Ash Wednesday Homily 2026: Fr. Vigoa — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:03Today you've walked into church and you
- 0:05choose to let someone put ashes on your
- 0:08forehead.
- 0:10Think about that.
- 0:12In a world obsessed with image, success,
- 0:15youth, and control,
- 0:17you voluntarily step up to be marked
- 0:20with dust.
- 0:22Why?
- 0:24Well, because somewhere deep inside you
- 0:26know something.
- 0:29You know that promotions don't satisfy,
- 0:32the vacations don't fix it, distractions
- 0:36don't quiet it, endless hours of
- 0:40scrolling don't heal it.
- 0:43There's this restlessness in the human
- 0:45heart that no achievement can silence.
- 0:50Ash Wednesday names that restlessness.
- 0:54Return to me with all of your heart.
- 0:58First reading tells us not with part of
- 1:01your heart, but with not with the
- 1:03polished version,
- 1:05not with Sunday morning version, with
- 1:09all of it. Your ambition, your fear,
- 1:12your guilt, your hidden wounds, your
- 1:14exhaustion, your ego, your loneliness,
- 1:17all of it.
- 1:19We live in a time where everyone is
- 1:21ready to tear their clothes in outrage.
- 1:24We protest, we react, we criticize, we
- 1:27expose, we post, we cancel.
- 1:31But very few are willing to tear their
- 1:33own hearts open.
- 1:37The prophet Joel doesn't say rend your
- 1:39neighbor's heart. He says rend your
- 1:42heart.
- 1:44That's different. It's easy to diagnose
- 1:47what's wrong with the neighbor, what's
- 1:49wrong with the world. It's harder to let
- 1:52God diagnose what's wrong with me.
- 1:55Ash Wednesday is not about public
- 1:58performance. It's about interior
- 2:00honesty.
- 2:02And here's the radical truth. You cannot
- 2:04return to God on your own.
- 2:07If this were self-improvement, Lent
- 2:10would be a fitness challenge.
- 2:13If this was therapy, Lenton would be a a
- 2:16journaling exercise.
- 2:18If this were moralis mor if this was
- 2:22moralism, Lent would be a checklist.
- 2:26This is we're talking about grace.
- 2:29Grace that comes from God himself.
- 2:32He says, "Return to me for I am gracious
- 2:35and merciful."
- 2:37God does not shout from the distance. He
- 2:40says it from the cross.
- 2:43St. Paul says something almost shocking.
- 2:46says, "God made Christ to be sin for
- 2:49us." The innocent one stepped into our
- 2:53mess, steps into our shame, into our
- 2:56dysfunction, into our death. He didn't
- 2:58stand at a distant and criticize
- 3:00humanity. He entered into it. That's the
- 3:04price of your reconciliation.
- 3:08The cross is not some religious
- 3:10decoration we wear around our necks.
- 3:13It's the cost of your rescue.
- 3:16So when we say return to God with all of
- 3:18your heart, we're not talking about
- 3:20joining a club. We're talking about
- 3:23aligning your life with the one who gave
- 3:25it to you,
- 3:27the one who gave his life for you.
- 3:31And here is where it becomes
- 3:32uncomfortable.
- 3:34We often want God as an accessory, one
- 3:37thing among the many, there when we need
- 3:40it. We want faith to improve our lives,
- 3:43not to reorder them. We want
- 3:45inspiration, not surrender. But Lent is
- 3:49not about adding Jesus to your schedule.
- 3:52It's about placing him at the very
- 3:54center of your life,
- 3:56at the center of your business
- 3:58decisions, at the center of your
- 4:00relationships, at the center of the how
- 4:03you use money, at the center of your
- 4:06sexuality,
- 4:07at the center of your ambition and the
- 4:10center of your identity. He says to me,
- 4:13it says to us, "Return to me with all of
- 4:17your heart."
- 4:20That means something has drifted.
- 4:23Maybe it's not dramatic. Maybe it's
- 4:25subtle. A prayer life that has faded.
- 4:29Not attending mass regularly. A
- 4:31conscience that became negotiable. A
- 4:34marriage that has become distant. A soul
- 4:37that has become numb to everything.
- 4:40And yet here you are. And that matters
- 4:44because faith is never solitary.
- 4:47The prophet calls the whole assembly,
- 4:49the elderly, the children, the
- 4:51bridegroom, everyone.
- 4:54Conversion is not a private self-help
- 4:57journey. It is ecclesial. It is church.
- 5:00It's who we are. We walk together as a
- 5:02family.
- 5:04You're not meant to fight for your soul
- 5:06alone.
- 5:07The church is not a a spiritual content
- 5:10provider.
- 5:12It's communion.
- 5:14Christ came to gather the scattered to
- 5:17pull into one body to remind us that we
- 5:21belong to something larger than
- 5:22ourselves. That truth lies outside of
- 5:25ourselves.
- 5:27And then St. Paul says something urgent.
- 5:31Now is the acceptable time. Now is the
- 5:34day of salvation. Not someday. Not when
- 5:37life slows down. Not when I'm not so
- 5:39busy. Not when things get easier. He
- 5:42says right now
- 5:44because now is all you're guaranteed.
- 5:48One day someone will stand over your
- 5:50dead body and say dust to dust.
- 5:54Today those words are not spoken as a
- 5:56threat. They're spoken as mercy.
- 6:00They cut through illusion.
- 6:03You're not infinite. Your time is not
- 6:06endless. Your opportunities are not
- 6:09permanent.
- 6:11So what are you building your life on?
- 6:14Reputation, control, security, pleasure,
- 6:18accumulation,
- 6:20approval.
- 6:22Ash Wednesday confronts all of that and
- 6:25whispers to you, none of that will last,
- 6:30but communion with God will.
- 6:34Jesus speaks of prayer, fasting, and
- 6:36almsgiving in the gospel, and he warns
- 6:39against doing them for applause.
- 6:43We live in a culture that loves
- 6:45applause, is addicted to visibility, to
- 6:48image,
- 6:50but God works in secret. The father who
- 6:53sees in secret. The real battle of Lent
- 6:57will not be external. It will be hidden.
- 7:00Will you pray when no one is watching?
- 7:03Will you fast when it's when it's not
- 7:05convenient? Will you give when it will
- 7:08cost you something? Because the reward
- 7:11is not admiration.
- 7:13The reward is God himself. That's the
- 7:16reward.
- 7:18Here's the beautiful paradox.
- 7:21The more you lose yourself for him, the
- 7:23more you finally become yourself.
- 7:26The ashes you receive today are not only
- 7:29a sign of death. They are in the shape
- 7:31of a cross.
- 7:33Death and redemption intersect on your
- 7:36forehead.
- 7:38Fragile, fragility, and destiny meet.
- 7:41You are dust, but you are dust that's
- 7:44been loved by God. Dust that has been
- 7:47redeemed by Christ. Dust that is
- 7:50destined for resurrection.
- 7:52This Lent can be cosmetic or it can be
- 7:56transformational.
- 7:59Give your all these 40 days. You can
- 8:02give up chocolate or you can surrender
- 8:04control. You can attend out of habit or
- 8:07you can return with your whole heart. No
- 8:10one here, absolutely no one is far gone.
- 8:15No one here is too indifferent.
- 8:18No one here is beyond God's grace.
- 8:22But the door is not open forever.
- 8:25He says, "Return to me." Not halfway,
- 8:29not cautiously, not politely, not
- 8:32someday, but with your whole heart. And
- 8:35if you do, if you dare to let Christ
- 8:39actually be at the center of your life,
- 8:41you will discover something this world
- 8:43cannot manufacture, I promise you, you
- 8:46will have eternal peace. You'll have
- 8:48more clarity than you have ever had. You
- 8:51will have freedom. You will have life.
- 8:54That's where this 40-day journey leads
- 8:57you.
- 8:58not to ashes but to resurrection.
- 9:02Give your complete and total heart to
- 9:05Jesus this Lent. Amen.
