- 0:12prosecution seemed deemed to take my
- 0:15life from me 58 years old Hinton lived
- 0:19more than half his life inside a cage
- 0:21home and Correctional Facility in
- 0:22Southern Alabama today he's seeing and
- 0:25experiencing things for the first time
- 0:27in decades oh my goodness
- 0:32so he is welcomed home a party in his
- 0:35honor hosted by the Equal justice
- 0:37initiative led by attorney Brian
- 0:39Stevenson and his team of attorneys who
- 0:41fought for decades to win hinton's
- 0:43Freedom thank you for giving me my life
- 0:46back just being here as a team you can
- 0:52say that you got an inome man off there
- 0:55his nightmare began in
- 0:561985 Ronald Reagan was President back to
- 0:59the the future was a box office hit and
- 1:02under the cover of darkness two
- 1:04Birmingham restaurant managers were shot
- 1:06dead at closing time just months apart a
- 1:09third victim another man who survived
- 1:11the shooting and helped identify
- 1:1329-year-old Anthony Ray Hinton as the
- 1:16killer you're a free man now what does
- 1:18that mean to you it mean everything I
- 1:20mean uh you never think about your
- 1:24freedom until it's taken away from you
- 1:27you couldn't put a price tag on it my
- 1:30all the back already so much about the
- 1:32world has changed but the greatest still
- 1:34is a world without his mother she died
- 1:37while he was locked away it don't get no
- 1:39lower for
- 1:41me I'm not a shame of I'm proud of

- 1:50together now a band kind of hate to see
- 1:52it in this shape it's his first time
- 1:55there since the night it was all taken
- 1:57away this is the room where hinton's
- 1:59mother kept her 38 caliber revolver
- 2:01police said it was the murder weapon
- 2:03hinton's court appointed public defender
- 2:05hired a supposed ballistics expert to
- 2:07dispute the prosecution's claim about
- 2:09the murder weapon a persuasive expert he
- 2:12was not so his ballistics expert was
- 2:15blind in one eye yes that's correct he
- 2:17had to ask how to turn on the machine he
- 2:20couldn't see it he had to ask somebody
- 2:23please help me so when he put him on the
- 2:25stand as my
- 2:28witness they Cru ified him I
- 2:32said they going to find me guilty Hinton
- 2:36was sentenced to death He was ordered to
- 2:38spend the remainder of his life in
- 2:39prison living inside a 5 by7 cell pretty
- 2:43much sleep in a fetal position because
- 2:45you feet hang over the bed you only have
- 2:48a bed that is mounted to the wall on a
- 2:51toilet and that's what I lived in for 30
- 2:54years they took my 30s my 40 my 50 but
- 3:00what they couldn't take was my
- 3:10joy I couldn't do a thing about the
- 3:13years but I could control my joy 53
- 3:18inmates were executed at Holman while
- 3:20Hinton was on death row my Dogers M with
- 3:23being seen so many people that I got to
- 3:25know be executed he languished in prison
- 3:29for years before his case reached
- 3:30appeals court I was had never been so
- 3:32convinced of someone's innocence than I
- 3:34had in Mr hinton's Case no one asked
- 3:37them judge suel CA was one of those
- 3:39appell at court judges who believed his
- 3:41story there was no incriminating
- 3:43evidence he didn't have anything from
- 3:44the robbery there were no fingerprints
- 3:46this is extremely unusual his appeal was
- 3:49denied but his team kept fighting we had
- 3:52exhausted every state court appeal and
- 3:54it was the United States Supreme Court
- 3:55that finally intervene the result was a
- 3:57new trial the break Hinton had been
- 3:59waiting for but just a few weeks ago the
- 4:02state of Alabama dropped the case after
- 4:04a new look of the evidence could not
- 4:06match the bullets to the
- 4:07gun and Hinton was
- 4:11released since I've been locked up for
- 4:1430 years and finances is
- 4:17tight a
- 4:19slight I don't sense any bitterness why
- 4:22is that bitterness kills the
- 4:26soul
- 4:27I cannot hate
- 4:30because my bible teach me not to hate
- 4:33I've seen hate at is worse what would it
- 4:37profit me to hate I want you to know
- 4:41there is a God he sit high but he looks
- 4:44low Lord he will destroy but yet he will
- 4:47defend and he defend
- 4:58me e
