  2. 0:02first person to play golf on the moon
  3. 0:0450 years ago on the apollo 14 mission
  4. 0:06from january 31st to february 9
  5. 0:091971. shepard a lover of golf who spent
  6. 0:13the latter years of his life in pebble
  7. 0:15beach
  8. 0:15engineered his own six iron with the
  9. 0:17help of a houston golf pro
  10. 0:19from a retractable telescopic aluminum
  11. 0:21and teflon shaft
  12. 0:23usually used to collect rock and dust
  13. 0:25samples on the lunar surface
  14. 0:27the shaft was manipulated to add a
  15. 0:29wilson clubhead shepherd could use to
  16. 0:31hit the golf ball into space
  17. 0:32once his mission was complete the
  18. 0:35modified club fit in a small bag folded
  19. 0:37along its five breaks
  20. 0:39connected by a piece of string with the
  21. 0:41pull of the internal string all five
  22. 0:42sections of the shaft
  23. 0:44are reconnected and after tying a knot
  24. 0:46the shaft became solid
  25. 0:47resembling a real golf club once the
  26. 0:50mission was complete and no problems
  27. 0:52reported
  28. 0:53shepard was given permission to take the
  29. 0:54first golf swing in space
  30. 0:57because of his bulky and weighted space
  31. 0:58suit the swing was one-handed and a bit
  32. 1:01untraditional but successful nonetheless
  33. 1:04he made contact twice the first shot
  34. 1:06rolled about 40 yards into a crater and
  35. 1:08the second
  36. 1:09sailed approximately 200 yards after the
  37. 1:12mission shepard donated the club to the
  38. 1:14usga golf museum
  39. 1:16and library in liberty corner new jersey
  40. 1:18where it sits on display along with the
  41. 1:20sock shepard used
  42. 1:21to carry the two golf balls on his
  43. 1:24flight to the moon
  44. 1:26and now you're going to give this
  45. 1:27historic implement away is that what i
  46. 1:29understand
  47. 1:29well the whole thing was all fun to
  48. 1:31start with because of my love for the
  49. 1:32game of golf
  50. 1:34and it seemed to me that that the club
  51. 1:36really should rest somewhere in the
  52. 1:38country where everybody could see it the
  53. 1:40usga museum in new jersey seemed the
  54. 1:42obvious place
  55. 1:43and that of course is the reason for the
  56. 1:45occasion today is to give this to bud
  57. 1:48from all of my friends my golfing
  58. 1:51friends on the moon
  59. 1:53admiral we're very happy to receive this
  60. 1:56club and it's a great honor for us to
  61. 1:57have it in our museum
  62. 1:59we now have the two most famous clubs in
  63. 2:01golf
  64. 2:02one the calamity jane putter that bobby
  65. 2:05jones used in his
  66. 2:06great career now we have the moon club
  67. 2:08which makes our
  68. 2:09museum certainly complete thank you very
