- 0:15right next to us right now in the
- 0:17dressing room so he would come here with
- 0:19Cameron Steele who is someone who
- 0:21studied with him skip Cameron also
- 0:23studied a lot with Sir Robert Redford
- 0:26also wasted as Hazuki he translated to
- 0:37establish him and his work and so it's a
- 0:39great I think really great and where

- 1:13professional theatre international
- 1:14American theatre and for a long time we
- 1:16have to of course try to get him here we
- 1:17did one evening about his new book the
- 1:20culture is the body was camera and he
- 1:22sent as a video but it's a great honor
- 1:23to have him here it's also the end of
- 1:25our season we had a big season you have

- 1:34Michael um Isabella and everybody who
- 1:38really worked so hard to make this
- 1:41season so great so thank you for coming
- 1:43and we will be coming in right now
- 1:46[Applause]
- 3:43yeah
- 6:50[Applause]
- 7:26so again thank you all for coming and
- 7:30joining us here at the Siegel Center at
- 7:31the Graduate Center CUNY in the name of
- 7:33the Siegel Center and the ph.d program
- 7:35in theater with speed or echo so we
- 7:36really welcome you here and thank you
- 7:39Tadashi's were looking for taking the
- 7:41time out of your life to spend a moment
- 7:44with us we had a little discussion
- 7:49before and we thought about a couple of
- 7:51questions and I think we decided to I'm
- 7:54going to read them to him and then he
- 7:56will respond to the questions in in a
- 8:00fully association way and we have two
- 8:03more chairs here two more chairs there I
- 8:04mean they'll fill them up before we
- 8:07before we start someone sitting here
- 8:14yeah so just take class again so thank
- 8:17you so much and questions we had four
- 8:21for today's uzuki who was here to throw
- 8:24the Trojan women in Saratoga in
- 8:27collaboration with the city company but
- 8:28also significant conference will take
- 8:30place focusing on his work and impact on
- 8:33the global world of theater but also on
- 8:35one America especially so our questions
- 8:37were how did it feel for him to be back
- 8:40in the US after 15 years it's a very
- 8:43long time for anybody who is such a
- 8:46prominent figure in involved theater the
- 8:51play the Trojan women which is a play
- 8:53from the 80s who perhaps many say his
- 8:55signature play and he felt strongly that
- 8:57this play shall come here it will be
- 8:58performed up in Saratoga so why why that
- 9:01play now and what are the ideas behind
- 9:05it he is part one could say of the 68
- 9:09generation coming out of Japan and and
- 9:12so our question is what does he think
- 9:15now what theater should be concerned
- 9:17about what is it considered who should
- 9:19it be because what it was could it be
- 9:21really concerned about and he studied as
- 9:25you know political science he didn't
- 9:28start right away in acting schools and
- 9:30in the Stella Adler studios of the world
- 9:33he came from political science and then
- 9:34developed his unique work and so our
- 9:38thought was like battle break to also
- 9:40believe in the signs of theater is there
- 9:43as method is there a science and can it
- 9:45be adopted globally what he created and
- 9:48found as a model is the body in the last
- 9:52book that Cameron translated and we had
- 9:54a great evening here at the Siegel
- 9:55Center volunteer base the body that
- 9:56after all in system SEO of his work be
- 9:58the center of communication of culture
- 10:01and art and also globally in between
- 10:03countries and communicate history and we
- 10:06of course want to perhaps know a little
- 10:08bit more about Toba what you saw on the
- 10:10fifth is most impressive structure he
- 10:13created perhaps also a big inspiration
- 10:14for Roland Wilson for his watermill
- 10:16center with mobile talk abut also his
- 10:18contemporary working in China a lot on
- 10:21Asian countries and Indonesia in looking
- 10:26at traditions and who perhaps are
- 10:28vanishing and bringing his his supposed
- 10:30to work to it so it's a very long
- 10:32question and big field normally I try to
- 10:35be much sure that I promise I stayed the
- 10:38way out of it but Tadashi please don't
- 10:45vest I know no
- 10:47kokomo question but I don't mind you
- 10:50didn't take this day but I see another
- 10:52indicator that applicable for the next
- 10:55expect so before I get into the details
- 10:58of these questions he wants to give you
- 11:00a more of an overall picture of why he
- 11:04began to do theater in the first place
- 11:06your visor what is marriage is good many
- 11:09title page it appropriate to shows us
- 11:11connected networks
- 11:13so his first impulse actually when he
- 11:15wanted to be expressive be an artist was
- 11:18actually to be a novelist he's up to a
- 11:21resident over to us via Bloomberg
- 11:23mesquita and he was very interested in
- 11:25French culture French literature and
- 11:28Russian literature but I'm a bit of a
- 11:30pig in a boomer and also interested in
- 11:33the culture and literature coming from
- 11:36the Latin magic world arranged with a
- 11:39Greek from the whole Mediterranean via
- 11:42surah so your mother into that and then
- 11:47you hit upon the problem of you know why
- 11:51do theatre he told you mean you annoying
- 11:53make us kids together
- 11:56he in the moment that he was having
- 11:58these feelings he looked at the theatre
- 12:01that was happening around him and he
- 12:02didn't like any of it
- 12:05another thought to put them under school
- 12:08they took sure our educator so it's an
- 12:14interesting place from which you again
- 12:17he was a political science economics
- 12:20major at what's at a university when he
- 12:23was started you could you know come back
- 12:26circus a Kyoto milk when Toby's miracle
- 12:31you go 200 becoming a month and because
- 12:34he had that field of study he was really
- 12:37looking at the bigger picture he was
- 12:40trying to formulate as a young man a
- 12:41world view what place does Japan have in
- 12:44the world what what's going on in the
- 12:46world right now he was concerned and
- 12:48hitting up against these big ideas so it
- 12:50would be a materially trade to me and he
- 12:53thought the kids I didn't I just feed in
- 12:54mice and he thought the best way to
- 12:56interrogate and explore these questions
- 12:58was not through economic studies or
- 13:01through political studies that in fact
- 13:02through the theater to do your arms and
- 13:06there's three main reasons behind that
- 13:08mothering it you can equip the boats go
- 13:11first is theater uses language uses word
- 13:15immensely
- 13:16it has an important role in the process
- 13:18of see lexicon most of the Cordova gone
- 13:21and it needs a body in space the most of
- 13:25guru Padilla and it's something that you
- 13:27have to do in a community in a group but
- 13:30being what achieved I thought good look
- 13:33do you know what the Caritas must permit
- 13:38so nobody no polka mean token focusing
- 13:42on today - Mira and she's putting
- 13:45together this great work is huge my
- 13:48behavior
- 13:50so through those lenses of language the
- 13:54body you can you can view each of the
- 13:58hip and also the way the way of
- 14:01different people work in groups group
- 14:03body and language it's a lens through
- 14:06which you can see the differences
- 14:08between each culture each group so in
- 14:11Kavala lots guide but it's still mental
- 14:14illness so if you look at the way that
- 14:16language is used you can understand
- 14:18history about its students a lot of the
- 14:21vision of the main thought is Enoch
- 14:23so you don't only understand history and
- 14:26tradition by looking at language but you
- 14:28can also understand a kind of mentality
- 14:30so long jingles got with them all in
- 14:33that sense we consciously they're kinda
- 14:36safe about beach now so you can
- 14:39understand the sensitivities or
- 14:40Missouri's room or the aesthetics of a
- 14:43certain group by examining language you
- 14:49thought that's a good tool a good way to
- 14:50investigate different kinds of cultures
- 14:53differently around allows and then
- 14:56there's the body of about them in the
- 14:58law
- 14:59oh no not an Indian to the knowledge
- 15:01that the what the muskets to know super
- 15:04to know so we may think that we all
- 15:06share more or less the same body but if
- 15:08you actually look at each person even
- 15:10though that we're all the same species
- 15:12we're quite different if you look at
- 15:15each individual so know so much though
- 15:17you've got their confidence or not
- 15:19dependent lots of experiment you can see
- 15:21from kotaku you can see from looking at
- 15:24a person's body the kind of upbringing
- 15:26they have the kind of household they
- 15:27listed some original you can also see
- 15:30the kind of DNA yeah
- 15:32so there's all Nagi biking doctor via
- 15:35collects a shoujo Maharaja bok-bok
- 15:40period hike demo style show you Madonna
- 15:44ricotta cheese so because of those
- 15:46things the same kind of bacteria if a
- 15:48person is infected with it it it has a
- 15:51different effect based on that
- 15:53individual makeup it's not is it Moscato
- 15:56I cut off the way those those will not
- 16:00show up in different bodies is only
- 16:02the different basic our body and how
- 16:04long it takes for it to show so there
- 16:07are still men do some yoga mats and also
- 16:09depending on the age all of these things
- 16:12followed by the body cut about a lot
- 16:14commuted or you go to fine utility
- 16:17vehicle and so by looking at the body
- 16:20being aware of the body you can right
- 16:21away see the difference between yourself
- 16:23and the other so always thought about
- 16:27this in there what's going along that
- 16:29path better games got the higher that
- 16:31could be she might contain musket ball
- 16:34but there's no comeback to the organist
- 16:36okay I said I'm a junior would I
- 16:38installed we do connect must make funny
- 16:41jokes so oftentimes the theater is
- 16:43thought of is like this version sort of
- 16:46direct relationship between the one
- 16:48director and one actor but for him he
- 16:51thinks of it more as in at least three
- 16:53you need a group you need a sense of
- 16:56community and shared grammar with the
- 16:58people to create what he thinks Peter is
- 17:01meaning us on you does the motor could
- 17:04you cook a la Cucaracha magnets
- 17:06so another got people go when you're
- 17:10good what's going to make a connection
- 17:11so once you get more than that your use
- 17:13of the Google once you get more than
- 17:15three people working on something you
- 17:17start to create the idea of a nation a
- 17:19bug of a community you start to create
- 17:21rules that are shared by this group of
- 17:25people there's no rule get it go get an
- 17:27eye cup with the throw typically so a
- 17:29group in you just took a ball and so
- 17:31what allows someone to be brought into
- 17:33that groove or not is whether they agree
- 17:35with or have kind of empathy with the
- 17:38rules that are set up there's one on
- 17:40jobs I'm gonna do it with or you know so
- 17:42no Luca no Donna not spitting at the
- 17:44bottom on them and then of course you
- 17:46run into the problem like well who's
- 17:47gonna set the rules no not really got me
- 17:50today if you look at American politics
- 17:53right now you can see that problem
- 17:54pretty clearly
- 17:56sorry started telling young people and
- 17:58China as well you can see that problem
- 18:00pretty quickly
- 18:01do what magic you do a little bit with a
- 18:04little foreign experience makes you and
- 18:06with in one group you have a subgroups
- 18:09spirit and then they make their own
- 18:11rules within the bigger group the most I
- 18:14love for such a good for school ball do
- 18:18Reagan distance or group on me eternity
- 18:21I'm continuity anyway if you want to
- 18:24create anything that has a degree of
- 18:26continuity to it you need rules so sort
- 18:29of though you cuz that's a bit difficult
- 18:32you know what I'm moving and so one of
- 18:35the interesting things to study is how
- 18:37how those rules are made what's the
- 18:40process through which you know that
- 18:41shared grammar rules are arrived at oh
- 18:45no G hook say this veggies of two
- 18:48membranes become a public so how do you
- 18:51make rules that will last right that
- 18:53will that will stand the test of time I
- 18:56get on this dance first of our imagery
- 18:59Google participa book so in the case of
- 19:01the theater you have a truth who's you
- 19:04know creating work based on a set of
- 19:07rule what are recruiting is perfect
- 19:08about your go simple and if the rules
- 19:11don't hold with that group then the
- 19:14company dissolve they find contradiction
- 19:18there is friction within the group
- 19:20people don't agree it falls apart so
- 19:22doing social group knowing English
- 19:25that's sort of I think I could fit that
- 19:28up too but I guess I forgot that you do
- 19:31this man and so you need to have a way
- 19:33to resolve you know creative conflict
- 19:36you need to have something to fall back
- 19:37on to solutions that the use internal
- 19:42rifts that happen within groups so sort
- 19:44of Thor on a second poki Roni Sunita
- 19:53toe-mah-toe Java developer need on Fox a
- 19:57status given Apogee not appreciate polka
- 19:59unique statement wanna so tiny tree
- 20:02sucks netted it became a single canals
- 20:05colony so can I text or who can open in
- 20:07Oman burn a bit please so bring a dog so
- 20:11one of the things that help create these
- 20:13rules is
- 20:15by examining this idea of the other the
- 20:17other culture you know we try to build
- 20:20rules based on the body language and how
- 20:22the group operates but then one way to
- 20:25to create these rules is to as a group
- 20:28decide well how do we feel about this
- 20:30culture this person this event that's
- 20:33outside of the group how do we view that
- 20:36as a company to the code by working so
- 20:40for in his case he couldn't create a
- 20:42company and only think about Japanese
- 20:44problem that doesn't so the Jewish
- 20:45problem is you need something to hit
- 20:48other cases you need something to create
- 20:50a kind of objective distance the helper
- 20:53give up as you are I know Mom but
- 20:57there's no cutter thank you I wasn't a
- 21:00gentle thick enough dinner okay come to
- 21:03mommy
- 21:04my little puppy will join you in this
- 21:08case he grew up in a family where there
- 21:11was a degree of Japanese traditional
- 21:13performing arts practice going on and at
- 21:18the same time he had an interest in
- 21:19European culture and literature so the
- 21:22horrible go there the colony adorned
- 21:25under the turkey depicts a lot good
- 21:29strategy and so when he was in this
- 21:32process of looking at his own cultures
- 21:34tradition and looking at traditions
- 21:36outside of his culture the thing that
- 21:38really landed with him was the tradition
- 21:43of Greek tragedy it's got a higher geeky
- 21:46little problem colonel
- 21:53so I was absolutely smacked it's not
- 21:57really the source of anglo-saxon culture
- 21:59but when we think of you know the source
- 22:01of what is now called Western culture
- 22:03the Greek tragedy is at the center of
- 22:05that the most young so you put all of
- 22:10this in you beside your home
- 22:12so uncut that these are the voice of
- 22:15something to me my or open all is not a
- 22:19Greek the world needs episode - what
- 22:22people that so he had this knowledge of
- 22:25Japanese traditional performing arts and
- 22:27then he had this interest and kind of
- 22:29resonance with you know European history
- 22:32and culture and in particular Greek
- 22:34tragedy and that was the sort of
- 22:36springboard from which he began his
- 22:38exploration know what I said duck say
- 22:41that musical he wasn't doing it in
- 22:43necessarily a scholarly way drew called
- 22:47Mukherjee he thought just studying it
- 22:50through through language was not kind of
- 22:52just studying through the reading and
- 22:54writing was not going to be not a--not
- 22:56so so mr. Moore a la una cometa open
- 22:59economy tomorrow 6:00 p.m. so my
- 23:02schedule my got MK public strategies to
- 23:07comedy base nod Europe engaged Daisy Doo
- 23:14disabilities conniving today the big
- 23:17strategy young novice nautical in severe
- 23:20medical to you to establish that he
- 23:22looks a moderate oh cool
- 23:24cookie up in you know home so he really
- 23:27decided to go deep end of what what was
- 23:30at the core of the structure of Greek
- 23:32tragedy with tragedy which was you know
- 23:34behind a lot of the great work
- 23:36subsequent works in European history
- 23:38literature I in all of the Mediterranean
- 23:42cultures this was at the course we
- 23:43wanted to look at how is it structured
- 23:45and what is it that made it take anymore
- 23:48doesn't look Timothy no authorizing okay
- 23:51the other fun of boom god never punishes
- 23:54people similar I give a solid me okay
- 23:58well because she perspective to you know
- 24:03so the feeling when he was growing up in
- 24:06Japan was you know Western culture had
- 24:10permeated around the world but no matter
- 24:13what culture you you traveled to Western
- 24:16culture and the traditions of Western
- 24:18culture were there were part of the bay
- 24:21of operations of whatever else was going
- 24:23on but we are argument for hating words
- 24:28your funnel especially the intellectual
- 24:36circles in Japan at a time they were
- 24:40very much based in a reading of Western
- 24:43classics and there was a kind of
- 24:45inferiority complex that resulted
- 24:48welcome again by a beautiful especially
- 24:51in the contemporary theatre of the time
- 24:53what the Sicily who named it yet what's
- 24:55the name of it it's a circle for
- 24:58typically thought to be an eye but he
- 25:00didn't feel that way he didn't have this
- 25:02kind of inferiority complex but he was
- 25:04interested in what structures were lying
- 25:07behind it he boarded kill it so sort of
- 25:10on the bottom Jenna Coleman limited and
- 25:14he started to think there must be some
- 25:17universal principles that are shared
- 25:20between this Greek tragic source
- 25:25material that was permeated throughout
- 25:27the world and within his own Japanese
- 25:30tradition he thought there must be some
- 25:32so the farms you've done above the
- 25:34school and that was in his 30s he was
- 25:36starting to make that exploration Sonia
- 25:38done a lot the legality and the result
- 25:42of that first exploration was the
- 25:44production of the Trojan women the
- 25:46quarter all sizes think of the magic you
- 25:48now may become oh look at you mr.
- 25:50Bluebird and this is one this is the
- 25:53first production that he brought to the
- 25:54United States in 1979 to Brooklyn
- 25:57College their production of don't do
- 25:59them it was 38 years ago
- 26:05so let's again think about you need our
- 26:08moment it is chocolate the pen and Ellen
- 26:11Stewart invited into La MaMa in nineteen
- 26:13plus when we brought the bottle Pacific
- 26:18this garage personal Columbus granite on
- 26:21a more good experience and so here's his
- 26:24creations based on his exploration of
- 26:27Greek tragedy were the first productions
- 26:28that in fact he brought to the United
- 26:30State so their Greek tragedy Wow Jeeva I
- 26:35am a model game data get up so today oh
- 26:38no ma you'll never really make no
- 26:42products generated two photons it
- 26:44explodes it evenly and so one of the
- 26:47things he discovered in his expectation
- 26:49was that there he realized that in fact
- 26:51the structure that exists in Greek
- 26:54tragedy especially in the production of
- 26:55Greek tragedy there were some
- 26:58similarities between tricky between
- 27:01traditions that existed in Japan that
- 27:02exist today
- 27:04Wow I killed lieutenant serving us and
- 27:07there's basically three points of
- 27:10commonality what's your vision good
- 27:12husband so the first being that the
- 27:15theater developed them out of ISM
- 27:17religious ceremony so it got a keen
- 27:20banking on that quota and the other is
- 27:24something you don't see so much in the
- 27:25modern theater the the use of a chorus
- 27:28circle men coverton's
- 27:30and finally the use of masks oh no you
- 27:34no no no - you a Mick - could you
- 27:36imagine disco these elements you can
- 27:39find in the theater of the No
- 27:41so the shujinko color of the keys of
- 27:44gurus
- 27:44tony accardo dismay shake our key
- 27:47message in coma detective you cannot
- 27:49unsee dr. Bashir and so the the
- 27:54protagonists usually are coming from a a
- 27:58kind of situated family situation
- 28:02dae-su repay a Ruggiano Kodomo talked
- 28:07about propolis most on otome system
- 28:10kept sticking the monotony I didn't it
- 28:13was almost peaceful throughout the city
- 28:14components and the the structure of the
- 28:18space also was similar so you in in the
- 28:22Greek amphitheatre for example the
- 28:23actors would speak their text to the
- 28:26seat of Dionysus where they were the
- 28:28priests of Dionysus would often sit and
- 28:30would sort of have a dialogue with God
- 28:32through that point of focus in this day
- 28:35they still smoke gondola fun you are
- 28:37it's your hero Turkey got this one since
- 28:40a little since dr. Seuss did so didn't
- 28:43cut the english message so the
- 28:45performance and the acting was created
- 28:48with an awareness of the hierarchy of
- 28:50the space the actor on the stage the
- 28:54seat of the priest and then God brings
- 28:56kind of like triangle and then the
- 28:58audience being witness to that the local
- 29:01dome on that day I can't get supermomo
- 29:04Connie Connie Joshua will not do 616
- 29:08mind and in the know you have a similar
- 29:10structure you had a very specific seat
- 29:12in the audience where the Shogun would
- 29:14sit and the actors would speak directly
- 29:16to that point in space just got a nice
- 29:19buttery spider more sodium cortical
- 29:22digital book listening - ooh and so the
- 29:26way you move about sort of universe and
- 29:28everything is done in relation to that
- 29:30focal point in the space very similar in
- 29:33how government and in realism and you
- 29:36talk like this
- 29:46it does it you don't say I'm going to
- 29:48kill you this way so many sit ups so he
- 29:59was he was he was inspired by this
- 30:02caring Avella strategy there's no Gong
- 30:05Cosmo so the chi gong made the the use
- 30:10of the space also was quite different
- 30:13than modern theatre who know mr.
- 30:15Bellamy's farm did adore it
- 30:20so there's a German architect fun bit
- 30:24earlier do you know this is released on
- 30:27the road
- 30:28yes yes Figgis modernist portable
- 30:31product electrical computer can you sit
- 30:34the whole government don't want a damn
- 30:36about the mobility not stay more so now
- 30:39nice hmm so the idea in his arcade was
- 30:43then how you sort of take hierarchy out
- 30:47of the out of the picture in other words
- 30:49wherever you are in the space the
- 30:51quality is the same the moment was that
- 30:54Assemblymember the blight is the same
- 30:58the temperature is insane
- 30:59the religion is treated in a cool Frank
- 31:02was a kind of democratic way to imagine
- 31:05this thing big this really not really
- 31:09not there I'm sorry
- 31:14nomicon maybe you're not choosing
- 31:16Marianas fish the Madonna got to come
- 31:18that I've actually done it so basically
- 31:21what what makes modern space modern is
- 31:24the fact we've lost this hierarchy we've
- 31:27lost the kind of central focal point
- 31:29it's become everyone equal
- 31:31mangia no communist in that people to
- 31:33buy the show horse to do sort of like
- 31:38Nietzsche and says that's uh right that
- 31:43god is dead right so God is left to
- 31:45space choosing aback there's no century
- 31:49so today Massimo soy yo yo yo know been
- 31:56a monocot inestimable charity eh Tim
- 32:00local merit okay no karma cotta toe it
- 32:03is mo kono Kalakaua Anita Renaud okay
- 32:06good experience though you know so it
- 32:11was from seeing that commonality of
- 32:13strategies that he hit upon the idea of
- 32:16using the text of Greek tragedy to make
- 32:19a new creation not authorial no no and
- 32:24then just to respond your question of
- 32:26why the Trojan women now quarter
- 32:29alluvium night
- 32:30coño terraria non-mormon also gained a
- 32:33microphone he finds the themes that the
- 32:36Church of women addresses to be quite
- 32:38contemporary well we don't even need
- 32:41totally alone that the unica destitution
- 32:43so Euripides is the automated the Trojan
- 32:47women who know tokyo technical tourism a
- 32:50goody-goody capital offense erotic mini
- 32:55muckey tahoe no Kuni ons MBR kara-tay
- 33:01dinosuars em the crucifix me so what
- 33:04happens in the story is that the greeks
- 33:07go and they annihilate throwing all of
- 33:10the warriors males are destroyed right
- 33:15the same so do you throw whatever no in
- 33:19the movie is also possible to have same
- 33:21jewish nazione so what happens in
- 33:24contemporary warfare is different you
- 33:26there's a kind of an invasion that
- 33:29happens anything over the human genius
- 33:31and there's a there's a creation as a
- 33:34colonization it was all available convey
- 33:37me dance your dance your policy kunio a
- 33:41pattern of libya cara de Beauvoir Ichiko
- 33:45god she means up for them to show me so
- 33:47seductive otto's man so the idea of
- 33:50completely annihilating not just the
- 33:52people but all of the buildings all of
- 33:54the culture in one shot is something you
- 33:58meet the what happens in the play is it
- 34:00the questionable no well then the show
- 34:03me such a discard the idea is a complete
- 34:05annihilation of an entire of the enemy
- 34:08so they are it is this regime cool well
- 34:11explode I think at the moment we show to
- 34:14the public baths poor so there only
- 34:16fishermen no telling but I knew I did
- 34:18call mom's taking me city monuments and
- 34:21there's this famous scene where Achilles
- 34:23kills Hector and it's not enough to have
- 34:26killed him he
- 34:27strings him up to the back of his
- 34:29carriage and parades him around to show
- 34:33them he said sure ensues and he makes a
- 34:35show of the destruction of Hector could
- 34:38audience and after the whistle
- 34:41so he sees a strong connection between
- 34:43this and the kinds of things Isis is
- 34:45doing today the mentality behind those
- 34:49kinds of actions by the symbolism of
- 34:52core by the main product so when he
- 34:57talks about sort of an ancient mentality
- 34:59of those days it this kind of extremism
- 35:02there no other girl Europol had a man to
- 35:07cancel so to know that I could suck you
- 35:10know there's an inhuman so this the
- 35:14awareness of this you know human
- 35:16tendency to up total destruction is
- 35:19something that came about in the
- 35:20Mediterranean culture of that time that
- 35:22is not soldiers here and if you look at
- 35:25the what the Nazis did it was a similar
- 35:27kind of idea of total annihilation of
- 35:31the people means of course Minister look
- 35:33to go this idea of total destruction of
- 35:37a race or of a client there so are you
- 35:41sort of discussion so about your proviso
- 35:44he Antikythera group people specifically
- 35:47but they couldn't say 1000 people dying
- 35:52this now is to the Potala scum initial
- 35:58the Kolkata coconut I this is economics
- 36:01they go collect our energy from I got
- 36:06instructor smoke a certificate alumina
- 36:11course P do you polka manufacture so
- 36:15what makes what Isis is doing a little
- 36:17bit different than what the Nazis were
- 36:18doing is in those day and there's been a
- 36:20lot of sort of talking about and
- 36:24apologizing about a restoration of
- 36:26national relations since those days
- 36:27between Germany and the rest of europe
- 36:29and north of the world but that was
- 36:31something in those days that would
- 36:32definitely have any bit more more so
- 36:34between countries now Isis is going
- 36:37beyond national boundaries of just
- 36:40taking anybody it can from any place to
- 36:42get behind more of a religious religious
- 36:46push mamas you don't know my okay
- 36:49but something at Genesis yeah shuco yep
- 36:55good puppet I dunno you move to more
- 36:57scalable more quick what I think the
- 36:59mentality Yamato
- 37:02so my you see they talk about it as a
- 37:05religious conflict but he actually
- 37:07thinks of it more as a retrogression
- 37:10into this kind of ancient mentality that
- 37:12you see depicted so depicted so clearly
- 37:16in the in the Greek tragedy so the
- 37:18Morrisons called the junior level to
- 37:20honor this man what are you do you just
- 37:22do some German so another important
- 37:25point to think about when analyzing you
- 37:28know why this is such an important born
- 37:30play is the the existence of Euripides
- 37:33himself for you just do not cut the give
- 37:36you some harmless still number so
- 37:38Euripides was a Greek he was from the
- 37:40winning side totally anonymous to deny
- 37:44it wasn't a victim wasn't a Trojan who
- 37:48wrote the play so there now who know
- 37:50giddy Sammy's hee-honk pick him out do
- 37:53coke I thought it was a little items so
- 37:55he was shocked that it was a play
- 37:57written by a Greek criticizing his own
- 38:00country culture so Jesus - it's
- 38:04something that's difficult to do and get
- 38:07away with no notice no rules at all she
- 38:11doesn't know guru politics - there
- 38:13aren't any taking oh so much static in
- 38:16here so very tasty huh taking out the
- 38:19kill Kohaku
- 38:21I mean window no Quattro no go see solo
- 38:25come on we are public never gets on
- 38:29Monday
- 38:29Julian's arrest immaculate not dokkan
- 38:32dokkan game of triangle so this idea of
- 38:35being from a country that completely
- 38:37annihilates another and then to write a
- 38:40play from the point of view of the
- 38:42victims side and not just write a play
- 38:44about I put it in a public forum so
- 38:46something incredibly to do not only in
- 38:48his time but today so the quarter of all
- 38:53of us is also a sequel to the tool
- 38:56and we thought the will and encouraged
- 38:59to do that was who was impressed by
- 39:01thankful teach time us today what
- 39:03there's not only cover the nothing so
- 39:06kind of God in Muskego
- 39:07mob we should I do you know the
- 39:11community so when you decide to get in a
- 39:16kind of enemy relationship with another
- 39:18like for example when Bush got involved
- 39:21in the Iraq war
- 39:24he called them evil right come on carpet
- 39:29doing the law courses to convince guys
- 39:32do if there's nobody well muffled
- 39:35examples and so what he understood with
- 39:39that languages it's okay to kill them
- 39:41okay so they well should never do so in
- 39:49any human being if you're under the
- 39:52right circumstances if your threat you
- 39:54have the capacity to kill another human
- 39:56being you have a lot you all today
- 39:58regardless of the country you're in no
- 40:00China Russia which is a big spike on
- 40:03Kenya I set up a blog it's once you have
- 40:08a mortal enemy the will and the ability
- 40:12to kill your peers you don't think any
- 40:15boy get that kills them to do so what
- 40:22happens is you there's a suspension of
- 40:25judgment there's a suspension of
- 40:26thinking of whether what you're doing is
- 40:28good or not you're in that relationship
- 40:30and so you have permission especially
- 40:33there never says you can like to do that
- 40:35to use anymore let's give them all a bit
- 40:37of a CC not acceptable economically so
- 40:41he thinks it's important for you know
- 40:43you know political leaders to come out
- 40:45and have strong opinions and make strong
- 40:48actions at times that's that's obviously
- 40:50necessary for the world to continue
- 40:54listen I gotta go to LA so cuckoo Dino
- 41:00mentality
- 41:00yo Nyoka Cartier so they were modeling
- 41:03animation in stereo
- 41:05200 digitally Kiyoshi a great table
- 41:08tonight
- 41:09but one of the things that's harder to
- 41:11grab and what display does such a good
- 41:12job of is this kind of ancient mentality
- 41:17this ability within the human being to
- 41:20completely annihilate the other still
- 41:22exist that potential still lives in us
- 41:26today the operation of a very modern
- 41:28we'll give you a nagger to be doing in
- 41:30this know this colossal rock isn't he
- 41:32again very optimistic honor and that's
- 41:35why he thinks Greek tragedy is still
- 41:38pertinent today we should be extent over
- 41:41there talking to step towards bit so so
- 41:48it's the sort of thing you know there
- 41:50there are people from modern realism
- 41:52like it said and writers like this that
- 41:55are thought to thought to sort of
- 41:56continue to carry some kind of messages
- 41:58always without their I'm a good
- 42:01extremity a
- 42:02cugino they were controlled initiation
- 42:07running and you are they up to make up
- 42:10initiated but what Greek tragedy is so
- 42:14good at is making very clear the extreme
- 42:17kind of situations in which human beings
- 42:19can find themselves about according runs
- 42:22usual success but nothing did well I
- 42:24guess Digimon delicate so it's the he's
- 42:29presenting situations when which human
- 42:31beings you know cannot find a solution
- 42:34for in their daily lives one also looks
- 42:37good outcomes and shoot kill professor
- 42:39so to connect Fiji so whether its
- 42:41political conflict or military conflict
- 42:44he's attracted to those kinds of
- 42:46problems that don't have an easy
- 42:48solution
- 42:48what does you know Connor I thought a
- 42:50while you don't say cuz I'm a member of
- 42:52the coaching acai gets addicted in
- 42:54Mumbai with a negative CT stick and I
- 42:56dip in semester so basically what is
- 42:59choosing place
- 43:00he tried to find things that don't have
- 43:03any of the solution just in thinking
- 43:04about the way he leaves his daily life
- 43:06when he when he runs up against the
- 43:08conflict written about in these plays
- 43:10that he can't right away figure out how
- 43:11to solve
- 43:12that's what pulls him in there so
- 43:14hopefully tomorrow
- 43:15lucky my back is gonna so this medium -
- 43:19team so does neck and Achilles there no
- 43:22I will explode okay
- 43:23now put in so cool come a little more
- 43:28that's right that's far enough
- 43:31vamos the most famous example and you
- 43:35feel that the Greek tragedies are the
- 43:37plays that you know have the most
- 43:39extreme and most clear conflicts that
- 43:43are attractive to so their dismay that
- 43:49developer to mimic a lie kappa we can't
- 43:54examine under the right person our motto
- 43:58now that you know China Indonesia the
- 44:01use coupons now especially what s you
- 44:05are this we need a protection ah so put
- 44:10no guru pool guru no mama no cognizable
- 44:13decides to do not coming any corrupted
- 44:17me the Surgeon General Thomas so one of
- 44:21the things he thinks is important into
- 44:22understanding any culture understanding
- 44:25one's own culture is to go outside of it
- 44:27right to travel outside of it so you get
- 44:29a kind of objectivity so - you are more
- 44:32look at the opportunities so
- 44:36the way he began I was going to to
- 44:38Europe in degree and the next major step
- 44:41outside of Japan that he made with on to
- 44:43the to Russia
- 44:45what's gorgeous really nice doctors
- 44:47right well he did a production of King
- 44:49Lear at the Moscow Art the senior-most
- 44:53cooperation McQueen don't love you baby
- 44:56and they're still doing is training
- 44:57there today what's going to get up to
- 44:59but no longer business and
- 45:01King Lear is not part of the
- 45:04the repertory that they performed it so
- 45:06know much about America give me my
- 45:08sandwich and then you know before he
- 45:10went to Russia he was also regularly in
- 45:12the United States and had a lot of
- 45:14interest here so uh but he kept started
- 45:17in the dorm I mean he killed and then
- 45:20after being here he started to think
- 45:21about what is capitalism
- 45:25it was the undervalue our whole Qaeda
- 45:28within them not that kill time see the
- 45:30nominal I they stay focused at the
- 45:33curriculum what some of its country and
- 45:35so the years that he was here in the
- 45:37United States was right before
- 45:38perestroika right before the iron
- 45:40curtain fell and the Communist
- 45:42experiment was shown not to work so he
- 45:45was wondering what happened with you
- 45:47Matthew opium was not condoms
- 45:49very thought of site chosen simply to
- 45:53think of a night
- 45:55so there are not our medical cost unit
- 45:57capitalism or say corseted mm okay so
- 46:00hope I succumb Thank You Mia so one of
- 46:03the reasons why he's so interested in
- 46:05China now is it's it's still rampant
- 46:08capitalism but it's state capitalism its
- 46:11County this capitalism there's no
- 46:13election so you you you sort of have to
- 46:16be the capitalist there it's not
- 46:18democratic it's state capitalism he's
- 46:20wondering like how's that going to hold
- 46:22up for a very to orphanages you can it's
- 46:24something that's actually if you look at
- 46:26history it's actually never happened
- 46:27this sort of a people will judge
- 46:29somebody what we're stood thickness and
- 46:32there's people that are really
- 46:33interested in want to continue with that
- 46:35way that is going there's other people
- 46:37that are very much against it
- 46:39skirt Subarnarekha whopper bested
- 46:41pathologies but in any case it's having
- 46:45a huge influence on the world right now
- 46:47dr. Bernard is Roberto Clemente
- 46:49I'm coming in southern Russia
- 46:51unaccompanied well iota for you did you
- 46:54keyboard very much day so if you look at
- 46:56historically the national socialist
- 46:58socialism or communism or or all of
- 47:03those movements that have been in Europe
- 47:04in the 20th century they had a huge
- 47:06influence over the entire world
- 47:08so there's aa no people what it did
- 47:12Mowbray get to the clock
- 47:14and when that experiment failed
- 47:18you had play robotic Beckett and
- 47:20Aravalli UNESCO showing up talking about
- 47:23the way Searle and only the conflicts
- 47:25that those ideas created left behind
- 47:29Alma it's got more remarkable Roddick
- 47:32enough to conjure more suited to show
- 47:35and he's wondering now make that sort of
- 47:37era of wasteland and of ending of an
- 47:41ideal is coming to the night of the days
- 47:43perhaps did not set up means I got much
- 47:46she's almost a hundred others to go to
- 47:49the mountain soon as she never has no
- 47:50car like that the puppy thereby equal to
- 47:52like a Jew let's dig in that every
- 47:53ghetto so not doing it another two-year
- 47:55experiment on them people yeah I do not
- 47:58everybody has this idea the American
- 48:00Dream and it's good to have that in a
- 48:02passionate about that but maybe there's
- 48:04a kind of deception that's going on
- 48:05kinda got you what Joe does right now
- 48:09there's a big China dream going on a lot
- 48:12of people are behind that in China
- 48:14harmonica don't sign on lorry etiquette
- 48:17OE what so screaming for you of course
- 48:19there is a critical voice about that
- 48:22idea but there's a large force that
- 48:25believes in that is moving that idea
- 48:27forward so we're gonna develop a more
- 48:31image to display and sucky things
- 48:33extinct with the book on a dock thank
- 48:36you think uh dying is yours it'll come
- 48:39back as well
- 48:39anything odd will kill me a multi
- 48:42superstar Terry know it's a ministry and
- 48:44so really the idea of you know how the
- 48:47feeder in China is going to respond to
- 48:48that it's an interesting moment
- 48:50especially when you look at theater in
- 48:53the process of making theater via
- 48:54language via the body we have the weight
- 48:57groups and rules are formed
- 48:59it's an interesting moment but there's
- 49:01no kamae got the most spider attack or
- 49:04Angela papa
- 49:05according to very nice job for most so
- 49:07these are vintage the this is kind of
- 49:10the base of his thinking and he sort of
- 49:13set that out for you my mother you go to
- 49:16a time and so he doesn't have any more
- 49:18to say I'll pause devised new favorite
- 49:22now you just have to see the play
- 49:23my still smokin up Phileas done he sort
- 49:27of he sort of you know with a stream of
- 49:30consciousness explanation of what was
- 49:31going on he went there and here this
- 49:34will you say belladonna is a topical
- 49:38elemental energy no dump dump any time
- 49:41for called a compiler stimuli even a
- 49:44good idea usually at night it was a
- 49:46thought for sick I would only time be
- 49:49paying idiot because people thought of
- 49:53thermodynamics so instead of in
- 49:56responding to each of these questions
- 49:57individually he really wanted to give
- 49:59you first an idea of his worldview and
- 50:02why he thought to make theater in the
- 50:04first place and to get the base ideas
- 50:06behind that clear to you thank you very
- 50:12much
- 50:13what is your very first memory of
- 50:15theater ever foundational qku again I
- 50:23thank you for the past you know she was
- 50:30there Apatow
- 50:35bounnam no no me no me no dizzy samples
- 50:41so we grew up in a household where there
- 50:46were musicians who accompanied the
- 50:49Bunraku a traditional form of puppetry
- 50:52in Japan which is called Bloomberg they
- 50:55in this case they were operated with
- 50:59with strip all day for the 7/7 because
- 51:02of their game campaign and next to that
- 51:05puppet is a musician playing a shamisen
- 51:07a string doesn't lamentable much of the
- 51:13what the building because they have you
- 51:15sorry I gotta do what they are we
- 51:20haven't and so at the same time as you
- 51:22play there's a there's a vocal
- 51:24localization
- 51:28here's another gimmick when you have to
- 51:30sit and say that with your knees on the
- 51:32ground to sit on your heels okay well
- 51:34these are mostly and then for example
- 51:37you see there and over there there's an
- 51:38old man Mitchell walks in and when he
- 51:41was in elementary school he remembers
- 51:43seeing this and so the old man sitting
- 51:47there said come over here he was playing
- 51:50the shamisen sit got there oh she makes
- 51:56all these voices the other night does it
- 51:58go up it and he was really terrified by
- 52:00these sounds that were coming from a
- 52:01spot and and and expressions in his face
- 52:05as he may be sound and play virginal he
- 52:13thought he's gonna die he thought it was
- 52:17going to be like Mishima Yukio you know
- 52:19committing harakiri and you know from
- 52:26this kind of intense body the boiling
- 52:28would come she City it seemed like a
- 52:30kind of hysteria so he tried not to look
- 52:44because was so it was too much for him
- 52:46so when he sort of shift his body not to
- 52:48look someone behind it like hit him on
- 52:50the back look I know sound well don't do
- 52:54that the work at all ug composted she'd
- 52:57be there and you may know this but if
- 52:59you sit in and say that for a long time
- 53:01on your knees you know sooner or later
- 53:02you're going to lose circulation in your
- 53:04in your calves offspring you gots the
- 53:07United you can't really relax when
- 53:09you're in this position keep your
- 53:13tension you keep your position you want
- 53:15the other on that I hate Japanese
- 53:17culture
- 53:21Hey and they thought god this is cedar
- 53:28that I never want to do this absolu got
- 53:33green hair for what I thought is I'm
- 53:35gonna go study French literature and I'm
- 53:38not out there we already see bins it'll
- 53:40never come here we've done that and so
- 53:42he when every moment he had he read
- 53:44French literature whether he was in the
- 53:46bathroom a toilet wherever whatever he
- 53:49was doing he would try to escape that
- 53:54was his first memory haha you got so
- 53:58much character works in psyche on it but
- 54:02lately I think I was but you know well
- 54:04that was a good experience to him could
- 54:08I just go home sir but it was this
- 54:10shocking to the system it was hard to
- 54:13get through and if you see these
- 54:17traditional forms of Asian theater now
- 54:19in Indonesia or China what how do what
- 54:23is the future of that what is this
- 54:24intervention what is this what is he
- 54:26praying that whatever used to really do
- 54:27my informational to attend to
- 54:39I'm in the research to become a famous
- 54:42reporter the English original engine
- 54:46Alabama definitely the two McGraw took
- 54:51personal physical safe culture they
- 54:55watch over cotton so the clinic has been
- 54:58Indonesia and Japan China are different
- 55:00obviously but in the case of China
- 55:02you know the different dynasties you
- 55:05know changed the way the culture
- 55:06developed over history for very changing
- 55:08often in an economy is Oakland Oakland
- 55:10musicals boom boom so basically the it
- 55:14came out of an agricultural you know -
- 55:17nope I don't live in before suburban do
- 55:20so before before the agricultural
- 55:25civilization existed in in China there
- 55:28was a kind of civilization is that was
- 55:30driven by by horses are you of course
- 55:33you don't put significant you have to
- 55:36love you over here you see it and
- 55:37another big difference is that in China
- 55:40there's the use of the chair rights of
- 55:43your connection to the floor is
- 55:44different you know what don't tell me to
- 55:46go what also in Japan you would sit on
- 55:49top of tatami round with strong
- 55:52connection remember it's in the
- 55:54Nakamatsu even within the house you
- 55:56would sit directly on various
- 55:58information on your people and because
- 56:00of that there's a little bit more of a
- 56:02connection with Indonesia and Japan you
- 56:04know what you didn't know who this girl
- 56:06and we have no Union and also in Japan
- 56:10the use of rights and fields and rice
- 56:13paddies and planting within water these
- 56:17are multiple this cut up front against
- 56:19your own us no controversy on this and
- 56:21through doing that kind of a little
- 56:24budget planting you you get a different
- 56:27sort of you develop a different
- 56:28sensitivity in your feet something needs
- 56:30a mushroom he's going to show you quick
- 56:33see there nope on the wire does these
- 56:35are observable so if you just kind of
- 56:38jump into the rice paddy you're gonna
- 56:40slide and sink into it raises as you may
- 56:43other place it's it's it's soft so in
- 56:45order not to sink on it you need to walk
- 56:47at certain ways so the centavo but are
- 56:49looking up for a spluttering
- 56:51you have to hold on with your core with
- 56:53your center of gravity to keep your
- 56:54balance and not sink suddenly can't
- 56:56double what everything else so you hear
- 56:58you keep cheating you hold over the
- 57:00other night to find another market must
- 57:05mark a night if you cook UK if you can't
- 57:08keep your next clear line with your
- 57:10centers you walk through the rice paddy
- 57:12the the way you distribute the right
- 57:14seats isn't going to be easy
- 57:17monetization is little cent on what on
- 57:19female corn soda also doesn't so how
- 57:22you're able to control your Center is
- 57:24you as you cross the rice paddy to
- 57:26distribute the seed becomes very
- 57:28important there's good on you all know
- 57:30if it all supports and if you look at
- 57:32sumo wrestlers there's a similar
- 57:34phenomenon were sorters Jubal's we're
- 57:37also in judo is it other much so there
- 57:42are no Universal missus if they have to
- 57:44make a quick cross they keep the level
- 57:46of their Center the same same in the
- 57:48know and when you cross the space the
- 57:51height of your Center is the same can
- 57:53open you what you know so do you so
- 57:54every much good in China that exists but
- 57:57total sumo but it's more up and down
- 58:00Beijing's more about the center rises
- 58:02and falls more informational motojima
- 58:05Cristiano Indonesia as you go to dinner
- 58:08on your mother walk tomas koroa
- 58:09very sort of your question - if you look
- 58:13at it in an Asian culture there's more
- 58:15of a connection to the ground and
- 58:16there's still in the everyday life there
- 58:18there's you know religious ritual from
- 58:20the Islam from in because in do culture
- 58:22it still exists in everyday life in so
- 58:24you can see that connection very clearly
- 58:26in those ritual so no institution must
- 58:28order the sodium Judy came on okay more
- 58:33intonation some
- 58:34so Judy and I we fight anymore for
- 58:37example spent a lot of time in Indonesia
- 58:38watched by the way of course when she
- 58:40was young
- 58:41watching the way the traditional
- 58:43performing artists would you may need
- 58:45sueance re-conquer
- 58:49soon as i ones are so quickly understood
- 58:53which I wanted the way they could
- 58:56quickly lower their centre close to the
- 58:58ground
- 58:58well neither would eat authorities
- 59:00Indonesian stuff that's something he did
- 59:04recently in an audition
- 59:05it won't do out a minute so we shut up
- 59:07when he had the Indonesian actors face
- 59:10rock bumps come out and then suddenly
- 59:13they all from a City reunion even even
- 59:17though
- 59:17Clytemnestra was speaking her text she
- 59:20sees anybody wanting but soon Oakland in
- 59:25Indonesia
- 59:26you have everyone basically able to do
- 59:28that very flexible in this part of their
- 59:29body and in Japan nowadays that actually
- 59:31flexibilities my statue will be missing
- 59:33for me but it going away and I'm also a
- 59:36mother also in Islamic and ceremonies
- 59:44there's a strong connection to the floor
- 59:49you want you on it for you got polka
- 59:51performance open over in the ledgers you
- 59:54excuse so in Japan in the house you have
- 59:57the tatami or the straw man that you're
- 1:00:00walking on but in Indonesia it directly
- 1:00:02with your on the ground that there's
- 1:00:03this really enjoyed with you in it
- 1:00:05so that's a big difference look at it
- 1:00:07against you know what what is not sahaja
- 1:00:09maternal nice time there you know you
- 1:00:13could go to show so one of the most
- 1:00:16noticeable differences is you know for
- 1:00:18example you go to crease and you see
- 1:00:20that the feeders are made of stone
- 1:00:22there's got a point high tonight so also
- 1:00:24the commercial beer came home okay you
- 1:00:28can't use your feet in a dynamic way you
- 1:00:30can't stomp you can't do some new key
- 1:00:33training on that space maybe stone
- 1:00:35you'll hurt yourself
- 1:00:36that our particle concerts going on mr.
- 1:00:40City of Concord
- 1:00:41what sort of marginal you in order to
- 1:00:43develop sensitivity in your feet in
- 1:00:46Bondi Rafiq Anita Anita it's a space
- 1:00:49that's able to be pliable the surface
- 1:00:53mother yeah when you want you know
- 1:00:59moment of love medical Nigel's
- 1:01:00collectimus photo
- 1:01:01so in Indonesia they still have that you
- 1:01:04know connection reliable earth in Japan
- 1:01:06now it's a westernized they were losing
- 1:01:10it's become Americanized I was trying to
- 1:01:14sort of avoid that before before we take
- 1:01:17maybe one or two of the audience
- 1:01:18questions really one question or toga
- 1:01:22this incredible dream or vision of the
- 1:01:26for the theater and for the world so
- 1:01:29it's kind of a very local place but also
- 1:01:32such a global place over the decades
- 1:01:35does he think is the theater a global we
- 1:01:38all have to sink in global connections
- 1:01:40now we see God the way doesn't work it's
- 1:01:48like a guru put honest and absolutely
- 1:01:51group so there we negotiate in Navarre
- 1:01:58nine York issued on the stake is super
- 1:02:00difficult October tokens so his reason
- 1:02:03for going to toga knows if you don't
- 1:02:05know toga is a small hamlet in the
- 1:02:07mountains of hand and he brought his
- 1:02:09company there and the reason he went
- 1:02:10there was we wanted to figure out how to
- 1:02:12create a group
- 1:02:14there's nothing about but I did another
- 1:02:18store butters are so crisp about it yeah
- 1:02:20well you know cover the mistake so she
- 1:02:25took Chanel too so in the case of ballet
- 1:02:29classical ballet there is a process
- 1:02:32through which you're able to become part
- 1:02:33of a group of ballerinas where you need
- 1:02:35to transform your body to be able to
- 1:02:37enter into that grammar right so of
- 1:02:40course Georgia bar they almost know
- 1:02:43and musicians have a grammar they need
- 1:02:46to become proficient at it in order to
- 1:02:48be part of the conversation again the
- 1:02:52other room Wow not a group of cases
- 1:02:56already and so he thought what do I need
- 1:02:59to do to create a kind of theatrical
- 1:03:00grammar what how do I create a group
- 1:03:03that shares such a grand for you both oh
- 1:03:06come on
- 1:03:06this also thought you died like a circle
- 1:03:10I did switch the little bro cases
- 1:03:12already do you gonna stop well one way
- 1:03:15is to have a great writer and to have a
- 1:03:17group of performers that are around that
- 1:03:20wider oh nice oil grandma okay
- 1:03:23oh no no what were kicked it over so you
- 1:03:26thought that matter to go over the group
- 1:03:28located in the first well one thing
- 1:03:31that's important you need to
- 1:03:32economically support that group right do
- 1:03:35you have
- 1:03:36you know chunk of money and you evenly
- 1:03:38distribute that to the people that are
- 1:03:41there and that's one way to support the
- 1:03:43group right to keep it together yeah so
- 1:03:45so warm up or does it very openly nice
- 1:03:47toy dinosaur place you gotta move my
- 1:03:49face festival for bill amended but if
- 1:03:52you look at summative okay well if you
- 1:03:55look at music even if you have a great
- 1:03:58composer that composer alone not
- 1:04:01necessarily what makes a group of
- 1:04:03musicians able to play together engaging
- 1:04:07form a group
- 1:04:08so without the optimum so what but what
- 1:04:12can I do in the theater I thought what
- 1:04:13could I do in the theater to make a
- 1:04:15group possible my poor self thought
- 1:04:17Sodom dismayed diagonals I had a
- 1:04:19two-pronged approach that spoke to raw
- 1:04:22cut I'll go screams easy fella thoughts
- 1:04:25go through the wound pull the Dharma
- 1:04:28realm I'll kill you su esposa and so the
- 1:04:31first thing was to create a physical
- 1:04:33grammar that all the actors could share
- 1:04:36discuss II got audience mokuba see
- 1:04:40organist allowed to run across so most
- 1:04:42famous lies
- 1:04:44so no space nahhh so much so that
- 1:04:47showcases a rocket engine a cup coconut
- 1:04:50aminos
- 1:04:51chorus you can also this neck after the
- 1:04:54g'tok or space madness and adoptionism
- 1:04:56real atmosphere suits good pass miss you
- 1:04:59go and another really another really
- 1:05:02important part of this is the creating
- 1:05:04with a group a relationship with a space
- 1:05:07right much in the way that religious
- 1:05:10groups have a very special relationship
- 1:05:12with a place of worship yoga theater
- 1:05:15company needs to have a space in which
- 1:05:17they work in a deep relationship that's
- 1:05:19developed in which they develop grammar
- 1:05:21one of Tata cottage state o Muslims so
- 1:05:25the Suzuki mistletoe - you could go to a
- 1:05:27local a whole subsidy Quito genki-dama
- 1:05:31mommy took on a big job lost I got
- 1:05:33scooped unique money so there were two
- 1:05:36basic things he wanted to do in toga
- 1:05:38create a method which would you know be
- 1:05:41supporting of his style that all the
- 1:05:44members of the group would share and
- 1:05:45then to have that group from their own
- 1:05:48efforts create a space you can create a
- 1:05:51relationship with that space so early
- 1:05:53sucio coma donor naughty monkey so if
- 1:05:55you if you know sushi you know that
- 1:05:59norimaki you do wrapping in nori seaweed
- 1:06:02I roll right okay let doc would you know
- 1:06:05could see cup of liquid suitable to you
- 1:06:14so one of the reasons why sushi rolls
- 1:06:18work is because the rice sticks together
- 1:06:21neither your none distributed oh it's
- 1:06:24all sushi rice it's all been cooked a
- 1:06:26certain way with vinegar and it sticks
- 1:06:28together sort of that support ESP cut
- 1:06:31off Marga Nino DMACC know do would be my
- 1:06:34but that alone isn't enough you need to
- 1:06:35wrap a bunch of nori around it to keep
- 1:06:37it really together
- 1:06:40Nora Holden opponent is their commander
- 1:06:44stories for you
- 1:06:45don't I have sushi no no sushi no no
- 1:06:48debugging so that the ideas that you
- 1:06:51have all the pieces of rice sticking
- 1:06:52together and they're surrounded by than
- 1:06:54the nori seaweed this ha ha ha ha go to
- 1:07:00nor'easter stories floating up good good
- 1:07:03together nice tuna Matthew so awesome so
- 1:07:06you need Virginia the the fact that all
- 1:07:09these pieces of rice to share a similar
- 1:07:11quality and they can stick together and
- 1:07:13you need the nori around them to keep
- 1:07:16the shape so the the nori the seaweed is
- 1:07:24the space couldn't in no not before
- 1:07:29whole and the thing that makes the
- 1:07:31pieces of rice stick together is the
- 1:07:33grammar this is a training so they look
- 1:07:35good basically your honor
- 1:07:38I thought to do that and I personally I
- 1:07:45think I sure why not and he realized
- 1:07:52that also result of a pigeon digs you
- 1:07:53prefer then he realized to really make
- 1:07:56sticky rice in the purest way and mmmn
- 1:08:01in the most thorough way he had to go
- 1:08:04outside of the city people are too
- 1:08:05distracted in the big city they can't
- 1:08:07concentrate to really transform
- 1:08:09themselves and so that was a choice
- 1:08:12together about the one would up to the
- 1:08:14worry that do you this thing so if the
- 1:08:16more so so long you know what does this
- 1:08:19what a thoughtful brother I'm gonna come
- 1:08:21picking me not even question sister
- 1:08:26Superboy has commenced so the other main
- 1:08:29reason why he wanted to go to toga is he
- 1:08:33wanted to create a place where it would
- 1:08:35be possible to encounter the other it's
- 1:08:37something in Japan that's actually very
- 1:08:39difficult it's a
- 1:08:41Jonah's society and it's difficult to
- 1:08:44have meaningful connections with people
- 1:08:46outside of Japanese society sort at all
- 1:08:50you don't know finish the right mud
- 1:08:51Marcus is a musical Christmas
- 1:08:54click respected spectacle and so in toga
- 1:08:57and the way it exists now is there's
- 1:08:59every summer people from up to 20
- 1:09:02countries come and gather there and they
- 1:09:05cross pollinate they influence each
- 1:09:08other and different points of view are
- 1:09:10possible to encounter
- 1:09:11well what do you do then door didn't
- 1:09:13open from there so here we have Ellen
- 1:09:17Lauren who's with musica respect only
- 1:09:20should not also have Tom Hewitt who's a
- 1:09:22star of Broadway musicals we all know
- 1:09:24doing with the other books we performed
- 1:09:27in pieces that were performed in English
- 1:09:29and Japanese
- 1:09:30just as elements double score here on
- 1:09:32the blue plus for the capers present and
- 1:09:34then the bunch of actors from the Moscow
- 1:09:38Art Theater came to toga and trained
- 1:09:40there what was you all really good all
- 1:09:44right so good and then a entire class
- 1:09:47from the central academy of drama and
- 1:09:49China has just recently been in toga as
- 1:09:52well the big toys as well it's a
- 1:09:54facility that has five feeders have a go
- 1:09:57to need about it and 150 people can can
- 1:10:01stay where the dormitories that are
- 1:10:02there so you really did even go Google's
- 1:10:06voice and that's ago Michigan for
- 1:10:09students Oh concept sort of a
- 1:10:11pseudonymous
- 1:10:12and it's so his idea was then this kind
- 1:10:16of place was necessary a place where you
- 1:10:18could in a very focused way encounter
- 1:10:21the other encounter someone from a
- 1:10:22culture different than your own and and
- 1:10:24many and to see what you shared Joseph
- 1:10:27in the Omo so this chap started on the
- 1:10:30book filters to our kids I'm sorry oh
- 1:10:33thank you Scott
- 1:10:34don't you look wonderful typically
- 1:10:36what's too much business but it's the
- 1:10:38kind of idealistic situation which would
- 1:10:41be incredibly expensive to do in a place
- 1:10:43like Tokyo so it could afford or
- 1:10:46judgments about this path conscious
- 1:10:48focus and also it's because we live in
- 1:10:50this era of terrorism you know whatever
- 1:10:53you do in a place
- 1:10:54like you know Tokyo or New York you're
- 1:10:58constantly being you know people are
- 1:11:00looking at what you're doing you're
- 1:11:02being surveyed from the outside sort of
- 1:11:05their des College in skylight Google and
- 1:11:08you have to be really careful with time
- 1:11:09so hundreds oh and you have to be
- 1:11:13careful how you organize the space right
- 1:11:15so school yeah I'm not very very much so
- 1:11:18you know in order to have a free use of
- 1:11:22time and space
- 1:11:24the only choice is to go up into the
- 1:11:26mountains the only people that are you
- 1:11:31know the only surveillance we have up
- 1:11:32there in the mountains are the you know
- 1:11:33the raccoons that cool they're the only
- 1:11:37ones who are watching what we're doing
- 1:11:39the disappearing report about this this
- 1:11:43last year there was a big incident in
- 1:11:44toga with a huge landslide go to mr.
- 1:11:48Gong took the run was like there was a
- 1:11:50you couldn't get in and out of the town
- 1:11:53for about where you have a newspaper and
- 1:11:55it's a town where only 400 people really
- 1:11:58have any more sort of every size up
- 1:12:01there and then the people that live
- 1:12:03there now after this landslide they all
- 1:12:04want to leave but supposed to go
- 1:12:06clapping everybody know and so he is
- 1:12:08thinking well that's pretty good now I
- 1:12:09can really do whatever I want
- 1:12:12please I thought skeptic would have
- 1:12:14loved him so he might have to ask the
- 1:12:17mark Martin's March another kind of
- 1:12:20every animal are the ones that will give
- 1:12:23you guys an idea bro we call SWAT can
- 1:12:26you connect a vacuum which so Duke
- 1:12:28experienced so because all of this
- 1:12:32happened now they actually have a lot
- 1:12:33more support from the central government
- 1:12:35so top of them all of this land and
- 1:12:39facility is he's able to use other
- 1:12:41for you something good out of a
- 1:12:45catastrophe maybe we'll take one or two
- 1:12:47questions and then maybe TCG make a
- 1:12:50short statement but thank you again
- 1:12:52thank you very much I also want to point
- 1:12:53out that Martin Siegel after whom this
- 1:12:55data actually is named brought him I
- 1:12:57think in 91 to the accessible of the
- 1:12:59International Arts I don't know if you
- 1:13:01remember Marty Segal who also brought
- 1:13:04him before the last but one of the
- 1:13:05really great shows the dynamics is so I
- 1:13:09don't know how to do that but being
- 1:13:11really Tadashi Suzuki has to be out at
- 1:13:1312:15 so we have one or two a question
- 1:13:16so one here and two I'm my second busy
- 1:13:22way of life
- 1:13:22hi I'm curious how you feel you're
- 1:13:25teaching your work is transformed since
- 1:13:29the 1970s to now she was ultimately from
- 1:13:33equality I'll say what I feel perfect
- 1:13:45happened has it changed
- 1:13:50no ha ha how about your mama papa
- 1:13:55but the world has changed Dada how to
- 1:14:00gain the scuttle appointment so he's you
- 1:14:04know the way that women had gorgeous
- 1:14:06there's a lip there you know you check
- 1:14:10up on me the angle changes of the angle
- 1:14:14of his work his approach changes as the
- 1:14:16world a still very acidic optimism
- 1:14:19imagine the the strategy is his
- 1:14:22directorial strategy and the training
- 1:14:25itself I haven't really changed that
- 1:14:27does but the marginal a nice colors that
- 1:14:29all not equal to after all the demand to
- 1:14:31fix
- 1:14:34I mean of course he's a director and he
- 1:14:38has had a natural organic progression
- 1:14:40he's gone from one text to know there's
- 1:14:42different things he's been interested in
- 1:14:44but his strategy and his philosophy has
- 1:14:48expanded but I haven't really because
- 1:14:50the essence of it haven't changed
- 1:14:52no visual devote don't want the knife do
- 1:14:54it some people when they meet him they
- 1:14:57say you haven't changed at all but that
- 1:15:03those are usually Japanese people what
- 1:15:08before you've gone I deduced the
- 1:15:10obstacle not to go to rural to students
- 1:15:11so if the the philosophical point of
- 1:15:15view is his worldview he's kept a clear
- 1:15:20hang a clear point of view that's that's
- 1:15:23developed me shifted it as the world is
- 1:15:25shifted other sides I'm hoping that
- 1:15:27that's nothing what did you do in the
- 1:15:30book culture is the body there's a thing
- 1:15:32called an body part the lonely village
- 1:15:35and that's something he wrote thirty
- 1:15:37years ago the mother will caught the
- 1:15:40light but the ideas that are expressed
- 1:15:43in that article still hold true them
- 1:15:45what's lesson today you're filming it
- 1:15:47might they met he may even be some
- 1:15:49stripper committed he may even have more
- 1:15:52resolution behind those ideas today than
- 1:15:54he did when he wrote it but the you know
- 1:15:56don't belittle Perkins in poetry
- 1:15:57discipline you know every day Japan is
- 1:16:01becoming more and more in an urbanized
- 1:16:03country so people are leaving from the
- 1:16:06countryside still today so all the
- 1:16:09arguments is making in that are still
- 1:16:11quite true so we all know that Greek
- 1:16:16tragedy and those a Shakespeare more or
- 1:16:18less play very significant your work in
- 1:16:20your way of thinking and you also
- 1:16:23mentioned a lot about French literature
- 1:16:24since you love bridge your literature so
- 1:16:27I wonder how French literature has
- 1:16:29changed your weight of thought or your
- 1:16:33practition if any
- 1:16:47what I'd forgive me not disconnect rest
- 1:16:54of the chakra biggest family Rebecca's
- 1:16:57Kutcher spoken like a scientist
- 1:16:59so Justin you know it was something
- 1:17:02especially when he was young with it
- 1:17:04really influenced him and the one the
- 1:17:06writer who were influenced in most was
- 1:17:07in fact Samuel Beckett this work so she
- 1:17:10was just give out the water give you so
- 1:17:12he makes poor needy people six people
- 1:17:15check over for big his he focuses most
- 1:17:20of his work on four playwrights write
- 1:17:21Europe videos Shakespeare Chekhov and
- 1:17:24Samuel Beckett the Euro funnels us from
- 1:17:27the South window for the woman I love
- 1:17:29Vic Pena he in terms of working with a
- 1:17:33European playwrights he almost never
- 1:17:35does work beyond those four it's a big
- 1:17:39IRA stone but it's a good group he did
- 1:17:42do a version of Cyrano de Bergerac but
- 1:17:45besides that thanks to those forge and
- 1:17:48hopefully a little fun a fixed order to
- 1:17:50put this ball 6/4 a big generally if
- 1:17:55those photo killed max he's not
- 1:17:57interested in anything else thank you so
- 1:18:02we now come to the last segment of the
- 1:18:05great publishers of a dashiki spoken
- 1:18:08many others here Terry to speak a bit
- 1:18:11about their relation what they do with
- 1:18:13them it also there will be a signing of
- 1:18:15some of the books here just as you name
- 1:18:17in case we have one or want to get one
- 1:18:20or want to have fun somewhere else that
- 1:18:21is a possibility now and to take away
- 1:18:25from the many great things and
- 1:18:26significant things he said but say for
- 1:18:28ten years the company went into a small
- 1:18:30mountain village up on the arm and
- 1:18:33without any
- 1:18:36influence of the outside and became a
- 1:18:39global global force I think this is
- 1:18:41quite a quite a stunning achievement -
- 1:18:43and to have done that so Terry what we
- 1:18:49had the credible honor of having to
- 1:18:51Sasha Suzuki come to our conference in
- 1:18:531984 and that started a long
- 1:18:56relationship with my first philosophy -
- 1:18:58czeisler and I think the little short
- 1:19:01film you'll see later will explain some
- 1:19:02of those connections a little bit fuller
- 1:19:05but two years later we have the honor of
- 1:19:07publishing the original book which was
- 1:19:10the way of acting which is now being
- 1:19:12supplanted by cultures the body 30 years
- 1:19:16later thanks to all the fantastic worth
- 1:19:19of Cameron Steele just a short note
- 1:19:22about who we are where the air
- 1:19:23communications group were the National
- 1:19:26Organization for nonprofit theater in
- 1:19:27the United States our role is and
- 1:19:30nurtures support and celebrate the
- 1:19:32theatre form in America we do lots of
- 1:19:35regrading programs lots of convenings
- 1:19:37lots of resources for equity diversion
- 1:19:41inclusion work we also publish and
- 1:19:44that's where our connection with mr.
- 1:19:46Suzuki is here and so 30 years later
- 1:19:50we're so thrilled that we could bring
- 1:19:52out the book the way we wanted to bring
- 1:19:54it out so thank you thank you bye now at
- 1:19:57big of all sponsors
- 1:20:04oh yeah I'm agile - over rethrick I've
- 1:20:12little diamond voice parable because
- 1:20:14it's a deductible so he's going to be 78
- 1:20:18the fear he doesn't know if he's going
- 1:20:19to make it back to the US go
- 1:20:21thanks for having me
