  951. 45:11my goal with Dennis Rader is to use his
  952. 45:15story to dissolve some of the
  953. 45:18stereotypes about serial killers so that
  954. 45:21we can better identify children who
  955. 45:25might be at risk for becoming adult
  956. 45:27offenders
  957. 45:29to do that we need to understand what
  958. 45:32motivates someone like Dennis Rader
  959. 45:35so we need to look at their development
  960. 45:38their Fantasy Life and their crimes to
  961. 45:43understand it
  962. 45:47by the fall of 1974 Raider had killed
  963. 45:51the otero's murder Catherine bright
  964. 45:53attempted to kill her brother
  965. 45:57and Raider has been going about business
  966. 46:00as usual as a young husband and a
  967. 46:03student taking classes at Wichita State
  968. 46:06initially the bright murder was not
  969. 46:09associated with the Otero killings
  970. 46:12there were not a lot of similarities in
  971. 46:14the method of killing the strangulation
  972. 46:16that was used at the Otero house was
  973. 46:19different than what you found where
  974. 46:21Kathy was stabbed and that's what
  975. 46:22resulted in her death
  976. 46:24at the crime scene at the oteros the
  977. 46:26telephone line was cut and there had not
  978. 46:29been a sign of a struggle
  979. 46:31and at the bright scene of course there
  980. 46:34was a struggle as Kevin fought back and
  981. 46:36they turned Furniture over and the phone
  982. 46:39in the bedroom had been unplugged but
  983. 46:42Catherine bright was found clutching a
  984. 46:44telephone receiver in her hand she just
  985. 46:46wasn't able to make the call
  986. 46:49because Catherine Bright's brother
  987. 46:50didn't die he was able to give the
  988. 46:53police a little sketch
  989. 46:58to the news coverage afterward
  990. 47:01oh yeah very close
  991. 47:04into the newspapers and listened to the
  992. 47:07news
  993. 47:17one of the things Raiders said to me was
  994. 47:20that he always had bad luck with his
  995. 47:23crimes because something always seemed
  996. 47:26to go wrong
  997. 47:27and he always felt as if he were the
  998. 47:30victim
  999. 47:31it is because he sees his world from his
1000. 47:34point of view and no one else matters
1001. 47:37clearly he has not thought of his
1002. 47:40victims as human beings at all they
1003. 47:42belong to him and they're supposed to
1004. 47:44behave according to his fantasies and
  1005. 47:47when they don't
1006. 47:49he's the victim in his mind
1007. 47:54after the Otero case and the Catherine
1008. 47:58bright case the newspaper makes a report
1009. 48:01that there were some people that had
1010. 48:03been arrested that were indicating they
1011. 48:06might have been involved in the Otero
1012. 48:08killings the one thing BTK likes more
1013. 48:10than anything else is publicity so when
1014. 48:14suspects were in custody not Dennis
1015. 48:16Raider Raider was not happy about that
1016. 48:19so Raider is thinking about wait I'm the
  1017. 48:22guy where's the headline I want to see
1018. 48:25the headline and that ticked him off
  1019. 48:27[Music]
  1020. 48:29in October of 1974 a prominent newspaper
1021. 48:33man for the Wichita Eagle and Beacon
1022. 48:35received an anonymous telephone call
1023. 48:37telling him that there was a letter
1024. 48:39related to the Otero case on the second
1025. 48:40floor of the public library in an
  1026. 48:42engineering textbook
1027. 48:45detective Bernie der Watsky was assigned
1028. 48:47to go look for the letter and he did
  1029. 48:48find that
  1030. 48:50[Music]
1031. 48:51the letter started out with I did this I
1032. 48:55did it myself I did it alone
1033. 48:57so let's set this straight and then he
1034. 49:00goes into a recitation of all four of
1035. 49:03the victims what position they were
1036. 49:05found in how they were killed the types
1037. 49:07of Bindings that were used the types of
1038. 49:09knots that were used whoever wrote that
1039. 49:11had intimate knowledge of the crime
1040. 49:13scene or had committed the crime
1041. 49:17at the end of the letter he mentioned
1042. 49:19that the code words for me will be bind
1043. 49:23them torture them kill them
  1044. 49:25BTK
1045. 49:29what gave you that idea that you should
1046. 49:31have a name and how did you come up with
  1047. 49:32it
  1048. 49:39but other Killers didn't name themselves
1049. 49:42no they picked up other Media or the
  1050. 49:45police and I thought I'd be a little
1051. 49:49one of the things that motivates Dennis
1052. 49:51Rader a lot is the need for attention he
1053. 49:56wanted to be considered special
1054. 49:59and other serial killers he saw them as
1055. 50:03being famous so I think he named himself
1056. 50:06because he saw the way those names
1057. 50:10generated attention and he wanted to
  1058. 50:13terrorize Wichita
1059. 50:17the letter in 1974 indicated that he
1060. 50:21intended to continue to kill he said
1061. 50:23that he was occupied by a monster he
1062. 50:26doesn't know what the monster is going
1063. 50:27to do and that BTK doesn't have a choice
1064. 50:30in the victims that the monster picks
  1065. 50:32the victims
1066. 50:34the decision was made by the command at
1067. 50:36that time the letter should not be
1068. 50:39shared to the public because it was work
  1069. 50:42product of the investigation
1070. 50:45the eagle withheld the information from
1071. 50:48the public at the request of police and
1072. 50:51did not publicize that there was a
1073. 50:53serial killer and you know police had
1074. 50:55convinced editors at the paper at that
1075. 50:57time in the 70s that it was you know you
1076. 51:00don't want to panic the public
  1077. 51:02I had a paper
1078. 51:13when Dennis is trying to talk about
  1079. 51:15factor x he's saying here's the big
1080. 51:18mystery what is it that motivates me
1081. 51:22factor x was kind of what one would
1082. 51:26consider to be the evil part of him
1083. 51:29he was constantly daydreaming about how
1084. 51:32he can use sex to control others
1085. 51:36Vector X has been an overall Drive even
1086. 51:40today if I see something on TV or a
1087. 51:43picture or dark thinking about the old
1088. 51:45times and fantasy I still get that
1089. 51:47feeling you know that sexual feeling I
  1090. 51:49really do I can't I can't it's just
  1091. 51:51still there
  1092. 51:53he wants to say there's a factor x
1093. 51:56that's alive in me that will have its
  1094. 52:00way and there's not a lot I can do about
1095. 52:02that as a way to slip responsibility for
1096. 52:07the decisions he made and the actions he
  1097. 52:10took
1098. 52:11because it makes him seem larger than he
1099. 52:14actually is if we can't figure him out
  1100. 52:17he's a much bigger person
1101. 52:19but if he can be reduced to
1102. 52:22reasons for why he did it he's no longer
  1103. 52:25special
  1104. 52:29whoa
  1105. 52:32[Music]
1106. 52:37kind of like a volcano when do you think
  1107. 52:39that started for you
1108. 52:51let me take you back to your childhood
1109. 52:53you you haven't talked very much even to
1110. 52:56me about your father and your sense of
  1111. 52:58your father
  1112. 53:00okay
1113. 53:06what do you have baloney they kind of
1114. 53:14Dennis rated things to himself as a good
  1115. 53:16person who did some bad things I don't
  1116. 53:18buy that
1117. 53:19but he's certainly lives in an ordinary
1118. 53:24way most of the time if anyone wanted to
1119. 53:28have an association with him I mean you
1120. 53:31have to talk about ordinary things that
  1121. 53:33really aren't about serial murder
1122. 53:36well I mean feel free to to eat while
1123. 53:39you're talking if you if you think you
1124. 53:41can do both I don't want you to to waste
1125. 53:43that so let's go back to your childhood
1126. 53:49okay he was a really good male model he
1127. 53:52took his sub fishing taught us how to
1128. 53:54hunt uh he worked two jobs in lighting
1129. 53:57and he was just a busy man would you say
1130. 54:00would you say you were close to him
1131. 54:02growing up then yeah I was closer to
1132. 54:05probably him to Mom but uh
1133. 54:07they were both good parents
  1134. 54:09the common perception of a serial
1135. 54:13Killer's childhood is that they
1136. 54:15inevitably have endured some form of
1137. 54:19physical sexual or verbal abuse and
  1138. 54:23pretty serious abuse
1139. 54:25and we need to recognize that we're
1140. 54:27wrong about that and we need to stretch
1141. 54:30our concept to accommodate somebody who
  1142. 54:33didn't have child abuse
1143. 54:37Dennis Rader was born in a small town in
  1144. 54:41Southeastern Kansas
  1145. 54:43both grandparents had Farms
1146. 54:47there was prayer Bible reading
1147. 54:50it seemed as if he had basically an
  1148. 54:53All-American Boyhood
  1149. 54:56but Raider didn't mature beyond the
1150. 54:59childhood need for attention and one of
1151. 55:03the things we do see in serial killers
1152. 55:05especially those who have this
1153. 55:07Psychopathic kind of nature is an
1154. 55:10Arrested Development while he matured in
1155. 55:13other ways this need for attention
  1156. 55:16remains very infantile
1157. 55:19when Raider was a boy there was an
1158. 55:23incident that happened that he thinks of
  1159. 55:25as a formative event
1160. 55:31in the living room and under one of the
1161. 55:34sofas she got her the ring caught him
  1162. 55:36was a spring
1163. 55:38and she couldn't reach it with your
  1164. 55:40other hand
1165. 55:41because she was hurting so she asked
  1166. 55:43medical for help
1167. 55:45that image of her being a terror and
1168. 55:48kind of held is going into one of my
  1169. 55:52dark side
  1170. 55:53[Music]
1171. 55:55the expression on his mother's space was
1172. 55:58a part of factor x watching his mother
1173. 56:00who is typically in a more powerful
1174. 56:02position be utterly helpless translates
1175. 56:05through his development later to be
1176. 56:09that's the expression I want on the face
  1177. 56:11of my victims
  1178. 56:13as a child there was a big progression
1179. 56:17in his sexual Fantasy Life that slowly
1180. 56:21escalated and became increasingly more
  1181. 56:24deviant
1182. 56:27uh it's starting to abuse Farm cats
1183. 56:31build a box I'm going to cut out the top
1184. 56:33of it just for a cat head
  1185. 56:36and I get some milk
1186. 56:39and wait till one would get in there and
1187. 56:42I pull the string the Box should drop
  1188. 56:45over
1189. 56:46and let's stick his head up through the
  1190. 56:48hole
  1191. 56:49and I had a news for
  1192. 56:51I never knew that
1193. 56:53why did you like hanging cats
1194. 56:56there was some sexual excitement there
  1195. 56:58to see them hung
1196. 57:02he did admit that he had tortured
1197. 57:04kittens cats when he was younger and it
1198. 57:07seems that a lot of the serial killers
1199. 57:08prefer cats what they will tell you is
1200. 57:10that it sounds like a female in distress
  1201. 57:12when you torture a cat
1202. 57:15why does he not see the immorality of
1203. 57:18his treatment but also why does he
1204. 57:20relish it he loved utter helplessness
1205. 57:24and Desperation and needing him to
1206. 57:27decide to let them go it would certainly
1207. 57:30be a training ground for what is coming
1208. 57:33for him in the future
1209. 57:36at a young age one of the things was
1210. 57:39really fixated with was bondage and it
1211. 57:42led to his actually experimenting on
  1212. 57:44himself
1213. 57:45my fifth grade teacher she was a real
1214. 57:49dominating female and she used to pick
  1215. 57:52on weaklings like me
1216. 57:55but anyway she became my first fantasy
  1217. 57:57victim
1218. 57:59I would sneak out and do some window
1219. 58:02peeking and so I catch her occasionally
1220. 58:04in her bedroom that Forum I had my first
  1221. 58:07sexual outlet and it wasn't it wasn't
1222. 58:11normal because it wasn't with the female
1223. 58:13it was me tying myself up in a in a
1224. 58:16headed role against the fence and I had
  1225. 58:18this weird feeling
1226. 58:19and whoa what was this what happened
1227. 58:23to create that again I had to use
  1228. 58:26quantity
1229. 58:28the Rope is already become an arousal
1230. 58:31mechanism keeping on people has been
1231. 58:34something that has made him feel
1232. 58:35powerful now we put it together with a
1233. 58:38woman he wants to have power over quite
1234. 58:40specifically and he ejaculates this
  1235. 58:45cements the paraphilia
1236. 58:48is a trigger to arousal that is
1237. 58:52considered to be deviant sometimes to
1238. 58:56the point where they can't get aroused
  1239. 58:58in a normal way at all
1240. 59:01over time you start to need more more to
1241. 59:05stimulate yourself more to get excited
1242. 59:08the fantasy started to escalate even
1243. 59:11further to his wanting to carry it out
  1244. 59:14on others
1245. 59:16we see these childhood fantasies come
1246. 59:19full circle in the Otero murders where
1247. 59:22all four victims were tied up strangled
1248. 59:25or hanged like the cats
1249. 59:27and he replicated in his victims the
1250. 59:30look of helplessness he'd seen on his
1251. 59:32mother's face when her hand was stuck in
  1252. 59:34the sofa
1253. 59:40when Chief lamanian took over the
  1254. 59:42department in 1976 BTK really wasn't on
1255. 59:47anybody's immediate radar because after
1256. 59:501974 we did not hear from BTK for about
1257. 59:53two and a half years at that point that
1258. 59:56is enough time to go by that some of us
1259. 59:58speculated that perhaps he was in prison
1260. 1:00:00or he had been killed
  1261. 1:00:02[Music]
  1262. 1:00:04what authorities didn't know is that
1263. 1:00:07Raider was starting a family in the Park
  1264. 1:00:09City suburb of Wichita
1265. 1:00:13Dennis and his wife had their first
  1266. 1:00:15child in 1975.
  1267. 1:00:19Raider had gotten a job from a security
  1268. 1:00:22company
1269. 1:00:24in a way it was like the perfect job
1270. 1:00:27Dennis was one of the supervisors would
1271. 1:00:29come out and supervise the installation
1272. 1:00:31I mean how ironic is that
  1273. 1:00:34working at a security company enhanced
1274. 1:00:36his predatory activities he developed
1275. 1:00:39more skills and understanding of how to
1276. 1:00:42enter a home and how to get past a
  1277. 1:00:44security system
1278. 1:00:46I used to like to go to people's closets
1279. 1:00:48mess around in their Chester doors and
1280. 1:00:50stuff and buying nylon socks and panties
1281. 1:00:53and things of that nature that would
  1282. 1:00:55steal them
1283. 1:00:56that was kind of exciting so no one ever
1284. 1:01:00caught you or complained that things
  1285. 1:01:01were missing
1286. 1:01:05while Raider's wife was home taking care
1287. 1:01:08of their newborn he began to act on his
1288. 1:01:10fantasies again and his new job allowed
1289. 1:01:13him to troll for victims
1290. 1:01:16he was always looking for victims and he
1291. 1:01:18was always monitoring his victims
1292. 1:01:20activities he called him projects
1293. 1:01:22and one of the things he kept repeating
1294. 1:01:25to me throughout the time I spent with
1295. 1:01:26him is if you become my project and you
  1296. 1:01:29have a routine you're in trouble
1297. 1:01:33once you knew who you were going to
1298. 1:01:35Target what did that feel like to you
  1299. 1:01:38well it's
  1300. 1:01:40the Big Joe Hunter I guess you'd say
1301. 1:01:42he's got the Target or the animal and
1302. 1:01:46his sights I need a gun this is going to
  1303. 1:01:49be it

1306. 1:02:03this is the neighborhood where Dennis
1307. 1:02:06Rader would roam around looking at the
  1308. 1:02:09homes going backyards being a Boyer
1309. 1:02:12looking for what he called projects and
1310. 1:02:16what he really liked about this
1311. 1:02:17neighborhood was this was close to the
1312. 1:02:20interstate where it was a quick getaway
1313. 1:02:25for Raider a project is an incident that
1314. 1:02:30Raider has planned where he has targeted
  1315. 1:02:33or person
  1316. 1:02:35against which he's going to commit a
1317. 1:02:38crime he began to name them like someone
1318. 1:02:42playing the piano was Project piano so
1319. 1:02:45whenever he wanted to think about a
  1320. 1:02:48project he had a label
  1321. 1:02:51one day
1322. 1:02:53if I had to come up with some kind of
1323. 1:02:55nickname a lot of times you can name on
1324. 1:02:58a boat or the oil man they always name
  1325. 1:03:01their oil wells
1326. 1:03:03when we sort of back up on this and look
  1327. 1:03:05at it psychologically he's dehumanizing
  1328. 1:03:09people
1329. 1:03:11he can distance himself from them and
1330. 1:03:14what he's going to do with them
1331. 1:03:16any pain they feel and he lost other
1332. 1:03:18people is of no consequence to him
  1333. 1:03:21because they're projects

  1335. 1:03:26on March 17
1336. 1:03:281977 almost three years after he killed
1337. 1:03:31Catherine bright the pressure from his
1338. 1:03:34fantasies have been building and Raider
1339. 1:03:37was ready to kill again
1340. 1:03:40Raiders had his eye on several different
  1341. 1:03:43projects potential projects
1342. 1:03:46he dressed up in Tweed and you know nice
1343. 1:03:49shoes and a briefcase which was his
1344. 1:03:51James Bond outfit because he liked to
  1345. 1:03:54think of himself as a spy
1346. 1:03:58when he came to the first project
1347. 1:04:00project green he knocked at the door and
1348. 1:04:04no one answered and so he figured if one
  1349. 1:04:07project didn't work out there was
1350. 1:04:08another one down the street that he
1351. 1:04:10could try as well he was dressed to kill
1352. 1:04:13this is what he had in mind
1353. 1:04:17I was all geared up to do something and
1354. 1:04:19it didn't happen at project green where
1355. 1:04:21the girls were home but I think I went
1356. 1:04:23to a couple other houses knocked on the
1357. 1:04:24door so I was in the mood
1358. 1:04:26Raider then moved on to a different
  1359. 1:04:29project project blackout
1360. 1:04:31and again no results he did not want to
1361. 1:04:35let this day get wasted in his mind and
1362. 1:04:39so he saw a little boy and he thought if
  1363. 1:04:42that there's a little boy here he must
  1364. 1:04:44have a mother at home
1365. 1:04:47so that was random but the opportunity
1366. 1:04:50struck and I already had the plan what I
1367. 1:04:52was going to do and there was the
1368. 1:04:53opportunity so I latched on to it
1369. 1:04:58in my mind I was five but I was six
  1370. 1:05:01years old
  1371. 1:05:03just turned six
1372. 1:05:06my mom she was sick in bed
1373. 1:05:09seen me block up the road for can of
  1374. 1:05:12soup you know
1375. 1:05:14and on my way back
1376. 1:05:15man stops Me shows me a picture woman
  1377. 1:05:19and child
1378. 1:05:20Aspen did I know who it was
  1379. 1:05:25announcer I don't
  1380. 1:05:28about 15 minutes later
1381. 1:05:31come knocking on our door
  1382. 1:05:35opened
1383. 1:05:37their stood the same man
1384. 1:05:40they pushed me out of the way proceed to
  1385. 1:05:42come on in
1386. 1:05:43pulled down and blind turn off TV reach
  1387. 1:05:47it under
  1388. 1:05:49pull that again
1389. 1:05:51well from that point he talked to us is
  1390. 1:05:54in the bathroom
1391. 1:05:56put his kids in there
  1392. 1:05:59put blanket
1393. 1:06:01a couple toys in there
1394. 1:06:08push the bed against the other door
1395. 1:06:11there was a crack in the door
1396. 1:06:15just enough we can see out
1397. 1:06:19I was looking through the door
1398. 1:06:24can you tape her hands and her feet
  1399. 1:06:26behind her back
  1400. 1:06:30and
  1401. 1:06:32plastic bag overhead
1402. 1:06:36broke down around her neck laying face
  1403. 1:06:39down
  1404. 1:06:44he's dead
1405. 1:06:47I was ramming the bathroom door
1406. 1:06:51I finally broke a hole in it
  1407. 1:06:55we got out
  1408. 1:06:58I'm running around mom
  1409. 1:07:02a second
  1410. 1:07:14it's a
1411. 1:07:15image burned in my brain
  1412. 1:07:20it'll never go away
1413. 1:07:25anytime you have a Survivor who was
1414. 1:07:29approached by an offender you do learn
1415. 1:07:33more about his Mo his approach
1416. 1:07:36whether he was persistent or not what
1417. 1:07:39kinds of things did he say how did he
  1418. 1:07:41pass himself off
1419. 1:07:43Shirley had told the kids to calm down
1420. 1:07:46because she did not know she was in for
  1421. 1:07:48murder that day
1422. 1:07:50she might have said to the keep
1423. 1:07:53screaming keep screaming the neighbors
1424. 1:07:54might hear you she might have said that
1425. 1:07:56except that he calmed her and assured
1426. 1:07:58her if you just do what I say it'll be
  1427. 1:08:00over and I'll leave
  1428. 1:08:04demonstrator was of unforgiving
  1429. 1:08:06unrelenting
1430. 1:08:08Mad Men and Steve I've always felt very
1431. 1:08:14bad for him for what happened to him
1432. 1:08:15because BTK just didn't kill his mother
1433. 1:08:20BTK really killed him too
1434. 1:08:22my memory of my mom
  1435. 1:08:27took over everything for a while
  1436. 1:08:31I didn't care about having
  1437. 1:08:33care where I went
  1438. 1:08:37okay if I died
  1439. 1:08:39still sometimes I wish I did
  1440. 1:08:49at surely by Anne's home there's no
1441. 1:08:53empathy whatsoever for the kids or even
1442. 1:08:56seeing them as human beings
1443. 1:08:59Raider has a wife and a child at home
1444. 1:09:02and yet he doesn't seem to have the same
1445. 1:09:05feelings about what these kids are going
  1446. 1:09:08through as they're watching through this
1447. 1:09:10crack in the door as he's killing their
  1448. 1:09:13mother
1449. 1:09:14we're having the children there in
  1450. 1:09:17Shirley bayan's house did that bother
  1451. 1:09:20you at all
  1452. 1:09:21no no
  1453. 1:09:26bomber yeah
1454. 1:09:29you've got any aircraft shooting you
1455. 1:09:30down but your main focus is to drop the
1456. 1:09:32bombs on what they wanted to drop the
1457. 1:09:34Box on nothing else matters
1458. 1:09:40weren't you worried about what might
  1459. 1:09:41happen with them
1460. 1:09:47Raider was barely even aware of them
1461. 1:09:51which is exactly how the brain of a
1462. 1:09:54psychopath Works their very goal
1463. 1:09:56oriented and they're just going to keep
1464. 1:09:58going until they achieve it
1465. 1:10:03after the Vian murder BTK was back on
1466. 1:10:06the radar of a number of people at WPD
1467. 1:10:09some officers speculated that Shirley
1468. 1:10:11Bayan was a BTK victim because of the
  1469. 1:10:14way she was tied
1470. 1:10:16she was actually tied to the bed not
1471. 1:10:18just tied up and placed on the bed and
1472. 1:10:21there was some semen found in the
1473. 1:10:22immediate area of her body
1474. 1:10:25most of the cases of a semen discovered
1475. 1:10:27either on or near the bodies but it was
  1476. 1:10:29not a rape it wasn't discovered in the
  1477. 1:10:31bodies
1478. 1:10:38nope it was just a little bit too far
1479. 1:10:40I think even serial killers probably
1480. 1:10:42have some kind of taboo
  1481. 1:10:44yeah that was mine
  1482. 1:10:46I would not rape a female
1483. 1:10:49there's an odd thing about Dennis Rader
1484. 1:10:52in that he never seems to recognize that
1485. 1:10:55murder is the worst thing you can do so
1486. 1:10:59when he talks about raping too far
  1487. 1:11:02is absurd
1488. 1:11:04because in his fantasies he did rate
  1489. 1:11:06them
1490. 1:11:09Shirley was found with a bag over her
  1491. 1:11:11head
1492. 1:11:12and the fact that the bag was tied shut
1493. 1:11:14with a nightgown just seemed to ring of
  1494. 1:11:18BTK
1495. 1:11:20there were formal knots used not just
1496. 1:11:22someone just making Loops in a rope
  1497. 1:11:24until it was Secure
1498. 1:11:26when you start looking at the symmetry
1499. 1:11:28of the tying and bindings that's when
1500. 1:11:30the bizarre flavor of the
  1501. 1:11:33sadomasochistic interaction with the
1502. 1:11:35victims was there the bindings were not
1503. 1:11:37just for security but they were for
  1504. 1:11:39bondage gratification as well
1505. 1:11:42so I use coalitions on hands or on seat
1506. 1:11:46and also very hard not to get a nun
1507. 1:11:48basically you want that knot comes to
1508. 1:11:50its uh Peak there's no way you can get
1509. 1:11:52out of that so that was probably my
1510. 1:11:54favorite knot but the other one was uh
1511. 1:11:57tie a knot on the end of the line and
  1512. 1:11:59make a slip knot
1513. 1:12:01Dennis Rader often experimented with
1514. 1:12:04different forms of binding and knots
1515. 1:12:07that allowed them to make certain
1516. 1:12:10movements or restrict them further
1517. 1:12:13it's a part of the paraphilia that was
1518. 1:12:15the feeling of power and control
1519. 1:12:18and that was also a part of the fantasy
1520. 1:12:22Dennis Raider would take artifacts like
1521. 1:12:25a lot of serial killers do from the
1522. 1:12:26crime scenes and he would take items
1523. 1:12:29from his victims to dress in
1524. 1:12:31and to use as articles in his autoerotic
  1525. 1:12:35activities
1526. 1:12:36we had a pretty good feeling and if we
1527. 1:12:38find this guy there'll be no doubt
1528. 1:12:40because we'll find all his collection of
1529. 1:12:42things that he's stolen from these poor
  1530. 1:12:45victims
1531. 1:12:49do you ever think when you're in that
1532. 1:12:51cell about the possibility that you
1533. 1:12:53could one day face a firing squad
1534. 1:12:56they don't have firings guys in Colorado
  1535. 1:12:58and I don't think that in any Raider
1536. 1:13:00idolized other serial killers and craved
1537. 1:13:02the recognition and attention they
1538. 1:13:04received he wanted to be acknowledged as
  1539. 1:13:08being like them
  1540. 1:13:10but Raider worried that Shirley bayern's
  1541. 1:13:13kids had seen him
1542. 1:13:15he wanted recognition for this crime but
1543. 1:13:18he wanted to see what would happen so he
  1544. 1:13:20didn't immediately communicate with
  1545. 1:13:22police or the media
1546. 1:13:24how long had you been studying other
  1547. 1:13:26serial killers
1548. 1:13:35other models Harvey glattman yeah
  1549. 1:13:43platman was a serial killer from the 50s
1550. 1:13:46known as the Lonely Heart killer he
  1551. 1:13:50opposed us a professional photographer
  1552. 1:13:51in California Los Angeles
1553. 1:13:54and he would lure his victims by
1554. 1:13:57promising them that he could open the
  1555. 1:13:59doors for a modeling career or
1556. 1:14:00profession he would get more Sinister
1557. 1:14:03and the types of pictures he would take
1558. 1:14:06so pictures of them in certain types of
  1559. 1:14:09bondage and eventually he'd take control
1560. 1:14:10of them and in the pictures you can see
1561. 1:14:14the females reaction to the fear
1562. 1:14:19Raider wanted to replicate that
1563. 1:14:21expression in his victims where they
1564. 1:14:24would look at him recognize his complete
1565. 1:14:27power and control over them because it
1566. 1:14:31would make him feel dominant and
  1567. 1:14:34Powerful
1568. 1:14:36serial killers tend to keep killing but
1569. 1:14:39after the murder of Shirley Bayan Raider
  1570. 1:14:42would go quiet again
1571. 1:14:44but only until he spotted the perfect
  1572. 1:14:47victim
  1573. 1:14:53it's December of 1977. raider has
  1574. 1:14:58murdered six people
1575. 1:15:00he's gotten away with it he's feeling
  1576. 1:15:02cocky
1577. 1:15:05he's made mistakes he's had close calls
1578. 1:15:08he wants the next one to be just right
1579. 1:15:14when he came to this street he saw a
1580. 1:15:18young woman outside who fit exactly what
1581. 1:15:21he was looking for she was petite young
  1582. 1:15:24blonde Nancy Fox
1583. 1:15:27he stopped her he went to where she
1584. 1:15:30worked he wanted to get her routine so
1585. 1:15:32he knew when she'd be home and when she
  1586. 1:15:34wouldn't
1587. 1:15:35she'd taken a second job during the
1588. 1:15:38Christmas season and that was at the
1589. 1:15:40mall we'd go in and act like he was
1590. 1:15:42going to buy something looking for gifts
1591. 1:15:43just to interact with her
  1592. 1:15:45on December 8 1977 nine months after the
1593. 1:15:51murder of Shirley Bayan Dennis Rader
1594. 1:15:54came to Nancy Fox's house for the final
  1595. 1:15:57time
1596. 1:15:59he had already broken in and was sitting
1597. 1:16:01inside when she walked through the door
1598. 1:16:04when she realized he was sitting there
1599. 1:16:06and she says what do you want
1600. 1:16:08and he told her that he was a he always
  1601. 1:16:11used the word strange dude I'm a strange
1602. 1:16:14dude going to do some stuff with you if
  1603. 1:16:16you cooperate you'll be okay
1604. 1:16:19she was upset but he let her have a
1605. 1:16:22cigarette they sat and talked for a
1606. 1:16:24while at one point she then said let's
1607. 1:16:27get this over with so I can call the
  1608. 1:16:29police
1609. 1:16:32he learned that he needed to take
1610. 1:16:33control quickly so he took her to the
  1611. 1:16:35bedroom
1612. 1:16:37at this point he begins to mentally
  1613. 1:16:41torture her
1614. 1:16:42so that he can capture that Terror on
  1615. 1:16:45her face
1616. 1:16:46in exactly the way his adolescent
  1617. 1:16:49fantasy had formed
1618. 1:16:52you enjoyed the look of fear on your
  1619. 1:16:55victim's face well yes
1620. 1:17:03yes and although her faith
1621. 1:17:06it's just the idea that I had done it is
1622. 1:17:08all I needed it's like my mom when her
1623. 1:17:11finger was caught in that the couch she
  1624. 1:17:13was struggling
1625. 1:17:15as he was sitting the straddle over he
1626. 1:17:17leaned over and whispered him earlier on
1627. 1:17:19BTK I'm a bad dude that was the second
1628. 1:17:22scene where DNA was found or the seminal
1629. 1:17:26stains that were eventually used for DNA
1630. 1:17:28was on one of her nightgowns that was on
1631. 1:17:30the head of her bed
1632. 1:17:32but after the incident then I've had
1633. 1:17:34time to quickly go through some of her
1634. 1:17:36stuff and I took some of her nicer
1635. 1:17:39clothes or clips and stockings and
1636. 1:17:41things of that nature and my tokens
1637. 1:17:44when he was telling us the story about
1638. 1:17:46killing Nancy Fox he recalled with
1639. 1:17:49specificity that the details of the
  1640. 1:17:52murder
1641. 1:17:53her pleas and her words and her fear
1642. 1:17:57this man committed these things to
1643. 1:17:59memory and he lived these things day
1644. 1:18:02after day in his fantasy world although
1645. 1:18:04he looked normal on the outside it just
1646. 1:18:06gives you a glimpse of the monster that
  1647. 1:18:08was living inside him
1648. 1:18:11here I go home and my wife's there you
1649. 1:18:14know so I had to make up a story why it
1650. 1:18:17was running a little late we were having
1651. 1:18:19car trouble at that time so that's not
1652. 1:18:22just blamed it on the car
1653. 1:18:24but Nancy Fox having been in the house
1654. 1:18:28and seeing how very small it was it was
1655. 1:18:31very clear that he had picked a place
1656. 1:18:34where he could easily keep total control
  1657. 1:18:36over the situation
1658. 1:18:38because his ultimate goal was to get her
1659. 1:18:43to the point where she felt helpless and
1660. 1:18:46there was no place for her to go and
1661. 1:18:49that way he could enjoy his Ultimate
  1662. 1:18:52Fantasy
1663. 1:18:54Raider said Nancy Fox was his favorite
1664. 1:18:56case because everything went the way he
  1665. 1:18:58had orchestrated it
1666. 1:19:00now he wanted some acknowledgment that
1667. 1:19:04BTK had killed again so he called it in
1668. 1:19:08and listened for the news because this
1669. 1:19:12is his special murder he wants something
1670. 1:19:16associated with it that he can cut out
1671. 1:19:18of the newspaper and keep as a token
  1672. 1:19:24on a cold morning in December of 1977
1673. 1:19:27the police dispatcher received an
  1674. 1:19:30anonymous call
  1675. 1:19:33assistant
  1676. 1:19:35you will find a homicide at least 43
1677. 1:19:39South Pershing to Nancy Park I'm sorry
  1678. 1:19:44sir I can't understand you so what is
  1679. 1:19:45your address
1680. 1:19:59have homicide occurred here at 843 South
  1681. 1:20:02Pershing we received a call about 8 20
  1682. 1:20:05from an individual
  1683. 1:20:07and I said there's a homicide and hung
  1684. 1:20:09up the phone
1685. 1:20:11officers came out and we have checked
  1686. 1:20:13and we do have a young lady that's
1687. 1:20:15is a victim of a homicide was she shot
1688. 1:20:18or stand now she appears to been
  1689. 1:20:19strangled this time
1690. 1:20:21the officers that I knew thought it was
1691. 1:20:23pretty arrogant of the killer to call
1692. 1:20:26when I made the phone call about fox fox
1693. 1:20:29thing had already happened and there was
  1694. 1:20:31nothing nothing about it and that's
1695. 1:20:34probably kind of like a cat and mouse
1696. 1:20:36thing I went ahead and used the phone
1697. 1:20:37stupid I was so afraid that someone
  1698. 1:20:40would id'd that say well I know that
  1699. 1:20:42voice well that's Dennis Rader
1700. 1:20:45he made the call that had put him at
  1701. 1:20:47risk in ways he hadn't anticipated
1702. 1:20:50there were definitely times when he
  1703. 1:20:52expected to be caught
1704. 1:20:54yet when he went uncaught it just
1705. 1:20:58confirms for him there must be something
1706. 1:21:00special about him and it must be because
1707. 1:21:03he's smarter than the police
1708. 1:21:06he said that was the stupidest thing he
1709. 1:21:08ever did was make that phone call
1710. 1:21:10because now there was a vocal footprint
1711. 1:21:13of him that could give him way
1712. 1:21:16it's been over three years since he left
1713. 1:21:18the letter at the library about the
  1714. 1:21:21Otero murders
  1715. 1:21:23and now he's craving publicity
  1716. 1:21:26and he'd murdered twice more
  1717. 1:21:28but police still haven't revealed
  1718. 1:21:30there's a serial killer in Wichita
1719. 1:21:33this keeps them in control of the
1720. 1:21:35narrative and drives BTK to the media
1721. 1:21:41I was on duty at cake as the chief
  1722. 1:21:43photographer
1723. 1:21:45the receptionist out front called back
1724. 1:21:48and I took the call and she said you
1725. 1:21:50know I have an odd letter here
1726. 1:21:52so took a look at it and it was a letter
1727. 1:21:57talking about Nancy Fox detailing
1728. 1:22:00several different things but the
1729. 1:22:01chilling moment in that letter was the
  1730. 1:22:04line
1731. 1:22:05how many people do I have to kill before
1732. 1:22:08I get my name in the paper
  1733. 1:22:11b t k
1734. 1:22:14executive producer Ron lone received the
1735. 1:22:16letter he's with us today to give us the
1736. 1:22:18information Ron Jack the communication
  1737. 1:22:21came in the form of a two-page
  1738. 1:22:22typewritten letter addressed to k-a-k-e
1739. 1:22:25channel 10. it was signed with the
1740. 1:22:27initials BTK BTK claims to have
1741. 1:22:30strangled a total of seven women seven
1742. 1:22:33people rather mostly women he provided a
1743. 1:22:36list of his victims beginning with the
  1744. 1:22:37number five
1745. 1:22:38during the newscast the police chief
  1746. 1:22:40walks into the studio
  1747. 1:22:42takes a seat and
1748. 1:22:45we cut the lemonion and lemunion picks
  1749. 1:22:48up the story
1750. 1:22:49BTK is silk has killed seven people
1751. 1:22:51Chief what kind of leads do you have
  1752. 1:22:55very honestly we have
1753. 1:22:57no solid leads at all we have uh General
1754. 1:23:00leads we have circumstantial evidence we
1755. 1:23:03have absolutely nothing that will point
1756. 1:23:05us to any one particular individual
1757. 1:23:08Chief lamanian made the decision
1758. 1:23:11that In fairness to the public he needed
1759. 1:23:14to warn them that there was a serial
1760. 1:23:16killer afoot in Wichita after all
1761. 1:23:18this guy is in our community and he's
  1762. 1:23:22killing our people
1763. 1:23:24when they finally announced that there
1764. 1:23:26was a serial killer on the loose in
1765. 1:23:28Wichita what what was that like for you
  1766. 1:23:30it was a pretty
1767. 1:23:35in the wall they finally recognized me
1768. 1:23:37you know as a felt kind of coffee at
1769. 1:23:40that time I guess you would say
1770. 1:23:42Dennis Raider loved the idea that he was
1771. 1:23:45a serial killer it was the hottest
  1772. 1:23:49aspect of his
  1773. 1:23:51identity
1774. 1:23:52and his need for attention would
1775. 1:23:55ultimately be his downfall the most
1776. 1:23:57important thing that everyone can do is
1777. 1:24:00certainly be aware that we do have a
1778. 1:24:02very serious problem that was like an
1779. 1:24:05atomic bomb going off in the city
1780. 1:24:08the whole city was turned upside down
  1781. 1:24:10there were 200 000 people here changed
  1782. 1:24:13the lives of 200 000 people you're
  1783. 1:24:15dealing with a person who is a perverted
1784. 1:24:17a person that is sick people were just
  1785. 1:24:20terrified
1786. 1:24:22question for Wichita back then is how
1787. 1:24:25many more people are going to die
  1788. 1:24:34after BTK was apprehended
  1789. 1:24:39detectives
1790. 1:24:40searched his office and his home and
1791. 1:24:44came up with a stash of Polaroids that
1792. 1:24:47looked as if there were male victims
1793. 1:24:52and they asked him who his male victims
  1794. 1:24:55were
1795. 1:24:56and he didn't understand what they meant
1796. 1:24:58and they mentioned these Polaroids and
  1797. 1:25:01then he said oh that's me
1798. 1:25:09and so I wrote that up and well behold I
1799. 1:25:12could take pictures of myself
1800. 1:25:14you know what I had was the squeegee
1801. 1:25:16ball because basically you were in the
1802. 1:25:18corridor to your hand and then somewhere
1803. 1:25:20I hit the ball when I was in my pictures
1804. 1:25:22and I just squeezed that ball and the
  1805. 1:25:24forwarded clicked
1806. 1:25:29he would dress in slips and female
1807. 1:25:32underwear that he had stolen he would
1808. 1:25:34wear a mask that had makeup on it a wig
1809. 1:25:39cross-dressing and finding myself up as
1810. 1:25:42a sexual fantasy like like I was the
  1811. 1:25:44victim
1812. 1:25:46Raider told himself that acting out
  1813. 1:25:50these fantasies
1814. 1:25:52helped him diminish the desire to kill
  1815. 1:25:55somebody
1816. 1:25:57but on the other hand he's also
1817. 1:25:59completely immersed in what it's like to
  1818. 1:26:02be a victim
1819. 1:26:03feeling the ropes around him wanting to
  1820. 1:26:07do this to somebody
1821. 1:26:09and the more he did that the kind of
1822. 1:26:12insured that he would act out again
  1823. 1:26:20[Music]
1824. 1:26:29sexually compelled serial killers tend
1825. 1:26:33to get addicted to what they're doing
1826. 1:26:36they tend not to have control over the
  1827. 1:26:40addiction
1828. 1:26:42but Raider did take breaks
1829. 1:26:45he went three years he went five years
1830. 1:26:50so he stands apart from many of them
1831. 1:26:54in that it's more an identity thing
1832. 1:26:58he wants to be a serial killer than that
  1833. 1:27:02he can't help himself
1834. 1:27:04because he could help himself
  1835. 1:27:06and did
1836. 1:27:09through the work I've been doing with
1837. 1:27:11Dennis Rader I'm hoping to dissolve some
  1838. 1:27:14stereotypes
1839. 1:27:15to include outliers like him and show
1840. 1:27:19that we need to accommodate more data
1841. 1:27:22than we have in the past about serial
  1842. 1:27:25killers
  1843. 1:27:30certainly be
1844. 1:27:33a problem when the announcement came out
1845. 1:27:36from the police that there was a serial
1846. 1:27:38killer in Wichita Raider found that
1847. 1:27:42exciting finally he had gotten some
  1848. 1:27:45attention even though they didn't know
1849. 1:27:47who it was he enjoyed the idea that he
1850. 1:27:50was terrorizing the Wichita Area
1851. 1:27:55the hunt began Friday when cake received
1852. 1:27:57this letter from the man police say is
1853. 1:27:59the killer of seven people over the past
1854. 1:28:01four years he calls himself the BTK
1855. 1:28:03strangle of promises to kill me
1856. 1:28:06they would say something about it on TV
  1857. 1:28:08the oppk sent us a letter
1858. 1:28:11that was an extremely big high I can
  1859. 1:28:14tell you that
1860. 1:28:15why do you think you wanted this
  1861. 1:28:17recognition
1862. 1:28:19along my childhood I've always felt like
  1863. 1:28:21I was an underdog
1864. 1:28:23and that uh somewhere along the lines of
  1865. 1:28:26getting a high in recognition I think
1866. 1:28:28it's like the movie stars and the sage
1867. 1:28:30people they see the picture in a
  1868. 1:28:32newspaper or a story about them I think
  1869. 1:28:34they get a rush on that
1870. 1:28:36Raider never grows up in terms of the
1871. 1:28:39attention he needs it all goes back to
1872. 1:28:41that arrested development of course keep
  1873. 1:28:45in mind you're not dealing with a quote
1874. 1:28:46normal criminal assuming that the person
1875. 1:28:48is still alive that person is going to
  1876. 1:28:50kill again
1877. 1:28:51when Chief lamanian announced that we
1878. 1:28:54did in fact have a serial killer
1879. 1:28:56people were frightened it had changed
1880. 1:29:00the entire complexion of how people went
1881. 1:29:02about their daily routines in Wichita
  1882. 1:29:05police were just baffled they didn't
1883. 1:29:08have an answer usually if somebody got
1884. 1:29:10murdered in Wichita we had an answer
  1885. 1:29:12pretty quick
1886. 1:29:14saying Wichita and the term serial
1887. 1:29:16killer in the same sentence I never
  1888. 1:29:18thought I'd do that
1889. 1:29:20and particularly terrifying for the
  1890. 1:29:22young women
1891. 1:29:24because are they going to be next and
  1892. 1:29:26that's what everybody thought
1893. 1:29:28vtk messed with your mind
1894. 1:29:31he was controlling the police department
1895. 1:29:33he was controlling the news media and he
  1896. 1:29:35was controlling the public
  1897. 1:29:37[Music]
1898. 1:29:39while Wichita is reeling in Fright
1899. 1:29:42Raider is going about his business
1900. 1:29:44pursuing his degree in the
  1901. 1:29:47administration of justice
1902. 1:29:49while you were in school you were also
  1903. 1:29:53committing your own crimes where you're
1904. 1:29:56listening for things that would help you
1905. 1:30:00yes I was very careful with the
  1906. 1:30:02forensics I basically my fingerprints
1907. 1:30:07and I wore rubber closed ones that you
  1908. 1:30:10use when you're washing dishes
1909. 1:30:13he learned a lot about how police
1910. 1:30:15investigated crimes which helped him to
1911. 1:30:18know what to do what to avoid
  1912. 1:30:21that subject matter
1913. 1:30:23just helped him to become a better
  1914. 1:30:25predator
1915. 1:30:27what did you want to do with your degree
1916. 1:30:39serial killers who are attracted to law
  1917. 1:30:41enforcement know that a police officer
1918. 1:30:45is in position to know a lot about
1919. 1:30:47potential victims and they can approach
1920. 1:30:50people with a sense of authority by
1921. 1:30:53flashing a badge and getting people to
1922. 1:30:55go walk away with them
1923. 1:30:57we not only read of course what he wrote
1924. 1:31:00every piece of paper was examined
1925. 1:31:03everything was looked at for evidence
1926. 1:31:05not one piece ever had a fingerprint had
1927. 1:31:08a hair had a fiber that could be
1928. 1:31:10identified and to me that's why he feels
1929. 1:31:13confident in sending these letters
1930. 1:31:16you would get these mailings and they
1931. 1:31:18would be in all kinds of bizarre shapes
1932. 1:31:20I thought there might be something
1933. 1:31:21symbolic about what he was sending it
1934. 1:31:23was just the fact that he thought he
1935. 1:31:24might have touched it and he didn't want
1936. 1:31:25anyone to see his fingerprints
1937. 1:31:28Raider has an attitude that he is
  1938. 1:31:31smarter than other people because he's
  1939. 1:31:33more Vigilant he's more attuned he
1940. 1:31:36watches people as a predator in ways
1941. 1:31:39that most people are not doing so as
1942. 1:31:42he's also developing knowledge about law
  1943. 1:31:44enforcement and investigation procedures
  1944. 1:31:47and forensic practices that's just
1945. 1:31:50increasing his sense of now I know what
1946. 1:31:52to do and no one will be able to touch
  1947. 1:31:56me
1948. 1:31:57studying that is very important to our
1949. 1:32:01understanding of serial killers because
1950. 1:32:04if they really believe they are
  1951. 1:32:07Untouchable that's where they'll make
  1952. 1:32:09their mistake
1953. 1:32:11as my partner and I tried to puzzle out
1954. 1:32:13what we could do to advance the case
1955. 1:32:15really the only thing that we knew of
1956. 1:32:18that he had created and touched hell was
1957. 1:32:22the communications now the letters were
1958. 1:32:25typewritten and then copied multiple
  1959. 1:32:27times
1960. 1:32:28in 1978 there was not a copy machine on
  1961. 1:32:31everyone's desk
1962. 1:32:33so we sent a detective to hand carry the
1963. 1:32:36evidence in Rochester and had Xerox work
1964. 1:32:40with the material for about a week
1965. 1:32:43they were able to trace one of those
1966. 1:32:45copies by looking at the fracture and
1967. 1:32:48scratch marks that were present on the
1968. 1:32:50plate that you lay the copying material
  1969. 1:32:52on
1970. 1:32:54and they were able to
1971. 1:32:56trace the two copy machines back to
  1972. 1:32:58public
1973. 1:32:59use copy machines the kind where you
1974. 1:33:01just put a nickel in the slot and make a
1975. 1:33:03copy one was in the basement of a
1976. 1:33:04building at Wichita State University and
1977. 1:33:07the other one was on the second floor of
1978. 1:33:08the public library actually where the
1979. 1:33:10first Otero letter was found
1980. 1:33:13the one thing that we did not have
1981. 1:33:14before was that somehow this perpetrator
  1982. 1:33:18had a connection to Wichita State
1983. 1:33:21one of the people that went to our
1984. 1:33:23church worked with drocks so he
1985. 1:33:25eventually figured out one of my
1986. 1:33:27original letters came from the coffee
1987. 1:33:30from WSU he was that sharp enough that
  1988. 1:33:33whoa
1989. 1:33:34after I found that out whatever our
1990. 1:33:36coffee got and send that in I went to
  1991. 1:33:37different copies before I started it
1992. 1:33:39after you knew that they had traced your
1993. 1:33:43xeroxing to Wichita State to scare you
1994. 1:33:47that they were closing in on you
1995. 1:33:51prepared for the police to come knocking
  1996. 1:33:53on the door
1997. 1:33:58there was times when I thought they were
1998. 1:34:00closing in and I would move things
1999. 1:34:03around and kind of clean up a little bit
  2000. 1:34:07here there
2001. 1:34:09would keep these journals to describe
2002. 1:34:12what he was doing he had his own
2003. 1:34:14drawings plus he had various items for
  2004. 1:34:17his hit kids
2005. 1:34:19as these things piled up
2006. 1:34:21he needed places to secure them against
2007. 1:34:24anyone finding them and figuring things
  2008. 1:34:27out
2009. 1:34:28so basically the the items from both his
2010. 1:34:31murders and his fantasies went into
2011. 1:34:33these hidey holes I had some cabinets at
2012. 1:34:37home that I could hike up here
  2013. 1:34:39there is a shed
  2014. 1:34:42I've had no barns
2015. 1:34:47underneath the house across the space
2016. 1:34:51during my work with Dennis Rader one of
2017. 1:34:55the things he made for me was a map of
  2018. 1:34:59these hidey holes
2019. 1:35:01the map itself indicates the various
2020. 1:35:04places around Wichita he would have gone
2021. 1:35:07to hide some things like he would find
2022. 1:35:10an abandoned piece of equipment that had
2023. 1:35:13sat there for months so it looked like
2024. 1:35:14nobody was going back to it so he might
2025. 1:35:17use that as a temporary stash he buried
  2026. 1:35:20a few things
2027. 1:35:22it was important for him to have this
2028. 1:35:24rigidity this regularity of the map
2029. 1:35:28which is exactly the way he lived his
  2030. 1:35:31life
2031. 1:35:32and after 1979 BTK seemed to have
  2032. 1:35:36vanished
2033. 1:35:38BTK all of a sudden just kind of
2034. 1:35:40disappeared from public eye there were
2035. 1:35:43no murders that we knew of everything
2036. 1:35:46kind of died down and started to get
2037. 1:35:48back to normal in Wichita Kansas
2038. 1:35:51you got Wichita all in a frenzy over a
2039. 1:35:54serial killer and then you went quiet
  2040. 1:35:56what were you doing
  2041. 1:36:02at that time
  2042. 1:36:05graduated in 79. 9 so there was another
  2043. 1:36:08fact
  2044. 1:36:12Factory thing if you
2045. 1:36:14when you ask an expert why a seal killer
2046. 1:36:17stops they know when they're going to
2047. 1:36:19tell you they die or they are in prison
2048. 1:36:21and can't have access to other victims
2049. 1:36:24but he said he was always hunting it
2050. 1:36:27just had to be perfect for him to decide
  2051. 1:36:30to go forward with a hit
2052. 1:36:34he liked his family life and he liked
2053. 1:36:36the idea that he was BTK and nobody knew
  2054. 1:36:44that's collecting detecting magazines
2055. 1:36:46and sketches and Slick cars like that
  2056. 1:36:50continued
2057. 1:36:52Dennis he would get three by five index
  2058. 1:36:55cards
2059. 1:36:56and he would cut out pictures of models
2060. 1:36:59out of advertisements and he would affix
2061. 1:37:02it to the card and then on the back he
  2062. 1:37:04would give her a name and
2063. 1:37:06characteristics likes and dislikes and
2064. 1:37:10then he would put a card in the seat
2065. 1:37:14beside him as he would ride around and
2066. 1:37:17he would you know I'm spending the day
2067. 1:37:19with Sally or or whoever it was like he
2068. 1:37:23had a relationship he would talk dirty
2069. 1:37:26to this three by five card the Slick ad
2070. 1:37:28then before the family we get home he
2071. 1:37:30would go get in the shower with his card
2072. 1:37:33and masturbate that was his preferred
2073. 1:37:35means of sexual gratification he said
2074. 1:37:38that's why you don't have more victims
  2075. 1:37:40dead because I enjoyed playing with
2076. 1:37:42myself as much as I enjoyed play with
  2077. 1:37:43others
  2078. 1:37:44[Music]
2079. 1:37:45Dennis Raider we had the opportunity to
2080. 1:37:47travel the entire state of Kansas and
2081. 1:37:50because he was traveling and living in
2082. 1:37:52motels he said that gave him the
2083. 1:37:53opportunity to practice his bondage
2084. 1:37:59that's when the motel party started
2085. 1:38:02one of the things that Raider did to
2086. 1:38:04kind of compensate for the fact that he
2087. 1:38:06didn't have time for victims was come up
2088. 1:38:10with what he called Motel parties
  2089. 1:38:12and the motel parties were auto-erotic
2090. 1:38:16kinds of activities he had dolls that he
2091. 1:38:21used to help facilitate his imagination
  2092. 1:38:23and he would experiment
  2093. 1:38:26I work with a sexy frizzy
  2094. 1:38:29by doing bondage
2095. 1:38:32a lot of times I have pictures of the
2096. 1:38:34girls and go through they have the lamb
  2097. 1:38:36out
2098. 1:38:37rearrange them look at them
2099. 1:38:39or bring things out from the hiding
2100. 1:38:42holes of my collection that I got from
  2101. 1:38:44victims
2102. 1:38:46Raider often would take items from his
2103. 1:38:49victims homes that he could then use to
2104. 1:38:53replicate what he had done to them but
2105. 1:38:56in an autoerotic sort of scenario so he
2106. 1:39:00might dress in a slip or pantyhose or
2107. 1:39:03underwear that he had taken and imagine
2108. 1:39:07what it must have been like
2109. 1:39:10for one of his victims to know that they
  2110. 1:39:14were about to die
  2111. 1:39:19[Music]
2112. 1:39:21when I was backing up and ready to go
2113. 1:39:23out of town I would take enough of those
2114. 1:39:27things with me when Paul was at work and
2115. 1:39:30I had time off I would wash all the
2116. 1:39:32stuff clean it all up and try it out and
2117. 1:39:34I was trying to be real careful I didn't
2118. 1:39:36leave anything in there and then I'd
2119. 1:39:38hide that back in my regular closet
2120. 1:39:40Raider grew careless and there were
2121. 1:39:43times when he would use the privacy of
2122. 1:39:46the home to do some of his autoerotic
  2123. 1:39:50activities dress himself and a woman's
  2124. 1:39:52slip maybe his wife's put a noose around
  2125. 1:39:55his neck
2126. 1:39:57and at one point his wife came home
  2127. 1:40:00unexpectedly
  2128. 1:40:01my wife
  2129. 1:40:04[Music]
2130. 1:40:06got really upset and I was upset that I
2131. 1:40:08got caught she just told me this is it
2132. 1:40:10you ever do the skin and ever catch you
2133. 1:40:12we're going to leave that don't take the
  2134. 1:40:14kids we're gonna divorce you
2135. 1:40:16I will make sure that would never happen
  2136. 1:40:19again
2137. 1:40:20I think the fact that Raider had put his
2138. 1:40:23marriage and his family and his whole
2139. 1:40:26life on the line when he was indulging
2140. 1:40:29in his autoerotic activities speaks to
  2141. 1:40:32the addiction of it
2142. 1:40:34but also his belief that he was really
2143. 1:40:37smarter than people he was special and
2144. 1:40:41he just wasn't going to get caught
2145. 1:40:44there was a time where you thought about
  2146. 1:40:46suicide
  2147. 1:40:48you know I put a 357 in my mouth
2148. 1:40:52I I just felt to a point where maybe
2149. 1:40:56with the man upstairs or something with
  2150. 1:40:58the family
2151. 1:41:00God but the time has come
  2152. 1:41:04basically stalking somebody else
2153. 1:41:07so I got another person I'm set up for
2154. 1:41:10I need to end this
  2155. 1:41:13because I want to take somebody's life
  2156. 1:41:15again
2157. 1:41:21you put a load of 357 in your mouth
2158. 1:41:29to take my life and what did it feel
2159. 1:41:31like when you didn't pull the trigger
2160. 1:41:33and you put the gun down then what then
2161. 1:41:35what went to your mind ah well I guess I
  2162. 1:41:39checked out
  2163. 1:41:41I just couldn't do it
2164. 1:41:43well it sounds like you gave it a lot of
2165. 1:41:45thought was that about having regrets
  2166. 1:41:47and or remorse
2167. 1:41:50building could agree one time I was more
2168. 1:41:53religious knowing him now but I thought
2169. 1:41:55well gosh if indeed heaven doesn't exist
2170. 1:41:58what will my green cards think of me
  2171. 1:42:00what I'm doing all this
2172. 1:42:01but my concept on religion right now is
2173. 1:42:05a lot different than you should be okay
2174. 1:42:07I wouldn't call it remorse so much as
2175. 1:42:10just how did my life get this way maybe
2176. 1:42:14I should end it before I do anything to
  2177. 1:42:16anyone else
2178. 1:42:18but I think those moments were pretty
  2179. 1:42:21temporary
2180. 1:42:24the first thing you have to realize
  2181. 1:42:25about Psychopaths is that they're wired
  2182. 1:42:27different they don't feel emotions the
2183. 1:42:30same way regular people do the best way
  2184. 1:42:32to describe a psychopath dealing with
2185. 1:42:35emotions like guilt or shame or remorse
2186. 1:42:37which don't exist for them is if
  2187. 1:42:40emotions are color they're colorblind
2188. 1:42:42regular people in the in the normal
2189. 1:42:44population we can look at a traffic
2190. 1:42:47light to see red for stop yellow for
  2191. 1:42:49caution green for go
2192. 1:42:52a psychopath they learn okay the light
  2193. 1:42:54at the top
2194. 1:42:55means stop the light in the middle means
2195. 1:42:57caution the light at the bottom means
2196. 1:42:59green but they don't see the colors
2197. 1:43:01they're just following the norms and
2198. 1:43:03customs and and you know laws in society
  2199. 1:43:07which if you're a psychopath don't apply
  2200. 1:43:09to them
2201. 1:43:11Dennis had a number of jobs which he was
2202. 1:43:15able to travel he worked in the security
2203. 1:43:17company after he lost that job he worked
  2204. 1:43:21for the Census Bureau
2205. 1:43:23that let him go to other states where he
2206. 1:43:28had the opportunity and took the
2207. 1:43:30opportunity to at least watch for
2208. 1:43:32victims sometimes stalk them and even
2209. 1:43:35plan for doing something to them
2210. 1:43:37in one town he actually dug a grave for
2211. 1:43:41someone that he believed he was going to
  2212. 1:43:43murder
2213. 1:43:44is there a possibility that there could
  2214. 1:43:46be more murders
2215. 1:43:48the one thing that bothered me in in
  2216. 1:43:50reviewing the yotero files
2217. 1:43:53was it was difficult for me as a
2218. 1:43:55homicide investigator to grasp the idea
  2219. 1:43:57that a person's first killing would be
2220. 1:44:00four members of a fan how do you control
2221. 1:44:02and and commit four murders and very
  2222. 1:44:06calculated murders I mean bringing
2223. 1:44:08weapons with you bringing the
  2224. 1:44:10instruments of binding everything
2225. 1:44:12it just didn't seem plausible to me
2226. 1:44:16because he did take out of state trips
2227. 1:44:19during a time period when he talked
2228. 1:44:21about the urge or factor x being very
  2229. 1:44:25strong I think it's possible there might
  2230. 1:44:28be other victims
2231. 1:44:30so if there are I want to be the person
  2232. 1:44:33he tells that to
2233. 1:44:35remember the dream you sent to me
2234. 1:44:38I want to read that back to you and see
2235. 1:44:41if you have anything to say about it do
  2236. 1:44:43you mind
2237. 1:44:45okay so the dream was about a boxcar
  2238. 1:44:50and here's what you wrote
2239. 1:44:53one end had an old-fashioned Barber Shop
2240. 1:44:56like my grandpa cook had
2241. 1:44:59in my dream I'm working on a letter to
  2242. 1:45:02you
2243. 1:45:03so it is spread out on the table
2244. 1:45:06I get my call number for a haircut and
2245. 1:45:09realize there is too much stuff left out
  2246. 1:45:12for eyes to see
2247. 1:45:13so I walk back to put it into my black
  2248. 1:45:16briefcase
2249. 1:45:18then the alarm clock goes off in my
2250. 1:45:20dream and I'm trying to shut it off and
2251. 1:45:22at the same time two police officers
2252. 1:45:25come in one Taps me on the shoulder and
2253. 1:45:28says we know you did more than ten
2254. 1:45:32then I awake to find out the real alarm
  2255. 1:45:35clock is buzzing away
2256. 1:45:41I've always really wondered about that
2257. 1:45:45dream and what it meant and it sounded
2258. 1:45:47like you meant some very dark things
  2259. 1:45:51it does
2260. 1:45:53the dream suggests he's about to tell me
  2261. 1:45:58something
2262. 1:45:59that the police already suspects because
2263. 1:46:02there are two officers who come in
2264. 1:46:05and it has to do with his darkest
2265. 1:46:08secrets that he might have been about to
2266. 1:46:10tell me and then decided not to
2267. 1:46:12Saved by the Bell because the actual
2268. 1:46:15alarm was actually ringing and woke him
2269. 1:46:18up this is a dream you had and you wrote
2270. 1:46:21it to me what do you think it means
  2271. 1:46:24yeah
2272. 1:46:26could he be holding something back yeah
2273. 1:46:29serial killers often do because one of
2274. 1:46:32the things they're motivated by is power
2275. 1:46:34and control and if he has a little
2276. 1:46:36secret little dirty secret that could be
2277. 1:46:38just a piece of power and control that
2278. 1:46:40he maintains and he's got to have
  2279. 1:46:42something you're clearly protecting
2280. 1:46:44secrets in this dream and it is related
  2281. 1:46:48to your BTK activities I'm really
2282. 1:46:51curious about what else there is that
2283. 1:46:54you want would want to tell me
  2284. 1:46:57um well
  2285. 1:46:59[Music]
2286. 1:47:07this dream is related to your BTK
2287. 1:47:10activities and it is something that
2288. 1:47:13you're writing to me but you don't want
2289. 1:47:15other people to find it
2290. 1:47:18and I kind of recall a little bit about
  2291. 1:47:20the
  2292. 1:47:25basically uh
  2293. 1:47:27as I told the police
  2294. 1:47:29can
  2295. 1:47:31candidate
  2296. 1:47:32[Music]
  2297. 1:47:34okay well let's let's continue this
2298. 1:47:37thinking about this conversation and if
2299. 1:47:40you do have things uh that you could
2300. 1:47:42write down that would be great
2301. 1:47:48his explanation for it is pretty
  2302. 1:47:50superficial
  2303. 1:47:52and deflective
2304. 1:47:55and I think maybe he regrets sending it
  2305. 1:47:57to me
  2306. 1:47:58[Music]
2307. 1:48:02whenever Raider would decide somebody
2308. 1:48:05was going to be a victim they
  2309. 1:48:08immediately were dehumanized entirely
  2310. 1:48:10they became
2311. 1:48:12Pawns in his game they were projects
2312. 1:48:16he doesn't think of victims as human
  2313. 1:48:19beings he doesn't think about the
2314. 1:48:20repercussions on their family members
2315. 1:48:23even today it's still so difficult to
2316. 1:48:28get him to admit that they were human
2317. 1:48:30beings and he caused a great deal of
2318. 1:48:33catastrophic trauma in the lives of all
2319. 1:48:36the people who knew and loved them
2320. 1:48:39and that was certainly the case with
  2321. 1:48:41Maureen Hedge
2322. 1:48:43we're in a neighborhood of Park City
  2323. 1:48:48where Dennis Rader lived
  2324. 1:48:51on Independence Street
2325. 1:48:54and just down the street was a neighbor
2326. 1:48:59named Marine head she was a 53 year old
  2327. 1:49:01woman
2328. 1:49:03who lived alone had no dog
2329. 1:49:06seemed to have a male friend who came in
  2330. 1:49:08and out but didn't live there
2331. 1:49:11if I walk by one of the blocks or
  2332. 1:49:13something like that
2333. 1:49:15but I just wave at her say hi
2334. 1:49:18she's usually out in the front yard
  2335. 1:49:19changing her flowers
2336. 1:49:25and then one day when he was looking at
2337. 1:49:28his window and he saw her out there
2338. 1:49:30he imagined his hands around her throat
2339. 1:49:35at that point Marine hedge became a
  2340. 1:49:38project
2341. 1:49:40they had been dormant for seven years
  2342. 1:49:43he hadn't done anything and suddenly
2343. 1:49:46decides not only does he need to kill
  2344. 1:49:49her but he's going to kill a neighbor
2345. 1:49:57Raider was a cub scout leader and he
2346. 1:50:01used that to stalk victims and to kill
2347. 1:50:04victims when the opportunity would arise
2348. 1:50:07he planned a night out with his Cub
2349. 1:50:09Scouts once he got them vetted down he
2350. 1:50:12would drive to Park City
2351. 1:50:15he gets to Marie and hedge's house cuts
  2352. 1:50:18the phone wire
  2353. 1:50:20her car's in the driveway
2354. 1:50:22but the house is dark
  2355. 1:50:25he broke in
  2356. 1:50:27and realizes she's not home apparently
  2357. 1:50:30she's out on a date
2358. 1:50:31but then he hears a car door
2359. 1:50:35he went into her closet in her bedroom
2360. 1:50:38and heard the two of them come in
  2361. 1:50:43that was a long wait I had to wait a
2362. 1:50:45long time in the closet
2363. 1:50:56that's when Raider made his move
2364. 1:50:59but what was interesting in this is he
2365. 1:51:03was going to change his his signature
2366. 1:51:05behaviors aside from cutting the phone
2367. 1:51:07line he was going to take her body out
2368. 1:51:12his plan then was to take her to the
2369. 1:51:15church he had keys to the church as a
2370. 1:51:17member of the governing body of that
  2371. 1:51:20church
2372. 1:51:21took her to the basement staged her in
2373. 1:51:23various positions took photographs with
2374. 1:51:25his Polaroid and then disposed of the
  2375. 1:51:28body
  2376. 1:51:33between his crimes
2377. 1:51:35he's getting more emboldened and then
2378. 1:51:37being more emboldened and more
  2379. 1:51:40narcissistic he simultaneously getting
2380. 1:51:43more Reckless sloppy and disorganized
2381. 1:51:49my name is David zickel I was a police
2382. 1:51:51officer for the city of Park City
  2383. 1:51:54April 28 1985 I was working the day
2384. 1:51:59shift early in the morning I got a call
2385. 1:52:01to check the welfare of a marine hedge
2386. 1:52:04she had reported for work and that was
  2387. 1:52:06very unusual for her
2388. 1:52:09when Maureen wasn't found in her house
2389. 1:52:12we made a missing person report on her
2390. 1:52:15and her car was found a few days later
2391. 1:52:17at a bowling alley in Northeast Wichita
2392. 1:52:20and everybody kind of figured that
2393. 1:52:23something fowl had probably occurred
2394. 1:52:26the body was discovered here at 53rd
2395. 1:52:28Street North just east of Webb Road a
2396. 1:52:31bit West of the area that police had
2397. 1:52:33been searching all weekend for some clue
  2398. 1:52:35to The Disappearance of 53-year-old
  2399. 1:52:37marine Hedge
2400. 1:52:39there wasn't any suspects right away so
2401. 1:52:41when her phone line was cut we thought
2402. 1:52:44that was very suspicious but we didn't
2403. 1:52:47know for sure it was BTK or a copycat
2404. 1:52:50but we did have that in the back of our
2405. 1:52:51head that you know BTK had never been
2406. 1:52:54captured and this could be something but
2407. 1:52:57she wasn't left in the house she was
  2408. 1:53:00removed from it
2409. 1:53:02you think you could participate in
  2410. 1:53:05church activities
2411. 1:53:06while at the same time harming other
  2412. 1:53:09people
2413. 1:53:12didn't it seem to violate what you
  2414. 1:53:14believed
2415. 1:53:16I don't people say wow what you did with
2416. 1:53:19Mrs fish in the church you know the
2417. 1:53:22house of God doing something like that
  2418. 1:53:23terrible
  2419. 1:53:26but I haven't had any well I guess you
2420. 1:53:28would call real bondage type pictures of
  2421. 1:53:31a female
2422. 1:53:32you can argue all kinds of things about
2423. 1:53:34what's going on in his head but
2424. 1:53:37practicality on the president of the
2425. 1:53:39church I've got keys to get in I know
2426. 1:53:42when people are there this is a pretty
2427. 1:53:44safe place where I'm not going to be
2428. 1:53:45seen or interrupted doing all of
2429. 1:53:48everything what I've got to do but when
2430. 1:53:50you first decided to use a room in the
2431. 1:53:54church to bring a body to dress to take
2432. 1:54:00pictures of did it seem weird like why
2433. 1:54:05would you even think of using the church
2434. 1:54:06no it was a way to what I wanted done
2435. 1:54:18after Marine Hedges murder BTK did not
2436. 1:54:22surface and claim responsibility for
  2437. 1:54:24that
2438. 1:54:25the reason he did not communicate
2439. 1:54:28anything to police or any media was she
  2440. 1:54:33was in his neighborhood
2441. 1:54:35so the last thing he wanted to do was
2442. 1:54:37have police focused on his very Street
2443. 1:54:42but time passed and again no one
2444. 1:54:45suspected the killer was living among
  2445. 1:54:47them
2446. 1:54:48so Raider began planning his next murder
2447. 1:54:52operator would drive through the
2448. 1:54:54scouting or trolling for potential
2449. 1:54:57victims and that's how he picked Vicki
  2450. 1:55:00wegely
2451. 1:55:01one day as he was driving by he saw her
2452. 1:55:05come out of the house and she drew his
  2453. 1:55:07interest
2454. 1:55:16opportunities that I had to really look
2455. 1:55:19for my next victim was around lunchtime
2456. 1:55:21and I would drive over there and eat and
  2457. 1:55:24then I'd watch a washer plates from my
  2458. 1:55:26car
2459. 1:55:28I used my rest of the telephone man I
2460. 1:55:31had the part hat on and the little
2461. 1:55:32symbol I stuck on it and some gear that
2462. 1:55:35looked like telephone gear you know in
  2463. 1:55:37my hands
2464. 1:55:39he then went to Vicki wegely's house
2465. 1:55:42talked his way in that he needed to go
  2466. 1:55:44look at her phone
2467. 1:55:46she was very very nervous and was
  2468. 1:55:49watching him like a hawk
2469. 1:55:52her baby was playing the floor in the
  2470. 1:55:55front room
2471. 1:55:56she said her husband was going to be
  2472. 1:55:58home at noon
2473. 1:56:00and at one point he he was fiddling with
2474. 1:56:03the phone like he was working on it
2475. 1:56:06and when she turned her head to check on
2476. 1:56:08the baby he pounced on her
  2477. 1:56:13husband was coming home
2478. 1:56:16mentioned it but I thought well she may
2479. 1:56:19be doing she may be lying on that that
  2480. 1:56:21was a big risk you're really in the
2481. 1:56:22middle of the day around noon time so
2482. 1:56:25that was a big risk but my focus was on
  2483. 1:56:28her
2484. 1:56:31when her husband came home and found the
2485. 1:56:33baby and not her he was initially upset
2486. 1:56:36you know that what what's Vicki doing
2487. 1:56:38you you know thought she'd gone to the
2488. 1:56:39store and left the baby there but then
2489. 1:56:41when he he walked back in the bedroom
2490. 1:56:42and saw that there was some comforters
2491. 1:56:45that were kind of disarrayed he said I
2492. 1:56:47knew that Vicky wouldn't leave the house
2493. 1:56:48like that so he searched a little
2494. 1:56:50further in and that's when he found his
2495. 1:56:52wife tucked under the bed kind of
2496. 1:56:54secreted under the bed by the time
2497. 1:56:56police got to Vicki wegerly's House on
2498. 1:56:58West 13th her heart had already stopped
2499. 1:57:00beating she died within 15 minutes at
2500. 1:57:02Riverside Hospital her husband Bill
  2501. 1:57:04supposedly found Vicki with a noose
  2502. 1:57:06around her neck foreign
2503. 1:57:09ERS targeted someone the callousness
  2504. 1:57:13just sets in
2505. 1:57:16in anything that that particular victim
2506. 1:57:19is associated with goes along with it
2507. 1:57:23it's really striking to me that Raider
2508. 1:57:25as a family man has absolutely no
2509. 1:57:29concern about young children in a home
  2510. 1:57:31where he has targeted a victim
2511. 1:57:35at that time the police accused her
2512. 1:57:37husband and just couldn't prove that it
2513. 1:57:40was him they really thought that was him
2514. 1:57:42after they interviewed him that went
  2515. 1:57:44unsolved
2516. 1:57:46never in a million years did people
2517. 1:57:50tie it to BTK had any idea police were
2518. 1:57:54investigating it as a random act and it
2519. 1:57:59just basically never was solved
  2520. 1:58:04think about
2521. 1:58:05what it would be like for you if
2522. 1:58:08somebody entered your home and did
2523. 1:58:11something like that to your wife
2524. 1:58:16doing everything possible protect my my
2525. 1:58:18wife or my kid but I mean what if you
2526. 1:58:20found her dead murdered what would that
2527. 1:58:23have been like for you
2528. 1:58:25oh that would have been very upsetting
2529. 1:58:27it's like Revenge has come back on me
2530. 1:58:31when I asked him what would happen if he
2531. 1:58:33came home and found someone had murdered
2532. 1:58:35his wife there's no sense of outrage or
2533. 1:58:39or horror that somebody could have done
  2534. 1:58:42this to his family it's it's more
  2535. 1:58:46resignation oh well Karma
2536. 1:58:50instead of empathizing with his loved
2537. 1:58:52ones suffering he is only able to see
2538. 1:58:55how their possible demise would affect
  2539. 1:58:57him
2540. 1:58:59greater was in his mid-40s by this time
2541. 1:59:02he had accomplished nine murders without
2542. 1:59:05anyone suspecting him at all well I was
  2543. 1:59:09building I guess work
2544. 1:59:19this is a bridge near Sedgwick which is
  2545. 1:59:24north of Park City
2546. 1:59:25and underneath here is where the 10th
2547. 1:59:29victim of Dennis Rader was found in
  2548. 1:59:321991.
2549. 1:59:35she had been here approximately 10 days
  2550. 1:59:38before
2551. 1:59:40someone from one of the Farms came
  2552. 1:59:42across the body
  2553. 1:59:46mom's name was Dolores
  2554. 1:59:48but people called her d
2555. 1:59:51she was such a loving giving person and
2556. 1:59:56that's how I want people to remember her
2557. 1:59:58she's that star that shines a little
2558. 2:00:01extra bright because of what she was in
2559. 2:00:04this earth and what she endured to leave
  2560. 2:00:07this earth and I think that's really
  2561. 2:00:09important
2562. 2:00:12Dolores Davis was the last victim of
2563. 2:00:14Dennis Rader she became a project as he
2564. 2:00:17called him he was out in that area saw
2565. 2:00:20her out in the yard thought it would be
2566. 2:00:22a pretty easy to to get to her as a
  2567. 2:00:24victim
  2568. 2:00:26there was a Boy Scout a winter campout
2569. 2:00:30for two nights so he had various ways he
2570. 2:00:33could say where he was going to be so
  2571. 2:00:35alibi
  2572. 2:00:37she had a date that evening a dinner
2573. 2:00:40date with her friend who she'd been
2574. 2:00:43seeing they went back to her place early
  2575. 2:00:46evening he went home
  2576. 2:00:49as far as I know
2577. 2:00:51she went to bed under normal
  2578. 2:00:54circumstances at about 10 o'clock
2579. 2:00:57and somewhere before midnight he made
  2580. 2:01:03his move
  2581. 2:01:06he just took a cinder block
2582. 2:01:09and threw it through the patio glass
2583. 2:01:16at the back door and I thought myself
2584. 2:01:18what if he stepped out of that door with
  2585. 2:01:20a shotgun
2586. 2:01:22he said I'm on the run from the cops I
2587. 2:01:26just need your car and some money I'm
2588. 2:01:29going to tie you up to give me a head
2589. 2:01:30start so you know I get away from here
2590. 2:01:32before you call any authorities and so
2591. 2:01:35he took her to the bedroom
  2592. 2:01:37tied her up
2593. 2:01:38he leaned over and whispered and Ranier
  2594. 2:01:40I'm BTK I'm a bad dude
2595. 2:01:43a lot of people think it's inflicting
  2596. 2:01:45the pain they enjoy but that's just a
2597. 2:01:47tool the worry the fear the suffering
2598. 2:01:50that's what he really enjoyed
2599. 2:01:54I'm sure then she knew she was doomed
2600. 2:01:57and I shudder to think about it killed
2601. 2:02:02her with her own pantyhose
2602. 2:02:05in her own bedroom so just
  2603. 2:02:08the terror
  2604. 2:02:10is palpable
2605. 2:02:13he took her body to a location
2606. 2:02:17Country Road under a bridge and there he
2607. 2:02:20posed her in different positions took
  2608. 2:02:23some pictures
2609. 2:02:26after Raider hid Dolores Davis's body he
2610. 2:02:30went back to the Scout camp and snuck
  2611. 2:02:32back in
2612. 2:02:34a missing person's report had been filed
2613. 2:02:37for Dolores Davis by her boyfriend the
  2614. 2:02:39morning after she disappeared
2615. 2:02:42when police saw her broken window and
2616. 2:02:45that a jewelry box was missing they put
  2617. 2:02:47out an all-points bulletin searching for
  2618. 2:02:50a perpetrator
2619. 2:02:53sneaks out of the boy scout camp again
2620. 2:02:55the next night to go back to the body
2621. 2:02:59is still bound with the pantyhose and
2622. 2:03:01whatnot but nobody has discovered it yet
2623. 2:03:05on the way back to camp this time Raider
2624. 2:03:08goes to a rest area to change his
2625. 2:03:10clothes back into his Boy Scout leader
  2626. 2:03:13close
  2627. 2:03:14and when he's in the stall a trooper
  2628. 2:03:18comes in
  2629. 2:03:19Trooper says a crime has happened we're
2630. 2:03:21looking for people who just look out of
2631. 2:03:22place Raider was worried because at this
2632. 2:03:25point he had the jewelry box in the car
2633. 2:03:27and he knew if they asked to look in the
2634. 2:03:30trunk of the car they would see those
2635. 2:03:32items that were clearly not his and were
2636. 2:03:36it would have then been related back to
  2637. 2:03:38Dolores Davis
2638. 2:03:40I did it all over poor good Lord my wife
2639. 2:03:44my kids and my family's friends are
2640. 2:03:46gonna know all about it here I am caught
2641. 2:03:48like a rat and a trap so Raider talks
2642. 2:03:52about the boy scout camp nearby I'm just
2643. 2:03:55here on my way back to it Trooper says
  2644. 2:03:59okay
2645. 2:03:59you're not the kind of person we're
  2646. 2:04:01looking for
2647. 2:04:02and Raiders goes back to the Boy Scout
2648. 2:04:04camp and is not a suspect in this crime
2649. 2:04:08Raider made him feel like well an
2650. 2:04:11ordinary guy like this who volunteers
2651. 2:04:13for the Boy Scouts couldn't possibly be
  2652. 2:04:15the person we're looking for
2653. 2:04:18if your job was to question everybody
2654. 2:04:21and look in their cars then you do that
2655. 2:04:24even with somebody who volunteers for
  2656. 2:04:27the Boy Scouts
2657. 2:04:30if I were using this case to inform law
2658. 2:04:33enforcement I would show how an officer
2659. 2:04:36in the case actually made an error
2660. 2:04:40that let Raider go free
2661. 2:04:43because he adhered to the stereotypes
2662. 2:04:49the enormity of what I was afraid had
  2663. 2:04:53happened had happened
2664. 2:04:55part of the frustration the pain
2665. 2:04:59was the fact that we knew so little we
2666. 2:05:03had no Witnesses the car was Queen of
2667. 2:05:06Prince there was nothing in the house
2668. 2:05:09they had nothing to go on really
2669. 2:05:13the police did consider that certainly
  2670. 2:05:16hedge and Davis were
2671. 2:05:18part of BTK I think they even thought
  2672. 2:05:21legally might be
2673. 2:05:22but there were a lot of differences why
2674. 2:05:25would there be so much time between
  2675. 2:05:26number nine and number 10.
2676. 2:05:29it didn't make any sense at the time
2677. 2:05:34what we didn't know is BTK was going to
2678. 2:05:38the store with us he was eating popcorn
2679. 2:05:40at the movies with us
2680. 2:05:42he was going to church with us
2681. 2:05:44he was the guy next door
  2682. 2:05:49I can't tell you
  2683. 2:05:51when BTK reappeared
  2684. 2:05:54how shocked everybody was
2685. 2:06:07when I was writing the book about Dennis
2686. 2:06:09Rader the serial killer known as BTK one
2687. 2:06:13of the things he wanted me to have to
2688. 2:06:15use to organize it was his project list
2689. 2:06:20comprised of various people he had
  2690. 2:06:22identified as potential victims
2691. 2:06:26and that meant being very clear about
2692. 2:06:29when he attempted to kidnap somebody
2693. 2:06:32when he stalked somebody and made
  2694. 2:06:34contact
2695. 2:06:36there were a number of young women
2696. 2:06:38during that time who he had picked out
2697. 2:06:41who were on his list who he was going to
  2698. 2:06:45murder
  2699. 2:06:55happen
2700. 2:06:57the list had the project name the years
  2701. 2:07:01the dates the location
2702. 2:07:04all the details he could think of and
2703. 2:07:06fit onto this little chart
2704. 2:07:08so it gives a lot of sense of his
  2705. 2:07:11personality
2706. 2:07:12he liked things organized clear he liked
2707. 2:07:16to follow rules because he wanted other
2708. 2:07:18people to follow rules but that way he
2709. 2:07:21could then break the rules but come back
  2710. 2:07:24into a safe organized world
2711. 2:07:28project 16 on the project list was known
  2712. 2:07:32as project blackout
2713. 2:07:35my name is Cheryl Gilmore Sarkozy and
  2714. 2:07:39I'm a Survivor of BTK
2715. 2:07:41and his name for me was Project blackout
  2716. 2:07:46[Music]
2717. 2:07:58after the Dolores Davis murder Raider
2718. 2:08:01slips back into a period of dormancy he
2719. 2:08:04continues to look for projects but he
  2720. 2:08:06doesn't act out
2721. 2:08:08what were you doing in those years when
  2722. 2:08:10nothing was really happening
  2723. 2:08:19I worked at church
2724. 2:08:23okay but if I'm real music then I would
  2725. 2:08:27go out on a prowling
2726. 2:08:28and look for my next victim
  2727. 2:08:31they were basically projects
2728. 2:08:34did you feel like you were in control of
  2729. 2:08:36your urges then
2730. 2:08:44excitement is able to do to hunt
2731. 2:08:48the planning for any sexually compelled
2732. 2:08:52serial killer is definitely part of the
  2733. 2:08:55pleasure
2734. 2:08:56and Dennis Rader is quite the organizer
2735. 2:09:01in the project list marked project
  2736. 2:09:03blackout
2737. 2:09:05blackout refers to a bar near the campus
2738. 2:09:08of Wichita State University where Raider
  2739. 2:09:11would often go have a beer
2740. 2:09:14Raider writes girl at bar and indicates
  2741. 2:09:18the year 1977.
  2742. 2:09:22foreign
  2743. 2:09:31one afternoon a girlfriend and I decided
2744. 2:09:34to go to the blackout bar
2745. 2:09:37and I started talking to this man
2746. 2:09:40and he told me that he was studying at
2747. 2:09:43the University it had to do with like
  2748. 2:09:45police work and love
2749. 2:09:47the bar got raided and everybody was
2750. 2:09:51told to leave and so
2751. 2:09:54he was walking with me through the
  2752. 2:09:56parking lot
2753. 2:09:58I said so tell me do you know if it's
2754. 2:10:01against the law in Kansas to commit
  2755. 2:10:03suicide
2756. 2:10:04and he said it is against the law and I
  2757. 2:10:07said well that's a shame because I think
2758. 2:10:09that anybody that wants to commit
2759. 2:10:11suicide should have that right and he
2760. 2:10:14reached over and took my arm
2761. 2:10:17and he squeezed it and he said oh please
  2762. 2:10:19don't say that
  2763. 2:10:21and I thought what a kind man
2764. 2:10:25by then I was at my car and I got in the
  2765. 2:10:28car and left
  2766. 2:10:30[Music]
2767. 2:10:31it was really sort of a nondescript type
  2768. 2:10:34of character he wasn't someone that I
2769. 2:10:37gave a second thought to after that
2770. 2:10:40but it turned out that that that was
  2771. 2:10:43Dennis Rader
  2772. 2:10:44[Music]
  2773. 2:10:49that particular day
2774. 2:10:51he had followed me home
2775. 2:10:54and then he started stalking me
  2776. 2:10:57[Music]
  2777. 2:10:59so I have a report from a woman named
2778. 2:11:03Cheryl she said she talked with you at
  2779. 2:11:06the blackout Lounge
2780. 2:11:08now you spill that Lounge what I was
2781. 2:11:10trying to do was get more notches on my
  2782. 2:11:12gun at that time
2783. 2:11:15so I was in the mood I've had everything
2784. 2:11:17set had my hip hip head rolled tape and
2785. 2:11:21I had two guns a couple of nice I was
  2786. 2:11:23gonna do something
2787. 2:11:25I was at the heights of my uh eruption
  2788. 2:11:30Cheryl Gilmore sarkozy's neighbor was
  2789. 2:11:33Dennis Raider's sixth murder victim
2790. 2:11:36surely buy it who killed on March 17
  2791. 2:11:391977.
  2792. 2:11:51thank you
2793. 2:11:53I didn't know exactly who lived in that
2794. 2:11:55house because I followed her son home
  2795. 2:11:57that time
2796. 2:12:00the day Shirley Bayan was murdered
  2797. 2:12:03I had a four-year-old son and he had
2798. 2:12:07come to work with me that afternoon
2799. 2:12:10when he and I got home the whole
  2800. 2:12:14neighborhood
2801. 2:12:15was filled with police cars
2802. 2:12:18there was a knock on my door
2803. 2:12:21and this policeman came in and he said
2804. 2:12:24the woman a few doors down has been
  2805. 2:12:27murdered
2806. 2:12:29and her little boy has said he saw the
2807. 2:12:33man knock on your door
2808. 2:12:36so we feel that you might have been the
  2809. 2:12:39intended victim
2810. 2:12:43I can't imagine why anybody would want
  2811. 2:12:45to kill me
2812. 2:12:47it was a horrifying time in my life
2813. 2:12:51and I nailed all my Windows shut
  2814. 2:12:55I couldn't sleep for months
2815. 2:12:59had I been home that day it would have
  2816. 2:13:02been me
  2817. 2:13:04instead of Shirley vienne
2818. 2:13:07it certainly was possible that Raider
2819. 2:13:10would have had a number of other victims
2820. 2:13:13had things gone a little bit differently
2821. 2:13:15had someone come home when he expected
2822. 2:13:18them to had he figured out a routine of
2823. 2:13:21somebody in the right way
2824. 2:13:27from the project list Raiders shared
2825. 2:13:29with me we can see that he continued
2826. 2:13:31stalking a number of people during the
  2827. 2:13:33period of 1991 to 2005 but he just
  2828. 2:13:38didn't succeed
2829. 2:13:40at the same time Raider worked as a Park
  2830. 2:13:43City compliance officer
  2831. 2:13:45[Music]
2832. 2:13:47a job that once again gave him cover to
2833. 2:13:49stock and troll in his own backyard the
2834. 2:13:52reporting parties of where the Sheep
  2835. 2:13:54were killed
2836. 2:13:55a compliance officer this is like a law
2837. 2:13:58enforcement equivalent which is your
2838. 2:14:00grass is overgrown your dog is off the
2839. 2:14:02leash your house needs painting you can
2840. 2:14:04kind of Lord it over people and actually
2841. 2:14:06could carry a gun as part of the job
2842. 2:14:09did you like being a compliance officer
2843. 2:14:18serial killers who aspired to become
2844. 2:14:21cops typically had delusions of power
2845. 2:14:26as I recall several citizens called and
2846. 2:14:28made complaints about his being strict
2847. 2:14:31or rude confrontational and that type of
  2848. 2:14:34behavior
  2849. 2:14:36as a compliance officer he didn't like
2850. 2:14:39it if somebody did something he thought
2851. 2:14:41they shouldn't so in his world it was
2852. 2:14:43okay for him to break the rules but he
2853. 2:14:46needed that safety of that regimented
2854. 2:14:49world so everyone else around him had to
  2855. 2:14:52stay within their Lane
  2856. 2:14:56January 2004 marked the 30th anniversary
  2857. 2:15:00of Dennis Raider's first murders the
  2858. 2:15:02Otero family
2859. 2:15:04it was 25 years since his last
2860. 2:15:06correspondence with police or the media
  2861. 2:15:09and had been 13 years since he'd killed
2862. 2:15:12his last victim Dolores Davis although
2863. 2:15:14no one had yet linked BTK to her murder
2864. 2:15:19when you have anniversaries news
2865. 2:15:21departments do stories on it
2866. 2:15:23so it was on the front page that a guy
2867. 2:15:26was writing a book about BTK well
2868. 2:15:30BTK did not like that
  2869. 2:15:33he is so arrogant
2870. 2:15:37that he wanted to tell his story
2871. 2:15:50was made to die in prison or moved out
  2872. 2:15:52of the area
2873. 2:15:54or basically just passed away
2874. 2:15:56when Dennis Rader learned that an
  2875. 2:15:59attorney wanted to write a book
2876. 2:16:02about then cell BTK crimes
2877. 2:16:06and he was going to cover seven victims
2878. 2:16:09and Raider knew there were more so he
2879. 2:16:12didn't want a book written that would be
2880. 2:16:14his legacy that would really not get the
  2881. 2:16:18story right
2882. 2:16:20my Administrative Assistant goes through
2883. 2:16:22the mail every day and she had gotten a
2884. 2:16:26letter that had a photocopy of what
2885. 2:16:28appeared to be an old Polaroid
  2886. 2:16:31it looked like a woman's body on the
  2887. 2:16:34floor
  2888. 2:16:37and a copy of a woman's driver's license
  2889. 2:16:40the driver's license Was Vicki
  2890. 2:16:42wegerley's
2891. 2:16:44her murder had never been tied to BTK
2892. 2:16:48investigators believe the letter is from
2893. 2:16:50BTK because it has information about a
  2894. 2:16:53two decade-old homicide linked to BTK
2895. 2:16:55that only the killer would know BTK
2896. 2:16:58claims in the letter that Vicki wegely
  2897. 2:17:00was his eighth victim
2898. 2:17:03no photographs had been taken of the
2899. 2:17:05victim at the scene by the police by
2900. 2:17:07anybody because Vicki Waverly had been
2901. 2:17:09removed from the scene by an ambulance
  2902. 2:17:11crew
2903. 2:17:12so if there were any doubts in anybody's
2904. 2:17:15mind that this guy was the real thing it
  2905. 2:17:19stopped right there
2906. 2:17:22he generated the fears of the citizenry
  2907. 2:17:25there in Wichita
2908. 2:17:27in your gut you felt like oh my God
2909. 2:17:30whoever he is and wherever he lives
2910. 2:17:33we got to stop this
2911. 2:17:40I let it received by cake tv was turned
2912. 2:17:42over to us last Wednesday and we are
2913. 2:17:45treated as a possibly being sent by BTK
  2914. 2:17:49in 2004 after the re-emergence of BTK
2915. 2:17:54the Wichita Police Department under the
2916. 2:17:57leadership of Kenny Landwehr who was the
2917. 2:17:59homicide Lieutenant at that time formed
2918. 2:18:02a task force made up of Wichita police
2919. 2:18:04detectives FBI agents kbi agents I mean
2920. 2:18:09I said we're going to get this guy I
2921. 2:18:11don't care what it takes
2922. 2:18:14BTK is back because he wants to see his
2923. 2:18:18name in the paper he wants to see him
2924. 2:18:21talked about on the television station
  2925. 2:18:23BTK is communicating again
2926. 2:18:26etk is back BTK BTK this is one of the
  2927. 2:18:29most challenging cases that
2928. 2:18:32I've ever been involved with and I find
2929. 2:18:35that the individual that is doing this
2930. 2:18:37would be very interesting to talk to
2931. 2:18:39early on in the investigation a couple
2932. 2:18:42of profilers from the FBI were brought
  2933. 2:18:44in and
2934. 2:18:46one of the greatest guidances that they
2935. 2:18:49provided was the creation of the
2936. 2:18:54communications that Kenny Landwehr would
2937. 2:18:57release in these various media events
2938. 2:19:01it all looked fairly natural the way
2939. 2:19:03Kenny delivered it but these were
2940. 2:19:05scripted for the intent and sole purpose
  2941. 2:19:08of keeping BTK communicating
2942. 2:19:12if we could keep him communicating
2943. 2:19:15that was the key to catching him
2944. 2:19:17eventually he would slip up
2945. 2:19:20when Ken landwer did a press conference
2946. 2:19:22about you what was that like for you
2947. 2:19:25well that was pretty high
2948. 2:19:30still exist in our community so be
  2949. 2:19:33careful
2950. 2:19:34I was having a field day with Captain
  2951. 2:19:37Mouse not having fun
2952. 2:19:40the strategy that Ken Landwehr adopted
2953. 2:19:43was to personalize this to address
2954. 2:19:46whoever BTK was the hope was that that
2955. 2:19:51would make the killer feel as if they
2956. 2:19:54were buddies which is exactly what did
  2957. 2:19:57happen
2958. 2:19:58Raider really enjoyed it so what started
2959. 2:20:01as a an attempt to control his story
2960. 2:20:04turned into this game with law
2961. 2:20:07enforcement that he thought they were
2962. 2:20:10having as much fun as he was he has
2963. 2:20:12communicated with us since the 70s and
  2964. 2:20:14it continues today
2965. 2:20:17shortly after that cake tv
  2966. 2:20:20a letter
2967. 2:20:21that had one page the BTK Story chapter
  2968. 2:20:261 chapter 2 chapter 3 chapter 4 when all
  2969. 2:20:31through the chapters
2970. 2:20:33He suggests chapter names in talking
2971. 2:20:37about BTK what killer does that
2972. 2:20:41he wanted to give us a guide on how we
  2973. 2:20:43cover him basically
2974. 2:20:46but the scariest thing was the very last
  2975. 2:20:48chapter was just a question
2976. 2:20:51will there be more taunting police and
2977. 2:20:56Wichita who was going to be the next
  2978. 2:20:58victim
2979. 2:20:59scared us all to death
2980. 2:21:04why did you decide to send the BTK story
2981. 2:21:07to the TV station I wanted the police or
2982. 2:21:11the general population know that yeah
2983. 2:21:13there might be some more you know I mean
2984. 2:21:15it's not right off the sunset there
  2985. 2:21:17might be some more
2986. 2:21:19we would get sent information obviously
2987. 2:21:22we'd read it we'd do a story about it
2988. 2:21:24but immediately hand it over to the
2989. 2:21:25police department hoping that maybe this
2990. 2:21:28will lead to his capture
  2991. 2:21:30in May of 2004 Dennis Raiders sent a
2992. 2:21:34word puzzle comprised of random letters
2993. 2:21:37and numbers to cake tv
2994. 2:21:41it was obviously a word search and the
2995. 2:21:44idea was that in this puzzle there might
2996. 2:21:47be Clues to his identity
2997. 2:21:50our responsibility was to find the words
2998. 2:21:53in the word puzzle one was victim
2999. 2:21:57one was the service man
  3000. 2:22:00one was ruse
3001. 2:22:03so we were in The Newsroom
3002. 2:22:05looking at this puzzle going oh my gosh
3003. 2:22:09hello Susan so nice meeting you Dr
3004. 2:22:12ramsland and thank you so much for
3005. 2:22:15shedding light on these puzzles well he
3006. 2:22:19loved codes that was his big thing he
3007. 2:22:21loved codes and communicating through
3008. 2:22:23code with just the idea of now you have
3009. 2:22:25to figure me out you have to be thinking
  3010. 2:22:26of me
3011. 2:22:27why he chose these words why some are
  3012. 2:22:30backwards some are forwards
3013. 2:22:32was this number which actually should
3014. 2:22:34have that two zero to it because that's
  3015. 2:22:37his address
  3016. 2:22:38oh wait a minute where's his address six
  3017. 2:22:42two two zero
3018. 2:22:44if you saw that in O you wouldn't know
3019. 2:22:47that's a zero exactly first of all we
3020. 2:22:50didn't know at the time right obviously
3021. 2:22:52that the 622 and then the zero will do
3022. 2:22:55that was his address right here it was
3023. 2:22:58here all the time and then he puts
  3024. 2:23:00address right down there
3025. 2:23:02but that's the cat and mouse nature of
3026. 2:23:05it the fun of it is he's going to take
3027. 2:23:07some risk in order to have some Delight
3028. 2:23:10over how confusing this is going to be
3029. 2:23:12and then he'll see that you won't get it
  3030. 2:23:14so he'll feel Superior
  3031. 2:23:16which
3032. 2:23:18I'm sure he did he sent cake tv most of
3033. 2:23:24the clues and the correspondence
3034. 2:23:26why do you think he sent it to cake tv
3035. 2:23:29he knew he was going to get publicity if
  3036. 2:23:32he sent this to
3037. 2:23:33cake and he loved the station because he
3038. 2:23:36watched it as a kid he loved you
  3039. 2:23:39particularly I remember
3040. 2:23:42responding to one correspondence in
  3041. 2:23:45particular where he said I hope Susan's
  3042. 2:23:49and Jeff's cold gets better
3043. 2:23:51two nights before I had just sat on the
3044. 2:23:53air Jeff and I have a cold Jay can you
3045. 2:23:56give us some warm weather
3046. 2:23:58why do you think he did that Raider
3047. 2:24:01wanted you to know he was watching you
3048. 2:24:03he was aware of you alert you and he
3049. 2:24:05wants you to feel his eyes on you
  3050. 2:24:09that's so frightening definitely
3051. 2:24:13I was wondering because you were so
3052. 2:24:16attuned to Media at that time whether
  3053. 2:24:19you ever considered a media person as a
  3054. 2:24:23project
  3055. 2:24:24[Music]
3056. 2:24:37ing them to get things done and that was
  3057. 2:24:40the main purpose
3058. 2:24:42he's having fun because he is watching
3059. 2:24:46this hit the news be talked about on TV
3060. 2:24:51but he forgets you are a serial killer
3061. 2:24:55this cat and mouse game is about real
3062. 2:24:58people that you killed you're acting as
3063. 2:25:00if the police are playing a game with
  3064. 2:25:03you and everybody's having a good time
3065. 2:25:05at it and that is not what's happening
3066. 2:25:10we were all concerned because we didn't
3067. 2:25:12know what was going to happen
3068. 2:25:15we didn't know if all of a sudden in the
3069. 2:25:16middle of the night the BTK was going to
3070. 2:25:19go show up in our bedroom
  3071. 2:25:26throughout 2004 until the beginning of
  3072. 2:25:282005.
3073. 2:25:30Dennis Raiders sent correspondence and
3074. 2:25:32items of evidence from his crimes to the
  3075. 2:25:34media and police
3076. 2:25:36he enjoyed the publicity and he wanted
3077. 2:25:38to tell his story in his own way
3078. 2:25:42cake received another message from BTK
3079. 2:25:46about a cereal box that he had deposited
  3080. 2:25:49at a home improvement store
3081. 2:25:51that wasn't that far from Cake TV
  3082. 2:25:53[Music]
3083. 2:25:55we immediately detect these to Home
  3084. 2:25:57Depot and they looked didn't see
3085. 2:25:58anything talked to all the employees
  3086. 2:26:00about any packages they'd found
  3087. 2:26:03investigators posted a message in the
3088. 2:26:05employee lounges asking if anyone saw
3089. 2:26:08anything suspicious a guy came back from
  3090. 2:26:10vacation and said
3091. 2:26:12well yeah I found this cereal box in the
3092. 2:26:14back of my truck and it said BTK bomb
3093. 2:26:19thought somebody was just messing with
3094. 2:26:21him so he said I just threw it in my
  3095. 2:26:23burn barrel when I got home
3096. 2:26:25turns out that was the communication
3097. 2:26:27that Raider was referring to so when we
3098. 2:26:30got the surveillance of the parking lot
3099. 2:26:32that was our actual first sighting of
3100. 2:26:34what we believe was BTK delivering that
  3101. 2:26:37package
3102. 2:26:38the video was blurry and he's far from
  3103. 2:26:42the camera so police couldn't clearly
3104. 2:26:44see what he looked like
3105. 2:26:45however they did see that he was driving
3106. 2:26:48a dark colored Jeep Cherokee
3107. 2:26:52what about driving into the Home Depot
  3108. 2:26:55parking lot and you think they'd have a
  3109. 2:26:57surveillance camera
  3110. 2:26:59well before I get my yesterday where I
  3111. 2:27:02put that stuff
3112. 2:27:04in the back the camera's mounted on
3113. 2:27:07them if there was any cameras
  3114. 2:27:08in distance
3115. 2:27:11to be very distinguishing mainly just a
  3116. 2:27:13person
3117. 2:27:15demonstrators gotten away with this for
  3118. 2:27:1830 years so there's a narcissism
3119. 2:27:21we actually call this narcissistic
  3120. 2:27:23immunity
3121. 2:27:25the immunity part is the the sense that
3122. 2:27:28he's so special that no one can touch
  3123. 2:27:31him
3124. 2:27:32but the narcissistic immunity is kind of
3125. 2:27:36well earned because I'm one of the few
  3126. 2:27:39serial killers that they haven't
3127. 2:27:41identified and never will in his mind
3128. 2:27:45be asked to communicate with law
  3129. 2:27:47enforcement directly
3130. 2:27:49he was trying to find a way to do that
3131. 2:27:51without giving himself away and so one
3132. 2:27:54of the things he suggested was to use a
  3133. 2:27:57floppy disk
3134. 2:27:59so at one point he sent a message
  3135. 2:28:01through the media saying can I
3136. 2:28:03communicate with you guys and can we use
3137. 2:28:05a floppy disk and you won't trace it and
3138. 2:28:09then he specified be honest
3139. 2:28:13if it was okay for ready to send the
3140. 2:28:15floppy disk without being traced he
3141. 2:28:17instructed the police to respond in code
3142. 2:28:19through an ad in the newspaper that said
3143. 2:28:22Rex it will be okay
3144. 2:28:26we thought it was so ironic that a
3145. 2:28:28freaking serial killer wants us to be
  3146. 2:28:29honest Lieutenant land we're decided in
3147. 2:28:31the FBI decided to go ahead and place
3148. 2:28:33the ad and see what happens
  3149. 2:28:37and I wasn't really too nervous about it
3150. 2:28:40I sell a lot of stuff through the mail
3151. 2:28:42and didn't have any feedback or any
  3152. 2:28:45feedback from it I guess I got
3153. 2:28:47confidence that they were sort of
3154. 2:28:49buddies or something or friends
3155. 2:28:51I kind of had a little bonding with land
  3156. 2:28:54where I think I kind of wandered with
3157. 2:28:55him this letter is from BTK and we
3158. 2:28:58thought they were wanting to play cat
3159. 2:28:59and mouse and we wish they were
3160. 2:29:02I thought they would be truthful
3161. 2:29:07Raider had this kind of idealism he had
3162. 2:29:10developed ever since he was a boy scout
3163. 2:29:12in his hope to become a police officer
3164. 2:29:14it had this kind of John Wayne thinking
3165. 2:29:17going on that you know they're upholding
3166. 2:29:20the loss of course they're not going to
  3167. 2:29:21lie to him
  3168. 2:29:23he answered
  3169. 2:29:25with the floppy disk
3170. 2:29:28the floppy was it just a test file on it
3171. 2:29:31or was there anything else on it
3172. 2:29:34I want to see if they would pick the
3173. 2:29:36monitor to get through okay is there
3174. 2:29:38anything beyond that this is a test
  3175. 2:29:42one of the I.T guys they're at the
  3176. 2:29:44Wichita Police Department
3177. 2:29:45loaded it into his computer
3178. 2:29:48he began pulling metadata files showing
3179. 2:29:52prior users of that disk
3180. 2:29:55immediately there was an indication that
3181. 2:29:57it had been used at Christ Lutheran
3182. 2:29:59Church up in Park City
3183. 2:30:01also the name Dennis appeared
3184. 2:30:04real quick check the president of that
3185. 2:30:07church was a guy named Dennis Raider
3186. 2:30:09that was a huge break that was one of
3187. 2:30:12those moments where you were just
3188. 2:30:14ecstatic we found an address in Park
3189. 2:30:17City and the race was on we all wanted
  3190. 2:30:20to get there
3191. 2:30:28as soon as they get the location where
  3192. 2:30:31Dennis Raider lives
3193. 2:30:33two of our detectives are on it
3194. 2:30:35and their sets the type of vehicle that
3195. 2:30:38was used by BTK to deliver the package
  3196. 2:30:40to Home Depot
3197. 2:30:43we wanted to just go knock doors down
3198. 2:30:45and go in and get him the lieutenant
3199. 2:30:47said we don't have his DNA to confirm
3200. 2:30:50that this is in fact
  3201. 2:30:53the BTK Killer
3202. 2:30:55we didn't arrest him at that point
3203. 2:30:57but he was placed under surveillance 24
3204. 2:30:597 because the last thing we wanted was
3205. 2:31:02for him to go out and try to victimize
3206. 2:31:04somebody after we had already identified
  3207. 2:31:06him
3208. 2:31:07with DNA testing forensic scientists can
3209. 2:31:10link criminals to crime scenes something
3210. 2:31:12that was unavailable to police when the
3211. 2:31:14BTK killer first terrorized Wichita
3212. 2:31:17Kansas in the mid 70s we had DNA from
3213. 2:31:20the Otero case and several other cases
3214. 2:31:22at this point you've got DNA analysis
3215. 2:31:26when BTK was leading all that evidence
3216. 2:31:28behind it was worthless it couldn't be
3217. 2:31:31analyzed back then but technology had
  3218. 2:31:33caught up
3219. 2:31:34were you worried about getting caught
3220. 2:31:36during this time that they might Trace
3221. 2:31:38something back to you yeah I was real
  3222. 2:31:40careful with my fingerprints I didn't
3223. 2:31:42even think about Miss Seaman
3224. 2:31:44they would have had to say that what 30
  3225. 2:31:46years
3226. 2:31:48but they also had the DNA sample from
  3227. 2:31:51Fox
3228. 2:31:52Hank wagonally she has some scraping
3229. 2:31:55strawberries or fingernail for me
  3230. 2:31:56because we did fight
3231. 2:31:59we began to mull over the idea how do we
3232. 2:32:02get his DNA and I happened to notice
3233. 2:32:05that his daughter had gone to Kansas
  3234. 2:32:07State University
3235. 2:32:09to get a court order and see if they've
3236. 2:32:10got any records sure enough they had
3237. 2:32:14records of her the records indicated
3238. 2:32:16that she had had a pap smear
3239. 2:32:18were able to take possession of that
3240. 2:32:21sample then we began to wait
  3241. 2:32:23for the analysis
  3242. 2:32:24[Music]
3243. 2:32:26I got a call that following Monday from
3244. 2:32:29The Examiner and she said that sample
  3245. 2:32:32you submitted
3246. 2:32:34that person is The Offspring of BTK
  3247. 2:32:38those were words that
3248. 2:32:40I had waited and hoped we would hear
  3249. 2:32:43eventually
3250. 2:32:45that's pretty definitive at that point
3251. 2:32:47it was very exciting I can only imagine
3252. 2:32:49for the Wichita guys who've been living
3253. 2:32:51this case every day and night for months
3254. 2:32:54and years that had to feel incredible
  3255. 2:32:57[Music]
3256. 2:32:58following the findings of our forensic
  3257. 2:33:01Laboratory
3258. 2:33:03number one on that priority was the
  3259. 2:33:05arrest of Dennis Rader
3260. 2:33:12there were a number of people in the
  3261. 2:33:14arrest team
3262. 2:33:16all of the task force plus a couple of
3263. 2:33:18uniformed officers we got word from the
3264. 2:33:21surveillance team that Dennis Rader BTK
3265. 2:33:23was on the move he was leaving his
3266. 2:33:25office and was likely headed home
3267. 2:33:28and so we were set up along his route
  3268. 2:33:30home
3269. 2:33:32decision was made that once he passes
3270. 2:33:34that uniform car will execute a traffic
  3271. 2:33:37stop on him
3272. 2:33:38when the uniform car stopped the Dennis
  3273. 2:33:41Raider's truck
3274. 2:33:43I had kind of beat as quickly as I could
3275. 2:33:46move because Dennis was coming out of
3276. 2:33:48his his door popped open fairly quickly
3277. 2:33:51but before he was able to get out I
3278. 2:33:54grabbed him and introduced him to the
  3279. 2:33:56concrete
3280. 2:33:58I was joined by several of my colleagues
  3281. 2:34:01who had
3282. 2:34:02every kind of gun in the world pointed
  3283. 2:34:04at him
3284. 2:34:05they got him handcuffed and we stood him
  3285. 2:34:07up
3286. 2:34:08when he turned to me or maybe a foot
3287. 2:34:11apart looking eye to eye
3288. 2:34:14looks at me and says would you mind
  3289. 2:34:17telling my wife I won't be home for
  3290. 2:34:18lunch
  3291. 2:34:19assume you know where I live
3292. 2:34:21just calm as calm can be
3293. 2:34:24we escorted back to the transport
  3294. 2:34:27vehicle
3295. 2:34:28he stuck his head in the door and he
3296. 2:34:30says well hello Mr manware so that was
  3297. 2:34:33always a immediate recognition and knew
3298. 2:34:35who Kenny was we scooted him in the car
3299. 2:34:37I jumped in next to him and we took off
  3300. 2:34:39for our interview location
3301. 2:34:48be in the middle of it
3302. 2:34:51and all kinds of stuff around
3303. 2:34:53anyway when I pulled off I go down that
3304. 2:34:55side street they're all lined up on the
3305. 2:34:58street and I thought what are they there
3306. 2:35:00for could it be me and then as soon as
3307. 2:35:02they appeared number you near my new
  3308. 2:35:04bottle
3309. 2:35:06to figure out how they knew I first
3310. 2:35:08thought that I made the connection when
3311. 2:35:10I dropped off my flopping in a mailbox
3312. 2:35:13and that looked really surely because I
3313. 2:35:16was no camera for anything right
3314. 2:35:18that's all I could get out of it and
3315. 2:35:20talk to her Mr lawnmower he said you
  3316. 2:35:23know why you're going downtown and I
  3317. 2:35:24said I've got an idea I think that
3318. 2:35:26kicked it off right there
3319. 2:35:28one of the things the FBI profiler that
3320. 2:35:31was interviewing him with Lieutenant
3321. 2:35:33land where made him say
3322. 2:35:36it was very specific he said tell us who
  3323. 2:35:39you are
3324. 2:35:41tell us who you are Dennis
3325. 2:35:44and eventually he would say on BTK
  3326. 2:35:48[Music]
3327. 2:35:55during the initial interview process
3328. 2:35:57Kenny lambler was in the room with
3329. 2:36:00Dennis Raider and laid the floppy disk
3330. 2:36:02on the table just to get his reaction
  3331. 2:36:11[Music]
  3332. 2:36:17sure
  3333. 2:36:23because I was trying to catch
3334. 2:36:26when you ask them to tell you if the
3335. 2:36:28flopping could be traced why did you
3336. 2:36:30trust them I like the Scout Oath always
3337. 2:36:33be truthful not just but trustful
3338. 2:36:34because they have declared war on me and
3339. 2:36:36Wars are not nice things
3340. 2:36:40I actually felt like they should have
3341. 2:36:42given me more respect I guess playing
3342. 2:36:44her cat and mouse game
  3343. 2:36:46to this day
3344. 2:36:48when Raider talks about that he still
3345. 2:36:51can't believe the cops lied to him he
3346. 2:36:54had got a degree in administration of
3347. 2:36:56justice and he would know that
3348. 2:36:59interrogators use lies all the time
3349. 2:37:01because they're trying to catch the bad
  3350. 2:37:02guys
  3351. 2:37:04so there's an odd
3352. 2:37:06childlike naivete at play here how could
3353. 2:37:10you have ever betrayed me like that
3354. 2:37:13Dennis even felt you know that since he
3355. 2:37:16wore badge and uniform that we were kind
3356. 2:37:19of in the same group that we were all in
  3357. 2:37:21the law enforcement world
3358. 2:37:24why did you finally confess during the
  3359. 2:37:27interrogation I talked about the DNA
3360. 2:37:36who has anything else to do to be honest
3361. 2:37:39cooperates in all the cases including
3362. 2:37:42the two to the County detectives head
3363. 2:37:44which are the Dolores Davis and Marine
3364. 2:37:47has you were disposed of in their
3365. 2:37:49territory their jurisdiction for decades
3366. 2:37:51it's been speculated BTK was responsible
3367. 2:37:54for more murders the 1991 murder of
3368. 2:37:58Dolores Davis and the 1985 murder of
  3369. 2:38:00marine Hedge
3370. 2:38:04when Dennis Rader was asked about the
3371. 2:38:06possibility of his family knowing that
3372. 2:38:08he was BTK he did not feel that they
  3373. 2:38:11ever had a clue
3374. 2:38:13on the day that Dennis Rader was
3375. 2:38:15arrested detective Kelly Otis and myself
3376. 2:38:18talked with his wife she was
  3377. 2:38:21of course in shock
  3378. 2:38:23in complete denial complete denial she's
  3379. 2:38:26then no no said you've made a horrible
3380. 2:38:28mistake she was not going to believe
  3381. 2:38:31this
3382. 2:38:32although she was putting on a brave face
3383. 2:38:34you know that she had to be her mind had
3384. 2:38:37to be just whirling and wondering and
3385. 2:38:39worrying and thinking back over their
  3386. 2:38:42marriage is this a possibility
3387. 2:38:46one time of a spelling just I think was
3388. 2:38:49writing something in the church or
3389. 2:38:50something and I was using her computer
3390. 2:38:53newsletters and back and forth and she
3391. 2:38:56says he spelled his life whoa
3392. 2:39:00I said yeah I've always been bad on
  3393. 2:39:01spelling
3394. 2:39:03he was manipulative enough to
3395. 2:39:08keep them in the dark as much as they
3396. 2:39:11sick to my stomach I was sick to my
  3397. 2:39:14heart
  3398. 2:39:16I don't know that the dentist that I
  3399. 2:39:19thought I knew exists
3400. 2:39:23I did interview his son he said we lived
3401. 2:39:25the perfect Leave it to Beaver life
3402. 2:39:28he said we went on vacations dad was
3403. 2:39:30involved in our Sports and our
  3404. 2:39:32activities
3405. 2:39:33the church we had a great time at home
  3406. 2:39:36said there's nothing
3407. 2:39:38but the day he was arrested is basically
3408. 2:39:41the day he will Mark forever as the day
  3409. 2:39:43he died
3410. 2:39:44he was like my best friend then I walked
3411. 2:39:47the dog with and I was very close to him
3412. 2:39:49and so when the FBI showed up on my door
  3413. 2:39:51you know February of 2005.
3414. 2:39:54like I told him they had the wrong guy I
3415. 2:39:56tried to Alibi him and um I was just
3416. 2:39:59fell into physical shock my whole world
3417. 2:40:01just fell out under me
3418. 2:40:04when you were arrested did it occur to
3419. 2:40:08you that people who looked up to you
3420. 2:40:10were how they were going to feel about
  3421. 2:40:12that
3422. 2:40:22I was very very depressed on that you
  3423. 2:40:25know that
  3424. 2:40:26well first of all I didn't think I was
3425. 2:40:28able to get arrested so you know you
3426. 2:40:29just keep going and keep going so you
3427. 2:40:31never think that would ever happen
3428. 2:40:33he never thought he'd be caught so he
3429. 2:40:36really didn't think about what it would
  3430. 2:40:38be like for them
3431. 2:40:40to find out their father or their
  3432. 2:40:43husband was a serial killer
3433. 2:40:46so if you consider that love is being
3434. 2:40:49able to think about what benefits the
3435. 2:40:52loved one then you would say Raiders
3436. 2:40:55love whatever it means does not run very
  3437. 2:40:57deep
  3438. 2:40:59today is a very historic day
  3439. 2:41:03the bottom line
  3440. 2:41:04BTK is arrested
  3441. 2:41:06[Music]
3442. 2:41:10the day demonstrator was arrested I'm in
  3443. 2:41:14a shopping center I hadn't gone into
3444. 2:41:16work yet my boss calls and he goes we're
3445. 2:41:19almost positive BTK has been caught you
3446. 2:41:22need to get into work right away
  3447. 2:41:24No Lie
  3448. 2:41:27the
3449. 2:41:28whole room the whole shopping center
  3450. 2:41:31started spinning
3451. 2:41:33the blood rushed from my head down to my
3452. 2:41:36toes and I sat down and said I'm gonna
  3453. 2:41:39faint and then I started crying
3454. 2:41:41I just cried and cried and cried and I
  3455. 2:41:45think
3456. 2:41:46I had much the same reaction as a lot of
  3457. 2:41:50women in Wichita had
3458. 2:41:52and that was such a sense of relief
  3459. 2:41:58credit card son of a [ __ ]
3460. 2:42:01you know Mom can rest in peace
3461. 2:42:05come across TV you know
  3462. 2:42:09I said Somebody's right there
  3463. 2:42:12to my mom
  3464. 2:42:16how did I know
  3465. 2:42:18unless I remembered
  3466. 2:42:20what he looked like
3467. 2:42:27kills me now every day
3468. 2:42:34it was it was very very uh
  3469. 2:42:37tense time
  3470. 2:42:39um I didn't know how to feel I wanted
  3471. 2:42:41Revenge
3472. 2:42:42I wanted I wanted to get my hands on
  3473. 2:42:44this guy
  3474. 2:42:52[Music]
3475. 2:42:53Raider tells us he had most of what he
3476. 2:42:56called the mother lode of evidence in a
3477. 2:42:59two-drawer file cabinet located in his
3478. 2:43:01compliance office at Park City
3479. 2:43:04when we were there it was unlocked there
3480. 2:43:06was a key to lock it up on top but it
3481. 2:43:08wasn't locked so he was pretty
3482. 2:43:10comfortable I guess that it was safe
3483. 2:43:11there he had everything categorized
3484. 2:43:14indexed and they're in an order kept all
3485. 2:43:18the originals of any correspondence of
3486. 2:43:20all the the artifacts that he was
3487. 2:43:21collecting he would mark them with dates
3488. 2:43:24and times the level of organization was
  3489. 2:43:27remarkable
3490. 2:43:31this time or in the past and how do you
3491. 2:43:34plead to these 10 counties guilty all
3492. 2:43:37right are you pleading guilty because
3493. 2:43:39you are guilty yes sir
3494. 2:43:42all right Mr Raider I need to find out
  3495. 2:43:45more information
  3496. 2:43:46well I mean I I I strongly miss this
  3497. 2:43:49Otero
3498. 2:43:51he was sentenced to 10 consecutive life
  3499. 2:43:54sentences
3500. 2:43:55the death penalty for his cases was not
3501. 2:43:58on the books and so we really never had
3502. 2:44:00a discussion about the death penal being
3503. 2:44:03possible he was fully aware that he was
3504. 2:44:06never going to see Freedom again
3505. 2:44:10I think that we in the media and in the
3506. 2:44:13community really fully understood the
  3507. 2:44:16damage he had done
3508. 2:44:19when you could feel that sense of relief
3509. 2:44:21that he was off the street forever in
3510. 2:44:24the courtroom families of some of btk's
3511. 2:44:27victims got their first real look at the
3512. 2:44:29man police believe killed their loved
  3513. 2:44:31ones this changed these young people's
  3514. 2:44:33lives 30 25 years ago and they've lived
  3515. 2:44:36with that ever since
3516. 2:44:38the criminal actions of Dennis Raider
3517. 2:44:40caused irreparable damage to the very
3518. 2:44:43fabric of my blood family
3519. 2:44:45he caused me to challenge my faith
  3520. 2:44:47changed my future forever
3521. 2:44:50yet I have never allowed his actions to
3522. 2:44:52send me to the dark side
3523. 2:44:55Nancy Fox is my sister
3524. 2:44:58Nancy's death is like a deep wound that
  3525. 2:45:02will never ever heal
3526. 2:45:04I'd just like for him to
3527. 2:45:06suffer for the rest of his life
  3528. 2:45:09I'm Jeffrey Davis
  3529. 2:45:11son of Dolores Davis
  3530. 2:45:14for the last 5 326 days I have wondered
3531. 2:45:17what it would be like to confront the
  3532. 2:45:19walking cesspool
  3533. 2:45:20that took my mother's precious life
3534. 2:45:23not only were we United as a family of
3535. 2:45:29survivors we were kind of representative
3536. 2:45:32of the family of citizens of the
  3537. 2:45:35community who had literally
  3538. 2:45:38lived in Terror times
3539. 2:45:42you have to live with the cold reality
3540. 2:45:44that while all of us here will overcome
3541. 2:45:47your depravity you have now lost
3542. 2:45:49everything and you will forever remain
  3543. 2:45:52nothing
3544. 2:45:55his wife requested an emergency divorce
  3545. 2:45:58and I think it's probably the quickest
3546. 2:46:00divorce in history is probably less than
  3547. 2:46:02five minutes I don't think she's ever
  3548. 2:46:03looked back
3549. 2:46:05I don't think she enjoys being in the
  3550. 2:46:09public she's never been interviewed
  3551. 2:46:12Paul and the kids became Dennis's
  3552. 2:46:14victims
  3553. 2:46:15I can't imagine the price that they've
  3554. 2:46:19paid
  3555. 2:46:20my heart
  3556. 2:46:23I can't imagine
3557. 2:46:27this is now Dennis Raider no longer in a
3558. 2:46:31courtroom suit but a prison uniform this
3559. 2:46:34is likely the last time you'll ever see
  3560. 2:46:37the serial killer again
  3561. 2:46:39pretty soon I'll be a black hole I won't
  3562. 2:46:41be here I'll be gone
  3563. 2:46:43I've accumulated a lot of deaths a lot
  3564. 2:46:46of hurt
3565. 2:46:47and shame on my family were saying and
3566. 2:46:50it's kind of like things have been
3567. 2:46:52sucked into me or I'm basically in the
  3568. 2:46:54black hole
3569. 2:46:55one of the things I suspected about
3570. 2:46:58raider there were things different about
3571. 2:47:00him than the typical things we know
  3572. 2:47:03about serial killers
