- 0:39Okay, let's get into today's stories.
- 0:42>> [music]
- 1:00>> Around 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, August
- 1:0213th, 2011, 19-year-old Wang Weijia was
- 1:06with his friends Ma Jun and Joe Guo at
- 1:09an internet cafe in the city of Taiping,
- 1:11China, watching Jun play a computer
- 1:14game. Now, Weijia and his friends went
- 1:16to this cafe a lot and today they'd
- 1:18literally been there for hours by this
- 1:20point.
- 1:21But now, as Jun finished up the game he
- 1:23was playing, Guo announced that he was
- 1:25actually ready to go do something else
- 1:27now. So, the three of these guys spent a
- 1:29lot of the time together, whether it was
- 1:31at an internet cafe or elsewhere. They
- 1:33were like really close friends.
- 1:34And generally speaking, Weijia usually
- 1:37just did whatever Jun and Guo wanted to
- 1:39do since they both had strong opinions
- 1:42and Weijia was more of a
- 1:43go-with-the-flow type of guy.
- 1:45And so now, as Guo decided they were
- 1:47done with games, Weijia was just like,
- 1:50"All right, cool. Well, why don't we
- 1:51just head back to one of our places just
- 1:53to hang out." But Guo, he shook his head
- 1:55and said, "No way. Like it's it's
- 1:56Saturday." They didn't have to be up for
- 1:58school the next day and so they could
- 2:00stay out all night if they wanted to.
- 2:02And so he said like we got to find
- 2:03something really exciting to do. Like we
- 2:05got to make the most of this night. Now,
- 2:07nobody had like a great idea of what was
- 2:09going to be super exciting. And so Guo
- 2:11was like, all right, well, for now, like
- 2:13let's just go outside and we can smoke
- 2:15first and then we can go from there. And
- 2:17at this, both June and Weijia just
- 2:20nodded in agreement. Like, okay, that's
- 2:22the plan. But in reality, Weijia wasn't
- 2:25really sure if he felt comfortable
- 2:27staying out all night tonight.
- 2:29Because tonight was not just a normal
- 2:31night. Like this was a an iffy night to
- 2:34stay out all night. So this particular
- 2:37weekend was not just an ordinary
- 2:39weekend. It was actually the area's
- 2:41annual ghost festival. The time on the
- 2:43lunar calendar when ghosts apparently
- 2:46would wander the streets after dark. And
- 2:48Weijia's family, along with his friends'
- 2:51families, and frankly a lot of other
- 2:53people in this area, they took this
- 2:55festival really seriously. They believed
- 2:58the ghosts really were out wandering the
- 3:00streets after dark because they were
- 3:01just very superstitious. In fact, in
- 3:04this area, this festival was taken so
- 3:06seriously that businesses would often
- 3:08close early so people could safely make
- 3:11their way home before nightfall. Now,
- 3:13Weijia himself didn't really necessarily
- 3:16believe in ghosts, you know, despite his
- 3:18family appearing to very much believe in
- 3:20them.
- 3:21But the reality was is Weijia was just
- 3:23not a guy who ruffled feathers. He He
- 3:25went with the flow. He was a He was a
- 3:26rule follower. So in his mind he was
- 3:29thinking, "Ah, it's the ghost festival.
- 3:31Kind of don't want to stay out late
- 3:32tonight." But now, Guo was already
- 3:34making his way towards the exit with
- 3:36June and so Weijia didn't bother to
- 3:38argue. Instead, he just
- 3:40followed right along and they went
- 3:42outside to smoke.
- 3:43About an hour later, Weijia was sitting
- 3:46in the passenger seat of his own car
- 3:47with June behind the wheel and Guo in
- 3:49the back and they were driving down a
- 3:51road in the outskirts of town. And by
- 3:54this point, the sun had set, and so now
- 3:56they were officially in ghost festival
- 3:59territory. Like, presumably there are
- 4:01ghosts out now out on the roads. So,
- 4:03after leaving the internet cafe, the
- 4:05three of them they had a smoke, but then
- 4:07as they're out there they they couldn't
- 4:09come up with a compelling idea for how
- 4:11to spend the rest of their their big
- 4:13night out. All they came up with is,
- 4:15"Ah, let's just like get in the car and
- 4:17drive around and maybe we'll figure out
- 4:19something to do." Now, initially when
- 4:20they hopped in the car, they're
- 4:21thinking, "Okay, like it's getting dark
- 4:23out, like we're going to be driving
- 4:25around during the ghost festival. We're
- 4:26bound to find something exciting to do."
- 4:28And so all of them are like they're
- 4:30amped up. They're in the car. They're
- 4:31pumped. We're going to find something
- 4:32fun.
- 4:34But after a while, they were just
- 4:35randomly driving around. No one's really
- 4:37out because again, it's this ghost
- 4:39festival. Everybody's, you know, in
- 4:40their homes. There's nothing going on.
- 4:43And it just became really really boring.
- 4:45They're just like driving around and
- 4:47nothing's going on. And so at a certain
- 4:48point, Weija is just feeling so
- 4:50frustrated because it's like he didn't
- 4:52want to be out here in the first place.
- 4:53He didn't voice that to his friends, but
- 4:55like he didn't want to be out here. He
- 4:56just wanted to be home.
- 4:58And so he just was like, "Man, like this
- 5:00is so boring." And he just leaned his
- 5:02head up against the window and just
- 5:04decided to drift off to sleep. [music]
- 5:06And so he's like closing his eyes. He's
- 5:07just laying there. And June, who's
- 5:09driving, is just, you know, driving
- 5:10along. They're not really talking. And
- 5:12so Weija, as he's laying there, he
- 5:14suddenly feels the car come to a
- 5:16screeching stop. And Guo in the back
- 5:19seat immediately reflexively screams at
- 5:22June, the driver, like, "Hey, what are
- 5:24you doing? Drive more carefully." And
- 5:26Weija, he's like looking around, like,
- 5:27"What just happened?"
- 5:28>> [music]
- 5:28>> And he looks over at June, who's
- 5:30driving, and June is not paying any
- 5:32attention to Guo or to Weija. He's just
- 5:36pointing out the windshield at something
- 5:38on the road and he's like, "Look!" And
- 5:40so Weija, who's just sort of confused
- 5:42because a moment ago he was half asleep,
- 5:44he he looks from June out the front
- 5:46windshield to see what he's pointing at.
- 5:49And there's this woman who's just
- 5:51sitting in the middle of the road.
- 5:52They're out on the outskirts of town.
- 5:54Like there's no really any buildings
- 5:55around or anything. Like they're out in
- 5:57the sticks. And it's dark out and
- 5:59everyone's home for the ghost festival.
- 6:01And there's just this woman sitting on
- 6:03the ground. She's wearing this floral
- 6:05dress. And there's a bike that she has
- 6:07that's next to her just propped up. And
- 6:09she's almost been hit by a car. Like
- 6:11they stopped very close to her. She's
- 6:13almost been hit by a car. And she's just
- 6:15sitting there staring blankly
- 6:18at the car.
- 6:19And so June, he's he's pointing at her
- 6:21like he can't believe it. He almost hit
- 6:22her. And we're just like, "What's going
- 6:24on?" And Gual, like he doesn't even know
- 6:26what to make of it. And at some point
- 6:28June sort of snaps out of it and he and
- 6:30he leans out the window and he yells at
- 6:31the woman to like get out of the way.
- 6:33Like, "What are you doing? Like get out
- 6:34of the road."
- 6:36But the woman didn't budge. She just sat
- 6:38there staring at them. Just on the
- 6:39ground, not a care in the world. Just
- 6:41looking right at all three of them.
- 6:44And so eventually, after sort of the
- 6:45tension in the car went down a little
- 6:47bit,
- 6:48June just pulled his head back in the
- 6:49window and he looked at his friends and
- 6:51he's like, "I don't know." And he just
- 6:53drove around this woman, you know, just
- 6:55avoided her. And they continued driving
- 6:57along. For the next few hours, the three
- 7:00boys just continued driving around town
- 7:02looking for something to do. But
- 7:04there still was nothing to do. You know,
- 7:06everything's basically abandoned cuz
- 7:08it's this ghost festival night. Nobody's
- 7:10out. No businesses are open. There's
- 7:11nothing to do.
- 7:13And what really had not left any of
- 7:14their minds, even though they really
- 7:16didn't talk about it,
- 7:18was that woman. Like that was so unusual
- 7:20to just see her sitting there not
- 7:22reacting to nearly being hit. Like the
- 7:25whole thing was just so creepy. Made
- 7:27more so because it's the night of this
- 7:29ghost festival. Like talk about the
- 7:31creepiest night to see something like
- 7:33that. And so eventually, around like
- 7:351:00 a.m. when the boys are still just
- 7:36driving around, someone in the car
- 7:38suggests like, "Hey,
- 7:40let's go back to that intersection and
- 7:42see if she's still there. Like, let's
- 7:43just see what she's doing. Now, keep in
- 7:45mind, it's been hours since they've seen
- 7:48this woman. Like, hours.
- 7:50And so, they drive back around, not
- 7:52really expecting to see her there. They
- 7:53think that like, no matter how weird
- 7:55that was, she has to have gotten up and
- 7:56left by now.
- 7:58But, no. They turn onto that road, which
- 8:00again is outside of the town. It's like,
- 8:02there's no buildings around. It's dark
- 8:03minus their headlights.
- 8:05And they drive down this road, and sure
- 8:07enough, off in the distance, still
- 8:09sitting in this intersection, is this
- 8:11woman. She's unmoved. She's just sitting
- 8:14there in her dress with a bike next to
- 8:16her, just
- 8:18hours later. No change.
- 8:20And so, now it's like the boys can't
- 8:22help but feel really uneasy here. Like,
- 8:25this isn't right. Something's wrong with
- 8:27this woman. I mean, also, they can't
- 8:29help but think like, it's the night of
- 8:31the ghost festival. Are we seeing a
- 8:33ghost? Like, they're terrified. I mean,
- 8:35that's that's the reality is they were
- 8:36scared. But, really, more than anything,
- 8:39what all three of them were thinking and
- 8:40discussing in the car
- 8:42is, we got to tell someone about [music]
- 8:44her. Like, there's something wrong with
- 8:46this woman. What is she doing? Is she
- 8:48mentally unwell? Is she on drugs? We
- 8:50don't know. But, like, this isn't okay.
- 8:53We got to tell someone. But, for now,
- 8:55the three boys decided that they had had
- 8:57enough fun for one night, and they drove
- 8:59to June's house, and they just all
- 9:00crashed there, determined to figure out
- 9:02what to do with this woman and what they
- 9:04saw the next day. And so, several hours
- 9:06later, the boys wake up. They make their
- 9:09way into the kitchen cuz they can hear
- 9:10June's mom is in there making breakfast.
- 9:13And right away, June tells his mom what
- 9:15happened the night before. And as he's
- 9:17regaling her in the details of the
- 9:19story, June and Guo also chimed in with
- 9:22their perspective. And then, after they
- 9:24were done telling June's mom, they all
- 9:26sort of expected her, you know, being an
- 9:28authority figure, to to know what to do.
- 9:31That she would very likely say, "Okay,
- 9:32we need to call the police, or we need
- 9:34to call a hospital, or we need to call
- 9:35some other authority figure and handle
- 9:38this professionally.
- 9:40But she didn't do any of that. Instead,
- 9:41she just kind of looked at the boys and
- 9:43she said,
- 9:44"You saw a ghost."

- 10:52[music]
- 10:55Now, at first, all three boys were just
- 10:57shocked at how confidently and calmly
- 11:00she said this. I mean, of course they
- 11:02knew about the annual ghost festival.
- 11:04And of course, people in this town were
- 11:06very superstitious including their own
- 11:07families. They knew this meant a lot,
- 11:09this festival.
- 11:10But the idea that we're going to sit
- 11:12here and literally say that the woman we
- 11:14saw sitting on the ground last night was
- 11:16a literal ghost, that seemed crazy.
- 11:19And the boys began saying as much to
- 11:21June's mom. But June's mom was just
- 11:23really annoyed with them and just
- 11:24basically shot them down and said,
- 11:26"Look, you saw a ghost, but like that's
- 11:29the reason you're not supposed to be out
- 11:30on the night of the annual ghost
- 11:32festival. It's why the businesses shut
- 11:34down. It's why we all go home before
- 11:36nightfall. You knew you weren't supposed
- 11:38to be out at night. You were. That's why
- 11:40this happened. Not to mention, these
- 11:42ghosts, they don't just wander around.
- 11:45They target people. You were targeted.
- 11:48Now, June's mother was not just throwing
- 11:50that out there. She was referencing one
- 11:53other aspect of this annual ghost
- 11:55festival that lots of people in this
- 11:57area believed, which was these ghosts
- 12:00that wandered around after dark on this
- 12:02one night of the year, they weren't just
- 12:04wandering around. They were looking for
- 12:06people to effectively latch onto. And
- 12:09so, part of the reason people believed
- 12:10you need to stay in at night and avoid
- 12:12being out after dark is because if you
- 12:15basically interact with one of these
- 12:17ghosts, they could latch onto you, and
- 12:19then you become its target. In some
- 12:22cases, people believe it just produces
- 12:24really bad luck for you for potentially
- 12:26months at a stretch.
- 12:28Some other people say that once you've
- 12:30been targeted by one of these ghosts,
- 12:32they may try to kill you. Specifically,
- 12:34they may try to drown you. And so, no
- 12:36one really knew, but it was like this
- 12:38belief that you just never want to
- 12:40interact with a ghost because it could
- 12:42be very bad for you. And so, June and
- 12:44Guo, they still tried to argue a little
- 12:46with June's mother, trying to tell her
- 12:47that no, this could not possibly be a
- 12:49ghost, but
- 12:50>> [music]
- 12:50>> their voices seemed less forceful now,
- 12:52and Wei Ja, like he was sitting there
- 12:54thinking like,
- 12:56"Actually, if that was a ghost, this
- 12:58kind of makes sense." It explains why
- 13:00she didn't react at all to nearly being
- 13:02hit by a car. She just sat there. Also,
- 13:05why is she just sitting there? Strange
- 13:07activity for anybody to be doing. Maybe
- 13:08a ghost would do that. It also kind of
- 13:10explains why she was still there hours
- 13:12and hours later, just sitting in the
- 13:13middle of the road. Like other cars must
- 13:16have gone by. Like, this is not normal
- 13:18behavior. And so, Wei Ja is thinking,
- 13:20"Wait a minute.
- 13:22Maybe this was a ghost." However, just
- 13:24as Wei Ja really started to feel almost
- 13:27sick with worry about, you know, the
- 13:28seriousness of what had happened.
- 13:30He heard June's mom tell them, "Don't be
- 13:33afraid." She said, "Look, I know exactly
- 13:35what you need to do to stay safe." Later
- 13:37that same day, Waija parked his car at a
- 13:40cemetery that was near June's house. And
- 13:42after he parked, [music] he and June got
- 13:44out while Guo stayed behind in the car.
- 13:47All three of them were very tense. They
- 13:49were very anxious.
- 13:51And as Waija scanned the headstones and
- 13:53looked over at a cornfield that was next
- 13:55to the cemetery, all he was thinking is
- 13:57this this ghost this ghost woman is
- 13:59going to appear at any moment and she's
- 14:01going to do something to us. But she
- 14:03didn't. And so eventually, Waija and
- 14:06June
- 14:07began walking down the path that would
- 14:09lead them through all the gravestones,
- 14:10basically deeper into the cemetery. So,
- 14:13the reason these two were here and now
- 14:14walking into the cemetery is because
- 14:16they were following June's mother's
- 14:18advice for how to stay safe now that
- 14:20they had potentially [music]
- 14:21come in contact with this this ghost.
- 14:24And so they had gone out and acquired a
- 14:26stack of ghost money and now they were
- 14:28going to go spend it. So, ghost money is
- 14:31a kind of paper sheet in China that
- 14:34typically is burned when a loved one
- 14:36dies. The idea is when you burn this
- 14:38money, it sort of goes to the deceased
- 14:41loved one and then they have money for
- 14:44the afterlife. You're basically giving
- 14:46your deceased loved one currency for the
- 14:48afterlife. But it can also be a way to
- 14:52buy protection from angry spirits. So,
- 14:55Waija and his friends have been told to
- 14:57burn ghost money over their family grave
- 15:00plots so that their dead ancestors could
- 15:03>> [music]
- 15:03>> essentially pay the ghost the evil ghost
- 15:06to leave them alone. Now, they'd already
- 15:08done this at Guo's family plot in a
- 15:10separate cemetery, so that's why Guo was
- 15:12staying back in the car.
- 15:14And now they were going to do June's
- 15:15family plot in this cemetery. And so
- 15:18Waija and June, they continue walking
- 15:19through the cemetery until finally they
- 15:21reached of June's ancestors' graves.
- 15:24There they knelt down, they pulled out
- 15:26their ghost money, and they began to
- 15:28burn the bills. And they're both just
- 15:29kneeling there, burning this money. And
- 15:31with each, you know, bill that crumpled
- 15:33up and smoldered, both of them were
- 15:35feeling like this enormous wave of
- 15:37relief coming over them. And so for a
- 15:39little while they're just burning their
- 15:40money, and they're both looking down at
- 15:42the money on the ground. They're just
- 15:43kneeling there.
- 15:45But then at some point Waja just looked
- 15:48up. And as soon as he did, he froze.
- 15:52Because standing right behind June, June
- 15:55can't see this, right behind June is
- 15:58that woman in a dress. And she's looking
- 16:01at both [music] of them.
- 16:03And Waja was so scared he shrieked. He
- 16:06jumped up, turned, and started running
- 16:09in the opposite direction. Now, June is
- 16:11so startled by Waja's screaming that he
- 16:13jumped up ready to run away himself, but
- 16:16he's watching Waja take off and he he
- 16:18turns around cuz he could tell Waja saw
- 16:20something behind him.
- 16:22But there's nothing behind him. And he's
- 16:24thinking he must have seen the ghost
- 16:25because why else would he react this
- 16:27way? But there's there's nobody here.
- 16:29And so June sort of put together like
- 16:31what's going on here. Like Waja clearly
- 16:33spooked himself. We're in a cemetery
- 16:34after all. And he sees Waja and he's
- 16:37running and he's running and he
- 16:38disappears into the cornfield that was
- 16:41next to the cemetery. He's just gone.
- 16:43Just running. He's gone.
- 16:44Now, this cornfield was pretty massive.
- 16:47It had not been harvested so the stalks
- 16:48were really tall. [music]
- 16:50And clearly like Waja was on a mission
- 16:52and so June was not about to just chase
- 16:54after him. Instead, he ran back to the
- 16:56car and he grabbed Gwo first. And the
- 16:59two of them went after Waja. However,
- 17:02when they got to the cornfield and
- 17:03actually went inside of it, they quickly
- 17:06realized it was going to be really hard
- 17:08to find anything in this cornfield. I
- 17:10mean, the stalks are so thick and tall.
- 17:12It's so dense. I mean, every step was so
- 17:15slow and difficult. And they're calling
- 17:17out for Waeja, but there's no response.
- 17:20And so, after several minutes of only
- 17:21moving, you know, like 10-15 ft or so
- 17:23into this cornfield, making no progress,
- 17:26the two of them are like, "What happened
- 17:28to him? Like, either the ghost got him,
- 17:31or like maybe he's in hiding somewhere.
- 17:34Maybe he's convinced that the ghost is
- 17:35nearby, and he's just being quiet, and
- 17:37he's in hiding, and he's he's somewhere
- 17:39in this cornfield, but but we got to
- 17:40find him."
- 17:41And so, the two friends, they they back
- 17:43out of the cornfield, and they end up
- 17:45calling a bunch of their friends to meet
- 17:46them at this cornfield, and help them
- 17:49look for Waeja. So, all these friends,
- 17:51they eventually arrive, and all day and
- 17:54into the night, these friends search
- 17:56this cornfield. They're looking
- 17:57everywhere for Waeja. Everyone's
- 17:59screaming his name,
- 18:01but there's no sign of him. Three days
- 18:03later, and Waeja still had not been
- 18:06found.
- 18:07Now, by this point, the parents, Waeja's
- 18:09parents, had been told. They had told
- 18:11police. Police had looked for Waeja, but
- 18:13there was no sign of him.
- 18:15I mean, they were still out looking for
- 18:16him, but right now, like the talk of the
- 18:18town was, "Where is Waeja?" Nobody knew.
- 18:22And so, on this day, 3 days after the
- 18:25day that Waeja went missing, June was
- 18:27sitting in his room, just feeling
- 18:28miserable. All he can think about is his
- 18:31friend and what happened to him. Like,
- 18:33you know, he ran off after presumably
- 18:35seeing this ghost. Like, did the ghost
- 18:37get him? Like, all these horrible
- 18:39thoughts are are going through his head.
- 18:42And June, as he's sitting in his room,
- 18:43he hears his mom call out to him,
- 18:45telling him there's a visitor.
- 18:47And so, June, he gets up, he leaves his
- 18:49room, he goes to the front of the house,
- 18:51and he sees a police officer standing in
- 18:53the doorway. And this officer would tell
- 18:55June and his mother that they had found
- 18:57Waeja, and he was dead. [music]
- 18:59His body was found in a lake that was
- 19:01not far from the cemetery, and that he
- 19:04had drowned. June is completely shocked.
- 19:06I mean, on the one hand, he sort of was
- 19:09expecting bad news at this point. I
- 19:10mean, basically everybody was, but to
- 19:13hear that his friend was dead was just
- 19:15horrific. And he, you know, really
- 19:17struggled to keep back tears, but
- 19:19[music] you know, before he could really
- 19:20even react to this, the officer went on
- 19:23to say that, you know, June,
- 19:25we spoke to Weija's parents and they
- 19:27they told us that you and Guo were with
- 19:30their son last, that you were with him
- 19:32before he vanished. And so, we just want
- 19:34you to tell us, you know, now that we
- 19:36know he passed away, that he drowned, we
- 19:39want to know what happened. What did you
- 19:40see? Like, what led to him drowning? And
- 19:43June, he just launched into the most
- 19:45detailed version of the story he could
- 19:47possibly think of.
- 19:48>> [music]
- 19:49>> He took the officer all the way back to
- 19:51them at the internet cafe, you know,
- 19:53playing computer games. They decide
- 19:55they're going to stay out all night.
- 19:56They They go outside. They're having a
- 19:58smoke. They're talking about what
- 19:59they're going to do. They decide they're
- 20:00going to get in the car and just drive
- 20:02around. They're driving around on the
- 20:03night of this this ghost festival. They
- 20:05see this woman. They think it's a ghost.
- 20:08Like, he went through this whole
- 20:09rendition of of the ghost being really
- 20:11central to the story and how the next
- 20:14day June's mom had like said, "Oh, go
- 20:16burn ghost money in the cemetery to to
- 20:19protect yourself from the spirits." They
- 20:21go to the cemetery and they're burning
- 20:23the ghost money, but then Weija, he gets
- 20:25so scared. June's convinced it's cuz he
- 20:27sees the ghost again, this woman, and he
- 20:29takes off running into the the
- 20:31cornfield. So, he tells the officer like
- 20:33every little detail. And he knew that
- 20:35even in a place like this, where people
- 20:37did for the most part believe in ghosts,
- 20:40he knew his story like really hinged on
- 20:43a ghost made Weija do this. And he knew
- 20:45that it was like totally preposterous in
- 20:47some ways, but he's he thinks he's
- 20:49telling him the truth.
- 20:51And so, he tells the officer all this
- 20:52stuff.
- 20:53And the officer's just staring at him.
- 20:55And he's he's clearly very skeptical.
- 20:58>> [music]
- 20:58>> And then at some point, after June is
- 21:00done and he's just waiting for the
- 21:01officer,
- 21:03the officer looks at him and he asks him
- 21:05one question
- 21:07that once June answers, once he answers
- 21:09honestly
- 21:10it completely explains everything that
- 21:13[music] happened. It would turn out that
- 21:15woman who was sitting in the middle of
- 21:16the road that sort of became the
- 21:18centerpiece of this whole ordeal
- 21:20was not a ghost. In fact, she wasn't
- 21:22even real. Because the three friends,
- 21:25June, Guo, and Weija on the night they
- 21:29decided to have their big night, they're
- 21:30going to stay out all night when they
- 21:32went out for a smoke they didn't smoke
- 21:34cigarettes. They smoked methamphetamine
- 21:37which can cause you to hallucinate. And
- 21:39so they were high on meth driving around
- 21:42and hallucinated that woman. But they
- 21:43all, you know, believed they saw it and
- 21:46it felt so real and it was in the same
- 21:48night as this annual ghost festival that
- 21:50it felt so real that even the next day
- 21:52when they were no longer high they still
- 21:55believed they had seen it. And then
- 21:56June's mom confirmed, yep, that was a
- 21:58ghost because she believes in ghosts.
- 22:01And so they set out to the cemetery and
- 22:02they're going to, you know, burn this
- 22:04ghost money to to to save themselves
- 22:06from these evil spirits. And what do
- 22:08they do before they head out to the
- 22:10cemetery? They smoke more meth. And
- 22:13Weija, he has another hallucination. He
- 22:15thinks he sees the ghost, ran into the
- 22:17cornfield, not realizing that deep in
- 22:19the cornfield was a lake. He fell into
- 22:22it and [music] he was high on meth and
- 22:24didn't know how to swim.
- 22:26And so he drowned.
- 22:44On the night of August 28th, 2004 a
- 22:4721-year-old named John Hutcheson leaned
- 22:50over a bar in Marietta, Georgia and
- 22:52asked the bartender for another beer.
- 22:54John by this point had completely lost
- 22:56track of how many drinks he had had in
- 22:58the past few hours but he was sure it
- 23:01had been a lot because by this point the
- 23:03room was starting to spin. However, he
- 23:05had no plans to stop drinking anytime
- 23:07soon. After all, it was only midnight,
- 23:10which was very early for John. And he
- 23:12was having a great time, and the bar was
- 23:14packed, and there was loud music
- 23:16playing, and John was also on a winning
- 23:18streak playing pool. And so, while he
- 23:20waited for his beer, John looked over at
- 23:22the pool table. He'd left his best
- 23:24friend Frankie there a few minutes ago,
- 23:26but now, as he was looking over there,
- 23:29he didn't see Frankie anymore. So, John
- 23:31and Frankie had been very close ever
- 23:33since high school,
- 23:34>> [music]
- 23:34>> and this night out they were having was
- 23:36sort of like a a typical Saturday for
- 23:38them.
- 23:39Every week they would meet at this bar,
- 23:40[music] they would get exceptionally
- 23:42drunk, and they would basically stay out
- 23:44all night. But, on this night, they were
- 23:47both a lot drunker than usual. And now
- 23:50Frankie was gone. And so, as John very
- 23:53drunkenly looked around the bar to see
- 23:54if he could find Frankie, he noticed a
- 23:57girl he didn't recognize at the end of
- 23:59the bar. She was very cute,
- 24:01>> [music]
- 24:01>> and she appeared to be smiling at him.
- 24:03And so, you know, John sees her and
- 24:05forgets all about his friend Frankie
- 24:07being gone, and just smiles back at this
- 24:09girl, and then a moment later the
- 24:10bartender hands him his beer, and you
- 24:12know, John's feeling really confident.
- 24:14He takes his beer, and he begins walking
- 24:16towards this girl. However, before he
- 24:19actually reached her, he felt a hand on
- 24:21his arm,
- 24:22>> [music]
- 24:22>> and he turned to see Frankie,
- 24:25who looked just awful.
- 24:27>> [music]
- 24:27>> He looked so pale, he he smelled like
- 24:30vomit,
- 24:31and Frankie told John, you know, as well
- 24:33as he could, cuz he's so drunk, he's
- 24:34mumbling everything. He just said he he
- 24:36felt horrible, and and it was time to
- 24:39go. Now, John was really disappointed,
- 24:41because even though he was really,
- 24:42really drunk, too,
- 24:44he wasn't as bad as Frankie. Like, John
- 24:46had not reached the nauseous and
- 24:48vomiting phase of extreme intoxication,
- 24:50and so he's thinking, "Man, like, there
- 24:52are a couple more hours till closing,
- 24:54and I really want to talk to this girl."
- 24:56But, he was Frankie's ride, and Frankie
- 24:59had to go home, clearly. And so, if he
- 25:01was going home,
- 25:02John had to go home, too. So, John just
- 25:05chugged his beer, put it back on the
- 25:06bar, and then he turned and kind of
- 25:08waved at the girl, being like, "Sorry, I
- 25:10got to go."
- 25:11And then John pulled his car keys out of
- 25:14his pocket. And so, John and Frankie,
- 25:16they head outside to the parking lot,
- 25:18and John goes to his truck, and he
- 25:20climbs into the driver's seat. And as
- 25:22he's fumbling with the keys to to start
- 25:24the car, Frankie [music]
- 25:26had gone around to the other side and
- 25:28stumbled his way into the passenger
- 25:29seat. And even though he's like wrecked
- 25:31drunk, [music] he's like totally out of
- 25:33it, Frankie looks over at John and sees
- 25:35him unable to even start the car, and
- 25:37he's like, "Hey, are you sure you're
- 25:39good to drive?" And John looks over at
- 25:41Frankie, and he's like, "Of course, I'm
- 25:42just fine. I do this every single week.
- 25:44We always get home safe." And so, at
- 25:46this point, Frankie's like, "All right,
- 25:47you know, whatever. Let's just go."
- 25:49And so, John, he eventually manages to
- 25:52turn the car on, he throws it in gear,
- 25:55and he began to pull out of the parking
- 25:56lot onto the road, but as he did, I
- 25:58mean, he really had to squint his eyes
- 26:00just to see the road clearly. I mean,
- 26:02his whole world is totally spinning
- 26:04because of how intoxicated he was.
- 26:07And then as soon as he actually began
- 26:08driving down the main road on the way
- 26:10home, the first thing he did is he's
- 26:11like hitting the curb and swerving back
- 26:14onto the road, but he was, you know,
- 26:15basically steady, you know, he's totally
- 26:17wasted, but he's
- 26:18basically hanging on. And then the rest
- 26:20of the drive was just a blur. And John
- 26:22was white-knuckling it the rest of the
- 26:23way, you know, he's driving along, he
- 26:25sees the gas station that he always
- 26:28passed on the way home, so that's a
- 26:29familiar landmark, he's going the right
- 26:31way. He eventually passes a familiar
- 26:33billboard, but then at some point his
- 26:35eyes like snap back into focus because
- 26:37he's
- 26:37>> [music]
- 26:37>> he realizes he's swerving off the road
- 26:39onto the shoulder, but he swerves back
- 26:41just in time to avoid hitting a
- 26:42telephone pole.
- 26:44And he's like, "Oh, man, like I got
- 26:46this. I stay focused." And then somehow,
- 26:48someway, eventually, he winds up in
- 26:51front of Frankie's house. And so he
- 26:53[music] he drops his friend off and then
- 26:55back on the road he goes, you know,
- 26:56navigating now at this point like with
- 26:58one eye shot. And he eventually finds
- 27:01his way to his parents' house where he
- 27:02was staying. [music] And from there he
- 27:04climbed out of his car, he walked up the
- 27:06driveway, he unlocked the front door,
- 27:08and then stumbled up to his room where
- 27:10he immediately just fell into his bed
- 27:13and passed out. The next thing John
- 27:14knew, he heard voices and then he felt
- 27:17somebody grab his arm and shake him. And
- 27:19then when he opened his eyes, his vision
- 27:20was very blurry but eventually it came
- 27:23into focus and he saw that he was
- 27:25clearly in his bedroom, in his bed, on
- 27:27top of his blankets, but he had no idea
- 27:29how he got there. He looked down and
- 27:31noticed he was still wearing the same
- 27:33clothes he had worn the night before,
- 27:35but they were sticky and they were
- 27:36dirty.
- 27:38And then there were also these two
- 27:39figures who were standing over him
- 27:40repeating his name over and over again
- 27:43almost angrily. John looked at these two
- 27:45and didn't really know who they were,
- 27:46but then he noticed they were both
- 27:49wearing matching uniforms. They were
- 27:51police officers. And these officers were
- 27:53very angrily asking John what happened
- 27:57last night. Like what did you do? What
- 27:59happened the night before?
- 28:02But John, like he still is sort of like
- 28:05trying to figure out what's even going
- 28:06on. He really doesn't have a good memory
- 28:08of anything that happened the night
- 28:09before. I mean, all he can just quickly
- 28:11remember is like he was at that bar, he
- 28:14he saw that girl, he drove Frankie home,
- 28:16like he knew he was drunk on the ride
- 28:18home, but he got home. Like he didn't
- 28:20know what else they were trying to
- 28:22figure out about what happened the night
- 28:23before.
- 28:24>> [music]
- 28:25>> And so when he finally opened his mouth
- 28:27to be like, what is going on? Because he
- 28:29was still basically drunk, it just came
- 28:32out of his mouth like this incoherent
- 28:33babbling. He's like, what what's going
- 28:35on here?
- 28:36>> [music]
- 28:36>> And the two officers, they were just
- 28:38over it and they just grabbed John and
- 28:40literally pulled him out of the bed.
- 28:42They whipped his hands behind his back,
- 28:44they handcuffed him, and John, who's
- 28:46like, what is happening?" They lead him
- 28:48out of his bedroom, downstairs, past his
- 28:51mom and dad, who are staring at him
- 28:52like, "What is going on?" And even
- 28:54though John, again, is basically like
- 28:56borderline incoherent, you know, in
- 28:58passing by his parents, he's hoping
- 29:00they're going to be like, "Hey officers,
- 29:02>> [music]
- 29:02>> why are you arresting my son?" But
- 29:04instead, as he's led past them, he looks
- 29:06at his mom and dad, and they're not
- 29:08about to put up some fight. They're
- 29:09crying. They're holding each other and
- 29:11crying. Like they clearly know something
- 29:13bad has happened, and they can't stop
- 29:15what's happening to their son. And so
- 29:17the officers, they walk John in
- 29:19handcuffs out the front door, and they
- 29:21walk him over to his truck in the
- 29:22driveway. And when they got there, the
- 29:25officers just stopped and gestured for
- 29:27John to
- 29:28have a look inside.
- 29:30And so John, he's sort of looking at the
- 29:31officers like, "Okay, what's what's
- 29:33going on with my truck?" And he turned,
- 29:35and he just sort of squinted and and
- 29:37looked through the window into the car,
- 29:40and there was this large object in the
- 29:41passenger seat that he didn't remember
- 29:43being there the night before.
- 29:45Then as he as he looked more closely,
- 29:48he realized with horror what it was. So,
- 29:51the night before, John did drive when he
- 29:54absolutely should not have. He was
- 29:56clearly way past the legal limit for
- 29:59driving. He should never have been
- 30:00driving. Totally unsafe for others, for
- 30:02him. Shouldn't happen, but he did. He
- 30:05drove.
- 30:06And so he and Frankie, they're they're
- 30:07driving home, and John, in his limited
- 30:10memory, recalled, you know, this sort of
- 30:12like blurry ride home, you know, where
- 30:14basically, as as dangerous as it was, he
- 30:16got them home.
- 30:18But at one point, he remembered almost
- 30:21hitting a telephone pole. He swerved
- 30:23just in time, and he narrowly avoided
- 30:25it. And in some ways, that was true. He
- 30:27did avoid smashing into the telephone
- 30:29pole,
- 30:31but he didn't avoid an incident.
- 30:34So, Frankie, because he was so nauseous
- 30:37from having drank too much, he had his
- 30:39head out the window as they were driving
- 30:41along trying to get some fresh air and
- 30:44when John drove too close to that
- 30:46telephone pole and swerved at the last
- 30:48second, Frankie's head was still out the
- 30:50window and his head was decapitated
- 30:54by one of the tension wires coming off
- 30:56the pole, the tight wire that holds that
- 30:58pole into the ground, one of them. It's
- 31:00like a guillotine and they're speeding
- 31:02past it and Frankie's neck hit the wire,
- 31:05off went his head, [music] but his body
- 31:08remained in the passenger seat of the
- 31:10car
- 31:10>> [music]
- 31:10>> and John was so belligerently drunk that
- 31:12he didn't see he had just killed his
- 31:14friend, nor did he see his friend's body
- 31:16or a part of his body still in his car.
- 31:19And so when John drunkenly arrived at
- 31:22Frankie's house, he was like, "All
- 31:23right, bye." He thought maybe Frankie
- 31:25got out of the car, but clearly he
- 31:27didn't. He was just there, dead, in his
- 31:29passenger seat and then John just drove
- 31:32back to his parents' house and just left
- 31:33the car in the driveway with his
- 31:35friend's body inside and up to his
- 31:37bedroom he went and passed out having no
- 31:40idea what he had just done. A few months
- 31:42later, John would plead guilty to
- 31:43vehicular homicide and he was sentenced
- 31:46to 5 years in prison.
- 31:54Thank you so much for watching today's
