- 0:02mr shelf got me started on my library
- 0:03i've got one of the better libraries
- 0:06haven't read everything in it but i feel
- 0:07smarter just walking in it by library
- 0:10at least i was smart enough to buy it
- 0:12now i got to be smart enough to read it
- 0:14then of course i got to be smart enough
- 0:16to decide what's valuable and then do it
- 0:18but this one is very important become a
- 0:20good reader
- 0:22some books that helped change my life mr
- 0:24schoff recommended of course the bible
- 0:26and my parents made sure i was a pretty
- 0:28good scholar by the time i was
- 0:2918 that's been so beneficial for me
- 0:32drawing from those illustrations uh
- 0:35reading about those stories people who
- 0:37made it and people who didn't make it
- 0:38and what the difference was
- 0:41and then other books that helped to
- 0:42really change my life one called
- 0:44think and grow rich by napoleon hill
- 0:48and then a book that helped me become
- 0:50financially independent by the time i
- 0:51was 31
- 0:52and that book is called the richest man
- 0:55in babylon
- 0:56by george clayson and i'm going to share
- 0:58a little bit of that book with you
- 1:00when i get to financial independence
- 1:02today our third subject
- 1:04but i started reading the books
- 1:06attending the classes
- 1:08making sure that i got in front of
- 1:10people that had something good to say
- 1:13and then i started keeping a journal one
- 1:15of the major things my teacher taught me
- 1:17was to keep a journal
- 1:19he said don't trust your memory if you
- 1:21hear something good just make a little
- 1:23note and write it down
- 1:25now at first i took you know notes on
- 1:27pieces of paper and torn off corners and
- 1:29backs of old envelopes
- 1:31and it didn't serve me well you know
- 1:32thrown in a drawer then i learned to
- 1:35keep
- 1:35a journal a bound copy of all my notes
- 1:39so i would suggest you do the same
- 1:42things that impress you a poem that
- 1:44impresses you when you attend a class
- 1:47some of the ideas that impressed you jot
- 1:49them down
- 1:50uh you read something in a magazine
- 1:52right some ideas
- 1:53take those out put them in your journal
- 1:55keep a good journal the rest of your
- 1:56life
- 1:57this will serve you well my journals
- 1:59make up a significant portion of my own
- 2:01library
- 2:02and if you saw my library and saw my
- 2:04journals i tell you what you'd have to
- 2:06say
- 2:07this is the library and these are the
- 2:09journals of a very serious student no
- 2:11wonder mr rhone is invited
- 2:13to lecture and speak on his experiences
- 2:15around the world so i want the same
- 2:17thing to happen to you
- 2:18value captured that you can resort to
- 2:21later go back
- 2:22over it and review it and let it become
- 2:24valuable to you
- 2:26so that's my first subject personal
- 2:27development work harder on yourself than
- 2:30you do on your job
- 2:32develop the skills learn the lessons
- 2:35take the classes absorb all that
- 2:38is being taught to you these days and
- 2:41then later on of course you can sort it
- 2:42out what's valuable to you and how to
- 2:44refine it
- 2:45for your business and for your life and
- 2:47for your future but the main thing is to
- 2:49get it and start this process of
- 2:51personal change
- 2:52personal development and let me say it
- 2:54one more time if you will change
- 2:57everything will change for you you'll
- 2:59never be the same
- 3:00you'll keep growing as you look back on
- 3:03a few months look back on a few years
- 3:04you won't believe the progress you can
- 3:06make economically
- 3:07your relationship with your family your
- 3:09friends and whether you're in sports or
- 3:12economics or whatever i'm telling you
- 3:14that whole process of committing
- 3:16yourself for personal
- 3:18change personal value can really make
- 3:21your life unique and worthwhile
- 3:23now let's cover the second subject on
- 3:25setting goals
- 3:27mr shelf gave me some tips on setting
- 3:28goals that changed my life forever
- 3:31and i want to share those with you so
- 3:33let's talk about setting goals and i
- 3:35also want to tie it
- 3:37to personal development and you'll see
- 3:40how i'm going to do it as i progress
- 3:41here setting goals
- 3:43we need to take a look into the future
- 3:46there are
- 3:48four things to consider in terms of
- 3:50attitude one is how you feel about the
- 3:52past
- 3:54best advice i can give you on that is
- 3:56treat the past as a school let it teach
- 3:58you the mistakes you've made the things
- 3:59that went wrong the things that didn't
- 4:01work
- 4:02don't use the past as a burden to carry
- 4:04and don't use the past as a club to beat
- 4:06yourself to death
- 4:07past losses past failures past mistakes
- 4:10but let the past be a school
- 4:12tough school maybe we've all been
- 4:13through some tough stuff
- 4:15so if you feel good about the past draw
- 4:18from it for experience and let it teach
- 4:20you
- 4:21then next is how you feel about the
- 4:23future we've got to have the future well
- 4:25designed
- 4:27the future is called the promise
- 4:30and here's what we teach in our
- 4:31leadership series
- 4:33the promise of the future can be an
- 4:35awesome force
- 4:37for your own future the promise of the
- 4:40future
- 4:41designing the future there's two ways to
- 4:42face the future one is with apprehension
- 4:45and the other is with anticipation i
- 4:48promise you in my travels around the
- 4:50world
- 4:50most people face the future with
- 4:52apprehension and here's why they don't
- 4:54have it well designed
- 4:56they've sort of left that up to someone
- 4:58else to fix
- 5:00but here's the best way to face the
- 5:01future with anticipation
- 5:03and you can you can face the future with
- 5:05anticipation
- 5:06if the future is clear if the future is
- 5:10well designed and i would like to have
- 5:13you
- 5:14consider some thoughts with me that
- 5:17helped me
- 5:18to really change my future by giving it
- 5:21some thought and some consideration
- 5:24and here it is in setting goals it's
- 5:26very simple number one
- 5:27decide what you want you just take a
- 5:30little time
- 5:31you sit down and say what do i want what
- 5:33kind of skills do i want what kind of
- 5:35income do i want for the future uh what
- 5:38would i like
- 5:39where would i like to go places i'd like
- 5:42to visit
- 5:43uh habits i'd like to acquire skills i'd
- 5:46like to have
- 5:48you just take a little time to think
- 5:49about what you want economics
- 5:51friendships
- 5:53people you'd like to meet places you'd
- 5:55like to go you just take some time
- 5:57and then i suggest when you've thought
- 5:59about what you want for the future
- 6:01make a list just jot it all down
- 6:04so really a very simple process and then
- 6:07here's number three
- 6:09keep all the old lists i'm telling you
- 6:12this served me so well
- 6:14keeping my old list of goals i look back
- 6:17now 10
- 6:1820 years ago at goals i set lists i made
- 6:20and i smile now because here's what i
- 6:22thought was so important
- 6:24you know 20 years ago now some of those
- 6:26things aren't even on my list
- 6:28i've got a new list i've grown i've
- 6:31changed i've matured
- 6:33but i give you that advice decide what
- 6:35you want number two write it down number
- 6:36three keep the old lists
- 6:39and then here's number four when you get
- 6:41something that's on one of these lists
- 6:43check it off part of the fun of having a
- 6:45list is checking it off
- 6:47and then if you can add some drama to
- 6:49checking it off see that's what really
- 6:51helps
- 6:52i set a goal to go to spain many many
- 6:54years ago
- 6:56and when i finally made my first trip to
- 6:58spain i had that journal with me that
- 6:59had that list in it and while i had my
- 7:02journal on my lap
- 7:04waiting for the wheels to touch down in
- 7:06madrid
- 7:07i waited until the wheels touched the
- 7:09runway and i checked it off
- 7:11just adding a little drama so part of
- 7:14the fun of having a list is checking it
- 7:16off
- 7:17now here's what's important about the
- 7:19list and designing your future
- 7:22if the future gets clear the price
- 7:26gets easier because you got to remember
- 7:29for every
- 7:30promise there's a price to pay
- 7:33everybody's got to pay the price
- 7:35everybody's got to do the deal
- 7:37everybody's got to do the disciplines
- 7:39everybody has to pay
- 7:41but here's what i've discovered if the
- 7:43promise is clear
- 7:45and powerful the price is easy to pay
- 7:49the prices some classes the price is a
- 7:51few books the price is a few disciplines
- 7:54the price is finding something that will
- 7:55make your life better make you grow make
- 7:57you change make you develop
- 7:59so the first part of the key is to
- 8:01design the promise then what is the
- 8:03price to pay i'm telling you
- 8:04the price will be easy anybody in my
- 8:08audience can pay it no matter where you
- 8:10are where you come from
- 8:12color doesn't matter religion doesn't
- 8:13matter where you grew up doesn't matter
- 8:14circumstances don't matter i'm telling
- 8:16you
- 8:17if you'll make the promise of the future
- 8:19clear for yourself the things you want
- 8:21the places you want to go
- 8:22the things you want to have the person
- 8:24you want to become the skills you want
- 8:26the homes you want the future you want
- 8:28the friends you want
- 8:30all of the values of life that you could
- 8:32possibly want
- 8:33if you'll make that clear make those
- 8:35lists and be serious about it i promise
- 8:38you it's an
- 8:38easy price to pay anybody can pay it
- 8:42and the best advice i can give you is if
- 8:44i can do it you can do it
- 8:45farm boy from idaho raised in obscurity
- 8:48i changed my life
- 8:49turned it upside down turned it all
- 8:51around
- 8:52found economics found future found
- 8:54promise and if i can do it you can do it
- 8:57so start setting your goals and see if
- 9:00you can't get a
- 9:01better excitement going for the things
- 9:04you want to accomplish for the future
