  1. 0:01Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy
  2. 0:03and blessings. How are you doing,
  3. 0:05fellow subscribers? I hope you are all
  4. 0:11in good health, and on this Valentine's
  5. 0:14Day, on this voting day, um, today,
  6. 0:16February 14, 2024, I would like to
  7. 0:19share my experience with all of you,
  8. 0:29especially those who have asked a lot
  9. 0:31about how to establish a community
  10. 0:33reading garden. Now, what is a
  11. 0:38community reading garden? Well, it's a
  12. 0:46space for creativity within the
  13. 0:48community, a library that doesn't just
  14. 0:50invite people to be literate by reading
  15. 0:52books, but also hosts many other
  16. 0:54educational activities managed by the
  17. 0:57reading garden organizers, literacy
  18. 0:59activists, ranging from the
  19. 1:00aforementioned reading activities,
  20. 1:02storytelling, writing, to social
  21. 1:04inclusion activities. Now, these social
  22. 1:16inclusion activities are essentially
  23. 1:18about how to transform a library so it
  24. 1:20can generate something from the reading
  25. 1:22garden itself. For example, a reading
  26. 1:33garden might run a goat farming
  27. 1:34business, or create a duck pond and so
  28. 1:36on, or make screen-printed clothing to
  29. 1:39sell, or other merchandise that can
  30. 1:40provide financial benefits for the
  31. 1:42reading garden organizers and the
  32. 1:44surrounding community they support. So,
  33. 1:53the first step that those of you who
  34. 1:55want to open a reading garden need to
  35. 1:58take is, of course, to provide a space.
  36. 2:01Provide a space, yes. Where should the
  37. 2:04space be? Well, ideally, it could be in
  38. 2:08your own home, the house where the
  39. 2:10reading garden organizer resides. It
  40. 2:17could be a private home or a rented
  41. 2:19house, but, of course, a private home
  42. 2:21is preferred as it can be permanent. So
  43. 2:26that the reading garden won't have to
  44. 2:27keep moving. Because there are many
  45. 2:29experiences of reading gardens started
  46. 2:31by friends. But because they were in
  47. 2:35rented houses, when they had to move,
  48. 2:37the reading garden had to move as well.
  49. 2:44Even though they might have had many
  50. 2:46people they supported and many local
  51. 2:48children they were helping, when they
  52. 2:49moved, they had to start from scratch
  53. 2:51again. A permanent home is highly
  54. 2:56recommended. If it's a permanent home,
  55. 3:00then the activities can also be
  56. 3:01permanent. Now, because a reading
  57. 3:06garden requires a space, this space
  58. 3:08must be made as attractive as possible.
  59. 3:12In today's youth slang, it has to be "
  60. 3:14Instagrammable." It must be attractive
  61. 3:17with specific spots. The library
  62. 3:21bookshelves should be arranged in such
  63. 3:23a way, laid out in such a way that it
  64. 3:25looks attractive to the eye, and can
  65. 3:27serve as photo spots for the visitors
  66. 3:29who come there. That is the first step.
  67. 3:35Then the second step, of course, is
  68. 3:37that you must have personnel who can
  69. 3:39manage the reading garden. Who are the
  70. 3:43personnel that can manage it? Well, of
  71. 3:45course, there should be librarians. Now
  72. 3:48, librarians do not have to be
  73. 3:50professional librarians who are
  74. 3:52graduates from, um, a library science
  75. 3:55college, you know. Volunteer workers
  76. 4:00from among students or other members of
  77. 4:02the general public who have an interest
  78. 4:04in taking care of books, um, can become
  79. 4:06librarians at that reading garden. Of
  80. 4:13course, keep upgrading your knowledge
  81. 4:15and adding to your experience, so you
  82. 4:17have the ability to manage an engaging
  83. 4:19reading garden library, with
  84. 4:21well-organized and labeled books, among
  85. 4:23other things. This way, when visitors
  86. 4:30come to the reading garden and need
  87. 4:32specific books, they can look them up
  88. 4:34in the database you have. Now, of
  89. 4:41course, these volunteers, because they
  90. 4:43are voluntary, may not always be
  91. 4:45permanent. They might not stay if the
  92. 4:52reading garden isn't very active or
  93. 4:54doesn't have many activities. Therefore
  94. 5:01, you need volunteers who can truly
  95. 5:03help with programs and conceptualize
  96. 5:05them so that the reading garden can be
  97. 5:07active at all times. If it can be every
  98. 5:12day, that's better, but at least there
  99. 5:14should be activities in the reading
  100. 5:16garden two or three times a week. Now,
  101. 5:21after having a place and volunteers,
  102. 5:23the most urgent thing is that a reading
  103. 5:25garden's program must be a priority for
  104. 5:28the management. What kind of programs?
  105. 5:34There are many programs that can be
  106. 5:36carried out by reading garden managers
  107. 5:38so that the reading garden can grow.
  108. 5:48Those programs range from encouraging
  109. 5:51the community to read books, to perhaps
  110. 5:53offering English courses, writing
  111. 5:55classes, sewing, cooking, and specific
  112. 5:57skill-related training, such as making
  113. 5:59clothes or other crafts that can be
  114. 6:01sold, and engaging the community so
  115. 6:03that the reading garden becomes a
  116. 6:05community hub. So it's not just
  117. 6:17monotonous within the reading garden
  118. 6:19environment, but it can also involve
  119. 6:21the community. Make the reading garden
  120. 6:25a center for community activities. So
  121. 6:29youth, parents, farmers, and others can
  122. 6:32utilize the reading garden for meetings
  123. 6:34, deliberations, discussions, and so on
  124. 6:37. Next, of course, for a reading garden
  125. 6:44to receive government assistance, it is
  126. 6:46important to establish its legal
  127. 6:48standing. The legal standing here
  128. 6:54refers to its notary deed. Then,
  129. 7:00process the permits with the non-formal
  130. 7:02education section at the Department of
  131. 7:04Education. If necessary, also register
  132. 7:10with the Library Office for routine
  133. 7:12guidance regarding library management.
  134. 7:19If you already have legal standing,
  135. 7:21then when government assistance is
  136. 7:23available, your community reading
  137. 7:24garden can be prioritized to receive
  138. 7:26that aid. Currently, there is a lot of
  139. 7:35assistance provided by government
  140. 7:37agencies, especially from the Language
  141. 7:39Agency and the National Library, among
  142. 7:42others, that have government aid
  143. 7:43programs for literacy hubs, especially
  144. 7:46community reading gardens. If you want
  145. 7:55to be independent without receiving aid
  146. 7:57, you don't necessarily have to process
  147. 7:59the legal entity, but you will have to
  148. 8:01spend your own money, use personal
  149. 8:03funds, or build partnerships with
  150. 8:05private institutions or influential
  151. 8:07figures who care about literacy. So,
  152. 8:13the most important thing first is how
  153. 8:15you can carry out activities actively,
  154. 8:18bit by bit, over time. One day, when a
  155. 8:22legal entity is truly required, that
  156. 8:24legality can be processed. So it
  157. 8:28doesn't have to be the legality first;
  158. 8:30start by being active to strengthen
  159. 8:32your reading garden. Now, an active
  160. 8:36reading garden must, of course, let the
  161. 8:38public know what its activities are. To
  162. 8:41ensure the public knows, the use of
  163. 8:44social media and conventional media
  164. 8:46becomes very urgent and very important.
  165. 8:51Therefore, a reading garden must have
  166. 8:53Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube,
  167. 8:56and so on, so that your programs can be
  168. 8:58shared on those social media channels.
  169. 9:02If necessary, have a website for it.
  170. 9:09That website will become its own
  171. 9:11conventional media for reading garden
  172. 9:13managers, so it can be shared more
  173. 9:15broadly, and when checked on Google,
  174. 9:17your reading garden will be easily
  175. 9:18found by certain parties, its
  176. 9:20activities discovered, so they can come
  177. 9:22to visit your reading garden. Then they
  178. 9:31might be able to establish an MOU for
  179. 9:33cooperation to provide government
  180. 9:35assistance, various programs from the
  181. 9:37private sector, and so on. So, this
  182. 9:43publication holds an important position
  183. 9:45. Next is how you can also build
  184. 9:53relationships as widely as possible,
  185. 9:55not just in the local village or area
  186. 9:57where you reside, but also by building
  187. 9:59relationships at the city, provincial,
  188. 10:02and national levels. Now, how can these
  189. 10:08relationships be strengthened? Perhaps
  190. 10:12you have friends or acquaintances in
  191. 10:14the legislature or executive branch;
  192. 10:16build a broad network there. When they
  193. 10:23create a program, perhaps your reading
  194. 10:25garden can be strengthened through
  195. 10:26their programs. Your reading garden
  196. 10:33could be given all sorts of assistance.
  197. 10:39Then they can also socialize and
  198. 10:41promote the reading garden to their
  199. 10:43environment and network so that one day
  200. 10:45your reading garden will be seen more
  201. 10:47widely. So, building these
  202. 10:53relationships is very important for
  203. 10:55strengthening a reading garden. Then,
  204. 11:00of course, besides the aforementioned
  205. 11:03publication, it is also important how a
  206. 11:05reading garden, while having social
  207. 11:08media, also documents everything
  208. 11:10related to its activities, starting
  209. 11:12from videos, photos, correspondence,
  210. 11:14and guest lists. This is so that,
  211. 11:20perhaps one day, if there is some kind
  212. 11:22of competition, those archived
  213. 11:24documents can be reviewed and evaluated
  214. 11:27, and so on. These are some
  215. 11:36reinforcements that can serve as a
  216. 11:37guide for you to create a reading
  217. 11:39garden if you have an interest in
  218. 11:41literacy activities, which today are
  219. 11:43attracting a lot of attention and
  220. 11:44seeing many literacy activists emerging
  221. 11:46. I have two reading gardens in West
  222. 11:55Sumatra: one in Padang Panjang called
  223. 11:58Ruang Baca Rimba Bulan in Silaing Bawah
  224. 12:01Village, Padang Panjang City, and
  225. 12:03another in Kampung Pasir, Negeri Kajai,
  226. 12:06West Pasaman Regency, called Rumah Baca
  227. 12:09Aitayo. So, these two reading gardens,
  228. 12:13the Rimba Bulan reading space and the
  229. 12:15Aitayo reading house, have their own
  230. 12:18mentored communities, especially
  231. 12:19children. As for the Rimba Bulan
  232. 12:23reading space, their activities include
  233. 12:26inspirational discussions, short film
  234. 12:28classes, English classes, music classes
  235. 12:31, and so on. Meanwhile, at the Aitayo
  236. 12:35Reading House in Kampung Pasir, Negeri
  237. 12:37Kajai, Pasaman Regency, children's
  238. 12:39activities range from painting, drawing
  239. 12:42, storytelling, poetry reading,
  240. 12:44studying, practicing religious worship,
  241. 12:47and planting activities, given that the
  242. 12:49community there consists of farmers,
  243. 12:52among other things. The programs are
  244. 12:55strengthened for the children, so that
  245. 12:57after school, the children in Kampung
  246. 13:00Pasir, Negeri Kajai, can engage in
  247. 13:02activities at the Aitayo Reading House.
  248. 13:05Hopefully, these two reading gardens
  249. 13:07will continue to grow because they are
  250. 13:09managed by resilient volunteers. They
  251. 13:13are unpaid, yet they are always
  252. 13:15thinking about how to develop these
  253. 13:17reading gardens. And I act as their
  254. 13:24advisor, so that one day these two
  255. 13:26reading gardens can collaborate with
  256. 13:28other reading gardens or government
  257. 13:30agencies and the like, to work together
  258. 13:32in promoting literacy in the community,
  259. 13:34especially in the areas around the
  260. 13:36reading gardens. Congratulations to
  261. 13:42those of you who are planning to
  262. 13:44establish a reading garden. Do not
  263. 13:47hesitate, do not be confused. The first
  264. 13:50thing you need to do is just go ahead
  265. 13:52and run the reading garden. Start by
  266. 13:56providing a space, find books either by
  267. 13:58buying them or opening donations, and
  268. 14:00so on, so that there are books in the
  269. 14:02reading garden that can be read by the
  270. 14:04children we mentor. Then, for the
  271. 14:07program, at least once a month or once
  272. 14:09a week, there should be one or two
  273. 14:11activities that can be held at the
  274. 14:13reading garden. And don't forget to
  275. 14:16invite friends, other colleagues, or
  276. 14:18anyone in government institutions to
  277. 14:20come and visit, starting from the
  278. 14:21neighborhood head, perhaps the village
  279. 14:23head, or the sub-district head who
  280. 14:25wants to see the activities there, and
  281. 14:27who knows, maybe later you can
  282. 14:29collaborate with those institutions.
  283. 14:33Keep up the spirit, friends, to stay on
  284. 14:36the path of literacy service. That is
  285. 14:41all for my video for now; please look
  286. 14:43forward to other videos coming soon. I
  287. 14:46hope it is useful. Don't forget to like
  288. 14:48, comment, and share. See you in more
  289. 14:51exciting conversations next time.
  290. 14:54Please accept my apologies. Peace be
  291. 14:56upon you, and Allah's mercy and
  292. 14:58blessings. Yeah.
