  1. 0:00And we've also seen devastation across
  2. 0:02the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. Our
  3. 0:04understanding is that at least 13 people
  4. 0:06have been killed in that large-scale
  5. 0:08Russian missile and drone strike on
  6. 0:10Kyiv. Let's cross over to the Ukrainian
  7. 0:12capital. My colleague, our correspondent
  8. 0:14Sarah Rainsford, joins us now. A
  9. 0:16devastating night for the Ukrainian
  10. 0:18capital, Sarah.
  11. 0:21>> Yeah, Kasia, a really difficult night
  12. 0:23and a and a deadly one, as you say. At
  13. 0:25the moment, we know that 13 people have
  14. 0:26been killed and there are dozens of
  15. 0:28people who've been injured as well. And
  16. 0:30one site here in the capital, a
  17. 0:32residential building, a block of flats,
  18. 0:35has been very badly damaged, partially
  19. 0:37destroyed, and rescuers there are still
  20. 0:39looking for people, as we understand it,
  21. 0:41underneath the rubble of that building.
  22. 0:42So, a really tough night. There was some
  23. 0:46warning that it was coming because
  24. 0:47President Zelenskyy yesterday
  25. 0:49let people here know that there was
  26. 0:51intelligence that Russia was preparing
  27. 0:53for a large-scale attack. What that
  28. 0:55means is that Ukraine could see that
  29. 0:57Russian bomber planes and and its jets
  30. 1:00were being with missiles
  31. 1:02ready to launch at Ukraine. So, lots of
  32. 1:05people here were already underground, on
  33. 1:06the metro or in shelters,
  34. 1:09to seek shelter, to make sure that they
  35. 1:11were safe through the night. But, of
  36. 1:12course, that doesn't make it any less
  37. 1:13devastating. The capital, the center of
  38. 1:16the of the capital, came under attack.
  39. 1:19It's not far away. I can see a plume of
  40. 1:21gray smoke in that direction. I think
  41. 1:22that's uh well, certainly it's from last
  42. 1:24night's attack. I'm not sure what the
  43. 1:26building itself is. There's another huge
  44. 1:28cloud of smoke just in the other
  45. 1:29direction as well, from last night's
  46. 1:31attacks. So, our team here saw multiple
  47. 1:34fires last night and heard at least 10
  48. 1:37what was described as significant
  49. 1:38strikes last night. Throughout the
  50. 1:40night, the buildings here were shaking.
  51. 1:42You know, this was a really big deal for
  52. 1:44Ukrainians. And as I say, it was deadly
  53. 1:46for so far 13 people here in the
  54. 1:48capital.
  55. 1:50>> Sarah, until now, we had been seeing
  56. 1:53with Ukraine's increased drone
  57. 1:55capabilities a shift in the direction of
  58. 1:58travel when it comes to this grueling
  59. 2:00war. What kind of setback does last
  60. 2:04night's attacks mean for the Ukrainians?
  61. 2:09>> I think as far as Ukrainians are
  62. 2:11concerned, it shows that nothing has
  63. 2:13changed in the sense that these massive
  64. 2:15these large-scale attacks do happen
  65. 2:17periodically every few weeks. Russia
  66. 2:20prepares for them, it gets its missiles
  67. 2:21and its drones ready and it launches
  68. 2:23them and Ukraine, as it makes the point
  69. 2:26multiple times, is now struggling to
  70. 2:28intercept those missiles because it
  71. 2:29doesn't have enough of the weaponry that
  72. 2:31it needs to do that. So, again, the call
  73. 2:33has gone out for more support for its
  74. 2:35air defenses here in Ukraine. So, that's
  75. 2:37one part, but certainly yes, Ukraine
  76. 2:39with its long-range drones has been
  77. 2:41striking targets inside Russia itself
  78. 2:43and also in Crimea, the the peninsula
  79. 2:46that Russia annexed illegally 12 years
  80. 2:49ago from Ukraine, targeting sites there.
  81. 2:51And that is part, as Ukraine sees it, of
  82. 2:53an attempt to really ramp up the
  83. 2:56pressure on Vladimir Putin to force him
  84. 2:58to come to the negotiation table to talk
  85. 3:00about peace because at this point
  86. 3:02Ukraine has been saying for a couple of
  87. 3:03months now it wants to talk peace, it
  88. 3:05wants to end this war through
  89. 3:07negotiations, but sees no sign that
  90. 3:09Vladimir Putin is ready for that. And I
  91. 3:11think as far as Ukraine is concerned,
  92. 3:12last night was pretty clear evidence
  93. 3:15that he wants to continue fighting this
  94. 3:17war his way and that includes these very
  95. 3:19large-scale strikes which are now
  96. 3:20hitting the center of of Ukraine's
  97. 3:23capital.
  98. 3:24>> Sarah, to you and the team as always,
  99. 3:26many thanks. Sarah Rainsford there in
  100. 3:28the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.
