  1. 0:00hey Ben I'm been waiting for a long time
  2. 0:02um I've kind of for this moment yeah
  3. 0:06well I've kind of pondered how to ask
  4. 0:07this but um how does your view of
  5. 0:09transgender issues work when STI
  6. 0:11scientific anti-realism as a concept
  7. 0:14exists you're going to have to explain
  8. 0:16that one all right so scientific
  9. 0:18anti-realism is the concept that when
  10. 0:20you see me you see you know my skin my
  11. 0:23hands everything about me but you do not
  12. 0:25see my cells you do not see my atoms you
  13. 0:28do not see the things that make up the
  14. 0:30things they are just physical so there
  15. 0:31is no really true way to prove other
  16. 0:33than by hitting me obviously um that I
  17. 0:36am right here if it is only us two
  18. 0:38talking um so therefore this would apply
  19. 0:41to um any gendering things including
  20. 0:44interex um which can have an XX or XY
  21. 0:47chromosome and have Androgen or um
  22. 0:49estrogen insensitivity um so uh so I
  23. 0:53just need you to narrow this down is the
  24. 0:54argument that things that that we don't
  25. 0:56understand the nature of things because
  26. 0:57we don't have microscopes and therefore
  27. 1:00we can't determine sex I I would like to
  28. 1:03narrow it down to
  29. 1:06um we cannot fully identify a gender of
  30. 1:09a person right when we see them so
  31. 1:12therefore um I believe that it is not
  32. 1:15within my own individual liberty to
  33. 1:17gender that person okay so okay so so
  34. 1:20here's my problem with that particular
  35. 1:21argument the answer is that in 99.8%
  36. 1:2499.9% of cases you absolutely can gender
  37. 1:26somebody based on looking at them like
  38. 1:28really if if you're going to use
  39. 1:30intersex people as an example of not
  40. 1:32being able to do that this does not
  41. 1:34obviate the biological duality of sex
  42. 1:36upon which all progeneration is based
  43. 1:38for all of human history and for all
  44. 1:39Maman species so interex people do not
  45. 1:42invalidate the concept of sex as a
  46. 1:44generality interex people are people who
  47. 1:46have a biological anomaly and by the way
  48. 1:49in most cases of interex those people
  49. 1:51still manifest as either a male or a
  50. 1:53female so the the the idea that interex
  51. 1:56exists does not invalidate the idea that
  52. 1:58there is a male and that there is a
  53. 1:59female or that in the the in nearly all
  54. 2:01cases I can tell the difference between
  55. 2:02a male and a female again I'm not saying
  56. 2:05by the way that if you can show me your
  57. 2:07chromosomal charts that you are actually
  58. 2:09not a male when you say that when I say
  59. 2:11that you're a male that I should stick
  60. 2:13with that biological objective standard
  61. 2:15like my my perception of you in other
  62. 2:17words is subject to my correct
  63. 2:20enunciation of an objective standard so
  64. 2:23the objective standard here's the here's
  65. 2:24the deal for all of human history there
  66. 2:26was an objective standard between male
  67. 2:27and female it was for the most for for
  68. 2:30nearly all of human history out of
  69. 2:32partial ignorance and partially because
  70. 2:33this is usually true it was out of
  71. 2:34genetic it was out of simply looking at
  72. 2:36people's genitals and assessing them
  73. 2:38based on their outward appearance right
  74. 2:39which is still true for nearly all human
  75. 2:41beings on planet Earth at all times
  76. 2:44okay is that you can't really describe
  77. 2:47someone without secondary sex
  78. 2:48characteristics and gender them into
  79. 2:50something well I mean you can based on
  80. 2:52primary sex characteristics if you can
  81. 2:53see their genitals doctors do this
  82. 2:55literally at Birth all the time right so
  83. 2:57this is so the so so but but but your
  84. 3:01point is correct if somebody was was
  85. 3:02male dressed as a female and I
  86. 3:04misgendered them and then they said oh
  87. 3:05look I'm male zip right then I would say
  88. 3:08correct then then correct I would say
  89. 3:12for all of human history you a male now
  90. 3:14the standard is chromosomal right it's
  91. 3:16the it's the srn Gene and all of this
  92. 3:18there is some objective standard in
  93. 3:20other words by which we can determine
  94. 3:21sex the problem I have with the
  95. 3:22transgender argument is that people are
  96. 3:24arguing that there is no objective
  97. 3:25standard that no objective standard
  98. 3:27exists by which I can determine sex and
  99. 3:28in fact sex is completely subjective I
  100. 3:30can determine my own gender based on no
  101. 3:33biology and in fact in in abeyance of
  102. 3:36biology I can have every single
  103. 3:38biological characteristic of a male and
  104. 3:40if I say I am female then I am female
  105. 3:42this is anti-scientific nonsense no yes
  106. 3:45Caitlyn Jenner had every biological
  107. 3:46characteristic of a male there is no
  108. 3:48evidence whatsoever that Caitlyn Jenner
  109. 3:49was a female because Caitlyn Jenner was
  110. 3:51an Olympic Athlete as a male with all of
  111. 3:54the chromosomes and all of the junk and
  112. 3:56all of it right that is it that is a
  113. 3:58biological male and then we are supposed
  114. 3:59to believe that Caitlyn Jenner is a
  115. 4:00female listen I'm happy to call Caitlyn
  116. 4:01Jenner Caitlyn because people can
  117. 4:03legally change their name if I were out
  118. 4:04to dinner with Caitlyn Jenner I wouldn't
  119. 4:06go out of my way to say Caitlyn Jenner
  120. 4:07is a he because why would I want to have
  121. 4:09a bad dinner with somebody but if I'm
  122. 4:11speaking in public with folks and I'm
  123. 4:13talking about the presence of sex
  124. 4:15there's not a biologist work their salt
  125. 4:17on planet Earth who would say that sex
  126. 4:19does not exist yeah I agree so if sex
  127. 4:22exists then what are the characteristics
  128. 4:23of Sex and the problem with biological
  129. 4:25anti-realism or scientific anti-realism
  130. 4:27as you're suggesting is that there is no
  131. 4:28actual standard of sex that it's
  132. 4:30completely
  133. 4:33malleable not it's okay we sorry do you
  134. 4:36have a quick response I don't want to
  135. 4:37cut you off um I'm not saying that sex
  136. 4:40is malleable I'm saying there is male
  137. 4:43and female biologically that is true yes
  138. 4:45right but I'm saying that gender is a
  139. 4:46spectrum I'm saying that there is at
  140. 4:48least male female and non-binary because
  141. 4:50of this strange and what what I'm saying
  142. 4:52is that there's a there's a there's a
  143. 4:53word game that goes on when people
  144. 4:55discuss gender because if we are talking
  145. 4:57about certain characteristics which we
  146. 4:58attribute to Mas or feminine if you want
  147. 5:00to say that there's a genetic male with
  148. 5:02feminine characteristics we're fine
  149. 5:04that's a male with feminine
  150. 5:05characteristics fine that's fine I mean
  151. 5:08okay so you're a man with feminine
  152. 5:10characteristics that's cool who cares
  153. 5:12okay but if but that doesn't make you a
  154. 5:14woman in other words if you are going
  155. 5:16what we are now doing is we're playing a
  156. 5:17semantic game where we say a male with
  157. 5:18feminine characteristics is a woman
  158. 5:20that's nonsense or a woman with male
  159. 5:22characteristics masculine
  160. 5:23characteristics is a man that's nonsense
  161. 5:25too and by the way it actually ends up
  162. 5:27misgendering a lot of people who are are
  163. 5:29just Butch women or or a feminite men
  164. 5:32yeah agree right so all of the so in
  165. 5:34other words by trying to separate out
  166. 5:35gender and sex completely and then by
  167. 5:38using terms like male and female or
  168. 5:39woman and man that are innately
  169. 5:42connected to sex what you are doing is
  170. 5:44deliberately not you what people are
  171. 5:45doing is deliberately confusing the
  172. 5:47issue such that you get idiocies like
  173. 5:49ilhan Omar writing to the powerlifting
  174. 5:51Association of the USA saying that a
  175. 5:54transgender woman who is a biological
  176. 5:55male should be able to compete against
  177. 5:57biological women because it is a myth
  178. 5:59that men can pick up heavier objects
  179. 6:00than women that is not a myth that's
  180. 6:02called
  181. 6:03science thank
  182. 6:08you
