  1. 0:00so we've been talking throughout the
  2. 0:01show about the role the media has played
  3. 0:03the role social media has played
  4. 0:04and kind of the shifting view of many on
  5. 0:06the right about what should be done
  6. 0:08specifically with social media
  7. 0:10what do you make of this moving forward
  8. 0:11if the republicans don't prevail tonight
  9. 0:13and if they're staring at four more
  10. 0:15years of a joe biden presidency or four
  11. 0:16new years of joe biden presidency
  12. 0:18should there be calls for serious reform
  13. 0:20on social media what should those look
  14. 0:21like and what do you think would be the
  15. 0:23conservative position
  16. 0:24with where things stand now so the
  17. 0:26proposal that's been put forward by
  18. 0:27marcia blackburn which is to look at
  19. 0:28section 230 and section 230
  20. 0:30uh contrary to popular opinions is not
  21. 0:32actually distinguished between publisher
  22. 0:33and platform
  23. 0:34it simply says that any open thread has
  24. 0:36to be treated as though the person who
  25. 0:38is in charge of the open thread is not
  26. 0:39responsible for the content they're in
  27. 0:41right so that we're not responsible at
  28. 0:42daily wire for the comments section
  29. 0:44under section 230 even if we curate the
  30. 0:46comment section section 230
  31. 0:48essentially says that you can mil you
  32. 0:51can moderate comments for purposes of
  33. 0:52obscenity
  34. 0:53um or you can do it for purposes of
  35. 0:55harassment and then there's a catch-all
  36. 0:57phrase or anything otherwise
  37. 0:58objectionable now what marsha blackburn
  38. 1:00has promoted
  39. 1:01and josh haley has promoted is getting
  40. 1:03rid of the otherwise objectionable
  41. 1:05standard and basically saying you can
  42. 1:06moderate for
  43. 1:07pornography you can moderate for
  44. 1:09harassment you can moderate
  45. 1:10for a wide variety of things but you
  46. 1:12cannot moderate for simple political
  47. 1:14disagreement
  48. 1:15without taking on the burdens of any
  49. 1:17other publisher right because now your
  50. 1:19editing
  51. 1:19is tantamount to me editing the daily
  52. 1:21wire i'm approving what is going up and
  53. 1:22down
  54. 1:23uh on the daily wire if i were the
  55. 1:24active editor i'm adorama right so right
  56. 1:26now it's uh john bickley obviously is
  57. 1:28editor-in-chief
  58. 1:28so that's that's a change that i think
  59. 1:30is is worth considering
  60. 1:32and frankly i think that uh many of the
  61. 1:34folks in social media would not be
  62. 1:35particularly unhappy at that at that
  63. 1:37change that that sort of moderate change
  64. 1:39that sort of mild change is not what
  65. 1:41democrats are looking for
  66. 1:42and this is what scares me is that if
  67. 1:44democrats were to gain office they would
  68. 1:45not be looking at it cut around cutting
  69. 1:47around the edges
  70. 1:48and making some sort of bipartisan deal
  71. 1:50that basically frees up people to speak
  72. 1:52more
  73. 1:52democrats are looking to have people
  74. 1:53speak less that entire facebook
  75. 1:55social media hearing that we saw
  76. 1:56facebook twitter and google
  77. 1:58and youtube that that social media
  78. 2:00hearing was plagued by republicans
  79. 2:02saying we want to see more speech on
  80. 2:04your platforms and democrats saying we
  81. 2:05want to see far less speech on your
  82. 2:07platforms
  83. 2:07ed markey was chiding zuckerberg and
  84. 2:09dorsey for allowing too much material
  85. 2:11on their platforms you saw the same
  86. 2:14thing from
  87. 2:15the senator from delaware i believe so
  88. 2:17you see you see this or chris murphy
  89. 2:19um from from connecticut you see this
  90. 2:20over and over from democrats
  91. 2:22that they're actually pushing hard
  92. 2:25against more free speech on these
  93. 2:26platforms so if democrats take over the
  94. 2:27white house and take over the senate
  95. 2:29i think what you are very likely to see
  96. 2:31is social media restricted with an
  97. 2:33oversight board run by somebody like
  98. 2:34elizabeth warren now that should scare
  99. 2:35the living hell out of republicans it's
  100. 2:36one of the reasons why i've been pretty
  101. 2:37libertarian on this stuff
  102. 2:39and if you are going to nibble around
  103. 2:40the edges of section 230 you have to be
  104. 2:42nibbling around the edges of 230 you
  105. 2:43can't
  106. 2:44turn the the social media sphere over to
  107. 2:47the predations
  108. 2:48of a government-run board which very
  109. 2:49often will be staffed by democrats
  110. 2:51well ben we really appreciate you being
  111. 2:53here and we will be seeing you a little
  112. 2:55later along with the rest of the daily
  113. 2:56wire team thanks for making time thanks
  114. 2:58so much
