- 0:00Hello, a very warm welcome. So,
- 0:01Argentina fans are celebrating, England
- 0:03supporters are mourning after the South
- 0:06Americans beat England 2-1 to book a
- 0:09place in football's World Cup final.
- 0:17So, the scene there in the Argentine
- 0:19capital, Buenos Aires, as tens of
- 0:21thousands of fans took to the streets to
- 0:24collectively celebrate their team's
- 0:26victory. Many were painted in blue and
- 0:28white national colors. The celebrations
- 0:31lasted long into the night. Argentina
- 0:33will now play Spain in the final on
- 0:35Sunday. Captain Lionel Messi called the
- 0:38semi-final victory over England quite a
- 0:41special one. That's an understatement.
- 0:44Well, these were the faces of some of
- 0:45the disappointed English supporters at a
- 0:48fan zone in London.
- 0:50England's 60-year wait to reach a World
- 0:52Cup final goes on. They had taken the
- 0:55lead, but the holders overturned with
- 0:57two late goals, one in stoppage time.
- 1:00Lots of reaction to come, but first,
- 1:02let's get this report from our sports
- 1:04editor, Dan Roan, who watched the match
- 1:06in Atlanta.
- 1:08>> So, Argentina it is then who now have
- 1:09the opportunity to become only the third
- 1:12team in the history of the World Cup to
- 1:14defend their title when they take on the
- 1:15European champions, Spain, on Sunday in
- 1:18New Jersey. England, meanwhile, have to
- 1:21somehow lick their wounds, dust
- 1:22themselves down, and prepare for the
- 1:23match nobody wants to be part of, the
- 1:26third-fourth playoff in Miami. There'll
- 1:28be a question now over Thomas Tuchel and
- 1:30his future. The FA brought him in
- 1:32because he was seen as a knockout
- 1:33specialist, had pedigree when it came to
- 1:36the Champions League. He was meant to
- 1:37take on the progress that had been
- 1:39achieved by his predecessor, Gareth
- 1:41Southgate, and get England over the
- 1:43final hurdle, but in truth, they're
- 1:45right where they were in 2018 when they
- 1:47lost the World Cup semi-final to
- 1:49Croatia. They got the Euros in a couple
- 1:50of years time. Uh but the FA will need
- 1:52to make a decision now on whether they
- 1:55keep faith with Tuchel. They've had
- 1:57fantastic memories during this campaign,
- 1:59most obviously that win over Mexico at
- 2:02the Azteca.
- 2:03But in the final reckoning, once again,
- 2:05they are the nearly men of international
- 2:07football. And Argentina can now prepare
- 2:11for the final.
- 2:12>> Well, this was the reaction of the
- 2:14Argentina captain Lionel Messi on making
- 2:16it into the World Cup final.
- 2:21>> It's crazy what this group has achieved
- 2:23once again, reaching the World Cup
- 2:25final. We come from being world
- 2:27champions, and we've been the best over
- 2:29the last 4 years. No matter who it hurts
- 2:32or what they say, today once again we've
- 2:35placed ourselves among the two best
- 2:36teams in the world, and that shows that
- 2:38everything we did is not by chance, and
- 2:41no one gave us anything. Reaching two
- 2:43world finals in a row is no small feat,
- 2:46and this group achieved it.
- 2:49>> It certainly isn't, you've got to hand
- 2:50it to them. Well, the England captain
- 2:51Harry Kane and the manager Thomas Tuchel
- 2:53spoke to the media after the match.
- 2:56>> For now, you everyone has to process
- 2:58what's just happened. Everyone's gutted,
- 2:59I'm gutted for
- 3:01all the boys, all the staff, everyone
- 3:02behind the scenes, because we know how
- 3:04much everyone puts in to to being a a
- 3:06successful
- 3:07national team.
- 3:08Um and when you're so close, when you're
- 3:1010 plus minutes away, and and it it
- 3:12slips out your hands like that,
- 3:14um yeah, obviously the lads are
- 3:16devastated. For now, we just have to
- 3:19to take it on the chin. There's nothing
- 3:20we can do. We can congratulate
- 3:21Argentina,
- 3:23um and then we go away and try and
- 3:24improve.
- 3:25>> I think it was a very close match. I was
- 3:27happy the way we played it. Very close
- 3:30match, like I said, and and we had the
- 3:31moment and took it to our advantage,
- 3:33went 1-0 up. I think that's what happens
- 3:36in these kind of of matches that are
- 3:38totally
- 3:39totally even. I think at that point of
- 3:41the match that we it was
- 3:44also deserved, not undeserved, that we
- 3:46that we take our moment and then go 1-0
- 3:48up.
- 3:49Um unfortunately and and strangely
- 3:52enough, it it marked then a complete
- 3:55momentum switch in the game. Argentina
- 3:58played with more risk,
- 4:00played with more rhythm.
- 4:02>> Well, with his assessment of what went
- 4:04wrong for England, here's our sports
- 4:05reporter, Joe Linsky.
- 4:07>> Here in the UK, there will be many
- 4:10England fans waking up with that
- 4:12all-too-familiar sinking World Cup
- 4:15feeling. There have been many
- 4:16heartbreaking moments in the long
- 4:1960-year wait for England to win this
- 4:22tournament, but few that feel like such
- 4:25a wasted opportunity, and one really of
- 4:28their own making as this match in
- 4:30Atlanta because the situation with 5
- 4:32minutes left of normal time was that
- 4:35England led this World Cup semifinal by
- 4:38one goal to nil, and yet they managed to
- 4:40lose it even before extra time. And many
- 4:43people will see the reason for that as
- 4:46being the tactical setup when England
- 4:49scored through Anthony Gordon on 55
- 4:52minutes. Now, between that point and the
- 4:5492nd minute when Argentina took the
- 4:56lead, England had just 12%
- 5:00possession, 88% to Argentina. They had
- 5:03wave after wave of attack, and with that
- 5:05control of the ball and those level of
- 5:08opportunities as the defending world
- 5:10champions, that it always felt
- 5:11inevitable that they were not only going
- 5:13to just get back into this game, but
- 5:15actually take a total grip on it as
- 5:17well. And as the inquest now starts for
- 5:20England over the next few days, it will
- 5:22turn, as Dan mentioned there, to Thomas
- 5:24Tuchel. This coach employed at great
- 5:26expense to be the successor to Gareth
- 5:29Southgate. He is employed, he is
- 5:30contracted through to the Euros, which
- 5:33England will co-host in 2 years' time.
- 5:36But that fear, that anxiety that befalls
- 5:39England at so many major tournaments, it
- 5:41struck them down here once again. And
- 5:44Argentina were deserved winners, and
- 5:46they will now look to become just the
- 5:47third nation to win the World Cup in
- 5:50back-to-back editions.
- 5:52>> Well, Argentina also face the prospect
- 5:54of disciplinary action from FIFA and as
- 5:57Joe explains, it's after their players
- 5:58celebrated the win over England with a
- 6:00banner in support of their country's
- 6:03claims to the Falkland Islands.
- 6:06>> You can see it there. It was unfurled on
- 6:07the pitch. It translates into English as
- 6:10the Falklands are Argentina's and this
- 6:12as we have spoken a lot in the build-up
- 6:14to this match is all to do with the
- 6:17Falkland Islands, the
- 6:19the the the territory that these two
- 6:21nations fought a war over back in 1982.
- 6:24There was also a referendum on the
- 6:26sovereignty of the Falkland Islands back
- 6:28in 2013 which emphatically showed that
- 6:31the islanders wanted to remain British,
- 6:33but this is still a live political issue
- 6:36in Argentina and it added for a added
- 6:38for a an extra spice really to the
- 6:41build-up to this match. Um
- 6:43the players of Argentina have been
- 6:45pictured in videos actually singing
- 6:48about the Falkland Islands and
- 6:51how much it means to them in terms of
- 6:53getting one over England having had all
- 6:56this history with them. So, yes, they
- 6:58can expect probably a fine from FIFA for
- 7:00this. There is some precedent actually
- 7:02for this exact type of incident cuz back
- 7:05in 2014 Argentina unfurled a banner with
- 7:08those same words and they were were
- 7:10given a fine by FIFA. I don't think
- 7:11England fans can get too excited that
- 7:13anything more stringent than that will
- 7:15be placed on Argentina. They're not
- 7:16going to be kicked out of the World Cup,
- 7:18but there will be some punishment from
- 7:20FIFA.
- 7:21>> Well, punishment or not, Argentinian
- 7:23goals were celebrated by jubilant fans
- 7:26in Buenos Aires and our reporter Imogen
- 7:28McCarthy joined an Argentina watch party
- 7:31in South London. She gave us a sense of
- 7:33the atmosphere there after their win.
- 7:36>> What a result for Argentina and for
- 7:40Argentinian fans here in South London.
- 7:43THIS IS PROBABLY AS CLOSE AS WE going to
- 7:45get TO BUENOS AIRES OVER THE NEXT FEW
- 7:48NIGHTS. AFTER ENGLAND scored that first
- 7:51goal, you could have heard a pin drop.
- 7:54The mood was so down, was so low. And
- 7:59then that equalizer, and then within
- 8:01minutes a second goal. The entire cinema
- 8:06here in South London where we are
- 8:08erupted. And the party is just going to
- 8:11keep going. Everyone is singing and
- 8:14dancing. And they need to SAVE THEIR
- 8:17VOICES BECAUSE IT'S NOT GOING TO BE EASY
- 8:20AGAINST Spain on Sunday. BUT AT THE
- 8:22MOMENT THEY ARE HOLDING ON TO HOPE THAT
- 8:24THEY are going to make it two in A ROW
- 8:28ON SUNDAY IN NEW JERSEY
- 8:31for Messi and for the entire country of
- 8:34Argentina. An enormous deal and everyone
- 8:37here is certainly going to be glued to
- 8:40that match.
- 8:41>> Eamon McCarthy there and well done for
- 8:43her for not losing her voice. There has
- 8:45been so much reaction on social media to
- 8:48England's defeat including from Prince
- 8:50William who posted, "The fight and
- 8:53belief that you have shown has inspired
- 8:55us all. The most complete England team
- 8:58in a tournament, hold your heads high."
- 9:01And Sir Keir Starmer shared a similar
- 9:03sense of pride saying, "The passion and
- 9:06energy that you've shown representing
- 9:08the badge has made us all proud." It has
- 9:12indeed. So, despite the heartbreak for
- 9:16England, obviously a lot of pride in
- 9:19what they've achieved. Well, my
- 9:20colleague Nada Feak spent the match with
- 9:22some England fans in a bar in New York.
- 9:26>> It was an emotional rollercoaster for
- 9:28England fans here at Smithfield Hall in
- 9:30New York. First that heated start to the
- 9:32match creating so much tension. Then the
- 9:35excitement believing that England could
- 9:37be headed to the final against Spain.
- 9:40And then that gutted feeling, that
- 9:42realization that their World Cup dreams
- 9:44were dashed by their heated rivals
- 9:46Argentina. And you could tell by the
- 9:48reaction here that this was about so
- 9:50much more than a football match.
- 9:52>> In all of the times that I've watched
- 9:54England and do World Cup campaigns, I
- 9:56think this was the one where we really
- 9:58thought we were within touching distance
- 10:00of a final.
- 10:01>> 60 years. 60 years it's been since we've
- 10:04won.
- 10:04>> Felt like it was right. The team were
- 10:06playing well.
- 10:07>> Yeah, absolutely gutted I was.
- 10:09>> They were holding on and Argentina, the
- 10:11third time they've done it in this
- 10:12tournament.
- 10:13>> I'm a bit shattered right now. Should
- 10:15have never sat back.
- 10:17Should have been on the front foot after
- 10:19that first goal.
- 10:20>> Watching them, I mean making it this far
- 10:22to begin with and now playing against
- 10:23Argentina, I mean
- 10:26it all shows, the hard work is showing
- 10:27off.
- 10:28>> I really, really thought England was
- 10:29going to get there.
- 10:31Come on Spain. That's all I say. Come on
- 10:34Spain.
- 10:34>> Supporters here wanted to welcome
- 10:36England to New York for the final
- 10:38against Spain. Instead, they will go
- 10:40against France in Miami for third place.
- 10:43And it will be Argentina against Spain
- 10:46for the final.
