At Midnight, My DIL Texted: "Your Place Is Closer to Pearson — I'm Dropping Off My 3 Kids in an H... — Transcript

- 0:00The text came in at 11:58 on a Tuesday
- 0:03night, 2 minutes before December tipped
- 0:05into Wednesday, and I remember staring
- 0:08at it for a long moment before I truly
- 0:11understood what I was reading.
- 0:13"Your place is closer to Pearson. We're
- 0:16catching a 6:00 a.m. flight. I'm
- 0:18dropping the kids off in an hour."
- 0:20That was it. No question mark. No,
- 0:24"Would you mind?" Just a statement of
- 0:26fact from my daughter-in-law, Shannon,
- 0:28as though I were a locker at the airport
- 0:30she'd pre-booked online.
- 0:32I am 62 years old. My name is Pamela
- 0:35Hunt, and I have lived alone in my condo
- 0:38in Etobicoke since my husband, Roy,
- 0:40passed away 4 years ago. I have a
- 0:43pension from 30 years teaching at an
- 0:45elementary school in Mississauga. I have
- 0:48a balcony garden that takes up most of
- 0:50my Saturday mornings. I have a life that
- 0:52I built carefully, piece by piece, after
- 0:55grief nearly disassembled me.
- 0:57And I have one son, Jeremy, who I love
- 1:00completely, and who has, over the past 3
- 1:03years, allowed his wife to slowly treat
- 1:05me like a household appliance.
- 1:08I put my reading glasses on the
- 1:09nightstand. I sat on the edge of the bed
- 1:11and read Shannon's message a second
- 1:13time, then a third. The kids she was
- 1:15referring to were Grayson, 9, Olivia, 7,
- 1:19and Leo, 3.
- 1:21Good kids, genuinely. Shannon was using
- 1:23them as luggage.
- 1:25I typed back, "I wasn't expecting
- 1:27anyone. Tonight doesn't work for me."
- 1:30Her reply arrived in under 30 seconds.
- 1:33"Jeremy has your spare key. We'll let
- 1:35ourselves in. Kids will be asleep. You
- 1:38won't even notice them."
- 1:40I set the phone down on the comforter. I
- 1:42breathed in through my nose, out through
- 1:45my mouth, the way I'd taught a hundred
- 1:47fidgety 8-year-olds to do before a big
- 1:50test. Then I picked the phone back up
- 1:52and called the concierge desk
- 1:54downstairs.
- 1:56Chad answered.
- 1:57He works the overnight shift on
- 1:59weekdays, and we have a comfortable,
- 2:02easy rapport built over 4 years of me
- 2:05being the resident who occasionally
- 2:07brings down a plate of butter tarts at
- 2:09Christmas.
- 2:10Chad, it's Pamela Hunt, 1107. I need to
- 2:14put a note on my unit tonight. No one is
- 2:17to be buzzed up without my direct verbal
- 2:19confirmation, not under any
- 2:20circumstances.
- 2:22My son may have a key, but he cannot use
- 2:24the elevator without clearance from me
- 2:26first.
- 2:27Absolutely, Ms. Hunt. I'll put it in the
- 2:30system right now.
- 2:32Thank you.
- 2:33And tomorrow morning, first thing, I'd
- 2:35like to speak with building management
- 2:38about changing my lock cylinder.
- 2:40I heard him typing. I'll leave a message
- 2:43for the super. He's in by 8.
- 2:45I thanked him, hung up, and did not
- 2:48reply to Shannon again that night. I put
- 2:50my glasses back on, picked up the novel
- 2:53I'd been reading, and finished the
- 2:54chapter.
- 2:56I slept reasonably well, all things
- 2:58considered. The next morning, I was on
- 3:00my second cup of coffee when my phone
- 3:03began vibrating steadily on the kitchen
- 3:05counter.
- 3:06Jeremy's name cycling across the screen.
- 3:09I let it ring twice, then answered.
- 3:12Mom. His voice was strained, slightly
- 3:15too loud, the way it gets when Shannon
- 3:17is standing close by. We're downstairs.
- 3:19Chad won't let us up.
- 3:21I know. I asked him not to.
- 3:24A beat of silence. What? Mom, we have a
- 3:26flight in 3 hours. The kids need to be
- 3:29settled.
- 3:30They need to be settled somewhere you
- 3:32arranged in advance with someone's
- 3:34consent, I said. I kept my voice level.
- 3:38I was not angry. I had moved past anger
- 3:41sometime around midnight. What I felt
- 3:43that morning was something much calmer
- 3:45and considerably more durable.
- 3:48Shannon said she texted you.
- 3:50She informed me.
- 3:52There's a difference.
- 3:53I heard Shannon's voice in the
- 3:54background, sharp and low. Jeremy came
- 3:57back on the line.
- 3:59Can you please just come down? Shannon
- 4:01wants to talk.
- 4:03The lobby of my building has a marble
- 4:05floor and tall windows that face the
- 4:08parking circle.
- 4:09When the elevator opened, I could see
- 4:11them from across the atrium. Shannon was
- 4:14standing near the concierge desks in a
- 4:16puffer vest and leather carry-on boots,
- 4:19the kind of outfit that announces a
- 4:21holiday. Grayson and Olivia were sitting
- 4:24on a bench near the door, earbuds in,
- 4:26looking at their tablets.
- 4:29Leo was asleep across Jeremy's shoulder,
- 4:31one small fist curled against his
- 4:33father's collar.
- 4:35Jeremy saw me first. He looked relieved,
- 4:37then sheepish.
- 4:39Shannon turned around and her expression
- 4:42did something complicated before
- 4:44settling into something smooth and
- 4:46reasonable.
- 4:47She was very good at reasonable when
- 4:50there was an audience.
- 4:52"Pamela," she said.
- 4:54"I'm sorry if my message last night was
- 4:56abrupt.
- 4:57We've been planning this trip to Tulum
- 4:58for months.
- 5:00The whole point was the kids could stay
- 5:02with you since you're practically at the
- 5:04airport."
- 5:05"You're 40 minutes from the airport,
- 5:06Shannon. I'm 35.
- 5:09That's not practically at the airport."
- 5:12Her jaw tightened slightly.
- 5:14"The point is, we thought this would be
- 5:16easier for everyone.
- 5:18You thought it would be easier for you,"
- 5:20I said. "You didn't ask me. You told me
- 5:23at midnight."
- 5:24Jeremy shifted Leo on his shoulder.
- 5:27"Mom, it was a bad call on our part,
- 5:28okay? We get it.
- 5:31But we're here now and the kids are here
- 5:33and our flight
- 5:34is your responsibility," I finished for
- 5:36him. I looked at my son directly. He had
- 5:39good eyes, Jeremy. He got them from Roy.
- 5:42"I love you. I love these three.
- 5:44But I am not available today. I made no
- 5:46agreement and I will not be walked into
- 5:49one."
- 5:50Shannon's voice dropped about 15
- 5:52degrees. "So, you're just going to let
- 5:54us miss a nonrefundable trip?"
- 5:57"I'm going to let you solve a problem
- 5:59you created," I said. "There are hotel
- 6:02kids clubs near the airport. There are
- 6:04licensed drop-in child care services in
- 6:06the city. There is care.com. I looked at
- 6:10her steadily. You have options, Shannon.
- 6:13You simply preferred the free one.
- 6:15She stared at me for a moment. Then she
- 6:17turned to Jeremy.
- 6:19Can you talk to your mother, please?
- 6:22Jeremy looked at me. I looked at him. He
- 6:25had known me for 34 years, and he
- 6:27recognized the expression on my face.
- 6:30He had not seen it very often, but he
- 6:32knew what it meant.
- 6:34We'll figure something out, he said
- 6:35quietly. It wasn't clear if he was
- 6:38talking to Shannon or to me.
- 6:41I kissed Leo on the top of his sleeping
- 6:43head. I waved to Grayson and Olivia, who
- 6:46waved back cheerfully, unbothered. Then
- 6:49I walked back to the elevator.
- 6:51Chad gave me a small nod as I passed his
- 6:53desk. I smiled at him and pressed the
- 6:56button for 11.
- 6:57Back upstairs, I made a third cup of
- 7:00coffee and stood at the balcony door,
- 7:03watching the city come alive in the gray
- 7:05December morning. The condo across the
- 7:08way had its Christmas lights still on
- 7:10from the night before. Little white
- 7:12points against the concrete. I thought
- 7:15about Roy, about how he had always said
- 7:18that the most useful thing a person
- 7:20could do was know exactly where their
- 7:22property lines were.
- 7:24Not to be territorial, but to be clear.
- 7:27He was a surveyor for 31 years. He meant
- 7:30it practically, and he meant it about
- 7:32people.
- 7:33I missed him every single day.
- 7:35But I was beginning to understand on a
- 7:37cellular level why he had been so
- 7:39careful never to let anyone mistake his
- 7:42kindness for open access.
- 7:44Three days passed before Jeremy called
- 7:47again. Shannon did not call at all.
- 7:50They had, as it turned out, booked a
- 7:52last-minute spot at a licensed child
- 7:54care facility near the airport for two
- 7:57of the kids, and dropped Leo with
- 7:59Shannon's sister in Brampton. The trip
- 8:02to Tulum had apparently gone ahead
- 8:03without incident. I knew this because
- 8:06Grayson mentioned it when Jeremy finally
- 8:08brought the kids over on Sunday
- 8:10afternoon just to visit, no agenda.
- 8:14It was a quiet visit. Jeremy and I sat
- 8:17at the kitchen table with tea while the
- 8:18kids watched a movie in the living room.
- 8:21Shannon had not come. I didn't ask about
- 8:24it.
- 8:25"She's annoyed." Jeremy said, wrapping
- 8:27both hands around his mug.
- 8:30"I know."
- 8:31"She thinks you did it to make a point."
- 8:34"I did it because the answer was no."
- 8:37I topped up his cup from the pot. "Those
- 8:39are different things."
- 8:41He was quiet for a moment. "You really
- 8:43had the locks changed?"
- 8:45"I did. Building maintenance came the
- 8:47same morning." I set the teapot down.
- 8:50"Jeremy, your father gave you a key to
- 8:52this unit 4 years ago because we both
- 8:54thought you might need it in an
- 8:56emergency.
- 8:57A burst pipe, a fall, that kind of
- 9:00thing." I looked at him. "It was never
- 9:02intended as Shannon's standing
- 9:04permission to use my home as she sees
- 9:07fit."
- 9:08He rubbed a hand along his jaw. He
- 9:10looked tired in the way that had nothing
- 9:12to do with sleep. "I know."
- 9:15"I'm not sure you do." I said gently.
- 9:18"Because if you knew, you would have
- 9:19told her that before she sent me that
- 9:22message."
- 9:23He didn't argue. He picked up his mug.
- 9:25Outside, Leo shrieked happily about
- 9:28something in the living room, and we
- 9:31both turned toward the sound
- 9:32reflexively, and I felt that particular
- 9:35mix of love and grief and complicated
- 9:37hope that seems to come with getting
- 9:39older and watching the people you made
- 9:42stumble through their own lives.
- 9:45We didn't resolve anything over tea, but
- 9:47it was an honest conversation, which is
- 9:50more than we'd had in some time.
- 9:52The financial piece came later that same
- 9:55week. I am not a petty person, and I
- 9:58want to be understood on this point.
- 10:00What I did, I did calmly and
- 10:03deliberately after sitting with a yellow
- 10:04legal pad and writing out the numbers.
- 10:07Over the past 2 and 1/2 years, I had
- 10:10been paying the monthly fee for Jeremy
- 10:13and Shannon's Costco membership because
- 10:15Shannon had mentioned once that they
- 10:18were stretched thin after a renovation.
- 10:21I had been paying for the kids skating
- 10:23lessons at the community rink.
- 10:25$68 a month, which adds up. I had lent
- 10:28Jeremy $800 in the spring,
- 10:31interest-free, which had never been
- 10:33repaid or mentioned again.
- 10:35I had covered two months of their Rogers
- 10:37bill when, as Shannon put it, things
- 10:40were tight.
- 10:42I sat with that legal pad for a long
- 10:44time.
- 10:45The renovation in question had included
- 10:47new hardwood floors throughout and a
- 10:50custom kitchen island with quartz
- 10:52countertops. I'd seen pictures on
- 10:54Shannon's Instagram. The trip to Tulum
- 10:57had been 10 days at an all-inclusive
- 10:59resort that started, I happen to know
- 11:02from a quick search,
- 11:04at roughly $400 per night Canadian.
- 11:08Things had evidently not been tight for
- 11:10some time.
- 11:11I called my bank and removed Jeremy's
- 11:13name from the secondary access I'd
- 11:16granted him on one of my savings
- 11:18accounts.
- 11:19Another leftover from the uncertain
- 11:21first year after Roy died, when Jeremy
- 11:23had insisted in case something happened
- 11:26to me.
- 11:27I canceled my payment details from the
- 11:29Costco membership. I sent Jeremy a short
- 11:32e-transfer for $68 with a note that
- 11:35read, "Last skating payment. Please set
- 11:38up your own billing going forward."
- 11:41He called that evening.
- 11:43"Mom, did something get canceled on the
- 11:45Costco card?"
- 11:47"I removed my payment. I should have
- 11:49done that a while ago."
- 11:51A pause. "And the skating?"
- 11:54"I sent you what I owed for this month.
- 11:56After this, it's yours to manage."
- 11:59Another pause, longer this time. When he
- 12:02spoke again, he sounded more confused
- 12:04than upset. "Shannon's going to think"
- 12:07"Shannon can think what she likes," I
- 12:09said. "I'm simplifying my accounts,
- 12:11Jeremy. That's all." I kept my voice
- 12:14pleasant because I wasn't punishing him.
- 12:16Punishment implies emotion. This was
- 12:19bookkeeping.
- 12:21He said, "Okay." He sounded like he was
- 12:23processing something.
- 12:25Shannon sent me exactly one text after
- 12:28that. "Cutting off your grandchildren's
- 12:30skating lessons is really something,
- 12:32Pamela."
- 12:34I read it twice, put the phone face down
- 12:36on the counter, and went back to the
- 12:38soup I was making. I had been Pamela to
- 12:41her for 3 years, deployed with a
- 12:43particular edge when she wanted to
- 12:45signal that she saw me as a peer rather
- 12:48than a parent, an equal she was choosing
- 12:51to deal with rather than family she owed
- 12:53consideration. It was meant to diminish.
- 12:56I had let it work for too long.
- 12:59I did not reply.
- 13:01January was quiet. The kids came over
- 13:03two Sundays in a row, just Jeremy and
- 13:06them, and we made pancakes and played
- 13:08Uno, and I helped Olivia with a book
- 13:10report on Charlotte's Web. It was
- 13:12genuinely lovely. Whatever Shannon was
- 13:15doing with her feelings about me, she
- 13:17was keeping the kids out of it, and I
- 13:20gave her credit for that.
- 13:22It was the second week of February when
- 13:24I ran into Shannon's mother, Rita, at
- 13:27the Loblaws near my building. We'd met a
- 13:30handful of times over the years at
- 13:32birthday parties and one Christmas
- 13:34dinner that I remembered as somewhat
- 13:36tense. She was a perfectly pleasant
- 13:39woman who seemed on that occasion as
- 13:42uncertain of Shannon as the rest of us.
- 13:45We made small talk in the produce
- 13:46section. She asked after me. I said I
- 13:49was well. There was a brief, significant
- 13:52pause in which we both looked at the
- 13:54avocados.
- 13:56Shannon mentioned there was some
- 13:57friction,
- 13:58Rita said carefully.
- 14:01"There was a misunderstanding," I said
- 14:03equally carefully. "I think it's sorting
- 14:05itself out."
- 14:07Rita nodded slowly. She picked up an
- 14:09avocado, set it down. "She does that,"
- 14:12she said quietly, more to herself than
- 14:14to me. She assumes everyone's going to
- 14:17catch up eventually.
- 14:19I didn't respond to that, but I thought
- 14:21about it on the walk home.
- 14:23By March, something had shifted. I
- 14:26noticed it in small ways first. Shannon
- 14:28texted me directly one afternoon to ask
- 14:31what the kids should bring if they came
- 14:33to stay over. Not if, but what. She used
- 14:36a tone that was specific and practical.
- 14:39Not warm, exactly, but not the
- 14:41particular coldness she'd been
- 14:42employing, either. I answered her
- 14:44questions.
- 14:46We made arrangements for the following
- 14:48Saturday.
- 14:50The Saturday went well. Shannon did not
- 14:52come. She and Jeremy had a dinner thing,
- 14:55a genuine one, and the kids stayed over,
- 14:58and we watched movies, and I made
- 15:00popcorn on the stovetop the old way, and
- 15:03Leo fell asleep on the couch, and
- 15:05Grayson carried his little brother to
- 15:07the pullout bed in the living room with
- 15:09tremendous seriousness, like it was his
- 15:12most important job, and I stood in the
- 15:14kitchen doorway and felt something
- 15:17settle in my chest.
- 15:19In April, Shannon called me. An actual
- 15:21phone call, not a text, which was
- 15:23unusual enough that I sat down when I
- 15:26saw her name.
- 15:27"I owe you an apology," she said. She
- 15:30said it quickly, the way people do when
- 15:33they've been rehearsing and are
- 15:34determined to get it out before they
- 15:36lose the nerve.
- 15:37The thing in December was not okay. I
- 15:40know that. I think I've been treating
- 15:42your generosity like a given for a long
- 15:44time, and that wasn't right."
- 15:47I let the silence sit for a moment. Not
- 15:50cruelly, just to give the words room.
- 15:53"Thank you for saying that," I said.
- 15:55"Jeremy and I have been talking." A
- 15:57pause. "A lot, actually."
- 16:00"Good," I said.
- 16:02There was another silence, and then she
- 16:03said, more quietly, "I want this to be
- 16:06different, Pamela. I'd like to try."
- 16:10"So would I," I told her, and I meant
- 16:12it.
- 16:13I am not in the business of holding
- 16:14grudges. I never have been. Roy used to
- 16:17say I had a long fuse and a clean burn.
- 16:20Once something was done, it was done and
- 16:23I moved on without residue.
- 16:25What I needed was not for Shannon to
- 16:26grovel. I just needed her to understand
- 16:29that my home was my home. My time was my
- 16:32time and my kindness was not a renewable
- 16:34resource she could draw on indefinitely
- 16:37without asking.
- 16:39The spare key, for what it's worth, has
- 16:41not been reissued.
- 16:43Jeremy understands. He's never brought
- 16:45it up.
- 16:46On a Wednesday evening in May, I sat on
- 16:48my balcony in the first genuinely warm
- 16:51evening of the season, a glass of
- 16:53Riesling on the patio table, the CN
- 16:55Tower pink in the evening light across
- 16:58the water. My phone buzzed. A photo from
- 17:01Grayson sent to my number directly.
- 17:04He'd finally gotten his own device, a
- 17:06right of passage I'd apparently been
- 17:08informed about while the skating fees
- 17:10were rearranged. The photo was of a
- 17:13crayon drawing he'd made at school. A
- 17:16woman with gray hair standing in front
- 17:18of a building. Underneath in uneven
- 17:20letters, Grandma's Place.
- 17:22I looked at it for a long time.
- 17:25Then I saved it to my camera roll, took
- 17:27a sip of my wine and watched the light
- 17:29change over the city. It was quiet. It
- 17:32was mine and no one was going to walk
- 17:34into it uninvited ever again.
- 17:37I have thought about what I would say to
- 17:39someone in a similar situation, someone
- 17:42who has spent years absorbing the weight
- 17:44of their family's convenience and
- 17:46calling it love.
- 17:48I would say this, there is a difference
- 17:50between being available and being used
- 17:53and the line between them is something
- 17:55only you can draw. I waited too long to
- 17:58draw mine.
- 18:00When I finally did, I expected it to
- 18:01feel like loss. Instead, it felt like
- 18:04coming home to a house where all the
- 18:07windows were open and the air was clean.
- 18:09Setting that boundary cost me some
- 18:11difficult weeks and one very tense lobby
- 18:14conversation.
- 18:16What it gave me back was everything
- 18:17else.
