- 0:03Hello, I am Dr. Bhavna Mangla, a
- 0:05dermatologist from Skin Mantra. Today,
- 0:08I will tell you about corns—what they
- 0:10are. Why they happen. How you can
- 0:12prevent them, and what their best
- 0:14treatment is. So, these corns are
- 0:18nothing but...A protective mechanism of
- 0:21our own body. Meaning, whenever there
- 0:23is repeated friction or constant
- 0:24pressure on our skin, the skin there
- 0:26starts to thicken so that it doesn't
- 0:28get damaged. Now, these corns can occur
- 0:31on the bottom of your feet, on the
- 0:33sides of your toes, or even between
- 0:35your toes. But they bother you when
- 0:38they become very painful. So, I told
- 0:42you that these corns develop whenever
- 0:44there is repeated friction or pressure.
- 0:47So, when can they occur? If you wear
- 0:49ill-fitting shoes, meaning the size is
- 0:51either a bit too large or too small, or
- 0:54if you have a habit of walking barefoot
- 0:56or wearing high heels. If you don't
- 0:58wear socks with your shoes. Some people
- 1:01have job profiles where they have to
- 1:04stand for hours or walk for a long time
- 1:06. So, in such people, due to body
- 1:09weight and constant pressure, corns
- 1:11develop on the bottom of their feet. So
- 1:16, without wasting time, let's talk
- 1:18about the treatment. For this, first of
- 1:20all, you must see your dermatologist
- 1:22because the diagnosis is very important
- 1:24: is it a corn, a callus, or a wart? To
- 1:26the naked eye, all three conditions
- 1:28look exactly the same. But their
- 1:29treatments are completely different.
- 1:31Now, if it is a corn and it has just
- 1:33started, you can correct it to some
- 1:35extent at home. For that, you need to
- 1:39put some warm water in a bowl or a tub
- 1:41and soak your feet. After that, clean
- 1:44the area with a towel and gently rub
- 1:47that portion with a pumice stone. Then,
- 1:49apply a moisturizer or any cream
- 1:51containing urea and lactic acid, and
- 1:54you can leave it on. By repeating this,
- 1:57soft corns or very superficial corns
- 1:59come out. Some people also use corn
- 2:02tapes, but you have to be very careful
- 2:04applying them because if you keep them
- 2:06on for a long time, the surrounding
- 2:08skin can get macerated, which can also
- 2:10lead to infection. But if your corn is
- 2:13painful or large, you should absolutely
- 2:16not do any of these things, and instead
- 2:18, you should go to your healthcare
- 2:19expert to have it removed directly. The
- 2:28best way to remove it is through CO2
- 2:30laser ablation. In this, the base of
- 2:32the corn is numbed by administering a
- 2:34local anesthetic, and then it is
- 2:35removed using a CO2 laser. It has a
- 2:37central core that must be completely
- 2:40removed, otherwise, it can return. Some
- 2:42people also remove it through surgery.
- 2:44The purpose of both is the same, but in
- 2:46my opinion, since surgery involves
- 2:48cutting, there is more bleeding and it
- 2:50also takes time to heal. With the laser
- 2:52, there is absolutely no blood. You
- 2:53don't need any dressing, no stitches
- 2:55are required, and the healing is also
- 2:58faster. After this, you should not put
- 3:00too much weight on that area for 7 to
- 3:0210 days. You need to apply prophylactic
- 3:04antibiotics and antibacterial ointment
- 3:07for a few days, and you can even get it
- 3:09wet with water starting the very next
- 3:11day. So, if your corns are painful, you
- 3:22can get them removed very safely in a
- 3:24single session using a CO2 laser. If
- 3:27you follow these precautions after
- 3:29removal, such as wearing properly
- 3:31fitted shoes, not walking barefoot, and
- 3:33wearing padded footwear, then these
- 3:35corns will not return. I hope this
- 3:37video has been informative for you.
- 3:39Thank you very much for watching this
- 3:40video. Thank you so much.
