- 0:00At my daughter's 10th birthday party, my
- 0:01sister announced she's pregnant and
- 0:03asked everyone to toast new life. Her
- 0:05husband set down his plate and said, "I
- 0:06had a vasectomy in 2019." The plate was
- 0:08the cheap paper kind with balloons
- 0:10printed on it, and it had a slice of my
- 0:12daughter's unicorn cake on it. And when
- 0:13Brent set it down on the picnic table,
- 0:15the plastic fork slid off and fell in
- 0:16the grass. I remember that fork. I
- 0:18remember watching it fall because it was
- 0:20the only thing moving in my whole
- 0:21backyard. 28 people were standing in
- 0:23that yard holding red cups of sweet tea
- 0:25and lemonade. 10-year-old girls in party
- 0:27hats. My wife's parents. My mother up
- 0:29from Charlotte. Three of my guys from
- 0:31the shop with their wives. My best
- 0:32friend Jody Hargis and his wife Trina by
- 0:35the cooler. And my little sister Lacy
- 0:36standing on the back steps where she'd
- 0:38climbed up to make her announcement with
- 0:40her cup still raised and her face doing
- 0:41something I'd never seen a face do. It
- 0:43was as if the happiness was still on it,
- 0:45but someone had cut the wire behind it.
- 0:47Brent didn't raise his voice. That was
- 0:48the worst part. He said it the way you'd
- 0:50mention the weather. "I had a vasectomy
- 0:52in 2019." Then he looked at my sister,
- 0:54and he looked at Jody, and he picked up
- 0:55his car keys from the picnic table and
- 0:57walked around the side of the house to
- 0:58the driveway. Nobody stopped him. Nobody
- 1:00said anything. We heard his car start.
- 1:02We heard it back out. Harper was
- 1:03standing next to me in a paper crown
- 1:05that said "Birthday Girl." She tugged on
- 1:07my shirt and whispered, "Daddy, what's a
- 1:09vasectomy?" I didn't answer her. I was
- 1:10watching my sister's face, and I was
- 1:12watching it break, and I was watching my
- 1:14mother and my wife look at each other
- 1:15across the yard in a way I didn't like
- 1:17at all. It would take me three months, a
- 1:19box of unopened mail, a Christmas card,
- 1:21and a two-hour drive to a parking lot in
- 1:23Raleigh to find out that the man who
- 1:24just walked out of my daughter's
- 1:25birthday party knew exactly what he was
- 1:27doing and had known for weeks before my
- 1:29sister did. My name is Travis Gentry.
- 1:31I'm 39. I own a marine engine repair
- 1:33shop on the river in Wilmington, North
- 1:35Carolina. Four bays and six guys and a
- 1:37yellow lab who sleeps under the parts
- 1:39counter. My wife Missy and I have been
- 1:41married 12 years. Harper is our only
- 1:43kid, and she runs the house. Lacy is my
- 1:45little sister, five years younger. Our
- 1:47dad died of a stroke in 2015 when she
- 1:49was 23, and I walked her down the aisle
- 1:51the next year in a church in Charlotte.
- 1:52And when I put her hand in Brent
- 1:54Satterfield's, I I him what every big
- 1:56brother tells every groom. I told him if
- 1:57he ever hurt her, they'd never find him.
- 1:59He laughed and clapped me on the back
- 2:01and said, "Noted." Brent was easy to
- 2:02like. That's what people always said
- 2:04about him. Easy to like. He sold drugs
- 2:06for a pharmaceutical company, the legal
- 2:07kind, which he joked about every single
- 2:09time anyone asked what he did. He had
- 2:11good teeth and a good golf swing, and he
- 2:13remembered everybody's kids' names. He
- 2:15drove a silver Acura that he washed
- 2:17every Sunday. In 2020, the company gave
- 2:19him a bigger territory based out of the
- 2:20coast, and they moved from Charlotte to
- 2:22Wilmington. Lacey had been managing the
- 2:24front office practice in Charlotte for 6
- 2:26years. She loved that job. She quit it
- 2:28to move. She said there'd be other jobs,
- 2:30and besides, they were going to start a
- 2:31family soon, so it made sense for her to
- 2:33be home. That was 2020. Lacey wanted a
- 2:35baby the way some people want air. She'd
- 2:37wanted one since she was a little girl
- 2:39lining up dolls on the couch. For the
- 2:40first year in Wilmington, they were
- 2:42trying, she said. Then 2 years, then 3.
- 2:44Every month she'd buy a test, and every
- 2:46month she'd cry in the bathroom. In
- 2:472022, she went to a fertility specialist
- 2:49by herself. She paid for it out of the
- 2:51savings she'd built up at the dental
- 2:52office because Brent said it was a waste
- 2:54of money. Blood work, ultrasounds, a dye
- 2:56test that she said felt like being
- 2:58stabbed with a hot coat hanger. $3,800.
- 3:01Everything came back normal. The doctor
- 3:02said the next step was to test her
- 3:04husband. Brent said no. He said, "I'm
- 3:06fine. It's you stressing about it.
- 3:07Relax, and it'll happen." I know all
- 3:09this because one night in 2023, she sat
- 3:11on my back porch with a glass of wine
- 3:13she didn't drink and cried for 2 hours.
- 3:15She said, "Maybe it's me. Maybe there's
- 3:17something they can't find. Maybe I'm
- 3:18just not supposed to be anybody's mom."
- 3:20I told her to make Brent get tested. She
- 3:22said she'd asked him nine times. She
- 3:24said he got angry the ninth time. I
- 3:25should have paid more attention to Brent
- 3:27back then. There were signs, the kind
- 3:29you only see in a rearview mirror.
- 3:30Thanksgiving of 2021, we were out on my
- 3:32porch after dinner, the two of us, while
- 3:34the women did dishes, which I'm not
- 3:36proud of, either. Harper was five and
- 3:37had just knocked over a whole gravy
- 3:39boat. Brent watched her through the
- 3:40window, laughing, and then he took a sip
- 3:42of his beer and said, "Kids are a trap,
- 3:43Trav. You know that, right? Best thing
- 3:45that ever happened to you and the end of
- 3:46your life, all at once." I laughed. I
- 3:48thought he was joking. He wasn't smiling
- 3:50when he said it. Another time, at a
- 3:51cookout in 2022, Lacey mentioned the
- 3:54fertility doctor in front of everybody,
- 3:55and Brent squeezed her shoulder and
- 3:57said, "We're letting nature take its
- 3:58course." and changed the subject to the
- 4:00Panthers so fast it gave me whiplash. I
- 4:02remember noticing that. I remember
- 4:04deciding it was none of my business. So,
- 4:06when she stood up on my back steps on
- 4:07May 16th and said she was 10 weeks
- 4:09pregnant, I was the happiest I'd been in
- 4:11years. I'd been at the grill flipping
- 4:12burgers. I set the spatula down and
- 4:14started to walk toward her to hug her. I
- 4:16was halfway across the yard when Brent
- 4:18set down his plate. The party ended the
- 4:19way parties end when something terrible
- 4:21happens. People suddenly remember they
- 4:23have somewhere to be. Missy gathered up
- 4:24the girls and set them up with a movie
- 4:26in the den. My guys from the shop shook
- 4:28my hand without meeting my eyes and
- 4:29left. Jody and Trina left last. Jody
- 4:32stopped in front of me like he wanted to
- 4:33say something, and then Trina took his
- 4:35arm and they went. I found Lacey in
- 4:36Harper's bedroom sitting on the floor
- 4:38between the bed and the wall with her
- 4:40knees pulled up and her face pressed
- 4:41against them. I sat down next to her. We
- 4:43used to do this when she was little and
- 4:44our parents were fighting, sit on the
- 4:46floor where nobody could see us. "What
- 4:47vasectomy?" She said into her knees.
- 4:49"Travis, what vasectomy? You didn't
- 4:51know?" She lifted her head and looked at
- 4:52me like I'd slapped her. "Do you think
- 4:54I'd have spent $4,000 on fertility tests
- 4:56if I knew? Do you think I'd have cried
- 4:58every month for 5 years? Do you think
- 5:00I'd have stood up in your backyard and
- 5:01told everybody?" "No," I said. "No, I
- 5:03don't." "5 years," she whispered. "He
- 5:05let me try for 5 years. He let me think
- 5:07it was me." When I went back to the
- 5:08kitchen, my mother and Missy were
- 5:10standing at the counter wrapping
- 5:11leftover burgers in foil and not
- 5:13talking. When I came in, they both
- 5:14stopped. "What?" I said. Missy put down
- 5:16the foil. "Trav," she said carefully, "a
- 5:18vasectomy is a vasectomy." My mother
- 5:20looked at the floor. That night Lacey
- 5:21slept on our couch. She didn't want to
- 5:23go home. She didn't know if Brent would
- 5:25be there. Around 11:00 her phone started
- 5:26buzzing on the coffee table and wouldn't
- 5:28stop. She held it out to me without a
- 5:29word so I could see. "Who is it? Who is
- 5:31it, Lacey? Is it Jody? I've seen how he
- 5:33looks at you." She typed back, "It's
- 5:35nobody. It's your baby." Three dots.
- 5:37Then, "Can't be. I had a vasectomy. You
- 5:39know what that means. Don't insult me."
- 5:41She turned the phone face down and put a
- 5:42pillow over her head. The next morning,
- 5:44Sunday, Brent moved out. Lacey went to
- 5:46the house to get clothes, and he was
- 5:48loading golf clubs and two suitcases
- 5:50into the Acura. She asked him to stay
- 5:51and talk. He said there was nothing to
- 5:53talk about. Then take a test, she said.
- 5:55They can do it now. There's a blood
- 5:56test. They take my blood and swab your
- 5:58cheek, and it tells you who the father
- 5:59is before the baby's born. Just do it.
- 6:01Just swab your cheek and you'll see. He
- 6:03shut the trunk. I don't need a test,
- 6:04Lacey, he said. I had a vasectomy. I
- 6:06know exactly what that means, even if
- 6:08you don't. He drove off. She stood in
- 6:09the driveway in her slippers. That
- 6:11afternoon, my mother called me from
- 6:12Charlotte. She'd driven home that
- 6:14morning. Travis, she said, and her voice
- 6:15was very quiet. Is it possible? I'm not
- 6:18saying it is. I'm just asking. She's
- 6:19been so unhappy for so long. People do
- 6:21things when they're unhappy. Mom, I'm
- 6:23her mother, she said. I'm allowed to
- 6:25ask. A week later, Harper came home from
- 6:27school and climbed up on a stool at the
- 6:28kitchen island while Missy was making
- 6:30dinner and said, "Is Aunt Lacey a bad
- 6:32person?" Missy put down the knife. "Why
- 6:33would you ask that?" "Kinsley's mom said
- 6:35Aunt Lacey did something bad to Uncle
- 6:37Brent," Harper said. "She said that's
- 6:39why he left. She said it to another mom
- 6:40at pick up and Kinsley told me." Missy
- 6:42looked at me. I was standing in the
- 6:43doorway with my keys still in my hand.
- 6:45"No, baby," Missy said, very carefully.
- 6:48"Aunt Lacey isn't a bad person.
- 6:49Grown-ups are having a hard time right
- 6:51now, and some grown-ups are saying
- 6:52things they don't know anything about."
- 6:54Harper thought about that. Then she
- 6:55said, "Is Uncle Brent a bad person?"
- 6:57Nobody answered her. That night, after
- 6:59Harper was asleep, Missy and I stood in
- 7:01the garage, because it's the only room
- 7:02in our house where you can't be heard
- 7:04from the guest room. She was crying,
- 7:05which she almost never does. "I don't
- 7:07know what to think," she said. "I love
- 7:08her. I want to believe her, but it's not
- 7:10just us anymore, Trav. It's at Harper's
- 7:12camp. It's at the grocery store. If
- 7:14she's lying and we're standing in front
- 7:15of her, then what are we teaching our
- 7:17daughter?" "And if she's telling the
- 7:18truth," I said, "and we don't stand in
- 7:20front of her, what are we teaching her
- 7:21then?" Missy wiped her face with the
- 7:22back of her hand and didn't answer, but
- 7:24the next morning she made Lacey eggs,
- 7:26which she'd stopped doing, and she sat
- 7:28down across from her while she ate them.
- 7:29That night in bed, Missy said, "I love
- 7:31your sister. You know I do, but a man
- 7:33doesn't stand up at a 10-year-old's
- 7:34birthday party and say that unless he's
- 7:36sure." I didn't sleep much. I lay there
- 7:38doing the math over and over. Five years
- 7:40of trying. Vasectomy in 2019. A man
- 7:42who'd refused to be tested nine times.
- 7:45Something didn't add up, but I didn't
- 7:46know what the missing number was. And in
- 7:48the dark, with my wife's back to me, I'm
- 7:49ashamed to say that for about an hour, I
- 7:51wondered. On June 1, Lacy got a letter
- 7:54from Brent's lawyer. She'd hired a
- 7:55lawyer of her own by then, a woman named
- 7:57Wilma Pope, who'd been doing family law
- 7:59in Wilmington for 19 years. Wilma had an
- 8:01office in an old house downtown with
- 8:03creaky floors and a cat named Judge who
- 8:05slept on the radiator. She read Brent's
- 8:07lawyer's letter out loud to Lacy and me
- 8:09at her conference table. Brent had filed
- 8:11his response to Lacy's claim for
- 8:12support. In it, his lawyer wrote that
- 8:14Lacy had engaged in illicit sexual
- 8:16behavior during the marriage, that the
- 8:17pregnancy was proof of it, that Mr.
- 8:19Satterfield had undergone a vasectomy in
- 8:21October 2019, and that under North
- 8:23Carolina law, Lacy was barred from
- 8:25receiving alimony. Is that true? I said.
- 8:27That's the law? Wilma took her glasses
- 8:28off. In North Carolina, she said, if the
- 8:30dependent spouse, the one who needs
- 8:32support, commits what the statute calls
- 8:34illicit sexual behavior, she can be
- 8:36barred from alimony. That means
- 8:37adultery. It's one of the last states
- 8:39where it matters this much. So, if he
- 8:41proves she cheated, I said, she gets
- 8:43nothing. Nothing, Wilma said. And she
- 8:44gave up her career to follow him here.
- 8:46She hasn't worked in six years. Lacy
- 8:48stared at the table. But he has to prove
- 8:49it, Wilma said. A vasectomy isn't proof.
- 8:52It's a claim. And I've read a lot of
- 8:53claims in 19 years. The next week, Brent
- 8:55canceled Lacy's credit cards, both of
- 8:57them, in one afternoon. She found out at
- 8:59the pharmacy when she tried to buy
- 9:00prenatal vitamins and the card was
- 9:02declined in front of a line of people.
- 9:04He stopped paying her car note. He
- 9:05stopped putting money in the joint
- 9:07checking account. He changed the
- 9:08password on the electric bill. She was
- 9:0912 weeks pregnant, throwing up every
- 9:11morning, and she had $900 of her own
- 9:14money left. She moved into our guest
- 9:15room on June 6 with two suitcases and a
- 9:17pillow and the box of saltines she
- 9:19carried everywhere. Missy made the bed
- 9:21for her with the good sheets. Whatever
- 9:22Missy thought about the pregnancy, she
- 9:24didn't say it again. She just made the
- 9:25bed. Three days later, I drove her to
- 9:27her first real obstetrician appointment
- 9:29because Brent had the good car and she
- 9:31didn't want to sit in that waiting room
- 9:32alone with all the couples. I sat in the
- 9:34corner of the exam room facing the wall
- 9:36while they got her set up. and then the
- 9:37doctor turned the screen toward us, and
- 9:39there it was. A flicker, a tiny gray
- 9:41flutter on the black screen, fast as a
- 9:43hummingbird. "That's the heartbeat," the
- 9:44doctor said, "162, perfect." Lacey made
- 9:47a sound I'd never heard her make. I
- 9:49turned around in my chair, and she was
- 9:50crying and laughing at the same time,
- 9:52staring at that flicker like it was the
- 9:54first sunrise in the history of the
- 9:56world. On the way out, at the checkout
- 9:57desk, um she asked the doctor something
- 9:59in a low voice. I wasn't supposed to
- 10:01hear it. "Can a vasectomy fail?" The
- 10:03doctor didn't blink. "Sometimes," she
- 10:04said, "not often. More often if nobody
- 10:06ever checks it. Why do you ask?" Lacey
- 10:08said, "No reason," and paid her co-pay
- 10:10with cash out of her wallet, counting
- 10:12out the bills. On June 3rd, Jody called
- 10:14me at the shop. I heard his voice, and I
- 10:16knew something was wrong. Jody and I
- 10:17have been best friends since 10th grade.
- 10:19We played football together, badly. He
- 10:21was my best man. He's a contractor,
- 10:23kitchens and bathrooms mostly, and in
- 10:24January he'd started a big job for Lacey
- 10:26and Brent, gutting their kitchen down to
- 10:28the studs. He was in that house 5 days a
- 10:30week for 4 months. "I just got served,"
- 10:32he said. "A guy came to my job site and
- 10:34handed me papers. Travis, Brent's suing
- 10:36me." "For what?" "Alienation of
- 10:38affection," he said, "and something
- 10:39called criminal conversation. $250,000.
- 10:42He says I broke up his marriage. He says
- 10:44I'm the father." I sat down hard on a
- 10:46stack of tires. In North Carolina, Wilma
- 10:48explained to me later, a husband can
- 10:50still sue another man for breaking up
- 10:52his marriage. Most states got rid of
- 10:54those laws decades ago. North Carolina
- 10:56didn't. People win them, she said,
- 10:57sometimes for a lot of money. Trina
- 10:59moved out the next day. She took their
- 11:01two boys and went to her sister's house
- 11:02in Leland. She didn't say she believed
- 11:04it. She said she needed to think. That
- 11:06Friday night Jody came by the shop at
- 11:07closing. My guys had gone home. It was
- 11:09just the two of us, and the lab under
- 11:11the counter, and the smell of diesel,
- 11:13and the river going by outside the open
- 11:15bay door. Jody stood in the doorway with
- 11:17his hands in his pockets. "Your family
- 11:18dragged me into this," he said. "That's
- 11:20not fair." "Isn't it? Your sister's
- 11:22husband is telling the whole town I'm
- 11:23sleeping with her. My wife said her
- 11:24sister's with my kids. My insurance
- 11:26company says this isn't covered, so I'm
- 11:28paying a lawyer out of my own pocket.
- 11:29I've got three jobs on hold because
- 11:31people heard." He shook his head. I was
- 11:33in that house four months, Travis. I put
- 11:35in a kitchen. I never touched her. I
- 11:36never even had a conversation with her
- 11:38about anything except tile. I believe
- 11:40you. Do you? He looked at me hard.
- 11:41Because your mother doesn't. I saw her
- 11:43face at the party. I didn't have
- 11:44anything to say to that. He left. I sat
- 11:46in the dark shop for a long time and
- 11:48thought about how one sentence said
- 11:50calmly over a paper plate could knock
- 11:51down three families at once. On June
- 11:5313th, we went to get the rest of Lacy's
- 11:55things from the house. Wilma arranged it
- 11:57with Brent's lawyer. Brent wouldn't be
- 11:59there. A deputy would. It's called a
- 12:00civil standby. When a sheriff's deputy
- 12:02stands there while somebody gets their
- 12:04belongings, so nobody can say anything
- 12:05was stolen and nobody gets hurt. The
- 12:07deputy was a tall, bored man who told me
- 12:10he'd done about a thousand of them in
- 12:11nine years and they were all sad. Lacy
- 12:13went through the closets and drawers and
- 12:15filled trash bags with clothes. She took
- 12:17her grandmother's quilt off the back of
- 12:18the couch. She took her mixing bowls and
- 12:20the cookbook our mom gave her. She stood
- 12:22for a long time in the kitchen Jody had
- 12:24built, white cabinets and gray tile, and
- 12:26touched the counter top. I was in the
- 12:27garage loading boxes into my truck.
- 12:29Brent had stacked everything she'd asked
- 12:31for along the wall, labeled in his neat
- 12:33block capitals, Christmas, books, Lacy
- 12:35photos. Next to them, against the back
- 12:37wall, was a banker's box with a lid. It
- 12:39wasn't on the list. It was labeled
- 12:40INS/Medical. I thought it might be her
- 12:43insurance paperwork, her fertility
- 12:44bills, something she'd need. I opened
- 12:46the lid. It was full of mail, insurance
- 12:48statements, old explanation of benefits
- 12:50forms, a receipt for an MRI on Brent's
- 12:52knee from 2021. Near the top, held
- 12:54together with a rubber band, were three
- 12:56envelopes. They were all from the same
- 12:57place. Cape Fear Urology Associates. All
- 13:00three were addressed to Brent. All three
- 13:02were still sealed. The postmarks said
- 13:03December 2019, March 2020, and June
- 13:062020. I held them in my hand for a long
- 13:08time. Then I carried them into the
- 13:09kitchen and put them on the counter in
- 13:11front of my sister and the deputy. Lacy,
- 13:13I said, these are his. They're still
- 13:14sealed. You need to be the one to
- 13:15decide. She looked at the envelopes. She
- 13:17looked at the deputy. The deputy
- 13:19shrugged and looked at the ceiling,
- 13:20which I've since decided was the kindest
- 13:22thing anybody did that summer. Lacy
- 13:23opened the first one with her thumbnail.
- 13:25It was one page, a form letter with a
- 13:27blank filled in by hand. "Dear Mr.
- 13:29Satterfield, our records indicate that
- 13:31you underwent a vasectomy procedure at
- 13:33our office on October 22nd, 2019. Our
- 13:35records also indicate that you have not
- 13:37yet completed your post-vasectomy semen
- 13:39analysis. This test is necessary to
- 13:41confirm the success of the procedure.
- 13:43Until a semen sample has confirmed the
- 13:45absence of sperm, you should not rely on
- 13:47your vasectomy for contraception. Please
- 13:48call our office to schedule." She opened
- 13:50the second, same letter, second
- 13:52reminder. She opened the third, same
- 13:54letter, final reminder. She read the
- 13:55third one twice. Then she put her hand
- 13:57on the countertop to hold herself up and
- 13:59slid slowly down the front of the
- 14:00cabinets Jody had built and sat on the
- 14:02kitchen floor. "He never checked," she
- 14:04said. "He never even checked. He doesn't
- 14:06know. He doesn't know anything." Wilma
- 14:07Pope read the letters 3 days later in
- 14:09her office with Judge the Cat on the
- 14:11table between us, flicking his tail
- 14:12across the pages. "He never had the
- 14:14test," she said, "which means he never
- 14:16had confirmation, which means he doesn't
- 14:17actually know he's sterile. Nobody
- 14:19knows. Not him, not his doctor, not a
- 14:21judge." "Can a vasectomy just fail?" I
- 14:23said. "It's uncommon," Wilma said, "but
- 14:25yes, most fail early and the test
- 14:27catches it. Some fail years later on
- 14:29their own. The body reconnects what was
- 14:31cut. That's exactly why they send three
- 14:33letters. That's exactly why he should
- 14:34have opened one." She leaned back in her
- 14:36chair. "I'm going to subpoena the
- 14:37urology practice's records for his
- 14:39procedure and his follow-up. His
- 14:40lawyer's going to fight it. We'll have a
- 14:42hearing on temporary support at the end
- 14:43of August. In the meantime, Lacy, you're
- 14:45going to eat and sleep and see your
- 14:47obstetrician and let me do this."
- 14:49Brent's lawyer filed a motion to quash
- 14:50the subpoena in July. The judge allowed
- 14:52part of it, the records about the
- 14:54procedure and the follow-up and nothing
- 14:55else. It was something. It wasn't
- 14:57enough. A missed test didn't prove Brent
- 14:59was the father. It just proved he'd
- 15:00never bothered to find out. By late
- 15:02June, the story was all over Wilmington,
- 15:04not the true one, Brent's. Brent played
- 15:06golf with half the realtors and dentists
- 15:08in town. He told them, with a sad face
- 15:10over beers at the clubhouse, that his
- 15:11wife had gotten pregnant while he'd been
- 15:13fixed for years and that the contractor
- 15:15had been in his house every day. People
- 15:16believed him. Why wouldn't they? Easy to
- 15:18like. A woman Lacy had been friends with
- 15:20since she moved to town unfollowed her
- 15:22on everything. Two of Jody's clients
- 15:24canceled jobs. Somebody left a note on
- 15:26Jody's truck at a job site that said
- 15:27home wrecker in marker. Lacy got hers at
- 15:29the Harris Teeter on Military Cutoff.
- 15:31She was in the cereal aisle when a woman
- 15:33she knew from a book club, the wife of
- 15:35one of Brent's golf partners, saw her,
- 15:36looked at her stomach, and said loud
- 15:38enough for the whole aisle, "I hope
- 15:40you're proud of yourself." Then she
- 15:41pushed her cart away without waiting for
- 15:42an answer. Lacy left her own cart where
- 15:44it was, half full, and walked out to the
- 15:46parking lot and sat in her car and
- 15:48didn't drive for an hour. She told me
- 15:49about it that night very flatly while
- 15:51she peeled an orange. Then she said, "I
- 15:53keep thinking, what if he's right? What
- 15:54if somehow I'm wrong? What if there's
- 15:56something about my own life I don't
- 15:57know?" "You're not wrong," I said. "How
- 15:59do you know?" "Because you're my
- 16:00sister," I said, which wasn't an answer
- 16:02and we both knew it. Brent came by the
- 16:03shop himself the last week of June. I
- 16:05was under a twin diesel in bay three
- 16:07when one of my guys called down, "Hey
- 16:09boss, somebody here for you." I rolled
- 16:11out and there he was, standing in my
- 16:12open bay door in pressed khakis and a
- 16:14quarter zip, sunglasses pushed up on his
- 16:16head like he was stopping by to talk
- 16:18about a fishing trip. "Travis," he said,
- 16:20"got a minute, man to man?" I wiped my
- 16:22hands on a rag and didn't offer to
- 16:23shake. He didn't seem to notice. "Look,"
- 16:25he said, "nobody wants this to drag on.
- 16:27It's ugly for everybody. Your sister,
- 16:29me, Jody, especially Jody. I hear
- 16:31Trina's at her sister's. That's rough."
- 16:32He shook his head like he was sorry
- 16:34about it. "So here's what I'm thinking.
- 16:35Lacy signs a separation agreement,
- 16:37clean. She keeps her car, I pay it off.
- 16:38She waves support. We go our separate
- 16:40ways and I drop the thing with Jody
- 16:42today. That's it. Everybody walks away."
- 16:44I looked at him for a long time. "You're
- 16:45offering to stop ruining my best
- 16:47friend's life," I said, "if my pregnant
- 16:49sister agrees to take nothing." "I'm
- 16:50offering everybody a way out," he said.
- 16:52"That's all. Think about it. Talk to
- 16:53her." He put his sunglasses back on and
- 16:55walked out to his Acura. It was clean
- 16:57enough to see yourself in. I told Lacy
- 16:58that night. She didn't even look up from
- 17:00the baby name book she was pretending to
- 17:01read. "No," she said. And then, a minute
- 17:03later, quieter, "He's scared of
- 17:05something. People who aren't scared
- 17:06don't offer deals." Jody's lawyer had
- 17:08explained the lawsuit to him and he
- 17:10explained it to me on the dock behind
- 17:11the shop one night at the end of June
- 17:13with his head in his hands. To win,
- 17:15Brent didn't have to prove Jody was the
- 17:16father. He had to convince a jury that
- 17:18there'd been a real marriage with real
- 17:20love in it and that Jodie had damaged
- 17:22it. That's all. A jury could decide that
- 17:24on a feeling. They tell me people lose
- 17:25these with nothing but a husband crying
- 17:27on the stand, Jodie said. $250,000,
- 17:30that's my house, Travis. That's my boy's
- 17:32college. That's everything. Let me help
- 17:33with the lawyer, I said. No, Jodie. No,
- 17:36he said again, harder. You've got your
- 17:37sister in your guest room and a baby
- 17:39coming that isn't yours to pay for. I'm
- 17:41not taking your money. He threw a pebble
- 17:42into the river and watched where it went
- 17:44in. I just want somebody to believe me
- 17:46without me having to prove it. I believe
- 17:48you. I know you do, he said. I'm talking
- 17:49about everybody else. My mother drove
- 17:51down from Charlotte the last weekend of
- 17:53June. She sat on our back porch with
- 17:55Lacey and asked to see the letters.
- 17:56Lacey showed her. My mother read all
- 17:58three. Then she put them down and took
- 17:59my sister's face in both her hands like
- 18:01she was 10 years old. I'm sorry, baby,
- 18:03she said. I'm so sorry I asked. I should
- 18:06never have asked. Lacey cried into her
- 18:07shoulder. I went inside and let them
- 18:09have it. Around the middle of July,
- 18:11Lacey felt the baby kick for the first
- 18:12time. We were all at the kitchen table,
- 18:14Missy and Harper and Lacey and me eating
- 18:16takeout from the Thai place. Lacey
- 18:18stopped with her fork halfway to her
- 18:19mouth. Her eyes went wide. She put her
- 18:21other hand flat on her stomach. Oh, she
- 18:23said. Oh, there. Harper was off her
- 18:25chair in a second. Can I feel? Can I?
- 18:27Lacey took my daughter's hand and
- 18:28pressed it flat against her belly.
- 18:29Nothing happened. Then, after maybe 10
- 18:31seconds, Harper's whole face lit up like
- 18:33Christmas. He kicked me, she shrieked.
- 18:35He kicked me, Mom. Feel. Missy
- 18:37hesitated. Then she came around the
- 18:39table and put her hand next to Harper's.
- 18:40I watched her wait. I watched her feel
- 18:42it and I watched something in my wife's
- 18:44face that had been tight for 2 months
- 18:45finally let go. Hi, buddy, Missy said
- 18:47softly to my sister's stomach. Hi there.
- 18:492 weeks later, at her 20-week scan, the
- 18:51technician asked if she wanted to know.
- 18:52Lacey looked at me. I was in the corner
- 18:54chair again, facing the wall until they
- 18:56said I could turn around. She'd asked me
- 18:58to come. Missy had offered, too, and
- 19:00Lacey had said, Next time. I think she
- 19:01wanted one person in that room who'd
- 19:03never doubted her for even an hour and
- 19:05I'm not sure I qualified, but I was the
- 19:06closest she had. Yes, she said. I want
- 19:09to know. It's a boy, the technician said
- 19:11and pointed at the screen and I didn't
- 19:13need her to explain what I was looking
- 19:14at. In the parking lot afterward, Lacy
- 19:16sat in the passenger seat of my truck
- 19:18and called Brent. I could hear it ring
- 19:19through her phone. Four rings,
- 19:21voicemail. His recorded voice, cheerful,
- 19:23the one he used for doctors and nurses.
- 19:25"You've reached Brent Satterfield." She
- 19:26waited for the beep. "It's a boy," she
- 19:28said. "He's healthy. He's yours. I
- 19:30thought you should hear it from me." She
- 19:31hung up and looked straight ahead
- 19:32through the windshield for a long time.
- 19:34"He's never going to call back," she
- 19:35said. He didn't. In July, Jody came by
- 19:37the shop again. It was a Thursday, late
- 19:40after closing. He looked worse than I'd
- 19:41ever seen him. He'd lost weight. He
- 19:42hadn't shaved. "There's something I
- 19:44didn't tell you," he said. "I didn't
- 19:45tell you because I didn't think it
- 19:47mattered, and I didn't want to make it
- 19:48worse for your sister. But I've been
- 19:49thinking about it every night, and now I
- 19:51think it's the only thing that does
- 19:53matter." He sat down on the bench by the
- 19:54tool cabinet. "Tuesday, March 3rd," he
- 19:56said. "I remember because it was my
- 19:58mom's birthday, and I called her from
- 19:59the truck. Lacy was in Charlotte that
- 20:01week visiting your mom. I'd left at
- 20:0211:30 for a supply run, and forgot my
- 20:04tile saw at their house. I came back for
- 20:06it at noon. Brent's car was in the
- 20:07driveway. That was weird, because he's
- 20:09never home on a weekday. I parked on the
- 20:11street, and as I'm walking up, the front
- 20:12door opens and Brent comes out with a
- 20:14woman. What woman? I don't know. Tall,
- 20:16dark hair, 30s maybe. She was laughing.
- 20:18He had his hand on her lower back. She
- 20:20had one of those lanyards around her
- 20:21neck, like a hospital badge, with a blue
- 20:23stripe on it. They're walking toward a
- 20:25white SUV in the driveway, and Brent
- 20:26looks up and sees me standing there on
- 20:28the sidewalk. He looked straight at me,
- 20:30Travis, for maybe 2 seconds. And his
- 20:32face, I've never seen a man's face do
- 20:33that. Then he smiled and waved like
- 20:35nothing, and said, "Hey, Jody, forgot
- 20:37something?" And I said, "My saw." And I
- 20:39went around back and got it and left.
- 20:40"You never told anyone." "It wasn't my
- 20:42business," he said. "I figured she was a
- 20:43drug rep or a nurse he worked with. I
- 20:45figured whatever it was, it was his
- 20:46problem. And then 3 months later, at
- 20:48your daughter's party, he looks right at
- 20:50me while he says it. And then he sues
- 20:51me." I stood there with a rag in my
- 20:53hand. "He picked you on purpose," I said
- 20:55slowly. "Out of everybody, he picked the
- 20:56one person who saw him with somebody
- 20:58else." Jody looked at me. "Now you
- 20:59understand why I can't sleep." That
- 21:01night I told Lacy. She sat at our
- 21:03kitchen table and listened with both
- 21:04hands wrapped around a cup of decaf. "A
- 21:06lanyard with a blue stripe, she said. A
- 21:08hospital badge. Brent's biggest accounts
- 21:10were hospitals. He spent half his week
- 21:12in Raleigh, she said. A big hospital
- 21:14system there. He talked about the
- 21:15purchasing department like they were
- 21:16family. The girls in purchasing, he
- 21:18called them. Then she stopped. She put
- 21:19the cup down. The Christmas box, she
- 21:21said. The one you brought from the
- 21:22garage. Where is it? It was in our
- 21:24attic. I went up and got it. It was full
- 21:26of ornaments wrapped in newspaper and a
- 21:27tangle of lights and at the bottom, a
- 21:29gallon freezer bag of Christmas cards.
- 21:31Because my sister saves every card she's
- 21:33ever gotten. She dumped them out on the
- 21:35kitchen table and went through them one
- 21:36by one. It took 20 minutes. Then she
- 21:38held one up. It was from Christmas 2024.
- 21:40A plain red card with a gold star on it.
- 21:43Inside, in round handwriting, it said,
- 21:45"To my favorite rep, Merry Christmas.
- 21:47Thanks for everything this year. K." On
- 21:49the back of the envelope, there was a
- 21:50return address label, a name, and an
- 21:52apartment complex in Raleigh. Crystal
- 21:54Odom. "I remember this card," Lacy said.
- 21:56"It came to the house addressed just to
- 21:57him. I asked who K was. He said a girl
- 21:59in purchasing who sends everybody cards.
- 22:01He said it was sweet. He put it on the
- 22:03mantel himself." It took me about 30
- 22:04seconds to find Crystal Odom on
- 22:06Facebook. She was 31. She worked in
- 22:08purchasing at a big hospital in Raleigh.
- 22:10Most of her profile was private, but a
- 22:11few posts were public, the way people's
- 22:13posts are when they're happy and want
- 22:15the world to see. The newest public post
- 22:17was from July 19, a photo of an
- 22:19ultrasound printout propped against a
- 22:20vase of flowers. The caption said, "Baby
- 22:22boy coming in November. Our little
- 22:24miracle." Lacy looked at it for a long
- 22:26time. I watched her count on her
- 22:27fingers, the way she used to do math
- 22:29homework at our kitchen table when she
- 22:31was 10. "November," she said. "That
- 22:32means she got pregnant in February.
- 22:34Brent knew in March. Brent knew in March
- 22:36his vasectomy didn't work. Travis, he
- 22:38knew before I did. He stood up at
- 22:39Harper's party already knowing. We took
- 22:41it to Wilma the next morning. She looked
- 22:43at the post on my phone and then at the
- 22:44Christmas card and then she took off her
- 22:46glasses and set them very carefully on
- 22:48the desk. This is very interesting," she
- 22:50said. "And it's not proof. It's a public
- 22:52post about a baby. It doesn't name a
- 22:54father. I can subpoena her to testify at
- 22:56the hearing and I will. But if she
- 22:57doesn't show or she says it's somebody
- 22:59else's, I've got a Christmas card and a
- 23:01guess." I didn't say anything, but
- 23:02driving home I knew I had to see it for
- 23:04myself. Wilma had said the subpoena
- 23:05would take time. Crystal lived in Wake
- 23:07County, so it had to be served there by
- 23:09a process server up in Raleigh, and
- 23:11Brent's lawyer was already filing
- 23:12objections to everything with Wilma's
- 23:14name on it. The hearing was set for
- 23:15August 27th. Every week that went by,
- 23:17Lacey got bigger and Brent's story got
- 23:19further around town, and Jody's phone
- 23:21stayed quiet. I had to know. I needed to
- 23:23see that man with my own eyes, the way
- 23:25Jody had. I left at 6:00 in the morning.
- 23:27Missy was still asleep. I'd left a note
- 23:29on the counter that said Raleigh,
- 23:31engine, back by dinner, and I felt like
- 23:32a liar every mile of I-40, past the
- 23:35tobacco fields and the billboards for
- 23:36personal injury lawyers and the giant
- 23:38peach water tower nobody can explain. I
- 23:40kept telling myself I just wanted to
- 23:42look. I wasn't going to say anything. I
- 23:43wasn't going to do anything. I was going
- 23:45to sit in my truck and look and drive
- 23:46home and then I'd know. I didn't have a
- 23:48plan. I had a thermos and a biscuit and
- 23:50a Christmas card on my passenger seat.
- 23:52On Saturday, August 8th, I told Missy I
- 23:54was going to look at a boat engine in
- 23:55Raleigh, which wasn't exactly a lie
- 23:57because I stopped at a marina on the way
- 23:59home. I drove 2 hours up I-40 and found
- 24:01the apartment complex from the Christmas
- 24:03card. Crystal had posted a picture in
- 24:04the spring of herself by the complex's
- 24:06pool with the sign in the background. It
- 24:08was a nice place. Three-story brick
- 24:10buildings, a fountain, palm trees in
- 24:12pots that had no business being in
- 24:13Raleigh. I parked across from building C
- 24:15and waited. I'd brought a thermos of
- 24:17coffee and a breakfast biscuit I didn't
- 24:19eat. I didn't know what I was waiting
- 24:20for. Maybe nothing. Maybe she'd come out
- 24:22alone and I'd drive home like a fool. At
- 24:249:40, a silver Acura pulled in and
- 24:27parked two spaces from the white SUV I'd
- 24:29seen in her pictures. I knew the car
- 24:30before I saw the man. Brent washes that
- 24:33car every Sunday. It gleamed. He got
- 24:35out, jogged up the stairs to building C,
- 24:37and knocked on a door on the second
- 24:38floor. The door opened. A minute later,
- 24:40he came back down and Crystal Odum came
- 24:42down behind him. She was tall with long
- 24:44dark hair in a ponytail, wearing a
- 24:45sundress, and she was very obviously,
- 24:48very visibly pregnant, 6 months maybe.
- 24:50Her belly pressed against the dress. She
- 24:52was laughing at something he said. At
- 24:53the bottom of the stairs, he stopped and
- 24:55put his hand flat on her belly and
- 24:56leaned down and kissed her. I got out of
- 24:58my truck. I didn't plan to. I told
- 25:00myself all the way up I-40 that I was
- 25:02just going to look, but my legs got me
- 25:04out of the truck and across the parking
- 25:05lot before my brain caught up. Brent, I
- 25:07said. He turned around. He was still
- 25:09holding her hand. I watched him see me
- 25:11and I watched the same thing happen to
- 25:12his face that Jody described. 2 seconds
- 25:14of something naked and cornered, then
- 25:16the smile came back like a garage door
- 25:18coming down. Travis, he said. Hey man,
- 25:20what are you doing in Raleigh? You knew,
- 25:22I said. You knew in March. Crystal
- 25:23looked at me, then at him. Who is this?
- 25:25Nobody. Brent said quickly. Nobody. A
- 25:27guy I know from Wilmington. Get in the
- 25:29car, babe. I'm Lacy's brother, I said.
- 25:30Crystal's face changed. Not to anger, to
- 25:33confusion. She looked at Brent. Lacy's
- 25:35brother, she said slowly. Your wife, the
- 25:36one who was cheating on you with the
- 25:38contractor, the one who got pregnant by
- 25:39her husband, I said. The same month you
- 25:41did, by the same man. Crystal let go of
- 25:43his hand. Brent's mouth opened and
- 25:45closed. For the first time since I'd
- 25:46known him, Brent Satterfield didn't have
- 25:48anything easy to say. You told me she
- 25:50cheated, Crystal said to him. You told
- 25:51me that's why you left. You told me
- 25:53you'd been fixed for years and then she
- 25:55turned up pregnant. Crystal, he said.
- 25:56It's complicated. You told me, she said,
- 25:58that I was the miracle. I didn't stay
- 26:00for the rest of it. I'd seen what I came
- 26:01to see. I walked back to my truck and
- 26:03got in and drove out of that parking lot
- 26:05and in my mirror I could see the two of
- 26:06them standing at the bottom of the
- 26:08stairs with a foot of air between them
- 26:10that hadn't been there 5 minutes before.
- 26:11I made it as far as a rest stop near
- 26:13Benson before I had to pull over. I sat
- 26:15in the truck with the engine running and
- 26:16the air conditioning blasting and called
- 26:18my sister. She's real, I said. She's 6
- 26:20months pregnant. He kissed her belly in
- 26:22a parking lot. Lace, she thinks you
- 26:23cheated. He told her you cheated. There
- 26:25was silence on the line. Then a sound I
- 26:27didn't recognize at first. My sister
- 26:28laughing. Laughing and crying at the
- 26:30same time, the way you do when something
- 26:32you've been terrified of turns out to be
- 26:33true and somehow it's a relief. I'm not
- 26:35crazy, she said. I'm not crazy, Travis.
- 26:38You were never crazy. Brent called her
- 26:40the next night. She put him on speaker
- 26:42at our kitchen table without telling him
- 26:43and motioned for Missy and me to stay
- 26:45quiet. Your brother came to Raleigh, he
- 26:47said. His voice was tight. He came to
- 26:48her home, Lacy. He scared her half to
- 26:50death. If he comes near her again, I'll
- 26:52get a restraining order. I'll call the
- 26:53police. I swear to God." Lacey was very
- 26:56calm. "I'd never heard her that calm in
- 26:57her life. Is she due in November,
- 26:59Brent?" Silence on the line. "Is she due
- 27:01in November? Because that means you knew
- 27:02in March. You knew your vasectomy didn't
- 27:04work. You knew in March and you stood up
- 27:06at Harper's party in May and called me a
- 27:08cheater in front of my whole family."
- 27:09More silence. Then, very quietly, "This
- 27:12isn't something we should talk about
- 27:13without lawyers." He hung up. Lacey set
- 27:15the phone down and folded her hands on
- 27:16the table. Missy reached over and
- 27:18covered them with hers. The hearing on
- 27:19temporary support was on August 27th in
- 27:22a courtroom on the fourth floor of the
- 27:23New Hanover County Courthouse. Wilma had
- 27:25subpoenaed Crystal Odum to testify.
- 27:27She'd also subpoenaed the urology
- 27:28practice's records, the ones the judge
- 27:30had allowed, which showed exactly what
- 27:32the three letters showed. A procedure on
- 27:34October 22nd, 2019. No semen analysis,
- 27:37ever. Lacey sat next to Wilma at the
- 27:39table in a navy maternity dress. She was
- 27:4125 weeks along. I sat in the first row
- 27:43behind her with Missy and my mother.
- 27:45Brent came in with his lawyer and didn't
- 27:46look at us. 10 minutes before the
- 27:48hearing was supposed to start, Brent's
- 27:49lawyer came over to our table and asked
- 27:51to speak to Wilma in the hallway. They
- 27:53were gone for 15 minutes. When Wilma
- 27:55came back, her face was perfectly calm,
- 27:57but she squeezed Lacey's hand under the
- 27:58table so hard I could see her knuckles.
- 28:00When the judge took the bench, Brent's
- 28:02lawyer stood up first. "Your Honor," he
- 28:03said, "in light of certain information
- 28:05that has recently come to my client's
- 28:06attention, Mr. Satterfield withdraws the
- 28:08allegation of illicit sexual behavior
- 28:10for purposes of this hearing." The judge
- 28:12was a woman who'd been on the district
- 28:13court bench for 12 years and had clearly
- 28:15heard everything. She looked over her
- 28:17glasses at Brent. "Recently come to his
- 28:18attention," she said. "Yes, Your Honor."
- 28:20She looked at the records Wilma handed
- 28:22up. She read the three letters. She took
- 28:23her time. Then she looked back at Brent.
- 28:25"Mr. Satterfield," she said, "you told
- 28:27this court under oath in your verified
- 28:29pleading that you had a vasectomy in
- 28:302019 and you implied it made you
- 28:32incapable of fathering a child. You
- 28:34never completed the test your own doctor
- 28:36told you three times you needed before
- 28:37you could rely on it. Do you have
- 28:39anything you'd like to add?" Brent's
- 28:40lawyer put a hand on his arm. Brent
- 28:42shook his head. The judge awarded Lacey
- 28:44post separation support of $2,400 a
- 28:46month starting immediately and ordered
- 28:48Brent to restore her health insurance
- 28:50and her car payment. She found that
- 28:51there was no credible evidence of any
- 28:53illicit sexual behavior by Lacy. And
- 28:55then, before she stood up, she said one
- 28:57more thing. "I'm aware there is a
- 28:58separate civil action pending against a
- 29:00third party in this matter," she said,
- 29:02looking straight at Brent's lawyer.
- 29:03"Council, I'd think very carefully about
- 29:05it." In the hallway afterward, Lacy
- 29:07stood by a window looking down at the
- 29:08river and shook. Missy put her arms
- 29:10around her. My mother put her arms
- 29:11around both of them. I stood a little
- 29:13way off and watched Brent and his lawyer
- 29:15walk to the elevator without looking
- 29:16back. But Brent came back 10 minutes
- 29:18later, alone, without his lawyer. He
- 29:20found us in the parking garage on the
- 29:21second level, where Lacy was trying to
- 29:23get herself up into my truck. He stopped
- 29:25about 10 ft away with his hands in his
- 29:26pockets. He looked tired. For the first
- 29:28time since I'd known him, he looked like
- 29:30an ordinary man. "Lace," he said, "can I
- 29:32just say one thing?" I stepped between
- 29:34them. Lacy put her hand on my arm. "It's
- 29:35okay," she said, "let him." I didn't
- 29:37know, he said, "when I said it, at the
- 29:38party. I swear I didn't know about you.
- 29:40Crystal told me in March she was
- 29:42pregnant and I thought, she's lying. She
- 29:44must be." And then her doctor said these
- 29:45things happen and I thought, "Okay,
- 29:47that's one. One weird thing. It never
- 29:49occurred to me it could happen twice."
- 29:51Lacy looked at him for a long time. "And
- 29:53when it did happen twice," she said,
- 29:54"you had a choice. You could have said,
- 29:56'I'm sorry, I had a secret vasectomy and
- 29:58it failed and I'm in love with someone
- 30:00else.' Or you could stand up in my
- 30:01brother's backyard and call me a cheater
- 30:03so you wouldn't have to pay me a dime."
- 30:05He didn't answer. "You chose the second
- 30:07one, Brent, in front of my niece, on her
- 30:08birthday, and you picked Jody on purpose
- 30:11because he saw you. You knew exactly
- 30:12what you were doing every single step of
- 30:14the way." She turned around and climbed
- 30:15up into my truck, one hand on her
- 30:17stomach, and shut the door. Brent stood
- 30:19there for a second. Then he looked at me
- 30:20like he wanted me to say something,
- 30:22anything, the way men do when they want
- 30:23another man to tell them they're not
- 30:25that bad. I got in and started the
- 30:26engine. Six days later, Brent
- 30:28voluntarily dismissed his lawsuit
- 30:30against Jody. No settlement, no apology,
- 30:32just a one-page notice his lawyer filed
- 30:34with the court. Jody's lawyer emailed it
- 30:35to him and Jody forwarded it to me with
- 30:37no message, just the attachment. Trina
- 30:39came home that weekend with the boys.
- 30:41Jody told me she cried the whole first
- 30:43night and kept apologizing and he told
- 30:44her she had nothing to apologize for and
- 30:46he meant it mostly. The Monday after
- 30:48Jody came by the shop at closing. He
- 30:50brought a six-pack. We sat on the dock
- 30:51behind the shop with our feet hanging
- 30:53over the river and didn't say much for a
- 30:55long time. I'm sorry about what I said,
- 30:57he said eventually, about your family
- 30:58dragging me in. You weren't wrong, I
- 31:00said. We did. No, he said. He did. He
- 31:02dragged us all in and then he looked at
- 31:04me with a grin I hadn't seen since
- 31:05spring. But your sister owes me a new
- 31:07tile saw. I never did use that one
- 31:08again. In September Brent's lawyer
- 31:10contacted Wilma and said his client
- 31:12would provide a cheek swab for a
- 31:13prenatal paternity test voluntarily to
- 31:16avoid the need for a court order. The
- 31:17lab drew Lacy's blood at her
- 31:19obstetrician's office. Brent did his
- 31:20swab at a clinic in Raleigh. The result
- 31:22came by email on a Thursday afternoon.
- 31:24Lacy opened it at our kitchen table. I
- 31:26was standing behind her. Missy was at
- 31:28the stove. Probability of paternity
- 31:3099.9%.
- 31:31Lacy read it once. Then she closed the
- 31:33laptop. I already knew, she said. I just
- 31:36wanted him to have to know it, too. A
- 31:37few days later Lacy got a Facebook
- 31:39message from an account she didn't know.
- 31:41She showed it to me before she answered
- 31:42it. It was from Crystal Odom. I didn't
- 31:44know, it said. I need you to believe
- 31:46that. He told me you'd cheated on him.
- 31:47He told me his marriage was over before
- 31:49we ever met and that you'd gotten
- 31:50pregnant by someone else and that he'd
- 31:52been fixed for years so it couldn't be
- 31:54his and I believed every word because I
- 31:56wanted to. I'm due November 9th. He
- 31:57moved out last week. I don't know what
- 31:59I'm supposed to say to you. I'm sorry.
- 32:01That's all I have. I'm so sorry. Lacy
- 32:02read it three times. Then she typed for
- 32:04a long time and deleted it. Then she
- 32:06typed again. Our boys are going to be
- 32:07brothers, she wrote. A month apart.
- 32:09Maybe someday they should know each
- 32:10other. I don't know, either. Take care
- 32:12of yourself. She sent it and set the
- 32:13phone down and put both hands on her
- 32:15belly and didn't say anything for the
- 32:16rest of the evening. Missy turned off
- 32:18the stove and came over and sat down
- 32:20next to my sister and took her hand.
- 32:21Lace, she said. I'm sorry for what I
- 32:23said at the party, for what I thought. I
- 32:25should have known you better than that.
- 32:26Lacy looked at her for a long moment and
- 32:28then put her head on Missy's shoulder
- 32:29and I went out to the porch because some
- 32:31things are not for brothers. That night
- 32:33at dinner Harper put down her fork and
- 32:34said, Daddy, can I have my birthday
- 32:36party over? We looked at her. "Mine got
- 32:38ruined," she said reasonably. "I want a
- 32:39do-over with cake and Aunt Lacey can
- 32:41make her announcement again and this
- 32:42time everybody can clap." So, on
- 32:44Saturday, September 26th, we did it
- 32:46again. Same backyard, same picnic table,
- 32:48same unicorn cake because Harper
- 32:50insisted. Missy's parents came. My
- 32:52mother came down from Charlotte. Jody
- 32:54and Trina came with their boys. Six
- 32:5610-year-old girls in paper crowns ran
- 32:57screaming through the sprinkler even
- 32:59though it was September. Jody came up
- 33:00the driveway carrying a gift bag. He
- 33:02handed it to Lacey without a word.
- 33:04Inside was a little square of the same
- 33:06gray tile he'd put in her kitchen,
- 33:07sanded smooth on the edges with a felt
- 33:09pad glued to the bottom, a coaster. On
- 33:11the back, in Sharpie, he'd written, "For
- 33:13the baby's first bottle from the
- 33:14contractor." Lacey laughed so hard she
- 33:17had to sit down. When the cake was cut,
- 33:19Harper climbed up on the back steps
- 33:20herself and banged a plastic fork
- 33:22against her cup until everybody was
- 33:23quiet. "My aunt has an announcement,"
- 33:25she said very seriously and climbed
- 33:27down. Lacey stood up on the steps. She
- 33:29was 29 weeks pregnant now and she had to
- 33:31hold the railing. She looked out at the
- 33:33yard, at all of us, and for a second I
- 33:35saw her face start to do the thing it
- 33:37did in May and then it didn't. "I'm
- 33:38having a baby boy," she said, "in
- 33:40December and I'd like everybody to raise
- 33:41a glass to new life." Twenty-some red
- 33:43cups went up in the air. "To new life,"
- 33:45everybody said. And this time, nobody
- 33:47set down their plate.
