3. 0:43hey what's up I'm Bethany Hamilton I'm a
4. 0:45pro surfer and this is my story

6. 1:02was born and raised in Hawaii and my
7. 1:07family all surf and so right when I was
8. 1:11young like three four years old I
9. 1:12started taking and just fell in love
10. 1:14with it and I just remember when I was
11. 1:17about seven or eight is when I really
12. 1:20started getting into surfing because
13. 1:22some of my best friends sir and we just
14. 1:25like going to be to seeing in the ocean
15. 1:27I
16. 1:31started competing when basically when my
17. 1:34parents could push me into wave and then
18. 1:36push me back out and that was probably
19. 1:39when I was like four or five and then I
20. 1:41just continue competing and was pretty
21. 1:44hooked just on surfing just obsessed
22. 1:47with you know the lifestyle I guess and
23. 1:51when I realized I wanted to be a pro
24. 1:53surfer I guess I was probably around
25. 1:55eight or nine and I just started
26. 1:58competing and doing pretty good and just
27. 2:00like the little amateur contests around
28. 2:03around Kauai and one of my first major
29. 2:07events was the Ralston Menehune contest
30. 2:10and that's on Oahu and I did good at
31. 2:13night
32. 2:15yes even though I was really young like
33. 2:18you can kind of see like which way my
34. 2:21career is heading and doing it and I was
35. 2:26looking pretty promising
36. 2:30when I was about five years old I gave
37. 2:33my heart to do this case and surfing and
38. 2:36Jesus and my family in just my lifestyle
39. 2:39and I'll just started
40. 2:42skyrocketing towards professional
41. 2:44surfing and as I grew older and my faith
42. 2:47in Christ definitely go to and same with
43. 2:50my ability to surf I started getting
44. 2:52better I
45. 2:54guess just
46. 2:55going to a lot of like the young Bible
47. 2:59studies for like younger kids and I just
48. 3:03knew that I wanted to serve God with my
49. 3:05whole life and
50. 3:07give everything I do to him

54. 3:28the month before the attack happened me
55. 3:32and my mom had just been praying a lot
56. 3:33about like what's God's will for my life
57. 3:36was and what he wanted me to do I just
58. 3:38really wanted to glorify God through my
59. 3:41surfing and I just didn't know exactly
60. 3:44how or just what to do so just really
61. 3:48focusing on that and then the attack
62. 3:49happened and then it was just like life
63. 3:52came to a halt

65. 3:59on Halloween of 2003 I was surfing with
66. 4:03my friend and her brother and dad and
67. 4:06then I lost my arm to a shark a shark
68. 4:09just came and bit it off and I don't
69. 4:12know I lost about 60% of my blood and
70. 4:15it's just a miracle that I survived and
71. 4:18made it to the hospital and I'm still
72. 4:21here today and just stoked to be alive
73. 4:24and doing what I'm doing
74. 4:28my plan my personal like plan was just
75. 4:31to become a pro surfer and just blow up
76. 4:34in the surfing world and then I lost my
77. 4:37arm and it came to the point where am I
78. 4:39even gonna be able to surf anymore like
79. 4:41what am I gonna do am I gonna have to
80. 4:43like move to the mountains is snowboard
81. 4:46or become a photographer and um just all
82. 4:50these ideas were popping up and but
83. 4:53inside I knew I wanted to at least just
84. 4:55try surfing again and give it a go um
85. 4:59I didn't know what God wanted had a plan
86. 5:02for me but I knew I just wanted to still
87. 5:04be a light for him and he just I think
88. 5:07he he gave me a piece um through every
89. 5:10little situation and he gave me the
90. 5:13strength to just move on and I started
91. 5:16surfing about three weeks after and
92. 5:19I got up on my third wave and um pretty
93. 5:24much right that I knew I'd be surfing
94. 5:26and being in the ocean for as long as I
95. 5:29could live or have the ability to do it
96. 5:33and now I'm 19 years old and I'm up
97. 5:37about on my third year of competing as a
98. 5:39pro surfer on the wqs and it's really
99. 5:42exciting because a lot of people
100. 5:44probably doubted me I've been probably
101. 5:46doubted myself and I just know that
102. 5:49God's given me this amazing ability and
103. 5:51opportunity to
104. 5:53compete and surf and just be a light to
105. 5:57that world and
106. 5:58just the whole world

110. 6:08when the attack happened I guess I just
111. 6:11instantly became famous and that wasn't
112. 6:13really something that I desired and I
113. 6:16didn't really have a strong start and
114. 6:18just be famous and like you know
115. 6:20embeddable world and that's kind of what
116. 6:23happened so I
117. 6:25realized that that was my opportunity to
118. 6:27to just share God's love and to this day
119. 6:30I guess it just continues on in
120. 6:33different ways I'm just through my
121. 6:35safety or
122. 6:36opportunities just to do
123. 6:39different TV shows or I think we need to
124. 6:43just really be aware of when our
125. 6:45opportunities are out there and just to
126. 6:48share God's love and
127. 6:50feel like for him
