  1. 0:00hey everybody welcome to this b2 English
  2. 0:02listening practice video you can use
  3. 0:04this video to train your listening and
  4. 0:06comprehension as I speak you ready so
  5. 0:09today I'm gonna talk to you about living
  6. 0:11abroad I was an expat for a few years so
  7. 0:14I can offer a pretty good amount of
  8. 0:15insight into this topic let's start
  9. 0:17first with the good things living abroad
  10. 0:19opens up a whole world of new
  11. 0:21experiences ideas and cultures that you
  12. 0:24never would have dreamed of if you
  13. 0:25hadn't moved abroad the second you step
  14. 0:27off the plane and realize that you're
  15. 0:29not just on vacation you're in your new
  16. 0:31home it can hit you like a truck
  17. 0:33regardless of how much planning you've
  18. 0:35done and regardless of how much desire
  19. 0:37you have to live in that new country the
  20. 0:39reality of it all will strike fear in
  21. 0:41you but this fear is actually a good
  22. 0:43fear it's like an exciting fear you've
  23. 0:45probably heard the expression to have
  24. 0:47butterflies in your stomach well the
  25. 0:50experience of arriving in your new
  26. 0:51country and knowing that you're gonna
  27. 0:53set up your life there will definitely
  28. 0:55give you a serious case of the
  29. 0:56butterflies it's more like giant moths
  30. 0:58but like I said I consider that a
  31. 1:01positive another good thing is that
  32. 1:03hopefully you'll get to learn a new
  33. 1:04language ideally you'd already have a
  34. 1:07decent level in the country's language
  35. 1:08and so being in that country and
  36. 1:11surrounded by native speakers would be a
  37. 1:12great way to improve but as you can
  38. 1:15probably imagine not everyone gets the
  39. 1:17same pleasure out of speaking a foreign
  40. 1:18language as I do or other language
  41. 1:20learners do so this might be a negative
  42. 1:22for some people and I personally know
  43. 1:25people that have been living in a
  44. 1:26foreign country for four five six years
  45. 1:29and they can barely put a sentence
  46. 1:30together so my advice to those moving
  47. 1:33abroad would be to study the language as
  48. 1:34much as possible before you go because
  49. 1:37if you arrive in your new country
  50. 1:38without knowing any of the language
  51. 1:40you're not just gonna pick it up it
  52. 1:43doesn't work like that all the talking
  53. 1:45you hear around you is just gonna be
  54. 1:46like static noise in the background it
  55. 1:49won't make any sense to you and it won't
  56. 1:50help you learn you need to study and get
  57. 1:53to the level where you can actually
  58. 1:54understand the message of what people
  59. 1:56are saying and then you can go out into
  60. 1:58the real world and pick it up and then
  61. 2:00you can have fun speaking that language
  62. 2:02in your new country all right so the
  63. 2:04biggest negative about living abroad is
  64. 2:06obviously being far away from your loved
  65. 2:08ones this one's a no-brainer it's not
  66. 2:10easy to live far from your family
  67. 2:12friends it's one thing to move across
  68. 2:14the country but moving to a completely
  69. 2:16different country is a whole nother
  70. 2:17level of difficulty mainly because it's
  71. 2:20harder to visit each other I know it's
  72. 2:22not the same as being with them in
  73. 2:23person but it does help to video chat or
  74. 2:26even just call your family what do you
  75. 2:28think about it it's not that different
  76. 2:29than talking to them face-to-face except
  77. 2:31for the fact that you can't touch them
  78. 2:33see yeah that's the hardest part for
  79. 2:35sure and the other negative thing is
  80. 2:37that there are always gonna be certain
  81. 2:38things about the new country or culture
  82. 2:40that you don't like in my experience I
  83. 2:43was able to adapt to my new country
  84. 2:44pretty well but there were some things
  85. 2:46that I just couldn't get used to things
  86. 2:48like the low-quality infrastructure the
  87. 2:50lack of punctuality and some other minor
  88. 2:52things you should definitely try to
  89. 2:54adapt as much as possible on your new
  90. 2:56country but there will be some things
  91. 2:58that are just too different or that are
  92. 3:00contrary to your personality
  93. 3:02that's the reality of living abroad ok
  94. 3:04so that's all for today leave a comment
  95. 3:07and let me know if you ever lived abroad
  96. 3:08before or if you'd like to live abroad
  97. 3:10I'll see you next video
  98. 3:14[Music]
  99. 3:22[Applause]
  100. 3:24[Music]
