- 0:00Are women ignored in media? Let's talk
- 0:01about pioneers. Now, a lot of fans argue
- 0:03that female characters, specifically
- 0:04pioneers, are systemically ignored
- 0:05compared to their male counterparts,
- 0:07which is generally considered
- 0:08unfortunate because these characters are
- 0:09understood to be foundational blueprints
- 0:11in regards to their respective genres. A
- 0:12lot of fans notice a glaring pattern in
- 0:14regards to institutional neglect as well
- 0:15as historical minimization. A lot of
- 0:17fans point out that characters like
- 0:18Batman and Superman get decades of
- 0:19narrative consistency. Wonder Woman's
- 0:21publication is generally considered an
- 0:23ever-revolving door, the likes of which
- 0:24make it harder for casual audiences to
- 0:25get a baseline understanding of Wonder
- 0:27Woman and her history. Despite Diana
- 0:28being a part of the DC Trinity, there's
- 0:30a noticeable disparity in regards to
- 0:31multimedia investment in her character.
- 0:33And women don't just suffer from this on
- 0:34the corporate side, but also the fandom
- 0:35side. Alongside Dragon Ball Z, Sailor
- 0:37Moon was one of the major reasons why
- 0:38anime had a big boom in the '90s. But
- 0:40despite that, mainstream retrospect is
- 0:41only a priority on Pokémon, Akira, and
- 0:43Dragon Ball Z, minimizing Sailor Moon as
- 0:45a niche girl show and not an
- 0:46industry-defining juggernaut. That
- 0:47coupled with the fact that Sailor Moon
- 0:49as a show is targeted towards a younger
- 0:50female audience, fans often express
- 0:51frustration about the fact that
- 0:52female-centered media is often looked
- 0:54down upon and not taken seriously by
- 0:55broader culture critics as well as fans
- 0:57alike. And I see a lot of parallels to
- 0:58the lack of public respect these
- 0:59characters get to the way that women's
- 1:00achievements are often overlooked in
- 1:02reality. The minimization of Wonder
- 1:03Woman and Sailor Moon in their
- 1:04respective genres is a digitalized
- 1:05reflection on how society overlooks
- 1:07female accomplishments. Media doesn't
- 1:08exist in a vacuum. The same systemic
- 1:10biases, psychological patterns, and
- 1:11cultural hurdles that women face are
- 1:12often mirrored in how these
- 1:13entertainment industries and fans treat
- 1:15[music] these iconic female characters.
