Full transcript
- 0:00In this video, I'll show you how I
- 0:02created these kinds of satisfying 3D
- 0:04satisfying animations. All of these
- 0:06videos have been viewed over 10 million
- 0:08views and they are mainly created using
- 0:10a free CC software called Blender. My
- 0:13content is mainly created using the
- 0:15physics simulation features. Rigid body
- 0:17simulation, soft body simulation, cloth
- 0:20simulation, fluid simulation, hair
- 0:23particle simulation and force fields.
- 0:26These are the physics simulation
- 0:27features most commonly used in Blender.
- 0:30And in this video, I'll explain one of
- 0:32the most basic features, rigid body
- 0:34simulation, [music] in a way that's easy
- 0:36for complete Blender beginners to
- 0:37understand. If there are enough
- 0:39requests, I'm planning to make a series
- 0:41of this Blender physics simulations and
- 0:43explain other simulation features as
- 0:45well. So, if there's a specific video
- 0:48you'd like me to explain, please feel
- 0:50free to leave a comment. Also, I've
- 0:52uploaded my complete Blender project
- 0:54files on a site called Gumroad. So, if
- 0:57you're interested after watching this
- 0:59tutorial, feel free to check them out
- 1:01through the link in the description.
- 1:03Okay, let's begin. You can install
- 1:05Blender from the link in the
- 1:07description, so please download it
- 1:08beforehand. When you open Blender, this
- 1:11is the first screen you'll see. This
- 1:13animation I made includes a very heavy
- 1:16process for your PC, so I'll explain it
- 1:18later as an advanced tutorial. So, first
- 1:21I'll just start by explaining the basic
- 1:23features of rigid body. If you're not a
- 1:25beginner and want to jump straight to
- 1:27the advanced section, please skip to
- 1:28this timestamp. Also, I'll display
- 1:31screen cast keys in the bottom left
- 1:32corner right over here. So, this will
- 1:35let you see which buttons and mouse
- 1:36action I'm using. So, I'm going to start
- 1:39with selecting these default stuff and
- 1:42delete all of them and there's nothing
- 1:44in my Blender area.
- 1:46So, let's press shift A and add a plane
- 1:49object. This is going to act like a
- 1:52ground.
- 1:53Press S key.
- 1:55This is for scaling this stuff. I want
- 1:58to press number pad 10.
- 2:01And this makes this stuff 10 times
- 2:03bigger.
- 2:04And I want to add a cube again with
- 2:07shift A and select this cube.
- 2:10And I want to move this upwards. So,
- 2:13press G to select the cube and move. And
- 2:17I want to just move this as an Z axis.
- 2:21So, press Z and it's going to be moving
- 2:24only in the Z axis.
- 2:26And I'm going to put the cube around
- 2:28here. Next, I want to add a physics in
- 2:31this cube. So, press physics tabs right
- 2:33over here and select rigid body. This
- 2:36one.
- 2:38And this space is the animation timeline
- 2:40on Blender. And if you press the space
- 2:42bar, the animation will start and cube
- 2:44is falling. But, it's going through the
- 2:46ground object. So, I want to also add
- 2:49the rigid body to this ground. And let's
- 2:51start the animation again.
- 2:53Oh my god. The ground and cube is
- 2:56falling together. So, what I have to do
- 2:58is select the ground and change the type
- 3:00to passive.
- 3:02This allows the ground object to stay
- 3:04still during the animation, but just
- 3:06react as a rigid body. So, if you press
- 3:10space bar again, the ground catches the
- 3:12cube. Very nice.
- 3:14So, let's try with another object.
- 3:17Delete the cube and let's add
- 3:21a cone.
- 3:22And I want to place this perfectly on
- 3:25the ground. So, let's press number pad
- 3:27one key to view it from directly in
- 3:30front. So, press G key and Z key to move
- 3:34it only on the Z axis. And if you hold
- 3:36the control key like this and move the
- 3:38mouse, the object snaps neatly to the
- 3:41grid like this. So, put it right over
- 3:44here
- 3:46and it perfectly landed on the ground.
- 3:48So, let's add a torus object like this
- 3:52and press G key, Z key and move it
- 3:55upwards.
- 3:57And let's add rigid body to both of
- 3:59them.
- 4:01And if you hit the space bar,
- 4:04you'll see it's acting weird like this.
- 4:08What's affecting this is the collision
- 4:10type shape.
- 4:12The shape type in the collision settings
- 4:14determines what shape the object behaves
- 4:16as during the rigid body simulation.
- 4:20So, if you select sphere,
- 4:23it acts like a sphere.
- 4:26And if you select cylinder,
- 4:29it acts like a cylinder.
- 4:32So, what is convex hull?
- 4:34In Blender, convex hull is a feature
- 4:37that automatically creates the smallest
- 4:39convex shape enclosing the selected
- 4:41object of vertices. It's easy to imagine
- 4:44the entire surface of the object being
- 4:47wrapped in a hard plastic film.
- 4:49If you wrap this donut in a film, the
- 4:53hole gets filled in like this.
- 4:58So, if you start the animation wrapped
- 5:00in a convex hull,
- 5:03it behaves like this.
- 5:06So, if you want it to behave as a
- 5:08perfectly accurate shape, select the
- 5:10shape type to mesh. And finally, it acts
- 5:14like a perfect donut.
- 5:16However, mesh mode is a little bit heavy
- 5:18on your PC, so use it carefully.
- 5:21On the other hand, convex hull is a very
- 5:24lightweight making it suitable for
- 5:26physics simulations with simple shapes.
- 5:28So, use it flexibly depending on your
- 5:30situation. All right, these are the
- 5:33basic and main functions of rigid body
- 5:35simulation. And by combining and
- 5:37applying the techniques I just
- 5:39explained, we can create that cube tower
- 5:41animation. So, let's jump in and try it.
- 5:44However, if you try running the
- 5:46simulation with this bunch of cubes
- 5:48right away, it will likely become
- 5:50extremely heavy unless you have a fairly
- 5:52powerful computer. Just for a reference,
- 5:55I'll briefly show you my PC specs.
- 5:58Anyway, in this video, we'll start with
- 6:00a small number of cubes first. So,
- 6:03please adjust the amount depending on
- 6:04your PC's performance as you go. So, I'm
- 6:07going to start with creating a ground
- 6:09again. So, press shift A and create a
- 6:11plane. And this time, let's scale it to
- 6:15number pad 15 and make it 15 times
- 6:19bigger. And let's start creating a cube
- 6:22tower first. So, press A and create a
- 6:24cube. And this time, let's scale it to
- 6:300.25.
- 6:33And I want to put this right on the
- 6:36ground. So, you can insert the number
- 6:40to this object info.
- 6:43If you enter 0.25 in the Z location, it
- 6:47will slightly land on the ground.
- 6:51And this is the important part. Watch
- 6:53the object info. The scale is 0.25 right
- 6:57now. So, what I want to do is press
- 6:59control A and apply the scale.
- 7:03In Blender, applying scale resets the
- 7:06object size to one. This prevent issues
- 7:09with physics calculations.
- 7:12So, I want to increase this cube by
- 7:15adding a modifier
- 7:17right here
- 7:19and search for array.
- 7:23This one.
- 7:24All right, look at this. Since the cubes
- 7:26are perfectly attached to each other, so
- 7:29it's hard to tell that there are
- 7:30actually three cubes on here. So, press
- 7:34Z key and select this wireframe mode.
- 7:37Now, you can clearly see that there are
- 7:39three cubes. And then press Z key again
- 7:42to return to solid mode. Since it's
- 7:44still a bit hard to see in solid mode,
- 7:47so let's add a slight bevel to the edges
- 7:50of the cubes. Press tab key to change to
- 7:53edit mode.
- 7:54Or you can just select here.
- 7:57And press control B to bevel these
- 8:01edges.
- 8:02Just a little bit
- 8:04edges like this.
- 8:07Now you can see there are clearly three
- 8:09cubes right here.
- 8:10So I want to increase the number. So
- 8:12let's change the count to, let's see, to
- 8:1510.
- 8:17And also I want to add a cube in the Y
- 8:20direction. So let's duplicate this array
- 8:22modifier.
- 8:27And I want to change the X offset to
- 8:29zero.
- 8:31And Y to one.
- 8:33So there are now 100 cubes right here.
- 8:36So I want to increase
- 8:38also to the Z axis. So duplicate this
- 8:41again.
- 8:43And
- 8:44change the offset Y to zero and offset Z
- 8:48to one.
- 8:50And I want to increase the height of the
- 8:52Z axis. So let's change the count to
- 8:56like 20.
- 8:58Okay, the cube tower is complete. Let's
- 9:00place this into the middle center of the
- 9:02world. So press number pad seven to see
- 9:05it from above.
- 9:07And change it to wireframe.
- 9:10And press G key and move it like this.
- 9:14Let's zoom in and press G key.
- 9:18I'm pressing control shift to slightly
- 9:21move it to the center.
- 9:24Okay.
- 9:25Perfect.
- 9:27At this point, Blender still recognize
- 9:30this object as a single cube. That's
- 9:32because modifiers only change the object
- 9:35visually.
- 9:36They don't actually change the
- 9:38underlying geometry yet.
- 9:40So, what I want to do is apply this
- 9:43array modifier by pressing here or just
- 9:46press control A to apply them.
- 9:50And now Blender recognize all the cubes.
- 9:52Also in the edit mode,
- 9:55I want to push mesh over here
- 9:59and separate it by loose parts.
- 10:03Now we can see the cube layer here
- 10:06all the way down to 2,000 cubes.
- 10:11And one more thing,
- 10:12in the object mode, press object and set
- 10:16origin to geometry.
- 10:19This moves the origin point to the
- 10:21center of each cube. This is also a very
- 10:24important step when working with physics
- 10:27calculation later on.
- 10:29And we won't add a rigid body physics
- 10:31yet in this cube since it's a very heavy
- 10:34process. So,
- 10:36for now, let's save the project here.
- 10:39Press control S to
- 10:41save this project file. You can create a
- 10:44new folder and rename it like rigid body
- 10:47test and save the Blender file inside
- 10:50this folder and rename it like rigid
- 10:52body test
- 10:55and save the Blender file. Next, let's
- 10:57make a slider and a metal ball. So,
- 11:00press shift A and add a cube again
- 11:03and numpad 3 to switch to the side view.
- 11:07And this time let's scale this cube to
- 11:102.5.
- 11:13And press G key to move it right towards
- 11:16here, control shift key and
- 11:20put it neatly right here.
- 11:24Next, I want to add a loop cut over here
- 11:27and over here. So, change it to edit
- 11:30mode and press control R to add a loop
- 11:34cut here.
- 11:35Left click and move it right here.
- 11:40And I want to also add a loop cut right
- 11:42here. So, press control R again and left
- 11:46click and move it down over here.
- 11:51And next, [music]
- 11:52make sure the selection mode is set to
- 11:55edge.
- 11:56Or, you can press two to switch to edge
- 11:59mode.
- 12:01And select this edge and go back to the
- 12:03side view and move the edge like over
- 12:07here.
- 12:10And press control B and create a bevel
- 12:14like this.
- 12:16And drag the middle wheel of the mouse
- 12:19and subdivide these bevels.
- 12:23And left click to confirm.
- 12:27And now go back to the object mode.
- 12:30I want to erase these edge-looking
- 12:32sliders. So, right click and shade auto
- 12:35smooth.
- 12:38Also, I want to add a bevel here. So,
- 12:40this time let's
- 12:42use the modifier. Enter bevel.
- 12:46And I want to increase the segments to
- 12:49five.
- 12:50And here's the nice-looking slider.
- 12:54Let's raise the slider a little bit
- 12:56higher.
- 12:57So, go back to the side view and select
- 13:00these edges, just these edges, and move
- 13:04it to the Z axis. Let's see. Let's move
- 13:09it like over here.
- 13:11All right.
- 13:14So, next, I want to make a metal ball.
- 13:17So, shift A and this time let's create
- 13:20this icosphere.
- 13:23And I want to increase the subdivisions
- 13:26to four.
- 13:29and move it up like this.
- 13:33And replace the cube over here.
- 13:37Maybe a bit more higher.
- 13:40And add shade smooth to make the surface
- 13:42look smoother. Oh, I forgot it. Don't
- 13:45forget to apply the scale of the slider
- 13:48with pressing control A
- 13:50and apply the scale.
- 13:53To make things more exciting, let's set
- 13:55up the final camera angle and add some
- 13:57materials so we can view that screen
- 13:59while working.
- 14:01First, add a camera with shift A
- 14:05and split the view selecting here
- 14:08and move it like here.
- 14:12I want this panel to match the same
- 14:14framing as the final rendered video. On
- 14:17this panel,
- 14:18click view to align active camera to
- 14:22view.
- 14:23By default, it's set to a horizontal
- 14:26layout, so let's switch it to a vertical
- 14:28format.
- 14:30Select the output properties and change
- 14:33the resolution X to 1080 and resolution
- 14:37Y to 1920.
- 14:39This is for the smartphone vertical
- 14:41format
- 14:42>> [music]
- 14:42>> and change this panel to material
- 14:44preview.
- 14:45And we'll continue working with this
- 14:47panel.
- 14:49And I want to add some nice background,
- 14:51so select the plane object and switch it
- 14:54to edit mode, select this edge and press
- 14:57E key and Z key to extrude the edge to
- 15:01the Z axis like this.
- 15:04Next, select this edge
- 15:07and control B to bevel this again
- 15:10like this.
- 15:12And don't forget to shade smooth.
- 15:16Okay, let's change the camera view.
- 15:20On this panel, press N key and select
- 15:23the view panel and click this checkbox
- 15:26camera to view.
- 15:29This makes the current view align with
- 15:31the camera view.
- 15:33So, adjust it to
- 15:36nice looking position like this.
- 15:40Okay, good.
- 15:41The background isn't wide enough, so
- 15:43let's scale it along the X axis. Press S
- 15:47key and X key.
- 15:49Number pad three to scale it three times
- 15:52than the original.
- 15:54Okay, don't forget to unselect the
- 15:56camera to view.
- 16:00So, now even if you move the view, the
- 16:02camera will remain fixed over here.
- 16:07If you press the number pad zero key,
- 16:09you can go back to the camera view.
- 16:12Let's just adjust the view port display
- 16:15and move this pass part out alpha to
- 16:18one, so you can only see the camera
- 16:20view.
- 16:22Okay, let's add the materials to these
- 16:24objects. So, first you select the slider
- 16:27and go to this material properties.
- 16:32Add a new material and rename it like a
- 16:35slider.
- 16:37And you can change the base color right
- 16:39here. So, let's let's select a nice blue
- 16:43color. You can see the material is
- 16:45changing on this view and let's decrease
- 16:48the roughness to 0.2
- 16:52and go back down to the transmission
- 16:55and increase the weight to one.
- 16:58This parameter changes the slider looks
- 17:00kind of like a glass material.
- 17:03So, let's also add a metal material to
- 17:05the sphere.
- 17:06Add a new one and rename it to metal.
- 17:11And this time, let's increase this
- 17:13metallic
- 17:15parameter and change the roughness to
- 17:190.1
- 17:21maybe.
- 17:22Here's the nice looking metal ball.
- 17:24Change the base color little bit darker.
- 17:27And next change the background color.
- 17:30Add a new one and rename it like BG.
- 17:34I want to make this a black looking
- 17:37background.
- 17:39And finally, let's add the cube
- 17:41material.
- 17:42Rename it to cube.
- 17:44And let's change the base color to
- 17:46something like yellow orange thing.
- 17:50And I want to apply this cube material
- 17:53to all of these 2,000 cube towers. So,
- 17:56change it to wireframe mode and from the
- 17:58side view, first select the material
- 18:01changed object and then select all of
- 18:05these 2,000 cubes with the wireframe
- 18:08mode. Press control L key and select
- 18:12this link materials so that the all cube
- 18:15towers change it to the orange color.
- 18:18So, let's make the scene look a bit
- 18:20closer to the final render result.
- 18:23By pressing here render, turn the render
- 18:26engine to cycles.
- 18:28And if your computer have a GPU, select
- 18:31the device to GPU compute.
- 18:34And don't forget to turn on the graphic
- 18:36board checkbox in the system menu of the
- 18:39preferences.
- 18:41And maybe change the max samples to I
- 18:45change it oftenly changes to 256.
- 18:49This makes the render a little bit
- 18:51lighter. Okay, then change this panel to
- 18:55the rendered view.
- 18:57And you'll notice that the scene is too
- 19:00dark.
- 19:01That's because I don't have any light in
- 19:04this Blender scene. So, I want to add a
- 19:06light environment in this Blender scene.
- 19:08>> [music]
- 19:09>> So, go on to this world panel and select
- 19:13this color button and let's try using
- 19:15the sky texture that comes built into
- 19:18Blender.
- 19:19And now you can see the final result
- 19:21view in this panel.
- 19:23It's still a bit too dark, so let's add
- 19:26our own light as well. By pressing shift
- 19:29A, let's select an area light here.
- 19:34So, move it up with this G key and place
- 19:38it like over here. And click this yellow
- 19:40circle button to change direction of the
- 19:44light. So, I want to light up the cube
- 19:46tower,
- 19:47but the light doesn't have enough power.
- 19:49So, let's press this light bulb panel
- 19:53and change the power to like 5,000.
- 19:57Maybe 10,000 is better.
- 20:00Move it up, adjust the light direction a
- 20:03little bit,
- 20:04and that looks better.
- 20:06Okay, now it's finally time to apply the
- 20:08physics simulation. From this point on,
- 20:11there will be a lot of heavy processing,
- 20:13so make sure to save your project
- 20:15frequently by pressing control S. I hope
- 20:19your Blender won't crash.
- 20:21So, let's add the background a passive
- 20:24rigid body effect and don't forget to
- 20:26change the shape type to mesh.
- 20:30And also I want to add a rigid body type
- 20:33passive to the slider.
- 20:35Change the shape type to mesh.
- 20:38And also I want to add a rigid body to
- 20:41this metal ball, but this time type
- 20:43active.
- 20:44And maybe changing the shape type to
- 20:46sphere will be nice.
- 20:48And finally, let's add a rigid body to
- 20:52all of these 2,000 cubes. So, select one
- 20:55of the cube
- 20:56and add a rigid body and the type of
- 20:59course is active and the shape type
- 21:01maybe the box will be nice.
- 21:05And let's change the settings of this
- 21:07dynamics menu
- 21:09over here
- 21:11and check this deactivation checkbox and
- 21:15start deactivated.
- 21:18This makes the cube start reacting
- 21:20physically at the exact moment the metal
- 21:22ball hits them.
- 21:23And after selecting rigid body applied
- 21:27cube, select all of these 2,000 cubes
- 21:32with the wireframe mode.
- 21:34And on the object tab, select rigid body
- 21:38and copy from active.
- 21:41And now we have rigid body applied to
- 21:43all of these 2,000 cubes.
- 21:46And also uncheck this show overlays and
- 21:50hide unnecessary elements like the
- 21:52lights and grid from this panel.
- 21:55And don't forget to save the Blender
- 21:57file before you start the animation and
- 21:59let's press space key to start the
- 22:02animation.
- 22:07Maybe the metal ball wasn't heavy
- 22:08enough, so the cube tower probably
- 22:11didn't collapse very much. So let's
- 22:12change the metal ball weight.
- 22:15On the physics tabs, change this mass to
- 22:18like 1,000 kg
- 22:21and press space again to start the
- 22:24simulation.
- 22:26And now you can see the block tower
- 22:28collapse.
- 22:33Okay, this is very satisfying and
- 22:35exciting.
- 22:37Let's change the cube color a little bit
- 22:39darker.
- 22:43And maybe adding more light power.
- 22:51Yeah, I think it looks better.
- 22:55And finally, I want to render this as a
- 22:57movie file.
- 22:59So press this output tab.
- 23:03Go back down to this output menu and you
- 23:06can change the directory wherever you
- 23:08want to output the video file and change
- 23:11the media type to video.
- 23:14And now I recommend to change the
- 23:15container to MPEG-4.
- 23:17I think the MP4 file is easy to handle
- 23:20it. And maybe changing the render
- 23:22properties to make it more visualized.
- 23:25>> [music]
- 23:25>> Inside this color management menu, I
- 23:28recommend to change the look to medium
- 23:31high contrast or high contrast,
- 23:34whichever you prefer. I personally like
- 23:36the high contrast movie because it looks
- 23:38very nice.
- 23:40Let's render the final results. So,
- 23:42press render and render animation.
- 23:45And now the render starts. It will take
- 23:48time depending on your PC spec.
- 23:51Let's wait for a while.
- 23:52So, the rendering is done and this is
- 23:55the final rendered video. It took around
- 23:5840 or 50 minutes on my PC. So, I hope
- 24:02your PC hasn't exploded.
- 24:05Okay, that's it for this tutorial. Try
- 24:08changing the size and weight of the
- 24:09metal ball and experiment with different
- 24:11settings. Since this tutorial was aimed
- 24:14at beginners, I simplified a lot of
- 24:16things such as the number of cubes and
- 24:19the materials. However, as I mentioned
- 24:21at the beginning, I've uploaded the
- 24:23actual Blender project files from my
- 24:25videos to Gumroad. So, be sure to check
- 24:28them out. I also get a lot of questions
- 24:31about how I add sound effects to my
- 24:33videos. So, if this video gets a good
- 24:35response, I'll make a tutorial video
- 24:38about sound design as well. Please leave
- 24:40a like, comment, and subscribe to the
- 24:42channel. See you again.
