3. 0:43hey what's up I'm Bethany Hamilton I'm a
4. 0:45pro Surfer and this is my story

6. 1:03I was born and raised in Hawaii and my
7. 1:07family all um surfed and so right when I
8. 1:10was young like 3 4 years old I started
9. 1:13surfing and just fell in love with it
10. 1:15and I just remember when I was about
11. 1:17seven or eight is when I really started
12. 1:20getting into surfing cuz some of my best
13. 1:23friends surfed and we just like going to
14. 1:25the beach and just being in the ocean
15. 1:31I started competing when basically when
16. 1:34my parents could push me into wave and
17. 1:36then push me back out and that was
18. 1:39probably when I was like four or five
19. 1:40and and then I just continued competing
20. 1:43and was pretty hooked just on surfing
21. 1:46and just obsessed with you know the
22. 1:49lifestyle I guess and when I realized I
23. 1:52wanted to be a pro surer I guess I was
24. 1:55probably around 8 or 9 and I just
25. 1:57started competing and doing pretty good
26. 2:00and just like the little amateur
27. 2:02contests around um around Kawai and um
28. 2:06one of my first major events was um the
29. 2:08r and manoni contest and that's on aahu
30. 2:11and um I did good in that I ended up
31. 2:14winning it and I guess even though I was
32. 2:18really young like you can kind of see
33. 2:20like which way my career is heading and
34. 2:23how I'm doing in it and um it was
35. 2:26looking pretty promising

37. 2:31when I was about 5 years old I gave my
38. 2:33heart to Jesus Christ and surfing in
39. 2:36Jesus and my family and just my
40. 2:39lifestyle um kind of all just
41. 2:41started um skyrocketing towards
42. 2:44professional surfing and As I Grew Older
43. 2:46my faith in Christ definitely grew too
44. 2:49and um same with my ability to Surf I
45. 2:52started getting better and better and um
46. 2:55I guess just um going to a lot of like
47. 2:57the young Bible study IES for like
48. 3:00younger kids and um I just knew that I
49. 3:04wanted to serve God with my whole life
50. 3:06and um give everything I do to
51. 3:11[Music]
52. 3:26him I've heard it
53. 3:28said the month before the attack
54. 3:31happened me and my mom had just been
55. 3:33praying a lot about like what's God's
56. 3:35will for my life was and what he wanted
57. 3:37me to do and I just really wanted to
58. 3:40glorify God through my surfing and um I
59. 3:43just didn't know exactly how or um just
60. 3:46what to do so I was just really focusing
61. 3:48on that and then the attack happened and
62. 3:50then it was just like life came to a
63. 3:53halt
64. 3:59on Halloween of 2003 I was surfing with
65. 4:03um my friend and her brother and dad and
66. 4:07then I lost my arm to a shark a shark
67. 4:10just came and bit it off and I don't
68. 4:12know I lost about 60% of my blood and um
69. 4:16it was just a miracle that I survived
70. 4:18and made it to the hospital and I'm
71. 4:21still here today and just stoked to be
72. 4:24alive and doing what I'm
73. 4:28doing my plan my personal like plan was
74. 4:31just to become a pro Surfer and just
75. 4:34blow up in the surfing world and then I
76. 4:37lost my arm and it came to the point
77. 4:38where am I even going to be able to Surf
78. 4:40anymore like what am I going to do am I
79. 4:42going to have to like move to the
80. 4:44mountains and snowboard or become a
81. 4:46photographer and um just all these ideas
82. 4:50were popping up and but inside I knew I
83. 4:54wanted to at least just try surfing
84. 4:56again and give it a go and um I didn't
85. 5:00know what God wanted had in plan for me
86. 5:02but I knew I just wanted to still be a
87. 5:05light for him and he just I think he he
88. 5:08gave me a piece um through every little
89. 5:10situation and um he gave me the strength
90. 5:13to just move on and I started surfing
91. 5:16about 3 weeks after and um I got up on
92. 5:21my third wave and uh pretty much right
93. 5:25then I knew I'd be surfing and being in
94. 5:27the ocean um for as long as I live or
95. 5:31have the ability to do it and now I'm 19
96. 5:35years old and I'm about on my third year
97. 5:38of competing as a pro Surfer on the wqs
98. 5:41and it's really exciting cuz a lot of
99. 5:44people probably doubted me and I even
100. 5:46probably doubted myself and I just know
101. 5:49that God's given me this amazing ability
102. 5:51and opportunity to just compete and Surf
103. 5:55and um just be a light to that world and
104. 5:59just the whole

106. 6:07world when the attack happened uh I
107. 6:10guess I just instantly became famous and
108. 6:13that wasn't really something that I
109. 6:15desired and I didn't really have a
110. 6:17strong desire to just be famous and like
111. 6:20be known by the whole world and that's
112. 6:22kind of what happened
113. 6:24so I realized that that was my
114. 6:26opportunity to to just share God's love
115. 6:29and to this day I guess it just
116. 6:32continues on in different ways um just
117. 6:35through my surfing or opportunities just
118. 6:38to do um different TV shows or um I
119. 6:43think we need to just really be aware of
120. 6:45when our opportunities are out there and
121. 6:47just to share God's love and um be a
122. 6:51light for him
