Full transcript
- 0:09You know, she's always been a surfer.
- 0:11She's been little little surfer out at
- 0:14the beach, you know, running down the
- 0:16beach, playing at the beach all day
- 0:17long.
- 0:19Ever since Bethany was a little baby, I
- 0:21knew she was special.
- 0:25You can't really train someone to be
- 0:26like that. Some people have Some people
- 0:29don't. And Bethany's one of those people
- 0:31that had it.
- 0:36Halloween day, 2003, it was um just like
- 0:40every other day, like
- 0:42woke up and
- 0:44went surfing.
- 0:45And probably about a half an hour, 45
- 0:48minutes after you're out there,
- 0:50that was when it happened.
- 1:00It happened so fast, there wasn't much
- 1:02time to think.
- 1:04Then all of the sudden, it just like I
- 1:06felt like a tug on my board.
- 1:08Right away, I knew what was happening.
- 1:12It happened so fast, there wasn't much
- 1:14time to think. The shark had just taken
- 1:17my arm.
- 1:20You know, we didn't hear anything or all
- 1:22of the sudden, we Bethany just goes, um
- 1:24I got attacked by a shark, and she
- 1:25started paddling in towards us.
- 1:28I looked down and saw that my whole arm
- 1:30was gone, and I don't know, it just
- 1:31freaked me out.
- 1:34Yeah, when we when we're paddling in, I
- 1:35I didn't think she was going to make it.
- 1:38Your arm is gone, like
- 1:39I didn't I was so like devastated. I
- 1:42thought I lost my surf buddy.
- 1:44I mean, you don't think someone's going
- 1:45to make it through that, and I knew how
- 1:47you know, we we were 20 minutes from the
- 1:48beach.
- 1:50When I got to the beach,
- 1:52there were some people waiting on the
- 1:52beach cuz Byron had told them what
- 1:54happened, and Uh, helped me, you know,
- 1:56drag Bethany up on the shore.
- 1:59Right before we were heading to the
- 2:01hospital, um, one of the paramedics came
- 2:03up to me and he whispered, "God will
- 2:06never leave you and nor forsake you." in
- 2:08my ear.
- 2:15Sometimes we don't know why bad things
- 2:17happen in our lives.
- 2:18Until now, I wasn't sure of that,
- 2:20either.
- 2:50I just see it as an uh, chance to share
- 2:53my faith and my story.
- 3:06Three weeks after the attack, uh, I was
- 3:08down at the beach watching all my
- 3:09friends surf.
- 3:11Bethany just really wanted to surf, even
- 3:13though she wasn't supposed to.
- 3:15Cuz we kind of had planned for her to
- 3:17surf on Thanksgiving Day.
- 3:20But, uh, the day before Thanksgiving,
- 3:21she called us and she says, "I'm going
- 3:23out already."
- 3:24So, we both down on the beach. We got
- 3:26down there and Bethany, uh,
- 3:28she was amping to go out, like, just
- 3:30couldn't wait to go out.
- 3:32There was somebody had a longboard. I
- 3:33don't know if you remember whose it was,
- 3:34but she just paddled out on it, you
- 3:36know, just to see her back in the water.
- 3:38She still had a bandage on her arm.
- 3:40Good for her.
- 3:56So we slammed out and my dad had a
- 3:57stance he kicked out next to Bethany and
- 4:00basically she didn't want any help. I
- 4:01realized how hard it was going to be cuz
- 4:03she was on a longboard and
- 4:05just getting to her feet and catching
- 4:06waves it was a real
- 4:08a real struggle but
- 4:10one thing she's always been is a very
- 4:11determined young girl.
- 4:13My first two waves I tried to get up and
- 4:16it was just it was hard. It was
- 4:18definitely hard and I was just trying to
- 4:19figure it out and I I couldn't do it and
- 4:22I was
- 4:23it just kind of scared me cuz I thought
- 4:24I might not be able to do this.
- 4:28The first couple waves, you know, she
- 4:30couldn't really get the balance, you
- 4:31know, sit she she couldn't really figure
- 4:33out where to put her hand.
- 4:35My dad offered help and I was like, "No,
- 4:37I got to do this on my own."
- 4:40And so the long she got up on her third
- 4:42wave.
- 5:02When I saw her up on those third, fourth
- 5:04waves, you know, just doing it I was
- 5:06just so stoked for her man just cuz I
- 5:08could see the smile that brought into
- 5:10her heart.
- 5:12It was so special cuz it was like a rush
- 5:15and even though it was like a small tiny
- 5:17junk wave it was like
- 5:20the rush was as good or even better than
- 5:23any like good wave I had gotten before.
- 5:28It was just kind of like it all started
- 5:29to come together that day.
