  1. 0:00What? Boost we built.
  2. 0:03What? Drive system malfunction.
  3. 0:07There's a light that came on.
  4. 0:09Use
  5. 0:11it however the camera is. Yeah, see how
  6. 0:13See that? There's oil in there.
  7. 0:14>> Hello viewers. Welcome to Kids Auto and
  8. 0:17Truck Repair. Today we have a 2021
  9. 0:20Audi Q8 with a 3.0 L engine. The
  10. 0:25customer complaint on this vehicle is
  11. 0:27the check engine light is remaining on
  12. 0:29on the dash while the engine is running
  13. 0:31and the vehicle is losing power. She
  14. 0:34told me especially when she's going up a
  15. 0:36hill, the vehicle is losing power
  16. 0:39tremendously. So, the first thing we're
  17. 0:41going to do is we're going to go in the
  18. 0:43vehicle and confirm the customer's
  19. 0:45complaint. We might have to take it on a
  20. 0:47test drive and see how it drives. And
  21. 0:49after that, we're going to scan the
  22. 0:52engine computer to see what codes we
  23. 0:53have and then we'll go from there.
  24. 0:55Behind the camera, we have cameraman
  25. 0:57Kyler. So now, let's go in the vehicle
  26. 1:00so we can confirm the customer's
  27. 1:02complaint. So, I'm going to start the
  28. 1:04engine first.
  29. 1:07So, as you can hear,
  30. 1:09the engine is running.
  31. 1:13We have a message on the dash that says
  32. 1:15reduce engine oil
  33. 1:18and then the check engine light is on.
  34. 1:21This vehicle has 90,000 mi
  35. 1:25315. That's not a lot.
  36. 1:28Okay. So, the check engine light is on
  37. 1:29on the dash. I'm going to show you the
  38. 1:31dash so you can see the check engine
  39. 1:33light. So, right there, as you can see,
  40. 1:36the check engine light is on on the
  41. 1:37dash. So, that's customer's complaint
  42. 1:40confirmed. I'm going to turn off the
  43. 1:42engine.
  44. 1:43Let me start it again. I'm going to show
  45. 1:44you the message
  46. 1:46that was on when I first started it.
  47. 1:48Right there. Reduce
  48. 1:50oil level. So, it looks like this engine
  49. 1:53has
  50. 1:54too much oil in it.
  51. 1:56Okay. So, I'm going to turn off the
  52. 1:58engine.
  53. 1:59So, there's too much oil in the engine.
  54. 2:01We're going to have to check that for
  55. 2:03her.
  56. 2:04Please reduce oil level. The scan tool
  57. 2:07dongle is connected.
  58. 2:09Now, let's scan the engine computer and
  59. 2:11see what codes we have.
  60. 2:15This is an Audi.
  61. 2:18It's a 2021.
  62. 2:20So, right there, vehicle has been
  63. 2:22identified.
  64. 2:232021 Audi Q8 with a 3.0 L engine.
  65. 2:28Let's click okay.
  66. 2:30Let's do a code scan on this.
  67. 2:34Let's see what codes we have.
  68. 2:35Oh, right there.
  69. 2:38P0299
  70. 2:41We are very familiar with this code,
  71. 2:42guys.
  72. 2:44It says turbo supercharger under boost
  73. 2:47or low boost, basically.
  74. 2:49There's a low boost code, Kyler.
  75. 2:51>> Mhm.
  76. 2:53>> What do you think is causing that?
  77. 2:54>> I don't know.
  78. 2:55>> You don't know?
  79. 2:57We fixed a similar issue
  80. 3:00a couple months ago.
  81. 3:03>> It could be a couple things.
  82. 3:05>> Could be a couple things, right?
  83. 3:07Now,
  84. 3:08uh I'm sure on the generic side of the
  85. 3:10scan tool, it's going to say low boost
  86. 3:12or supercharger
  87. 3:15um
  88. 3:16low boost. Now, this code, this P0299
  89. 3:20code, can be caused by a defective turbo
  90. 3:24or a leak in the induction system, so
  91. 3:27between the turbo and the intake
  92. 3:29manifold.
  93. 3:31Um a turbo actuator
  94. 3:34uh wiring that's defective or a turbo
  95. 3:37actuator that's bad.
  96. 3:39So, it could be a couple things.
  97. 3:41Even a boost a a defective uh
  98. 3:45boost pressure sensor can cause this
  99. 3:47also.
  100. 3:48But, the chances of having a defective
  101. 3:53boost uh sensor is very low.
  102. 3:56So, what's really common on these is
  103. 3:58turbos. The turbos on these fail very,
  104. 4:02very uh easily.
  105. 4:05Okay, so they're notorious of failing.
  106. 4:09Actually, I was talking to a friend of
  107. 4:10mine at the
  108. 4:11Audi dealership. He told me that they
  109. 4:13stock a lot of them because they go
  110. 4:16through them a lot. So, even the
  111. 4:18dealership, even the Audi people
  112. 4:19themselves, they know that these
  113. 4:22turbos don't last. Okay, so let's scroll
  114. 4:24down and see what else we have.
  115. 4:27We have one code in the central
  116. 4:29electronics.
  117. 4:31We have five codes in the diagnostic
  118. 4:35data interface gateway.
  119. 4:38I'm going to notify the customer about
  120. 4:40all these other codes.
  121. 4:42But in this video, we're going to focus
  122. 4:45on the low boost code that we have. So,
  123. 4:48on the generic side of the tool, we have
  124. 4:50P0299,
  125. 4:52turbocharger {slash} supercharger
  126. 4:55A under boost condition. So,
  127. 4:58low boost.
  128. 4:59So now, first thing I'm going to do is I
  129. 5:01want to go into the engine computer.
  130. 5:04Let's look at some data.
  131. 5:07Let's look at some data pids.
  132. 5:09I want to see my boost pressure data
  133. 5:12pid. So, right here. Actually,
  134. 5:15this is kind of
  135. 5:17a side note here.
  136. 5:19Engine oil level. Let's see what's the
  137. 5:20data there. Oh, current or current value
  138. 5:24oil level is at 158.2%.
  139. 5:29Yep. Whoever did the oil change last put
  140. 5:31too much oil in this.
  141. 5:33We're going to have to lower
  142. 5:35the oil level.
  143. 5:37Actually, the customer told me
  144. 5:40She told me the name of the shop, but
  145. 5:42I'm not going to say the name, okay?
  146. 5:43We're We're not here to like bash other
  147. 5:45people, okay?
  148. 5:47We're are here to work with other shops,
  149. 5:49not make not throw them under the bus,
  150. 5:51but the customer told me
  151. 5:54Actually, the customer lives nearby. She
  152. 5:55doesn't live far from here.
  153. 5:57She told me she bought the car, you
  154. 6:00know, about a year or two ago.
  155. 6:02She was taking it to the dealer all the
  156. 6:04time and
  157. 6:05one day she decided to use another shop
  158. 6:07nearby. She took it there for an oil
  159. 6:09change. They changed the oil and then
  160. 6:11after she picked it up, there was a
  161. 6:12light on the dash that it was saying oil
  162. 6:14level too much.
  163. 6:16Or release or reduce oil level. She took
  164. 6:19it there for the second time. They
  165. 6:20changed the lowered the oil level.
  166. 6:23The light was still on. And then she got
  167. 6:25so frustrated she never went back. And
  168. 6:27actually she asked me, she said, "Deal,
  169. 6:29you know, I was searching for shops
  170. 6:32online and then I came across your shop.
  171. 6:34I watched the videos. I like how you
  172. 6:36guys do things
  173. 6:37and I felt comfortable bringing my car
  174. 6:39over here based on the videos that I
  175. 6:41saw." And then she also told me, "Can
  176. 6:43you look at the message I have on the
  177. 6:44dash?" It says
  178. 6:46uh reduce oil level. I was like, "It
  179. 6:48looks like there was there's too much
  180. 6:50oil in it." He said, "Yeah." She said,
  181. 6:51"Yes. I mean
  182. 6:53I took it to a shop. They reduced it for
  183. 6:55me, but the light keeps coming back on."
  184. 6:56So,
  185. 6:58there's a possibility that there's too
  186. 7:00much oil in it or maybe the oil level
  187. 7:02sensor is failing. That's possible, but
  188. 7:05we're going to have to check it out. So,
  189. 7:07let's back out here. What I would
  190. 7:08recommend is I'm probably going to
  191. 7:10recommend an oil change. We're going to
  192. 7:11drain the oil out of the engine and then
  193. 7:14we're going to fill it back up to the
  194. 7:15correct level.
  195. 7:18Because when you I mean this is the
  196. 7:20other thing that
  197. 7:21I mean, some of you might know, but some
  198. 7:23of you may not know.
  199. 7:25When you
  200. 7:26fill up the engine, when you fill the
  201. 7:28oil level on these
  202. 7:30uh engines, sometimes you have to
  203. 7:33lower it a little bit because when you
  204. 7:35drive the engine, the oil gets hot and
  205. 7:37then it expands.
  206. 7:39So, if it tells you the engine takes 5
  207. 7:41qt,
  208. 7:42Sometimes you have to put 4 and 1/2.
  209. 7:45Because when she's going to drive, the
  210. 7:46oil is going to expand, and then the
  211. 7:48level is going to rise. So, if if book
  212. 7:50time says 5.2,
  213. 7:53just put 5.
  214. 7:54Because if you put 5.2 or 5 and 1/2, and
  215. 7:57then she drives it, the oil rises, then
  216. 8:00the level goes up, and then the light
  217. 8:01comes on.
  218. 8:02And then the customer looks at you like,
  219. 8:04"Do you know what you're doing?" So,
  220. 8:05yeah. Just a side note to those of you
  221. 8:08who don't know that. Make sure that
  222. 8:10>> What What's the harm in putting too much
  223. 8:12oil?
  224. 8:13>> That's a good question. If you have If
  225. 8:14you put too much oil in the engine,
  226. 8:17it can foul uh spark plugs because you
  227. 8:20you will have oil that's going to pass
  228. 8:22the uh piston rings, and then the oil
  229. 8:25will go on top of the um
  230. 8:27pistons, and then foul the spark plugs.
  231. 8:30It can also
  232. 8:32um damage seals around the engine
  233. 8:34because you're going to have too much
  234. 8:36oil in the engine, and when the um
  235. 8:38the crankshaft is going to spin, it's
  236. 8:40actually going to
  237. 8:42uh push oil towards the seals, so that
  238. 8:45can blow up some seals. Uh so, it's
  239. 8:47going to lower the lifespan of seals
  240. 8:50like rear main seal, front seal, and all
  241. 8:54kinds of seals.
  242. 8:55And then, you can also see white smoke.
  243. 8:58White smoke coming out of the um
  244. 9:01tailpipe because you have oil go past
  245. 9:04the rings, it's going to go in the
  246. 9:05combustion chamber, and some of that oil
  247. 9:08may not burn. It's going to get pushed
  248. 9:10into the exhaust system. If that oil
  249. 9:12gets pushed into the exhaust system,
  250. 9:13guess what? It's going to end up in the
  251. 9:15catalytic converter. You're not supposed
  252. 9:17to have oil in a catalytic converter.
  253. 9:19So, if you have oil in a catalytic
  254. 9:20converter, that's going to cause the
  255. 9:22catalytic converter to overheat, and
  256. 9:24then you're going to damage your
  257. 9:25catalytic converter. So, it's going to
  258. 9:27cause all kinds of issues. So, don't put
  259. 9:29too much oil in it because
  260. 9:31you know, this is why
  261. 9:34I mean, I not I'm not going to name the
  262. 9:36company, but some of you know there are
  263. 9:39companies out there that do cheap oil
  264. 9:41changes for like
  265. 9:43$15.99 or whatever, $5.99. I don't know
  266. 9:46whatever it is, but the quick oil change
  267. 9:49places. They don't charge you as much
  268. 9:52for an oil change, but the thing is some
  269. 9:55of them don't have the correct service
  270. 9:56information that we use. They don't use
  271. 9:59the quality oil that we use cuz we use
  272. 10:02OEM stuff, like the quality stuff that
  273. 10:05we install we get from the dealer for
  274. 10:07the most part, right?
  275. 10:09And we follow service info. We follow
  276. 10:11book time to do things properly, but
  277. 10:14those places sometimes they don't. They
  278. 10:16put too much oil, sometimes too little
  279. 10:18oil. So, a cheap oil change can cause
  280. 10:22issues. I mean, how many times have we
  281. 10:23changed engines over here because the
  282. 10:26car came from that company that was
  283. 10:28changing the oil for the last 2 months
  284. 10:31and now the customer needs an engine. I
  285. 10:34won't say the name. Maybe say the name
  286. 10:36in the comment section.
  287. 10:38You know, so and I tell my customers our
  288. 10:41oil changes are not cheap like I mean,
  289. 10:44we're not going to charge you $55 for an
  290. 10:46oil change. We're way over that, but the
  291. 10:48thing is we're going to do it right and
  292. 10:51if we maintain your vehicle, it's going
  293. 10:54to last long. So, you might spend a
  294. 10:56little bit up front, but in the long run
  295. 10:58it's going to save you money.
  296. 11:01All right, so cameraman Mike is back.
  297. 11:05The food is here.
  298. 11:06>> Pizza.
  299. 11:06>> Pizza is here.
  300. 11:08So, it's pizza day today. All right,
  301. 11:10Kyle. So, let me just look at the Let me
  302. 11:11just look at the data
  303. 11:14and then
  304. 11:15and then we can stop and get some lunch,
  305. 11:17take a lunch break, and then we'll be
  306. 11:18back. So, let me just go to charge
  307. 11:21pressure control.
  308. 11:23>> Didn't we have to change an oil pan or
  309. 11:24something that came from one of those
  310. 11:25places?
  311. 11:26>> Mhm.
  312. 11:27>> They like over
  313. 11:27>> They over too Yeah. Yeah, they actually
  314. 11:30uh they stripped they stripped the oil
  315. 11:33um
  316. 11:33the drain plug.
  317. 11:35>> They stripped the drain plug and we have
  318. 11:36we ended up changing the oil pan, yeah.
  319. 11:39Yeah, so I I tell our customers
  320. 11:42we are here to take care of you.
  321. 11:45We are here to fix your vehicles right,
  322. 11:47but doing things the right way
  323. 11:49I mean nowadays costs, you know,
  324. 11:51everything is more expensive now, so
  325. 11:54I I mean, if I wasn't working on cars, I
  326. 11:58would definitely bring my car to this
  327. 12:00shop.
  328. 12:01Knowing how we do things over here, I
  329. 12:03would definitely bring my car here. So
  330. 12:06guys, make sure
  331. 12:09you take your car to a good shop that's
  332. 12:11going to take care of it, okay?
  333. 12:13Cameraman Kai is laughing behind behind
  334. 12:15the camera. All right, let me start it.
  335. 12:17Let's see.
  336. 12:19So engine is running.
  337. 12:21Right now our charge pressure actual
  338. 12:23value is 14. 86.
  339. 12:2786. So I'm going to rev up the engine.
  340. 12:32So the maximum pressure we're building
  341. 12:34right now
  342. 12:35it kind of went up to about 17. 40
  343. 12:38and that's it.
  344. 12:41Now
  345. 12:42I don't know if you guys can hear this,
  346. 12:44but the engine is not really revving up
  347. 12:47with power. Listen to this, Kai. I'm
  348. 12:49going to rev it. I'm going to step all
  349. 12:51the way
  350. 12:52I'm going to step on the accelerator
  351. 12:53pedal all the way to the floor.
  352. 12:56You hear that? There's like the
  353. 12:59It's like a It It feels like there's a
  354. 13:01rev limiter. So we're not building
  355. 13:03enough boost. It's supposed to go like
  356. 13:06You know what I mean? Like It's supposed
  357. 13:08I mean, you know what I mean? Like the
  358. 13:09the RPM.
  359. 13:11Maybe I should have Gavin rev it for us.
  360. 13:16Yeah.
  361. 13:17All right, cool. We're going to stop
  362. 13:19here. Let's go get some lunch first. And
  363. 13:22then when we get back after our lunch,
  364. 13:23we're going to pick it back up.
  365. 13:25I want to rev it a couple of times. I
  366. 13:26might have to have Ravi, I mean Gavin,
  367. 13:28rev it for us.
  368. 13:30So, we can watch this. And then we're
  369. 13:31going to go under the hood before I take
  370. 13:34it on a test drive. We can smoke test
  371. 13:36the induction system to see if we have a
  372. 13:38boost leak. I don't hear a boost leak
  373. 13:40under the hood though. Cuz usually when
  374. 13:42you have a boost leak, you will hear a
  375. 13:43hissing sound coming from under the
  376. 13:45hood. Cuz when I rev it,
  377. 13:48I don't hear a hissing sound.
  378. 13:50So, I don't think we have a boost leak.
  379. 13:55Okay. So,
  380. 13:57let's take a quick break. We'll be right
  381. 13:59back. We're back from our lunch break.
  382. 14:03We ate some pizza. Kyler, did you enjoy
  383. 14:06your your lunch?
  384. 14:07>> I thought it was good. Thank you.
  385. 14:08>> It was good. You're welcome.
  386. 14:10We had pizza here today, guys. Pizza
  387. 14:12day.
  388. 14:13Anyways, so here the here is the code
  389. 14:15that we have. We were looking at the
  390. 14:17data before we went to lunch.
  391. 14:21So, we were looking at our boost
  392. 14:23pressure data PID.
  393. 14:27So, I graphed
  394. 14:29these PIDs over here.
  395. 14:32Let me start the engine one more time.
  396. 14:36Okay. So, I'm going to rev it.
  397. 14:42So, as you can hear,
  398. 14:44it sounds like the engine is not
  399. 14:46building enough boost pressure.
  400. 14:53So, what I want to do is before we go
  401. 14:55under the hood, let's take this for a
  402. 14:57spin. Let's drive it around
  403. 15:00and see
  404. 15:01uh what kind of boost we're going to
  405. 15:03build while we're driving. And then when
  406. 15:05we get back, we're going to do some
  407. 15:07tests under the hood. So, Kyler,
  408. 15:10jump in and let's go on a test drive.
  409. 15:12Let's drive out of here.
  410. 15:17Got to get the seatbelt on.
  411. 15:20Safety first.
  412. 15:24So, check engine light is still on.
  413. 15:27We did not clear the codes.
  414. 15:31All right. So, so far
  415. 15:35we're building about 14.6
  416. 15:38PSI.
  417. 15:40When I rev it up a little bit, we went
  418. 15:42up to about 15 PSI.
  419. 15:49She said it most it it loses power
  420. 15:52mostly when you going when you going up
  421. 15:54a hill.
  422. 15:56We don't really have a hill over here.
  423. 15:58We can go try this out.
  424. 16:00Maybe this hill coming up here.
  425. 16:03So, we're going down this way and
  426. 16:05come back.
  427. 16:10And pick up some speed over here.
  428. 16:22Did I mention that it's common for these
  429. 16:24turbos to fail
  430. 16:25on these Audis?
  431. 16:27Uh it's a very common thing over here.
  432. 16:30>> Oh, it feels good so far.
  433. 16:31>> It does, yeah.
  434. 16:34But, we we're just driving on flat on a
  435. 16:36flat surface.
  436. 16:39You think this is a hill?
  437. 16:45It it feels fine.
  438. 16:53I wish I could really go fast, but
  439. 16:56with these turns here
  440. 16:59we got to be careful.
  441. 17:17I mean, it's building
  442. 17:20It's building boost.
  443. 17:25But not
  444. 17:28not enough.
  445. 17:30It's building a good amount, but not
  446. 17:37not a ton.
  447. 17:40I'm just going to floor it here. Let's
  448. 17:42see.
  449. 17:47So, maximum boost we built
  450. 17:51What? Drive system malfunction.
  451. 17:55There's a light that came on.
  452. 17:57Drive system malfunction.
  453. 17:58>> Yeah, I got it.
  454. 18:00>> Why?
  455. 18:01>> Huh.
  456. 18:02>> Is it because of the light with the
  457. 18:04check engine light?
  458. 18:08>> I don't know. The power feels good.
  459. 18:13>> So, for example, right now I'm flooring
  460. 18:15it.
  461. 18:16No, it's going down right now.
  462. 18:20I mean, it's not It should be going up
  463. 18:22to like 25 or even 30 PSI.
  464. 18:26So,
  465. 18:27it's building power, but not enough.
  466. 18:30Yeah, not enough. It should be building
  467. 18:32more boost.
  468. 18:35Yeah, it's It should be building more
  469. 18:37boost pressure. Actually, we can just
  470. 18:39turn around here.
  471. 18:41Man, it's getting green over here.
  472. 18:43>> No, it's
  473. 18:43>> Beautiful. It's starting to look nice.
  474. 18:45Look.
  475. 18:46Oh my gosh.
  476. 18:48>> good.
  477. 18:48>> I know.
  478. 18:49Okay, actually, you know what I'm going
  479. 18:50to do?
  480. 18:51Okay, let me turn it off. Turn the key
  481. 18:53on.
  482. 18:54Turn it off. Turn the key on.
  483. 18:56Let me look at the data page from the
  484. 18:59generic side. Go to OBD direct.
  485. 19:02Let's see what the boost pressure
  486. 19:04reading is going to be from the generic
  487. 19:07side of the tool.
  488. 19:09Because sometimes on the Sometimes on
  489. 19:11the OEM side
  490. 19:13we might be dealing with substituted
  491. 19:16values.
  492. 19:18And that can throw us off sometimes. So,
  493. 19:21OBD generic can be the way to go
  494. 19:24sometimes. Actually, let me back out.
  495. 19:26Let me see if we have freeze frame
  496. 19:29available here.
  497. 19:31Freeze frame.
  498. 19:34Let me see when this trouble code was
  499. 19:36set.
  500. 19:37So, this trouble code was set at 18 and
  501. 19:4137
  502. 19:42RPMs.
  503. 19:44Engine temperature was Engine
  504. 19:47temperature was 200 and
  505. 19:5013°
  506. 19:52short-term
  507. 19:54I mean long-term was minus 1.4.
  508. 19:57And then short-term was 2.3. Where is
  509. 19:59boost pressure? Do we have boost
  510. 20:01pressure data pit here? So, calculated
  511. 20:03load value was 64.3%
  512. 20:08commanded thorough angle control was
  513. 20:1165.9%.
  514. 20:14And then
  515. 20:17this happened in closed loop, so no
  516. 20:20boost pressure.
  517. 20:21Hm.
  518. 20:22Okay.
  519. 20:23That is good to know.
  520. 20:25It's interesting how we don't have a
  521. 20:26boost pressure
  522. 20:29data pit on the generic side.
  523. 20:32Let's see.
  524. 20:36Oh, right here. Boost pressure A.
  525. 20:39But we did have the speed over here on
  526. 20:41the
  527. 20:43freeze frame.
  528. 20:45That's interesting. So, let's customize
  529. 20:47this list.
  530. 20:49Let's grab
  531. 20:53our
  532. 20:59the our data pits that we need to look
  533. 21:01at.
  534. 21:12>> Okay, so here are the only pids I want
  535. 21:14to look at. I'm going to graph my boost
  536. 21:17pressure data pid.
  537. 21:19So, let's start the engine.
  538. 21:22Okay, let's turn around here.
  539. 21:43I mean, this is a Q8.
  540. 21:45Actually, when I'm thinking about the Q5
  541. 21:47that we worked on a couple months ago,
  542. 21:49>> Mhm.
  543. 21:49>> it had 90,000 mi, too.
  544. 21:51>> Oh.
  545. 21:52>> This one has 90,000 mi.
  546. 21:54>> Oh.
  547. 21:54>> So, I'm starting to notice a pattern
  548. 21:56here.
  549. 21:57>> Yeah.
  550. 21:57>> Maybe
  551. 21:58when you get to about 90,000 mi on these
  552. 22:02Audis, that's when you needed the turbo.
  553. 22:11Okay, so maximum boost that we built is
  554. 22:1618.9
  555. 22:17psi.
  556. 22:23And also, you know, a failing turbo will
  557. 22:26do that, too.
  558. 22:27Sometimes it would work fine, sometimes
  559. 22:29it would stop working. So, it would be
  560. 22:31failing intermittently. Dang, my butt is
  561. 22:34on fire right now. This This seat gets
  562. 22:36really hot.
  563. 22:38Jeez.
  564. 22:39>> I got the warmer on.
  565. 22:40>> Uh
  566. 22:46Uh-oh.
  567. 22:48Slow down.
  568. 22:56I believe this message is coming on on
  569. 22:58the dash because we have a
  570. 23:00code in the engine computer,
  571. 23:02the P0299 code.
  572. 23:07Okay, I'm going to try to go really fast
  573. 23:10going up the hill
  574. 23:11to see how much boost we're going to
  575. 23:13build
  576. 23:14when we're climbing up the hill.
  577. 23:20So, I'm going to let all these cars in
  578. 23:21front of us get away.
  579. 23:24Then
  580. 23:27we're going to give it the beans. It's
  581. 23:29interesting how thing everything is
  582. 23:31starting to turn green right now.
  583. 23:33But a couple weeks ago it was all dead
  584. 23:36and dry and
  585. 23:38but now
  586. 23:39>> All that rain we've been getting.
  587. 23:40>> I know. So, we're going up the hill. I'm
  588. 23:43going to I'm going to give it the beans.
  589. 23:46Let's go up. Let's see.
  590. 23:49Going up.
  591. 23:52So, maximum boost we built
  592. 23:56is about 18 PSI.
  593. 24:00Now, as we were going up the hill, I
  594. 24:02don't know if you noticed, Skyler, we
  595. 24:04didn't shift.
  596. 24:05You know what I mean? And we didn't
  597. 24:07shift because we were because that that
  598. 24:09hill wasn't long enough. If it was a
  599. 24:11longer hill, we were going to notice
  600. 24:13that low power that that like power
  601. 24:15decrease.
  602. 24:16So, yeah.
  603. 24:18Going up the hill, we're not building
  604. 24:19enough
  605. 24:21boost pressure. We're building enough. I
  606. 24:23mean, we're building about we we built
  607. 24:25about 18 PSI when we were going up the
  608. 24:28hill, which tells me that the turbo was
  609. 24:30trying to build that boost pressure. If
  610. 24:33we don't have a leak cuz right now what
  611. 24:35I want to do is let's get in the shop
  612. 24:37and
  613. 24:38smoke test it.
  614. 24:40If there are no leaks around the turbo,
  615. 24:43we're going to check the actuator of the
  616. 24:45turbo. If the wiring of the actuator is
  617. 24:47fine,
  618. 24:48we're going to recommend changing a
  619. 24:50turbo.
  620. 24:51Yeah.
  621. 24:52Based on the data that we have and based
  622. 24:55on experience because I mean, I don't
  623. 24:57think the uh
  624. 24:58turbo actuator wiring has an issue.
  625. 25:00Because if we had a wiring issue, we
  626. 25:03would have a code for it. But, we're
  627. 25:05still going to check it before we
  628. 25:06condemn
  629. 25:08the turbo. So,
  630. 25:09now I'm going to turn off the engine.
  631. 25:12Let's go under the hood and do a visual
  632. 25:14inspection. And then we're going to
  633. 25:15smoke test the induction system. Let's
  634. 25:18open the hood.
  635. 25:25German engineering.
  636. 25:28We love Audis.
  637. 25:31Do you like Audis, Kyler?
  638. 25:34You do?
  639. 25:35Yeah, they're good cars, right? Yeah.
  640. 25:37They ride very nice.
  641. 25:41Yeah, I like them, too.
  642. 25:43I do like them.
  643. 25:45So,
  644. 25:46the Audi expert, Robin,
  645. 25:49told me that there are some clips over
  646. 25:51here on the side
  647. 25:53that you have to
  648. 25:58undo
  649. 26:08so we can remove this cover.
  650. 26:17What in the heck?
  651. 26:20Okay.
  652. 26:22This side over here is off.
  653. 26:25But, this side is not.
  654. 26:28There we go.
  655. 26:39There you go, Audi.
  656. 26:41Okay, so first things first, we're going
  657. 26:43to do a visual inspection.
  658. 26:48Everything over here looks good.
  659. 26:51I'm checking these this tube over here,
  660. 26:53this
  661. 26:54this charger cooler tube.
  662. 26:57Cuz these ones usually leak.
  663. 27:08You know what?
  664. 27:10I should get this on the lift.
  665. 27:13You know what I mean?
  666. 27:13>> Maybe.
  667. 27:14>> That way we can also inspect the bottom.
  668. 27:17Cuz these charger could these tubes go
  669. 27:19to the charger cooler.
  670. 27:22I mean, we can just smoke test it here,
  671. 27:23but what if we have a leak somewhere
  672. 27:26over there?
  673. 27:27Okay, let me get this on the lift and
  674. 27:29then I'll bring you guys back up. All
  675. 27:30right, I got the vehicle on the lift.
  676. 27:33Let's redo this.
  677. 27:36Now, I'm going to install some fender
  678. 27:38covers here.
  679. 27:39We do not want to scratch the paint.
  680. 27:44So, this is going to cover
  681. 27:48the paint.
  682. 27:52And then this is going to go right here.
  683. 27:57We don't want the customer's paint to
  684. 27:59get scratched. Perfect. You like that,
  685. 28:02Tyler?
  686. 28:02>> Yeah.
  687. 28:03>> Nice.
  688. 28:04So, now
  689. 28:06we are going to install
  690. 28:09the light.
  691. 28:15Nice. All right.
  692. 28:16So,
  693. 28:18we do the visual inspection here.
  694. 28:23I'm going to remove this guy.
  695. 28:30Now, this thing just pops off.
  696. 28:34I'm just going to pop it out.
  697. 28:37It's going to
  698. 28:38gently
  699. 28:41pry it out.
  700. 28:44There There go.
  701. 28:48And then
  702. 28:49we're going to undo this clamp over
  703. 28:51here.
  704. 29:09There.
  705. 29:11So, here comes the engine air filter
  706. 29:13housing.
  707. 29:16Let's get these out of the way.
  708. 29:19Tada!
  709. 29:21Check this out.
  710. 29:23Here is our turbo charger.
  711. 29:26Looks clean, though.
  712. 29:31And
  713. 29:34this over here
  714. 29:36looks like this over here is the
  715. 29:38solenoid for it.
  716. 29:40It's a turbo solenoid. That's the
  717. 29:41solenoid for the actuator.
  718. 29:46And then
  719. 29:51Oh, I see oil over there.
  720. 29:54Do you see it? I don't know if I don't
  721. 29:56know how well the camera is. Yeah, see
  722. 29:57how See that? There's oil in there.
  723. 30:00That's not good.
  724. 30:01We shouldn't be having a lot of oil in
  725. 30:03there.
  726. 30:05That's no bueno, Kyler.
  727. 30:08Yeah.
  728. 30:10I mean, it's not smoking, though. I
  729. 30:12couldn't really
  730. 30:13tell, but
  731. 30:15a little bit of oil on this
  732. 30:17PCV tube is fine.
  733. 30:21But, a lot is definitely a problem.
  734. 30:24Looks pretty good.
  735. 30:25Now,
  736. 30:27let me grab my
  737. 30:28vacuum machine. We're going to connect
  738. 30:30it, and then we'll do
  739. 30:32we'll vacuum this induction system here.
  740. 30:34So, I got my smoke machine here.
  741. 30:38I'm going to power it up.
  742. 30:40And then we're going to smoke
  743. 30:43this induction system here.
  744. 30:48Let's see what
  745. 30:52what we have here. So, power,
  746. 30:55ground.
  747. 30:58Smoke ma- Smoke machine is powered up.
  748. 31:10It's right here.
  749. 31:14Let's increase this up to 15 psi.
  750. 31:1815 psi.
  751. 31:21I'm going to put this adapter over here.
  752. 31:32So, we should have smoke coming out of
  753. 31:34this.
  754. 31:44>> It's like coming out the back
  755. 31:46of the smoke machine.
  756. 31:48>> Oh.
  757. 31:49There's a leak here.
  758. 31:51Let me see if we have smoke going into
  759. 31:53the engine. I'm going to undo the oil
  760. 31:55fill tube. Oh, there.
  761. 31:58Yeah. See that? Okay, so we got smoke We
  762. 32:01have smoke coming out of this because
  763. 32:03it's going through the PCV system. So, I
  764. 32:05don't see a leak up here.
  765. 32:12So, we have smoke going through the
  766. 32:14induction system.
  767. 32:16And there's a little bit over here. Let
  768. 32:17me just push this.
  769. 32:19Let me push this guy all the way in.
  770. 32:28My adapter is a little small.
  771. 32:37Now, let me open up this cap again.
  772. 32:40Oh, yeah. See that?
  773. 32:41>> Oh, yeah.
  774. 32:42>> The fact that it's coming out with a lot
  775. 32:44of pressure, this tells me that Yeah,
  776. 32:46see? We don't have a leak.
  777. 32:49We do not have a leak.
  778. 32:51Let me look underneath.
  779. 32:53Nothing over here.
  780. 32:55Okay.
  781. 32:58Let me back out.
  782. 33:01Yeah.
  783. 33:02Cuz I don't want to keep this on while
  784. 33:05we raised it up.
  785. 33:08Uh maybe I should.
  786. 33:11Let me do it at about
  787. 33:135 PSI.
  788. 33:15So, about 4 PSI. Okay.
  789. 33:17So, now I set my smoke machine to 4 PSI.
  790. 33:21Now, let's let's raise up the vehicle.
  791. 33:25Let's see what we got.
  792. 33:28Now, this shouldn't need much because it
  793. 33:30only has
  794. 33:3190,000 mi, so
  795. 33:34But, you never know. Don't assume.
  796. 33:36Always test.
  797. 33:38All right. So, we got the vehicle up in
  798. 33:40the air.
  799. 33:41Now,
  800. 33:42I'm looking around the charger cooler
  801. 33:45here.
  802. 33:46Carler, if you can show this component.
  803. 33:48>> Oh, yeah.
  804. 33:48>> Now, these Audis have two charger
  805. 33:50coolers. There is one on each side of
  806. 33:52the vehicle.
  807. 33:54They usually put one
  808. 33:55uh charger cooler below the uh
  809. 33:58headlight. Now, you see how dry it is
  810. 34:00over here?
  811. 34:01>> Yeah.
  812. 34:01>> And you know how we know that a charger
  813. 34:04cooler is leaking?
  814. 34:05If there's oil around it. Remember?
  815. 34:07>> Oh, yeah.
  816. 34:08>> You know? From the Sprinters. There you
  817. 34:10go. Carler is becoming an a expert here.
  818. 34:14A diesel
  819. 34:16uh diagnostician here. Yeah, so the fact
  820. 34:18that everything around these tubes is
  821. 34:20dry, this tells me that this charger
  822. 34:23cooler is not leaking. So, now let's
  823. 34:25check the one on this side.
  824. 34:27So, same thing.
  825. 34:29Can you see up there, Carler?
  826. 34:30>> Yep.
  827. 34:31>> You see how dry it is?
  828. 34:32>> Mhm.
  829. 34:33>> No oil.
  830. 34:35You know,
  831. 34:36no oil residue here. So,
  832. 34:39this tells me that we do not have a
  833. 34:42leak. And also, if we had a leak down
  834. 34:44here, we would see smoke coming out of
  835. 34:46these charger coolers.
  836. 34:48So,
  837. 34:50now, I'm just going to look around and
  838. 34:52see if there's anything else
  839. 34:54that needs attention.
  840. 34:58Uh look at this over here, Kyler.
  841. 35:00So, this this tensioner
  842. 35:02>> Mhm.
  843. 35:03>> You see how rusty it is? You see the
  844. 35:05rust behind the tensioner there?
  845. 35:07>> Oh, yeah.
  846. 35:08>> Yeah, that's not good.
  847. 35:09This this tensioner needs to be changed
  848. 35:12because it's going to start squeaking
  849. 35:13eventually
  850. 35:14and uh
  851. 35:17that can break. So, I would recommend
  852. 35:19changing that tensioner, too.
  853. 35:21That rust is coming from the spring
  854. 35:23inside the tensioner.
  855. 35:26The belt looks very fine.
  856. 35:29No leaks around the front of the engine.
  857. 35:38Good.
  858. 35:40Nothing here. It's really dry back here,
  859. 35:42so that's good.
  860. 35:47Guys, I've said this in our previous
  861. 35:49videos. I'm going to say this again.
  862. 35:51When we bring a vehicle in the shop, we
  863. 35:53always inspect it.
  864. 35:56Okay, so we're going to inspect this
  865. 35:58vehicle. We're going to take pictures
  866. 36:00and send the inspection report to the
  867. 36:02customer.
  868. 36:04But as I'm looking over here, I'm just
  869. 36:05doing a quick visual inspection here.
  870. 36:08I don't see anything that's really
  871. 36:10catching my eye.
  872. 36:12You know, nothing too crazy. She might
  873. 36:14need
  874. 36:16rear brakes soon
  875. 36:18cuz the the caliper piston over here is
  876. 36:20pushed out a lot.
  877. 36:22Let me see over here.
  878. 36:27Yeah, she will need brakes.
  879. 36:30Oh, yeah.
  880. 36:31Can you show over here? I don't know how
  881. 36:33well you can see this.
  882. 36:34See my finger in there?
  883. 36:36>> Mhm.
  884. 36:37>> Yeah. You You see how how pushed out the
  885. 36:40>> Yeah.
  886. 36:40>> caliper piston is?
  887. 36:42>> Yeah.
  888. 36:43>> When you see a piston being pushed out
  889. 36:45all the way like that, that means the
  890. 36:47pad are worn out.
  891. 36:50So,
  892. 36:51yeah.
  893. 36:52We're going to put all of that in the
  894. 36:54inspection report. Let me check the
  895. 36:56front. Actually, the front pads
  896. 36:58look pretty okay. It's the back ones
  897. 37:01she's going to need need
  898. 37:03rear pads.
  899. 37:05Okay.
  900. 37:07So, based on what I see here,
  901. 37:11you know,
  902. 37:12this is leading me towards a bad turbo
  903. 37:15because we don't have a leak.
  904. 37:18Now, the last thing we need to do is we
  905. 37:20need to use a scan tool and check the
  906. 37:22actuator of the turbo with the scan tool
  907. 37:24to make sure it's working.
  908. 37:26And then, we're done.
  909. 37:28So, let me let me lower the vehicle.
  910. 37:34So, our charger coolers are not leaking,
  911. 37:37so that's good.
  912. 37:40Okay.
  913. 37:43So,
  914. 37:45what else do we need to check? So, this
  915. 37:47actuator over here,
  916. 37:50if you can show this actuator,
  917. 37:53this waste gate actuator, it's a vacuum
  918. 37:55operated.
  919. 37:57It looks like we're going to have to do
  920. 37:58this while the engine is running.
  921. 38:00Okay, let me get my smoke machine out of
  922. 38:03the way.
  923. 38:04We are done with this.
  924. 38:13So, now I need I need to reconnect the
  925. 38:16air filter box.
  926. 38:18Hold on. Let me see. I should be able to
  927. 38:20Wait.
  928. 38:24Here's the whole thing.
  929. 38:26Mhm.
  930. 38:28Do I need to remove this? You know what?
  931. 38:30I'm going to start it without the
  932. 38:31filter.
  933. 38:32Just for a few
  934. 38:34minutes.
  935. 38:36Just for a few minutes, Kyler.
  936. 38:38Okay, let me grab the scan tool. We got
  937. 38:40Robin in the car. The key is on.
  938. 38:45Let me see what kind of a functional
  939. 38:47test we have here.
  940. 38:49Turbo bypass valve off.
  941. 38:52Turbo charger recirculating valve. Yeah.
  942. 38:55Start it.
  943. 39:00Okay.
  944. 39:07Rev it just slightly.
  945. 39:11You see how the gear Do you see how the
  946. 39:13wastegate is moving?
  947. 39:15Rev it.
  948. 39:18Okay, let go.
  949. 39:20Did you see how the actuator was moving?
  950. 39:24Okay. Now, focus on the actuator, Kyler.
  951. 39:28Rev it again just slightly. Okay.
  952. 39:30Start it again.
  953. 39:34Okay.
  954. 39:35Rev it.
  955. 39:41Okay, hold on.
  956. 39:43Let me uh
  957. 39:45Let me do all these turbo
  958. 39:47tests that I have here.
  959. 39:52Over here.
  960. 39:57I mean, the fact that the actuator lever
  961. 39:59turned I mean, moved earlier,
  962. 40:02that tells me that the solenoid that
  963. 40:05controls the uh
  964. 40:06turbo actuator
  965. 40:08is being controlled by the engine
  966. 40:10computer.
  967. 40:23>> Okay, rev it.
  968. 40:24Just snap.
  969. 40:33There.
  970. 40:35Snap it again.
  971. 40:37There. Snap it.
  972. 40:40All right, that's good.
  973. 40:42Turn your off. Okay, so this actuator
  974. 40:45here is vacuum controlled, okay? The
  975. 40:49engine computer controls this solenoid
  976. 40:51over here.
  977. 40:52Okay, which allows vacuum to go from one
  978. 40:55side of the solenoid to the other to
  979. 40:57actually control this actuator.
  980. 41:00Okay, so the wastegate actuator is being
  981. 41:02controlled.
  982. 41:04So which tells me that the engine
  983. 41:05computer is trying to
  984. 41:07create boost that we need.
  985. 41:10So turbo.
  986. 41:12So
  987. 41:13Audi expert
  988. 41:16These turbos has got to go.
  989. 41:18>> Awful.
  990. 41:21100,000 100,000 miles.
  991. 41:22>> Yeah.
  992. 41:23>> Regular.
  993. 41:23>> Yeah.
  994. 41:24Yeah.
  995. 41:25>> 2.2 always do the same thing.
  996. 41:26>> 2.2, yeah. Actually the the one we did
  997. 41:28last time failed at 90,000 miles.
  998. 41:32>> Yeah.
  999. 41:32>> And this one has 90,000 miles, too.
  1000. 41:34>> Yeah.
  1001. 41:34>> Yeah.
  1002. 41:35>> Regular.
1003. 41:35>> Yeah. So they fail around 100,000 miles,
  1004. 41:38basically.
  1005. 41:38>> Yep. Yeah.
1006. 41:40>> So we checked there we checked the
1007. 41:41induction system. There are no leaks.
1008. 41:43Oh, yeah. So now I'm going to call the
1009. 41:45Audi dealership. I'm going to ask them
1010. 41:48to give me a list of all the components
1011. 41:50that I need to do this turbo, including
  1012. 41:52the the turbo itself.
  1013. 41:55OEM parts only.
  1014. 41:56>> Yeah.
1015. 41:57>> Especially for these kind of vehicles,
  1016. 41:59OEM only. We're going to get a OEM
1017. 42:01turbo, all the gaskets, bolts. For
1018. 42:03example, these bolts that I see over
  1019. 42:05here, I'm sure we're going to have to
  1020. 42:07change these.
  1021. 42:08>> Oh, yeah.
  1022. 42:08>> See that?
  1023. 42:09>> Yep.
1024. 42:09>> Cuz this is the
  1025. 42:12exhaust
  1026. 42:13>> manifold
  1027. 42:14>> manifold with it.
  1028. 42:15>> Yeah.
1029. 42:16>> Cuz as I'm looking, I believe all of
1030. 42:17this will be the turbo.
  1031. 42:18>> Yeah.
1032. 42:19>> Yeah. So, yeah. So, the the uh exhaust
1033. 42:21manifold is part of it.
  1034. 42:23>> Yeah.
1035. 42:23>> So, exhaust manifold gaskets, turbo
  1036. 42:26gaskets, seals, bolts, everything.
  1037. 42:29>> Everything.
1038. 42:30>> Yeah. Clamps. Probably this clamp, too.
  1039. 42:32>> Yeah.
1040. 42:33>> You know? And uh yeah. All the good
1041. 42:35stuff. Now, this over here, I believe
1042. 42:37this is the oxygen sensor.
  1043. 42:38>> Yes.
1044. 42:40>> Yeah. And sometimes these guys can get
1045. 42:41stuck. So, if this is stuck,
1046. 42:44we I'm going to have to put it in the
1047. 42:46estimate, and I'm going to tell the
1048. 42:47customer this is optional. If it comes
1049. 42:49out easily, we don't have to change it.
1050. 42:51If it's stuck to the point where we have
1051. 42:53to destroy it to remove it, then we got
1052. 42:55to change it. So, yeah.
1053. 42:57>> Are you saying the air mass air sensor?
  1054. 42:59>> Yeah. So,
1055. 43:01we are using our experience here and the
1056. 43:04data that we have collected to call for
  1057. 43:07a turbo.
  1058. 43:08So,
  1059. 43:09she needs a turbo.
  1060. 43:10>> Oh, yeah.
  1061. 43:12>> All right. So, that's it, guys. We're
1062. 43:13going to leave this right over here. I
1063. 43:14am going to make an estimate and let the
  1064. 43:18customer know. Hopefully, we're going to
1065. 43:20get the job. Once we get the approval, I
1066. 43:23will bring you guys back up so we can
1067. 43:25show you the new turbo, and then we will
1068. 43:27change the turbo, and I'm sure after we
1069. 43:29change the turbo, this vehicle is going
1070. 43:31to drive very well. Actually, when we
  1071. 43:34took it on a test drive, it's driving
  1072. 43:36somewhat okay.
  1073. 43:37>> Okay.
  1074. 43:38>> It's building boost, but I believe it's
  1075. 43:40failing intermittently. I don't know if
  1076. 43:42it's the wastegate that's sticking
  1077. 43:44sometimes.
  1078. 43:45>> Wastegate do that.
1079. 43:46>> Yeah. Because sometimes cuz when I was
1080. 43:48driving, there were times where it felt
1081. 43:49fine, and then when I revved it up all
1082. 43:51the way, it would only build up pressure
  1083. 43:53up to like 17 PSI.
  1084. 43:56>> Wow.
1085. 43:56>> Which is lower than normal, because this
1086. 43:57one should go all the way up to
1087. 43:59sometimes 30 uh PSI on the boost
1088. 44:02pressure. On you know, when you have a
  1089. 44:04good trans um
1090. 44:05good turbo, not good transmission.
1091. 44:07Yeah, when you have a good turbo.
  1092. 44:08>> Yeah.
1093. 44:09>> Yeah. Anyways, so, why don't you get in
1094. 44:12the comment section and let us know what
1095. 44:14you think about this. If you were
  1096. 44:16diagnosing this,
1097. 44:18would you do something differently? If
1098. 44:20you were going to do this differently,
1099. 44:21let us know in the comment section. So,
1100. 44:23be on the lookout for part two of this
1101. 44:25video. We will let you know what the
1102. 44:27customer decides. Everybody, thanks for
  1103. 44:29being here. If you're a subscriber
1104. 44:31coming back to watch this, I appreciate
1105. 44:33you. Thank you for bringing business to
1106. 44:35us. We're growing because of you. Our
1107. 44:37business is growing because of you and I
1108. 44:39can't thank you guys enough. We do not
1109. 44:41have a marketing budget. You are our
1110. 44:43marketing. Thank you. Thank you. Thank
1111. 44:45you. My man cameraman Kyler, thanks for
1112. 44:47being behind the camera. Once again,
  1113. 44:49comments, questions, criticism, leave
1114. 44:51them in the comment box. If you're not a
1115. 44:52subscriber, please subscribe to our
  1116. 44:54YouTube channel. I would really
  1117. 44:56appreciate that.
  1118. 44:56>> a thumbs up, too.
1119. 44:57>> Yeah. Give it a thumbs up. Not a thumb
1120. 44:59down, okay? Thumbs up, yeah. Thanks,
  1121. 45:01Robin.
  1122. 45:01>> You're welcome.
  1123. 45:02>> Thank you, everybody.
  1124. 45:04Uh, be on the lookout for a follow-up
1125. 45:06video. See you next time. All right,
1126. 45:08guys. I'm going to give you an update on
1127. 45:09this Audi Q8. We actually are not going
1128. 45:13to get the job. Uh, the customer has a
1129. 45:16warranty company that they were
1130. 45:19paying. We went back and forth with the
1131. 45:21warranty company and the warranty
1132. 45:23company didn't want to pay the full
1133. 45:25bill. They wanted the customer to pay a
1134. 45:27portion of the bill and the customer was
1135. 45:30not okay with that and uh, they told us
1136. 45:32that they're going to go ahead and not
1137. 45:35fix the vehicle. So, we're not going to
1138. 45:36get the job. The customer is going to
1139. 45:38pay for our diagnosis and then we're
1140. 45:40going to move on with another vehicle.
1141. 45:42Now, I might make another uh, video in
1142. 45:45the future about these warranty
  1143. 45:47companies. I'm starting to notice a
1144. 45:49trend with a lot of the warranty
1145. 45:51companies out there. They are a pain in
1146. 45:53the butt to deal with. I'm starting to
1147. 45:55get to a point where I'm going to stop
1148. 45:57taking jobs that have to involve
1149. 45:59warranty companies. Let me know if you
1150. 46:01have a shop and uh, how do you deal with
