  1. 0:04hi
  2. 0:04hello there welcome to apply methodology
  3. 0:08to a design
  4. 0:12this video introduces a network design
  5. 0:15methodology
  6. 0:16and presents guidelines for building an
  7. 0:19effective network design solution
  8. 0:21it includes the following sections the
  9. 0:25cisco service oriented network
  10. 0:26architecture
  11. 0:28network design methodology identifying
  12. 0:32customer requirements
  13. 0:34characterizing the existing network and
  14. 0:36sites
  15. 0:37and using the top-down approach
  16. 0:41to network design
  17. 0:46the cisco service oriented network
  18. 0:48architecture or sona
  19. 0:50so this video lecture begins with an
  20. 0:53introduction to the cisco vision of
  21. 0:55intelligent networks
  22. 0:56and the service oriented network
  23. 0:59architecture
  24. 1:00sona architectural framework so this
  25. 1:03video lecture is not only intended for
  26. 1:05cisco environment
  27. 1:07okay so we will be just using this
  28. 1:10architectural framework
  29. 1:12on our network design so the life cycle
  30. 1:15of the network
  31. 1:16and a network design methodology based
  32. 1:19on the lifecycle are presented
  33. 1:22each phase of the network design process
  34. 1:25is explored
  35. 1:26in detail starting with how to identify
  36. 1:30customer requirements including
  37. 1:32organizational and technical goals and
  38. 1:35constraints
  39. 1:37because many customers build on existing
  40. 1:39network
  41. 1:40and at existing sites this video lecture
  42. 1:43also presents
  43. 1:44methods of characterizing that
  44. 1:47existing network and those sites so a
  45. 1:50top-down approach
  46. 1:52to design and structure design
  47. 1:54principles
  48. 1:55is presented the design process includes
  49. 1:59a discussion about
  50. 2:00building a prototype or pilot
  51. 2:03and appropriate content of a design
  52. 2:06specification
  53. 2:08so the video lecture concludes with a
  54. 2:11discussion
  55. 2:12of the design implementation process
  56. 2:18the cisco service oriented network
  57. 2:20architecture the extremely rich
  58. 2:23variety of application level business
  59. 2:25solutions available today
  60. 2:27and the need to integrate these
  61. 2:30applications
  62. 2:31drives the need for a new network
  63. 2:33architecture
  64. 2:34this section introduces the cisco vision
  65. 2:37and framework
  66. 2:38that enable customers to build a more
  67. 2:41intelligent
  68. 2:42network infrastructure the cisco zone
  69. 2:45architectural framework shifts
  70. 2:47the view of the network from a pure
  71. 2:50traffic transport-oriented view
  72. 2:52towards a service and application
  73. 2:54oriented view
  74. 2:59cross-off applications so business
  75. 3:02drivers
  76. 3:03for a new network architecture new
  77. 3:06business requirements
  78. 3:07which are basically the growth of
  79. 3:10applications
  80. 3:11and the evolution of it combined to
  81. 3:14drive the need
  82. 3:14for a new network architecture in
  83. 3:18today's business environment
  84. 3:19intense competition and time to market
  85. 3:22pressures are prompting enterprises to
  86. 3:25look for new i.t solutions
  87. 3:27that can help them better respond to
  88. 3:29market and customers demand
  89. 3:32so consumers are asking for new products
  90. 3:35and service offerings
  91. 3:36and they want them fast
  92. 3:39so they are also demanding improved
  93. 3:41customer service enhanced customization
  94. 3:43flexibility
  95. 3:45the greater security all of course at a
  96. 3:48lower cost
  97. 3:51i.t evolution from connectivity to
  98. 3:54intelligent systems
  99. 3:56so motor network connect multiple
  100. 3:58resources and
  101. 4:00information assets within the
  102. 4:02organization
  103. 4:03as well as provide access to external
  104. 4:05resources
  105. 4:07in this environment the iot model has
  106. 4:10evolved
  107. 4:11from mainframe to client server models
  108. 4:15to internet applications as illustrated
  109. 4:17here in the figure
  110. 4:19so the cisco vision of the next space of
  111. 4:22it evolution
  112. 4:23is a real-time infrastructure that
  113. 4:25integrates the network
  114. 4:27and the applications as one system
  115. 4:31so we've started with
  116. 4:35terminal to mainframe connectivity and
  117. 4:38then when the client server architecture
  118. 4:40were introduced
  119. 4:42you've got pocket networks you've got
  120. 4:44the demand for networks to connect
  121. 4:47multi-vendor devices and then
  122. 4:51the evolution of the internet okay so
  123. 4:54you've got pervasive
  124. 4:55open networks enable client server to
  125. 4:58extend beyond corporate boundaries
  126. 5:01and there the tcp ip was introduced
  127. 5:05until such time that we have this
  128. 5:07real-time infrastructure
  129. 5:09the network applications they work
  130. 5:12together
  131. 5:12as integrated systems via of course
  132. 5:16the exchange of messages so
  133. 5:19organizations are finding
  134. 5:22that networking is no longer just about
  135. 5:25connectivity
  136. 5:26rather network intelligence is starting
  137. 5:29to play a role
  138. 5:30in improving business performance and
  139. 5:32processes
  140. 5:34intelligence enhances the network's role
  141. 5:36as a foundation for enabling
  142. 5:38communication
  143. 5:39collaboration and business success
  144. 5:44with increased awareness of the
  145. 5:45applications that operate on the network
  146. 5:47foundation
  147. 5:49the network becomes an active
  148. 5:50participant in applications
  149. 5:52network management business systems and
  150. 5:56services to enable them to work better
  151. 6:00so the network is the common single
  152. 6:02element that connects and enables
  153. 6:04all components of the id infrastructure
  154. 6:07so organizations need their networks
  155. 6:11to evolve to intelligent systems that
  156. 6:13participate actively in the delivery of
  157. 6:16applications
  158. 6:18to effectively reach the goal of
  159. 6:20improving
  160. 6:21productivity reducing time to market
  161. 6:26greater revenue lower expenses
  162. 6:29and stronger customer relationships so
  163. 6:32an effective network provides the
  164. 6:34foundation
  165. 6:35for transforming business practices
  166. 6:43new business requirement so the network
  167. 6:46touches everything
  168. 6:48evolving from connectivity to
  169. 6:51intelligent systems
  170. 6:53participate actively in the delivery of
  171. 6:56applications and network services
  172. 6:58and provide the foundation for
  173. 7:01transforming business processes
  174. 7:06traffic conditions in a converged
  175. 7:07network
  176. 7:09so modern network must support various
  177. 7:11types of traffic
  178. 7:13specifically you've got voice and video
  179. 7:16traffic
  180. 7:18voice application traffic the mission
  181. 7:21critical traffic
  182. 7:23transactional traffic network management
  183. 7:26traffic
  184. 7:28and routing protocol traffic so
  185. 7:31this mix of traffic greatly impacts the
  186. 7:34network requirements
  187. 7:36such as security and performance so
  188. 7:38security and performance
  189. 7:41is a challenge to the network
  190. 7:43administrator
  191. 7:44systems administrators or network
  192. 7:47managers
  193. 7:48basically you have to balance security
  194. 7:52and performance
  195. 7:54so to help the enterprises cisco has
  196. 7:57developed an intelligent
  197. 7:59information network or the iim
  198. 8:06cisco intelligent information network so
  199. 8:09that is intelligence in the network
  200. 8:11so integrating intelligence into the
  201. 8:13network involves aligning
  202. 8:15network and business requirements so to
  203. 8:18accommodate today's and tomorrow's
  204. 8:19network requirements
  205. 8:21the model vision of the future includes
  206. 8:24the intelligent information network
  207. 8:26or iin so that is as a strategy
  208. 8:30that addresses how the network is
  209. 8:32integrated
  210. 8:33with businesses and business priorities
  211. 8:37so this vision encompasses the following
  212. 8:39features
  213. 8:41okay integration of network resources
  214. 8:44and information assets that have been
  215. 8:46largely unlinked
  216. 8:49the modern converged network with
  217. 8:51integrated voice
  218. 8:52video and data required that it
  219. 8:55departments
  220. 8:56and other departments traditionally
  221. 8:58responsible for other technologies
  222. 9:00more closely link the ik infrastructure
  223. 9:04with the network so also
  224. 9:07intelligence across multiple products
  225. 9:09and infrastructure layers
  226. 9:11so the intelligence built to each
  227. 9:14component on the network is extended
  228. 9:18okay network wide and applies end-to-end
  229. 9:22lastly active participation of the
  230. 9:24network in the delivery of services and
  231. 9:26applications
  232. 9:29with added intelligence it is possible
  233. 9:32for the network to actively manage
  234. 9:35monitor and optimize services
  235. 9:38and applications delivery across the
  236. 9:40entire id environment
  237. 9:43so basically the ii and technology
  238. 9:45vision consists
  239. 9:46of three paces you've got integrated
  240. 9:49transport
  241. 9:50integrated services and integrated
  242. 9:53application
  243. 9:55so the key point for intelligence in the
  244. 9:57network would be
  245. 9:59the intelligent network offers much more
  246. 10:02than basic connectivity
  247. 10:04so bandwidth for users and access to
  248. 10:07applications
  249. 10:09it offers an end-to-end functionality
  250. 10:11and centralized
  251. 10:13unified control that promotes true
  252. 10:16business
  253. 10:16transparency and agility
  254. 10:20so as mentioned earlier the intelligence
  255. 10:23or the iin
  256. 10:24comprises of three paces
  257. 10:28so pace one is integrated transport
  258. 10:32so everything data voice
  259. 10:36and video consolidates onto an ip
  260. 10:39network for secure
  261. 10:40network convergence so by integrating
  262. 10:43data voice and video transport into a
  263. 10:46single standard
  264. 10:47based modular network organizations can
  265. 10:50simply
  266. 10:51network management and generate
  267. 10:54an enterprise-wide efficiencies
  268. 10:58phase two integrated services when the
  269. 11:02network infrastructure is converged
  270. 11:04id resources can be pulled and shared or
  271. 11:08virtualized to flexibly address
  272. 11:12the changing needs of the organization
  273. 11:14so by extending this virtualization
  274. 11:16concept
  275. 11:17to encompass server storage
  276. 11:21and network elements an organization
  277. 11:24can transparently use all of its
  278. 11:26resources efficiently
  279. 11:29so business continuity is also enhanced
  280. 11:32because in the event of local systems
  281. 11:34failure
  282. 11:35shared resources across the intelligent
  283. 11:38network
  284. 11:38can provide needed services
  285. 11:42and phase 3 integrated applications
  286. 11:47so this phase focuses on making the
  287. 11:50network application aware
  288. 11:52so that it can optimize application
  289. 11:54performance and
  290. 11:55more efficiently deliver network
  291. 11:58applications to users
  292. 12:00so in addition to capabilities such as
  293. 12:02content caching
  294. 12:04load balancing and application level
  295. 12:06security
  296. 12:08application network services make it
  297. 12:10possible for the network
  298. 12:12to simplify the application and
  299. 12:14infrastructure
  300. 12:16by integrating intelligent application
  301. 12:18message handling
  302. 12:20optimization and security into the
  303. 12:23existing
  304. 12:24network
  305. 12:29the cisco sona is an architectural
  306. 12:31framework
  307. 12:32that illustrates how to build integrated
  308. 12:35systems
  309. 12:36and guides the evolution of enterprises
  310. 12:38towards
  311. 12:39more intelligent networks so using sona
  312. 12:43framework
  313. 12:44enterprises can improve flexibility
  314. 12:47and increase efficiency by optimizing
  315. 12:50applications
  316. 12:52business processes and resources
  317. 12:56to enable it to have a greater effect
  318. 12:59on business so the sauna framework
  319. 13:02leverages
  320. 13:03the extensive product line services
  321. 13:06proven architectures
  322. 13:07and experience of cisco and its
  323. 13:11partners to help enterprises achieve
  324. 13:14their
  325. 13:14business goals so that's what i have
  326. 13:16mentioned earlier
  327. 13:17this is not just applicable for
  328. 13:20cisco equipment and cisco products we
  329. 13:23can apply
  330. 13:24the framework even though we are using
  331. 13:27enan cisco devices
  332. 13:33cisco sona framework layers
  333. 13:36the sona framework as shown here in the
  334. 13:37figure shows how integrated systems can
  335. 13:40allow a dynamic
  336. 13:42flexible architecture and provide for
  337. 13:44operational efficiency
  338. 13:46through standardization and
  339. 13:48virtualization
  340. 13:50so the key point for the sauna framework
  341. 13:53layer would be
  342. 13:54in the sonar framework the network is
  343. 13:57the common element that connects
  344. 13:59and enables all components of the id
  345. 14:02infrastructure
  346. 14:03so the sonar framework defines the
  347. 14:05following three layers here
  348. 14:07okay you've got the network
  349. 14:09infrastructure layer
  350. 14:11interactive services layer and
  351. 14:13application layer
  352. 14:17network infrastructure layer
  353. 14:20so this layer provides connectivity
  354. 14:24anywhere and anytime
  355. 14:27so where all the id resources are
  356. 14:29interconnected across a converged
  357. 14:31network foundation so the id resources
  358. 14:35includes
  359. 14:36servers storage and clients
  360. 14:40so the network infrastructure layer
  361. 14:42represents
  362. 14:43how these resources exist in different
  363. 14:46places in the network
  364. 14:47including the campus branch data center
  365. 14:51enterprise edge one metropolitan area
  366. 14:55network or man and with the
  367. 14:58consideration of having
  368. 15:00a teleworker and organization so the
  369. 15:03objective of this layer is to provide
  370. 15:05connectivity
  371. 15:06anytime anywhere so the network
  372. 15:10infrastructure layer includes the
  373. 15:12network devices and links
  374. 15:14to connect servers storage and
  375. 15:17clients in different places in the
  376. 15:20network
  377. 15:23so the next layer would be the
  378. 15:24interactive services layer
  379. 15:27so this includes both application
  380. 15:30and networking services together with
  381. 15:33infrastructure services
  382. 15:36so this layer enables efficient
  383. 15:38allocation of resources to applications
  384. 15:40and business processes
  385. 15:42delivered through the network
  386. 15:44infrastructure
  387. 15:46so this layer includes the following
  388. 15:48services here
  389. 15:49you've got voice and collaboration
  390. 15:51services
  391. 15:53okay mobility services wireless services
  392. 15:57security and identity services storage
  393. 16:00services
  394. 16:02computing services application
  395. 16:06networking services content networking
  396. 16:09services
  397. 16:10okay uh network infrastructure
  398. 16:13virtualization
  399. 16:15adaptive network management services
  400. 16:18the quality of service is an important
  401. 16:20thing here qos
  402. 16:22and of course the high availability
  403. 16:28last one would be the application layer
  404. 16:30so this
  405. 16:31layer includes business applications and
  406. 16:34collaboration applications
  407. 16:36so the objective of this layer is to
  408. 16:39meet business requirements
  409. 16:41and achieve efficiencies by leveraging
  410. 16:44the
  411. 16:45interactive services layer so this
  412. 16:48layer includes the following
  413. 16:50collaborative applications
  414. 16:52so you've got commercial applications
  415. 16:55internally developed applications
  416. 16:59software as a service or the sas and
  417. 17:02the composite apps
  418. 17:08so what are the benefits of sauna
  419. 17:11including
  420. 17:13this in the organization's planning so
  421. 17:16basically sona provides
  422. 17:19functionality okay supports
  423. 17:22the organizational requirements another
  424. 17:25is scalability
  425. 17:27supports growth and expansion of the
  426. 17:30organizational task
  427. 17:32by separating functions and products
  428. 17:34into layers
  429. 17:35so this separation makes it easier to
  430. 17:38grow the network
  431. 17:40you also have availability
  432. 17:43so provides the necessary services
  433. 17:46reliably
  434. 17:47anywhere anytime performance
  435. 17:51provides the desired responsiveness
  436. 17:54throughput
  437. 17:55and utilization on a per application
  438. 17:59basis
  439. 18:00through the network infrastructure and
  440. 18:02services
  441. 18:03next would be manageability so provides
  442. 18:07control performance monitoring and fault
  443. 18:10detection
  444. 18:12efficiency is also a factor provides the
  445. 18:15required network services
  446. 18:17and infrastructure with reasonable
  447. 18:19operational costs
  448. 18:21and appropriate capital investment on a
  449. 18:23migration path
  450. 18:25to a more intelligent network that is
  451. 18:28via step-by-step network services
  452. 18:31growth and another one
  453. 18:34is not listed here which is security
  454. 18:37provides for an effective balance
  455. 18:39between usability and security while
  456. 18:42protecting information assets and
  457. 18:44infrastructure from inside and outside
  458. 18:47threats
  459. 18:52so let us summarize the cisco service
