- 0:00whoa oh I'm Mark I used to be a senior
- 0:03artist at Blizzard Entertainment and now
- 0:05I teach art for a living in this new
- 0:08episode of my yet to be award-winning
- 0:10series I call YouTube Art School we're
- 0:12going to significantly level up your
- 0:14color theory knowledge in just a couple
- 0:16of minutes because I know you have no
- 0:18attention span so if coloring has been a
- 0:21struggle that's about to end so let's
- 0:24get
- 0:26[Music]
- 0:28started
- 0:31all right classes in session pay
- 0:33attention also this class isn't free
- 0:36you're going to have to pay the class
- 0:37fee of either one like or one sub No
- 0:39Stealing that's better let's get started
- 0:42this class is going to be a super
- 0:44condensed and simplified version of what
- 0:46I teach in my full art program but as a
- 0:48short YouTube video I think you'll get a
- 0:50lot out of it especially if you've been
- 0:52struggling with colors first thing first
- 0:55when we talk color theory we got to get
- 0:57on the same page regarding the basics so
- 1:00let's start with the chromatic Circle
- 1:02this is the chromatic Circle and it's
- 1:04specific to the colors of light for
- 1:06digital art pigment colors have their
- 1:08own chromatic Circle and it's slightly
- 1:10different now here we have all of the
- 1:13colors of the rainbow this is what white
- 1:15light is made out of you add all of
- 1:18these together and well you get the
- 1:20color white what we see here is only a
- 1:22fraction of all the colors that were
- 1:23able to see in art because it only
- 1:26represents the Hue of the color Hue
- 1:29represents the position on the chromatic
- 1:31Circle it's a light frequency basically
- 1:34when we talk about colors we're really
- 1:35talking about the Hue but also the value
- 1:39and the saturation combined colors can
- 1:42be bright or dark saturated or not and
- 1:46of different Hues now we should also
- 1:48quickly talk about color warmth because
- 1:51there are colors that can be defined as
- 1:53warm colors and others as cool colors
- 1:56usually we'll split the chromatic Circle
- 1:58this way to roughly indicate which color
- 2:00is cool or warm but in reality any color
- 2:04can take on any of the two rolls so here
- 2:07for example red you know a typically
- 2:09very warm color what happens when
- 2:12another type of red is right next to it
- 2:15yet is not maybe as saturated and might
- 2:19have a bit of blue in it well in this
- 2:21case that red takes on the role of the
- 2:23cool color relative to the other red
- 2:25because color warmth is relative always
- 2:28remember this in independently those two
- 2:31are clearly red warm colors but relative
- 2:34to each other we don't perceive them to
- 2:36be the same warmth and why bother
- 2:38learning all of this well because color
- 2:41temperature plays a huge part in how we
- 2:43look at Art we're naturally attracted to
- 2:46warmer colors and so they tend to get
- 2:48our attention more easily as opposed to
- 2:50cool colors think of it from the
- 2:52perspective of our jeans and evolution
- 2:55way back in the days when we were living
- 2:56in caves and our most advanced
- 2:58technology was fire a warm color like
- 3:02yellow and you know red like fire that
- 3:04meant life where were we most
- 3:06comfortable well right next to a warm
- 3:08fire in the middle of a cold night and
- 3:11well today as artists you know we can
- 3:13use that fact to guide the attention to
- 3:15a particular part of a painting because
- 3:18warm colors tend to attract attention
- 3:21while cool colors tend to recede in the
- 3:23background and of course all of this is
- 3:25going pretty fast but if you're
- 3:27fascinated by colors like I am we go
- 3:29into to it a lot more in depth in my art
- 3:31program you can learn about with the
- 3:33link in the video description the
- 3:34program contains among many others two
- 3:37extensive classes on color and light
- 3:39Theory and they're some of my favorites
- 3:40the art school program is currently on
- 3:42sale for the holidays you'll be able to
- 3:44get it at a huge discount until the end
- 3:46of the month but the price goes up next
- 3:48month so right now is the cheapest it'll
- 3:50ever be don't miss out join our awesome
- 3:53community of over 19,000 students you'll
- 3:55be glad you did what are you waiting for
- 3:58all right now that we have the base
- 3:59basics down we have a drawing here how
- 4:02the heck do we choose the right colors
- 4:04for it let me show you a few color
- 4:06recipes that you can try right now or as
- 4:09they could also be referred to color
- 4:11harmonies those are basically guidelines
- 4:13to select a few colors that will ensure
- 4:16they work together harmoniously it's
- 4:19very easy to select a team of colors
- 4:21that don't work well together it's too
- 4:23easy a color harmony though is a way to
- 4:26pick a great team all the time or in
- 4:29this case pick a good color palette all
- 4:31the time there are many color harmonies
- 4:34many more that I'll show today but we'll
- 4:36look at a few of my favorite ones that
- 4:38also happen to be pretty easy to use now
- 4:41the first and simplest color Harmony is
- 4:44called monochromatic color Harmony and
- 4:46it's exactly what it sounds like it's a
- 4:48color palette made up of all the same
- 4:50Hue but not necessarily the same value
- 4:53or saturation and just in general too
- 4:55don't stress out too much if you're not
- 4:56following like 100% of the recipe just
- 4:59like your real like cooking recipe
- 5:01you're always free to add some extra
- 5:03spices or whatever adjust it based on
- 5:05your preferences anyways a monochromatic
- 5:06color palette might look something like
- 5:09this it all looks basically the same
- 5:10color except I did make some choices
- 5:13here to adjust the saturation and values
- 5:16to create more contrast around my focal
- 5:18point aka the face of the character and
- 5:20the focal point by the way being simply
- 5:22what the artist wants the audience to
- 5:24notice first right by introducing colors
- 5:27with darker and brighter values around
- 5:29this area and by adding more saturation
- 5:31to my colors most people will tend to
- 5:33look here first and then notice the rest
- 5:36after because the rest has much less
- 5:38contrast in value and saturation
- 5:40contrast is exciting no contrast not
- 5:43exciting and this will be the focus with
- 5:45the other color harmonies to always try
- 5:47to arrange the more visually exciting
- 5:49colors in your color palette around your
- 5:51focal point again it's not just about
- 5:53the colors that you choose it's how you
- 5:55use them moving on to the second color
- 5:57Harmony then one you might might have
- 6:00never heard of before a diet Harmony not
- 6:03a diet or not a dad Harmony a diad this
- 6:07one will be a combination of two colors
- 6:09that are separated by one color on the
- 6:11color wheel these two colors for example
- 6:14now since we have more than one color
- 6:16just like having more than one character
- 6:18in a drawing or in a movie a hierarchy
- 6:21sets in some colors just like characters
- 6:24are more dominant than others and as a
- 6:26result attract more attention like we
- 6:28saw with the monoch itic Harmony we can
- 6:30adjust the saturation and the values of
- 6:32our colors depending if we want them to
- 6:34pop or to be more discreet now I'm
- 6:37choosing here to go with red as the lead
- 6:39color for my red and orange color
- 6:41palette since it's naturally a slightly
- 6:44warmer color than orange and hopefully
- 6:46we remember that warmer colors attract
- 6:49more attention AKA they make great lead
- 6:51colors and then I'm going to take that
- 6:53orange and desaturate it to cool it down
- 6:55and make it more discrete from here if I
- 6:58were to use this color palette to color
- 6:59color something I'd used the vibrant red
- 7:01around my focal point since it's now the
- 7:03lead color the lead color will often be
- 7:06brighter more saturated and warm in
- 7:08temperature and the same lead color will
- 7:10be the one that I feature most around my
- 7:12focal point if I did the opposite and
- 7:14made the colors away from my focal point
- 7:16stand out more it'll more likely than
- 7:19not create a very weird vibe when we
- 7:21look at this like we're being
- 7:23misdirected kind of I keep wanting to
- 7:26look over here because that's where the
- 7:27colors have the most contrast but
- 7:29there's nothing worth looking at there
- 7:32there's a lot of psychology involved in
- 7:34color theory which is a big part of why
- 7:36it's so fascinating to me now the third
- 7:40Harmony is the complimentary color
- 7:42Harmony this is one of my favorite
- 7:44because it's the most contrast we'll
- 7:46ever have in a color Harmony this one
- 7:47might be more familiar but we'll go
- 7:49ahead and select two colors directly
- 7:51opposite on the chromatic Circle we just
- 7:53discussed ways to come up with a lead
- 7:55color and a secondary color so this will
- 7:57apply here as well but another thing
- 7:59thing we can do too is play with the
- 8:01amount of each color not just the
- 8:03contrast between them whatever color I
- 8:05end up choosing as the lead color I like
- 8:07to keep it in the shorter Supply on the
- 8:09drawing to create a sense of Rarity
- 8:12Rarity or scarcity is eye-catching it's
- 8:15science and that's going to be the end
- 8:16of this week's class now go out there
- 8:19and color some stuff do it hope this was
- 8:21helpful and you know what to do if it
- 8:23was tell your friends tell your dog yell
- 8:25about it to your neighbors in the middle
- 8:27of the night they should all subscribe
- 8:28and learn art with also since you've
- 8:30been a good student you get free bees
- 8:33one of my two custom brush packs is
- 8:34available for download with the link in
- 8:36the video description and it's free and
- 8:38there you'll also find a link to some
- 8:39exercise files with a bunch of drawings
- 8:41you can practice coloring with if that
- 8:43helps and also don't forget I have a
- 8:45huge discount on my art program until
- 8:47the
- 8:48[Music]
- 8:58end
