Are Leaders Born or Made — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:02What do you think?
- 0:03>> I think that absolutely leaders are
- 0:07made.
- 0:08>> Mhm.
- 0:08>> All these fantastic leaders that you
- 0:10just named
- 0:11>> Yeah.
- 0:12>> were many years in the making.
- 0:14>> Yeah.
- 0:14>> If you think about any one of those
- 0:16leaders, and they developed many skills
- 0:19along the way.
- 0:20>> Mhm.
- 0:20>> Public speaking skills,
- 0:22>> Mhm.
- 0:22>> values and belief systems that every
- 0:26leader needs to adopt, by the way.
- 0:28>> Yeah.
- 0:28>> Part of becoming a leader is to have a
- 0:31set of values and beliefs that you
- 0:34uniquely hold
- 0:35>> Yeah.
- 0:36>> that drives all that you do. An example
- 0:39of that is what is your philosophy of
- 0:42human behavior?
- 0:42>> Mhm.
- 0:44>> Do you trust people and empower? Do you
- 0:46control people in order to make them do
- 0:49things? So, you need to make decisions
- 0:51on your own. That's part of the
- 0:52leadership development journey.
- 0:54>> Yeah.
- 0:54>> But as you described all these fabulous
- 0:57leaders, they learned the skills
- 0:59>> Mhm.
- 1:00>> around how to mobilize, how to motivate,
- 1:02how to set an agenda, how to um
- 1:05convey and communicate that agenda, how
- 1:07to persuade. Um there's there's this
- 1:11Aristotle
- 1:13uh um
- 1:14triangle
- 1:15>> Mhm.
- 1:16>> that I love where he talks about ethos,
- 1:19pathos, and logos as uh leadership
- 1:23skills.
- 1:24>> Mhm.
- 1:24>> Ethos speaks to credibility.
- 1:27>> Yes.
- 1:28>> All the leaders you described have
- 1:29credibility, and they've earned those
- 1:31credibility. They weren't born with the
- 1:33credibility.
- 1:33>> Mhm.
- 1:34>> Logos
- 1:35>> But wait wait a second. Does that You
- 1:37know, if you come from a big family, if
- 1:39you were like XYZ kid of XYZ, don't you
- 1:43get a lot of credibility given to you
- 1:45anyway?
- 1:46>> No.
- 1:46>> Okay.
- 1:47>> I- I- If you think about those folks,
- 1:49they might have some advantages, some
- 1:51privileges,
- 1:52>> but this credibility is absolutely
- 1:55earned, and it's it's um, it manifests
- 1:58in
- 1:59what you say, what you do, and it's
- 2:02observable.
- 2:03So, in fact, um, unless you have
- 2:07developed these uh, credentials over
- 2:10time or credibility over time, it's very
- 2:13difficult to have people follow you.
- 2:15The second uh, piece that Aristotle has
- 2:19advanced called logos is incredibly
- 2:21important because it speaks to logical
- 2:23reasoning. That's a skill.
- 2:26People have to believe that you have
- 2:28logical reasoning, the capacity to um,
- 2:31intuit based on data and other things.
- 2:34And finally, uh, he talks about pathos.
- 2:37That's communication skills.
- 2:39That's the ability to persuasively
- 2:42convey to to others. Those are learned
- 2:46skills. No one is born with them. Now,
- 2:48I'll grant you this.
- 2:50Uh, there's this concept called genetic
- 2:52endowment by a Stanford University uh,
- 2:55scholar uh, by the name of Schwartz who
- 2:58says that we all are born with certain
- 3:01characteristics. We do have them, and
- 3:03that's part of what we use in our
- 3:06careers and our lives. We can't ignore
- 3:08that. So, someone with a booming voice,
- 3:11you use that to communicate, but the
- 3:13booming voice doesn't define your
- 3:14leadership. So, there there are genetic
- 3:17endowments that are part of our makeup,
- 3:20but and and and once we know how to use
- 3:24them towards good and leadership, we can
- 3:27apply them. So, there's that piece of it
- 3:30in terms of our birthright, but
- 3:32otherwise, leadership is a social
- 3:34science. Leadership is a skill. You're
- 3:37absolutely not born as a leader. You
- 3:40become one.
