  4. 0:09together Pakistan is a country at the
  5. 0:12front line of climate change Pakistan
  6. 0:14has witnessed one of the deadliest
  7. 0:15Monson in history the Pakistan's climate
  8. 0:18crisis 1,200 deaths it it caused the
  9. 0:22kind of Devastation we've never seen
  10. 0:24before unable to survive under the sky
  11. 0:27because of the heat Pakistan is
  12. 0:29experienced in a climate Calamity why is
  13. 0:32no one helping us from devastating
  14. 0:35floods to droughts and glacial outbursts
  15. 0:38the impact is both immediate and
  16. 0:40far-reaching
  17. 0:44as Pakistan grapples with these climate
  18. 0:47crisis how is the government
  19. 0:49International bodies and businesses
  20. 0:51working to mitigate and adapt to ongoing
  21. 0:53challenges will
  22. 0:55this be the last time a country is going
  23. 0:58to be victim of this
  24. 1:01station addressing these pressing
  25. 1:03challenges requires not just National
  26. 1:05efforts but also Global collaboration
  27. 1:07the dawn media breath Pakistan
  28. 1:09International climate change conference
  29. 1:11brought together experts policy makers
  30. 1:13and Business Leaders to forge Solutions
  31. 1:16the two-day event focused on making
  32. 1:18Pakistan climate resilient by 2047 while
  33. 1:20fostering Regional cooperation to combat
  34. 1:23shared environmental challenges we
  35. 1:26prioritized governance reforms
  36. 1:30policy
  37. 1:31execution and capacity building within
  38. 1:35no time initiatives such as 5e
  39. 1:405c as rooted in our homegrown
  40. 1:44transformation
  41. 1:45plan uran Pakistan we are
  42. 1:50integrating climate resilience into
  43. 1:54energy Equity
  44. 1:56connectivity and development Pakistan
  45. 1:59stands the front line of of the climate
  46. 2:03crisis we have endured devastating
  47. 2:07floods we have prolonged we have seen
  48. 2:11prolonged droughts glacial melting and
  49. 2:14Rising temperatures that threaten not
  50. 2:16just livelihoods but entire ecosystems
  51. 2:20cods in Pakistan have shaped adaptive
  52. 2:23climate jurisprudence which is globally
  53. 2:25recognized now issuing directives to
  54. 2:27government institutions to take con
  55. 2:30steps toward climate adaptation across
  56. 2:32various sectors we are also very
  57. 2:35grateful to we20 and that Forum in terms
  58. 2:40of working on a comprehensive um climate
  59. 2:43Prosperity plan which will be inshallah
  60. 2:46unveiled during April we are working on
  61. 2:50debt for climate swaps to diversify
  62. 2:53financing sources and reduce borrowing
  63. 2:56costs for development projects the
  64. 2:58Planning Commission is aligning
  65. 3:00development partner funded programs with
  66. 3:02Pakistan's climate agenda ensuring all
  67. 3:05Investments contribute to National
  68. 3:08priorities hope is that not just the
  69. 3:13politicians not just the government
  70. 3:15official but the non-governmental
  71. 3:18organizations the media houses they all
  72. 3:21realize that how important it is uh to
  73. 3:26work on the climate change issue to camp
  74. 3:29pain on the climate change issue at the
  75. 3:32heart of the discussions was the need
  76. 3:34for Clear acable climate communication
  77. 3:37World bank's Global director for climate
  78. 3:38change valry hickey underscored this
  79. 3:41challenge the original sin of climate
  80. 3:44change and the reason why climate
  81. 3:46denialism is on the rise again and why
  82. 3:49we're not
  83. 3:51responding to the climate crisis because
  84. 3:53that's all we have in our control to do
  85. 3:55as respond is because of the way we
  86. 3:57communicate about climate change
  87. 4:00even the fact that we talk about climate
  88. 4:02change nobody knows what the climate is
  89. 4:03everybody knows what weather is why
  90. 4:06don't we just talk about the weather why
  91. 4:08don't we talk in terms that people
  92. 4:10understand and be very wary of the
  93. 4:13audience we're speaking
  94. 4:15to because how we describe what we do in
  95. 4:18adaptation at the World Bank to an
  96. 4:20audience of some of the smartest most
  97. 4:22educated people on climate change from
  98. 4:24the public and private sectors is very
  99. 4:26different to how we would speak about it
  100. 4:28to a farming family and yet too often in
  101. 4:31the climate change Community we say the
  102. 4:32same thing to both a audiences and
  103. 4:34neither audience understands what we're
  104. 4:36talking about anymore so Communications
  105. 4:38really is the original sin of the
  106. 4:40climate Community but I want to speak
  107. 4:43very briefly about our approach to
  108. 4:45adaptation because it defines an awful
  109. 4:47lot of our approach to Knowledge
  110. 4:48Management in the space and it starts
  111. 4:51and ends with water because when it
  112. 4:55comes to adaptation water is to
  113. 4:57adaptation what energy is to mitigation
  114. 4:59it's the Alpha and the
  115. 5:01Omega because people experience climate
  116. 5:04change through floods or drought or
  117. 5:06desertification or land degradation
  118. 5:09whether is a sudden shock or whether is
  119. 5:11the slow moving
  120. 5:13misery that hundreds of millions of
  121. 5:15people experience that never is in the
  122. 5:17news because the fact that somebody
  123. 5:19can't make enough off of their land
  124. 5:22isn't very exciting or sexy not compared
  125. 5:24to fires in Los Angeles when
  126. 5:27multi-million dollar celebrity homes are
  127. 5:28burning down but it is a slow motion
  128. 5:32misery and of course when I say we
  129. 5:35experience it's how we experience
  130. 5:37climate change we don't really
  131. 5:39experience climate change we're all
  132. 5:41going to be fine it's the poor it's the
  133. 5:44people who are already downtrodden for
  134. 5:46whom already just simply through an
  135. 5:48accident of birth have a lot less than
  136. 5:50all of we have Pakistan's response to
  137. 5:52these climate challenges is led by its
  138. 5:54Ministry of climate change which has
  139. 5:56introduced policies to adapt and
  140. 5:58mitigate risk rks you must be knowing
  141. 6:01that on the electrical Vehicles the the
  142. 6:03policy has been launched and that also
  143. 6:05we are going gone through in that and
  144. 6:06then um there are uh you know uh the
  145. 6:09climate Finance strategies are also
  146. 6:11being planned and then how we can uh you
  147. 6:13know the uh public and um private
  148. 6:16Partnerships which is very much
  149. 6:17important uh in that how and then how we
  150. 6:20can raise the funding how we can raise
  151. 6:22the you know funds for the CL in the
  152. 6:24climate resilience way Pakistani
  153. 6:27government is taking steps not only to
  154. 6:29address climate adaptation but also lead
  155. 6:32the charge in policy development with an
  156. 6:34emphasis on collaboration across
  157. 6:36different
  158. 6:56sectors is very much blessed with
  159. 6:58glaciers but at the same time being a
  160. 7:00vulnerable as
  161. 7:11well aldah complete now we in the phase
  162. 7:14of the Glo
  163. 7:20third as Pakistan faces the mounting
  164. 7:23challenges of climate change the
  165. 7:25government is working to involve all
  166. 7:26stakeholders in these critical
  167. 7:28initiatives but I think where there's a
  168. 7:30will there is a way and under the
  169. 7:32leadership of The Honorable prime
  170. 7:33minister Mia Muhammad Shabah Sharif
  171. 7:35which who is the currently uh the prime
  172. 7:38the minister of in charge of this
  173. 7:39ministry he's the minister of this
  174. 7:42ministry uh which shows that how much
  175. 7:44close this subject to his heart that he
  176. 7:46has uh keeping this uh portfolio with
  177. 7:49him and in a way because this is
  178. 7:51something where lots of coordination has
  179. 7:53been needed lots of crosscutting
  180. 7:55subjects going to be discussed among the
  181. 7:57provinces because you know we are right
  182. 7:59now uh in federal and the after the 18th
  183. 8:03Amendment so many like so many things of
  184. 8:05subjects have been devolved to the
  185. 8:06provinces so in that way uh you know we
  186. 8:09there are so many challenges where it
  187. 8:11needs to be discussed on the higher
  188. 8:13level so it is very important so that
  189. 8:15the in the beginning like you know as we
  190. 8:17have seen there are in few years back
  191. 8:18there are no meetings being done and so
  192. 8:21many challenges so now U those how to if
  193. 8:24you say how to handle so that is one of
  194. 8:26the thing before that the collaboration
  195. 8:29cooperation was much more needed which
  196. 8:31somehow alhamdulillah uh under under the
  197. 8:34leadership of the Prime Minister M
  198. 8:36Mohammad Shabah Shar s we have gone
  199. 8:38through with that and now we are very uh
  200. 8:41actively on all way we are focusing on
  201. 8:43that despite the challenges Pakistan
  202. 8:46continues to move forward in addressing
  203. 8:48climate change in a coming time uh
  204. 8:50because this is one more important
  205. 8:52subject which is you know I always say
  206. 8:54under the sky everything is related to
  207. 8:57the climate change so all the Ministries
  208. 8:59which we are are having like if you talk
  209. 9:00about you see if you talk about health
  210. 9:03health yeah you if you talk about health
  211. 9:05that is very much Rel related to the
  212. 9:07climate change if you talk about water
  213. 9:09energy commerce food in fact food
  214. 9:11andsecurity that all is somehow you know
  215. 9:14being very much related to yes so we are
  216. 9:17talking about the climate Justice in
  217. 9:18this in cop this time um uh Prime worthy
  218. 9:23prime minister and my I myself and along
  219. 9:25with my team along with our for Pakistan
  220. 9:28we have raised this voice again again
  221. 9:29and again that we need to focus on
  222. 9:31climate Justice we need to focus on
  223. 9:33climate Finance in the fight against
  224. 9:35climate change provincial governments
  225. 9:36play a critical role in turning policies
  226. 9:39into action Punjab is of course leading
  227. 9:42uh case study in the region and we did
  228. 9:44have we have seen um lesser patients in
  229. 9:47hospital uh in last uh 5 months the smog
  230. 9:50season about 11% decrease in uh the
  231. 9:53patient count uh when it comes to this
  232. 9:56only the season of uh intense Smog and
  233. 9:59the Peaks that you've seen in last uh
  234. 10:01four five months and also about uh 2
  235. 10:05weeks reduction in uh the smog
  236. 10:07indicators and the Peaks that we've seen
  237. 10:09in last uh five months is and other and
  238. 10:11other evidence-based data that that our
  239. 10:14policies were uh meaningful smog of
  240. 10:17course as we all know uh South Asia has
  241. 10:20most polluted cities um when we compare
  242. 10:23it to the rest of the world for the
  243. 10:24first time Punjab is seeing at holistic
  244. 10:27um comprehensive Mass trans trans it
  245. 10:29policy which is in place now already 28
  246. 10:32EV buses for the first time in Punjab in
  247. 10:34lore they've arrived in lore and the
  248. 10:36plan is to have more than 1500 buses
  249. 10:39across Punjab electric vehicle so um the
  250. 10:42province is going through a
  251. 10:43transitionary policy from converting our
  252. 10:46mass transit from uh traditional petrol
  253. 10:49based diesel based to more environmental
  254. 10:52friendly hybrid and uh electric vehicles
  255. 10:55uh there's also a plan under clean air
  256. 10:58Punjab
  257. 10:59uh project funded by World Bank to
  258. 11:02replace uh two wheelers and three
  259. 11:04wheelers um to um ebikes uh the project
  260. 11:08has already started with the students
  261. 11:10around 10,000 electric bikes have been
  262. 11:12given to University and college students
  263. 11:14under the same program uh then of course
  264. 11:17uh you know Punjab has been declared as
  265. 11:20uh zero plastic no plastic use the
  266. 11:24single Ed plastic is banned in Punjab at
  267. 11:27the moment and massive uh
  268. 11:30uh surveillance is and regulation is
  269. 11:33underway when it comes to anti- single
  270. 11:35use plastic campaign citizens in
  271. 11:38manufacturers they all are for the first
  272. 11:40time being listed under the no plastic
  273. 11:42bag campaign and the project that we
  274. 11:44have the Environmental Protection Agency
  275. 11:46is a very
  276. 11:47traditional uh challenge organization
  277. 11:50where they used to rent motorbikes uh
  278. 11:53for their surveillance for the first
  279. 11:54time uh they've been equipped with State
  280. 11:57state-of-the-art technology for their
  281. 11:59uh surveillance including monitors
  282. 12:02mobile Vans um uh also the air quality
  283. 12:06uh monitors mobile monitors drones have
  284. 12:10also been given body cams have been also
  285. 12:12given to uh the Environmental Protection
  286. 12:15a agency and also the institutional
  287. 12:17reform while Punjab battles Smog and air
  288. 12:20pollution K pak's vast Forest are a
  289. 12:23vital defense against carbon emissions
  290. 12:25but preserving these green lungs of
  291. 12:27Pakistan demands substant cial resources
  292. 12:30K
  293. 12:31Forest Area is 37% of the land we have
  294. 12:36in whole K and it makes around 40 to 45%
  295. 12:41of the forest C of
  296. 12:44Pakistan and
  297. 12:46as a carbon
  298. 12:49sink we are removing 50% carbon of
  299. 12:54Pakistan according to the undp and the
  300. 12:58World Bank research
  301. 12:59for this much Forest Area you need at
  302. 13:03least
  303. 13:04332 billion rupees per
  304. 13:07year so I'm not able to invest this much
  305. 13:10money but at least my Province and my
  306. 13:13people are doing a job of this big
  307. 13:16amount which is 332 billion and we are
  308. 13:19working for our country and we are
  309. 13:22paying our role our part for our people
  310. 13:27which are 25 CR in Pakistan leader Imran
  311. 13:31Khan has championed the climate change
  312. 13:35nationally and internationally and since
  313. 13:382017 in pakun till now he have spent
  314. 13:42more than 675 billion Rupees to improve
  315. 13:47and increase our forest
  316. 13:50area the international standard is
  317. 13:5325% but alhamdulillah pakun is right now
  318. 13:5726% it means that we have achieved the
  319. 14:00international standards and we are above
  320. 14:03it and if we say commercially the land
  321. 14:07which is being used for this purpose if
  322. 14:09commercially it is utilized in minerals
  323. 14:12in
  324. 14:13agriculture
  325. 14:14hospitality and urbanization so we can
  326. 14:18earn more than 217 billion per year so
  327. 14:21basically we are sacrificing 2117
  328. 14:24billion per year for this being the
  329. 14:28carbon sink
  330. 14:29for Pakistan and we are proud of it
  331. 14:32Beyond Pakistan Regional cooperation
  332. 14:34emerged as a key theme at the breed
  333. 14:36Pakistan conference experts stress that
  334. 14:39the climate crisis is not limited to one
  335. 14:41country it required a United South Asian
  336. 14:44response in the high Himalaya from the
  337. 14:46karakuram hindukush all the way to ncha
  338. 14:48barua in the easternmost tip of the
  339. 14:51Himalaya you have permafrost melting
  340. 14:56permafrost melting is the melting of
  341. 14:58Perma FR us is not yet a discussion even
  342. 15:01among academics but the
  343. 15:05Frozen uh brick sorry Frozen Stones
  344. 15:09Boulders dust detritus is loosening up
  345. 15:14loosening up and when you have extreme
  346. 15:16climate events and rainfall you have
  347. 15:19what happened in sikim last year what
  348. 15:22happened in the meleni river of Nepal uh
  349. 15:252 years 3 years ago incredible crisis
  350. 15:29for which we already have the indicators
  351. 15:31in front of us I would say the best way
  352. 15:34to deal with water is to stop it at the
  353. 15:37height that it is height is a great
  354. 15:41resource more than oil I would say
  355. 15:44mountains are what gives height to water
  356. 15:49whether in Frozen palms or in permafrost
  357. 15:52or in flowing water now stop it where it
  358. 15:56is should be our strategy and dropping
  359. 15:59it there and then making it useful
  360. 16:02Downstream can be done in two ways one
  361. 16:05would be freeze and refreeze freeze it
  362. 16:09when it flows in cold mountains so that
  363. 16:12it can be used in spring and summer when
  364. 16:15Farmers need it and one way we are
  365. 16:18seeing at in ladak at hayal the
  366. 16:21Himalayan Institute is to get people
  367. 16:24from all of these places to for courses
  368. 16:27modules that uh they can participate
  369. 16:30learn the techniques and go back to
  370. 16:33their places and become Partners in
  371. 16:35implementing in their own context that
  372. 16:38way because Technologies are not easy
  373. 16:42for every village community to invent so
  374. 16:45there could be Regional Laboratories we
  375. 16:48hope Himalayan Institute of ladak can
  376. 16:50become Himalayan Institute of Nepal
  377. 16:53Pakistan Afghanistan know and various
  378. 16:56countries where you prepare The Young
  379. 17:00and the old for understanding their
  380. 17:03climate their context and coming up with
  381. 17:06solution to support implementation of
  382. 17:09such techniques whether it is check dams
  383. 17:11or ice dams or ice scoopers or Glo
  384. 17:16refreezing will need resources and
  385. 17:19international support plays a crucial
  386. 17:21role in Pakistan's climate response as
  387. 17:24one of the countries most affected by
  388. 17:26climate change Pakistan receives vital
  389. 17:28assistance distance from organizations
  390. 17:30like the United Nations uh so Pakistan
  391. 17:33is doing a lot of things in terms of
  392. 17:35advocacy uh it has uh plans and Visions
  393. 17:38such as the living indust initiative to
  394. 17:41sustain the ecosystem of the indust but
  395. 17:43the major challenge that Pakistan faces
  396. 17:45is climate financing uh many of the
  397. 17:48countries that have uh promised in the
  398. 17:50several cops uh to fund uh countries
  399. 17:54that are impacted by climate change uh
  400. 17:56adopt but also mitigate and create
  401. 17:58defenses against the impacts of climate
  402. 18:01change have not uh in many ways met
  403. 18:05their commitments the UN stands firmly
  404. 18:07behind Pakistan's call for climate
  405. 18:09Justice urging the world's wealthiest
  406. 18:11Nations to fulfill their financial
  407. 18:13commitments no uh Pakistan is in the top
  408. 18:16top 10 countries uh countries that are
  409. 18:19severely impacted by climate change uh
  410. 18:22we know the floods I don't have to tell
  411. 18:24you uh you also have
  412. 18:26drought uh severe droughts in parts of
  413. 18:29the country uh you also experience uh
  414. 18:31glacial
  415. 18:32outbursts um so Pakistan's uh
  416. 18:35development and his ability to meet the
  417. 18:37sustainable development goals are much
  418. 18:40uh threatened by the uh impact of
  419. 18:42climate change so for us in the UN we
  420. 18:45see climate change here in the context
  421. 18:47of Pakistan as an inhibitor for
  422. 18:49development while the Pakistani
  423. 18:51government spearheads climate policies
  424. 18:53the United Nations also plays a crucial
  425. 18:55role in raising awareness and
  426. 18:57encouraging global resp responsibility
  427. 19:00so we are the United Nations are behind
  428. 19:02Pakistan and supporting Pakistan uh uh
  429. 19:05in in its moral right to
  430. 19:08request um uh those who have polluted
  431. 19:11and have caused uh this kind of
  432. 19:14unpredictable climate uh extremes uh to
  433. 19:18support countries like Pakistan we also
  434. 19:20help Pakistan in responding to the
  435. 19:23impacts of climate change such as the
  436. 19:242022 floods uh the UN was at the
  437. 19:27Forefront in helping Pakistan respond
  438. 19:30through humanitarian response and up to
  439. 19:33today uh supporting communities that
  440. 19:36have impacted and lost everything they
  441. 19:38had uh to reconstruct their lives um uh
  442. 19:43but this is the most challenging uh
  443. 19:45thing that Pakistan faces in its ability
  444. 19:47to meet its own Vision uh to have a
  445. 19:50peaceful and prosperous
  446. 19:52country of climate change is not a one
  447. 19:55nation it doesn't it doesn't sit it yeah
  448. 19:57it doesn't sit uh on a border and say
  449. 19:59you know smoke will only impact Pakistan
  450. 20:03and not India or or Afghanistan this is
  451. 20:05a global challenge the crossb challenge
  452. 20:08um so you need the International
  453. 20:09Community together the UN facilities the
  454. 20:11cop the annual cop meeting but also the
  455. 20:15un uh uh uh through our Secretary
  456. 20:17General represent the moral voice of
  457. 20:20those who have been impacted and you've
  458. 20:22seen our Secretary General come here uh
  459. 20:25in 2022 uh to stand absolutely to stand
  460. 20:28with the people of Pakistan and ask the
  461. 20:30world especially the rich countries who
  462. 20:32have significantly contributed to global
  463. 20:35warming to do more in helping countries
  464. 20:38like Pakistan uh I'm his representative
  465. 20:40a representative Secretary General here
  466. 20:41in Pakistan and my job is to stand
  467. 20:44behind the people and the government of
  468. 20:46Pakistan as it fights uh uh the
  469. 20:49devastating impact of climate change but
  470. 20:52also help Pakistan itself uh develop a
  471. 20:55green future for itself to make sure
  472. 20:57that uh Pakistan does not join as it
  473. 21:00develops uh uh those those Nations who
  474. 21:03have uh contributed to uh global warming
  475. 21:07so we bring everybody who can help uh
  476. 21:10those who can provide technical support
  477. 21:13uh we we facilitate uh uh those who want
  478. 21:16to provide financial support those who
  479. 21:18want to provide concessional loans so
  480. 21:21anything that is available uh uh uh both
  481. 21:24financing technical support but also the
  482. 21:27moral platforms uh such as cop and
  483. 21:30others to remind people uh at the End of
  484. 21:33This Global discussions are human beings
  485. 21:37that have been displaced uh that have
  486. 21:39lost their lives uh that are constantly
  487. 21:41being threatened uh through flooding and
  488. 21:44other forms of climate uh one thing I
  489. 21:48really like about the Pakistan's
  490. 21:49approach and the approach of Partners
  491. 21:52such as da is the self-help the
  492. 21:54recognition that you have to deal with
  493. 21:57this problem uh inter National Community
  494. 21:59has a important role especially
  495. 22:01financing but communities across borders
  496. 22:04in the in the south Asia region have to
  497. 22:07come together and find a solution uh to
  498. 22:09this issue uh of of climate change and
  499. 22:11this is why we are the UN excited to
  500. 22:14play a an important role uh be a partner
  501. 22:17with Don uh to make sure that uh uh
  502. 22:20climate action uh in this region uh is
  503. 22:23is it's it's everybody's business and uh
  504. 22:25both the private sector the government
  505. 22:27and Civil Society
  506. 22:29corporate responsibility is no longer
  507. 22:31optional the private sector is realizing
  508. 22:33its role in addressing the climate
  509. 22:35crisis with organizations like the
  510. 22:37Pakistan Business Council Leading The
  511. 22:39Way businesses are are very acutely
  512. 22:42aware uh that it's it's not just climate
  513. 22:45change it's not just environment but the
  514. 22:47broader estg framework is something that
  515. 22:49they need to comply with uh if you're a
  516. 22:51multinational company you have to behave
  517. 22:54equally responsibly in Pakistan as you
  518. 22:55do abroad if you're a large Local
  519. 22:57Company you are also raising Capital uh
  520. 23:01either from the stock exchange or or
  521. 23:03from Banks and State Bank of
  522. 23:08Pakistan environmental
  523. 23:11responsibility
  524. 23:12framework Banks adopt so when the banks
  525. 23:15are lending money they evaluate every
  526. 23:18year uh the the the state of their
  527. 23:21exposure uh in terms of environment and
  528. 23:24in terms of the broader framework uh of
  529. 23:26ESG uh in terms of you know their
  530. 23:30whether their clients their borrowers
  531. 23:32are according by that uh standard uh and
  532. 23:35if they are not uh then they given a
  533. 23:37certain time period to to to start
  534. 23:39according and if obviously there are
  535. 23:41some that will never be able to do so so
  536. 23:43the banks are actually exiting uh
  537. 23:45relationships there so this is uh one
  538. 23:48one of the ways that uh private sector
  539. 23:50is becoming uh you know more responsible
  540. 23:53towards the environment local businesses
  541. 23:55are also Under Pressure to comply with
  542. 23:57environmental regulations ations but
  543. 23:59many have turned these challenges into
  544. 24:01opportunities businesses uh impact
  545. 24:04climate change in many ways U the the
  546. 24:07easiest one to look at is what they do
  547. 24:09within their own organization in terms
  548. 24:11of
  549. 24:13factoru
  550. 24:19discharge that businesses that's the
  551. 24:22easy part really relatively speaking
  552. 24:24because you know it's a it's a question
  553. 24:26of invest investing in the right
  554. 24:27equipment but also adopting the right
  555. 24:30practices starting to measure because
  556. 24:32you can only manage what you measure so
  557. 24:34these are things that the businesses
  558. 24:35have started some years ago at least the
  559. 24:37larger the more responsible businesses
  560. 24:39now the next of course uh uh challenge
  561. 24:42if you like uh objective is to get them
  562. 24:44to do the same with their value chain
  563. 24:47Partners you know the customers and the
  564. 24:48suppliers foreign investors are equally
  565. 24:50committed to sustainability through
  566. 24:52organizations like the overseas
  567. 24:54investors Chambers of Commerce and
  568. 24:55Industry multinational companies are
  569. 24:58setting the standard for environmental
  570. 25:13practices very high standards
  571. 25:30interal
  572. 25:39standards oci's members are not only
  573. 25:42cutting emissions but also leading
  574. 25:44efforts in recycling and sustainable
  575. 25:46packaging for
  576. 25:49example 97%
  577. 26:24gas recy
  578. 26:50GCI commitments to sustainability is
  579. 26:52helping set a global standard for
  580. 26:54environmental responsibility in Pakistan
  581. 27:14impr subject discuss as the climate
  582. 27:17crisis deepens businesses are focusing
  583. 27:19on not just sustainability but Disaster
  584. 27:22Response and Recovery Bank alala a key
  585. 27:25player in corporate responsibility has
  586. 27:27set an example with its proactive
  587. 27:29approach to flood relief and green
  588. 27:31financing Bank Gula actually took the
  589. 27:35the last disaster that hit Pakistan the
  590. 27:37big floods in 2022 very
  591. 27:40seriously um and we had a strong look
  592. 27:44inwards to see what is our
  593. 27:46responsibility in such a
  594. 27:49circumstance and therefore Bank alala
  595. 27:51became the largest corporate donor uh
  596. 27:55for the flood relief program the
  597. 27:57immediate relief effort that was
  598. 27:58required to get people to at least be
  599. 28:01able to save their lives uh and uh the
  600. 28:05bigger part was the long-term
  601. 28:08Rehabilitation uh which included uh
  602. 28:10rebuilding of houses um uh Recreation of
  603. 28:15livelihoods and then for long-term
  604. 28:18sustainable future also invest in uh
  605. 28:21education in health uh and building U
  606. 28:25you know sustainable livelihoods for
  607. 28:27people longterm
  608. 28:28Beyond immediate relief the bank has
  609. 28:30made significant investments in green
  610. 28:32projects to ensure that Pakistan is
  611. 28:35prepared for future climate
  612. 28:37challenges so we have a whole program
  613. 28:39for green financing uh and we've been
  614. 28:42working with um uh institutions like
  615. 28:46karandas uh We've also had uh
  616. 28:49consultancy support from
  617. 28:51IFC um and uh we have developed a
  618. 28:55program that supports uh existing
  619. 28:58customers to convert uh their businesses
  620. 29:01to to more sustainable uh
  621. 29:04methodologies for instance the in the
  622. 29:06production of power uh We've helped a
  623. 29:09number of customers move away from the
  624. 29:12traditional fossil fuel um generation of
  625. 29:16electricity and power to renewable
  626. 29:19sources uh and that includes now that we
  627. 29:22have we've invested in um Bas based
  628. 29:27power projects uh also uh hydle projects
  629. 29:31solar projects and wind wind power so
  630. 29:34these are renew renewable energy
  631. 29:36projects that we very um focused on
  632. 29:39supporting and we have done a number of
  633. 29:41them uh over the last few years and we
  634. 29:43will continue to do do so in the
  635. 29:46future um also we're looking at um you
  636. 29:51know where this this direction and this
  637. 29:54U uh technology is taking us in the
  638. 29:57future future and are studying that uh
  639. 30:01further to be able to support in the
  640. 30:02future so um just in the year 2024 uh we
  641. 30:08were able to support uh projects worth
  642. 30:1126 billion through our financing uh
  643. 30:14that's a significant number to be to
  644. 30:17have been done in one year and inshallah
  645. 30:19we're looking to increase that in the
  646. 30:21future the bank uh obviously has a
  647. 30:23number of different U premises across
  648. 30:26Pakistan and uh we now realize that a
  649. 30:29lot of them need to be converted more
  650. 30:32towards uh green
  651. 30:34buildings uh and we've uh undertaken an
  652. 30:38exercise with the IFC to see what are
  653. 30:40those steps that we need to take not
  654. 30:43only as far as real estate is concerned
  655. 30:45but are other operating practices that
  656. 30:48need to uh be more responsible from a an
  657. 30:52environment protection perspective as
  658. 30:55we've seen the climate crisis is a
  659. 30:57global issue
  660. 30:58with deeply local consequences Pakistan
  661. 31:01stands at the Forefront facing some of
  662. 31:03the harshest impacts yet the nation
  663. 31:06remains resilient from government
  664. 31:08policies to corporate responsibility and
  665. 31:10international Partnerships the country
  666. 31:12is stepping up to meet the challenge but
  667. 31:15this fight requires more than just local
  668. 31:17efforts Global action is needed to
  669. 31:19ensure that promises are kept and that
  670. 31:21the most vulnerable are supported the
  671. 31:24road ahead may be tough but with
  672. 31:26cooperation innovation and commitment
  673. 31:29there is hope in the face of adversity
  674. 31:32Pakistan's Journey towards climate
  675. 31:33resilience is not just a national effort
  676. 31:37it is a call to the world to act to join
  677. 31:40in the fight for a sustainable future
  678. 31:42this is just the beginning from
  679. 31:45government policies and international
  680. 31:47collaboration to corporate Investments
  681. 31:49and green financing Pakistan is
  682. 31:51mobilizing all sectors to address the
  683. 31:53climate crisis but this fight is far
  684. 31:57from over as we move forward how can the
  685. 32:00corporate sector continue to innovate
  686. 32:02and lead the way to a sustainable
  687. 32:07future breathe Pakistan a dawn media
  688. 32:10initiative let's weather the change
