Full transcript
- 0:00So, my favorite sad boys,
- 0:03>> just the best guys.
- 0:05Such a powerful and energetic live show.
- 0:09Beautiful post rock band from from
- 0:10Sydney. Um, had the pleasure of playing
- 0:13with them over the years and it's it's
- 0:15been really interesting seeing the new
- 0:16style they've been developing. Um, bunch
- 0:19of really great guys producing beautiful
- 0:21music.
- 0:22>> Really genuine guys and they're
- 0:24great music. Always put on a good show,
- 0:27too. I think they're great because they
- 0:29are sort of like if you want to hear
- 0:30like a post rock band, that's the go-to.
- 0:33>> They're a bunch of bloody Lacans. Um
- 0:35I've had very many good nights hanging
- 0:38out with them. They're brothers. They're
- 0:39like colleagues. Um you know, they're
- 0:41just mates and it's been great to play a
- 0:44few shows along the way.
- 0:45>> Penri
- 0:48are like the darling young boys. I feel
- 0:52they've come along. They've come along
- 0:53and just like really taken this pure
- 0:56post rock approach. Big energy. Um big
- 1:00sound. Yeah. Suriri fun.
- 1:02>> Sieri. Yep. I've seen them in um some
- 1:05small shows and some some larger stage.
- 1:08They are just um apart from just being
- 1:11really lovely guys, they are really they
- 1:15have some such beautiful music and uh
- 1:18they really have got some of the the not
- 1:21the the the better melodies of of a lot
- 1:23of bands and the way they interact and
- 1:26the the things that they try and
- 1:28experiment with. So you'll get different
- 1:30sounds on an album and they're just so
- 1:32good live. They're just really
- 1:35professional and uh yeah for yeah really
- 1:39good.
- 1:39>> Soul one of those bands I got their EP
- 1:43in my pigeon hole at PBS and it was the
- 1:45first thing that came into my pigeon
- 1:47hole that I played on air and it was
- 1:50quite it was quite mind-blowing to me
- 1:52that that there was something that good
- 1:53that just arrived in my pigeon hole. It
- 1:56was it was quite it was quite a moment.
- 1:59There have been quite a few things over
- 2:00the years but that was the first one.
- 2:02Yeah. Yeah,
- 2:03>> holds a special grace.
- 2:04>> Yeah, I got some absolute jaws as well.
- 2:06So,
- 2:08>> it's a beautiful thing.
- 2:10>> I love their approach to melody. Um,
- 2:13they've definitely they've evolved a
- 2:15lot. I think they've gotten a little bit
- 2:17it's like there's there's like some some
- 2:19harder edge to their sound now. And I
- 2:20don't quite know what it is. I don't
- 2:22know if something's changed uh in in in
- 2:25in either how they're writing or or
- 2:27whatever, but I remember the last time I
- 2:29saw them, there was this Yeah, there was
- 2:30this slightly more aggressive edge, but
- 2:32there's still this kind of prettiness in
- 2:33in in the melodies and things that they
- 2:35they do. So, um yeah, really cool. So,
- 2:41that's like a really fun but really
- 2:44blissful band at the same time. It's
- 2:46it's pretty special what they do.
- 2:49>> Nice guys.
- 2:51I saw them a few hours ago. I saw them.
- 2:55>> We just met the obviously guys last
- 2:57night and they were uh really really
- 2:59really nice guys. Great band, great
- 3:01music and uh we're having a just the
- 3:04nicest people. Really having just a
- 3:07great time have uh been on the road with
- 3:08the guys. Yeah,
- 3:09>> I think they are woefully
- 3:12underappreciated. They deserve so much
- 3:14more within our scene. And um on top of
- 3:17that, they're just great dudes. Yeah.
- 3:19and we played with them in Sydney
- 3:21>> at the Vanguard which was awesome.
- 3:24>> Um they have insane stage presence and
- 3:27some really cool music. So it was cool
- 3:28to just sit back and study them and
- 3:31steal what they do for what we do.
- 3:33>> Uh Suri actually literally down the road
- 3:35from us. They're probably closest to us
- 3:38in location. Initially when we started
- 3:40when I never started we had the same
- 3:41postcode. Uh so and we've known we've kn
- 3:46for years. Yeah. new he known since he
- 3:48since since he since he was at school.
- 3:50>> So yeah, um they they're probably the
- 3:53closest and we played with them quite a
- 3:56lot.
- 3:56>> Yeah, they're been the ones that sort of
- 3:58played out here in Western Sydney the
- 4:00most with us. So
- 4:01>> I love Sier from the beginning from like
- 4:03we saw them at Excelsia. We I we played
- 4:06with them um like really early on and
- 4:09they just done their um their like
- 4:11sampler or I don't know if it has a
- 4:14name.
- 4:14>> No house EP. No, before before No House,
- 4:16it was the little um like like three
- 4:19tracks or something. Okay.
- 4:20>> And it was her little like apple on the
- 4:22cover.
- 4:23>> I can't remember if it had a name. Um I
- 4:26probably still got that CD somewhere,
- 4:27but uh it was it was really great. It
- 4:30was like the the the combination of
- 4:32sounds they had and and like I could see
- 4:35or I could hear some of the same
- 4:36influences that we had musically um but
- 4:40being sort of like
- 4:42coming through in a in a different way.
- 4:44Um, and and that was before they did the
- 4:48the EP. And then we're hearing those
- 4:51those tracks um live for the first time
- 4:54as I was sort of just written them and
- 4:55working them out and stuff and and they
- 4:57sounded so great. And then they brought
- 4:58out the EP and
- 5:00>> Ziri are amazing dudes, great musicians.
- 5:03Um, I was so excited when they came on
- 5:06the scene because they were the band
- 5:07that was most similar to us. They were
- 5:10our brothers, they were our children,
- 5:11they were our family. to play gigs
- 5:13together was fantastic. To watch them
- 5:15grow has been unbelievable. Um, I'm
- 5:18extremely proud of them. I'm I'm one of
- 5:20their biggest fans and I always will be.
- 5:49Heat up
- 5:53here.
- 6:19Heat up
- 6:24here.
- 6:38Hello, I'm Andrew from Sulkiri.
- 6:40>> Hi, my name is Ryan and I'm also from
- 6:42Suli.
- 6:43>> Hello. Um, my name is Nick. Um, I play
- 6:45drums and keyboard and glocken spiel um
- 6:49in a band called Sieri.
- 6:50>> I'm Adam and play guitar in Sier.
- 6:58By the letter of the law, I'd call it
- 6:59post rock, but um it's kind of a mash of
- 7:02lots of lots of different things. Um
- 7:06I it would you say instrumental rock,
- 7:09experimental rock. Um people have some
- 7:12people have said experimental pop. It's
- 7:14got elements of pop. Um and it's I think
- 7:16it's just a a gumbo of of all the kind
- 7:19of things we like. I don't think we like
- 7:20the same things. We started off liking
- 7:22post rock and thought we'll do play post
- 7:24rock and then it's kind of stuck with us
- 7:27and so we we we drift off and bring in
- 7:31things that we really want to bring in
- 7:32and I think that's basically it by the
- 7:35letter of the law post rock.
- 7:36>> Even when they were a trio they still
- 7:38packed a huge punch. Nick is has got
- 7:41like such a heavy heavy left hand on the
- 7:45snare drum which I love. And Piery and
- 7:48Moz like they always bring it live.
- 7:50>> Yeah. I think we probably should say go
- 7:52with the uh we don't have a vocalist. So
- 7:54that's probably the first so
- 7:57>> the first red flag.
- 7:58>> Yeah. So yeah, we don't have a vocalist.
- 8:00And I think the big thing for us, Nick
- 8:02touched upon it earlier was that uh pop
- 8:06music in a way like we kind of approach
- 8:09uh post rock with more immediate rather
- 8:11than these long builds, long crescendos.
- 8:14Our songs typically around the four to
- 8:16five minute mark. We don't like to mess
- 8:17about. We're getting straight to the
- 8:19idea and then moving on to the next. Um
- 8:21I believe
- 8:23Matt Kelly from Wheel Sea said we're
- 8:25like the Blink 182 of of post rock.
- 8:28Yeah. Um so I don't know if that was a
- 8:30good thing like we don't can't play our
- 8:31instruments or not.
- 8:36Not post rock. Um no joking. Um, I don't
- 8:41know, from a drumming perspective, a lot
- 8:43of the stuff that I like as a drummer
- 8:46and the way that I kind of play is like
- 8:48it's either soul music or um I found
- 8:52more and more um in the in in recent
- 8:54years like
- 8:57um like elements of like emo post punk.
- 9:02Like I was like I I was listening to
- 9:05Fallout Boy the other day. I'm like why
- 9:06do I play similar stuff to him? So, I've
- 9:09realized it's just kind of infiltrated.
- 9:11Not not necessarily. I don't listen
- 9:12listen to them particularly, but like
- 9:15yeah, things that aren't post rock are
- 9:17the things that influence me more. Um,
- 9:19someone else might have a better answer
- 9:20than me.
- 9:21>> I feel like like we all like similar
- 9:23music, but what influences our
- 9:25songwriting I think is generally quite
- 9:27different. Like like Nick would say,
- 9:29"Oh, I was influenced by this and I that
- 9:32wouldn't have entered my mind when I'm
- 9:33writing a part." So, and and and similar
- 9:36to what Nick was saying, I think for the
- 9:38most part, we're not really drawing from
- 9:39post rock as the the stereotypical genre
- 9:42as much in the last few albums. So, I
- 9:45feel like like to think that that has
- 9:47broadened our sound and made us a bit
- 9:49more unique hopefully.
- 9:51>> I think the big thing for me for
- 9:52songwriting is and you know, not to get
- 9:54an emotional level, but yeah, this is
- 9:56like a close group of friends that you
- 9:58know, write music because of friendship.
- 10:01So, um, yeah, for me it's just, um, you
- 10:04know, be in the room with people that
- 10:05you really enjoy being around.
- 10:09>> Much muchness of what the guys said.
- 10:11Fourth answer. Um, yeah, I mean, there's
- 10:13a there's an array of I mean, a range
- 10:16of, um, influences, I guess, ranging
- 10:20from post rock right through the metal
- 10:22um, pop as well. more recently, you
- 10:25know, like shoe gazy stuff, you know,
- 10:26there's always elements of Radio Head in
- 10:28every bit of music, but yeah, it's um
- 10:31yeah, we're all different. We all like
- 10:32different music, which is which is
- 10:33probably evident in the parts we write
- 10:35and bring to the table. Um but then I
- 10:37think where we work well is that we all
- 10:39just jump onto that idea. No one kind of
- 10:41goes, "Oh, that's I want to take it this
- 10:43way." We kind of just go with it. Um and
- 10:45yeah, to PC's point, short, sharp, and
- 10:47sweet.
- 10:53We formed as a
- 10:56as a fourpiece without Ryan, but we had
- 10:58a singer back in 2006. Now that was like
- 11:02our first ever band and for some reason
- 11:03we had the name Soul Ciri and we played
- 11:06under that banner, but we sounded like a
- 11:09I guess like radio rock fighters.
- 11:13>> Yeah. Kind of like a new metal radio
- 11:15rock stuff. Like we were still learning
- 11:16how to play instruments, still learning
- 11:17how to be in a band. And that's how the
- 11:19band originally formed even though its
- 11:21final form or this current form is much
- 11:24different to what it started as. Yeah.
- 11:26Started listening to a lot of Isis the
- 11:29band and Laura from Melbourne. And that
- 11:31kind of turned my head a bit and
- 11:32thought, you know, those guys or those
- 11:35bands, sorry, have vocalists, but um
- 11:38it's the yeah, the the kind of the
- 11:41atmosphere they create with their music
- 11:42was something something new to me and I
- 11:43was like, "Wow, this is incredible."
- 11:45>> Yeah, it does feel like a long time, but
- 11:47I feel that Yeah. Look, there was a bit
- 11:49of a, you know, a collective
- 11:51understanding of what this sound should
- 11:53be. I think if you had your time again,
- 11:54we probably would have like drew a line
- 11:57through what that previous time was and
- 12:00then called it something different, but
- 12:01we never did. So like I think the band
- 12:03really formed in 2008, 2009 when we
- 12:07started making what would you call
- 12:09instrumental Prague post rock music. So
- 12:12yeah, the formative years were ra just
- 12:14kind of understanding who we are as
- 12:16people, learning our instruments and
- 12:18then you know kicking people out that
- 12:20weren't really on the same boat.
- 12:27Yeah. So, I guess um our producer, a guy
- 12:31that's produces for a long time, Dax
- 12:32Lineier, not too sure if he's been
- 12:35brought up before, but Dax has produced
- 12:36our our first EP and then he's since
- 12:40recently relocated to London, but he
- 12:43then was still involved in our last
- 12:44record that was released um in 2020 from
- 12:47a mixing point of view. Um yeah, so Dax
- 12:50has been someone that's um yeah, been
- 12:53around the band for a long time. And
- 12:54then in addition to that, Mike Solo
- 12:56obviously, which is the purpose of this
- 12:58documentary. Yeah. People like Brett
- 13:00Tolles who's always mixed us, Michael
- 13:01Ta. Um, but the consistent players have
- 13:04been, yeah, obviously the four of us,
- 13:06but also Dax Liier and Mike Solo.
- 13:10This guy called James from the pit. He's
- 13:12helped us out in recent terms as well.
- 13:20>> Yeah. I think it was around 2010 they
- 13:22formed around that time and we saw it
- 13:25through MySpace had a page that was on
- 13:27the Oprog forums and um yeah associated
- 13:31myself with like oh birds robe that's
- 13:33something that we need to get on but
- 13:34realized as a band that we had to do a
- 13:37bet to get to that point and by chance
- 13:40we had a show at the Excelsia Hotel in
- 13:43Surrey Hills and a gentleman by the name
- 13:45of Alex Tulllet was at that show and you
- 13:48know unknowing to us at the time saw us
- 13:51liked us and said, "Hey, I'm Alex Tull
- 13:53from Birds Rope. You should do a show
- 13:54together at some point." And we a bit
- 13:56giddy at that moment. We're like, "Oh my
- 13:58god, that's um something we've been
- 14:00trying to do." Um yeah, so that was the
- 14:01first time we came aware. And the first
- 14:03time we did a show with Birds Road was
- 14:06Featherfest at Annadal Hotel. And I
- 14:09remember the subject line, it was an
- 14:11email sent to me. I was at uni and it
- 14:13was the day before the festival. I think
- 14:15a band pulled out. I can't remember who
- 14:16it was. And the subject line was, "I
- 14:19know it's late notice, but dot dot dot
- 14:21dot." Open the email. Can you play
- 14:22Febfest tomorrow at like 1:00 in the
- 14:25afternoon? We're like, "Yeah, of
- 14:26course." And then, yeah, within 12
- 14:28hours, we're at the show.
- 14:30>> I'm pretty sure Tullet was when we had
- 14:34the first conversation as a band, I
- 14:35guess, when Birds Ro first said, "Oh,
- 14:37you know, you guys were pretty good.
- 14:38We'd like you to play a show." I'm
- 14:40pretty sure it was I was talking to
- 14:41Tullet at the time, and I thought our
- 14:44Christmases had all come at once. So
- 14:46yeah, I've vivid memories of that and um
- 14:49yeah, respect for him at the time as as
- 14:51well as as Mike, you know, starting this
- 14:53whole thing. Um yeah, I remember that
- 14:55moment. So
- 15:00I remember seeing Pirate and thinking,
- 15:02whoa, that's a real band. And then we're
- 15:04like, yeah, we're still, you know,
- 15:06struggling to get through a set. But uh
- 15:08yeah, Pirate, Panzer Queen, uh there's a
- 15:11obviously Sick Makes Waves, they were
- 15:13kind of the leading lights of Birds Ro,
- 15:15Captain Kickass, and the Awesomes, like
- 15:17you know, when you when you name your
- 15:18band that, like that's a certain
- 15:20statement and you got a lot to live up
- 15:21and yeah, they definitely delivered.
- 15:23That's yeah, that's a bit of a throwback
- 15:25those bands. I believe they called
- 15:26Squid, like this sci-fi rock band. And I
- 15:29remember thinking like, you know, our
- 15:31friends would be saying, "Oh, you got no
- 15:32vocalist. That's really weird." And then
- 15:34you come on these birds robe shows and
- 15:35it was like whoa this is sci-fi. They're
- 15:38dressed up as aliens and stuff and it
- 15:39was like just like that door was like
- 15:42whoa this is wild. Are we sure we want
- 15:43to go down this path? It was just like
- 15:45this open world of music that I've never
- 15:47even considered that was a genre and it
- 15:49was like wow this has been made possible
- 15:51because someone is like you know hurting
- 15:53these artists like sheep to be you know
- 15:55in this kind of gate of you know music
- 15:58for the weirdos I guess.
- 16:04you know, Mike has been, you know, an
- 16:07added layer to the the opportunities
- 16:09that we've been um made available to us.
- 16:11And
- 16:12yeah, he's been incredible because I
- 16:14just feel that without Mike's
- 16:16assistance, I don't think we would have
- 16:18been able to um to partake in these
- 16:21opportunities or chances like just
- 16:22touring with bands that are just passing
- 16:24by through Australia. Um like if if we
- 16:28don't have Mike, we don't have that
- 16:29opportunity. So yeah, incredibly
- 16:32grateful. Um, like it's, you know, might
- 16:35seem like a bit of a a throwaway line,
- 16:37but we're a band from Panath and we kind
- 16:39of started in the in the hardcore scene.
- 16:42We're playing like, you know, clean
- 16:43tones and then, you know, to playing
- 16:47Sydney that was like a bit of a big deal
- 16:48for us. It was like the Big Smoke. Like
- 16:51this is something that you do out like,
- 16:52oh, let's go to, you know, go out for
- 16:54your lunch for your birthday to go to
- 16:56the Big Smoke. But yeah, to play a show
- 16:58in Sydney was a big deal. And then to
- 17:00have that kind of opportunity constantly
- 17:04um be available to us was like yeah that
- 17:06was amazing.
- 17:07>> I remember we were like the Excelsia
- 17:08like that's where Cog played. That's
- 17:10>> that's awesome. Like that was Yeah. And
- 17:12it's because of birds rope. So
- 17:51even the instruments or the, you know,
- 17:54the the types of amps or whatever we're
- 17:56using at the time, you know, we We we
- 17:58knew what we knew, which wasn't a lot.
- 18:00Um, we went into recording probably
- 18:03thinking we knew more than we did at the
- 18:06time as well. Um, and we learned a lot
- 18:07from Dax. So, we mentioned Dax before.
- 18:09Dax conveniently had a studio in Penri
- 18:12as well. Um, and we knew that he'd
- 18:15recorded Sleep Makes Waves. I think
- 18:16that's how we'd eventually Is that how
- 18:18it was?
- 18:19>> No, we
- 18:22when we had that shitty rock band, we
- 18:24recorded a demo with him.
- 18:25>> Oh, okay.
- 18:26>> Yeah. So yeah, we're familiar with Dax
- 18:28and then Sem makes Waves stole Dax from
- 18:31us. Let's make that clear. And um yeah,
- 18:35we since we're like, "Whoa, Daxes just
- 18:38did this seat makes waves EP." And we're
- 18:40like, "We're kind of doing the same
- 18:41music. Dax is in Penri. Let's revisit
- 18:44this." And yeah, I guess when we went
- 18:46back with Dax, it was a
- 18:49hey, you guys aren't the same band
- 18:50anymore. This is totally different. But
- 18:52yeah, further to your point, like yeah,
- 18:53we're playing out a shitty amp still and
- 18:55yeah, trying to achieve something that
- 18:57was probably a little bit far beyond our
- 18:59means. But no, I'm very proud of that
- 19:01EP. Like we've had like um you know,
- 19:04there's um there's flute on that record,
- 19:06there's cello, there's you know, there's
- 19:08um brass instruments. Like for a band
- 19:11doing their first record, it was quite
- 19:13ambitious for say back then three guys
- 19:16from Western Sydney. It was really weird
- 19:18like back then you didn't have like a
- 19:19release strategy as you would now. It
- 19:21was kind of like
- 19:22>> the EP just came out and we just
- 19:24happened to play a show with it. Whereas
- 19:26now it's like, oh, don't play shows
- 19:27before the EP, put the promo out. Back
- 19:30then, like we had no idea what we're
- 19:31doing. We'll like just playing shows.
- 19:33Hey, do you want to play this bill?
- 19:34Yeah, we'll be there in four weeks. See
- 19:36you later. And then that was just kind
- 19:38of like a theme. We were playing at the
- 19:39Excelsi Hotel, um, Landown. I think we
- 19:43played like a couple of, this is
- 19:44probably frowned upon now. We played a
- 19:46couple of weeks at the Land Sound before
- 19:48the actual launch of the Land Sound with
- 19:50the American Fed. Um, yeah. So, yeah, we
- 19:54had a continuous run of shows and but it
- 19:56was never anything really concrete and
- 19:58saying we're going to go on tour stuff.
- 19:59It was just kind of picking things up
- 20:01and yeah, doing what we could. It's
- 20:04worth noting the EP was recorded in so
- 20:08we wrote the EP in 2009.
- 20:10Uh, then we recorded in 2010 and it was
- 20:13released in 2011. So it was a bit of a
- 20:15drawn out process and Mike so during
- 20:17that period of um from go to wo so to
- 20:19speak uh Mike became involved to to um
- 20:23to some extent and by becoming involved
- 20:26was aware of us saw us at shows putting
- 20:28us on a few gigs and um yeah he was kind
- 20:32of picked us up for the EP launch and
- 20:34onwards that was kind of yeah his kind
- 20:37of um first significant involvement with
- 20:39us as a band where he kind of started
- 20:42doing stuff rather than us doing not
- 20:45much essentially. Yeah.
- 20:46>> Yeah. I love that EP.
- 20:48>> Yeah.
- 20:48>> It was really really fun to see them in
- 20:50those early days when they were just
- 20:51starting and and coming out with that
- 20:53music.
- 20:53>> I think Yeah, I went to that EP worn
- 20:56show um I think it was Landers Down and
- 20:59Yeah, I still have the EP somewhere
- 21:01physically and and I've got the Turtles
- 21:04t-shirt. You you always used to wear the
- 21:05underwater
- 21:07>> scooed.
- 21:07>> Yeah, I love that t-shirt. I still got
- 21:09it, but it's all torn.
- 21:10>> Can't wear it anymore.
- 21:11>> Yeah, I haven't thrown it out though.
- 21:13But yeah, I was always uh you know, you
- 21:15know, we that was one of the fans we
- 21:16probably you know, formed one of the
- 21:18closer relationships with over the years
- 21:20and they were always there to help us,
- 21:21you know, put on an awesome show. Um
- 21:24they I think that yeah, they were main
- 21:26support at our Panorama album launch at
- 21:28the factory and um
- 21:32yeah, it's just, you know, whenever I
- 21:34see them put on a show, their energy
- 21:36always rubs off me on me in a positive
- 21:38way. just, you know, loving how like you
- 21:42when when you take a couple of like
- 21:43moody technical players like us and how
- 21:46we have to like concentrate really hard
- 21:47to get the right notes and you just see
- 21:50like Andrew, you know, Pizzle just
- 21:52bouncing around on stage just doing his
- 21:53thing and like having a great time. It's
- 21:55kind of like, oh yeah, that's also the
- 21:57way to do it, isn't it?
- 21:58>> Did never do that.
- 22:00>> Drummer from Dumb. Is that Nick?
- 22:02>> Yeah. I remember um after after a Soul
- 22:07Kiri show that Nick and I were at, we
- 22:10both like that the show ended. We both
- 22:13like grabbed each other by the shoulders
- 22:14and we were like that ending that
- 22:16ending. And I don't I don't know what
- 22:18Suri Song was. Um
- 22:23that's a band that could do a they could
- 22:25do a climax.
- 22:42Heat up here.
- 23:04Heat
- 23:07up here.
- 23:31Heat up
- 23:35here.
- 23:46Heat.
- 23:57Heat.
- 24:06Our
- 24:19first shows in a state were later that
- 24:22year in 2011 touring that EP and we yeah
- 24:26we went to uh Brisbane and then we also
- 24:28went to Melbourne with Niko which is
- 24:30another band that was previously linked
- 24:32and um yeah that was kind of the first
- 24:34taste of it and then following that We
- 24:36scored the support slot for Sleep Makes
- 24:38Waves uh a single they had off their
- 24:41first album Hello Cloud Mountain Tour
- 24:44and yeah again we got to play these
- 24:45bigger rooms when we were you know used
- 24:47to playing to like 30 people so they
- 24:49play like the SP like fantastic
- 24:51opportunity and we were able to do that
- 24:53and yeah so that was 2011 no 2012 sorry
- 24:56yeah by that point
- 24:58>> we had started booking Sulkiri for shows
- 25:00because they're a great live band uh
- 25:03they were really excited to be part of
- 25:04the shows
- 25:05and everyone liked them, just got along
- 25:07really well with them. So, when we were
- 25:10booking that first big Sleep Makes Waves
- 25:13national tour at the start of 2012,
- 25:18uh really the the guys wanted to have
- 25:22some friends on the road with them and
- 25:24also a suitable band that would bring a
- 25:26really energetic live show and we
- 25:28thought Sulcuri would be the perfect
- 25:30fit. They were really enthusiastic,
- 25:32really helpful. They had an awesome live
- 25:34show and they complemented what Sleep
- 25:37Makes Waves did really well. You know,
- 25:39both very kind of upbeat, positive
- 25:41sounding bands um with a lot of epic
- 25:45moments and also, you know, real pride
- 25:48for putting on an energetic live show.
- 25:51And that was something that we really
- 25:52wanted to showcase to people around the
- 25:53country that this wasn't just uh a bunch
- 25:57of people, you know, heads down staring
- 25:59at their delay pedals, but they were
- 26:01actually engaging with the audience
- 26:03despite being instrumental bands. And we
- 26:06felt it was a really great showcase of
- 26:08Sydney instrumental post rock
- 26:10progressive music to have both those
- 26:11bands together. So I have, you know,
- 26:14many fond memories of seeing the bands
- 26:17play together. Uh, especially in
- 26:19Brisbane towards the end of the tour.
- 26:21Nick got up and joined Sleep Makes Waves
- 26:24on stage for the end of We Singer Body
- 26:26Electric and Otto from Sleep Makes Waves
- 26:28got up and joined the Sulkuri guys for
- 26:32uh the end of Strangers as well. So it
- 26:35was a really fun time and felt like, you
- 26:37know, everyone was part of this rising
- 26:39wave um that we were creating with the
- 26:41scene.
- 26:59I knew Sulcuri were an awesome
- 27:01instrumental rock band, but when I heard
- 27:04Hunter for the first time, I felt like
- 27:08they had stepped up to another level and
- 27:10created something just truly iconic,
- 27:14just a fantastic track, has such a great
- 27:18vibe. I I still go back and listen to
- 27:21that track and watch the video and, you
- 27:24know, it it takes me back to such a
- 27:26wonderful time of um you know, uplifting
- 27:31shows and and positivity and this kind
- 27:34of soaring melodic hook that Suluri
- 27:38would later come to perfect. Um this was
- 27:42just an early masterpiece of theirs
- 27:45amongst so many others. Um Home on that
- 27:49record just another underrated classic.
- 27:52Um but Hunter for me still, you know,
- 27:55standout track in the Soul Cury catalog
- 27:58and just such a joy to listen to.
- 28:35Heat.
- 28:47Heat.
- 29:08went to base at the studio. Nick Minute
- 29:26As there was a bit of time between
- 29:28recording No House and releasing No
- 29:31House a year later, we almost
- 29:33immediately started to write new
- 29:35material that would eventually end up on
- 29:38our debut album, I am a brother. In
- 29:41fact, one of the tracks, I am the
- 29:43[ __ ]
- 29:44uh, became a live staple in our sets and
- 29:49we actually even performed that song
- 29:52live at the No House EP launch.
- 29:55And um I guess the the intention for the
- 30:00recording of these songs was to
- 30:03obviously with a debut album make an
- 30:05impression and kind of put your best
- 30:07foot forward, but also to explore on the
- 30:10ideas and instrumentation that we had
- 30:14present on the Know House AP, but
- 30:15develop them and in a more natural way
- 30:18and have them more involved and more at
- 30:22the forefront of the songwriting. and
- 30:25also expand on what we've done before.
- 30:27We introduced a telephone this time
- 30:29around. It's the first uh bit of
- 30:32equipment that you hear on the record.
- 30:34And also on the last track, we purchased
- 30:37a melodica
- 30:39um which is bit of a bespoke instrument
- 30:42for not only the genre but just just in
- 30:45general.
- 31:00Now you walk
- 31:04minute.
- 31:09>> Hello everyone. I'm Andrew from Soul
- 31:11Cury and welcome to the Gunyata Sessions
- 31:14where we're taking you through the
- 31:15progress of recording our debut album at
- 31:18the Puzzle Factory in Sound Studios.
- 31:57We've really pushed our limits on this
- 31:58record. We're a lot heavier, a lot
- 32:00darker, and a loter.
- 32:16for this new Soul Curi record. Uh, we've
- 32:18really opened up to a lot of space and
- 32:20using a lot of lush and ambient sounds
- 32:22and I think it's going to translate well
- 32:24on the new record.
- 32:37Over the past years, we've had special
- 32:39guests join us on records and and
- 32:42performances to help give the sociary
- 32:45sound another dimension. We've really
- 32:47honored that. And this time around in
- 32:48the Gunyatta sessions, we've enlisted an
- 32:50ensemble to help us reach that rich
- 32:52textural sound that we're after.
- 33:17Looking back at those songs and that
- 33:19recording period, it was such a such a
- 33:22good time, such a lot of fun. And
- 33:25looking at those videos that we made in
- 33:27the studio diaries, it's
- 33:29>> we it kind of looked like we're having a
- 33:32lot of fun and even though that we take
- 33:34this band very seriously, but we also
- 33:37do allow ourselves to have a laugh and
- 33:40enjoy each other's company and kind of
- 33:42make a joke of ourselves. So yeah, very
- 33:44proud of that record and uh it seems to
- 33:47be the record that people gravitate
- 33:49towards the most, which is pretty cool.
- 33:53And um yeah, still enjoy playing songs
- 33:56off that album to this day.
- 34:04>> Oh, hey. I didn't see you there. Thanks
- 34:06for keeping up to date with the
- 34:07recording of our debut album. We hope
- 34:08you've enjoyed the Gunata sessions and
- 34:10we hope to see you at a show soon.
- 34:12Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and
- 34:14Tumblr.
- 34:16Thanks.
- 34:21So, the other day I had an idea for a
- 34:23little trick we could um do on the Sieri
- 34:25album. Uh we're going to take my
- 34:27portable recording rig out to a car
- 34:29park, a um an undisclosed location. And
- 34:33Nick's going to play some drums. So, um
- 34:35we're anticipating we may have a bit of
- 34:38bit of a visit from security, but
- 34:39hopefully we'll be in there in and out
- 34:41pretty quick. So, fingers crossed.
- 34:46Heat
- 34:59up
- 35:04Heat
- 35:17up
- 35:27here.
- 35:36Well, surprisingly because we are in
- 35:38where we live, um I thought security
- 35:40would would have been here very very
- 35:42quickly. However, they've been nice to
- 35:44us tonight and for once I'm still here.
- 35:46>> Yeah. A significant one for me was um
- 35:49the the Sulkery album launch in 2013.
- 35:54Andrew from Sulkuri was just like, I
- 35:56love this record. You are playing our
- 35:58album launch. And I was like, "No, it's
- 36:02not a band, dude." And he's like, "I
- 36:04don't care. I'm booking you and I'm
- 36:05putting your name on the bill." So, uh,
- 36:07organize a band and we'll see you uh in
- 36:11August. Um, and he was right. And that
- 36:14adamant that that determination from him
- 36:18um, specifically was actually what Bade
- 36:21seems today. Actually, there's another
- 36:23song I want to shout out from Soul Curi
- 36:25that I'm going to have to look up the
- 36:26title of because I want to This was
- 36:29another song that I heard and I was
- 36:32like, "Oh, these guys could be bigger
- 36:34than they are."
- 36:36>> Do you do you remember the one that has
- 36:37the vocals on it off that off the album
- 36:39with the boat on the front?
- 36:40>> Yeah. Um,
- 36:42>> Home.
- 36:42>> Home
- 36:43>> with Hannah from Middle
- 36:44>> from Are You My Brother?
- 36:45>> Yeah.
- 36:46>> I'm going to have to add that to a
- 36:48playlist to listen to later. It's been a
- 36:49couple years since I've listened to it.
- 36:51>> Yeah. Man,
- 36:55I'm getting chills thinking about the
- 36:56song. I don't even remember what it
- 36:56sounds like, but I remember what it made
- 36:58me feel like. That's a Yeah, if they
- 37:01could have that song could have been
- 37:03immense if again if the right person had
- 37:05heard it at the right time.
- 37:11The light is blurry all the time
- 37:18and pushing
- 37:20towards the light.
- 37:25Making miles of jars of clay
- 37:32smoothing
- 37:35taking shape.
- 37:37Heat. Heat. Heat.
- 37:47Yeah.
- 37:51Heat.
- 38:08Heat. Heat.
- 38:18Heat. Heat.
- 38:30Oh,
- 38:36heat, heat.
- 38:46Heat. Heat.
- 39:08Heat.
- 39:23Heat.
- 39:50Um, I was quite familiar with Sieri. Um,
- 39:53I'd been to their shows. I knew Nick
- 39:56personally and had played in other
- 39:57projects with Nick. He used to well, we
- 40:00used to have some other bands and things
- 40:01going on at that time prior to 2014. Um,
- 40:06and yeah, I was definitely a fan of the
- 40:07band. Um, one one memory worth putting
- 40:10out there, Mo is I went I can't remember
- 40:13which show it was, but I came to a
- 40:14Sierrii show. I think you were
- 40:16supporting um Laura.
- 40:19>> I went more to see Laura. Sorry. No, I
- 40:21was like, "Oh, cool. Serious supporting
- 40:24>> Yeah. Yeah. No, I was like, "Oh, cool.
- 40:25Surious supporting Laura. I can catch up
- 40:28with Nick and and see Laura. I I think
- 40:29that was the show. But anyway, I
- 40:31remember you playing the song I am the
- 40:32[ __ ] And you had your boss
- 40:34looper pedal and you triggered like just
- 40:36some little reverse loopy thing at the
- 40:38end of the song and I was like, "Fuck,
- 40:39I've got to go one of those pedals."
- 40:41That was sick. And that was probably
- 40:43just the start of the rabbit hole for me
- 40:45becoming a pedal fiend. So, thanks Mos.
- 40:47Cost me thousands of dollars. But
- 40:49anyway, um
- 40:52>> yeah. Yeah.
- 40:54Um, see I was definitely a fan of the
- 40:56band and then at that point in time, uh,
- 40:59Nick and I were in this other band and
- 41:01it was it was kind of falling like Nick
- 41:04and I were losing interest in being in
- 41:06that project for much longer. It was
- 41:07kind of falling apart a bit for us. Um,
- 41:10and he left before I did. I I sort of
- 41:12stuck around for a a run of shows that
- 41:14were booked and then also kind of parted
- 41:16ways. But it was around that time Nick
- 41:17said to me, "Hey, so you're thinking
- 41:19about adding a second guitarist and um,
- 41:21I'm going to put your name out there for
- 41:22it." And I was like, "That sounds
- 41:23awesome." Like, "Sounds good." And I
- 41:26don't know if you auditioned anyone
- 41:28else.
- 41:29>> It's interesting, right? So, we started
- 41:31writing the material for that second
- 41:32record and you came on very early on,
- 41:34but it was more of a if Ryan wants to do
- 41:37it, yes, that's great. If not, we'll
- 41:39just continue as a three-piece. But I
- 41:41remember we had a chat, we're kind of
- 41:42thinking like all these um songs we're
- 41:46putting down, it had a lot of parts and
- 41:48involvement with other people, but we're
- 41:50only three-piece at that time. So, it
- 41:52just made sense to open the door to
- 41:53yourself and like to join a band, it's
- 41:56um it's quite difficult, right? Like
- 41:58there's a lot of things that you need to
- 41:59to factor in. One, it's like are they a
- 42:02good fit as a like a gel-wise? Um do
- 42:05they like the music? Um you need to have
- 42:07some type of financial backing so you
- 42:09can you know um support the band and
- 42:12make the band do things and also like
- 42:13you need to have the equipment. So, it's
- 42:15a lot of things to get through and you
- 42:17know, Ryan was um you know, ticked all
- 42:20those boxes. So, it became a bit of a
- 42:21no-brainer and obviously he's like a
- 42:23great human and since then he's gone
- 42:25from strength to um you know, become
- 42:27like the producer for the band. And then
- 42:29when Ryan joined the band and they
- 42:31became a a quartet, um you know, I felt
- 42:34that just added like this extra uh vibe,
- 42:39extra musicianship, extra production, um
- 42:43expertise and melodicism.
- 42:45>> I guess the disappointing thing for you
- 42:47and I is Ryan skipped all the [ __ ] bits.
- 42:49like we did all the hard work of getting
- 42:52the band name. Um because just like
- 42:54something worth discussing like bit of a
- 42:56baptism of fire for you like your first
- 42:58show was in Brisbane supporting maybe
- 42:59she will whereas our show was playing in
- 43:02someone's backyard.
- 43:05>> Trust me, I did plenty of my [ __ ] with
- 43:07the last band.
- 43:09Um I don't want to name and shame. So
- 43:14but yeah, I've played my fair show of
- 43:16bad shows. Fair share of bad shows. And
- 43:19um yeah, baptism by fires.
- 43:22>> I remember like having the conversation
- 43:24you because it was kind of a point where
- 43:27was trying to fill things out for you
- 43:29and you're like, "Am I in? Am I not?"
- 43:30I'm like, "Yeah, yeah, man." And like it
- 43:31came to the point like, "Hey man, we
- 43:33want to do the role. How are you keen?"
- 43:34He's like, "Yeah, sweet." I'm like, "All
- 43:35right, we got this tour. Maybe she
- 43:37will." Um yeah, we need you in Brisbane
- 43:39and then you know, Melbourne on these
- 43:41dates. You're like, "Whoa, this is um
- 43:42you straight into third gear, so to
- 43:45speak."
- 43:45Um, but now like since since Ryan has
- 43:48joined, it's like musically we've gone
- 43:51to another level and and as a result so
- 43:54has the band. So yeah, thanks man.
- 44:02>> First I hit you in the [ __ ] nut.
- 44:07>> You hit the
- 44:11Heat.
- 44:26Heat.
- 44:44I came in basically the songs were kind
- 44:46of raw skeletons I think at that point.
- 44:50>> Yeah.
- 44:50>> 2014.
- 44:51>> Yeah. 2014. Yeah. And I remember I think
- 44:54it was Team Solar was the first song I
- 44:56put some parts down to. That was my
- 44:59initiation you could say. I was like you
- 45:00were like what are you going to chuck on
- 45:01this? I was like, "How about this?" And
- 45:04I tapped out a few notes and you were
- 45:06like, "That sounds cool." I like, "Okay,
- 45:08good." Um
- 45:12um
- 45:14um so yeah, I think there was a few
- 45:15skeletons of songs there and then but I
- 45:18was very much welcomed as a writer which
- 45:20was good because um I wouldn't have too
- 45:23much interest in just being told what to
- 45:25play and not having much creative input
- 45:27I guess. So I definitely like you know
- 45:29that was a match well made as well
- 45:31because everyone was you know that's the
- 45:33type of band we are. It's not a like
- 45:34some bands will have a primary
- 45:35songwriter and and the other band
- 45:37members come in and play and that's fine
- 45:39that works. Um but for us it's very much
- 45:41like we chuck ideas in and we try them
- 45:44out and we try them in a new order. We
- 45:45try it with this bit instead of that
- 45:47bit. And so everyone gets to be in the
- 45:49cooking pot so to speak. So um that was
- 45:52something I definitely enjoyed about the
- 45:54band from early on. um and more so than
- 45:57other projects I'd been in I think as
- 45:58well that I got to
- 46:01um yeah contribute to the compositions.
- 46:04We released Sad Boys Club in 2015. That
- 46:06was in April. And then we jetted off to
- 46:08Europe for the first time ever to play
- 46:10Dunk Festival in Belgium in May. Yeah,
- 46:14May. Um, so it was pretty like pretty
- 46:16tight in terms of um release to touring
- 46:19and we teamed up with Tangle for leaving
- 46:20and we did a couple of shows around
- 46:22Germany, Belgium, uh, Romania, Czech
- 46:26Republic. It was like an incredible tour
- 46:28and incred incredible moment in our
- 46:29lives where you know we got to play
- 46:31shows every day as opposed to doing an
- 46:33Australia where is you play Friday,
- 46:35Saturday, go back to your your your 9
- 46:37to5 on the Monday and then pack the car
- 46:39again and do it again. And um yeah, this
- 46:42was our first run of doing shows back to
- 46:44back and that was incredible. Um the
- 46:47shows we were playing did differ from
- 46:49like playing at Dunk Festival where it's
- 46:51a large crowd of like 600 people to then
- 46:54playing a little pup with 30 people in
- 46:56it. So it was a bit um you know
- 46:59humiliating in ways and way to bring it
- 47:02back to feet. But you know we treat
- 47:04every show the same. So for us it was
- 47:06just like a a very good opportunity to
- 47:08be able to do this with your with your
- 47:10closest friends.
- 47:48when Sier um played Dunk. Um when I saw
- 47:51them on that bill, I was like super
- 47:54happy. um and seeing them doing their
- 47:57European tour uh for the first time
- 48:01are genuinely like super super happy for
- 48:03those guys. Um yeah, just really proud
- 48:06really.
- 48:43Heat. Heat.
- 48:57Yes. So 2015. So we supported um yeah
- 49:00Trail of Dead and MW that year. That was
- 49:02big. That was straight after the
- 49:04European tour with Tangle Force Living
- 49:06who were from Perth. And um yeah, those
- 49:08tours were excellent. We got to play
- 49:10some big rooms like the Trifford, Max
- 49:11Wartz. Um yeah, really it felt like
- 49:15we're really in our groove that time.
- 49:17Like it felt like not to say that we're
- 49:20fulltime but like every weekend
- 49:21something so curious was happening which
- 49:23was like a big deal for us because it
- 49:25was something that we put forward and
- 49:27you know we sacrificed
- 49:30quite a lot to kind of get to that
- 49:31position and then to like to make that
- 49:33sacrifice and to see things happening
- 49:35and opportunities become available and
- 49:36you're doing it. It was like yes this is
- 49:38good this is feeling nice uh let's keep
- 49:41doing this. So yeah, 2015 was I still go
- 49:44down as one of the best years of my
- 49:45life. Um it was just yeah so much soul
- 49:49curious stuff without much happening in
- 49:50my outpost lives really. So
- 50:25Heat.
- 50:29Heat.
- 50:52Heat up here.
- 51:11Heat up here.
- 51:41Yeah. Um, we've been involved with Birds
- 51:43Road Records for probably close to 7
- 51:46years now. And um it's hard to think
- 51:50what life would be without Bird's Rope
- 51:52for our band because probably still be
- 51:54looking for gigs in Western Sydney. But
- 51:56now
- 51:57>> now that the Jolly Frog has burnt to the
- 51:58ground, there would be nowhere for us to
- 52:00play gigs if it wasn't for Birds Rope.
- 52:02So
- 52:02>> So yeah, it's been a great help. Mike's
- 52:04um released two of our records. Um
- 52:07Travels toured around the country of
- 52:10times and even this year got the chance
- 52:12to go to Europe, which was um a huge
- 52:14milestone for the band.
- 52:15>> It's phenomenal going to Europe. Yeah.
- 52:17>> Yeah. Um, some of our favorite bands
- 52:18that are playing today are Dump Saint,
- 52:21uh, Sleep Makes Waves, Miniscus, Captain
- 52:23Kicks, and The Awesomes, and, um,
- 52:26>> I really enjoyed Mish actually.
- 52:28>> I checked them out earlier on to So
- 52:30yeah, it's a great label, great bands,
- 52:32and they're all good, nice, friendly
- 52:34people.
- 52:35>> Um, Mike,
- 52:37he loves a pun. U, he's very punny in a
- 52:41way.
- 52:42>> Um, he is the best. You you can't beat
- 52:46him. He will always out pun you. So if
- 52:48you're going to challenge him to pun,
- 52:50don't even start. But I think I've got
- 52:52the upper hand on him a couple of times.
- 52:53So I'll take that to the grave. And I
- 52:55think he knows his place on those two
- 52:56occasions. So yeah,
- 53:30I think Mount Pleasant like well for me
- 53:32personally was different because I was
- 53:35rather than kind of joining this band in
- 53:37the middle of the process I was now a
- 53:39fullyfledged part of the process. So, it
- 53:42was definitely a record that felt as
- 53:43more a complete picture of us as a
- 53:45fourpiece, I guess. Um, and it was
- 53:48definitely a record where I think we
- 53:49just threw off the shackles of post rock
- 53:52a bit more. I think like
- 53:54like I don't think many of the songs
- 53:57that would really sound like a typical
- 53:59post rock song. So like we we drew from
- 54:03a much wider range of influence and some
- 54:05people might criticize it as a weakness
- 54:06of the album even like it it it changes
- 54:08tonality a lot throughout the album but
- 54:11you know whether you call it a weakness
- 54:13or a strength that it has a lot of
- 54:14variety and keeps your interest like
- 54:15it's not a monotonous album. So, um,
- 54:20yeah, what
- 54:22I think like even amongst stuff like we
- 54:24all like different tracks off that album
- 54:25like I'm, you know, I like the later
- 54:27ones or whatever, you know, and then
- 54:29there's some like the heavier and and
- 54:30that's fine. Um, and I think ultimately
- 54:32we matured a lot, not only as
- 54:35>> play like in like musicians, but like
- 54:38people as well.
- 54:39>> Yeah, I think we pushed us push pushed
- 54:43ourselves a lot more technically on that
- 54:45album. like there's a lot of kind of
- 54:47proggy stuff more so than um post rocky
- 54:50stuff like time signature kind of
- 54:52changes and tempo changes
- 54:55um and yeah just like um continuing on
- 54:58from what Moz said like a wide range of
- 55:00influences so like the first few tracks
- 55:02are very kind of riffy like like I don't
- 55:05want to say metal but like riffy like
- 55:07technical like in your face and then
- 55:10there's kind of like a almost tripop
- 55:12kind of like relaxed kind of track that
- 55:15just just, you know, it's like um yeah,
- 55:19I don't know. It's it's I feel like we
- 55:20Yeah, we we explored a lot on that
- 55:22album.
- 55:24>> Yeah, I think like Ryan's correct and
- 55:26and f to what Moz is saying is we're
- 55:29obviously more confident as players, but
- 55:31I think the biggest step was like this
- 55:33is Ryan's like Ryan from the from the
- 55:36from the offset. And not only that, he
- 55:39also produced the record and recorded in
- 55:41his house. So, look, it is soul by name,
- 55:45but this is very much a Ryan record.
- 55:47Like, let's let's be real. Um, and those
- 55:50influences that Ryan was saying, that's
- 55:52that's that's that's Ryan. So, like a
- 55:54song like Pmpkin, that is Ryan and it
- 55:57rocks and it's so hard to play because
- 55:59it's it's Ryan.
- 56:22Heat.
- 56:25Heat.
- 56:40Whereas when we're writing stuff, it's
- 56:41like, yeah, it's three chords. This is
- 56:43awesome. But Ryan's like, there's three
- 56:44chords in like 20 seconds. It's crazy.
- 56:47Um,
- 56:48>> yeah. So, I think the the step up is
- 56:50because Ryan became more involved and
- 56:53it's evident with that record and like
- 56:54how it was received. Like we charted um
- 56:56like not to brag, but like for us to do
- 56:59that instrumentally, like that's crazy.
- 57:01And um we got number one on the
- 57:03independent records and like 91 on area.
- 57:07>> Hey, I'm telling the kids that. So
- 57:09that's fantastic.
- 57:10>> Yeah.
- 57:12>> Every time my mom's like, "You're still
- 57:13doing that band?" I'm like, "Mom, we're
- 57:1491 in Australia at the moment. Don't
- 57:17read next week cuz we won't be there.
- 57:44When I heard Mount Pleasant, I thought
- 57:47it was just a phenomenal album, but in
- 57:50particular, Pendock in Progress. I'm a
- 57:53big sucker for melody, and this has just
- 57:56got one of the best instrumental
- 58:00you know, rock guitar melodies uh that
- 58:02I've ever heard. Just a shimmering beam
- 58:05of light cascading over uh a beautiful
- 58:09set of chords and rhythm. And it's one
- 58:13of my all-time favorite instrumental
- 58:15tracks. Just absolutely in awe of this
- 58:19composition and never get tired of
- 58:21listening to it.
- 58:42So, there's obviously a massive gap
- 58:44between the release of Mount Pleasant
- 58:47and the actual album launch show for
- 58:49Mount Pleasant. And none of these bands
- 58:53had played shows for months and months
- 58:55and months. And when Soul Cury actually
- 58:58came to do the show, I was obviously,
- 59:01you know, a little bit curious and and
- 59:03somewhat concerned like how is this
- 59:05phenomenal live band going to look on
- 59:08stage after not having done any gigs and
- 59:11here they have to come and deliver a
- 59:13headline show for this pummeling epic of
- 59:17an album in Mount Pleasant. What I saw
- 59:19that night was probably the best Suriri
- 59:23show that I have ever seen. I was just
- 59:26blown away and I was like, "Wow." Like,
- 59:29what a phenomenal live show. Old
- 59:32material, new material, everything just
- 59:34consistently at such a high level. Uh
- 59:38sounds were amazing. I saw the guys in
- 59:40soundcheck, you know, carefully dialing
- 59:42in their tones, coming out the front to
- 59:44listen to how they were coming through
- 59:46the PA. really close attention to
- 59:48detail. And I asked them after the show,
- 59:51I was like, "Wow, like I was honestly so
- 59:56surprised that you came out at the level
- 59:58that you did." And they told me, "Oh,
- 1:00:02you know, we're really glad that you
- 1:00:03said that because we've really put in a
- 1:00:04lot of work. Two rehearsals a week for
- 1:00:07six weeks."
- 1:00:10And I was like, "All right,
- 1:00:13that is the formula. Sulcuria found the
- 1:00:15formula. you want to put on a show like
- 1:00:18that, two rehearsals a week for six
- 1:00:20weeks and then there's the gig. Um, and
- 1:00:24so I just was so impressed and I think
- 1:00:28it's no coincidence that, you know, when
- 1:00:30they went on to go and play in Europe,
- 1:00:32uh, or even when they had to, uh, do the
- 1:00:35second leg of the Europe tour, uh, with
- 1:00:38a fill-in drama for Nick cuz he couldn't
- 1:00:40make the tour. They were just so tight
- 1:00:43and focused and professional and
- 1:00:46prepared so well that it was undeniable.
- 1:00:50No one could go to a Sulcuri show and
- 1:00:52say, "Ah, they were a bit off tonight.
- 1:00:54They were a bit loose. It was a bit
- 1:00:56scrappy." They always put on a great,
- 1:01:00well-prepared, professional, high
- 1:01:02energy, enthusiastic, engaging show. And
- 1:01:06I'm so proud of them and
- 1:01:09just, you know, hope that so many more
- 1:01:13people get to come and and discover
- 1:01:14their music and their live shows and and
- 1:01:17get to see what I get to see. Um, so
- 1:01:20yeah, amazing work guys.
- 1:01:23>> We released Mount Pleasant the week
- 1:01:25before the lockdown happened. So March 6
- 1:01:28was when March 6, 2020 was when Mount
- 1:01:31Pleasant was released. We played a show
- 1:01:33with Mono in Melbourne and we realized
- 1:01:35in the crowd a lot more people wearing
- 1:01:37masks. We're like, "Okay, we're hearing
- 1:01:38about this co thing. It's pretty crazy."
- 1:01:40Uh, the next week we went into lockdown
- 1:01:43and um, you know, country shutting
- 1:01:45borders and stuff like that. that April
- 1:01:47will meant to tour with we lost a sea
- 1:01:50for six weeks. So what has since
- 1:01:52happened is that that tour just kept
- 1:01:55getting postponed continuously. Um it
- 1:01:58was 2021 and it was 2022 and we end up
- 1:02:01did go on that tour November of last
- 1:02:04year. So, November 2022 that is and that
- 1:02:06was a fantastic opportunity for us
- 1:02:08because we lost a sea are obviously a
- 1:02:10one of the forefront one of the
- 1:02:12forerunners sorry in in the genre but um
- 1:02:15not only in Australia but like globally
- 1:02:17and to be able to you know play those
- 1:02:19shows you know 200 people back to back
- 1:02:22in club shows was a fantastic
- 1:02:24opportunity for us and to like tour on a
- 1:02:26bus like it was yeah it was royalty in a
- 1:02:29way
- 1:02:30>> I that's hard to get used to
- 1:02:33>> recently we went on tour with Sieri, who
- 1:02:35again just were the most solid, hardest
- 1:02:39working rock band we've ever been on
- 1:02:41tour with. And yeah, and I just until
- 1:02:45until it's kind of like I think you form
- 1:02:48a different relationship when you're on
- 1:02:49a long tour like that. Look, we'd been
- 1:02:52friends with Willow Sea in a way, you
- 1:02:54know, in the scene for many years. Um,
- 1:02:57and for us to have the opportunity, like
- 1:02:59Andrew said, to do a tour like that with
- 1:03:01a band like that, um, was, you know,
- 1:03:03it's fantastic for us like we've we've
- 1:03:06noticed we've we've felt the benefits of
- 1:03:08that tour, you know, immediately and
- 1:03:10still do, you know, with fans and
- 1:03:11Spotify and all that sort of stuff. But,
- 1:03:13um, you know, with the opportunity to go
- 1:03:14again, um, and just, you know, they're
- 1:03:17great guys. You know, we've known them
- 1:03:18for a while, but now we're like, you
- 1:03:20know, close mates and we, you know, keep
- 1:03:21in contact and it's it's great. And
- 1:03:23that's part of I think the whole bird
- 1:03:24thing, you know, just we did it with
- 1:03:27SEMAX Waves. We played shows with them.
- 1:03:28They were killing it, you know, and we
- 1:03:30got to kind of go along with it. And
- 1:03:31then there was bands from overseas. And
- 1:03:32then now there's Will We Will See, and
- 1:03:34they're like smashing it. Like it's
- 1:03:35great. And again, it comes down to bird
- 1:03:38and Mike and you know. Yeah.
- 1:03:41>> Yeah. Um
- 1:03:44it was a good match. like Tango for a
- 1:03:45leading tour in 2015 was sensational and
- 1:03:48then the the 2022 run with uh We Lost
- 1:03:52the Sea was fantastic. Uh I think the
- 1:03:55the gel between the bands was um
- 1:03:57phenomenal. Like it was it was like I
- 1:03:59remember there was a quote with Dugo the
- 1:04:01drummer for We Lost the Sea and uh he he
- 1:04:04was like, "Oh, this tour is so easy."
- 1:04:06And I said to him, "That's because it
- 1:04:07doesn't feel like a tour." And that was
- 1:04:09um some road stop in Poland. But um
- 1:04:13like yeah, it was just it it felt like a
- 1:04:15you know like a school tour, like a
- 1:04:17school bus tour if that made sense. But
- 1:04:19we're not we're not Yeah, we're not
- 1:04:21stopping at Parliament House this time.
- 1:04:22We're actually stopping somewhere to
- 1:04:23play a show. Um yeah, really cool. And
- 1:04:26um yeah, fantastic opportunity.
- 1:04:28>> After touring them especially, we were
- 1:04:30just like Penri. Oh yeah. I mean they
- 1:04:35suck the dues and they
- 1:04:38brought everything to the stage every
- 1:04:41single night and it was like super
- 1:04:44refreshing and and they just yeah I was
- 1:04:48really uh blown away by their energy and
- 1:04:51enthusiasm and Yeah.
- 1:04:53>> It's weird because like we've like I was
- 1:04:54saying before we've had we se's had such
- 1:04:56a history with those guys. We've played
- 1:04:57numerous shows with them. They even
- 1:04:58played a launch, Quite a Space on Earth
- 1:05:00launch.
- 1:05:01>> Yeah.
- 1:05:01>> And it's always been around and
- 1:05:05>> the their records don't do their music
- 1:05:07or their live show justice, I reckon.
- 1:05:10>> Yeah. And they're they're awesome dudes
- 1:05:12and [ __ ] rock hard and just are just
- 1:05:15lovely to be around. Really really
- 1:05:17awesome.
- 1:05:17>> Excellent.
- 1:05:18>> Lovely dudes.
- 1:05:21It was a pleasure to tour with them most
- 1:05:23recently. Get to know them.
- 1:05:24>> Feels like we don't want to anyone else
- 1:05:26now. So they're great dudes and by the
- 1:05:30end of the European tour they were [ __ ]
- 1:05:32hot live. Really good.
- 1:05:34>> It's Romania was when I went something's
- 1:05:36changed
- 1:05:37>> that the whole ending of their set just
- 1:05:39had so much more energy and was
- 1:05:41>> attitude.
- 1:05:42>> Oh it's amazing.
- 1:05:43>> Yeah.
- 1:05:43>> I think as well it was just so well
- 1:05:44organized like
- 1:05:47>> I'm not super privy to all behind the
- 1:05:48scenes but I'm sure a large part of that
- 1:05:50is Mike and Bird's robe. Like the driver
- 1:05:52we had was amazing. Like we never had to
- 1:05:54know. Like obviously things go wrong on
- 1:05:56tour, but we never had to know about it.
- 1:05:58Like that was behind closed doors. Like
- 1:06:00you guys, you guys just enjoy your
- 1:06:01night. You've got like 20 bottles of
- 1:06:03free wine you grabbed in to lose. Like
- 1:06:06just drink that and don't worry about
- 1:06:07the problems we're having on the bus or
- 1:06:08whatever it is. And it was just so well
- 1:06:10organized just for us to have that
- 1:06:12amazing time as well. Like we were
- 1:06:13spoiled as hell. Like so yeah, that was
- 1:06:17great too.
- 1:06:18And then there's obviously like the the
- 1:06:20you know we're not as popular as we'd
- 1:06:22like us to see and we're the first ones
- 1:06:23to recognize that but like the the fan
- 1:06:26interaction you have where someone's
- 1:06:27traveled eight hours to play your show
- 1:06:28and it's like I'm struggling to get my
- 1:06:30friends down to our shows and like to
- 1:06:32have that level of commitment overseas
- 1:06:34where you know you think back to 2006
- 1:06:37when we set up that MySpace account and
- 1:06:39that little study of yours. Um who would
- 1:06:41have thought that this would be
- 1:06:42happening like that is crazy and it's so
- 1:06:44funny. Um like I talk to my father a
- 1:06:46lot. I'm really close to my father and
- 1:06:48he keeps saying, "Yeah, that Mike guy,
- 1:06:50he does a lot of good things for you,
- 1:06:51doesn't he?" I'm like, "Yeah, we're just
- 1:06:52lucky."
- 1:06:54>> Yeah. Some of our greatest memories
- 1:06:55would definitely have been supporting
- 1:06:58Tangled Thoughts of Leaving and We Lost
- 1:06:59the Sea. Um, again, both birds buddies.
- 1:07:08>> This year is going to be particularly
- 1:07:09special because we have five Australian
- 1:07:11bands playing at Dump Festival. Five
- 1:07:15Australian birds row bands playing the
- 1:07:18last day of Dunk Festival 2023.
- 1:07:21>> I I lost count. Australian bands on the
- 1:07:23lineup this year.
- 1:07:26>> I think five bands this year. Yeah,
- 1:07:28>> it's mental.
- 1:08:08It feels amazing. It does feel amazing
- 1:08:10to be back at Dunk Festival after all
- 1:08:12this time waiting uh with the pandemic.
- 1:08:14So um yeah, incredibly privileged to be
- 1:08:16back and to be playing with not only a
- 1:08:20load of uh international acts but also
- 1:08:22Australian bands um all on the same day.
- 1:08:24It was like it's it's this feels like a
- 1:08:27festival back home but it's not. And uh
- 1:08:29yeah, it's been truly a great experience
- 1:08:30for us.
- 1:08:47Heat. Heat.
- 1:09:22Heat.
- 1:09:48Heat.
- 1:09:50Heat.
- 1:09:59Heat.
- 1:10:24Cranebrook was a bit of a concept EP and
- 1:10:27something very new and different for us.
- 1:10:29Um, we just finished Mount Pleasant, the
- 1:10:31album, which was, I guess, a bit more of
- 1:10:33a typical Sieri album. And just as we
- 1:10:36wanted to release and take over the
- 1:10:38world, the famous CO struck and uh you
- 1:10:41know confined us back to our bedrooms.
- 1:10:43Uh this EP was born out of frustration
- 1:10:45from lockdown and co cancellations to
- 1:10:48all our shows. So we decided to fill the
- 1:10:51time by recording some ambient and
- 1:10:53acoustic works.
- 1:10:54>> So I came up with the idea to basically
- 1:10:55revisit what Mount Pleasant meant to us
- 1:10:58as a concept and as a musical idea and
- 1:11:01basically reimagine it as an ambient
- 1:11:04record. and it was something we could
- 1:11:05trade a bit over the internet, trade
- 1:11:06ideas over the internet while we were in
- 1:11:08lockdown.
- 1:11:09>> We're big fans of ambient artists. Like
- 1:11:11I'm a massive John Hopkins fan. I love
- 1:11:13Stars of the Lid. Uh Ryan's into Nils
- 1:11:16from Olaf for Arnold. So, it it's a
- 1:11:19yeah, it's a territory that we've always
- 1:11:20wanted to to visit. And it I know
- 1:11:24everyone hates talking about lockdown,
- 1:11:25but this is an album that we kind of
- 1:11:27wrote through online chats originally
- 1:11:30cuz we couldn't leave the rehearsal room
- 1:11:32and or couldn't leave our house to go to
- 1:11:34a rehearsal room. And that kind of
- 1:11:37allowed us to look at instrumentation
- 1:11:39that we normally would not consider. Um,
- 1:11:42so gone were the amps, gone were the
- 1:11:43guitars, and in came things like
- 1:11:46keyboards, glock and spills,
- 1:11:48metallophones, and then um string
- 1:11:50instrumentation as well.
- 1:11:52>> It eventually turned into something way
- 1:11:53bigger than I thought it would be. My um
- 1:11:55original plan was maybe release a couple
- 1:11:57of songs online and leave it at that.
- 1:11:59And um as much as I thought for that, I
- 1:12:02think I have to um admit defeat. Piery
- 1:12:04was right. We eventually turned it into
- 1:12:07a full-blown vinyl release and it's
- 1:12:09being really wellreceived. So, thank you
- 1:12:11very much um to all the fans. Thank you
- 1:12:13to PICY for talking me into making it
- 1:12:16what it is. Uh yeah, we're really proud
- 1:12:17of it.
- 1:12:18>> We are borrowing some of the themes that
- 1:12:20we explored in Mount Pleasant and we are
- 1:12:24kind of transposing those to a new piece
- 1:12:27of work in this Crrame EP. And the
- 1:12:30reason for the title is Mount Pleasant
- 1:12:32was the suburb that no longer exists and
- 1:12:34Cranebook is what it became, which is
- 1:12:36where we all grew up. opened up the
- 1:12:38avenue to experiment with more
- 1:12:40instrumentation.
- 1:12:41Um, and we really loved the concept of
- 1:12:44incorporating more of that string
- 1:12:45quartet uh sound with our music. Um, and
- 1:12:49during the process of writing the EP, we
- 1:12:51were introduced to Manique, who's a um,
- 1:12:53arranger for strings, and she's
- 1:12:54basically become a bit of a collaborator
- 1:12:57with us. Um, Manique is great, has
- 1:12:59helped us develop our, you know,
- 1:13:00concepts and ideas for having um, string
- 1:13:03quartets in our um, arrangements. And
- 1:13:06that has bled over into the album we're
- 1:13:09working on right now, which will have um
- 1:13:11also some beautiful string arrangements
- 1:13:13on it.
- 1:13:15And um it's worth noting Manique is a
- 1:13:17recommendation from Sim. So Birds Row,
- 1:13:19Birds Row, Boom.
- 1:13:26>> It's a really special tour for us. For
- 1:13:28me personally, it was one of the first
- 1:13:29post rock bands that I got into and kind
- 1:13:32of opened my eyes into what uh our music
- 1:13:34could be. uh back in my university days
- 1:13:37and to yeah see him finally uh come out
- 1:13:40to Australia um in the year of 2025 is
- 1:13:43uh makes a 23 year old university
- 1:13:46student very happy. Yeah, the tour was
- 1:13:48good. We played Brisbane last night.
- 1:13:50Brisbane was a lot of fun. It's our
- 1:13:52first time up there in just over 9
- 1:13:54years. So um it was good to get back and
- 1:13:57felt like it was an inch that long
- 1:13:58needed a scratch. So um yeah, very good.
- 1:14:01Thank you.
- 1:14:14Heat.
- 1:14:35We just finished writing and recording
- 1:14:39our fourth studio album and um that's
- 1:14:44all I can say at the moment because
- 1:14:45yeah, we got a long roadway ahead and if
- 1:14:48it was a 400 meter race, we're probably
- 1:14:50on the second turn um ahead of a long
- 1:14:55journey.
- 1:14:59>> Yeah. Okay. Um Yes. So, we're actually
- 1:15:01playing one song tonight. We actually
- 1:15:02been playing on this tour. So, the
- 1:15:03opening song of the set is most likely
- 1:15:06going to be the lead single as well as
- 1:15:07the opening track to the record. So, um
- 1:15:10that's if Michael likes it, which I
- 1:15:12think he does. So, all systems go.
- 1:15:19>> Uh friendship. Uh, simply friendship.
- 1:15:22Like, if I hated the guys and like the
- 1:15:24music was great and we're making money
- 1:15:25of it, I'd hate it and we wouldn't be
- 1:15:27doing it. Um, yeah, straight up
- 1:15:29friendship. Like, being in that room
- 1:15:31with the the four of us is it's a
- 1:15:33special experience. And I'd like to say
- 1:15:35we're mostly productive and even we're
- 1:15:38not, it's just like it's really nice to
- 1:15:39be able to make um to make something
- 1:15:42with your good friends, whether it's
- 1:15:43music, whe it's, you know, you're into
- 1:15:44pottery or, you know, art or whatever.
- 1:15:47Yeah. to have that connection with um
- 1:15:49your close friends and you're creating
- 1:15:50something. I don't think you can
- 1:15:52substitute that for anything in life.
- 1:15:54It's really ex it's exactly that. It's a
- 1:15:56good excuse to go to hang out with your
- 1:15:58mates and say it's going to rehearsal
- 1:16:00and it is you're rehearsing, but you
- 1:16:01know, as you get older, not many people
- 1:16:03get to see their mates as often as we
- 1:16:05do. Go overseas with your mates. Um go
- 1:16:09to gigs, you know, it's just um it's
- 1:16:11playing in a band is to your point,
- 1:16:13you're not going to make money off it
- 1:16:14unless you're, you know, doing pretty
- 1:16:16well. But it's it's the fun and it's why
- 1:16:19we're still doing it. How old are we?
- 1:16:20Nearly 40. Christ.
- 1:16:22>> Yeah. Hang on. Hang on. Hang on. Yeah.
- 1:16:25And also think like you've had it like I
- 1:16:28know it's a cliche. You've had a tough
- 1:16:29day at work and then you get in the room
- 1:16:30and you're like just for that three
- 1:16:32hours nothing really matters and it's
- 1:16:35just like a really fun time and yeah
- 1:16:37dude like playing music's special and
- 1:16:40really love doing it.
- 1:16:42I think you've actually hit the nail on
- 1:16:45the head in the past was when you said
- 1:16:46like you like I can't remember what you
- 1:16:49said exactly, but you was like I love
- 1:16:51rehearsal night because you're at work
- 1:16:53but you know or you know if you've got a
- 1:16:56week of work like Monday to Friday like
- 1:16:58uh most bands unfortunately um but you
- 1:17:01know rehearsals on say Wednesday night
- 1:17:03and it just makes you go oh well at
- 1:17:04least I've got rehearsal on Wednesday
- 1:17:06night like can it's it breaks up the
- 1:17:09routine of life and just gives gives you
- 1:17:11something really special to look forward
- 1:17:13to. Yeah,
- 1:17:19>> massive impact. I remember I think I
- 1:17:21said to PC if we ever play Europe I I'd
- 1:17:23resign from my job. Um still working
- 1:17:27that job. Um and that was a while ago
- 1:17:30>> still and playing Europe. Um yeah. H
- 1:17:34>> what impact have they had? It's massive.
- 1:17:36I mean like we said earlier like it's an
- 1:17:38opportunity you know birds if it wasn't
- 1:17:40ultimately if it wasn't for bird or
- 1:17:42someone like Mike and Alex and what they
- 1:17:43did especially in the early days is
- 1:17:44getting us together we would have been
- 1:17:46lucky to play a show in Sydney you know
- 1:17:47we're from out west we were lucky to
- 1:17:49play some pub shows at the time we got
- 1:17:51the call up to play in Sydney and we
- 1:17:53thought it's pretty good um yeah so
- 1:17:57impact massive you know
- 1:18:00I think without birds the biggest gig
- 1:18:02we'd have at the moment would be like
- 1:18:04the tattis in Penri or something like
- 1:18:06that. But instead, we've got a another a
- 1:18:10Europe tour coming up in a few weeks
- 1:18:12time. So that's the difference that
- 1:18:14Bird's RO has made for us. I think
- 1:18:16>> many years ago, I remember having the
- 1:18:18dream of there were two dreams I had
- 1:18:19with playing music that I thought were
- 1:18:22realistic dreams and that was playing in
- 1:18:24Europe and have my music on vinyl. And I
- 1:18:28was able to do that and it wasn't like,
- 1:18:29oh, this is a pie in the sky dream. It's
- 1:18:31like this is possible. So, Bird's Robe
- 1:18:34is the two words of opportunity and
- 1:18:36possibility, I would say.
- 1:18:39>> You know, it's been so great to see them
- 1:18:41develop over the years. Like, their
- 1:18:43debut EP still has some banger stuff on
- 1:18:45it. Uh, Hunter from the first album is
- 1:18:48one of my favorite tracks. Um, but they
- 1:18:51just continue to write awesome stuff.
- 1:18:53You know, Pendog and Progress, what a
- 1:18:54what an awesome song. These are like
- 1:18:56alltime great like instrumental rock
- 1:19:00tracks in my opinion. And you know, it's
- 1:19:03really
- 1:19:05really awesome for me to see that, you
- 1:19:06know, bands like We Lost the Sea and
- 1:19:08Sleep Makes Waves and Miniscus, like
- 1:19:11everyone loves Soul Kiri. Everyone loves
- 1:19:13playing with them. They're such a good
- 1:19:14vibe to have on tour. They're
- 1:19:16professional. Um, and yeah, I just, you
- 1:19:20know, hope for many more years in the
- 1:19:22future with those guys. I I just think
- 1:19:25the world of them.
- 1:19:28Heat.
- 1:19:45Heat.
- 1:20:09Heat. Heat.
- 1:20:15Oh,
- 1:20:33heat.
- 1:20:54Heat. Heat.
- 1:21:30Yeah, this This was asked to me just
- 1:21:32recently actually and I um I'm going to
- 1:21:37preface it by saying I am not
- 1:21:40particularly good at what I do. Um and I
- 1:21:45I wouldn't call myself if I was if I was
- 1:21:47a football player, I would not be a good
- 1:21:48trainer, right? I'm not good at
- 1:21:51rehearsal. Um I'm not I'm not one of
- 1:21:54those drummers that tries to improve
- 1:21:56themselves. I'm I'm basically on
- 1:21:59survival mode. Um, so a lot of drummers
- 1:22:02will will sit there with with practice
- 1:22:04pads and they'll they'll do
- 1:22:05paradittleals for like half an hour
- 1:22:06before they go on. Um,
- 1:22:09I am basically a step up from raw
- 1:22:12dogging it. Um,
- 1:22:17I'll say that again. I'm basically a
- 1:22:18step up from doing it um completely raw.
- 1:22:22Sorry, that was a really rough term,
- 1:22:24wasn't it? Um,
- 1:22:28so I um I one of the things that's
- 1:22:31really important is is I do a lot of
- 1:22:33fast things. Um, or I think they're not
- 1:22:36that I don't know. They're they're not
- 1:22:37that fast. It's not that impressive. Um,
- 1:22:39but my arms can get tired. So I just I
- 1:22:42used to do um uh for for a very short
- 1:22:46period of time was involved in Tao
- 1:22:47drumming. So So Japanese drumming. and
- 1:22:50they would do these warm-ups with your
- 1:22:51arms and it's just basically cons like
- 1:22:53doing small circles getting bigger and
- 1:22:55going backwards. And that seems to work
- 1:22:57for me. I don't know. It's it's I feel
- 1:22:59like um I feel like I'm a like a a
- 1:23:03Sunday league footballer who's who's
- 1:23:05turned up and gone, you know what my
- 1:23:06warm-up is? Uh a packet of darts and a
- 1:23:09and a beer and I'll be good. And somehow
- 1:23:11goes out there and plays 80 minutes and
- 1:23:13and scores two goals and you're like,
- 1:23:14how does that work? Like it it shouldn't
- 1:23:17physically be possible. That's what it
- 1:23:18feels like. I feel like I'm the worst at
- 1:23:20warming up. Like I I barely do it. Um
- 1:23:23but the one thing I do is I don't drink
- 1:23:25more than say three or four drinks. Um
- 1:23:29because I get halfway through the first
- 1:23:31song and I'm out of breath already. Like
- 1:23:33imagine drinking four beers and then
- 1:23:34trying to go for a run. You just you're
- 1:23:36going to vomit. So that's basically it.
- 1:23:38Don't drink as much um as you think you
- 1:23:42want to. Um and just move your arms a
- 1:23:44bit.
- 1:23:48Uh yeah, sure.
- 1:23:57>> You get bigger to hold the microphone.
- 1:24:00So So you get bigger, you get a little
- 1:24:02bit bigger, bit bigger, and you get
- 1:24:05really big and then you stop and you go
- 1:24:07backwards. So I do that. Um, and then
- 1:24:10there are sometimes if I because I don't
- 1:24:11really need to warm my legs up, there
- 1:24:13are sometimes I might stand on one leg
- 1:24:14and balance while I'm doing it. Um,
- 1:24:17>> it's good propriceptive training.
- 1:24:19>> Thank you. Yes. Yes. Ryan's Ryan's a
- 1:24:21physiootherapist, so he knows the he
- 1:24:22knows the technical terms. Yes, that's
- 1:24:24that's basically it. Um, probably the
- 1:24:26shittest warm-up you could do. Um, but
- 1:24:28it works for me, so I survive.
- 1:24:39I think we're taking a photo.
- 1:24:40>> Okay,
- 1:24:41>> you came in at the right time, too.
- 1:24:44>> That was my constructive criticism.
- 1:24:46Wasn't even constructive. It was just a
- 1:24:48wish list, I think.
- 1:24:58>> Have you seen the hairs of my arm? Just
- 1:25:00raise when he said that.
- 1:25:02>> I thought we were really in trouble.
- 1:25:13I just I got asked questions.
- 1:25:18>> All right.
- 1:25:30>> We can spread out.
- 1:25:32Heat.
- 1:25:50Heat.
- 1:26:09Heat. Heat.
- 1:26:18Heat. Heat.
- 1:26:40Heat.
- 1:26:53Heat.
- 1:27:02Heat

- 1:27:20here.
- 1:27:27Heat

- 1:28:21Heat up
- 1:28:27here.
- 1:28:34Heat
