  22. 1:30in talking about the latest killing of
  23. 1:35Iranian general Qasem Soleimani and how
  24. 1:39the action from both sides Republican
  25. 1:44and Democrats and how people justify a
  26. 1:47killing of a government official on a
  27. 1:50peaceful mission I've been and meet our
  28. 1:53guest today welcome in Raleigh she is a
  29. 1:57retired FBI special agent and local
  30. 2:01legal counselor also she was 9/11
  31. 2:05whistleblowers you've been so active as
  32. 2:08far as anti-war and reaction to the
  33. 2:12illegal killing of a government official
  34. 2:16tell us a little bit about the anti-war
  35. 2:20movement in this country and the fact no
  36. 2:25matter who this anti-war movements not
  37. 2:27long time ago and stronger but we still
  38. 2:31have war perpetual Wars that's right if
  39. 2:34you go all the way back to the founding
  40. 2:36of the of the United States and of
  41. 2:39course the first war to break away from
  42. 2:40the Empire we broke we fought against a
  43. 2:43British Empire to get freedom but at the
  44. 2:46same time the United States was fighting
  45. 2:48the indigenous Native Americans the
  46. 2:50Indian
  47. 2:51in order to gain territory eventually
  48. 2:53they fought the the Spanish they fought
  49. 2:57them that they took over Hawaii they
  50. 3:00took over the Philippines the United
  51. 3:01States has been on an expansionist role
  52. 3:05imperialism for a long long time I
  53. 3:08really only got smart about all of this
  54. 3:11after 9/11 and so when you do want a
  55. 3:14part of all of this I know you won't
  56. 3:15okay well of yours we all were we were
  57. 3:17born into it we had no choice very very
  58. 3:20few people for instance know the history
  59. 3:21of World War one
  60. 3:22you know because why that's a good law a
  61. 3:25hundred and three years ago but when I
  62. 3:28just looked it up because I was going to
  63. 3:29talk about the Espionage Act of 1917 you
  64. 3:33know what I found out that Woodrow
  65. 3:35Wilson push to have it was a president
  66. 3:37at the time at the time he had promised
  67. 3:40the United States he would not take them
  68. 3:42to war about that Europe was in and he
  69. 3:45pushed to have the Espionage Act of 1917
  70. 3:48passed just a couple of weeks before he
  71. 3:51entered why because he had promised his
  72. 3:53own supporters that he would not go to
  73. 3:56war and he wanted to censor the press
  74. 3:59and so the law that was proposed would
  75. 4:02have been contained overt censorship of
  76. 4:06the press and that was what Lincoln did
  77. 4:08during in the Civil War he had his
  78. 4:10generals ordered to round up editors so
  79. 4:13when we talk about yes during the Civil
  80. 4:15War editors were imprisoned if they
  81. 4:17criticized Lincoln or the Union sound
  82. 4:19like Egypt it yeah
  83. 4:20they sold it so exactly right so there
  84. 4:22is this history of powerful people
  85. 4:25wanting to go to war a lots of other
  86. 4:28people who see the downside who see the
  87. 4:31cost to themselves who are opposed to it
  88. 4:33and even the press many times suppressed
  89. 4:36so I'll talk more specifically about
  90. 4:38post 9/11 we're at 18 and a half years
  91. 4:41now of war perpetual they call it
  92. 4:44perpetual war endless war long war and
  93. 4:47the the militarists the people who write
  94. 4:51their their thesis is that are at West
  95. 4:54Point justified when they noticed that
  96. 4:57during the Vietnam War okay so what they
  97. 5:00were learning from they learned the
  98. 5:01lessons of Vietnam
  99. 5:03and you know after eight nine years
  100. 5:05initially everyone was very much in
  101. 5:08favor of going to war in Vietnam the
  102. 5:10lies and the propaganda worked
  103. 5:12JFK initially then Johnson and everyone
  104. 5:15believed it everyone was ok with it you
  105. 5:18get to about 1967 or 1968 and now people
  106. 5:22are learning the truth through
  107. 5:24whistleblowers through Cronkite Cronkite
  108. 5:27actually said this war is you know
  109. 5:29unwinnable and now people are starting
  110. 5:31to learn the military then said thinks
  111. 5:34you know people in the military who are
  112. 5:35drafted get mad they say what are we
  113. 5:39doing we no we're just fighting for no
  114. 5:40reason and they learn the truth as well
  115. 5:42so you see the anti-war movement during
  116. 5:46Vietnam growing growing growing until
  117. 5:50they ended it frankly the the press and
  118. 5:54the anti-war movement were able to put
  119. 5:56enough pressure on Nixon to end the war
  120. 5:58now if you're in the military if you are
  121. 6:02a war profiteer defense contractor you
  122. 6:06do not want that to happen again
  123. 6:08so what are the ways you keep that from
  124. 6:10happening this time number one you get
  125. 6:12rid of the draft and so we have an
  126. 6:15all-volunteer which really is a poverty
  127. 6:17draft that is preying on poor people who
  128. 6:21really you know they say well I can make
  129. 6:22more money in the military than I can
  130. 6:24working at McDonald's etc and they try
  131. 6:27to get education that way I don't fault
  132. 6:29the people who are being sucked into the
  133. 6:32portal other day that the the military
  134. 6:35is recruiting students that they have
  135. 6:38tons of debts yes when after them that's
  136. 6:41right very nefarious ways one of the
  137. 6:44ways they recruit actually to is to get
  138. 6:46people addicted to violent video games
  139. 6:48and there's been a lot of blowback from
  140. 6:50that they the army used to have little
  141. 6:52sites where they got young kids in to
  142. 6:55play violent video games to try to
  143. 6:57recruit them for the military go visit
  144. 6:59them and of course one of the kids that
  145. 7:01became addicted to violent video games
  146. 7:03was the Newtown shooter that killed the
  147. 7:05first graders so this has had all kinds
  148. 7:07of cost but people don't care and nobody
  149. 7:10really understands that you know because
  150. 7:12the propaganda the other way that they
  151. 7:15have made
  152. 7:16perpetual I wrote an article called
  153. 7:18recipe for perpetual war
  154. 7:21you can google choline Raleigh I
  155. 7:23co-wrote it and you can find it the
  156. 7:25other way is that we don't pay taxes
  157. 7:27specifically to pay for the war so we
  158. 7:31went from under Bush five trillion
  159. 7:33dollars of national debt to 10 trillion
  160. 7:35about 910 trillion under Obama we almost
  161. 7:38doubled that from 19 trillion he got up
  162. 7:41he surprised and no one whose price
  163. 7:43that's right they all what a joke
  164. 7:45actually they want to resend that peace
  165. 7:47prize now they've talked about it 18 to
  166. 7:4919 trillion and now Trump we are over 23
  167. 7:53trillion national debt heading to 30
  168. 7:55trillion debt and the reason is we
  169. 7:58aren't paying for the wars
  170. 7:59there's no additional taxes prior Wars
  171. 8:02once you raise taxes guess what people
  172. 8:05people people start thinking what are we
  173. 8:07what are we paying all this money for
  174. 8:09but now we're just tacking it on to the
  175. 8:11debt and the very last way that they've
  176. 8:14made war perpetual is they relied now
  177. 8:16that when they started they had
  178. 8:18quote-unquote boots on the ground in
  179. 8:20Iraq but about 4500 some
  180. 8:23young military got people got killed and
  181. 8:27same same in Afghanistan a couple
  182. 8:29thousand loans enough now they went to
  183. 8:32aerial bombing not not just drones but
  184. 8:36Libya I was actually you know bombed it
  185. 8:38was so so it's aerial bombing and when
  186. 8:41you are bombing from the grunts from the
  187. 8:43sky you don't even see the bodies you
  188. 8:45don't see it just like dropping the
  189. 8:47nuclear bombs so these three things now
  190. 8:49have made war perpetual and over these
  191. 8:53eighteen and a half years lots of people
  192. 8:55were initially against the wars you know
  193. 8:57there were millions of people marching
  194. 8:59before the Iraq war when I wrote the
  195. 9:01op-ed that made the front page of the
  196. 9:03New York Times there were you know quite
  197. 9:05a few people that agreed with that that
  198. 9:07has now slowly diminished over eighteen
  199. 9:10and a half years because nobody sees the
  200. 9:13cost here they know what you're just
  201. 9:15killing foreigners you know I keep
  202. 9:17writing all we've killed millions their
  203. 9:19own people you have millions of
  204. 9:21foreigners and then the refugees and the
  205. 9:23people drowning in the Mediterranean so
  206. 9:26so the problem here you know one
  207. 9:29you know there is about four million
  208. 9:30people brown people been killed since
  209. 9:349/11 you know give and take and they in
  210. 9:36for different reasons - like in Yemen
  211. 9:38the water supply is a cause of war and
  212. 9:44and you incite proxies you incite
  213. 9:47different religious groups to fight each
  214. 9:50other and so sometimes it's not the
  215. 9:52military killing the people it's
  216. 9:54actually the infighting but who started
  217. 9:56it but they use this antonucci are so
  218. 9:59listen well and inciting it because the
  219. 10:02United States arms them so in Syria the
  220. 10:05United States was arming even but maybe
  221. 10:08linked people issue with the people here
  222. 10:11that they have access to informations
  223. 10:13more than in Egypt or Saudi Arabia they
  224. 10:17don't they still support any percent
  225. 10:20usual support the war the corporate
  226. 10:22media dominates the message and they are
  227. 10:26all across the board people cite Fox but
  228. 10:29it's MSNBC it's all of the BBC all of
  229. 10:33the BBC NPR yeah I mean Public
  230. 10:36Television
  231. 10:37I watched public television at night and
  232. 10:39it's really a lot of military or is the
  233. 10:42answer every night insidious and then
  234. 10:44somebody come in your face and say we
  235. 10:46need to kill this guy there will be an
  236. 10:47expert just applause the answer you know
  237. 10:51I just listen to somebody an expert
  238. 10:54general say that killing sulemani will
  239. 10:57bring peace no disability yet and he was
  240. 11:00a bad guy he was a bad god but if we're
  241. 11:03gonna kill bad guys they were gonna be a
  242. 11:06yeah everybody's done something wrong
  243. 11:09but you know you have let's go to the
  244. 11:14last killing of general Soleimani now a
  245. 11:18lot of spin a lot of interpretation and
  246. 11:21why we did it and somebody was making a
  247. 11:24legal case this guy killed America and
  248. 11:27this guy and they use legal
  249. 11:30interpretation why the American have the
  250. 11:33right to kill somebody that he actually
  251. 11:36killed American he's about to kill
  252. 11:38America and all of that so we are the
  253. 11:41legal community when when
  254. 11:43they are kind of have the illegal
  255. 11:46coverage of unfortunately unfortunately
  256. 11:50if you read the memos after 9/11 setting
  257. 11:54up this false pretext for perpetual war
  258. 11:56there were dozens of memos written by
  259. 11:59John you were not really reviewed by
  260. 12:01anyone else except one senior one senior
  261. 12:05attorney who actually teaches now at st.
  262. 12:07Thomas Delahunty he reviewed some of
  263. 12:10them in the in those memos he said since
  264. 12:13we are now at war the president has all
  265. 12:16power its Imperial War presidency powers
  266. 12:19and that trumps international law so for
  267. 12:24instance he can write we can torture now
  268. 12:26I don't care about the Geneva
  269. 12:28Conventions he actually wrote that we
  270. 12:31could end most of the treaties all those
  271. 12:33are in secret memos now no one knew that
  272. 12:35by about those because they were all
  273. 12:37secret but there's dozens of memos and I
  274. 12:40will say one more thing that even
  275. 12:41affects Americans okay it's more than
  276. 12:43international law he actually wrote that
  277. 12:46constitutional law for instance the
  278. 12:48freedom of the press and the First
  279. 12:50Amendment because he knew this goes
  280. 12:52right back to the First World War he
  281. 12:54said that freedom that First Amendment
  282. 12:55rights would no longer apply that we
  283. 12:59were at war he wrote these in September
  284. 13:01of 2000 or okto early October this guy's
  285. 13:04name again and he's a known you why oh
  286. 13:07okay I want the guy listen Thomas
  287. 13:10his name's Delahunty and he's he signed
  288. 13:14off on I don't know if even read him
  289. 13:16either
  290. 13:16in a Catholic yes yes we protested we
  291. 13:21protested him years ago there's a
  292. 13:24there's a movie out by the way will be
  293. 13:26shown at 4200 Cedar Avenue which is the
  294. 13:30WAM office Monday - come on diem at 7:00
  295. 13:34o'clock were showing the report and the
  296. 13:37report is the whole story of the staffer
  297. 13:40who uncovered all of the torture and he
  298. 13:43got feinstein to write this long
  299. 13:45thousands of Wordsworth's pages well you
  300. 13:48know i always joke or not joking but i
  301. 13:50seriously that there is no money
  302. 13:53most of money in war more makes money
  303. 13:55too
  304. 13:56but there is no money from peace and and
  305. 14:00I think you have an interesting take on
  306. 14:02that well your that's correct as
  307. 14:04Eisenhower warned the people that were
  308. 14:07making money from war the defense cut
  309. 14:09they caught we call them defense but
  310. 14:11they're not defense they are war
  311. 14:13contractors they're war profiteers
  312. 14:15defense from what when they killed
  313. 14:17general Soleimani the the CEOs of
  314. 14:23Lockheed and Northrop and Boeing and
  315. 14:26Raytheon they made hundreds of thousands
  316. 14:29of dollars in one day in one day just
  317. 14:32because of that and so it'll stop going
  318. 14:34up their stock went up and they
  319. 14:36overnight made so much money it's
  320. 14:38incredibly articles about it all
  321. 14:39overnight they made money so of course
  322. 14:42that's true and but as a whole war
  323. 14:45actually depletes the country's our
  324. 14:47reserves you know if I don't know the
  325. 14:50exact figures but for the for the cost
  326. 14:52of sending one soldier to Afghanistan we
  327. 14:55could we could pay for 20 teachers so
  328. 14:57it's really hurt economics if you look
  329. 15:00at the whole thing
  330. 15:00it's actually really depleting and
  331. 15:02that's where this 23 trillion dollars of
  332. 15:05debt now is that which is making the
  333. 15:07United States in a very precarious
  334. 15:09situation because if the reserve
  335. 15:11currency the dollar Social Security
  336. 15:13petrodollar is is able to be defeated
  337. 15:17that 23 trillion becomes a huge
  338. 15:20liability and our money won't be worth
  339. 15:22anything this paper money that we have
  340. 15:24that's another reason why the United
  341. 15:27States is continuing war it's another
  342. 15:29reason why they're bolstering Saudi
  343. 15:30Arabia even though Saudi Arabia had ties
  344. 15:33into 9/11 even though they've done of
  345. 15:36course the killing of khashoggi all of
  346. 15:39these Yemen I mean all these terrible
  347. 15:41things the woman drive that's good
  348. 15:42enough one of the reasons why we're
  349. 15:45siding with Saudi Arabia and for
  350. 15:47instance killing you know doing the war
  351. 15:49is because of the petro dollar and so
  352. 15:52this I'm trying to explain how in a
  353. 15:55larger sense war is not good
  354. 15:58another example here is China China has
  355. 16:01been able in the past few decades to
  356. 16:03keep itself out of war and you see this
  357. 16:06rise economic rise where
  358. 16:08they can put their money into building
  359. 16:12roads and education you know in terms of
  360. 16:15all the things that you know healthcare
  361. 16:17even for that matter all the things that
  362. 16:19they can put their money into that
  363. 16:21actually produce more economic power
  364. 16:23that they produce my sort of a few
  365. 16:26thousand ZCO bombs actually do not
  366. 16:29produce economic women once you draw a
  367. 16:31bomb or you tank that doesn't recycle in
  368. 16:34an economy but when you make something
  369. 16:36like on could exactly values welcome
  370. 16:39thank you so much for all those pleasure
  371. 16:41to come here every time I have you here
  372. 16:44after the show I want to go unless the
  373. 16:46Nama in the military on fire between the
  374. 16:50demonstrators
  375. 16:54a three-hour parade takes the
  376. 16:56demonstrators across the Potomac on
  377. 16:58their way to the Pentagon
  378. 16:59crowd estimated at about 50,000 persons
  379. 17:02who was a loose confederation of some
