  4. 0:12i gallivant these craggy lands like a
  5. 0:15reckless desperado
  6. 0:18i'd given up the normal things security
  7. 0:21career
  8. 0:23to be a desert wanderer and a solo
  9. 0:26mountaineer
  10. 0:28i've purposefully courted death it was
  11. 0:31part of my plan
  12. 0:33the goal is not the mountain peak but to
  13. 0:37improve the man
  14. 0:39pursuing thrills and challenges after
  15. 0:42many a brush with death
  16. 0:45yes there have been many times i thought
  17. 0:48i might be taking my last breath
  18. 0:53i've lived through storms and avalanches
  19. 0:55often times alone
  20. 0:58i'd enjoyed the luck of an irishman no
  21. 1:01major broken bones
  22. 1:04and when the crisis passed away i went
  23. 1:06back to what i do
  24. 1:07[Music]
  25. 1:09i've learned many and many lessons but
  26. 1:12perhaps i've missed a few
  27. 1:15in april of 2003 i was canyoning alone
  28. 1:20in blue john canyon utah
  29. 1:23a slot canyon of sandstone
  30. 1:27nobody else knew where i was just
  31. 1:29somewhere in utah
  32. 1:32my self-reliant arrogance
  33. 1:36almost a fatal flaw
  34. 1:40[Music]
  35. 1:46i was descending casually then to my
  36. 1:48shock and alarm
  37. 1:51i knocked a giant chalk stone loosen it
  38. 1:53pinned my right arm
  39. 1:56the rocket weighed 800 pounds it was
  40. 1:58wedged against the wall
  41. 2:01my right hand smashed between the two my
  42. 2:03chances they looked small
  43. 2:05[Applause]
  44. 2:06i had but a pint of water left and very
  45. 2:09little food
  46. 2:12a couple of
  47. 2:13burritos
  48. 2:14and my own fortitude
  49. 2:18the boulder wouldn't budge an inch
  50. 2:19though i tried and tried and tried
  51. 2:23if only i'd been sisyphus and could roll
  52. 2:26it up the side
  53. 2:29[Music]
  54. 2:34i knew i had but days to live if i could
  55. 2:36not get free
  56. 2:39hypothermia was possible but my chief
  57. 2:42enemies
  58. 2:44were thirst and dehydration they would
  59. 2:46probably do me in
  60. 2:49i'd fight my fate up to my death but
  61. 2:51where could i begin
  62. 2:54i tried to chip the rock away with my
  63. 2:56cheap multi-tool
  64. 2:58[Music]
  65. 2:59it only made the knife blade dull
  66. 3:02which later would prove cruel
  67. 3:05i finally realized my last chance was to
  68. 3:07amputate my arm
  69. 3:10but my knife could never cut the bone
  70. 3:13i realized with alarm
  71. 3:17[Music]
  72. 3:23on the fifth day i had no food likewise
  73. 3:26my water gone
  74. 3:28i knew that i would perish soon but my
  75. 3:31will to live was strong
  76. 3:34desperate i decided to drink my own
  77. 3:36liquid waste
  78. 3:38i did manage to gag it down but it was a
  79. 3:41bitter taste
  80. 3:43i knew i must cut off my arm no other
  81. 3:46choice was left
  82. 3:48desperation has a cruel logic
  83. 3:52when you're faced with death
  84. 3:54i knew that i might bleed to death in
  85. 3:57fact the odds were high
  86. 4:00i carved my own epitaph
  87. 4:03on the rock while standing nigh
  88. 4:06[Music]
  89. 4:11i fashioned a rough tourniquet webbing
  90. 4:13and carabiners
  91. 4:16conditions were quite primitive in my
  92. 4:18surgical arena
  93. 4:21i cut away the flesh and tendons it was
  94. 4:24painful work
  95. 4:26i snapped my radius and ulna just using
  96. 4:29strength and torque
  97. 4:31i was borderline delirious but there
  98. 4:34arose in me
  99. 4:36a violent exultation
  100. 4:39for i was finally free
  101. 4:42i crawled out of the canyon goodbye my
  102. 4:45would-be tone
  103. 4:48propelling down a long shear cliff
  104. 4:52i began my long trek home
  105. 4:56[Music]
