Best Scalping Indicator on TradingView? I Tested It 5,000 Times (FREE) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00This free indicator is called range
- 0:02filter. It was made for scalping. It's
- 0:04free on TradingView, and it's one of the
- 0:06most popular scalping scripts there.
- 0:08[music] The title says I tested it 5,000
- 0:11times. That's not true. I tested it more
- 0:13than 30,000 times on real Bitcoin,
- 0:16Ethereum, and Solana charts. [music] And
- 0:18I put it up against three other popular
- 0:20free scalping indicators. One of them
- 0:23fakes you out on almost every second
- 0:25signal. Range filter, fewer than one in
- 0:2810. But here's what surprised me. Taking
- 0:30every signal isn't where the money is.
- 0:33The edge came from three simple filters
- 0:35that throw away most of the signals, up
- 0:37to nine out of 10. By the end of this
- 0:39video, you'll have three complete
- 0:41strategies with the exact settings and
- 0:43the one mistake that quietly kills most
- 0:46scalpers.
- 0:48Quick note before we start. I back
- 0:50tested all three strategies from this
- 0:52video, trade by trade. They're in the
- 0:55TradeIQ backtest sheet together with
- 0:57every strategy from this channel tested
- 0:59on years of real data. Click a strategy
- 1:02and you see every single trade and how
- 1:04the account would have grown. Put in
- 1:06your own account size and risk and every
- 1:08number recalculates. The sheet comes
- 1:10with the channel membership for $7.99 a
- 1:12month together with the members-only
- 1:14backtest videos. Just tap the join
- 1:16button under this video. Now, the test.
- 1:21Here are the four indicators: Range
- 1:23Filter, Hull Suite, SSL Channel, and UT
- 1:27Bot Alerts. All four are free and open
- 1:29source, so I rebuilt each one from its
- 1:32code with its default settings. Then, I
- 1:34ran them on the 5-minute and the
- 1:3615-minute chart of Bitcoin, Ethereum,
- 1:38and Solana from January 2021 to October
- 1:422026. That's more than 700,000 signals.
- 1:46For every signal, I measured three
- 1:48things: how many signals each indicator
- 1:50gives, how often a signal flips back the
- 1:53other way within five candles. That's a
- 1:55fake out. You buy and a few candles
- 1:58later the same indicator tells you to
- 1:59sell. And how late the signal comes,
- 2:02measured from the swing it should have
- 2:04caught. That's the proof, not one
- 2:06cherry-picked screenshot. Every signal
- 2:09on every coin for almost 6 years. Let's
- 2:12go from worst to best.
- 2:18Number four is UT Bot Alerts. On the
- 2:205-minute chart, it gave about 1,200
- 2:23signals a month on each coin. That's
- 2:26around 40 a day. And almost half of them
- 2:28flipped back within five candles. Buy,
- 2:31sell. Buy, sell. If you follow everyone,
- 2:34you're not trading. You're paying fees.
- 2:37Here's a real 5-minute chart. Price is
- 2:39drifting sideways. Buy, sell. Buy, sell.
- 2:44Four signals in under 2 hours, and price
- 2:46ended up right where it started. UT Bot
- 2:49is the fastest of the four, but on its
- 2:51default settings, it's far too sensitive
- 2:53for a scalping chart.
- 2:58Number three is SSL Channel. It draws
- 3:02two moving averages, one of the highs
- 3:04and one of the lows, and flips when
- 3:06price closes outside them. It's calmer
- 3:09than UT Bot, but it still gave almost
- 3:11800 signals a month on the 5-minute
- 3:13chart. And about one in four flipped
- 3:15straight back. The problem is the
- 3:18length. 10 candles is very short. So, in
- 3:21a range, price keeps closing just above
- 3:23the average high, then just below the
- 3:25average low, and the channel flips every
- 3:28time.
- 3:33Number two is Hull Suite. It's a fast,
- 3:36smooth moving average that turns green
- 3:38when it rises and red when it falls.
- 3:40Each color change is a signal. That
- 3:42smoothing helps. [music] About one in
- 3:45six signals faked out, which is a big
- 3:47step up from SSL Channel and UT Bot. But
- 3:50it still turns color more than 400 times
- 3:52a month on the 5-minute chart. And it
- 3:55can still flip on a small pullback. You
- 3:57can see it here. The color turns red
- 3:59right in the middle of a move that keeps
- 4:01going up.
- 4:06And number one is range filter.
- 4:08Range filter draws one line that follows
- 4:10price, but only moves when price travels
- 4:13further than a normal range. It measures
- 4:16how far price usually moves per candle,
- 4:18smooths it over 100 candles, and
- 4:20multiplies it by three. Small wiggles
- 4:23inside that range are ignored. [music]
- 4:25The line stays flat and you get no
- 4:27signal. When price breaks out of the
- 4:29range and the line turns, you get a buy
- 4:31or a sell. [music] The result? Fewer
- 4:33than one in 10 signals faked out on both
- 4:36time frames. [music] About five times
- 4:38cleaner than UTBot.
- 4:42But there are two catches. [music]
- 4:43First, range filter is late. It waits
- 4:46for price to prove itself, so its signal
- 4:49comes about four ATR after the swing.
- 4:52ATR is the size of a normal candle.
- 4:54UTBot is about twice as fast [music].
- 4:57Second, and this is the one that
- 4:59surprised me. A clean signal is still
- 5:01not an edge. After a signal from any of
- 5:04the four indicators, price moved two ATR
- 5:06in the signal's direction before one ATR
- 5:09against it only about one time in three.
- 5:12That's exactly what you'd get by
- 5:13flipping a coin.
- 5:15Think about what that means. If you buy
- 5:17every signal with a target twice the
- 5:19size of your stop, you win about one in
- 5:21three. [music] That's break even before
- 5:23fees and a loss after them. The
- 5:25indicator didn't add anything. So, the
- 5:28signal tells you that something is
- 5:30starting. It doesn't tell you if it's
- 5:32worth trading. That's the job of the
- 5:34filters.
- 5:35[music]
- 5:36And here's the mistake that kills most
- 5:38scalpers.
- 5:39Fees.
- 5:40On the 5-minute chart, the stop is
- 5:42small. A typical stop was less than 1%
- 5:45away. So, the fee you pay to get in and
- 5:47out costs about 14%of what you risk on
- 5:51every single trade. On the 1-hour chart,
- 5:54it's about 3%. That's why I stopped
- 5:56trading every signal on the 5-minute
- 5:58chart. [music] I moved up to 15 minutes,
- 6:0030 minutes, and 1 hour, and I started
- 6:03filtering.
- 6:07[music] I tested about 115,000
- 6:10combinations of filters and exits,
- 6:12trend, volume, volatility, momentum,
- 6:15trading sessions.
- 6:17Most of them only looked good on the
- 6:19years they were tuned on. [music] Three
- 6:21filters held up when I checked them on
- 6:22later years.
- 6:23Filter one, the trend. Only take a buy
- 6:26when price is above the 200 EMA and only
- 6:29a sell when it's below.
- 6:31Filter two, volume. The signal candle
- 6:34should trade more volume than its last
- 6:3620 candles on average. A breakout on low
- 6:39volume usually goes nowhere.
- 6:41Filter three, volatility.
- 6:44The 14 candle ATR should be above the
- 6:46100 candle ATR. In plain words, candles
- 6:49are getting bigger than usual. The
- 6:51market is waking up, not falling asleep.
- 6:54Each filter answers a different
- 6:55question. The trend asks, is this signal
- 6:58going with the bigger move or against
- 7:00it? Volume asks, is anyone actually
- 7:03behind this breakout? And volatility
- 7:05asks, is the market moving enough right
- 7:08now to reach a target? Together, these
- 7:10filters throw away most of the signals,
- 7:13up to nine out of 10. And that's the
- 7:15point. [music]
- 7:17Here's how to set this up on TradingView
- 7:19in under a minute. Open the indicators
- 7:21menu and search for range filter buy and
- 7:24sell 5 minutes. [music] Add it and leave
- 7:27the settings on default. Sampling period
- 7:29100, multiplier three. Then add a moving
- 7:32average. Set it to exponential, length
- 7:35200. For the volume filter, open the
- 7:38volume indicator settings and turn on
- 7:40its moving average, length 20. Now you
- 7:42can see at a glance if the signal candle
- 7:45is above that line. [music] For
- 7:46volatility, add the average true range
- 7:49twice. One with length 14, one with
- 7:52length 100 in the same [music] pane.
- 7:54When the fast line is above the slow
- 7:56one, ATR is expanding. And for strategy
- 7:59three, add the ADX with its default
- 8:01length of 14 and draw a line at 20.
- 8:08Strategy one is on the one-hour chart
- 8:10and it's the cleanest of the three.
- 8:13Take a range filter signal only when
- 8:15price is on the right side of the 200
- 8:17EMA, volume is at least twice its 20
- 8:19candle average, and ATR is expanding.
- 8:23Put the stop just past the swing, the
- 8:25lowest low of the last 10 candles for a
- 8:27buy.
- 8:28The target is two times your risk. And
- 8:30once price reaches one times your risk,
- 8:33move the stop to your entry. [music]
- 8:35Here's a real trade. Solana, one-hour
- 8:37chart, September 2026.
- 8:40Range filter flips to a buy. Price is
- 8:42above the 200 EMA. Volume is almost
- 8:45three times normal. ATR is rising. All
- 8:49three filters agree.
- 8:5016 candles later, the target is hit.
- 8:57Strategy two is on the 30-minute chart.
- 9:00Here, the trend filter comes from the
- 9:02four-hour chart. Only buy when the last
- 9:04four-hour candle closed above its 200
- 9:07EMA and only sell below it. [music]
- 9:09Volume just has to be above average and
- 9:12ATR must be expanding. Same swing stop.
- 9:15Move the stop to entry at one times your
- 9:17risk, but let the target run to three
- 9:19times [music] your risk. Why the
- 9:21four-hour trend here? On the 30-minute
- 9:23chart, price crosses its 200 EMA about
- 9:2650 times a month. On the four-hour
- 9:28chart, about five. So, the four-hour
- 9:31trend keeps you on the side of the
- 9:32bigger move for days, not hours. [music]
- 9:35Solana again, 30-minute chart, August
- 9:382026. The four-hour trend is up. Volume
- 9:41is above average, ATR is expanding, and
- 9:44range filter fires a buy. Price runs on
- 9:47to three times the risk. [music]
- 9:53Strategy three is the fastest one, on
- 9:55the 15-minute chart. Use the 200 EMA on
- 9:58the same chart, an expanding ATR, and
- 10:01add the ADX.
- 10:03ADX measures how strong the trend is.
- 10:06Only trade when it's above 20. Swing
- 10:08stop, target three times your risk, and
- 10:11no break even.
- 10:12Ethereum, 15-minute chart, October 2026.
- 10:16Price is below the 200 EMA, ADX is above
- 10:1920, ATR is expanding. [music] Range
- 10:22filter flips to a sell, and 10 candles
- 10:25later, the target is hit.
- 10:27But, I'll be honest, this is the most
- 10:29fragile of the three.
- 10:31In the latest year, the one it had never
- 10:33seen, it only broke even.
- 10:35If you trade the 15-minute chart, use
- 10:37smaller size.
- 10:43The filters decide which trades you
- 10:44take. Money management decides if you
- 10:47survive the losing streaks. And there
- 10:49will be losing streaks, because most
- 10:51trades in these strategies don't reach
- 10:53the target. Rule one, risk 1%of your
- 10:56account per trade, not more [music].
- 10:59With a $1,000 account, that's $10. If
- 11:02your stop is 2%away from your entry,
- 11:05your position is $500. If the stop is 5%
- 11:08away, the position is 200. The stop
- 11:11decides the size, not the other way
- 11:13around.
- 11:14When I doubled the risk to 2%, strategy
- 11:17one's worst drawdown doubled, too, from
- 11:19about 11%to about 21.
- 11:22On the 15-minute strategy, it went from
- 11:2441%to 71. Rule two, when your account is
- 11:2810%below its high, cut your risk in
- 11:31half. At 20%below, cut it to a quarter.
- 11:35That simple rule made the worst
- 11:36drawdowns much smaller. It cost some
- 11:39profit in the good stretches, but it
- 11:41stops one bad stretch from wiping you
- 11:43out. Rule three, use the break even
- 11:46stop. On strategies one and two, a trade
- 11:49that reaches one times your risk can no
- 11:51longer turn into a full loss. Here's
- 11:53what that looks like. Ethereum, one-hour
- 11:55chart, May 2026. Strategy one sells.
- 12:00Price drops to one times the risk, so
- 12:02the stop moves to the entry. Then, price
- 12:04turns and comes all the way back.
- 12:07Without the break even stop, that's a
- 12:08full loss. With it, you pay the fees and
- 12:11move on. Rule four, if you run more than
- 12:14one strategy, split your risk. All three
- 12:17strategies at 1%each on three coins can
- 12:20mean nine trades open at once. In the
- 12:23backtest [music], running all three at
- 12:241%each pushed the worst drawdown to
- 12:27about 52%. At half a percent each, it
- 12:30was about 29.
- 12:33And here's one that failed, so you know
- 12:35what that looks like. Bitcoin, 1-hour
- 12:38chart, October 2026. Buy signal. Above
- 12:41the 200 EMA, volume twice the average,
- 12:44ATR expanding. Every filter says yes,
- 12:48and price turns around and hits the stop
- 12:5011 candles later. Look at what happened.
- 12:53The breakout candle was real, and so was
- 12:55the volume. But right after the entry,
- 12:57price fell back into the range, drifted
- 12:59for a few hours, and then broke down. No
- 13:02filter can see that in advance. That's a
- 13:04normal loss. [music] The filters don't
- 13:06make losing trades disappear. They make
- 13:09sure that over hundreds of trades, the
- 13:11winners can pay for them.
- 13:13So, which one fits you? It mostly comes
- 13:16down to how often you want to trade.
- 13:19Across Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana,
- 13:21strategy one gave about six trades a
- 13:23month. Strategy two, about 19. And
- 13:27strategy three, about 34.
- 13:29Strategy one is the slowest, but it's
- 13:32the cleanest, and it still held up on
- 13:34the newest data. Strategy two trades
- 13:36three times as often with a bigger
- 13:38target. And strategy three is the
- 13:40busiest, but also the most fragile. If
- 13:43you're new to this, start with strategy
- 13:45one on a demo account. Get used to
- 13:47waiting for all three filters, and to
- 13:50taking the losses without changing the
- 13:51rules. Then, add the faster ones if you
- 13:54want more trades.
- 13:56Before the cheat sheet, here are five
- 13:59mistakes to avoid. Mistake one, taking
- 14:02every signal. Even the cleanest
- 14:04indicator in this test is a coin flip on
- 14:06its own. Mistake two, scalping the
- 14:095-minute chart with market orders. The
- 14:12fees eat a big piece of every trade
- 14:14before it even starts. Mistake three,
- 14:17moving the stop to break even too early.
- 14:19In strategies one and two, the stop
- 14:22moves only after price reaches one times
- 14:24your risk. Move it sooner and normal
- 14:26noise can knock you out of trades that
- 14:28would have worked. Mistake four,
- 14:30ignoring volume. A breakout that nobody
- 14:33trades is usually a trap. And mistake
- 14:36five, raising your risk after a few
- 14:38wins. A losing streak always comes and
- 14:41it hits hardest right after you've
- 14:43increased your size [music].
- 14:48Here's everything on one screen. Range
- 14:51filter, default settings, sampling
- 14:53period 100, range multiplier three.
- 14:57Strategy one: one hour chart, 200 EMA,
- 15:00volume at least twice average, ATR 14
- 15:03above ATR 100, target two R, break even
- 15:07at one R. Strategy two: 30-minute chart,
- 15:10four hour 200 EMA, volume above average,
- 15:14ATR expanding, target three R, break
- 15:17even at one R. Strategy three: 15-minute
- 15:20chart, 200 EMA, ATR expanding, ADX above
- 15:2520, target three R. Stop on all three:
- 15:29just past the lowest low or highest high
- 15:31of the last 10 candles [music] and risk
- 15:331%.
- 15:36Before you trade any of this, test it on
- 15:39a demo account first. These are results
- 15:41on past data and nothing here is
- 15:43financial advice. If you want to see
- 15:45every trade behind these three
- 15:47strategies with your own account size
