Apple Watch SE 3: 2 months later - it’s the one to get — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00I am a casual smartwatch user and the
- 0:02Apple Watch SE3 is probably the one that
- 0:06most people should get.
- 0:10Okay, this year I did not gravitate
- 0:12toward the more expensive Apple Watch
- 0:14Series 11 or the very huge Apple Watch
- 0:18Ultra. I did not consider the Apple
- 0:20Watch Series 10 at a lower price, too.
- 0:23Instead, I've been wearing this Apple
- 0:26Watch SE3 uh since it was released in
- 0:29September. Is it finally the right
- 0:31balance between budget and features? SE
- 0:35Apple Watches have always been dragging
- 0:38their feet at least a couple of
- 0:39generations behind the mainline models
- 0:43and excluding features that are
- 0:45genuinely cool. Now, we finally got the
- 0:48always on display, which makes the watch
- 0:50look more like a watch and less like a
- 0:53glass pebble on your wrist. And the
- 0:55magical pinch gesture controls or the
- 0:58latest flick gesture control are also
- 1:01here. Not only that, it packs the same
- 1:03S10 chip found inside the Apple Watch
- 1:06Series 11. So you still have ondevice
- 1:09Siri, the mentioned gestures, 5G
- 1:12connectivity if you choose it, and the
- 1:14same lightning fast response. Okay, let
- 1:17me rip off the band-aid and talk about
- 1:20the compromises first. What is the bad
- 1:23about the Apple Watch SE3? Mostly it's
- 1:26the design. Uh quick recap, the Apple
- 1:28Watch has gone through four iterations
- 1:31of design. They mostly made the display
- 1:34incrementally bigger and the bezels
- 1:36around the screen thinner, but the
- 1:39latest models also have a thinner
- 1:41overall body. The Apple Watch SE3 still
- 1:44has the 2018 facelift, so it's two
- 1:48design generations in the past. It's not
- 1:51bad, but you can see it. The new liquid
- 1:54glass watch faces look great on the
- 1:57newer Apple watches. Not so good with
- 1:59this chungus bezel around them.
- 2:01Secondly, your color options are
- 2:04midnight or starite. So, blackish or
- 2:07silverish. I do wish our office unit was
- 2:11the black model to be honest, as it
- 2:13would more seamlessly hide body from
- 2:15bezel from display. It is what it is.
- 2:18The good news is that [music] you can
- 2:20accessorize these Apple watches at will
- 2:23with a plethora of watch bands
- 2:25available, not just from Apple. Um, the
- 2:28market is flooded with third-party
- 2:30offers, most of which can look pretty
- 2:33good and cost you much less than
- 2:36official bands. Then it doesn't have
- 2:38deeper health metrics like the ECG or
- 2:41the hypertension notifications. [music]
- 2:44There is no blood oxygen scanning on
- 2:46this one. It does however include sleep
- 2:48apnea notifications now which is pretty
- 2:51good because a lot a lot of people have
- 2:55sleep apnnea without even knowing it.
- 2:57Okay, how is this smartwatch as an
- 3:00everyday wearable? I really like it.
- 3:02When it comes to synchronized
- 3:04notifications, wrist vibrations, and
- 3:06responding or even picking up a call
- 3:09from your watch, the Apple Watch is
- 3:12still maybe the best smartwatch
- 3:13experience you can have. It just syncs
- 3:16and gels with the iPhone really well.
- 3:19For example, when I have the watch on
- 3:21and I get a notification on the iPhone,
- 3:23the iPhone itself is somewhere out
- 3:25there, it will not vibrate. Only the
- 3:28watch will vibrate obviously because
- 3:30it's on me. Conversely, if I'm actively
- 3:34looking at the iPhone in my hand and
- 3:36chat messages are rolling in, the watch
- 3:39will not annoyingly [music]
- 3:41vibrate my wrist. And I have to tell
- 3:43you, it took Samsung some time to figure
- 3:46that one out, and they still aren't
- 3:48quite there yet. Picking up a call from
- 3:51the watch is not ideal. Uh, but it does
- 3:55work when you're in a dire situation.
- 3:58Your hands are busy, the phone is away,
- 4:00something of the sort. The speaker is
- 4:03loud enough for you to hear it in, say,
- 4:06inside a running car or even on a
- 4:08slightly loud street. The microphone
- 4:11seems to be working just fine as I
- 4:14haven't gotten any complaints from
- 4:16callers in the rare occasion that I have
- 4:18to pick up [music] from my watch. My
- 4:19point is that this core Apple Watch
- 4:22experience is intact here on the Apple
- 4:24Watch SE3 and that's great. Then we have
- 4:27the new LTPO display which Apple doesn't
- 4:30label as wide angle but it's viewing
- 4:33angles are quite wide. We have the
- 4:35ondevice voice memos which come in handy
- 4:39for quick and fleeting ideas. The camera
- 4:41control which I absolutely love for
- 4:44vlogging or long range selfies. I'd say
- 4:47it's pretty durable too. Apple calls the
- 4:49glass crack resistant Ion X glass. Take
- 4:53note, not scratch resistant branding
- 4:55like on the series 11. Let's see. I've
- 4:57been wearing this almost every day for
- 5:00the past 2 months. Inspecting the glass
- 5:03for fine scratches, but still none.
- 5:06Knock on wood. I did drop the watch once
- 5:09while changing the watch bands. Uh, it
- 5:12was from about chest height and it hit
- 5:15the hard tile floor clean. The aluminum
- 5:19got a bit of a dent here, but that's
- 5:21about all the damage it took. Okay, so
- 5:24for fitness tracking, look, I know you
- 5:27can't tell, but I'm not really the most
- 5:29sportsoriented guy out here. Uh, I do
- 5:32however tend to walk as I do try to get
- 5:36these steps in whenever I can. And I
- 5:38have to say the automatic workout
- 5:40detection of the Apple watches is still
- 5:43not great. Like a Samsung smartwatch is
- 5:47pretty quick to figure out, okay, you're
- 5:49walking. It's been this long. I am
- 5:51activating a walk workout for you right
- 5:53now. And then it pauses and it stops the
- 5:56workout pretty consistently when I stop
- 5:59walking.
- 6:01The Apple Watch, not so good. Uh, I
- 6:04walked to a bar the other night and just
- 6:07as I was reaching my destination, the
- 6:09Apple Watch vibrated. Hey, you seem to
- 6:11be walking. Want to activate the
- 6:12workout? I thought to myself, well, I'm
- 6:15almost there, but sure, let's turn it on
- 6:17and let it record the calories or
- 6:19whatever. I walked in and forgot that
- 6:22the workout is on. Half an hour later, I
- 6:25look at my watch. Hey, it says I'm still
- 6:27walking. Okay, there goes that metric.
- 6:29To be clear, it should automatically
- 6:31detect that I've stopped moving and
- 6:33remind me to end the workout manually.
- 6:35Uh, I either didn't get the vibration
- 6:38that time or something went wrong, but I
- 6:41have generally found out that the
- 6:43automatic features are less reliable
- 6:46than on say Samsung uh smart watches. Of
- 6:49course, when you are more deliberate
- 6:51with your workouts and you activate and
- 6:53stop them manually, the Apple Watch has
- 6:55been shown time and again to be pretty
- 6:58accurate and helpful. Most important,
- 7:01you can make custom runs or let the AI
- 7:04coach you to progress. Um, the new coach
- 7:07features which uses AI voice to
- 7:09encourage you and tell you how you're
- 7:11doing compared to your last exercise.
- 7:13[music]
- 7:14U, it's a bit hit or miss. I can see the
- 7:17value in it, but it's so annoying when
- 7:20it kicks in in the middle of your
- 7:22favorite song. You can turn it off
- 7:24entirely, but I don't want that. I just
- 7:27want to be able to skip it and make it
- 7:29stop talking when it interrupts
- 7:32something. For battery life, I've been
- 7:34pretty happy with it. I can get two days
- 7:36of battery life if I turn off the always
- 7:39on display feature. The one thing I wish
- 7:42it had is an easier way to toggle always
- 7:45on. uh like why isn't it in the control
- 7:48center over here? Why do I have to go
- 7:50into settings and scroll way too much to
- 7:53find it? So yeah, uh one day use, sure,
- 7:56definitely 2 days possible. It charges
- 7:59up relatively fast, too. Not as fast as
- 8:02the Series 11, but still you can get 80%
- 8:05of juice in 45 minutes. So just have it
- 8:10on to track your sleep during the night.
- 8:12Pop it on the charger first thing in the
- 8:14morning, then put it back on when you're
- 8:16ready to leave. Pretty easy. I think the
- 8:18Apple Watch experience as a whole is
- 8:21pretty fleshed out now. It does feel
- 8:23like a very nice companion device to the
- 8:26iPhone. And it's a great idea to have
- 8:29one. Even if it's not a great idea to
- 8:31spend $400 on a say series 11, I think
- 8:34that the Apple Watch SE3
- 8:37is just enough to give you that core
- 8:39Apple experience, enhance your
- 8:42interactions and use of the iPhone, and
- 8:45sprinkle some useful health services on
- 8:47top like sleep apnea notifications,
- 8:50nightly [music] temperature tracking,
- 8:52the activity rings to motivate you to
- 8:55move more, and the full Apple fitness
- 8:58platform. as such the sleep quality
- 9:00tracking and of course the helpful crash
- 9:03and fall detection. It's not perfect,
- 9:06but whatever gripes I have with the
- 9:08cheap SE3, I have with the bigger models
- 9:11as well. Now, if you're more serious
- 9:13about health tracking, you should
- 9:15graduate to a series 11 or a
- 9:18discounted/refurbished
- 9:20series 9 at the very least. You will get
- 9:24the new thin design and all the features
- 9:26of a series 11 for less money. That's
- 9:29it. The sub and like buttons are over
- 9:31there and I'm going over there. Bye.
