  1. 0:00well it's been two weeks since riers at
  2. 0:02UC Berkeley used violence to force the
  3. 0:04cancellation of a speech by Milo
  4. 0:06ganopoulos most people were appalled by
  5. 0:07what happened but Yeet farara is not
  6. 0:10among those people besides working as a
  7. 0:12public school teacher in California she
  8. 0:13is the national organizer for the
  9. 0:15coalition to defend affirmative action
  10. 0:16integration and immigrant rights and
  11. 0:18fight for equality by any means
  12. 0:21necessary bam is the acronym flara is
  13. 0:24willing to integrate violence into her
  14. 0:25political agenda as you can see from
  15. 0:26this clip of her disrupting a rally last
  16. 0:28summer in Sacramento the police off
  17. 0:36our go
  18. 0:43boet our
  19. 0:46street please
  20. 0:50prot
  21. 0:51[Applause]
  22. 0:53please stand down get out get
  23. 0:57back fla helped organize the bir protest
  24. 1:00and she says activists ought to copy his
  25. 1:02tactics for other speakers and events
  26. 1:04around the country juet Clara is with us
  27. 1:06now you bet thanks all for joining us so
  28. 1:09uh you did a bunch of interviews after
  29. 1:11and you were asked about this and you
  30. 1:12were to your credit I think very
  31. 1:13straightforward about it and
  32. 1:14Unapologetic and you said yet this guy
  33. 1:16was a fascist Milo's a fascist and we
  34. 1:19shut him down you didn't pretend
  35. 1:20otherwise we shut him down and that's
  36. 1:22what you do with fascists I think I'm
  37. 1:23characterizing what you said correctly
  38. 1:25just so we can understand the standard
  39. 1:27here what is a
  40. 1:28fascist so a fascist is someone who's
  41. 1:31organizing a mass movement that's
  42. 1:33attacking women immigrants black people
  43. 1:36other minority groups in a movement of
  44. 1:38genocide that's what a fascist is okay
  45. 1:41so it's someone who's committing
  46. 1:43violence and it's someone who's
  47. 1:45committing violence and he's trying to
  48. 1:46organize other people to commit violence
  49. 1:49okay and milonopoulos is a fascist okay
  50. 1:52so he's committed acts of violence
  51. 1:53against the protected groups you
  52. 1:55mentioned well what he's doing is he's
  53. 1:57trying to be the youth face and the
  54. 1:59token
  55. 2:00that other people who are organizing
  56. 2:02violence try to hide behind and so in
  57. 2:04all of his talks all over the country
  58. 2:06what yannopoulos has done is whip up a
  59. 2:08whole Lynch Mob mentality where people
  60. 2:10who come to see him or his supporters
  61. 2:13not only agree with his views but also
  62. 2:15attack other people and that was
  63. 2:16certainly true in Washington state when
  64. 2:19he one of his supporters came and
  65. 2:21actually shot an anti-fascist protester
  66. 2:24but in Berkeley we made sure that didn't
  67. 2:26happen because we were able to shut him
  68. 2:27down so um my but you're conceding that
  69. 2:30Milo himself has not committed acts of
  70. 2:32violence and nor has he incited Violence
  71. 2:34by the legal definition he'd be in jail
  72. 2:36if he did but you're saying that because
  73. 2:37people who agree with him have committed
  74. 2:38violence he should not be allowed to
  75. 2:40speak you know a fascist movement takes
  76. 2:43many forms and it always tries to have
  77. 2:45one form that looks respectable and a
  78. 2:47little bit milder but yannopoulos isn't
  79. 2:49just a standup comedian and he isn't
  80. 2:51someone who just has ideas and posts
  81. 2:53them up on YouTube he's someone who was
  82. 2:55funded by Breitbart and Steve Bannon to
  83. 2:58go around to college campuses to try try
  84. 2:59to recruit other young people to then
  85. 3:01conduct those attacks on his behalf and
  86. 3:04on Trump's behalf but I'm really really
  87. 3:06glad to say that thousands of us were
  88. 3:08out there last week or February 1st and
  89. 3:11made sure that there were thousands of
  90. 3:12us to make sure that we defended our
  91. 3:15campus this community and especially the
  92. 3:17Immigrant and Muslim Students who were
  93. 3:19under attack and have been under
  94. 3:20attacked by him and other fascists right
  95. 3:22and by using violence I mean you don't
  96. 3:23you don't shy away from that by any
  97. 3:25means necessary is the name of your
  98. 3:26group and so it implies violence so what
  99. 3:28should we do with f I mean if you think
  100. 3:30that someone is espousing
  101. 3:32genocide what should we do with them I
  102. 3:35mean should that person be allowed to
  103. 3:37walk free should we put him in jail
  104. 3:39should we kill him should we Exile him I
  105. 3:40mean what it's a sincere question if
  106. 3:42you're willing to use violence because
  107. 3:43you think someone is espousing genocide
  108. 3:45what's the penalty for that well first
  109. 3:47we've got to make sure we nip it in the
  110. 3:48bud and we make sure that they're not
  111. 3:50allowed to recruit and act as if it's
  112. 3:52respectable to call for the mass murder
  113. 3:54of millions of people in fact Millions
  114. 3:56who make up the majority of people in
  115. 3:58this nation at this point okay so just
  116. 4:00to be clear there's no Milo Milo
  117. 4:02yannopoulos this is not a defense of him
  118. 4:03just a factual Point has not ever said
  119. 4:05that in public anyway not that we have a
  120. 4:07record of there's no evidence that he
  121. 4:09has called for the genocide of anybody
  122. 4:11as you know but you're saying by
  123. 4:12transference in some way he inspires
  124. 4:15people who believe that I guess but but
  125. 4:16you're not getting you're not getting my
  126. 4:17question like what when you say nip in
  127. 4:19the bud should he be allowed to go on
  128. 4:21the subway and talk to the guy next to
  129. 4:23him about perhaps joining his movement
  130. 4:25or should he be allowed to talk to
  131. 4:26people in restaurants or what should we
  132. 4:28do with the fascist who you believe
  133. 4:29inspiring genocide so first of all the
  134. 4:32alt-right is a Neo fascist movement and
  135. 4:35they're trying to hide behind some
  136. 4:36softer versions of their more open
  137. 4:39counterparts who identify themselves as
  138. 4:41Nazis but they're still part of the same
  139. 4:43movement first of all second of all when
  140. 4:45someone is trying to speak at a campus
  141. 4:47or at a rally they're doing it not just
  142. 4:49because they have an opinion but someone
  143. 4:51like yannopoulos or any other alt writer
  144. 4:52or fascist or Neo fascist is doing it to
  145. 4:55recruit other people no we don't let
  146. 4:57them recruit and in fact when you look
  147. 4:59back at Holocaust and the lessons that
  148. 5:01we draw from that we don't say oh well
  149. 5:03at least we let them voice their opinion
  150. 5:05we say never again well when we say that
  151. 5:09we Elevate people like Dietrich bonhof
  152. 5:11or members of the plot against the
  153. 5:13leader of Nazi Germany to kill him so I
  154. 5:16mean that was the response of course to
  155. 5:18the leader of that fascist movement most
  156. 5:19people think it was legitimate do you
  157. 5:20think you're not answering my question
  158. 5:22that people like Milo who you've decided
  159. 5:24are fascists should be allowed to speak
  160. 5:26in public you said they weren't allowed
  161. 5:28to speak at Berkeley he should
  162. 5:30speak in public to spread his racist and
  163. 5:34misogynistic and homophobic lies no he
  164. 5:37does not have the right to do that when
  165. 5:39he's trying to when he's using his
  166. 5:41speech to whip up attacks on people no
  167. 5:44he doesn't have the right to do that
  168. 5:46spread lies about our Humanity no he
  169. 5:49doesn't okay so you're we have right to
  170. 5:51defend ourselves untr well I mean of
  171. 5:53course in the case of Berkeley that's
  172. 5:55not what I said I didn't say you're not
  173. 5:57allowed to say things that are true
  174. 5:59you're tring to spread racism and
  175. 6:01hostility misogyny rape whip up people
  176. 6:04to Lynch people or to certainly have
  177. 6:06that mentality to rape people or to
  178. 6:09Lynch them absolutely not and any decent
  179. 6:11human being whether it was in a
  180. 6:13classroom or at a restaurant if they
  181. 6:15heard someone doing that would turn
  182. 6:16around and tell them you need to stop
  183. 6:18talking you are not welcome here this is
  184. 6:19not a safe environment you need to go
  185. 6:22well that's what we did hit them or set
  186. 6:25fir so you're a middle school teacher
  187. 6:26which may surprise some of our students
  188. 6:28rather some of our viewers that you have
  189. 6:30students there the first amendment was
  190. 6:32always kind of the Cornerstone of
  191. 6:34American Civic life the idea that you
  192. 6:35have the right to say something that
  193. 6:37other people may vehemently disagree
  194. 6:38with but you have that right it's
  195. 6:40enshrined in the Bill of Rights do you
  196. 6:41teach that to your
  197. 6:43students the first amendment is about
  198. 6:45Free Speech but that's not an
  199. 6:47abstraction and if there was someone in
  200. 6:49my classroom who was espousing rape or
  201. 6:52genocide or attacks on Muslims I would
  202. 6:55certainly make sure that I stood up for
  203. 6:57my the rest of my students and told them
  204. 6:59they need to stop and if they refuseed
  205. 7:00to they would need to leave would in
  206. 7:03fact in fact
  207. 7:06fascism I'm not finished though yet and
  208. 7:09I'm not finished yet if there was a
  209. 7:11fascist in any situation that I was in I
  210. 7:14would call for other people to take
  211. 7:16action too but it's not just about the
  212. 7:18immediate moment it's also within the
  213. 7:20context of building a movement but I
  214. 7:23wantd you're getting at you're I want to
  215. 7:26bring this back to the concrete as as
  216. 7:27you said it and rightly so so if there
  217. 7:29was a student in your class who started
  218. 7:31espousing what you believe is fascism
  219. 7:33and you said you need to leave you need
  220. 7:35to be quiet you need to leave and he
  221. 7:37didn't leave would you hit him as you
  222. 7:39hit that protest would you beat him up
  223. 7:42no of course not but that's not
  224. 7:44what talking about people who you know
  225. 7:47what in Sacramento there were fascists
  226. 7:49who had knives tied at the ends of
  227. 7:51sticks and they stabbed people in not
  228. 7:54the man that you hit he was kind of
  229. 7:55unarmed to me Yes actually they did so
  230. 8:00and no and it's funny to you but it's
  231. 8:01actually not funny to the rest of us and
  232. 8:03that's why we take this really seriously
  233. 8:05I I know that you take it seriously and
  234. 8:06that's why I'm asking you a really
  235. 8:07simple question what Ser as a I am
  236. 8:11serious as a heart I believe you oh I
  237. 8:13believe that you're serious no class we
  238. 8:15are talking about people who are trying
  239. 8:18to kill and murder people and who've
  240. 8:21already done it and who're trying to
  241. 8:22create a hostile environment on these
  242. 8:24campuses in order to do that no that's
  243. 8:27not a safe environment for immigrant
  244. 8:29students
  245. 8:30that's not a safe environment for women
  246. 8:31or Muslim Students or TR students and so
  247. 8:34yeah we have a right to a viation of my
  248. 8:38ask you one last question you if if I
  249. 8:40may so if you're standing I just want to
  250. 8:41know like the protocol for anti-fascist
  251. 8:43activist like yourself you're standing
  252. 8:44on a street corner someone starts saying
  253. 8:46something you don't like and you think
  254. 8:47boy that's an act of hostility that
  255. 8:49person's a fascist be quiet you are
  256. 8:51misrepresenting the words that I've been
  257. 8:53saying this isn't about not liking
  258. 8:55something this isn't about Ben and
  259. 8:56Jerry's versus Stone Cold pizza or
  260. 9:00something this is about the lives of
  261. 9:03real people immigrants who are under
  262. 9:05attack now Muslims who are being
  263. 9:08Massac rap how deep is your you're the
  264. 9:10one trivializing this not me I'm not in
  265. 9:13any way trivializing I ask you a sincere
  266. 9:14question to what extent would you go to
  267. 9:17stop that person from spreading
  268. 9:19genocidal propaganda would I would call
  269. 9:22for people to counter protest to stand
  270. 9:25up and to shut down any what do you mean
  271. 9:28by shut down
  272. 9:29like what if what if I want to keep
  273. 9:31talking I'm saying something that you
  274. 9:32find appalling but you know what this
  275. 9:33I've got a First Amendment right I'm an
  276. 9:34American what would you do so bunch of
  277. 9:36people come and say stop that I say no
  278. 9:37I'm not going to stop that I'm an
  279. 9:38American what are you going to do
  280. 9:40next the First Amendment you know you
  281. 9:42want to talk about the first amendment
  282. 9:44Keda Scott King's letter wasn't allowed
  283. 9:46to be read on the floor of the Senate
  284. 9:48last week under the constitution in the
  285. 9:51sen exactly what happened and and yet at
  286. 9:53the same time you're the one then who's
  287. 9:56actually trying to defend someone like a
  288. 9:58fascist speaking recruiting at a college
  289. 10:00campus proud to say that we all your
  290. 10:03speech rights all right thanks for
  291. 10:04coming on
