  1. 0:00today we sit down with Bethany Hamilton
  2. 0:02she is an author a wife a mother a
  3. 0:04health and wellness Enthusiast and a
  4. 0:06professional Surfer Bethany was born and
  5. 0:08raised in Hawaii where she was well on
  6. 0:10her way towards becoming one of the best
  7. 0:12female Surfers of her time when tragedy
  8. 0:14struck on Halloween day
  9. 0:182003 then all of a sudden it just like I
  10. 0:21felt like a tug on my board right away I
  11. 0:24knew it was happening Bethany was
  12. 0:26attacked by a large tiger shark off the
  13. 0:28coast of kauwaii where she lost her
  14. 0:30entire left arm by the time she reached
  15. 0:32the hospital she had lost 60% of her
  16. 0:35blood but miraculously she survived you
  17. 0:38think you're going to surf again I think
  18. 0:41I know just 3 weeks after the horrific
  19. 0:44attack that almost ended her life with a
  20. 0:46bandage still on her arm Bethany was
  21. 0:49back in the water trying to recapture
  22. 0:51that dream of becoming a professional
  23. 0:53server in 2005 Bethany won her first
  24. 0:57national surfing title and in 2007 Just
  25. 1:004 years after she lost her arm her
  26. 1:02ultimate goal was achieved when she
  27. 1:04started competing on the professional
  28. 1:06surfing circuit more recently Bethany
  29. 1:09found herself in the news yet again only
  30. 1:11this time not everyone was standing
  31. 1:13behind her Hawaii Pro Surfer Bethany
  32. 1:15Hamilton says she will not compete in
  33. 1:17World surf League events because of its
  34. 1:19new rule that will allow transgender
  35. 1:21women to compete in women's surfing
  36. 1:24events Bethany is the kind of woman that
  37. 1:26stands up for what she believes in even
  38. 1:27when it's difficult she is demonstrating
  39. 1:30that you don't need easy you just need
  40. 1:32possible so without further Ado Bethany
  41. 1:36Hamilton Aloha Bethy yeah good to be
  42. 1:40here I had to throw in the aloho we were
  43. 1:41talking the car on the way over here I'm
  44. 1:43all about using the the pigeon when I
  45. 1:45can I got myoha shirt on today so he
  46. 1:47wore this for you I came prepared I love
  47. 1:49it but we are honored to have you here
  48. 1:52thank you so much for agreeing to do
  49. 1:53this really appreciate it yeah you have
  50. 1:56been one of our Dream guests from the
  51. 1:57very beginning a thank you we were
  52. 2:00talking about like who do we just really
  53. 2:01want to have on and then Bethany
  54. 2:03Hamilton was just like I have to have
  55. 2:04her because we've been huge fans for 20
  56. 2:07years uh something really funny is NAA
  57. 2:10who's our oldest their first daddy
  58. 2:12daughter date was to go see Soul Surfer
  59. 2:14a so sweet that was their first day out
  60. 2:17and they went to lunch and they saw Soul
  61. 2:19Surfer and then we bought the DVD and
  62. 2:22watched it 500 times and the soundtrack
  63. 2:25so yeah getting to know the real Bethany
  64. 2:28has been really interesting a thanks and
  65. 2:32you guys love sharpi and we love sharpi
  66. 2:34so yes oh my gosh I had sharpet through
  67. 2:38most of my childhood now we're dogless
  68. 2:41but I've always had a thing for the
  69. 2:44wrinkly rly Poli yeah I love every yeah
  70. 2:48we lost ours about four weeks ago he was
  71. 2:5114 and so we are also dogless but it was
  72. 2:55just it's always so fun to see like
  73. 2:57anytime that you had them like in your
  74. 2:59documentary to see the sharp we like
  75. 3:02oh cuz you don't meet very many people
  76. 3:04that have them no it's kind of more of a
  77. 3:06rare dog but I feel like in Hawaii
  78. 3:09there's a lot of like pit bulls and like
  79. 3:12just bigger dogs like more hunting es
  80. 3:17sort of dogs and then so my mom and I
  81. 3:19fell in love with Sharpes and we had a
  82. 3:22few over the years yeah I grew up with
  83. 3:25them too I started getting them in the
  84. 3:26'90s and then I talked him into it love
  85. 3:29them my favorite dog of all time for
  86. 3:31sure you got to Surf with one of your
  87. 3:33dogs correct at least one of your dogs
  88. 3:35um you know taking sharp is surfing
  89. 3:38they're not exactly water dogs so I was
  90. 3:41going to say our dog give the water it
  91. 3:43was hectic we were usually kind of uh
  92. 3:46you know I don't know uh getting
  93. 3:48scratched or um just holding our dog on
  94. 3:52the board making sure they didn't fall
  95. 3:54off yeah yeah yeah we got to see a
  96. 3:57couple shots was that your actual dog in
  97. 3:59the movie yes so we had our dog act as
  98. 4:03the dog in the movie Soul Surfer and
  99. 4:05that was not um great on the director
  100. 4:08because our dog wasn't super well
  101. 4:10trained like you know set dogs yeah but
  102. 4:14it was fun and we made it work yeah I
  103. 4:16think that's amazing so how is it having
  104. 4:19somebody play you in a movie it's
  105. 4:23interesting I mean I am definitely a
  106. 4:26rare human in that not many people are
  107. 4:29are still living their life while having
  108. 4:32an actor play them so when we filmed um
  109. 4:36Soul Sur for the movie I was like 19 or
  110. 4:4020 and so I still had a lot of Life to
  111. 4:43Live you know and so it was weird
  112. 4:47picking out someone to play me I
  113. 4:48remember at the time it was like the top
  114. 4:51picks were Dakota Fanning h a Sophia Rob
  115. 4:54who ended up playing me and a couple
  116. 4:56other girls
  117. 4:58and yeah it's just weird because too a
  118. 5:02lot of young people will like become a
  119. 5:05fan of the actor when I'm like the real
  120. 5:08person but I think like there's a bit of
  121. 5:10a crossover there too and
  122. 5:14so yeah I don't know it's weird yeah I
  123. 5:16can't imagine it 19 I know there're so
  124. 5:19it's so funny because like I they watch
  125. 5:22the movie our kids watch the movie and
  126. 5:24then when we watch Unstoppable they were
  127. 5:26like oh that's Bethany Hamilton so it
  128. 5:29was so for them and so they were very
  129. 5:31excited to meet the real Bethany
  130. 5:33Hamilton because the actress that plays
  131. 5:36you they're like oh that's AOA girl or
  132. 5:38that's that's a Willy Wonka girl that
  133. 5:40choose the bubble gum so so different
  134. 5:43but yeah it's been fun um are you still
  135. 5:46competitively
  136. 5:47surfing um yeah I mean I did an event
  137. 5:50this year um but I don't have any events
  138. 5:53on my schedule right now I'm still
  139. 5:55surfing at a high level but I also have
  140. 5:57four children so I have like a uni unque
  141. 6:00season I would say I'm like mostly done
  142. 6:02but if an event pops up here and there
  143. 6:04I'm down I also prefer to compete in
  144. 6:08like really good waves so a lot of the
  145. 6:09events aren't held in good waves so I'm
  146. 6:12kind of like okay if an event pops up in
  147. 6:14good waves then I'm excited to jump in
  148. 6:17yeah what is your preference what is a
  149. 6:18good wave to you I mean preferably on a
  150. 6:21reef growing up in Hawaii we have just
  151. 6:24such incredible waves it's kind of hard
  152. 6:26to leave because you go elsewhere and
  153. 6:29like I competing from the age of uh 10
  154. 6:33to now
  155. 6:36internationally um over the years you
  156. 6:39know and we would travel all over the
  157. 6:41world and then the waves were always
  158. 6:44just subpar compared to where I am from
  159. 6:47and where I grew up and the type of
  160. 6:49waves I'm you know always surfing and
  161. 6:51so um but yeah I just really like strong
  162. 6:55powerful Reef waves in particular and um
  163. 6:59but I mean a good wave is a good wave
  164. 7:01wherever you end up going like I've had
  165. 7:03incredible waves all over the world so
  166. 7:06yeah it's just such a different
  167. 7:07lifestyle or like our dream is you know
  168. 7:10to not go to Disney World but to go to
  169. 7:13like you know an epic surf spot yeah
  170. 7:16that's so amazing you know what's crazy
  171. 7:17is growing up in Hawaii myself is
  172. 7:19actually became aware of you when at a
  173. 7:21very young age for me I remember seeing
  174. 7:23you uh competing I think it was
  175. 7:24somewhere in wakei um in like a some
  176. 7:26kind of a Youth Event um in like the
  177. 7:30early mid mid 90s I guess get R it was
  178. 7:32on like Oceanic Cable I remember
  179. 7:33watching probably CH like the China Ura
  180. 7:36classic women's event or I did a bunch
  181. 7:40of wyi events and I remember like it was
  182. 7:43crazy because this was before I lost my
  183. 7:45arm and I had um I got on the news so it
  184. 7:50was like big for me as like a little
  185. 7:52girl you know and then I was like in the
  186. 7:53newspaper too yeah so that's what was so
  187. 7:57crazy about when I did lose my arm I was
  188. 8:00pretty well known within at least Hawaii
  189. 8:03and then even I had finished second in
  190. 8:05the national title um at 13 with with
  191. 8:09two
  192. 8:10arms uh 18 and under so it was like a
  193. 8:14really successful result for a
  194. 8:1713-year-old and so my name was kind of
  195. 8:19already buzzing so when my event
  196. 8:21happened like it went like super viral
  197. 8:25not social media viral just like news
  198. 8:28like all the time
  199. 8:30because at that time I think my space
  200. 8:32was just getting going or maybe maybe
  201. 8:34early days Facebook but it wasn't really
  202. 8:37like a big thing yeah yeah it was just
  203. 8:39where people shared pictures and they
  204. 8:40had the song playing on your profile
  205. 8:42yeah it wasn't like it is now so and you
  206. 8:45even imagine what that wave of media
  207. 8:48would have been like had it been so much
  208. 8:50later oh my gosh yeah now but then it
  209. 8:52would have like been a wave and then
  210. 8:54it's instantly over like one day later
  211. 8:57that's true that's true yeah I remember
  212. 8:59remember seeing I'm like Oprah and Ellen
  213. 9:01and everything you were so little you're
  214. 9:03just a little girl so that had to have
  215. 9:05been so scary did you enjoy doing all
  216. 9:08that media back then no I hated doing
  217. 9:11interviews but I did have a heart for
  218. 9:14other people and so once I started
  219. 9:16surfing with one
  220. 9:17arm um I think just my story went even
  221. 9:22more viral because people attached on to
  222. 9:25like that courage and the ab the
  223. 9:28willingness to keep trying and to
  224. 9:31overcome and so it was amazing like I
  225. 9:34would receive letters from all of all
  226. 9:36over the world all different walks of
  227. 9:38lives all different types of passions
  228. 9:40all different types of
  229. 9:42challenges and so that really like
  230. 9:46encouraged me I guess to share my story
  231. 9:48you know I think my mom and dad kind of
  232. 9:50led me along too like hey look we can be
  233. 9:53an encouragement so let's go and share
  234. 9:56your story and So eventually fast
  235. 9:58forward I went to writing my book which
  236. 10:01I didn't really write it I was a part of
  237. 10:03that Journey but it was like kind of
  238. 10:05like my mom and my pastor friend who is
  239. 10:07a writer and um in my head as my teenage
  240. 10:12self was just like all I wanted to do
  241. 10:14you know was be with my friends and go
  242. 10:16surfing um but then I wrote and then we
  243. 10:19worked on the book and I was like okay I
  244. 10:20don't have to tell my story now cuz
  245. 10:22people can just read it yeah but then
  246. 10:25there's the whole like you got to do a
  247. 10:27media tour now little one and you didn't
  248. 10:29know that I didn't understand that
  249. 10:32concept and so literally I'm like flying
  250. 10:34in New York City I did like 30
  251. 10:37interviews or more and I was so mad I
  252. 10:42was just so angry was like get me out of
  253. 10:46this place like I just wanted to go home
  254. 10:48and go surf so surfing to me was so much
  255. 10:51more than just like my Sport and passion
  256. 10:54it was also like a little bit of an
  257. 10:56outlet and safety place and like an esap
  258. 10:59escape from everything on land and I
  259. 11:01would still say the same thing to this
  260. 11:03day like getting in the ocean I'm lucky
  261. 11:06enough as a mom to like my hubby will
  262. 11:08let me get out there and so I'll sneak
  263. 11:11away and get in the ocean and it's just
  264. 11:13such a place of Rejuvenation and like I
  265. 11:16don't know place to be present and to
  266. 11:19just be creative and enjoy God's
  267. 11:21beautiful creation and so from teenagers
  268. 11:25to Mom life it's like my little Safe
  269. 11:28Haven yeah I mean sense it's almost like
  270. 11:30the world can't get you out there yeah
  271. 11:32and specifically like obviously we can
  272. 11:34bring things in our mind but when you're
  273. 11:36up and riding on a wave you're not
  274. 11:39thinking about the list of things to do
  275. 11:42or the mountain of laundry or the
  276. 11:44interview coming up you're just thinking
  277. 11:46about riding that wave and so I'm not
  278. 11:50like really like a new Agy but I I do
  279. 11:52love the idea of just being like fully
  280. 11:54present and now with like technology and
  281. 11:57devices and the endless to-do list and
  282. 12:00like the responding the emails and text
  283. 12:02messages and calling this person and
  284. 12:04that person like I think everyone at
  285. 12:07times just feels distracted or pulled in
  286. 12:10some direction maybe it's social media
  287. 12:13maybe it's binging TV shows um whatever
  288. 12:16it may be like I love that the ocean is
  289. 12:20a place where I can't bring anything
  290. 12:22with me especially when I'm up in
  291. 12:24writing a wave and it's just a place to
  292. 12:26like kind of rejuvenate and um kind of
  293. 12:29slow down so I think for me like growing
  294. 12:33up in Hawaii I grew up with like a
  295. 12:36really raw natural childhood like I
  296. 12:39wasn't on a device I was like climbing
  297. 12:42lava rocks diving into the ocean looking
  298. 12:45for shells riding Turtles like body
  299. 12:49surfing like doing so many fun things
  300. 12:52and I like look at our young people now
  301. 12:54and I'm just like what are we doing to
  302. 12:57our young children like now you see
  303. 13:00children on the side of the road like
  304. 13:01I'll just be driving by and then the
  305. 13:03other day we we were heading to the
  306. 13:05airport we in uh the East Coast Delaware
  307. 13:08and 6:00 in the morning you see two
  308. 13:10teenage kids just hunched over looking
  309. 13:13at their devices they didn't look happy
  310. 13:16they didn't look like they were being
  311. 13:17creative they didn't look like they were
  312. 13:19healthy either and to me that's so
  313. 13:22devastating to see the way our people
  314. 13:25are growing up and the lack of um
  315. 13:28inspiration they have for life so to say
  316. 13:32and so yeah I don't know where I was
  317. 13:34going there I just like I'm so
  318. 13:37passionate about being in nature because
  319. 13:39I think nature brings out the best of us
  320. 13:42so I love that and I'm with you that's
  321. 13:44everything I miss about Hawaii growing
  322. 13:45up there not that I was surfing on your
  323. 13:47level but just spending time out on the
  324. 13:48ocean was a place of uh healing like you
  325. 13:50said finding God and U you know just
  326. 13:52sitting out between sets waiting on the
  327. 13:54next set to roll in a nice Sunset just
  328. 13:56um yeah devoting that that time and
  329. 13:59attention to God and creation and being
  330. 14:01very grateful it's what I miss maybe the
  331. 14:03most about for sure um love you had to
  332. 14:06say there about our young people you are
  333. 14:07running a camp correct for moms and
  334. 14:09daughters yeah so the last couple of
  335. 14:11years I started a motherdaughter
  336. 14:14mentorship program and the idea is to
  337. 14:17like talk about all the hard subjects
  338. 14:20like anxiety depression Health um dating
  339. 14:26drugs and alcohol um conflict the mother
  340. 14:30daughter relationship and relationships
  341. 14:33across the board and then like adding in
  342. 14:36a inperson element so some people come
  343. 14:39and do like a retreat or a surf day with
  344. 14:41me and it's just been really cool to be
  345. 14:44a part of it I have a heart for teenage
  346. 14:46um girls and teenagers across the board
  347. 14:49because I have three boys but I look it
  348. 14:52back on my life and you know I don't
  349. 14:54really like celebrating myself so to say
  350. 14:57but like I look at 13 18-year-old
  351. 14:59Bethany and I'm like why was she so
  352. 15:01resilient and I really attribute a lot
  353. 15:03of it to one my faith in God and but two
  354. 15:08like my relationship with my mom in
  355. 15:11particular and the way she and I um
  356. 15:14bonded um in my early tween and then
  357. 15:18teenage years and just just having that
  358. 15:21foundation in my own like home and my
  359. 15:24dad too I mean my dad was super awesome
  360. 15:27he was just awesome in his own way like
  361. 15:28he was more like the sport dad like you
  362. 15:31know he would do special like surf trips
  363. 15:33with me or you know we'd drive to the
  364. 15:35other side of the island at 4 in the
  365. 15:37morning and go surfing and um just like
  366. 15:40special things like that but um yeah I
  367. 15:44feel like culture now pulls children
  368. 15:47away from their parents and their family
  369. 15:51and this
  370. 15:53unknowingly separates that Bond and that
  371. 15:56relationship and so are young people are
  372. 15:59way less confident and way less um kind
  373. 16:03of sure of themselves so that when the
  374. 16:05conflict hits they're maybe not as
  375. 16:08resilient as they could be obviously
  376. 16:11there's always going to be that
  377. 16:12resilient one and we all have a bit of a
  378. 16:14resilient in us but um yeah I just for
  379. 16:18me I just wanted to recreate something
  380. 16:20like that and just a a space for like if
  381. 16:24Mom is struggling with her daughter it's
  382. 16:26a space for them to like devote time to
  383. 16:29one another and to like rekindle that
  384. 16:31relationship that is so and I have a lot
  385. 16:34of motion motion like there we go we
  386. 16:38made it go so funny so I have like big
  387. 16:42dreams cuz I'm a mom of three boys too
  388. 16:44and my husband's amazing so I hope to do
  389. 16:47like a Father's son one day um plus all
  390. 16:50the moms are like can you do one for my
  391. 16:52son and my husband and so yeah it's been
  392. 16:54a cool Journey though just seeing like
  393. 16:57young girls lives transform like the big
  394. 16:59thing I've noticed is there's a lot of
  395. 17:01anxiety in our young people and
  396. 17:03depression and kind of hopelessness and
  397. 17:06so trying to like reillumination
  398. 17:29you are very resilient and you are very
  399. 17:31like this badass girl that stands up for
  400. 17:34what she believes in but at the same
  401. 17:36time it's it wasn't just a story of like
  402. 17:38up up up success like you show when
  403. 17:42you're frustrated and you show and you
  404. 17:45talk about like I would come in crying I
  405. 17:47would come in feeling defeated and
  406. 17:48that's real and it's so helpful to hear
  407. 17:51somebody that we look up to say I had
  408. 17:55those days too where I just felt so
  409. 17:57defeated and
  410. 17:59I it there's it's just brings a lot of
  411. 18:01Hope because I have days where I feel
  412. 18:03defeated at the end of the day and so
  413. 18:05it's nice to hear that it's not
  414. 18:08relatable you know when it's just up and
  415. 18:10away and so I have that little there's
  416. 18:13this little clip of you when you were
  417. 18:14still in the hospital when somebody I
  418. 18:16don't know who it was asked you like
  419. 18:17what's next Bethany and you just said I
  420. 18:20don't know yeah and it broke my mom
  421. 18:23heart because I think to hear your kids
  422. 18:24say that you'd feel like you'd want to
  423. 18:26fix that yes totally
  424. 18:29I know my mom did such a good job of
  425. 18:31navigating that but my mom actually
  426. 18:33didn't think I could surf again really
  427. 18:36my mom was like let's move to the
  428. 18:37mountains and you can learn to snowboard
  429. 18:39or how about you take on photography she
  430. 18:41was trying to fix it but she didn't
  431. 18:43think I would be able to serve and so
  432. 18:46that was like an interesting like little
  433. 18:48mom moment where as amazing as my mom
  434. 18:51was she didn't she couldn't she didn't
  435. 18:54have the resilience that even I had and
  436. 18:57so once I set myom mind on wanting to
  437. 19:00learn how to surf I uh I was just all in
  438. 19:05it was like I'm going to try this I
  439. 19:07don't know if I'll be able to do it but
  440. 19:09I want to try and so I popped up on my
  441. 19:12third wave um the first day back in the
  442. 19:15water and rode it all the way to the
  443. 19:17beach it was just like a small little
  444. 19:19simple wave but it felt like one of the
  445. 19:20best waves in my life and then from
  446. 19:24there there was just no turning back and
  447. 19:27I you know I couldn't have dreamed my
  448. 19:29future I just was willing to try and put
  449. 19:32myself out there and do what I didn't
  450. 19:33know anyone else had done like I didn't
  451. 19:35know anyone with one arm let alone a one
  452. 19:38arm Surfer and so for me it was very
  453. 19:41much like you know exploring unknown
  454. 19:44territory yeah and you did actually end
  455. 19:46up winning at Nationals didn't you yeah
  456. 19:48so I went back to competing um the the
  457. 19:53following I lost my arm in October
  458. 19:56started competing in January made the
  459. 19:59national final that next summer and then
  460. 20:02the summer following I won a national
  461. 20:05title so that was pretty crazy I'm
  462. 20:07pretty cool that had to have just been
  463. 20:09amazing after everything and working
  464. 20:11your way up to just like yes I can do it
  465. 20:15yeah and I was too like I was competing
  466. 20:19against all the people I'd grown up with
  467. 20:22and you know a lot of those girls went
  468. 20:24on to win national or World titles so
  469. 20:27there wasn't El of like maybe I didn't
  470. 20:29fully reach my potential that I could
  471. 20:31have if I had had two arms but then I
  472. 20:34look at my life from a nons surfer
  473. 20:37perspective and just the ripple effect
  474. 20:39that my life has had on the world around
  475. 20:42me and it's just so beautiful to see how
  476. 20:45God has taken something so awful and
  477. 20:47turned it into something so beautiful
  478. 20:49and um yeah I'm just grateful for the
  479. 20:53life that I do have yeah it's it's a
  480. 20:55beautiful example to people to just
  481. 20:57overcome and Ne go for it and do you
  482. 21:00ever sit there and wonder what would
  483. 21:01have been or do you just not let your
  484. 21:03brain go there or I don't really go
  485. 21:05there too much cuz I don't really feel
  486. 21:07like that's very healthy yeah um and I
  487. 21:11look at my life that I do have and I
  488. 21:13have like four beautiful children a
  489. 21:16wonderful husband and just so much that
  490. 21:19I look forward to every single day and
  491. 21:21I'm just like I might not have any of
  492. 21:23that my life could be totally different
  493. 21:26you know I think of like my peers and
  494. 21:28surfing I'm like the only one well one
  495. 21:31of my friends has a child but not many
  496. 21:34of them have children and I just feel
  497. 21:37like that's like the greatest blessing
  498. 21:38in life is my my children and I'm just
  499. 21:42like w what would my life have looked
  500. 21:44like you know I guess I could think like
  501. 21:46that but I almost am like whoa I hope
  502. 21:49that I would have even like you know
  503. 21:52hopefully had a child by now
  504. 21:56um anyway I don't know where I'm going
  505. 21:58with that like I
  506. 22:00just I'm grateful I feel like God's plan
  507. 22:02for my life is better than my own yeah
  508. 22:05sometimes he does disrupt our plans
  509. 22:07doesn't he he's it's almost like he
  510. 22:09protects us from going down the wrong
  511. 22:11way even if it's like this horrible road
  512. 22:13block that like why would you do this to
  513. 22:15me but he's actually putting you in a
  514. 22:17different direction that is so much
  515. 22:19better speaking of your husband Adam
  516. 22:21he's from Kansas originally is that
  517. 22:22correct so he grew up in Kansas and he
  518. 22:25was supposed to be here but our little
  519. 22:27guys got sick and I don't know we didn't
  520. 22:30feel like dealing with a babysitter when
  521. 22:32they're sick they've been pretty
  522. 22:33clingy and and a sweet and beautiful way
  523. 22:37of course but um he grew up in Kansas
  524. 22:41and so now he lives in Hawaii cuz once
  525. 22:44he met me I'm like I ain't leaving so
  526. 22:46you're either staying or we're not going
  527. 22:48to work it seems like that'd be a pretty
  528. 22:49easy choice though you know it has its
  529. 22:53pros and cons like I think it was a hard
  530. 22:55adjustment for him after like a few
  531. 22:58years um like he did really well the
  532. 23:01first couple years he was really
  533. 23:02immersed in the culture he was working
  534. 23:05with a organization called young life
  535. 23:07and he was starting it up on the west
  536. 23:09side of kwaii so it's like kind of like
  537. 23:11the harder area of the island like a lot
  538. 23:14of family abuse a lot of hardship and
  539. 23:17like I would say some quite a bit of
  540. 23:19child neglect um and so here comes this
  541. 23:23big 6'4 like super loving super friendly
  542. 23:28um
  543. 23:29you know Caucasian guy and he's like
  544. 23:32coaching football he's doing substitute
  545. 23:35teaching he's like fully immersed in the
  546. 23:38culture and so that was kind of cool
  547. 23:40because I grew up I was born and raised
  548. 23:43in haai and so there's definitely a
  549. 23:45cultural difference you know a lot of
  550. 23:47people don't really understand and so it
  551. 23:50was nice when I met him he understood
  552. 23:54Hawaii he was like really thrown into
  553. 23:56the thick of it right early on
  554. 23:59and but yeah I mean it was a hard
  555. 24:01adjustment phase for sure and you know
  556. 24:04being away from his family is for sure
  557. 24:06hard but I would say now in hindsight
  558. 24:09he's stoked and he loves it and he surfs
  559. 24:12a bit but he doesn't have like quite the
  560. 24:14passion that I do so it's nice for me
  561. 24:17cuz I get priority he's like okay you go
  562. 24:19surf are firing and I'll get leftovers
  563. 24:23if there's any um you know anything left
  564. 24:25yeah and he'll be on the beach playing
  565. 24:27with the kids or the baby ways yeah so I
  566. 24:30mean um but the thing is like being from
  567. 24:33Kansas he's a super athlete and then he
  568. 24:35like going into the ocean he's super
  569. 24:37humbled cuz the ocean is just a whole
  570. 24:40different ball game it doesn't matter
  571. 24:41how athletic you are surfing is super
  572. 24:44hard and so he was definitely humbled by
  573. 24:47surfing and um we joke lately I'm like
  574. 24:50are our almost nine-year-old is going to
  575. 24:52be better than you any day now H good I
  576. 24:56saw him on The Little Wave he's good
  577. 24:59he's super good I'm like hun you got
  578. 25:01like two more ears and TOS is going to
  579. 25:03be spraying you in the face it's amazing
  580. 25:06he definitely got mom's jeans yes crazy
  581. 25:09so I came up I was just you know going
  582. 25:12through my Instagram and I saw a photo
  583. 25:15of you standing there looking beautiful
  584. 25:17in your bikini with I stand up for what
  585. 25:20I believe in I was like what happened
  586. 25:21cuz I knew like that it was such a
  587. 25:24strong post but you always do everything
  588. 25:27with such Grace like you can be fired up
  589. 25:30about something but yet you approach it
  590. 25:33without I don't know just so gracefully
  591. 25:35I'm need to learn from you cuz I get all
  592. 25:37heated and then I'm
  593. 25:39like so something that we've talked
  594. 25:41about quite a bit actually on our
  595. 25:42podcast we actually talked about you and
  596. 25:44Riley and was when all of a sudden Title
  597. 25:479 starts changing so you've already been
  598. 25:50through so much learning how to surf
  599. 25:52with one arm becoming a pro Surfer
  600. 25:55you've overcome all these things and all
  601. 25:57of a sudden
  602. 25:58you he you get an email saying hey
  603. 26:02biological males may be surfing against
  604. 26:05women and like what is what does that do
  605. 26:08to your psyche as yeah well I mean we
  606. 26:12want to take a quick moment to thank the

  625. 26:42members they then package it all up
  626. 26:44license it and then sell it to other
  627. 26:46data Brokers companies and even scammers
  628. 26:49in just the last eight months Del me
  629. 26:50found hundreds of different data Brokers
  630. 26:51with our personal information and their
  631. 26:53privacy experts took it from there
  632. 26:55they've removed over 700 listings with
  633. 26:56our personal data and best part is they
  634. 26:58continue to scan the web making sure our

  648. 27:22plans we want to thank Del me for
  649. 27:24sponsoring this episode of the podcast
  650. 27:25let's get back to our conversation with
  651. 27:26Bethany Hamilton well I mean we had kind
  652. 27:29of foreseen it coming because it was
  653. 27:31already happening in a lot of other
  654. 27:33sports and I had sens that it was going
  655. 27:35to come to surfing but then the way it
  656. 27:38did come was just in an email one
  657. 27:40morning like oh we rule change like
  658. 27:43biological meals can not compete with
  659. 27:45females as long as their testosterone is
  660. 27:47at this level and they've been taking a
  661. 27:50certain sort of hormone replacement for
  662. 27:52like a minimum of 3 months or I don't
  663. 27:55remember the exact details I'm probably
  664. 27:57getting that wrong so you guys can go
  665. 27:58fact check yourself um but so I received
  666. 28:03that and I'm surfing in an event in aahu
  667. 28:06and at the point at that time or and
  668. 28:09still there hasn't been any like major
  669. 28:12males competing in the main League of
  670. 28:16female um performance surfing so
  671. 28:19shortboard there is one male competing
  672. 28:22in the longboard Division and that
  673. 28:25individual is um smoking chicks so it's
  674. 28:29super
  675. 28:30frustrating but and that individual also
  676. 28:33won a male event like a couple years
  677. 28:35before he won the female event so to me
  678. 28:38that's just like what in the world is
  679. 28:40going on and why are we so okay with
  680. 28:43this um but to me I just like surfing is
  681. 28:47a sport where it no doubt like males
  682. 28:51surf substantially better than the
  683. 28:53females their strength their paddling
  684. 28:55abilities their strength in their leg
  685. 28:58and their torso it's just substantially
  686. 29:00different like while there are a handful
  687. 29:03of girls that are absolutely like we're
  688. 29:05all like incredible in our own way and
  689. 29:07we're pushing our sport in such an
  690. 29:09incredible ways but um I don't know why
  691. 29:12I feel like I have to even talk about
  692. 29:14that because it doesn't really matter at
  693. 29:16the end of the day yeah but um yeah it's
  694. 29:19just wild to me and it was pretty lonely
  695. 29:22I was basically the only female surfer
  696. 29:24that spoke up about like against it and
  697. 29:28the thing I've been pondering lately is
  698. 29:30like why is everyone so scared like the
  699. 29:33fact that Society is scared to speak up
  700. 29:36about something that is important and
  701. 29:38that does matter for a you know this
  702. 29:42next generation of upand cominging ath
  703. 29:45athletic girls like it's so wrong to me
  704. 29:48that Society is at this point of like
  705. 29:51being too scared to speak what they
  706. 29:53believe because they think that they're
  707. 29:55going to be considered mean or phobic or
  708. 30:00um you know an awful person and so that
  709. 30:05to me is really sad and unfortunate and
  710. 30:08I also feel like there's a need to call
  711. 30:10out like none of the previous women
  712. 30:13World Champs spoke out for female sports
  713. 30:17and I'm like you guys literally have
  714. 30:19nothing to lose and they're not willing
  715. 30:22to speak up for the next generation and
  716. 30:26so I think there's this element of like
  717. 30:29you don't know what you got until you
  718. 30:31lose it and so at some point like if
  719. 30:34things don't change at some point the
  720. 30:37girls are going to lose what they've got
  721. 30:39right and so that will be super sad but
  722. 30:42maybe it has to get to that point for
  723. 30:44the girls to realize that you can't just
  724. 30:47um be laxidasical and let go of
  725. 30:50something that you have just in the
  726. 30:52namesake of like the loudest voices um
  727. 30:56who think that they can just control
  728. 30:58Society right yeah because it is a vocal
  729. 31:01minority I think we could all
  730. 31:02acknowledge that and amongst your female
  731. 31:04competitors was there was the General
  732. 31:06consensus that hey this is this is
  733. 31:09garbage yeah I think probably at least
  734. 31:1270% um are pretty like not for it maybe
  735. 31:17more I would hope more but you know some
  736. 31:20people just feel like they're being mean
  737. 31:22and so they're almost like being
  738. 31:24brainwashed to think like oh I'm being
  739. 31:26mean if I don't in include everyone but
  740. 31:29the truth is like you're not being mean
  741. 31:31like it's just simply not fair game for
  742. 31:34males to compete in the female Division
  743. 31:36and you girls will be taken advantage of
  744. 31:39if you don't speak up because the
  745. 31:43strength differences are just undeniable
  746. 31:47they are what they are yeah it's the
  747. 31:48most infuriating part of it for me is
  748. 31:49that every time something like this has
  749. 31:51rear its ugly head is is the the silenc
  750. 31:53amongst those who should be the most
  751. 31:55outspoken so credit to you for for in
  752. 31:58and I will say like the world surf
  753. 32:00League made everyone sign a
  754. 32:01non-disclosure agreement at the start of
  755. 32:03the year and they that we they would the
  756. 32:07athletes would be fined
  757. 32:09$10,000 and that they would be um
  758. 32:12removed from the world surf league so
  759. 32:15there is an element of like losing their
  760. 32:17entire career and there are no males in
  761. 32:20like the main surf League competing in
  762. 32:22the female division yet uh they are in
  763. 32:25the longboard but um
  764. 32:28yeah so there's kind of an element of
  765. 32:30like well there's no risk quite yet you
  766. 32:32know so let's just be like silent and
  767. 32:35milk it while we can you know yeah I
  768. 32:37always wonder when you see it happening
  769. 32:39in the high schools and the colleges
  770. 32:41it's I don't know how parents bring
  771. 32:43their daughters to an event that they
  772. 32:45know they can't win like why not why
  773. 32:47doesn't the whole team just say no and
  774. 32:49then maybe this nonsense would stop
  775. 32:50totally totally you know like all it
  776. 32:53takes is everyone saying no and so the
  777. 32:55lack of unity is the problem
  778. 32:58and I would not allow my daughter to
  779. 33:00compete against a male if it was um in a
  780. 33:05setting that was truly unfair cuz for
  781. 33:08example I've competed in a male event uh
  782. 33:11in Bali at ping pang and I chose to
  783. 33:15enter that event like it's more of a
  784. 33:17specialty event and like it's totally
  785. 33:19fine like but like to take you
  786. 33:23know a a potential like women's world
  787. 33:27title like that is a major issue
  788. 33:30scholarships you see these little boys
  789. 33:34just smoking past the girls and
  790. 33:36different running events beating them by
  791. 33:38seconds and taking scholarships and
  792. 33:41titles away from them and it just is so
  793. 33:44frustrating to see and I don't
  794. 33:45understand where the parents' heads are
  795. 33:46at yeah totally I think it's just the
  796. 33:50society as a whole being very
  797. 33:52laxidasical
  798. 33:53and it takes work and effort like I put
  799. 33:57more like mind time into that than I
  800. 34:01would have liked like you know I have a
  801. 34:02lot going on I have four children it's
  802. 34:04not like I want to be thinking about
  803. 34:06this subject all the time and it's not
  804. 34:09like I'm out there campaigning all the
  805. 34:11time for female sports but I just like
  806. 34:14make it known that I'm not for this and
  807. 34:18um just try to empower our next
  808. 34:20Generation to like know is a healthy
  809. 34:23boundary to have in the right time and
  810. 34:25place and if you can't learn to say no
  811. 34:29like your life is going to have a lot of
  812. 34:31problems and you will be taken advantage
  813. 34:33of in a lot of different ways and so
  814. 34:36it's important to teach our young people
  815. 34:37to say no um in a lot of different ways
  816. 34:41um you know it's so true and this is
  817. 34:44just one way yeah that is so true that's
  818. 34:46such a good thing to teach especially
  819. 34:47our girls but just children in general
  820. 34:50the power of know can bring so much
  821. 34:51peace into your life you don't do things
  822. 34:53you don't want to do you're you don't
  823. 34:55find yourself at parties where you're
  824. 34:56like why am I here like so much power in
  825. 34:58no you're still learning sometimes I
  826. 35:01know sometimes I still end up at parties
  827. 35:03I don't want to be at
  828. 35:04going yeah he's really good at saying no
  829. 35:08to things and then I start I try to be
  830. 35:11the and the Yang you know it's or you
  831. 35:14know like I feel like my husband and I
  832. 35:16are like that I'm like no and he's like
  833. 35:18I'm like no well I thought it was really
  834. 35:21Brave and I loved your one minute video
  835. 35:23you were so respectful in it and you
  836. 35:24really just posed questions you asked a
  837. 35:26lot of important and practical questions
  838. 35:29but there was a lot of backlash from the
  839. 35:31world what happened but there was a lot
  840. 35:34of backlash I tried not to look cuz I
  841. 35:36was like this isn't going to be good for
  842. 35:37my mental health yes and the fact that
  843. 35:41you know no matter what end of the
  844. 35:43spectrum of life you your World Views
  845. 35:46are at like being mean is not okay no
  846. 35:49and I saw some really dark sides of
  847. 35:51people like they're like I hope a shark
  848. 35:53bites off your other arm like I hope
  849. 35:55you're dead like I'm like w cuz I don't
  850. 35:58want males and female sports like y'all
  851. 36:00are
  852. 36:01insane but let's point out that no
  853. 36:04matter what side of the political
  854. 36:06Spectrum you're on there's mean people
  855. 36:09everywhere like in every um you know end
  856. 36:13of the spectrum so to say and so the
  857. 36:15unfortunate thing is a lot of times the
  858. 36:18mean people are the loudest ones but
  859. 36:20there's a lot of people in the middle
  860. 36:22that are actually just nice and um but
  861. 36:25you can still have your opinion and your
  862. 36:28World Views and to me it's like
  863. 36:31important to like talk about these sort
  864. 36:33of things with our children because you
  865. 36:35kind of don't want to become the mean
  866. 36:38loud person right but you also don't
  867. 36:40want to be the hyper silent passive
  868. 36:42person so it's like finding that balance
  869. 36:45in life and um having these important
  870. 36:48conversations with our children because
  871. 36:50the way our society is going right now
  872. 36:52and it's like lately there's been Wars
  873. 36:55going on on college campuses fighting
  874. 36:57about other Wars and I'm like wait how
  875. 36:59is this being productive like we're
  876. 37:01literally fighting here in the US about
  877. 37:04wars over somewhere else and while I
  878. 37:07think war is super unfortunate and I
  879. 37:09hate that there's death no matter what
  880. 37:11side of the war they're on I like I hate
  881. 37:14that there's innocent death um there's
  882. 37:17still like probably a better way to to
  883. 37:20you know work through these World issues
  884. 37:24um that isn't so aggressive and mean and
  885. 37:27harsh and you know maybe I've even felt
  886. 37:30like aggressive and harsh at times
  887. 37:33towards certain subjects but trying to
  888. 37:37work through that and like find my calm
  889. 37:39and peace again and like figure out a
  890. 37:42better way of facing these issues
  891. 37:44because it's not healthy for ourselves
  892. 37:46to also be like living in anger or you
  893. 37:50know loudness or frustration and so I
  894. 37:53feel like 2020 and 2021 taught me a lot
  895. 37:56about that because I don't want to be
  896. 37:58angry about things all the time like I
  897. 38:01want to be able to love my family well
  898. 38:03and if you're fuming with anger then
  899. 38:05that anger is going to come out in a lot
  900. 38:06of different ways and so being able to
  901. 38:09work through um our disappointments and
  902. 38:12our
  903. 38:13frustrations and try to you know find
  904. 38:15some level head yeah yeah that's that's
  905. 38:18probably like so much of the
  906. 38:20conversations that go on inside of your
  907. 38:21home or in your own head even but
  908. 38:24publicly the I think you're right on the
  909. 38:26money like you I know exactly where you
  910. 38:28stand you're so strong in it you're such
  911. 38:31a strong voice for it and sometimes it's
  912. 38:33just a picture but it's like yeah and
  913. 38:35but yet you do it in such a kind way and
  914. 38:38with so much respect and so much grace
  915. 38:40and they're going to get mad at you
  916. 38:41anyway it doesn't matter how you say it
  917. 38:44it's it just doesn't matter they're
  918. 38:46going to come for you anyway but there's
  919. 38:48so many people behind you they're just
  920. 38:51not they're not the loud people on
  921. 38:53Instagram and that was super interesting
  922. 38:55cuz I had people from like out of the
  923. 38:57Woodworks that would normally like never
  924. 38:59say hi to me and they're like out of the
  925. 39:02Woodworks like thank you so much so I
  926. 39:04feel like the majority was supporting me
  927. 39:07um like I would just have the randomst
  928. 39:09people come up to me like who normally
  929. 39:11would like kind of let me have my space
  930. 39:13like for example we shop at Costco and
  931. 39:15so Costco is like the place of social um
  932. 39:18function like you go there to socialize
  933. 39:21basically and in kwaii you end up like
  934. 39:23spending half of your time in there
  935. 39:25talking to someone and so I like after I
  936. 39:27spoke out against males and female
  937. 39:30sports it was just like people out of
  938. 39:31the Woodworks like thanks so much I'm
  939. 39:33glad someone's speaking up like you're
  940. 39:36welcome it wasn't very fun but we did it
  941. 39:40no it wouldn't be very fun but it's so
  942. 39:41important and there's so few people
  943. 39:43doing it that it's so refreshing to see
  944. 39:47yeah I recently met Riley gains and we
  945. 39:50didn't really get to talk too much but I
  946. 39:52heard her talking to a group she read
  947. 39:54her book to a group of young children
  948. 39:57and one of the things that stood out to
  949. 40:00me was like just how lonely she felt
  950. 40:02when she was started speaking out cuz
  951. 40:04she was like one of the loudest OG
  952. 40:07Originals like this is not okay like no
  953. 40:09way am I being okay with this and she's
  954. 40:12been like she's you know fullon
  955. 40:15campaigning for female sports like
  956. 40:18politically and um like just using her
  957. 40:21voice and um just hearing her say that I
  958. 40:24was like oh I'm so sorry like in my my
  959. 40:27heart and head I was like oh she was
  960. 40:29just felt so alone in her journey and so
  961. 40:33to me it's just a reminder that like
  962. 40:36sometimes we have to do uncomfortable
  963. 40:37things to see good and change happen and
  964. 40:41it's not going to last forever so no
  965. 40:44that's right yeah that's so true I think
  966. 40:46you're just on the right side of it but
  967. 40:48yeah when I heard that they weren't even
  968. 40:50allowing your name on the girls jerseys
  969. 40:52like um so for a little context for
  970. 40:56listeners you can pick a name to put on
  971. 40:58your jersey for the surf yeah it's like
  972. 41:00a women's day of the year or something
  973. 41:03and so they did a Sur Surf Contest where
  974. 41:06all the athletes could put like their
  975. 41:08favorite women on their Jersey and so
  976. 41:11the world surf League uh denied a bunch
  977. 41:14of athletes to put me on their Jersey
  978. 41:16cuz all the athletes were like most of
  979. 41:18them were pretty stoked I think even all
  980. 41:20the guys that was other thing I was like
  981. 41:22kind of bummed none of the guys really
  982. 41:24spoke out either because I think most of
  983. 41:26the guys were not for it um but none of
  984. 41:29them spoke out but I guess their careers
  985. 41:32were on the line but even the former
  986. 41:34Male World Champs like female World
  987. 41:36Champs come on like guys like you know
  988. 41:39that this is not okay and this will not
  989. 41:42end well for the
  990. 41:44females um and so yeah anyway I got
  991. 41:48what's it called cancel cultured yeah I
  992. 41:51got full cancelled by the world surf
  993. 41:53league and they no one names anymore Bey
  994. 41:55Hamilton was not allowed on anyone's
  995. 41:57Jersey wow that's so crazy because
  996. 42:00you're the most inspirational female
  997. 42:03surfer I think surfer in the world and
  998. 42:07you've definitely got to be one of the
  999. 42:08most known names as far as surfing I
1000. 42:10think in surfing for sure yeah yeah so
1001. 42:14it's the natural like kids are going to
1002. 42:16want to be like Bethany Hamilton so to
1003. 42:18be denied that is just insane yeah it's
  1004. 42:21weird I think that you've given people
1005. 42:23strength even if they haven't spoken yet
1006. 42:25I think totally and like I think over
1007. 42:29time things will turn back around but
1008. 42:32like for example recently I just try to
1009. 42:34like post every now and then but there
  1010. 42:36was a women's longboard event and the
1011. 42:38organization tried to say no to the the
1012. 42:41male coming to compete in the female
1013. 42:43division but it was by the state law the
1014. 42:46organization would get shut down if they
1015. 42:48don't abide by the state law so at the
  1016. 42:50end of the day actually like it's a
1017. 42:52bummer but while all the girls could say
1018. 42:55no the state might still
1019. 42:58um overpower them but at the end of the
1020. 43:01day if none of them show up then they
1021. 43:02have no event and so you know maybe if
1022. 43:06it gets to that point like hopefully the
1023. 43:08girls will just say no I think that's so
1024. 43:10great so how what is your what are you
1025. 43:13most excited about now moving forward
1026. 43:15where's your passion lie now moving
1027. 43:18forward oh I mean I'm just so like in
1028. 43:20love with my children and love spending
1029. 43:23life with them and serving them and just
1030. 43:26getting the choke on their faces every
1031. 43:29day um my youngest is almost a year and
1032. 43:33my oldest is almost nine so we just have
1033. 43:36like a really fun household and um
1034. 43:39that's pretty much like what I'm most
1035. 43:41excited about like of course I like
1036. 43:43helping other people and so I have like
  1037. 43:45my different programs I'm working on
1038. 43:47some cool projects um to support
1039. 43:50families to be together more and to like
1040. 43:53just Empower them to live a healthy life
1041. 43:57mentally emotionally spiritually so soon
1042. 44:00I'll be launching the Bethany Hamilton
1043. 44:02Network it'll be kind of like a um just
  1044. 44:05like a A Step Beyond social media but a
1045. 44:09place to empower and encourage our young
1046. 44:11people and families as a whole really NE
1047. 44:13and then the mother daughter program
1048. 44:15hopefully fatherson down the road maybe
1049. 44:17podcasting soon too so but the
1050. 44:21nitty-gritty of every day is for sure
1051. 44:23like motherhood and just trying to find
1052. 44:25time to get in the ocean yeah and yeah
1053. 44:27and be present there too it's so true
1054. 44:29you can't like Boggle your brain down
1055. 44:31with all this nonsense like the outside
  1056. 44:33noise when you're with your children
1057. 44:34because you want to be totally present
1058. 44:37they as you know with a almost
1059. 44:399-year-old like they grow so stinking
1060. 44:41fast yeah and then with your fourth one
1061. 44:44you know how fast it goes so it's like
  1062. 44:46savoring every single moment totally I
1063. 44:49actually am feeling that a lot with LA
1064. 44:51I'm like if she wants me to hold her I'm
1065. 44:53holding her if she wants to nurse she's
1066. 44:55nursing if she wants something I'm like
1067. 44:58quick to kid yes I love that we were
1068. 44:59just talking about that in the car he's
  1069. 45:01like I think you can spoil a baby I'm
1070. 45:02like nope you can't like fer eyes them
  1071. 45:05like I'm totally into that I mean I do
1072. 45:07tell her no like to a certain extent but
1073. 45:10she's definitely like the baby of the
1074. 45:13family and the big boys spoil her too
  1075. 45:17like they're so sweet with her it's like
  1076. 45:19heart melting detective brothers that's
1077. 45:21going to that's so great it teaches them
1078. 45:23to be good Brothers good Fathers good
1079. 45:26men good men yeah I feel like my older
1080. 45:28too definitely have a little bit of that
1081. 45:30like natural paternal Instinct like the
1082. 45:32way they treat her is just so sweet
1083. 45:36that's awesome so sweet yeah oh man I
1084. 45:38miss those days yeah it our baby is the
1085. 45:41age of your oldest and so I still I want
1086. 45:44him to be a baby so bad but he doesn't
1087. 45:46just do that like fall into you anymore
1088. 45:48thing you know and I have to come ask
1089. 45:51him for a hug and my teenage son doesn't
1090. 45:53want to hug me at all and I'm like come
1091. 45:55M come back to me but as babies they
1092. 45:58were just I wore them constantly we
1093. 46:01nursed forever until they felt like
1094. 46:03being done or I was about to pop with
1095. 46:04them then X baby yeah and it it was just
  1096. 46:08such a beautiful time like if I I know
1097. 46:11when I'm old that will be the time I
1098. 46:12want to go back to you yeah like it's
1099. 46:15you're just like you're in the most
1100. 46:16beautiful season in life and you just
1101. 46:18don't even need anything to wreck your
1102. 46:21shine right now no for sure it's so
1103. 46:24great all right well thanks so much Beth
  1104. 46:26again
  1105. 46:27[Music]
1106. 46:29can't wait to hear what this next year
1107. 46:31has in store I keep falling in this
1108. 46:32chair what this next year has in store
1109. 46:34for you that you have been really fun to
1110. 46:37follow on Instagram and I'm so glad
1111. 46:39everybody needs to go follow you because
  1112. 46:41it's so encouraging and like I don't
1113. 46:44know you'll post stuff about snacks and
1114. 46:45I'm like yeah we shouldn't be eating
  1115. 46:47those so it's oop sorry a junk food
  1116. 46:51please it's encouraging like I literally
1117. 46:53put the veggie straws back when I was
  1118. 46:55yes
1119. 46:57someone actually put some in my goodie
1120. 46:59bag as I arrived at the hotel here and I
1121. 47:01was like read the ingredients I'm like
1122. 47:03no please no I was at the grocery store
  1123. 47:06and I grabbed okay let's finish this off
1124. 47:09cuz I always like to encourage people in
1125. 47:10their health and it's hard you got to
1126. 47:14filter through social media but if you
1127. 47:16look up how vegetable oil is made you'll
1128. 47:19know you should not be consuming it so
1129. 47:22go on YouTube and Google search how is
1130. 47:24canola oil made oh no it's strained
1131. 47:27through hexane it goes through all this
  1132. 47:29Machinery it's really like not supposed
1133. 47:32to be e and the history of like some of
1134. 47:35these vegetable oils it used to be an
1135. 47:38ingredient that went in paint and then
1136. 47:40they found a new ingredient that they
1137. 47:42preferred for the paint and then they
1138. 47:44started like but they already had this
1139. 47:46production of all this vegetable oil so
1140. 47:49then they started adding it into the
1141. 47:51food and while sugar has a super bad
1142. 47:54wrap I actually think vegetable oil is
1143. 47:56what's caus causing heart disease and
1144. 47:58Alzheimer's and a lot of these um modern
1145. 48:02day diseases that are way more rampant
1146. 48:04than they used to be and if you look at
1147. 48:06the uh history of Health you can see as
1148. 48:10soon as they started adding vegetable
1149. 48:12oils in those particular disease
1150. 48:14Alzheimer's and heart disease started
1151. 48:17going way crazier and if you start to
1152. 48:20look in all the ingredients of anything
1153. 48:22that's just not natural from the earth
1154. 48:25um it all has vegetable oil like you
1155. 48:28it's hard to escape it and so once you
1156. 48:31become aware and you start looking
1157. 48:33you're like wo this is in everything why
1158. 48:36is it in everything and is this supposed
1159. 48:38to be eaten and so like there used to be
1160. 48:41a campaign too anti butter but people
1161. 48:43have been eating butter from the
1162. 48:44beginning of a time and butter was never
  1163. 48:47really like a big issue and yes there's
  1164. 48:50people lactose intolerant but I think
1165. 48:52it's because our guts are not as healthy
1166. 48:54as they used to be so you want to heal
  1167. 48:56your gut
1168. 48:57say no to the canola and vegetable oils
1169. 49:00and your family will be like that much
1170. 49:02more healthy and so you guys got this I
1171. 49:05just like we didn't talk about health
1172. 49:08that's my thing is like I really want my
1173. 49:11family to be healthy and um myself I
1174. 49:14want to age well so that like when I
1175. 49:16have grandkids I'm like crawling on the
1176. 49:18ground and teaching them how to surf you
1177. 49:20know versus like sitting you know being
1178. 49:22stuck somewhere so what does your diet
1179. 49:24look like for the most part what is it
1180. 49:25you're consuming um I mean we like we
1181. 49:26eat everything but we just eat like real
1182. 49:29food no processed stuff so for example
1183. 49:32like breakfast like my favorite
  1184. 49:34breakfast if I'm in charge I'm making
  1185. 49:36crepes with like um a little a little
1186. 49:40flour a little like cassava or like some
1187. 49:43sort of root like potato sweet potato
1188. 49:46and then a lot of eggs and we'll just
1189. 49:48make little Crepes um and we're not like
1190. 49:51super restrictive on sugar I'm kind of
1191. 49:53into so like they'll still have like
1192. 49:55honey or maple syrup like real stuff not
1193. 49:58like these artificial sweeteners because
1194. 50:01especially young children like you watch
  1195. 50:03them they're moving all day long they're
1196. 50:05burning that so as long as they're
1197. 50:07getting protein to balance out the
  1198. 50:09carbohydrates like they're going to be
1199. 50:11fine and so yeah and even like like my
1200. 50:16children have never been on an
1201. 50:17antibiotic yet because we eat super
  1202. 50:20clean and healthy and so they're a
1203. 50:22little more resilient with their
1204. 50:24sicknesses and like if we had to we
  1205. 50:26would
1206. 50:27because antibiotics has its time and
  1207. 50:29place but I as a child was given a lot
  1208. 50:31of antibiotics under 8 years old so I
1209. 50:34had a lot of gut issues and so trying to
1210. 50:37um I guess like I can only teach so much
1211. 50:40but I would just say you have to
1212. 50:42advocate for yourself or the society
1213. 50:46will put you in your place and so um
1214. 50:51I've just found like cuz I'm you know I
  1215. 50:53come from a professional athlete
  1216. 50:55background so I've been working at
1217. 50:57performing for so many years so I did a
1218. 51:00lot of my own research and I I got
1219. 51:03advice from experts along the way but at
1220. 51:06the end of the day like the biggest
1221. 51:07advocate for myself was me and the
1222. 51:10biggest advocate for my children is me
1223. 51:12absolutely and the biggest advocate for
1224. 51:14my husband is me and
  1225. 51:17so it's cool though cuz my husband's on
1226. 51:20board and he supports that and I can
  1227. 51:23trust that like if I'm not around he's
1228. 51:25cooking up a good meal for the family
1229. 51:28you or if he goes to the grocery store
1230. 51:30he's coming back stuff every now and
1231. 51:33then I'm like hun where you hungry
1232. 51:34shopping today never go hungry um we
1233. 51:37have a lot of like fruit trees and we
1234. 51:41have a lot of food growing on our
1235. 51:42property but we're not gardening at this
1236. 51:45point I think we might at some point in
1237. 51:47our lives we've had Gardens along the
1238. 51:49way but we kind of travel a lot and so
  1239. 51:51it's kind of hard and my brother's a
1240. 51:54farmer so we get like fresh milk from
  1241. 51:56him
1242. 51:57and we get fresh meat from him as well
1243. 51:59so we get like good raw or like good red
1244. 52:02meat like we know our animals so um yeah
1245. 52:06we eat everything but not anything
1246. 52:09artificial or like processed so every
1247. 52:13now and then we might have like a num no
1248. 52:15which has like vegetable oils and I'm
1249. 52:16not like super OCD about it but we try
1250. 52:19to for the most part make that like a
1251. 52:21rare occasion and we bake cookies and we
1252. 52:24like my boy just big muffins that other
  1253. 52:26day now that my 9-year-old's reading
1254. 52:29he's like I'm like if you want to bake
1255. 52:30you can as long as you can read the
1256. 52:32recipe so now he's like starting to bake
  1257. 52:35a f that's always a that's always
  1258. 52:39powdery yeah it's a chaos in the kitchen
1259. 52:42for sure but I'm like you guys got to
1260. 52:43clean it up too yeah it's so fun when
1261. 52:45and they are so proud of themselves when
1262. 52:47they do it they accidentally put too
1263. 52:48much baking soda in the day so that was
1264. 52:51like they were bummed but what was the
1265. 52:53one we had recently was it salt it was
1266. 52:54salt instead of sugar oh
1267. 52:57yeah we still ate it we tried to like
1268. 52:59it's okay K was like how are the cookies
1269. 53:01dad cuz he rapes them whenever she makes
1270. 53:03the cookies and he was
1271. 53:04like they taste like the ocean we fed
1272. 53:07the muffins to our chicken so we have
1273. 53:10chickens so they can eat anything we
1274. 53:12don't eat our chickens got the cookies
  1275. 53:14too we're like they're a little salty
1276. 53:17yeah she put like 3/4 cup of
1277. 53:19salt funny but yeah well we won't keep
1278. 53:22you any longer we appreciate you so much
1279. 53:24thank so much for having me thank you
1280. 53:28all it is living in the new
  1281. 53:33world
  1282. 53:35[Music]
