- 0:02hello and welcome today I'm going to
- 0:05take you through how to prepare a search
- 0:07in order to find scholarly articles on a
- 0:10topic before you even start searching
- 0:12it's important to understand what you
- 0:14are trying to find and more importantly
- 0:17how to translate your research question
- 0:19into terms that a computer can
- 0:21understand let's start out with our
- 0:23research question let's say that I want
- 0:25to find information on the effectiveness
- 0:28of food literacy program for high school
- 0:30students the first thing I have to do is
- 0:33to write this out in the form of a
- 0:35question what is the effect of food
- 0:37literacy programs on the BMI of high
- 0:40school students the next thing I have to
- 0:43do is analyze the relevant parts of my
- 0:45question the relevant parts of my
- 0:48question are food literacy BMI and high
- 0:51school students then I have to define
- 0:54the parts of my question what I call
- 0:56Food literacy is really just jargon that
- 0:59represents the idea of food choices and
- 1:02their impact on health so let's find
- 1:04some similar words that describe the
- 1:06concept of food
- 1:08literacy here are some words that
- 1:10describe my concept food literacy food
- 1:14education programs healthy eating
- 1:16behaviors food preparation and
- 1:19nutritional
- 1:20education these all describe the ideas
- 1:23behind food literacy and we'll pick up
- 1:25some relevant articles my next concept
- 1:28to look at is High School schol students
- 1:30there are other words to describe this
- 1:32group including teenagers adolescents
- 1:35Secondary School students BMI is quite a
- 1:39specific idea in almost a universal
- 1:41description but we've included BMI and
- 1:45body mass index to cover both ways this
- 1:48could be described in the literature now
- 1:50that we have some synonyms we can start
- 1:53structuring a search we are going to
- 1:55place all the similar terms together
- 1:58within brackets and then join the groups
- 2:00of terms together this is concept one it
- 2:04contains the words that describe the
- 2:06concept of food literacy but broadened
- 2:09out to include the words nutritional
- 2:11education or healthy eating Behavior
- 2:14because essentially this is what the
- 2:16concept of food literacy is describing
- 2:18concept two is about high school
- 2:20students but we could also describe this
- 2:22group as teenagers or adolescence so
- 2:25we've gathered these words together in
- 2:26Brackets as well concept three is about
- 2:29being Mi I both as an acronym and fully
- 2:32spelled out we come to our final search
- 2:35string you'll see that each word or
- 2:37phrase is separated by the word or in
- 2:40capital letters this is a command saying
- 2:43to the database as long as you find this
- 2:45word or this one or this one in the
- 2:48brackets that's okay because they all
- 2:50describe the same thing you'll also see
- 2:53that each group of brackets is connected
- 2:55together by the word and this means we
- 2:57are saying to the database that while we
- 2:59don't mind which word that it finds
- 3:01within the brackets it must find at
- 3:03least one of the terms in the brackets
- 3:05together in the search results we've put
- 3:08terms of more than one word in quotes
- 3:11because then they'll be searched as a
- 3:12phrase with both words together instead
- 3:15of being searched separately phrases
- 3:17such as food literacy or healthy eating
- 3:19Behavior are examples we've also added
- 3:22the asterisk symbol to words such as
- 3:25adolescence so the database will pick up
- 3:27adolescent or adolescent
- 3:30same with teenager or teenagers now that
- 3:33we have constructed a good search all we
- 3:35have to do is to apply it to an artical
- 3:38database we can do this by simply
- 3:40cutting and pasting this search string
- 3:43into a database such as summon senile
- 3:45PubMed or Google Scholar we will cover
- 3:48this and how to refine our search in the
- 3:51next
