- 0:00An idiot in motion will go further than
- 0:02a genius at rest. I recently saw this
- 0:05quote while doom scrolling and it
- 0:06stopped me in my tracks because the more
- 0:08I thought about it, the more I realized
- 0:10it was true. I started thinking about it
- 0:12in terms of audacity and it made even
- 0:14more sense because someone can have a
- 0:16crazy amount of talent but never do much
- 0:18with it if they don't respect or
- 0:20recognize their own worth. I'm sure
- 0:22you've also thought this about some
- 0:23people who may seem to be less talented
- 0:25than you at a certain skill but are
- 0:27publicly excelling and gaining a lot of
- 0:29recognition for it because they decided
- 0:31to put themselves out there and act on
- 0:33their ambitions. Sometimes you might
- 0:35think things like, "I'm way better at
- 0:37singing or drawing or directing or
- 0:39skating or speaking than them. So, why
- 0:41am I not getting the same opportunities
- 0:43if not more?" And after studying the
- 0:46mindset and thought patterns of a lot of
- 0:48successful actors, musicians, and
- 0:50artists, true long-term growth seems to
- 0:52start from an unwavering self-concept.
- 0:55And by that, I mean having the courage
- 0:57and resilience to continuously trust in
- 0:59your own vision. The author of The
- 1:01Artist's Way, Julia Cameron, also talks
- 1:03about how audacity is more important in
- 1:06succeeding as an artist than talent
- 1:08because taking bold action and sharing
- 1:10your work is what actually turns a
- 1:12dreamer into a creator.
- 1:17>> And my word of the year has been
- 1:19audacity. It's not about talent cuz I
- 1:22realized everybody has a talent.
- 1:24Everybody has potential. Everybody has
- 1:26some type of creative ability. Praise
- 1:28God. That's you. What puts an artist
- 1:30center stage, even Julia said it in the
- 1:32book. What puts an artist center stage
- 1:34is not talent, it is audacity. The only
- 1:36thing that I really feel like I have is
- 1:38my talent, my skill, and my audacity.
- 1:41And that is going to be the thing that
- 1:43I'm going to let guide me through this.
- 1:45God, audacity, and my talent.
- 1:47>> In my lived experience, I've learned
- 1:49that audacity will get you farther than
- 1:51talent alone ever will. A lot of
- 1:53talented people, especially artists or
- 1:55creatives, have huge dreams of creating
- 1:57their best works and sharing them with
- 1:59the world, but end up feeling stuck or
- 2:01overthinking to the point of not
- 2:02creating anything or spreading
- 2:04themselves too thin across too many
- 2:06projects and never finishing any of
- 2:08them. For the longest time, I've had
- 2:09older mentors or even strangers
- 2:11compliment me on how talented I am or
- 2:14how I have a gift of art making, but it
- 2:16took me a long time to understand that
- 2:18growth requires action. And the next
- 2:20step is actually having the audacity to
- 2:22invest in yourself and have the courage
- 2:24to act on your ambitions and dreams.
- 2:26Another way of saying this is being
- 2:28delusional.
- 2:29And if that works for you, that's great,
- 2:31but sometimes trying to be delusional
- 2:33still implies a sense of irrational
- 2:35belief in oneself. So, I think a better
- 2:38way of being delusional is simply by
- 2:40recognizing that you can embody the
- 2:41identity of your ideal self starting
- 2:44right now without anybody's permission
- 2:46and without having to wait for the right
- 2:48time. Another reason to operate from a
- 2:50place of audacity is because it helps
- 2:52you persist and create in spite of
- 2:55perfectionism and overthinking. A lot of
- 2:57talented people are held back by the
- 2:59need to make everything perfect before
- 3:01releasing it out into the world. And of
- 3:03course, all good things take time, but
- 3:05it's healthy to be able to create things
- 3:07without the fear of it being a perfect
- 3:09masterpiece. Building up your audacity
- 3:11is like training a muscle that will also
- 3:14help build your tolerance for rejection.
- 3:16You'll start to see failure or setbacks
- 3:18as necessary steps in the process of
- 3:20getting to where you want to be. Any
- 3:22kind of change that you want to see
- 3:24starts in the present moment. And that
- 3:26is one of the most empowering things to
- 3:28realize because you can constantly edit
- 3:30and rewire your identity every day. I
- 3:32hope that if anything, this video helps
- 3:34to inspire you to trust in your creative
- 3:36vision and to take action even when you
- 3:38don't feel completely ready to believe
- 3:40in your own work. Feel free to write
- 3:42about what's been stopping you from
- 3:44taking the next steps in the comments.
- 3:46And I hope you'll join me on this
- 3:47journey of finding the fun and joy in
- 3:50creating again.
