Axes of movement — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:02An aircraft is an amazing machine
- 0:04capable of flying in any direction by
- 0:06rotating about in three dimensions.
- 0:10These are called axes of movement.
- 0:13[Music]
- 0:18The average location of an aircraft's
- 0:20mass is a point that is called the
- 0:22center of gravity.
- 0:24So if you suspend an aircraft from the
- 0:26center of gravity by a line like this,
- 0:30the aircraft remains perfectly balanced.
- 0:34Each of the three axes moves about the
- 0:36center of gravity.
- 0:39The aircraft's principal axes are normal
- 0:42axis drawn from top to bottom, lateral
- 0:46axis drawn parallel to the wings and
- 0:50longitudinal axis drawn from tail to
- 0:53nose. Each axis is perpendicular to the
- 0:56other two axes.
- 0:59Let's look at each individually.
- 1:03The rotation about lateral axis is
- 1:06called pitch.
- 1:08This movement changes the vertical
- 1:10direction of the aircraft's nose.
- 1:14The rotation about normal axis is called
- 1:17yaw.
- 1:19This is the movement of the nose of the
- 1:21aircraft from side to side.
- 1:25The rotation about the longitudinal axis
- 1:28is called roll.
- 1:30This is the movement of the aircraft's
- 1:32wings. One wing goes up, the opposite
- 1:36wing goes down.
- 1:39So in summary, these are the three
- 1:41principal axes of movement.
