  28. 1:06people from India and bring them to the
  29. 1:07United States you know both the United
  30. 1:10States and India were kind of mad at us
  31. 1:12cuz we were taking you know the smart
  32. 1:13people and moving them in India lot of
  33. 1:16kids also fight with their parents on

  41. 1:39of the most influential men in the world
  42. 1:43the Bill
  43. 1:44Gates I have being this young boy who
  44. 1:47always used to hear stories about this
  45. 1:49man about the kind of money he has made
  46. 1:52the kind of lives he's impacting the
  47. 1:54kind of things he's building through
  48. 1:55Microsoft from there to be sitting in
  49. 1:59front of him
  50. 2:00it was surreal when I started the
  51. 2:02conversation you could see it on my face
  52. 2:04that I was really nervous really scared
  53. 2:06I didn't know what to talk about but as
  54. 2:08we went in the conversation the
  55. 2:11podcaster in me took over and we spoke
  56. 2:14about his fears his Mis understandings
  57. 2:17the mission and what is he doing today
  58. 2:20today I want you to see this episode
  59. 2:22from a lens of a 20-year-old sitting
  60. 2:25with Bill Gates and figuring out what
  61. 2:28goes on in his brain this episode is
  62. 2:31truly special because I could have never
  63. 2:35thought that Bill Gates will be on our
  64. 2:39podcast this soon in our journey I
  65. 2:41always had a belief that we will be able
  66. 2:44to sit down with the smartest people
  67. 2:48around the world but it happen this
  68. 2:51soon I can't believe this right now I
  69. 2:55just want you to enjoy this episode the
  70. 2:56way I did I want you to sink in that
  71. 2:59this is happening because it's not
  72. 3:01singing in with me and I just want to
  73. 3:04tell you that there are more episodes
  74. 3:06coming so keep supporting us and hit the
  75. 3:09Subscribe button right
  76. 3:14now welcome on figuring out sir I'll
  77. 3:17tell you a little story so during the
  78. 3:19pandemic me and my sister we were
  79. 3:22watching the Netflix documentry inside
  80. 3:24Bill's brain and halfway through it I
  81. 3:28told my sister that hey you know what
  82. 3:30like one day I'll sit with Bill Gates
  83. 3:33and I'll directly speak to him and get
  84. 3:36inside his brain and just randomly and
  85. 3:38she was laughing so this one's for
  86. 3:41you you did it so it's it's an
  87. 3:45opportunity I don't know how it just
  88. 3:47came out of my mouth and it's happening
  89. 3:49today so thank you so much for doing
  90. 3:51this well you've come to India quite
  91. 3:55often tell me something that You' have
  92. 3:58observed about India which a lot of
  93. 4:00people don't know about well people
  94. 4:02probably uh you know because they're
  95. 4:05here all the time you know they probably
  96. 4:07don't recognize how much things have
  97. 4:09changed you know if you go away and come
  98. 4:11back then you see wow you know the level
  99. 4:14of Entrepreneurship and the uh you know
  100. 4:18the amount of innovation that's actually
  101. 4:21taking place here uh it's pretty
  102. 4:24fantastic and you know for the
  103. 4:27foundation we've been here originally
  104. 4:30uh because a lot of the health
  105. 4:32challenges were here and we still care a
  106. 4:35lot about that but uh now a lot of our
  107. 4:38invention is being done here whether
  108. 4:41it's uh well vaccines obviously uh we
  109. 4:45have some incredible Partnerships but
  110. 4:47it's broadening to you know better seeds
  111. 4:51better
  112. 4:52Diagnostics uh you know the ways that we
  113. 4:55can use AI uh for health or education uh
  114. 4:59so the
  115. 5:00uh Innovation ecosystem has really
  116. 5:03exploded and that's going to be great
  117. 5:05for India it's going to be great for the
  118. 5:07world so when you meet other leaders
  119. 5:09around the world or when you meet your
  120. 5:11your billionaire friends what's the
  121. 5:13first thing you tell them about India is
  122. 5:15it the same thing what you just told me
  123. 5:18um yeah it's
  124. 5:20uh you know we've had such a great
  125. 5:23experience uh in our work in India um
  126. 5:28you know I encourage people to come and
  127. 5:31tap into uh the great things uh going
  128. 5:35on is there anything specific you tell
  129. 5:37them well you know my connection with
  130. 5:40India goes all the way back to the
  131. 5:41Microsoft days when you know we at first
  132. 5:45would hire people from India and bring
  133. 5:47them to the United States and you know
  134. 5:50both the United States and India were
  135. 5:51kind of mad at us because we were taking
  136. 5:54you know the smart people and moving
  137. 5:55them and uh you know then they came back
  138. 5:58here to India and created the Microsoft
  139. 6:00India uh work which has you know been
  140. 6:04absolutely fantastic so you know up
  141. 6:07until the year 2000 I mainly knew the
  142. 6:10tech uh scene so you know a lot of
  143. 6:14Bangalore
  144. 6:15hydrabad uh seeing the country more
  145. 6:18broadly you know that's in my foundation
  146. 6:21work so you know bear up um you know
  147. 6:26seeing you know where we could partner
  148. 6:29and and help with things uh you know I
  149. 6:32still want to take more vacation here
  150. 6:34I've done it a little bit but uh you
  151. 6:36know there's a lot of great places in
  152. 6:38India that I haven't been to talking
  153. 6:40about Microsoft and taking people from
  154. 6:42here to us uh people like
  155. 6:46satella Sunder paii there have been
  156. 6:49incredible CEOs around the world why do
  157. 6:52you think India is becoming a Global
  158. 6:55Talent capital for the world do you
  159. 6:57think anything special here which is how
  160. 7:01day well you know 20% of the world's
  161. 7:05people live here in India and India's
  162. 7:07had a particular emphasis on you know
  163. 7:11engineering software you know and turned
  164. 7:13out a lot of taught people and so when
  165. 7:17you get people like suar SATA who are
  166. 7:20both great at engineering and at
  167. 7:23management you know that's a a magic uh
  168. 7:27combination and you know so they you
  169. 7:31know these companies you know are
  170. 7:33looking anywhere in the world to find uh
  171. 7:36uh that mix and you know so India's
  172. 7:39getting about its fair share of those
  173. 7:42top leadership positions and you know it
  174. 7:44partly comes from having great
  175. 7:47universities uh you know not just the
  176. 7:50iits but starting with them um you know
  177. 7:54that's using the incredible Talent
  178. 7:57that's here
  179. 7:59so talking about Indian
  180. 8:01Talent you do a lot of philanthropy work
  181. 8:04here and you've met a lot of talented
  182. 8:06people here lot of rich people here as
  183. 8:10well do you and you believe that all the
  184. 8:14money that rich people have or like
  185. 8:16people who have made wealth for
  186. 8:17themselves they should use it for
  187. 8:19charity work they should pledge it in
  188. 8:21India there's a usually a lot of people
  189. 8:23believe that as parents is their duty to
  190. 8:26save everything for their kids for The
  191. 8:28Inheritance right like the kids will get
  192. 8:30everything what do you think is the
  193. 8:31right mindset using all the money for
  194. 8:35pledging and giving it back to the
  195. 8:36society or giving it to the
  196. 8:39children well I think you know everybody
  197. 8:42gets to decide on that you know in my
  198. 8:44case you know my kids got uh a great
  199. 8:51upbringing in education but you know
  200. 8:54less than 1% of the uh the total wealth
  201. 8:59um because I decided it wouldn't be a
  202. 9:01favor to them you know it's not a
  203. 9:03dynasty you know I'm not asking them to
  204. 9:06run Microsoft I want to give them a
  205. 9:08chance to have their own earnings and
  206. 9:11success you know be significant and not
  207. 9:13overshadowed by the incredible luck and
  208. 9:17good fortune I had and different
  209. 9:19families see that differently I think
  210. 9:21the people who've made uh fortunes from
  211. 9:25technology are less
  212. 9:27dynastic uh and you know so they they'll
  213. 9:32even you know take their capital and
  214. 9:35give a lot of that away you can have a
  215. 9:38view of giving away your capital or just
  216. 9:39giving away your earnings um and you of
  217. 9:43course I love all
  218. 9:44philanthropy uh but the tech sector is
  219. 9:47the probably the most aggressive
  220. 9:49about um you know giving most of it away
  221. 9:54not the other sectors you've not seen
  222. 9:55that in any other kind of industry where
  223. 9:58people try to give not to the same
  224. 10:00degree it tends to be uh giving more you
  225. 10:04know of the giving some portion of the
  226. 10:06profit as opposed to uh the the actual
  227. 10:11base Capital you know in India a lot of
  228. 10:15kids also fight their with their parents
  229. 10:17on inheritance have your kids ever
  230. 10:19spoken to you and be like hey why are
  231. 10:21you not giving us everything or anything
  232. 10:23has it ever happened um you know you
  233. 10:27don't want your kids to ever be confused
  234. 10:29used about your support for them and
  235. 10:32your love for them and so I do think
  236. 10:34explaining early on your
  237. 10:38philosophy uh you know that you're going
  238. 10:40to treat them all equally uh and that
  239. 10:42you're going to give them incredible
  240. 10:45opportunities uh but that you know the
  241. 10:47highest calling uh for these resources
  242. 10:51is uh to go back um to the neediest
  243. 10:56through the foundation and you know
  244. 10:58they've seen the success of the
  245. 11:00foundation I hope they're very proud of
  246. 11:03of the foundation and
  247. 11:06um uh so you know I I've seen cases
  248. 11:10where kids actually tell their parents
  249. 11:12to be more philanthropic you know I
  250. 11:14think the younger generation sometimes
  251. 11:16actually uh is pushing against this idea
  252. 11:21of uh uh you know the wealth just being
  253. 11:25passed down uh
  254. 11:27mostly um
  255. 11:29yeah so that's so you know every
  256. 11:31family's a a bit different I have last
  257. 11:34question on India and then we'll get to
  258. 11:36the foundation work and try to
  259. 11:38understand you as
  260. 11:40well if you get an opportunity to invite
  261. 11:44three Indians for dinner Dead or Alive
  262. 11:48who would there
  263. 11:50be well I get to spend time with you
  264. 11:53know some incredible uh people in Indian
  265. 11:57you know I get time with the prime
  266. 11:58minister and understand his
  267. 12:00vision uh and how we fit into that this
  268. 12:04you know
  269. 12:052047 uh uh thing that you know
  270. 12:08everything is lining up to try to
  271. 12:10achieve that you know I get to meet uh
  272. 12:14there was a a great scientist Raj Bond
  273. 12:16who created the uh Department of
  274. 12:20biotechnology uh there was a
  275. 12:22mathematician ramanan uh who I I would
  276. 12:25have loved to have met him because he
  277. 12:27was a uh you know almost mysterious how
  278. 12:31he was so genius at what he was able to
  279. 12:34do um you know the I got to work with
  280. 12:39rotten Tata I'm getting to work with all
  281. 12:41of the uh amazing philanthropists and uh
  282. 12:46a lot of the innovators here you know I
  283. 12:48get to see small companies early on I
  284. 12:51just went through uh some of these uh
  285. 12:54companies using Ai and health uh some
  286. 12:57Pro for profit a few
  287. 13:00uh
  288. 13:01nonprofit um you know we had a great
  289. 13:0425th
  290. 13:06uh uh 25 year celebration and this great
  291. 13:10sitar artist you know came and uh that
  292. 13:13was a pretty special thing uh so it' be
  293. 13:16hard for me to pick there's there's uh
  294. 13:18so many incredible talents you can't
  295. 13:21pick
  296. 13:22three I I I think I defend uh some
  297. 13:27people by not including them uh fair
  298. 13:31fair okay you were talking about small
  299. 13:34companies if you were to start something
  300. 13:37from zero in India
  301. 13:39today where would you put most of your
  302. 13:42time and what the first step you'll take
  303. 13:45well you'd mostly start a company
  304. 13:46because you think you enjoy working on
  305. 13:49something and you think you have a
  306. 13:51worldclass understanding of you know a
  307. 13:53unique contribution you know for me that
  308. 13:56was software for this day and age you
  309. 13:59know if you think you understand you
  310. 14:01know Fusion uh you know that's great if
  311. 14:04you're successful which uh that's risky
  312. 14:08um you know you could really improve the
  313. 14:10world you know AI is sort of the today's
  314. 14:14equivalent of what I did when I was
  315. 14:16young to see you know wow the
  316. 14:20possibilities are
  317. 14:23unlimited and so you know I'd probably
  318. 14:26be doing uh one of these new companies
  319. 14:30if I was starting out today is it do you
  320. 14:33still feel there's opportunity a lot of
  321. 14:35opportunities in AI to build something
  322. 14:37as significant as what you have built or
  323. 14:39it's pretty late well you know the big
  324. 14:42companies are uh putting a lot of money
  325. 14:46into it um and the number of companies
  326. 14:50globally is is a you know huge I mean
  327. 14:54you know many people didn't even know
  328. 14:56these Chinese companies were doing all
  329. 14:58this work and yet you know some of the
  330. 15:00best results over the last 6 months have
  331. 15:02come from three or four of the models
  332. 15:04there so it's not when I got going in
  333. 15:08Computing it was a very small set of
  334. 15:11people and you know people thought we
  335. 15:13were crazy that there we set a computer
  336. 15:16on every desk and a computer in every
  337. 15:18home and that just seemed strange to
  338. 15:21people because they couldn't see the
  339. 15:23they didn't get softw and they didn't
  340. 15:25get the uh exponential Improvement of
  341. 15:29the chips was making Computing you know
  342. 15:31basically free so it's I'd say it's
  343. 15:36tougher
  344. 15:37um to get out in
  345. 15:40front uh there will be new companies I
  346. 15:43mean Nvidia you know is almost as
  347. 15:46valuable as uh apple and
  348. 15:49Microsoft and
  349. 15:51yet uh you know they they you know came
  350. 15:55into prominence only really in the last
  351. 15:57five or six years although they're about
  352. 15:5915 years old so there are opportunities
  353. 16:02and there will be some new companies
  354. 16:05that use
  355. 16:06AI uh to achieve unbelievable success
  356. 16:09but it'll be you know two or three out
  357. 16:11of
  358. 16:1210,000 and you know would I be able to
  359. 16:14do that again hard to say you you talked
  360. 16:17about like when you started a lot of
  361. 16:20people thought that what are you doing
  362. 16:23this is some random thing these guys are
  363. 16:25trying to do they may be stupid they may
  364. 16:27be thinking too big whatever right and
  365. 16:30over the time every time you do
  366. 16:31something big usually people do not
  367. 16:35understand you or anyone like not just
  368. 16:38you like whoever wants to start
  369. 16:39something new and big in today's world
  370. 16:42or as of today what's the biggest
  371. 16:45misunderstanding about
  372. 16:47you what do you think what do people
  373. 16:49misunderstand about Bill Gates well
  374. 16:52whenever you hear about somebody who's
  375. 16:53got you know some degree of power or you
  376. 16:58know ridiculous amounts of
  377. 17:00money you know might you might think
  378. 17:02they have grand schemes uh you know and
  379. 17:05they're uh you know there's almost a
  380. 17:08sense that you know their their values
  381. 17:11are different than your values and you
  382. 17:14know that you should be concerned about
  383. 17:16their
  384. 17:17agenda um you know hopefully for the
  385. 17:21people who actually do know me um you
  386. 17:23know and how much I love uh the
  387. 17:26foundation work and you know how I work
  388. 17:29with my friends or my kids uh you know
  389. 17:32it's very different from the people who
  390. 17:34just think oh wow you know he's one of
  391. 17:36these guys who's you know pushing levers
  392. 17:39and uh has has too much money and and
  393. 17:42too much uh Authority so that people
  394. 17:46misunderstand about you
  395. 17:48and talking about misunderstanding do
  396. 17:51you have you made any major mistake that
  397. 17:53people do in
  398. 17:55about well some of my mistakes are very
  399. 17:57public I mean Microsoft uh you know we
  400. 18:00had lots of products that didn't work
  401. 18:02you know we did a a phone operating
  402. 18:04system and now uh you know Android you
  403. 18:07know took that position so I certainly
  404. 18:10you know messed that up uh uh in a in a
  405. 18:15huge way uh for the foundation you know
  406. 18:19we often have multiple plans you know we
  407. 18:22we wanted to have an HIV vaccine uh we
  408. 18:25don't have that yet you know we're
  409. 18:27working on a very cheap toilet but it's
  410. 18:30still too expensive uh so that's taking
  411. 18:33a lot longer we don't have polio
  412. 18:35eradication done I'm still uh very
  413. 18:38committed to that but it's it's taking a
  414. 18:40lot longer uh than than we thought it
  415. 18:43would so do talking about foundation
  416. 18:46work you've impacted millions of life
  417. 18:50and you spent a lot in making people's
  418. 18:53life better what's your biggest
  419. 18:55challenge today because some somebody on
  420. 19:00somebody who's watching this might think
  421. 19:02that at your level with so much power
  422. 19:06influence money you can actually fix a
  423. 19:08lot of problems what do you think is
  424. 19:10your problem like what challenges do you
  425. 19:12see
  426. 19:13here well I love the scientific
  427. 19:16challenges I mean we still don't fully
  428. 19:19understand
  429. 19:20malnutrition uh we have some tools to
  430. 19:23reduce it that it's super exciting uh
  431. 19:26but you know I'm really pushing our
  432. 19:29research workers uh hard that okay you
  433. 19:33know we need we need to know more about
  434. 19:37that you know I do think getting money
  435. 19:40to help the very poorest countries a lot
  436. 19:42of which are in Africa you know Asia you
  437. 19:45know uh many of the countries are having
  438. 19:49good economic growth and in
  439. 19:52Africa has a lot of
  440. 19:54unique uh governments or instability
  441. 19:59or disease challenges and
  442. 20:01so telling people they should you know
  443. 20:05help out uh other humans even though
  444. 20:08they're they're far away and speak a
  445. 20:10different
  446. 20:11language that's not as easy as I thought
  447. 20:13it would be uh you know right now some
  448. 20:16of the rich countries including my
  449. 20:17country are cutting their aid budgets
  450. 20:20and I'm I'm very disappointed uh you
  451. 20:23know to me that's not you know the
  452. 20:25golden rule of treating people like
  453. 20:28you'd like to be treated so what do you
  454. 20:30think all the people who are watching
  455. 20:32this including me uh young people should
  456. 20:35do so that we could convince more people
  457. 20:37to help other people well when you're
  458. 20:40young uh if you're here in India you
  459. 20:43know you can probably travel you know
  460. 20:46some modest distance an hour or to and
  461. 20:49see people you know who don't have the
  462. 20:51same opportunities you do that you know
  463. 20:54they're smart but their school's not
  464. 20:55good or you know they get uh some health
  465. 20:59problem and they're not able to access
  466. 21:02things I would say in India you know
  467. 21:04programs like the aspirational district
  468. 21:07program India does uh talk openly about
  469. 21:12the places that are the worst off and
  470. 21:14that's you know that's pretty impressive
  471. 21:16uh you know even issues like sanitation
  472. 21:18that governments most governments you
  473. 21:21know you wouldn't catch them talking
  474. 21:22about
  475. 21:24toilets uh you know this country you
  476. 21:27know took on pretty aggressive plan and
  477. 21:30made a lot of progress on that so you
  478. 21:34can go out and
  479. 21:35see uh people and develop empathy uh
  480. 21:39without going too
  481. 21:41far and you
  482. 21:44spent hours and hours and days in this
  483. 21:48country you spent Millions on vaccines
  484. 21:51and trying to take care of healthare
  485. 21:54challenges what's one problem you feel
  486. 21:57that money not
  487. 22:00fix
  488. 22:01H you know there's a lot of talk about
  489. 22:04uh
  490. 22:06obesity and uh you know when I saw the
  491. 22:10Prime Minister he was talking about
  492. 22:12various yoga type things that you know
  493. 22:14if people would adopt those but it's
  494. 22:16been hard you know not many countries
  495. 22:19have gotten the behavior change you know
  496. 22:21maybe India can Pioneer some approaches
  497. 22:24there but you know frankly and I'll
  498. 22:27sound like a technologist the most
  499. 22:29promising thing is actually uh a you
  500. 22:33know a drug a class of drugs called
  501. 22:36these glp1 drugs that you know are going
  502. 22:39to go off patent and become cheap and
  503. 22:42you know so I always like a you know I'm
  504. 22:43a little overfocused on a a scientific
  505. 22:46solution so maybe a combination of that
  506. 22:48behavior change and and the new tools
  507. 22:51but Behavior change is hard um we we
  508. 22:55haven't uh succeeded in that as as much
  509. 22:59as we'd like to that me one Behavior we
  510. 23:02all should
  511. 23:03adopt well you know the behavior that's
  512. 23:05helped me is is basically being a
  513. 23:08student all the time wanting to learn
  514. 23:11things and being pretty brutal with
  515. 23:13myself of do I really understand you
  516. 23:16know what's going on you know do I
  517. 23:19understand some AI thing or uh some
  518. 23:23disease thing and you know
  519. 23:26fortunately uh I can meet with people
  520. 23:28people who in many cases can help me
  521. 23:32understand and then you know knowledge
  522. 23:34if you're careful about building your
  523. 23:35your knowledge it all kind of connects
  524. 23:38together but uh you know reading a lot
  525. 23:41being a student you know having people
  526. 23:43who can teach me uh uh that's you know
  527. 23:48been not only fun for me but also a big
  528. 23:51part of My
  529. 23:53Success so all of people who are
  530. 23:55watching this actually feels pretty
  531. 23:58validated dated at this point good
  532. 24:01because this whole podcast is about
  533. 24:03learning from really really incredible
  534. 24:06people like you and we have so many
  535. 24:09questions that we just keep asking to
  536. 24:12learn more to learn more to get inside
  537. 24:13brains so thanks for
  538. 24:15validation
  539. 24:17perfect what's fascinating for me this
  540. 24:20time in your journey like this time your
  541. 24:22visit to India the full Gates Foundation
  542. 24:25board is your right and that's pretty
  543. 24:28unique and they get to experience
  544. 24:30India what what do you think what are
  545. 24:32your
  546. 24:33priorities with regards to this nation
  547. 24:36why the whole board is here what do you
  548. 24:38guys are trying to figure out what are
  549. 24:41the things that you're doing well as
  550. 24:43much progress as we've been part of
  551. 24:47achieving here in India there's still a
  552. 24:49lot to do uh you know the the child to
  553. 24:53death rate is about a third of what it
  554. 24:56was um but it's still
  555. 24:59almost three times higher than in a rich
  556. 25:01country uh so we you know we should all
  557. 25:04want to close that Gap uh that's uh
  558. 25:08Equity uh I mentioned
  559. 25:10malnutrition uh you know the country is
  560. 25:13very serious about that and yet um you
  561. 25:16know it means that your brain never
  562. 25:18develops and sadly if whatever dietary
  563. 25:23or disease things affect you uh during
  564. 25:28pregn pregnancy in your first year even
  565. 25:30if later you get a fantastic diet your
  566. 25:34brain and your physical uh capabilities
  567. 25:38they don't adjust you're you know sort
  568. 25:40of permanently affected and so um you
  569. 25:44know we're working with some great
  570. 25:46scientists here we have a lot of the
  571. 25:47tools of biology have gotten a lot
  572. 25:49better so I do think um you know in the
  573. 25:53next decade we'll totally get to the
  574. 25:55bottom of that uh and you know I'm I'm
  575. 25:59thrilled to do that and a lot of
  576. 26:01the scientists we partner with you know
  577. 26:04including some at icmr but you know lots
  578. 26:06of Institutions around the country uh
  579. 26:09they're also uh committed to that so you
  580. 26:14work here a lot and with the foundation
  581. 26:16you work around the world a lot of
  582. 26:18things and because of all of this
  583. 26:21passion and data and this intention to
  584. 26:25try to help people you've been pretty
  585. 26:28accurate in trying to understand Trends
  586. 26:31way before people like a normal people
  587. 26:34let's say you were pretty accurate in so
  588. 26:36many things in
  589. 26:37predicting so many epidemics as well is
  590. 26:40there something that you know which we
  591. 26:44don't like how do you spot these things
  592. 26:47way faster well the biggest change agent
  593. 26:51in my lifetime has been the the miracle
  594. 26:54of digital you know now uh moving into
  595. 26:58the AI phase of of that digital
  596. 27:01Revolution so the fact that as a young
  597. 27:03person you know I was programming at age
  598. 27:0713 and by you know 18 I had my you know
  599. 27:11thousands of hours of uh really strong
  600. 27:15feedback about you know getting better
  601. 27:17and uh being pushed uh and so to it's a
  602. 27:23really lucky thing to have such a
  603. 27:28familiarity with the thing that's going
  604. 27:30to change the world and so you know I
  605. 27:33wrote a book called the road ahead a
  606. 27:35long time ago you know that talked about
  607. 27:39uh you know the internet and digital
  608. 27:41money and uh video
  609. 27:44conferencing and then when I moved into
  610. 27:46the foundation work the health work you
  611. 27:49know people in that Community understand
  612. 27:51pandemics and you know so my saying hey
  613. 27:54you know there's a big risk and the
  614. 27:56thing that's going to K you know 10
  615. 27:59million additional people is likely to
  616. 28:01be a
  617. 28:02pandemic uh you know that's commonplace
  618. 28:05knowledge if you're in the global Health
  619. 28:07Community it's a very small community uh
  620. 28:10but I was just somebody who was listened
  621. 28:13to uh uh
  622. 28:16stating uh this and sadly you know most
  623. 28:20the people who listen to that prediction
  624. 28:22uh listen to it after it came true then
  625. 28:25you know what my goal was was people to
  626. 28:27hear the that and actually uh stop it
  627. 28:30from happening that's usually the case
  628. 28:33right like people listen
  629. 28:35to Pieces golden edwise pieces and
  630. 28:38pieces of nuggets way after the time has
  631. 28:40been passed right because of this do you
  632. 28:44fear anything today I definitely hope
  633. 28:48that we shape
  634. 28:49AI in a positive way it's such a big uh
  635. 28:55impact on you know
  636. 28:58being smarter than humans uh that it
  637. 29:02will change our world a lot um and it's
  638. 29:06you know it's it's definitely new
  639. 29:08territory so I have a list of about five
  640. 29:10things you know AI shaping AI properly
  641. 29:13is at the top of that list but you know
  642. 29:15avoiding the next pandemic avoiding
  643. 29:18nuclear war uh biot terrorism climate
  644. 29:21change it's only about five or six
  645. 29:23things that we need
  646. 29:25to um minimize
  647. 29:28the chance of um you know and use our
  648. 29:32additional wealth and insights you know
  649. 29:35against those things do you have any
  650. 29:37personal fear what's your biggest fear
  651. 29:39you know it's not like I'm afraid of
  652. 29:41heights or planes or fire or anything
  653. 29:43like that you know I hope I'm I'll be
  654. 29:47sad as my
  655. 29:48brain uh gets less capable you know
  656. 29:52which you know I'm as I turned 70 this
  657. 29:54year you know I'd be lucky to have 20
  658. 29:58years of you know being able to learn uh
  659. 30:02you know maybe I'll get lucky and get a
  660. 30:03little bit more but you know that
  661. 30:05disappoints me because I've had such a
  662. 30:09amazing time learning uh things and I I
  663. 30:13used to think of old people as not you
  664. 30:16know contributing all that much and now
  665. 30:18I've had to change my mind about how how
  666. 30:21important old people are uh do you do
  667. 30:25you feel difference I don't I don't all
  668. 30:28uh you know probably if I I took an IQ
  669. 30:31test I I would do a little bit worse
  670. 30:34than when I was
  671. 30:3525 uh but you know I've accumulated
  672. 30:38enough knowledge you know so
  673. 30:40wisdom uh you know can compensate a
  674. 30:42little bit for a slight uh reduction
  675. 30:46intelligence and I do think it's like a
  676. 30:47muscle that if you're pushing yourself
  677. 30:49to think and learn that you know you
  678. 30:54stay uh it really helps your capability
  679. 30:58a lot um but yeah I have a fear that you
  680. 31:03know I eventually I'll lose you know I
  681. 31:06won't want to pick up a 500 page book
  682. 31:08I'll look at it and go are you kidding
  683. 31:10uh I'm done with
  684. 31:11that so with age you have not felt any
  685. 31:14changes in your brain not really in
  686. 31:17terms of
  687. 31:19um wow no I don't think so um you know
  688. 31:23whenever you can't remember something
  689. 31:25you're like oh no now but uh
  690. 31:28uh you know so maybe a tiny bit of that
  691. 31:32but then you know it's just a little bit
  692. 31:34because you're you're looking for it you
  693. 31:37know when I was in my 20s if I could
  694. 31:38remember something I I was like so what
  695. 31:42uh uh so is there any change you feel
  696. 31:45because so Bill Gates of 25 and Bill
  697. 31:48Gates of 70 is there any change that you
  698. 31:51feel personally well in my 20s I was I
  699. 31:54chose to focus on one topic from you
  700. 31:57know 20 to about
  701. 32:0031 or two
  702. 32:03um I told myself hey I love biology and
  703. 32:08math and all these things but I want to
  704. 32:10be the person who's advancing software
  705. 32:15faster than anyone else and so I really
  706. 32:18did narrow my focus and I I didn't you
  707. 32:22know take much time off and I could stay
  708. 32:26in the office you know 72 hours and then
  709. 32:30crash um and so my
  710. 32:33adrenaline and was really unique now my
  711. 32:39understanding of how to manage people uh
  712. 32:42other than myself wasn't that that could
  713. 32:44you know i' I I look back
  714. 32:47and you know I've learned a lot since
  715. 32:50then but just my
  716. 32:52stamina uh and focus for that period of
  717. 32:55my life you know being kind of kind of a
  718. 32:58a
  719. 32:59maniac uh was was the right thing and
  720. 33:02you know I I you know my competitors
  721. 33:04would say oh no you work too hard and
  722. 33:06I'd say yes I do uh do you think that's
  723. 33:09a great advice for every young person
  724. 33:11who's watching maniac in your 20s it's
  725. 33:13not it's not for everyone um but if
  726. 33:17you're if you're in a
  727. 33:20race uh
  728. 33:22and you know the a little bit moving a
  729. 33:27little bit faster can make a a
  730. 33:30difference uh then yes your your 20s
  731. 33:33when you have no wife and no children uh
  732. 33:38that's the time to do it uh that's the
  733. 33:40time to be little maniac about certain
  734. 33:43things right you also just mentioned
  735. 33:45that you love learning which obviously
  736. 33:48the world knows but during this
  737. 33:49conversation also you just talked about
  738. 33:52it like a little bit again again what
  739. 33:54are you currently learning or what do
  740. 33:55you want to learn now well there's a lot
  741. 33:59going
  742. 34:00on uh you know AI just staying on top of
  743. 34:05that is you know I I very much enjoy
  744. 34:09that and I get to sit and talk with the
  745. 34:12top people at open Ai and I get to play
  746. 34:14around with things but then when you
  747. 34:16think okay now about what about AI
  748. 34:19applied to Mental Health Care uh you
  749. 34:22know isn't that one of the most exciting
  750. 34:24things because you know we can never
  751. 34:27have enough
  752. 34:28therapists uh and even people who
  753. 34:31aren't uh you know suffering massively
  754. 34:35you know maybe we could help uh
  755. 34:38even people with mild uh symptoms so you
  756. 34:42know what does this AI companion look
  757. 34:46like and you know how can
  758. 34:49that help us uh my friend Reed Hoffman
  759. 34:53uh just wrote a book called Super agency
  760. 34:55that he's got a really good about this
  761. 34:58so I'm pushing myself to try and
  762. 35:02understand uh you know what can we do
  763. 35:05there and meet the people who are you
  764. 35:08know pushing the the boundaries uh
  765. 35:10because I see such potential so what
  766. 35:13would you advise young people to start
  767. 35:17learning today and from where AI itself
  768. 35:20well if you have a mathematical mind you
  769. 35:24know not everyone should learn AI uh you
  770. 35:27know these tools are going to be
  771. 35:29available uh to everyone and so you
  772. 35:31ought to be a user of AI but the
  773. 35:35underlying stuff you know that's a
  774. 35:38pretty narrow set of people who will
  775. 35:39have an opportunity to uh you know push
  776. 35:43on a new Training Method um and even
  777. 35:47people who grew up with software some of
  778. 35:50them don't really get this because it's
  779. 35:52it's a bit more mathematical than it is
  780. 35:54just a a Programming type thing
  781. 35:59so it's as a user that okay if you you
  782. 36:03like doing creative work
  783. 36:05yes AI is going to change your world and
  784. 36:07AI hopefully can help you uh do things
  785. 36:12faster and better so my prescription
  786. 36:15would be yes to use it for the areas
  787. 36:18that you're excited about any area that
  788. 36:21you're excited about learn from learn
  789. 36:24about that and try to make a bridge
  790. 36:26between Ai and that industry right I
  791. 36:28mean the internet has so much
  792. 36:31educational material on it so between
  793. 36:34all that material uh and then an AI that
  794. 36:38can help you know take long documents
  795. 36:41and you can have a dialogue with it uh
  796. 36:44you know you can do it in text or you
  797. 36:46can you know now do these generate
  798. 36:48podcasts about things it's uh it's a
  799. 36:50great time to be a learner right you
  800. 36:52know when I was young I had to go to the
  801. 36:54library and you know read the
  802. 36:56encyclopedia alphabetically uh no
  803. 37:00multimedia uh this is a a paradise yeah
  804. 37:04thanks to you guys because you digal
  805. 37:07world Digital World you made it easy for
  806. 37:09us we don't know the world what it look
  807. 37:12like to go to library and read about
  808. 37:15something we get fidgety if we don't get
  809. 37:16an answer in 3
  810. 37:19seconds okay I have last two questions
  811. 37:21for you okay one is in your philanthropy
  812. 37:24work with the foundation how is in India
  813. 37:28contributing to your Global strategies
  814. 37:31well more and more of the
  815. 37:33Innovation um is been done in India uh
  816. 37:37India's you know got a depth of talent
  817. 37:41and a desire for Frugal Solutions and so
  818. 37:45even though the rich World us Europe you
  819. 37:48know we have a lot of talent and for
  820. 37:49some basic science thing like Immunology
  821. 37:52a lot of the new insights will keep
  822. 37:55coming uh from those in institutions but
  823. 37:58when it comes to actually putting the
  824. 38:00pieces together including something like
  825. 38:02AI for healthcare you know I was just
  826. 38:04meeting with a number of companies
  827. 38:06working on on very piece various pieces
  828. 38:09of that in India uh and so the you know
  829. 38:13we need better seeds and we need better
  830. 38:16weather advice for farmers and so
  831. 38:20although we're going to continue to do a
  832. 38:21lot of implementation here in India help
  833. 38:24you know get things rolled out uh more
  834. 38:27and more of our sort of product research
  835. 38:30uh work will be done here okay uh both
  836. 38:33because um it benefits India but you
  837. 38:37know we're also very good if if it's
  838. 38:40saving Indian children really working
  839. 38:43well you know our foundation has a lot
  840. 38:47of presence in Africa so even take you
  841. 38:50know the classic example where India was
  842. 38:52totally the leader on this digital
  843. 38:54public infrastructure the the digital
  844. 38:56money an identity adhar thing uh you
  845. 39:00know funding the Africans to come here
  846. 39:02and learn and uh for their budgets and
  847. 39:05create helping to create the open source
  848. 39:07software that makes it easy for them you
  849. 39:09know that's now a huge agenda item which
  850. 39:11is kind of a South South thing with a
  851. 39:14little bit of facilitation from us got
  852. 39:17it and here's the last question
  853. 39:21uh if you had if the world had to write
  854. 39:26one sentence
  855. 39:27next to the name Bill Gates what would
  856. 39:30you want them to write you know I don't
  857. 39:32do my work you know based on some epith
  858. 39:36uh you know ideally you know they'd say
  859. 39:39that wow there were these diseases
  860. 39:41around you know polio and malaria and uh
  861. 39:46malnutrition and you know now we don't
  862. 39:48have to think about that you know partly
  863. 39:51because uh he championed you know
  864. 39:55putting more
  865. 39:57uh great thinking and resources into
  866. 40:00ending those problems and so you know I
  867. 40:03hope people look at the word polio and
  868. 40:06go what was that uh you know when you
  869. 40:09read dickens's novels and they talk
  870. 40:11about somebody had consumption it's like
  871. 40:13what is that well that's actually TB so
  872. 40:15we still not in the UK we don't have
  873. 40:17much but we we we still do they just uh
  874. 40:21change the word so you know hopefully uh
  875. 40:25some problems that that we can actually
  876. 40:28finish uh and and then move on which
  877. 40:32problem do you think we'll be finishing
  878. 40:33well polio uh you know I I expect even
  879. 40:37in five years uh and that'll give us uh
  880. 40:41The credibility to go after things like
  881. 40:44malarian measles that's amazing oh it is
  882. 40:47it's going to be fun uh it's it's
  883. 40:49amazing in five years we can make that a
  884. 40:52reality it's going to be incredible for
  885. 40:56the humankind it's wow yeah it's only
  886. 40:58happened only once small poox was
  887. 41:00eliminated back in 1980 so you know
  888. 41:03polio of serious disease it's going to
  889. 41:05be the
  890. 41:06second wow I really truly wish that it
  891. 41:11happens faster than what we just talked
  892. 41:13about and I hope like more than by the
  893. 41:16time the foundation gets in full-fledged
  894. 41:19in the work I I believe instead of not
  895. 41:22two three there could be multiple of
  896. 41:24them so that you you lost counting that
  897. 41:26should be the goal and I'm expecting for
  898. 41:28it well thank you so much for doing this
