Behind the Scenes: Creating an Apartment Renovation Drawing Set Fast — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone and welcome to what's in my
- 0:02architectural document set. My name is
- 0:04Dianiela and I'm an interior designer.
- 0:06In this video I'm going to be walking
- 0:08you through a complete renovation
- 0:10drawing set. I'm going to talk about how
- 0:11you can make your own renovation drawing
- 0:13set. How to make it clean, organized,
- 0:16consistent, and easy to read. I'm going
- 0:19to be using Rayon Design today. You
- 0:21don't need to download a million
- 0:23different softwares create beautiful
- 0:25interior design drawings. And trust me,
- 0:27I've been there. I've done that. And I'm
- 0:29telling you, you can do it all with Ray.
- 0:31So check the description and download
- 0:33the templates and follow along with me.
- 0:37I want to talk a little bit about the
- 0:39fundamentals. So the hierarchy of the
- 0:42drawing package, it goes from overview
- 0:45to smaller detail. You don't want to
- 0:47overwhelm your client or the contractor.
- 0:50You really want to hold their hand and
- 0:52take them step by step through the
- 0:55drawing package. So the first page is
- 0:57just a title page to introduce someone
- 1:00to the project. And then we get into the
- 1:03different layouts such as the demolition
- 1:05plan, construction plan. We'll get into
- 1:08the lighting plan, the furniture plan.
- 1:11Then slowly you get into sections and
- 1:13elevations. From there, you get into the
- 1:16nitty-gritty. You get into all of the
- 1:18furniture you've sourced and tile, mood
- 1:21boards. From then you've painted the
- 1:24full picture of the project. You want to
- 1:26wow your clients and you want your
- 1:28contractors to stay on track and
- 1:30actually understand the drawings. Let's
- 1:32get into the first page of this drawing
- 1:34set. So here we are. We're in the
- 1:37drawing set and I'm zoomed in on the
- 1:41cover sheet and sheet legend.
- 1:45So let's zoom in a little further here.
- 1:49So, as we can see, we're sort of teasing
- 1:52the client, you know, with this
- 1:54beautiful rendering. We have the project
- 1:57name, we have the address, we have the
- 2:01client, we have some information. This
- 2:04is really just to excite the client,
- 2:07introduce them to your design, right?
- 2:12The next sheets, we have the drawing set
- 2:14legend. So, I think we're all familiar
- 2:18with, you know, a legend and we have all
- 2:21of the drawings here that we're actually
- 2:23going to go through today. We have the
- 2:25page where you can find, you know, these
- 2:28drawings and again, we have that
- 2:31consistent theme with the beautiful
- 2:33render. And that's all there is to it.
- 2:37There's not much to it, but I would say
- 2:39that these pages are very critical
- 2:42because if they don't look good, your
- 2:45client's not going to be very excited
- 2:48and you want to set the project off on a
- 2:50very good note. So, let's move on to the
- 2:54construction and demolition plan. Okay,
- 2:57so you can see that I've zoomed in on
- 2:59the demolition plan, which is really the
- 3:01first plan that you should pay attention
- 3:03to. And as you'll notice, there's a lot
- 3:06of red and there's a lot of hatching.
- 3:08What that means is it's going and that's
- 3:11industry standard. So this should be
- 3:13understood by your tradesmen.
- 3:16We'll zoom in a little more here. And we
- 3:18can see that there is a very clear and
- 3:20precise legend. And you can even see
- 3:23it's here marked walls for demolition.
- 3:28And we can take a look at the plan and
- 3:30we can see what's going to be going on
- 3:32here. So, it looks like we're going to
- 3:34have a little bit more of an open floor
- 3:37plan. And we can see how that's going to
- 3:40come to life once we go to the
- 3:42construction plan.
- 3:44So, as you can see, the construction
- 3:47plan, it looks a little different.
- 3:50There's blue now. So, blue is indicating
- 3:54what's new work, what's staying, what's
- 3:56new work, what's going to be added. So,
- 3:58think walls, underheated flooring zones.
- 4:02We're thinking new construction,
- 4:04material types, heating circuits, and
- 4:07once again, this is all verified by this
- 4:10legend here. So, it's very important for
- 4:13there to be a very clear legend. You
- 4:15obviously don't want your tradesman to
- 4:17be confused on site. That's probably the
- 4:20worst thing that can happen. So, now I'm
- 4:22actually going to show you how you can
- 4:24draw a wall in rayon. And it's super
- 4:27super easy. All you need to do is zoom
- 4:29in on where you want to draw this wall.
- 4:32and click wall.
- 4:34Then it will prompt you to click a
- 4:36starting point. So let's say I want my
- 4:38wall to be here. And as you can see, you
- 4:41can click and drag, or you can be more
- 4:44intentional and type in the distance
- 4:47right here. But I'm just going to click
- 4:50and drag and click here. And as you can
- 4:53see, you can actually continuously go on
- 4:56and draw all your walls so they're
- 4:58attached. But I'm just going to hit
- 5:00escape. And now I have this wall here.
- 5:04And you can see that it matches the
- 5:07current styling of the other walls in
- 5:09this drawing, which makes sense. But
- 5:11let's say I want to change this wall for
- 5:13whatever reason. I can just click here.
- 5:17I can detach this wall and I could
- 5:20change the thickness. So I can make it
- 5:23really thick.
- 5:26I can change the hatch.
- 5:30[Music]
- 5:32I could change the color.
- 5:36So, you can really customize each wall.
- 5:40You can also change the existing walls.
- 5:44So, let's say here I wanted to change
- 5:46this to red. I could just click on it,
- 5:50click the style,
- 5:53and change the color. We are at the
- 5:56lighting and power plant.
- 5:58Obviously, this is critical information
- 6:01for the electrician, but let's take a
- 6:03little bit of a closer look here. We can
- 6:06find fixtures, switches, outlets, and
- 6:10it's all going to be described here on
- 6:13the legend.
- 6:14So, you're going to look over here.
- 6:16We're going to see what signifies a
- 6:19single key switch, two key switch.
- 6:23This is a typical block for a surface
- 6:26mounted ceiling light. And let's
- 6:29actually go into the drawing. And you're
- 6:32going to see, you know, these hatch
- 6:34lines that indicate that these light
- 6:37fixtures are connected.
- 6:39And when it comes to lighting plans, you
- 6:42know, it they're very technical. They're
- 6:44not my favorite to design, I'll be
- 6:47honest, but they are very essential,
- 6:51obviously. And lighting design is very
- 6:54important. Good lighting is very
- 6:56important to the final appeal of the
- 6:59project. So you may be struggling with
- 7:02this, especially if you're a student. I
- 7:04know, you know, I'm more on the creative
- 7:06end. I don't although I can do it, it is
- 7:09a bit of a pain. So Rayon actually has
- 7:12more information on how to create these
- 7:14lighting plans. So check out Rayon's how
- 7:17to create lighting and power plants. It
- 7:19will be linked in the description.
- 7:22Anyhow, let's get back to looking at
- 7:24this drawing.
- 7:26So,
- 7:28let's say I want to actually add a light
- 7:31fixture to this. It's very easy. Let's
- 7:34go into Rayon's block library, which has
- 7:37over 4,000 blocks, which just is going
- 7:40to make your life a lot easier. So,
- 7:42let's click this little cube,
- 7:46and we're going to click libraries, and
- 7:48let's sort of let's browse a little bit.
- 7:51Um, maybe we'll Yeah, you see I was
- 7:53looking up bathroom
- 7:55because bathrooms there's so many blocks
- 7:57that go into bathrooms. I mean, so you
- 8:00can see here they have just so many
- 8:03blocks, you know, very detailed um items
- 8:06such as the towel rail, you have
- 8:08toilets, you have even a towel hook.
- 8:12Like this is this is like such this goes
- 8:14such into the nitty-gritty. And we can
- 8:17even click and it's going to show you
- 8:20the top view, the front view, the side
- 8:23view. So you have it all. Let's quickly
- 8:27browse maybe kitchen. Considering in a
- 8:31kitchen, you know, typically there's a
- 8:33lot of blocks that you got to input
- 8:34there. So you can immediately see
- 8:37there's the kitchen sink.
- 8:40Oh, we got a wood kitchen hood.
- 8:43That's fancy.
- 8:46Okay. So, there's a there's a Oh, you
- 8:49got a wall shelf. That's what I got
- 8:52going on in my kitchen over here. So,
- 8:55there like once I like I said, there's
- 8:57over 4,000 blocks. So, you can get
- 9:00creative and it's easy. So, okay, let's
- 9:04go back to lighting. That's what we're
- 9:06doing, right? So, I'm going to type in
- 9:08lights.
- 9:11And what do I want to do?
- 9:16Let's zoom in a little bit. Maybe I'll
- 9:18add a sconce.
- 9:20Okay, let's let's take a look at this.
- 9:25Okay, so here is the top.
- 9:29Maybe I should zoom in a little bit
- 9:30more.
- 9:32So, let's add it here. You know, this
- 9:36this is just this is just to show you
- 9:38how to do it. Um, okay. So, we've
- 9:42rotated, which is very easy. You just
- 9:44hold it
- 9:46and the little rotation icon will pop up
- 9:50and I' I've placed it against the wall.
- 9:52Let me scale it. It kind of looks a
- 9:53little big. So, we can scale it.
- 9:58That's pretty much it. It's pretty easy.
- 9:59Like I said, this was just an example to
- 10:02show you with lighting design. It's a
- 10:04little bit more advanced and there's a
- 10:06little bit more thought that goes into
- 10:08it. Um, but yeah, we can just click and
- 10:11we can delete and let's move on to the
- 10:13next drawing. Okay, so now we're moving
- 10:15on to the furnishing and flooring plan.
- 10:18And in this case, we've combined these
- 10:20plans. So sometimes you'll see in a
- 10:22drawing set that they're actually
- 10:24separate. So you'll see a drawing that
- 10:26has materials of, you know, flooring and
- 10:29such, and you'll see furniture separate.
- 10:31So you'll have to sort of use your
- 10:33discretion as a designer to see, you
- 10:36know, if they need to be separate or if
- 10:39it's not too cluttered that they are
- 10:41together. So in this case, because we
- 10:45have our furniture blocks that are in
- 10:47nice light line weight, which I always
- 10:50recommend, we can get away with
- 10:53combining these plans into one. And it
- 10:55also gives a little bit of a more
- 10:57holistic picture of how this place is
- 11:00coming together.
- 11:02So, as we can see, everything is clearly
- 11:05marked. We also have, you know, our
- 11:08trusty legend, of course, but you're
- 11:11going to have to zoom in and take a look
- 11:14at what's going on and the specifics.
- 11:18As you can see, we also have this
- 11:21beautiful flooring here, but we don't
- 11:23have any flooring in the bedroom, which,
- 11:27you know, maybe we want to represent
- 11:29that. Maybe we want to even, you know,
- 11:31funk it up there. This, this isn't a
- 11:34tutorial on how to design. This is a
- 11:36tutorial on how you get to design. So,
- 11:40let's take a look on how we can actually
- 11:42add a realistic texture here. So, we're
- 11:45going to click. And as you can see, we
- 11:48have styles. And right now, we sort of
- 11:51just have this hatch, right? So,
- 11:54signifying we actually need to add
- 11:55something. So, let's let's take a look.
- 11:58Let's take a look at the library. So,
- 12:00there we go. We have the beautiful
- 12:02chevron flooring, which I love. Uh
- 12:06probably one of my favorite flooring.
- 12:07But we also have we got some concrete.
- 12:10We got some tile.
- 12:12We got brick, which would, you know, be
- 12:15more suitable for a wall. We got some
- 12:17wood. Oh, we got some herring bone. Um,
- 12:21I also love that. Um, we got some rustic
- 12:24floor.
- 12:27H. So, we got some let, you know, let's
- 12:29let's go for this one. Let's go for this
- 12:31one. And I wouldn't pair these two
- 12:34floors together, but once again, this
- 12:36is, you know, you you got to design
- 12:39yourself. I'm just showing you how to
- 12:41use Rayon.
- 12:43And let's rotate it. Right? Maybe we
- 12:46want to we want to funk it up further.
- 12:48So we click add tiling
- 12:50and we can control
- 12:54the rotation here. So let's say, you
- 12:57know, I want to rotate it this way or
- 13:00Okay. Let's say I'm happy with that. We
- 13:02can click out. And there you go. We have
- 13:06uh we have flooring. So you can go
- 13:09through and you can detail your drawing
- 13:12with different materials. And this once
- 13:15again it helps your client visualize the
- 13:18material. And obviously the furniture
- 13:22plan is very important. And it's very
- 13:24important for it to be two scale, right?
- 13:28Because you want to make sure everything
- 13:30is going to fit properly. Trust me, it's
- 13:33an amateur mistake not to have a two
- 13:36scale furniture plan.
- 13:41So, now we're going to move on to
- 13:44sections and elevations. And this is a
- 13:47very important piece puzzle. I say that
- 13:50because typically clients love to refer
- 13:53to these drawings. As you'll see here,
- 13:57they do give you more of a realistic
- 13:59view of how things are going to come
- 14:02together. So, you can see heights here.
- 14:05You can see, you know, the relationship
- 14:08between all of the items, you know, the
- 14:10spacing. Um, this is especially critical
- 14:14for mill work. So, think kitchens, you
- 14:16know, bathrooms, anything custom. It's
- 14:19very critical for the mill workers, the
- 14:21trades, and once again for your clients
- 14:24to really visualize their space. So,
- 14:27typically the scale is at 1 to 25. But
- 14:31you're going to have to refer to the
- 14:33drawings to, you know, verify that.
- 14:36And as you can see here, we got some
- 14:38materials. We have furniture here. So,
- 14:43these are very detailed plans and
- 14:46they're coming at the end of the drawing
- 14:48set.
- 14:49Let's take a look at this section here.
- 14:53So like I was saying mill work very very
- 14:56critical drawing you know every
- 14:59millimeter counts. So it's very
- 15:01important to include these in your you
- 15:04know drawing set and to be very very
- 15:07detailed and double check everything.
- 15:10So, Rayon can help you create realistic
- 15:152D section renders, which not easy to
- 15:20create, but it's easy with Rayon. This
- 15:23will certainly improve your workflow and
- 15:26it will improve your communication
- 15:28between, you know, the mill worker and
- 15:30yourself.
- 15:32And Rayon itself, you know, allows you
- 15:36to actually communicate with trades,
- 15:38with clients, whoever you want to
- 15:40invite. So, I'm going to show you now
- 15:42how to add a comments and how we can
- 15:44actually share this drawing. So, here I
- 15:47am on this elevation and let's say I
- 15:50want to add a comment.
- 15:52So, I can click here on this little
- 15:54comment box. It looks like a chat. And
- 15:57you can already see that I've actually
- 15:59added a comment. I said, "I don't like
- 16:01the art. My tag Joe,
- 16:04you know, not the nicest comment, but in
- 16:06design, you got to be you got to be
- 16:08honest." Let's say I want to add another
- 16:11one. And I can say I can leave a nice
- 16:14comment. I can say, "I like the sofa."
- 16:18And I can tag Joe. Again, if Joe was on
- 16:22my team, he would pop up and I'd be able
- 16:24to tag him. And I could simply post. So
- 16:27now we have two comments and Joe can
- 16:30respond.
- 16:31So let's say that I actually want to
- 16:34share this drawing. I can just go over
- 16:37here and press share. And this is going
- 16:40to give me a few different options. So I
- 16:43can type in different emails
- 16:46and I can have, you know, them just view
- 16:49the drawing. I can have them edit
- 16:52depending on who it is, right? So you
- 16:55can add your clients here. Obviously you
- 16:56can add you know a team member or I can
- 17:00even just share a link. I can create a
- 17:04link. Whoever has the link can access.
- 17:07So
- 17:08it depends on your needs. But it's very
- 17:11very easy to share and there are
- 17:14different ways that you can share. You
- 17:16can just share it as a presentation.
- 17:19Once again if it's going to your clients
- 17:21that's probably the way that you want to
- 17:23go. And if it's going to someone that
- 17:26you want, you know, to edit possibly,
- 17:30you would give them a little bit more
- 17:31access.
- 17:34So now we're at the end of the drawing
- 17:37package and we're at the mood boards and
- 17:40FF and E pages. So that's furniture,
- 17:44fixtures, and equipment if you didn't
- 17:46know. So this is a very visual portion
- 17:49of the drawing package and it really
- 17:52helps clients, you know, see how all of
- 17:54the sourcing comes together. So you can
- 17:57see here there's, you know, this
- 17:59beautiful table of showing the wall
- 18:01finishes, right? We can go over here and
- 18:05we see all of the light fixtures, how
- 18:08they're actually going to look. And, you
- 18:11know, they're coming together
- 18:12beautifully, I must say.
- 18:15And once we get into the mood boards,
- 18:18people love mood boards because you
- 18:20really do understand how the space will
- 18:22look. Of course, there's a beautiful
- 18:23render. There's further information on
- 18:27some of the finishes.
- 18:29And we can see the same over here. Once
- 18:33again, nice large photos of the actual
- 18:37finishes, right? So, it's critical to
- 18:43show the aesthetic and also the
- 18:45technical information. You have to have
- 18:47both. So, let's say, you know, we want
- 18:50to swap some things on this mood board.
- 18:53So, let's take a look here. We have
- 18:56these two beautiful chairs, all fine and
- 18:59dandy. Let's delete one. And we can see,
- 19:02you know, once again, love this little
- 19:04collage.
- 19:07Let's
- 19:08actually import a new photo and I'll
- 19:12show you how easy it is to remove the
- 19:14background because as we all know when
- 19:16we're sourcing and we're saving photos,
- 19:19you get these ugly backgrounds and you
- 19:22don't want that. You don't want to show
- 19:24your client that.
- 19:26So, I've just imported this
- 19:29and let's edit.
- 19:34And we can just remove the background
- 19:35here.
- 19:40Done. You can edit some of the photo
- 19:43details if you really need.
- 19:47And now we can scale it
- 19:50and we can plop it
- 19:53wherever we want.
- 19:57Not bad. Kind of goes with the chair.
- 20:01But anyhow, these are some very critical
- 20:04pages.
- 20:06And you want clear references. You want
- 20:08tags that link directly into the
- 20:11drawing. So it's very intuitive. You
- 20:13don't want your clients sort of going
- 20:14back and forth looking. You want it to
- 20:17be as user friendly as possible. And you
- 20:20know that's very possible with Rayon.
- 20:23That is how you can create a complete
- 20:26apartment renovation drawing set. If
- 20:28you'd like to try this for yourself, you
- 20:30can download the free apartment
- 20:32renovation template. It will be linked
- 20:34below. And also keep in mind that Rayon
- 20:37has a ton of other templates that are
- 20:40free to you, which is absolutely
- 20:42amazing. So, you can customize these
- 20:44templates, really make them your own
- 20:46with your own branding. And there's also
- 20:48a ton of other things that you can do.
- 20:50You can import and export drawings. You
- 20:53can extract data and create tables. You
- 20:55only need one app, which is Rayon. So,
- 20:59if you have any questions for the Rayon
- 21:01team, you can leave them down below.
- 21:03We'll get back to you. We'd be happy to
- 21:05chat. And we hope that you stick around,
- 21:09subscribe, and we'll see you in the next
