  1. 0:00We've got Ayaan Hirsi Ali with the
  2. 0:02Hoover Institution. Let's take a look.
  3. 0:04>> Soviet communism lasted seven decades.
  4. 0:07>> Yeah.
  5. 0:08>> Islam has been with us for 14 centuries.
  6. 0:11Are you optimistic?
  7. 0:13>> I am optimistic because we have defeated
  8. 0:18in the past
  9. 0:19um these ideologies you mentioned uh
  10. 0:22communism and
  11. 0:24uh national socialism
  12. 0:27that were in some ways
  13. 0:29um more determined, modern, fighting
  14. 0:32with modern tools.
  15. 0:34And Islam has been around for a very
  16. 0:35long time, but the jihad is the
  17. 0:38political uh Islam of our day
  18. 0:42buys weapons from us, takes innovation
  19. 0:44from us, needs us to destroy us.
  20. 0:48And so in some ways I think we should be
  21. 0:50more optimistic because A, we've done it
  22. 0:53before.
  23. 0:54>> They can't destroy us without our
  24. 0:56permission.
  25. 0:57>> They can't destroy us without our
  26. 0:58permission. They can't destroy us
  27. 0:59without us letting them destroy us.
  28. 1:03And even if you just put the two ideas
  29. 1:05side by side, one thing
  30. 1:07I I was talking to Andy McCarthy, the
  31. 1:09former prosecutor.
  32. 1:10>> Yes.
  33. 1:11>> And he was uh from you know, as a
  34. 1:13prosecutor, he's really tried to fight
  35. 1:15this fight
  36. 1:16within the justice system. And he's come
  37. 1:19to the conclusion, you know, the biggest
  38. 1:21part of this battle should be won on the
  39. 1:23cultural arena.
  40. 1:25>> Mhm.
  41. 1:25>> The battlefield of ideas. And if you
  42. 1:28take it there
  43. 1:30I think that we can easily win if only
  44. 1:33we would stand up for our own ideas. If
  45. 1:36you are promoting Sharia and you make it
  46. 1:39explicit, you're selling Sharia to
  47. 1:41someone like me.
  48. 1:43Uh I left Islam.
  49. 1:45So for those who leave Islam is the
  50. 1:47death penalty.
  51. 1:49I'm a woman. You want to sell Sharia to
  52. 1:51me? It puts me in a position of chattel.
  53. 1:54You're trying to sell Sharia to a Jewish
  54. 1:57person or a Christian? They've been
  55. 1:58relegated to the status of dhimmi's or
  56. 2:01second class, third class, right?
  57. 2:03Um and then you show people the places
  58. 2:06on this planet today in 2017 where
  59. 2:09Sharia is reality.
  60. 2:11And you see a lot of pain and suffering,
  61. 2:14discrimination, divisiveness, poverty.
  62. 2:17So it's it's not
  63. 2:19a difficult idea, a difficult philosophy
  64. 2:23to defeat. It's just that we're not
  65. 2:25interested for some reason. We're not
  66. 2:27yet We don't get it yet. But once we get
  67. 2:29there,
  68. 2:30all of our ideas, I mean and I know most
  69. 2:33people here today feel a sense of shame
  70. 2:36when they talk about Western
  71. 2:37civilization. But the ideas and
  72. 2:39principles of Western civilization, with
  73. 2:42all their weaknesses and with all their
  74. 2:44pathologies, are far superior to
  75. 2:46anything that Sharia has to offer. We
  76. 2:48shouldn't be embarrassed about saying
  77. 2:50that. That should be where we begin the
  78. 2:51conversation.
  79. 2:52>> Last question. This time I'm going to
  80. 2:53quote President Trump. This is Donald
  81. 2:55Trump speaking this month in Warsaw.
  82. 2:58Quote,
  83. 2:59"The fundamental question of our time is
  84. 3:02whether the West has the will to
  85. 3:04survive.
  86. 3:05>> Yeah.
  87. 3:06>> Do we have the confidence in our values
  88. 3:08to defend them at any cost?
  89. 3:10Do we have enough respect for our
  90. 3:12citizens to protect our borders?
  91. 3:16Do we have the desire and the courage to
  92. 3:18preserve our civilization in the face of
  93. 3:21those who would subvert and destroy it?
  94. 3:24Close quote."
  95. 3:27Does the West have the will
  96. 3:28>> Was that really Donald Trump? I'm not
  97. 3:31I'm not sure I've ever heard Donald
  98. 3:32Trump speak so eloquently before. That's
  99. 3:33crazy.
  100. 3:34>> Is that the fundamental question?
  101. 3:36>> That's a fundamental question. Yeah.
  102. 3:38That is the fundamental question. He
  103. 3:39said these words in Poland and they were
  104. 3:42well received. And what I've noticed,
  105. 3:44I'm I'm, you know, I came to
  106. 3:47the West in 1992. So I'm a newcomer. But
  107. 3:51>> You're doing fine.
  108. 3:52>> Thank [laughter] you.
  109. 3:53In the in this short period, what I
  110. 3:55notice is
  111. 3:57those to whom freedom came late,
  112. 4:00they're the ones who are willing to
  113. 4:02fight.
  114. 4:03The Eastern
  115. 4:04>> having suffered for four decades under
  116. 4:06the communists.
  117. 4:06>> the Eastern Europeans, you know, for
  118. 4:08them it is not some vague story in
  119. 4:11history. It's They still know what it
  120. 4:14was like to be under the Soviet Union,
  121. 4:16to be behind that Iron Curtain, to have
  122. 4:19no freedom. They know what a
  123. 4:21totalitarian ideology is.
  124. 4:23They recognize it and they're willing to
  125. 4:25fight for the core principles of
  126. 4:28freedom.
  127. 4:29And
  128. 4:31that's what Western civilization has
  129. 4:34uh
  130. 4:35has granted in to a certain degree to
  131. 4:38human beings and has promoted and has
  132. 4:40established systems that protect that
  133. 4:42individual freedom. They know that. The
  134. 4:45Northern Europeans,
  135. 4:47to some degree Americans, who have been
  136. 4:50free for so long that they don't know
  137. 4:52what freedom is anymore. They're the
  138. 4:54ones who are in this, I think,
  139. 4:57moral
  140. 4:59um moral twist about and wringing their
  141. 5:03hands and thinking, you know, how can we
  142. 5:05defend Western civilization? I mean,
  143. 5:07what is Western civilization? Is it
  144. 5:09white supremacism or is it something
  145. 5:11else? And if our leaders, if our elites
  146. 5:14cannot tell the difference between white
  147. 5:17nationalism and Western civilization, or
  148. 5:20what it is that makes America great
  149. 5:22again, then I think we're in big
  150. 5:23trouble.
  151. 5:25We'll have to depend on those Eastern
  152. 5:27Europeans to defend us.
  153. 5:29>> That's the
  154. 5:30This really is the last question. I keep
  155. 5:32saying last but this one really is the
  156. 5:33last question.
  157. 5:33>> Yeah.
  158. 5:35>> If the question is whether the West has
  159. 5:37the courage to defend itself, has the
  160. 5:38will to defend itself,
  161. 5:40then you've just identified the central
  162. 5:42sub question within that question, and
  163. 5:45that is will the United States of
  164. 5:48America stop wringing its hands?
  165. 5:51>> Yeah.
  166. 5:52>> What do you think?
  167. 5:54>> Uh I hate to say it, but something has
  168. 5:57to happen to make us focus and to stop
  169. 6:00wringing our hands. Uh
  170. 6:02you know, just turn on the news and the
  171. 6:04first thing you hear is about North
  172. 6:06Korea testing missiles that could hit
  173. 6:08us. Then there's the whole radical
  174. 6:10Islamic phenomenon. There's this rise of
  175. 6:12China, which is
  176. 6:14again in its expression anti-Western.
  177. 6:18And looking at all of that, I think it
  178. 6:21is I don't know. I feel a sense of
  179. 6:23urgency. I hope that you feel a sense of
  180. 6:24urgency that we have something to
  181. 6:26defend. But unfortunately, something
  182. 6:29and this is this is not my analysis.
  183. 6:31This is what I hear from other people.
  184. 6:33This is Americans first try all the bad
  185. 6:36options, and they try all the before and
  186. 6:39then the very last one will be Now, if
  187. 6:42that's the case, I hope we have time
  188. 6:44this time.
  189. 6:45>> [laughter]
  190. 6:47>> I hope we have time as well, but it's
  191. 6:49seeming to me as a first generation born
  192. 6:52in America from parent like immigrant
  193. 6:55parents, I can tell that we are heading
  194. 6:57towards a very very very very dangerous
  195. 6:59precipice. And this is a precipice of of
  196. 7:03of dread for a lot of people who are
  197. 7:04immigrants to America who have escaped
  198. 7:07terrible places to live, this is a place
  199. 7:09of absolute dread. Why do I say dread?
  200. 7:12Because
  201. 7:14what are we in America if we aren't for
  202. 7:17our values? What are we in America if
  203. 7:19we're not for our
  204. 7:20history? What are we if not for our
  205. 7:22culture? And if you keep bringing in
  206. 7:25people, emboldening people, or letting
  207. 7:27people rise up that hate our culture,
  208. 7:29that hate our history, that tell you all
  209. 7:31the time that you're terrible for being
  210. 7:34a part of this or for living here, what
  211. 7:36what can be made of this nation? Where
  212. 7:39can this nation possibly hope to go?
  213. 7:42You know, it's these are really really
  214. 7:44valid questions that I ask. Where in the
  215. 7:46world
  216. 7:48what in the world can one hope to
  217. 7:50accomplish
  218. 7:52with with always being told that
  219. 7:56this is a terrible country and terrible
  220. 7:57region and the terrible people,
  221. 7:59and you're racist and you're terrible,
  222. 8:00and anytime you want to defend or stand
  223. 8:02up for yourself, what can be
  224. 8:03accomplished? I can tell you what,
  225. 8:04nothing can be accomplished from that.
  226. 8:06You have to rise up. You have to change.
  227. 8:09It has to be a big change.
