- 9:03Krishna. So thank you so much everyone
- 9:05for coming
- 9:07this morning. We're reading from Shrimat
- 9:09Bhagwatam.
- 9:11And before reading from Shrimat
- 9:12Bhagatam, it may just be good to take
- 9:15some moments to reflect on why Shilap
- 9:18Praad brought the Shrimat Bhagwatam to
- 9:22us.
- 9:24When Shilap Praad was leaving India, one
- 9:27person said to him, "Oh, Swami G, I
- 9:29heard you're going to America."
- 9:33He said, "No, no, the Bhagwatam is going
- 9:36to America. I'm simply holding it. So
- 9:40it's very interesting that Shilapraad he
- 9:43wanted to bring Shrimat Bhagwatam to the
- 9:45west.
- 9:47Someone asked him why bring Shrimat
- 9:49Bhagwatam it's a little complicated.
- 9:52It's a little difficult to understand.
- 9:54Maybe you can bring something a little
- 9:56more easier for people to digest.
- 10:00But no, Shilap Praad specifically wanted
- 10:03to bring Shrimmed Bhagwatam.
- 10:07In fact, he didn't want to leave for
- 10:08America until he had completed the
- 10:11translation of the first kanto of the
- 10:13Bhagwatam.
- 10:15So it's very important for us to
- 10:18understand why is the Shrimat Bhagwatam
- 10:20such a special literature.
- 10:25Now the Bhagwatam itself declares
- 10:43If you want to know what is the the
- 10:46essence of
- 10:48all
- 10:52it can be contained and understood and
- 10:55grasped by reading Bhagwatamita
- 11:00one once once one is tasted
- 11:04Bhagwatamatra
- 11:08Their attraction will never go in any
- 11:12other place. In other words, Shrimat
- 11:14Bhagwatam contains the essence and it
- 11:17fully satisfies the heart such that if
- 11:20one actually understands how to relish
- 11:23Shrimat Bhagwatam then uh they will not
- 11:26look in any other place because they
- 11:29will be fully content.
- 11:32[snorts]
- 11:33Now Shrimat Bhagwatam
- 11:35uh Jiva Gow Swami who is the one who
- 11:39systemized all the philosophy of Sri
- 11:42Chaitananya Maha Prabu. He is one of the
- 11:45most prolific authors in the history of
- 11:49the universe.
- 11:52In fact it said there's only one
- 11:54personality in the universe
- 11:57who wrote more verses than Ja Gowami.
- 12:01Want to have a guess?
- 12:05That's pretty amazing. The only
- 12:08personality in the history of the
- 12:10universe who wrote more verses than Jiva
- 12:14Gow Swami is Vyasadev himself. The
- 12:17compiler of the Vic literature'ses. So
- 12:20Jivow Swami was a prolific author. It
- 12:22said that he wrote over 400,000 verses.
- 12:28Just think about that for a second.
- 12:29reading 18,000 verses of the Bhagwat and
- 12:33reading it in itself is a task.
- 12:38Now think about writing 400,000 verses.
- 12:43That's what Jiva Gowami did. It's okay.
- 12:46That's what Jiva Gow Swami did. And what
- 12:48Jiva Goswami does is in a book called
- 12:52Sundarbas. Sunda literally means
- 12:58like many of you I think in Hindi or
- 13:00Gujarati sand means
- 13:04to weave together no weaving
- 13:07like jar sand isn't it he was put
- 13:11together by the demon jara [snorts] so
- 13:14sarba literally means to weave
- 13:17so jivow swami writes a book uh or
- 13:21multiple books the sarbas And what they
- 13:24do is basically they weave together all
- 13:27the verses the most important
- 13:29conclusions and sedanta contained within
- 13:32vic literature'ses and jivosami there
- 13:36presents the essence. Um and in the very
- 13:40very first book of the sundharbas
- 13:43called tma sandba what jivow swami does
- 13:46is he establishes why shrimat bhagwatam
- 13:50is the highest book in creation.
- 13:54So it's useful to understand what jiva
- 13:57gow swami how he establishes shrimmed
- 13:59bhagatam as the ultimate book because
- 14:03this can also be very very useful in
- 14:05your preaching.
- 14:07So jiva go swami even in modernday
- 14:10philosophy they say there's four strands
- 14:13of philosophy and perhaps the most
- 14:16important strand of philosophy is known
- 14:18as epistemology. Have you heard of this?
- 14:22Epistemology means how do you know what
- 14:26you know?
- 14:28In other words, even before thinking of
- 14:31what the knowledge is, first you have to
- 14:34establish how do you find that
- 14:36knowledge.
- 14:38This is the first step to being becoming
- 14:40knowledgeable. First you have to
- 14:42understand how do you find knowledge. So
- 14:46what Jiva Goswami does in Tatva Dharba
- 14:49is he explains how you can discover
- 14:53data. Data means
- 14:56>> truth
- 14:58but duta means a very special kind of
- 15:01truth.
- 15:02Duta means a truth which stands true in
- 15:06all times, places and circumstances.
- 15:11Duta can never change. Duta can never be
- 15:15proved to be wrong. Duta never needs to
- 15:18be upgraded or refined. Duta stands true
- 15:23in all times, places and circumstances.
- 15:27So in Tatva Sandara, Jiva Gowami asked
- 15:30the question, how do you discover what
- 15:33is tutba? What is true?
- 15:36So his strategy is very very
- 15:38interesting. The first point he makes is
- 15:41this. He says there are three ways broad
- 15:44ways of understanding something in this
- 15:47world. Number one prataka
- 15:57>> slip.
- 16:05Okay.
- 16:10So the first way to understand something
- 16:13is pratyaka. You understand it by your
- 16:16direct sense perception.
- 16:19We have eyes, we have ears, we have um a
- 16:23nose, we have different knowledge
- 16:25acquiring senses. So therefore the first
- 16:29step or the first way to understand
- 16:31something is through your own senses.
- 16:35And then Jiva Gow Swami says another way
- 16:37to understand something is through
- 16:40anuman your logic your mind. If a equals
- 16:44b and b equals c then through our mind
- 16:48even though we may not have seen it we
- 16:50can conclude a equals c because that
- 16:54logically makes sense. So he says anumu
- 16:57man means the mind and anu means to
- 17:00follow. So the word for logic in
- 17:03Sanskrit is literally anuman to follow
- 17:06the mind.
- 17:09And then he says the third way to
- 17:10understand something is shabda.
- 17:13You understand it by hearing from
- 17:16someone who has more knowledge than
- 17:18yourself.
- 17:20So he said broadly speaking there are
- 17:22these three ways of understanding
- 17:24reality. And what he does through a
- 17:27series of arguments is he makes the
- 17:30point that if you try to understand
- 17:32reality through pratyaka and anuman
- 17:37ultimately you will not come to the
- 17:39highest conclusion. Why? Because the
- 17:42basic point is that your senses and your
- 17:45mind are limited.
- 17:48Right now, we can't even see what's
- 17:50going on beyond this wall
- 17:53because our senses are limited. And our
- 17:56mind is also limited because our mind
- 18:01and everything our mind uses to
- 18:03logically come up with something is
- 18:05based on what our senses discovered in
- 18:08the past.
- 18:10And so he says if you really want to
- 18:12understand something in the deepest way
- 18:15you have to hear it from someone
- 18:19who has a higher perception.
- 18:22And then the second point he makes is
- 18:24that okay if we're saying that the way
- 18:26you understand knowledge is through
- 18:28shabda
- 18:30then who should you hear from?
- 18:33And he said the next problem or the next
- 18:35uh thing that you have to overcome is
- 18:38you have to find a spiritual source from
- 18:41which to hear. Because if you hear from
- 18:44another material source,
- 18:47then even though you're not using your
- 18:50mind and senses, you're using the mind
- 18:52and senses of another limited person.
- 18:56Every single human being, he says, has
- 18:58four defects.
- 19:01Imperfect senses, illusion, cheating,
- 19:05and mistakes.
- 19:07And so he says the second point, first
- 19:10point you have to hear from someone
- 19:12else. Second point, you should hear from
- 19:15an authority or a source which is a
- 19:21means nonhuman,
- 19:24non-limited, a spiritual authority.
- 19:30Then the third point he makes is okay,
- 19:32we have to hear point number one. Point
- 19:36number two, we have to hear from a
- 19:38spiritual source. But now there are so
- 19:41many spiritual bodies of knowledge
- 19:43around the world, so many religions.
- 19:46So how do you choose which religion?
- 19:50So the Vic teachers explain that every
- 19:53religion can give you some spiritual
- 19:56elevation but all religions are not the
- 19:59same. All spiritual sources of knowledge
- 20:02are not the same. There are certain
- 20:05objective measures which can tell you
- 20:08which is the most advanced theology in
- 20:11the world.
- 20:13I'll give you a few of the points. How
- 20:15do you know if someone asks you how do
- 20:17you know which religion is the highest?
- 20:20There has to be certain objective
- 20:22measures. So the first objective measure
- 20:25is detail of philosophy.
- 20:30How much detail is there in this
- 20:32theology that can answer all of the
- 20:35questions that anyone could conceivably
- 20:38come up with? The most detailed theology
- 20:42is the most advanced theology.
- 20:45Another one, intimacy.
- 20:48Which theology explains God in the most
- 20:52intimate and in the most confidential
- 20:55way? That theology must be the most
- 20:59advanced theology.
- 21:01Number three, which theology creates the
- 21:05most transformation in the practitioner?
- 21:09The theology which actually transforms
- 21:12the heart of practitioners in a profound
- 21:15way, that theology must be the highest
- 21:17theology.
- 21:19Number four, accessibility.
- 21:22Which theology can be practiced by
- 21:25anyone from any uh level of
- 21:28consciousness?
- 21:29That theology must be the most advanced
- 21:32because the most advanced theology
- 21:35allows for anyone and everyone to
- 21:38participate.
- 21:40Number five, the most advanced theology
- 21:43in the world must be the most beautiful
- 21:46theology. It must have the best poetry.
- 21:49It must have the best descriptions. It
- 21:51must have the best artistic and cultural
- 21:54expression.
- 21:57So now if you look at all the religions
- 22:00in the world and on these five factors
- 22:05you begin to mark each theology
- 22:09on objective measure on objective
- 22:13analysis
- 22:15you will find that there's no theology
- 22:18in the world which is more advanced than
- 22:20the Vic theology because on every single
- 22:24one of these points
- 22:26No theology can trump or be higher than
- 22:30the vic revelation.
- 22:33So therefore jiva go swami says third
- 22:36point yes you have to go to a spiritual
- 22:39source and there are many sources but
- 22:41the source you should go to is the vas
- 22:45because there cannot be more advanced
- 22:48revelation than that.
- 22:50But then the fourth point he makes is
- 22:52that but there's so many books in the
- 22:54vades.
- 22:56So which book shall I go to because so
- 22:59many books are there. So he says yes
- 23:02there are the four vades there are
- 23:04brahmanas there areas there are
- 23:06opanishads there are so many auxiliary
- 23:10literatures.
- 23:12So he analyzes all the different books
- 23:15in the vadas and he says there are a
- 23:19certain set of books in the vades that
- 23:21if you go to these books then you will
- 23:25get the ultimate conclusion of
- 23:27everything.
- 23:29And through a variety of scriptural
- 23:31references he establishes that if you
- 23:34want to understand the essence of the
- 23:36vades then you have to go to the
- 23:40piranhas.
- 23:42He says puranas is purana is connected
- 23:45to the word pa and pa means perfect. So
- 23:49the piranhas are those books which
- 23:52establish and which present the perfect
- 23:56conclusion of what the vades are trying
- 23:58to teach you.
- 24:01He says okay but there are 18 puranas
- 24:05so which puranas should we go to because
- 24:07there's 18 of them. So then he says
- 24:10there are puranas in tamas
- 24:13puranas in rajas and puranas in satwa.
- 24:17There are piranhas which are in the
- 24:19ignorance in the passion and the
- 24:21goodness. So he says naturally if you
- 24:23want to find the highest then you should
- 24:25go to the piranhas which are in
- 24:28>> satwa goodness.
- 24:30Says but there's six of them.
- 24:33So then which should you go to? Then he
- 24:36says amongst the six puranas in satva
- 24:40there is one purana
- 24:42uh which is a purana
- 24:45and this purana has no imperfection.
- 24:48This purana has no material tinge and
- 24:51this purana throws away all uh cheating
- 24:54religion and that purana is.
- 25:01So this is the way in which jiva go
- 25:04swami establishes why this book is the
- 25:08conclusion of everything. Point number
- 25:10one there are three ways of acquiring
- 25:13knowledge but you have to learn by
- 25:15hearing.
- 25:16Point number two don't hear from a
- 25:19material source hear from a spiritual
- 25:22source. But point number three, there
- 25:24are many spiritual sources. But yes,
- 25:27amongst them, the vadic revelation is
- 25:29the highest on objective measure. Okay.
- 25:33But there are so many books in the
- 25:34vades. Yes. If you want to understand
- 25:37the essence of the vades, go to the
- 25:40>> puranas. But there are 18 puranas. Yes.
- 25:43But they're divided in three. Therefore,
- 25:45go to the puranas which are in the mode
- 25:47of
- 25:48>> satwa. And amongst those in the satwa
- 25:51there is one purana which is amala that
- 25:54is the bhavatam. And in this way he
- 25:58establishes
- 26:01that if you want to know anything
- 26:05then the place to go is bhagatam.
- 26:08Now this is very very powerful
- 26:11like now we're going to go out on book
- 26:13distribution and we're trying to share
- 26:15Krishna consciousness broadly in the
- 26:18world. You'll speak to three different
- 26:20types of people. One type of person will
- 26:23be like, why do I even need to read
- 26:25spiritual books?
- 26:29Another broad type of person will be,
- 26:32yeah, I'm a spiritual searcher, but why
- 26:34do I need to read Indian religion? I can
- 26:37read Christian, I can read Muslim, I can
- 26:39read other.
- 26:42And the third type of person is you'll
- 26:44meet the person who says, "I know
- 26:46everything.
- 26:49because I grew up in the Hindu religion.
- 26:51But why only Bhagavatam? We can read
- 26:53Shiv Purana, we can read that Purana, we
- 26:55can read Agni Purana.
- 26:58So broadly speaking in your preaching,
- 27:00you meet three type of people. An
- 27:03atheist, a spiritual searcher and
- 27:06someone already within the Vadic
- 27:10kind of world.
- 27:13Jiva Gowami establishes how to establish
- 27:16to each one of these people why they
- 27:19should read Bhagawatam.
- 27:21To an atheistic person, you can explain
- 27:24the reason you need to read this book is
- 27:26because your senses and mind are
- 27:28limited. And on that line of argument,
- 27:30you can defeat them. To a spiritual
- 27:33searcher who says why the Indian
- 27:34religion? I can go to any religion on
- 27:37the basis of Jiva Gowami. who can
- 27:39explain this is the highest revelation.
- 27:42You're not going to find any theology
- 27:44which is advanced as this. And to the
- 27:47person who's already looking into
- 27:49different vic scriptures, you can
- 27:52establish on the basis of Jivow Swami's
- 27:55explanation that yes, you're reading so
- 27:57many books in the Vedas, but if you want
- 27:59to understand the essence, you're going
- 28:01to find it here. Who compiled all of the
- 28:04Vedas?
- 28:06Vavyas. When Vavas wanted to summarize
- 28:10all of the Vades into codes, which book
- 28:13did he write?
- 28:15>> Vanta Sutra.
- 28:17And when he wanted to write a commentary
- 28:19on Vanta Sutra, which is the essence of
- 28:22the Vades, which book did he write?
- 28:24>> Chim Bhagat. So, who can know the
- 28:27essence of the Vades better than the
- 28:30person who compiled the thing in the
- 28:32first place?
- 28:34Therefore, jiva go swami says if you
- 28:36want to understand the vades you have to
- 28:38read bhagavatam.
- 28:41So this is why praad brought the
- 28:44bhavatam to America
- 28:47because on the basis of bhavatam you can
- 28:50convince anyone
- 28:53uh
- 28:54why they need to go on this path.
- 29:00So um I thought just to give this little
- 29:03bit of introduction. Does anyone have
- 29:06any questions on this?
- 29:21Which
- 29:23so first one is detail
- 29:26which has the most philosophical detail.
- 29:30Second one is intimacy.
- 29:32Which one describes the inner life of
- 29:35God? The inner mind of God. Which one
- 29:38describes how God exchanges love with
- 29:41his devotees?
- 29:43Which one explains what God is thinking?
- 29:46Why God does what he does?
- 29:49uh this is intimacy.
- 29:52Third one I think I said was
- 29:56>> transformation. Which one creates a
- 29:58transformation?
- 30:00If a theology doesn't transform,
- 30:03therefore even when Rupag Swami is
- 30:05explaining devotional service, what does
- 30:07he say?
- 30:18The very he says
- 30:22by practicing devotional service
- 30:26all auspiciousness will come.
- 30:29Apiciousness will come in your life.
- 30:31Apiciousness will come in those who are
- 30:33around you. Apiciousness will come in
- 30:36the world because it transforms.
- 30:40Fourth one is accessibility.
- 30:43The most that you see like Einstein he
- 30:47said if you can't explain it simply
- 30:51enough
- 30:52you don't know it well enough.
- 30:55The best teacher can teach the most
- 30:59advanced thing to even someone who has
- 31:02very little qualification because the
- 31:05deeper you know something the more
- 31:07simply you can understand it to anyone
- 31:10and everyone. Therefore, the Bhagwatam
- 31:12is simultaneously the highest philosophy
- 31:17and simultaneously made accessible to
- 31:20even
- 31:21someone who may not have so much
- 31:23qualification
- 31:28like that. So, accessibility and then
- 31:31the fifth one I gave was um beauty.
- 31:35Beauty.
- 31:38So, another time I'll show you
- 31:41how beautiful
- 31:44uh
- 31:46this theology is. Have you ever heard of
- 31:48Chitra Kavitwani?
- 31:53Okay, maybe I'll show you this tomorrow
- 31:55morning.
- 31:58I'll show you the beauty of Rupag
- 32:01Swami's poetry. It will blow your mind.
- 32:06I'll show you tomorrow because you need
- 32:08to see if there's a projector. I can
- 32:10show you.
- 32:13>> So this beauty, the beauty of the
- 32:16language, the beauty of the culture, the
- 32:18beauty of the art,
- 32:21um the Vic, there's no beauty like this.
- 32:26So this is why when we go out and we say
- 32:29this is the highest, this is the
- 32:30highest. It's not just some fanatical
- 32:32statement.
- 32:34On objective measure you can establish
- 32:37that Krishna consciousness is the most
- 32:39advanced theology.
- 32:41Bacta Swami once he went on national
- 32:44television and he said if anyone can
- 32:47show me a more evolved theology than
- 32:50what I'm practicing I'll convert to your
- 32:52religion right now.
- 32:56But you have to show on objective
- 32:58measure
- 33:00that it's more advanced.
- 33:04Okay.
- 33:12So recently
- 33:17people
- 33:19say
- 33:26history.
- 33:30So how can I
- 33:41So sometimes people say there
- 33:44that which is heard that which is
- 33:47directly emanating in the ether from the
- 33:50mouth of the supreme personality of
- 33:52godhead and which is then passed down by
- 33:54sages through oral reception.
- 33:57And then there is shmmiti that which is
- 34:00remembered by the sages that which is
- 34:02then documented in histories like the
- 34:04itas the puranas like that.
- 34:08So sometimes people make the argument
- 34:10that um
- 34:13is somehow more authoritative thani
- 34:16because this is just some stories. This
- 34:18is just some uh something that is uh
- 34:22written down by the sages.
- 34:26The first thing to understand is that
- 34:29these sages who are writing these things
- 34:32down, they are in uh contact with the
- 34:35supreme lord.
- 34:37Rishi, the word rishi comes from the
- 34:41Sanskrit word disha. Disha literally
- 34:45means one who is seeing.
- 34:50So therefore rishi like for example it's
- 34:53explained that when vasadev compiles
- 34:56shrimmed bhagwatam then the language in
- 34:59which he's compiling it is sanskrit but
- 35:02in another sense it's what we call
- 35:04samadi pashia
- 35:07the language of trance
- 35:10in other words uh the sages they are
- 35:13completely connected to the absolute
- 35:16truth and therefore when they right
- 35:20is non- different.
- 35:23Therefore, when for example when we uh
- 35:26talk about the 10 offenses to the holy
- 35:28name and we say to blaspheme the vadic
- 35:32literatures or literatures in pursuance
- 35:35of the vadic version because the idea is
- 35:38that which is compiled by those who are
- 35:41pure is nondiffer than the supreme lord
- 35:45himself
- 35:47and therefore jivow swami also
- 35:49establishes he says
- 35:56that the puranas
- 35:58the upanishads themselves the chandoga
- 36:01upanishad itself says that the piranhas
- 36:05are the fifth va
- 36:07so uh even the vadas itself even the
- 36:12shruti itself
- 36:14says that the shmmiti or the histories
- 36:17are actually vadic and they're actually
- 36:20uh pramman their authority.
- 36:24So that's why jiva go swami in tvasa
- 36:27he's explaining this that and in one
- 36:30sense we say for example that this is
- 36:32not the words of the supreme person
- 36:36but the bhagat gita is krishna's
- 36:38wordshavan
- 36:44so although it's contained within the
- 36:46mahabharat
- 36:50it's still the direct words of the
- 36:52supreme lord which are documented by the
- 36:56so in that sense uh the itas or thei or
- 37:00the puranas are not any less
- 37:05than
- 37:07[clears throat]
- 37:09any other questions on this
- 37:17happy
- 37:19okay
- 37:22how we What time?
- 37:28>> What time we going to?
- 37:29>> 8.
- 37:30>> We go to 8. Okay. So, should I read a
- 37:32verse?
- 37:37>> Okay. Let's just read any verse until we
- 37:40say stop.
- 37:46[cough]
- 37:46[clears throat]
- 37:49>> Okay. So we're reading from canto number
- 37:51one chapter number nine entitled the
- 37:54passing away of Bishma.
- 37:58Today we're reading from text number 46.
- 38:02So just to give you a background to this
- 38:04uh Shrimat Bhagwatam continues where the
- 38:07Mahabharat ends.
- 38:09So therefore the first kanto of the
- 38:12Bhagwatam explains everything that
- 38:15happened when the Kurukhetra war ended.
- 38:19Therefore, if you look at the final
- 38:21chapters of the Mahabharat and you look
- 38:23at the structure of the first kanto, you
- 38:26will actually see that they mirror each
- 38:28other.
- 38:30So what happens at the end of the
- 38:33Kurukhetra? Many many things happen but
- 38:35one of the things that happens is that
- 38:37Udistia is overwhelmed with grief
- 38:41because he has seen so many people uh
- 38:44annihilated
- 38:46his cousins uh so many people have died
- 38:49on the battlefield
- 38:52and therefore he feels guilty. He feels
- 38:56that because uh he was to be made king,
- 38:59he was to be made emperor that so much
- 39:02suffering had to take place. And
- 39:05therefore being bewildered, he decides
- 39:08to go to see Bishma.
- 39:12Bishma is on the bed of arrows. Bishma
- 39:16has the city that he can choose the time
- 39:19of his death.
- 39:22It is said that uh in the Bhagwatam that
- 39:25Bishma is waiting for utarayana.
- 39:29Utarayana means the rising sun. When the
- 39:31sun is at a certain point then he is
- 39:35waiting for that moment and then he will
- 39:37leave. But Vishnak
- 39:40says doesn't mean the rising sun. It
- 39:44doesn't mean that the sun is in a
- 39:45certain point. There is a person uty
- 39:52there is a personality who appeared in
- 39:54the womb of uterikshit.
- 39:58Who is that?
- 40:00>> Krishna.
- 40:01So Bishma is not waiting for utayana.
- 40:06He is waiting for utarayana.
- 40:09>> He's not waiting for the sun to appear
- 40:11at a certain point. He's waiting for
- 40:13Krishna to appear. And when Krishna is
- 40:16in front of him once he's had dion of
- 40:19Krishna then he will decide to leave the
- 40:22world. So Udishia he is bewildered.
- 40:26Krishna knows Bishma is on the bed of
- 40:28arrows. So Krishna puts two and two
- 40:31together and he says to Udishia and the
- 40:33pandas let us go and visit Bishma.
- 40:38And there on the bed of arrows Bishma
- 40:41begins to give many many different
- 40:44instructions.
- 40:46Mahabharat is how many verses long?
- 40:51>> About 100,000.
- 40:53Did you know
- 40:55that nearly half of the Mahabharat,
- 40:59half
- 41:01is Bishma's instructions on the bed of
- 41:03arrows?
- 41:05Did you know that
- 41:08nearly half of the whole Mahabharat
- 41:12is Bishma's instructions on the bed of
- 41:15arrows because he talks about all kinds
- 41:17of dharma all kinds of so in the
- 41:19Bhagatam is very very quick. We hear
- 41:22about the some instructions that Bishma
- 41:26gives but actually in the Mahabharat is
- 41:29is a vast
- 41:31uh vast part of the Mahabharat.
- 41:34Bishmade's instructions.
- 41:36So
- 41:39um
- 41:41so here we're hearing about the passing
- 41:43away of Bishm
- 41:46text number 46
- 42:03translation.
- 42:05Oh descendant of Brigu Shaak, after
- 42:09performing funeral rituals for the dead
- 42:11body of Bishmadev,
- 42:14Marajistia was momentarily
- 42:17overtaken with grief.
- 42:21Purple
- 42:22Bishmadev was not only a great family
- 42:25head of Maharaj Judistia but also he was
- 42:29a great philosopher and friend to him
- 42:32his brothers and his mother. Since
- 42:36Maharaj Pandu the father of the five
- 42:39brothers headed by Maharaj Udistia had
- 42:42died. Bishmadev was the most
- 42:45affectionate grandfather of the pandas
- 42:48and caretaker of the widow
- 42:51daughter-in-law counti.
- 42:54[clears throat]
- 42:55Although Maharaj Darashtra
- 42:58the elder uncle of Maharajistia
- 43:01was there to look after them, his
- 43:03affection was more on the side of his
- 43:05hundred sons headed by Duryodan.
- 43:09Ultimately a colossal clique was
- 43:12fabricated to deprive the five
- 43:14fatherless brothers of the rightful
- 43:16claim of the kingdom of Hustinapur.
- 43:20There was great intrigue common in
- 43:23imperial palaces and the five brothers
- 43:26were exiled to the wilderness. But
- 43:29Bishmade was always a sincerely
- 43:32sympathetic well-wisher, grandfather,
- 43:35friend and philosopher to Maharaj
- 43:37Udistia.
- 43:39Even up to the last moment of his life,
- 43:43he died very happily by seeing Maharaj
- 43:46Udistia to the throne. Otherwise, he
- 43:50would have long ago quitted his material
- 43:52body instead of suffering agony over the
- 43:56undue sufferings of the Pandas.
- 43:59He was simply waiting for the opportune
- 44:01moment because he was sure and certain
- 44:05that the sons of Pandu would come out
- 44:07victorious in the battlefield of
- 44:09Kurukhetra
- 44:11as his lordship Sri Krishna was their
- 44:14protector.
- 44:15As a devotey of the Lord, he knew that
- 44:18the Lord's devotey cannot be vanquished
- 44:22at any time. Marajidistia was quite
- 44:25aware of all these good wishes of
- 44:28Bishmadev and therefore he must have
- 44:31been feeling the great separation.
- 44:34He was sorry for the separation of a
- 44:36great soul and not for the material body
- 44:40which Bishmadev relinquished.
- 44:43The funeral ceremony was a necessary
- 44:45duty. Although Bishmade was a liberated
- 44:48soul. Since Bishmade was without issue,
- 44:53the eldest grandson namely Marajistia
- 44:57was the rightful person to perform this
- 44:59ceremony. It was a great boon to
- 45:02Bishmadev that an equally great son of
- 45:05the family undertook the last rights of
- 45:09a great man.
- 45:15So therefore it's explained that there
- 45:18are different
- 45:20mahajms.
- 45:34There are 12 personalities who are said
- 45:37to be [clears throat] authorities in
- 45:40Vadic literature.
- 45:44Who's that?
- 45:47>> Who's Swamu?
- 45:53>> Lord Brahma
- 45:56literally means born
- 46:00from himself. Like in one sense he was
- 46:03born from the navl. So he had no
- 46:07conventional father in that way. Nada
- 46:12nar
- 46:14to give. Therefore nada one who is
- 46:18traveling around the universe always
- 46:20giving naran to others. Shambhu
- 46:25>> Shiva
- 46:27it's explained in Bhagwatam isn't it?
- 46:43Ganga of all rivers Ganga is foremost.
- 46:50Of all the gods achna is the foremost
- 46:56of all piranhas bhagata is foremost and
- 47:00navanamashu
- 47:03of all vaynavas shiva is considered
- 47:07foremost
- 47:12isn't it we say bhta
- 47:15shiroi
- 47:17bhakta what is a shiomani
- 47:22is a crest jewel. A crown jewel,
- 47:25isn't it? So this he is like the crown
- 47:28jewel. The crest jewel of devotees.
- 47:31Janak.
- 47:34Janak is mentioned in Gita. He's there's
- 47:38many many stories of how Janak was such
- 47:41advanced. He said once all the sages
- 47:44came to Janak and they were wondering we
- 47:47are all Thiagois. We're all renunciates,
- 47:50but you're always glorified. We don't
- 47:52understand. You are a king. You have so
- 47:55many duties. You have so many dharmas.
- 47:57You have so many preoccupations,
- 48:00yet you're always glorified as such an
- 48:02advanced devotey.
- 48:04How are you able to think of so many
- 48:06things at once?
- 48:09He said, "Come back at lunchtime. I'll
- 48:12give you the answer."
- 48:15So all the sages came back at lunchtime.
- 48:18And so he said please sit down take
- 48:20prashad. So they all sat down in a row.
- 48:24And as they sat down they looked above
- 48:26them and above every single seat was a
- 48:31sword
- 48:32and the sword was hanging on a thin
- 48:35piece of string.
- 48:38So now imagine you're taking prashad
- 48:40[laughter]
- 48:41and there's a sword above you hanging on
- 48:43a thin piece of string. So they looked
- 48:46at Janak. They said what's this? He said
- 48:48it's part of the decor. It's part of the
- 48:50design.
- 48:53Janak looked at them and he said, "You
- 48:55already said I'm glorified as such a
- 48:57dharmic person. So would I do anything
- 48:59to hurt you? You relax. You just take
- 49:01prashad."
- 49:03So anyway, they sat. They took prashad.
- 49:08At the end, Janak said to them, "Had
- 49:10pashad." Yes. Had pashad. Digested. Yes.
- 49:13Digested.
- 49:15What were you thinking of while taking
- 49:17pushad?
- 49:19We could only think of that thing. He
- 49:22said this is how it's possible
- 49:25to do your duties
- 49:28but at the same time have your mind
- 49:30fixed in completely something else. So
- 49:33yes, I have my kingly duties. I have so
- 49:36many things I'm doing. But my mindn
- 49:43is always fixed on Krishna. So this is
- 49:46how you can be doing one thing
- 49:49externally busy externally active but in
- 49:53your mind be completely fixed on
- 49:55something else like this jan was
- 49:57glorified
- 50:02bishma is the next great authority
- 50:12mar
- 50:14he was Uh
- 50:17he he he is the embodiment of atman
- 50:22isn't he gave everything
- 50:33great authority
- 50:37and me who is mear
- 50:41yamaraj is the one speaking this verse
- 50:45So these are all the great authorities
- 50:47on devotional service. Bishma he loved
- 50:51the pandas. Bishma was a great soul. He
- 50:54was a mahajan. There's no question of
- 50:56Bishma
- 50:58in any way, shape or form having any
- 51:01impurity.
- 51:03However,
- 51:05Leela and because of showing the world
- 51:09the complexity of dharma, he was caught
- 51:12in a situation where he was on the side
- 51:14of the core of us.
- 51:17He had to support the korovas and
- 51:19therefore he had to seemingly
- 51:22uh
- 51:24do things which seemed to be against the
- 51:27pandas not in the interest of the pandas
- 51:29but actually he was um he was always uh
- 51:34completely uh looking out for their
- 51:38well-being.
- 51:41So Bishma in his humility sometimes he
- 51:44will show his weakness but actually like
- 51:47for example when he was on the bed of
- 51:49arrows then Dropati came to him
- 51:54he was speaking all this amazing wisdom
- 51:58so Dropi looked at him and said you're
- 52:00speaking all this amazing wisdom now
- 52:04where was all this wisdom when I was
- 52:06being disroed in the gambling arena
- 52:11Where was all the good wisdom then?
- 52:15And Bishma in his humility he said I was
- 52:18living in the palace of the Koravas and
- 52:22therefore every single day I was eating
- 52:24their food
- 52:27and therefore I was contaminated
- 52:31and therefore I couldn't think straight.
- 52:34But now I'm on the bed of arrows and all
- 52:38of that blood has been drained from my
- 52:40body.
- 52:42Therefore, I have regained
- 52:44my good conscience.
- 52:49That's how Bishma explained it. Anyway,
- 52:52the
- 52:54lesson for us is
- 52:56only eat
- 53:01it has an effect.
- 53:03But like this Bishma very very humble
- 53:06but actually a great soul
- 53:09love
- 53:12and uh here you yes naturally he feels a
- 53:16lamentation when a great soul leaves the
- 53:18world um then naturally
- 53:22there is great pain a great feeling of
- 53:24loss even though we know yes the soul is
- 53:29eternal even though we know yes they've
- 53:31gone back to Christishna
- 53:34Even then it becomes very very
- 53:36difficult. So Udysphere is overtaken
- 53:40with grief momentarily
- 53:42but not so much that he forgets his duty
- 53:46like we were talking yesterday. So
- 53:48naturally when we lose a loved one there
- 53:51is grief. Udistia is feeling the grief.
- 53:54But here it says Marajistia was
- 53:57momentarily
- 53:59overcome by grief. In other words, in
- 54:02that moment, yes, there was great grief,
- 54:05but not so much that it debilitated him
- 54:08from then going on and becoming emperor
- 54:10and doing his duty. So he performed the
- 54:14final sacrifice rights for Bishma
- 54:19and then continued on with his duty and
- 54:23when the time came also left and then
- 54:27Perik
- 54:29took over. like this.
- 54:40>> Three minutes if any last questions or
- 54:43comments. Yes.
- 54:45[clears throat]
- 54:57In the presence of
- 55:00So at that moment he he regained his
- 55:03consciousness and he knew like he
- 55:05already knew obviously
- 55:08but how to understand how he gave
- 55:11instructions in front of Lord like Lord
- 55:14already gave instructions in the form of
- 55:15like he spoke of so instruction.
- 55:30When Chaitananya Mahapu travels to South
- 55:32India,
- 55:35then Chaitananya Mahapu comes to
- 55:36Godavari
- 55:39and there in Godavari he meets
- 55:40Ramanandaray
- 55:43and he says to Ramanandereay
- 55:46uh I am the sasi
- 55:48I'm the supreme lord but today you're
- 55:51going going to give the class
- 55:54and then Chaitanany Maha Prabhu asks him
- 55:56a question what is the ultimate goal of
- 55:58life.
- 56:01Ramanandaray begins speaking things and
- 56:03Mahapu says
- 56:06this is external. Say something more.
- 56:08Say something more.
- 56:11Like this Chetani Mahapu draws all of
- 56:14the philosophy out from Ramanandai.
- 56:17And later on Ramanand Ray said I am like
- 56:20a stringed instrument
- 56:23and you are like a expert musician.
- 56:27The sound seems to be coming from me.
- 56:30But actually it is your expert playing
- 56:34of me that is bringing out something
- 56:37good.
- 56:38So therefore the devote
- 56:42understands
- 56:46Krishna is here. He's the compiler of
- 56:48the Vedas. He knows everything. But
- 56:50still because Krishna has asked him,
- 56:53Krishna has come with the pandas and
- 56:56Krishna knows that the pandeas are
- 56:58bewildered. Krishna knows that the
- 57:01pandas need direction.
- 57:03Krishna knows that they need to be uh
- 57:06trained
- 57:08uh in their dharma. Therefore uh Krishna
- 57:12encourages Bishmadev and Bishmadev as a
- 57:15service then speaks to the pandas like
