Apple Watch Series 11 VS SE 3 - DON'T BE FOOLED! — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00The Apple Watch Series 11 just got an
- 0:02update, but something else happened that
- 0:03I didn't expect, and that is that Apple
- 0:05also announced the new Apple Watch SE3
- 0:09with way more features than I was
- 0:11expecting, like an always on display, an
- 0:14S10 chip, 5G cellular connectivity, and
- 0:17it makes me wonder if most people should
- 0:19just save their money and get an Apple
- 0:21Watch SE, or is there maybe one really
- 0:25big reason to go for the Series 11 over
- 0:28the SE that makes it worth $150 more?
- 0:31Well, let me answer that question by
- 0:33going over all these new features for
- 0:35the Series 11 and the Apple Watch SE so
- 0:37you can decide which watch is right for
- 0:39you. Now, yes, I am making this video in
- 0:41advance of these being available because
- 0:43the Apple watches are being sold on
- 0:44Apple's website right now. And full
- 0:46disclosure, I do not have these Apple
- 0:48watches on hand, but Apple did keep the
- 0:51same design for the Series 11 as the
- 0:53Series 10. And it even has the same S10
- 0:56chip. And the SE has the same design as
- 0:59the old SE. So, I already know how these
- 1:01watches perform and kind of the key
- 1:04differences living with them each day.
- 1:06So, I think this video will be helpful
- 1:07for a lot of people because people got
- 1:09to make up their minds. Now, one of the
- 1:11first big differences between the Series
- 1:1211 and the SE is the design and the size
- 1:16of the watches. Series 11 has two sizing
- 1:18options, 46 and 42 mm, which is bigger
- 1:20than the SE's 44 and 40mm casing size.
- 1:24Now, for most people, the bigger screen
- 1:25size is a pro. It allows you to see more
- 1:28content. You get bigger watch faces, and
- 1:30the 46 millm size of the Series 11 is
- 1:33almost as big as the Apple Watch Ultra
- 1:363's display. However, some people do not
- 1:39like the design of a big watch. And for
- 1:42most people, the Series 11 is going to
- 1:44take up the entire width of your wrist.
- 1:47So, if you prefer a smaller watch, well,
- 1:49the 40mm Apple Watch SE is currently the
- 1:52smallest watch that Apple sells. Now,
- 1:54despite the Series 11 being larger, it
- 1:56is also thinner than the SE, so it sits
- 1:58closer to the wrist and it's easier to
- 2:00fit under tighter long sleeve shirts,
- 2:02whereas the SE is a little more bulbous.
- 2:05On the plus to the SE's display this
- 2:07year, though, is that it is finally an
- 2:10always on display, meaning that the
- 2:12display no longer turns off when you put
- 2:14your wrist down. You can always see the
- 2:16watch face. Now, although it is an
- 2:17always-on display, it still lacks a lot
- 2:19of the display upgrades that the Series
- 2:2111 has. First of all, the Series 11 has
- 2:23an always on display that is a little
- 2:25bit better because it refreshes at a
- 2:27faster rate. So, you get cool little
- 2:29details like seeing the seconds hand
- 2:31tick when the alwayson display is
- 2:33activated. The Series 11 display is also
- 2:35brighter at 2,000 nits versus the
- 2:371,000nit display on the SE. In indoor
- 2:39use, this isn't a big deal, but on a
- 2:41bright sunny day, that extra brightness
- 2:43does make the screen on the Series 11 a
- 2:45lot more legible. And the Series 11
- 2:47display is also brighter when viewing it
- 2:49at an angle. For me though, the real
- 2:52drawback of the design for the SE this
- 2:54year is well, the color options. Yeah,
- 2:56Apple used to have three color options
- 2:58for the SE, but this year they are
- 3:00limiting it to just two aluminum
- 3:02finishes, midnight or starlight, aka uh
- 3:06black or white. The Series 11 has much
- 3:09broader and better color options,
- 3:10including silver, space gray, rose gold,
- 3:13and my favorite color from last year,
- 3:15the new jet black color, which I think
- 3:17looks so cool. On top of that, you can
- 3:19even make the Series 11 even more
- 3:21premium with optional titanium finishes,
- 3:23which come in natural gold or slate
- 3:26black. These options are more expensive
- 3:28and really drive up the price compared
- 3:30to the SE, but they do also come with a
- 3:32sapphire crystal display, which is less
- 3:35prone to scratching. However, Apple does
- 3:36say that the Series 11 has a new ceramic
- 3:39coating on the glass display that makes
- 3:41it twice as scratchresistant compared to
- 3:43the Series 10 display. Unfortunately,
- 3:45the SE3 display does not get this
- 3:47coating, but it does get a stronger
- 3:49glass that is four times more crack
- 3:52resistant than the SE2. Personally, I
- 3:54have never had a problem with any of my
- 3:56Apple Watches cracking, but based on my
- 3:59experience, every aluminum Apple Watch
- 4:01that I've worn with a glass display has
- 4:04had some sort of hairline scratches
- 4:08after a year of use, while any sapphire
- 4:10display version I've owned on the more
- 4:12premium titanium models has never
- 4:15scratched once. And I bumped this into
- 4:17quite a few things. I'm not sure if the
- 4:19Series 11's new ceramic coating will
- 4:21change this, but all I can say based on
- 4:23the information I have now is that if
- 4:26you hate scratches, the Series 11 should
- 4:28provide a better experience all around.
- 4:30And if you can't can't can't stand
- 4:32scratches, pay extra for that sapphire
- 4:34display. Now, the back of the SE is also
- 4:37made of a nylon composite instead of a
- 4:40mixture of ceramic and metal. So, it
- 4:43technically has a less premium finish on
- 4:45the back, but uh once it's on your
- 4:47wrist, I really never noticed the
- 4:48difference, and it's not like my SE has
- 4:51had any durability issues. Both Apple
- 4:53Watches have the same water resistance
- 4:54up to 50 m, but the Apple Watch Series
- 4:5611 does have a depth gauge to 6 m and a
- 4:59water temperature sensor. Now, one big
- 5:01upgrade on the Series 11 this year is
- 5:03Apple has managed to get a 6-h hour
- 5:05battery life improvement on this model,
- 5:08leading to 24 hours of battery life,
- 5:10which is respectable. That means the
- 5:12Series 11 is in between the battery life
- 5:14of the old Apple Watch Ultra and the
- 5:17Apple Watch Series 10. The SE
- 5:19unfortunately does not get this battery
- 5:21life upgrade and still has the same
- 5:2318our rating as every previous normal
- 5:26Apple Watch model. Now, for most people
- 5:29that probably shouldn't matter. The 18
- 5:31hours of battery life will probably last
- 5:33you through a full day of usage. And the
- 5:36SE3 also gets faster charging. It can
- 5:38get up to eight hours of battery life
- 5:40with just 15 minutes of charging. And it
- 5:42can get from zero to 80% in 45 minutes
- 5:45of charging. The Series 11 does charge a
- 5:47bit faster here and has better battery
- 5:49life. So, you can charge to 80% in just
- 5:51about 30 minutes of charging. Again,
- 5:53small improvements, but nothing
- 5:55life-changing. Now, although the battery
- 5:57has improved on the Series 11, one big
- 5:59thing the SE3 has going for it is that
- 6:02it literally uses the same exact S10
- 6:05chip as the flagship Series 11 and Apple
- 6:08Watch Ultra 3. Meaning, you do not get a
- 6:12speed advantage on the more expensive
- 6:13models. Or rather, you don't get a speed
- 6:16downgrade by going for the cheaper Apple
- 6:18Watch SE. And that, in my opinion, is
- 6:20one of the most important Apple Watch
- 6:22features. The S10 chip runs watch OS
- 6:25very smoothly. Apps load fast and the
- 6:27watch is very responsive, which is
- 6:29important when you mainly interact with
- 6:31the watch with very quick interactions
- 6:33throughout your day. You don't want that
- 6:35slowing you down. That chip also enables
- 6:37the wrist flick gesture and the double
- 6:39tap gesture that used to be exclusive to
- 6:41the higher-end Apple Watch models.
- 6:43Although the SE still is missing the
- 6:45ultra wideband chip, which means it does
- 6:47not have the more advanced precision
- 6:49tracking in the Find My app, but you can
- 6:51still ping your Apple Watch and have it
- 6:53play a sound if you misplace it. But
- 6:55ultra wide chips are kind of becoming
- 6:57increasingly important for things like
- 7:00uh digital car keys. So, make sure you
- 7:03don't need or want a feature like that.
- 7:06Another surprise with the SE is that 5G
- 7:08cellular service was supposed to be one
- 7:09of the flagship S11 features. Then yes,
- 7:11the Series 11 has a 5G cellular option,
- 7:14but this has also come to the Apple
- 7:16Watch SE. So if you are a cellular user,
- 7:19you get the same speed advantages on the
- 7:21cheapest model now. And one bonus thing
- 7:23I love about the Apple Watch SE model
- 7:26every year, and so many people overlook
- 7:28this, is that the cellular Apple Watch
- 7:31SE model is only a $50 upgrade, whereas
- 7:34the Series 11 for the same 5G upgrade is
- 7:38a $100 upgrade. I don't know why the SE
- 7:42cellular option is half the price, but
- 7:44it makes the value proposition of the SE
- 7:46just so much better. Just know that if
- 7:49you do get the cellular option, it does
- 7:51require a plan with your carrier. But
- 7:53those plans are about $10 a month. And
- 7:55when you have them, you can stay
- 7:57connected even when you don't have your
- 7:58iPhone near you. All right, what gives
- 8:00here? The SE has the same chip, the same
- 8:025G cellular service, and the same 64 GB
- 8:05of storage. It gets an always on
- 8:06display. It gets the new sleep tracking
- 8:09score feature. There has to be something
- 8:11more here to make the Series 11 worth
- 8:13the additional $150.
- 8:16And well, I think that does come down to
- 8:18the health sensors. The Series 11
- 8:20continues to have exclusive health
- 8:22sensors, letting you monitor your blood
- 8:24oxygen percentages or take an ECG
- 8:27reading on your wrist to detect if you
- 8:29have an irregular heartbeat. It also
- 8:30gains a new hypertension feature, which
- 8:33can spot signs of chronic high blood
- 8:35pressure and notify you of possible
- 8:37hypertension. That is a pretty big new
- 8:40health feature that should be helpful to
- 8:42lots of users if it works well. Now,
- 8:45yes, I say this every year, the Apple
- 8:46Watch SE does get the most important
- 8:49health sensors, that is the heart rate
- 8:52monitor, which gives you high and low
- 8:53heart rate notifications and gives you
- 8:56accurate calorie burning information for
- 8:58workouts. It also includes fall
- 9:00detection and car crash detection, which
- 9:03have proven to be absolute lifesavers.
- 9:06And the SE is not without a new health
- 9:08sensor. It also gains the temperature
- 9:10sensor just like the Series 11. This
- 9:13lets you track your wrist temperature
- 9:15during sleep and can give you cycle
- 9:17tracking and ovulation estimates.
- 9:19Another feature I can't review. Yes,
- 9:22some people will benefit from the
- 9:23advanced health sensors of the Series
- 9:2511, but as a reviewer, I have to be
- 9:27honest with you. Whether it's blood
- 9:28oxygen sensing, the ECG on my wrist, or
- 9:31ovulation tracking. Well, thankfully, I
- 9:34have not really needed these the entire
- 9:36time I have worn Apple watches, which
- 9:38have been over 10 years at this point.
- 9:40But I get it. It is kind of reassuring
- 9:42to have those sensors, even if you never
- 9:44need to use them. And that is where your
- 9:46buying decision comes in. Do you want or
- 9:48maybe need those more advanced health
- 9:50sensors? Or do you want a larger
- 9:52display? or maybe you want a more
- 9:55premium color or material option, then
- 9:58yes, the Series 11 is a good option at
- 10:02that $400 price point. If you want the
- 10:04flagship Apple Watch model and don't
- 10:06want to compromise or miss out on any
- 10:08feature, this is the one to get.
- 10:11However, I really think now that the SE3
- 10:13has an always on display and the same
- 10:15performance as the Series 11, it is the
- 10:18Apple Watch that most people should buy.
- 10:21At $250, it is a no-brainer and
- 10:24definitely should be the Apple Watch you
- 10:26buy if you are a firsttime user. I love
- 10:28when Apple makes a good budget model.
- 10:31Sometimes they miss and sometimes they
- 10:33don't. And this year, the SE3, it does
- 10:36not miss. This is a great option for
- 10:38anyone looking for an Apple Watch. And
- 10:39I'm going to recommend this thing to a
- 10:41lot of people. All right, but that is my
- 10:43buyer guide on the Series 11 versus the
- 10:45Apple Watch S. I really hope this video
- 10:48helped you out in making a purchasing
- 10:49decision. If it did, all you have to do
