Animals Aren't Supposed to Talk — Transcript

- 0:05The Navajo are a tribe of Native
- 0:07Americans whose earliest settlements lay
- 0:09in the southwestern United States,
- 0:12primarily in what are now the states of
- 0:14New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona. Along
- 0:17with their own ancient tribal war
- 0:19history, throughout the Pacific Island
- 0:21campaigns, Navajo men proudly fought
- 0:23alongside fellow Americans during the
- 0:25Second World War. The now famed Navajo
- 0:28code talkers and their unusual language
- 0:31was used to great effect for the
- 0:33encryption of American radio
- 0:35transmissions which confounded the
- 0:37Japanese cryptologists who intercepted
- 0:39them. But the Navajo people also speak
- 0:42about things which confound the rest of
- 0:45us.
- 0:49They tell stories about strange things
- 0:52that creep and crawl around the wild
- 0:55desert expanses and forests of the
- 0:58Americas.
- 0:59Legends which persist until the present
- 1:02day. One such popular Navajo legend is
- 1:06about evil witches, something the native
- 1:09people call ye nadloshi.
- 1:12With it he goes on all fours.
- 1:15Skinwalkers.
- 1:17Such a creature is considered half
- 1:18person and half animal. It starts as a
- 1:22medicine man or woman who once used
- 1:24their powers of healing for good, but
- 1:26for some reason they turn to evil, to
- 1:29murder, and to eating the flesh of their
- 1:32human victims. And so they are cursed.
- 1:36They are believed to be immortal. The
- 1:39only way to destroy one is to kill them
- 1:41in their animal form. Not only do skinw
- 1:44walkers bring pain and suffering to
- 1:47their victims, but they can crawl inside
- 1:49a person's mind and control them, they
- 1:52can make them hear things and see things
- 1:56that are not really there. Or so the
- 1:59legends go. But while the Navajo people
- 2:02continue to pass down stories about
- 2:04encounters their ancestors have had with
- 2:06these creatures, it seems there are more
- 2:08than a handful of American service
- 2:10members who, while out training in the
- 2:13field, have likewise come face to face
- 2:15with something they could not explain.
- 2:20Something that terrified them out of
- 2:21their wits.
- 2:23Something that looked like an animal but
- 2:26spoke like a human.
- 2:30This is the smoke pit and these are
- 2:34their stories about skinw walkers.
- 2:47Before we enter into the stories from
- 2:49our military service members, it might
- 2:51help our understanding of these
- 2:52creatures to hear one story that is told
- 2:55by the Navajo people. Modern times may
- 2:58have quelled these superstitious fears
- 2:59that many native people once held,
- 3:02always cautious of certain creatures,
- 3:04always on the lookout for skinw walkers.
- 3:07But it was once, if not still is, a very
- 3:10real fear. Navajo parents would warn
- 3:13their children that skinwalkers could
- 3:15look like anyone else during the day,
- 3:18then at night transforming into
- 3:19creatures with glowing eyes.
- 3:22Skinwalkers appear during the day, too,
- 3:25they said, waiting and watching for
- 3:28their victims. They could run like the
- 3:30wind and easily track down a person.
- 3:34One Arizona Navajo man tells us a story
- 3:36that took place about a 100 years ago.
- 3:40This man's name is Art Tracy Jr., and
- 3:42his story was published by fellow
- 3:44natives from the Panka and Tongva tribes
- 3:47in a book they subtitled Chilling
- 3:49American Indian Stories.
- 3:52As his mother relayed the story to him,
- 3:54in the 1920s or 30s, there was a Navajo
- 3:57man working as a ranch hand for a
- 4:00wealthier Navajo landowner somewhere
- 4:02around the western part of the Navajo
- 4:04reservation in Tuba City, Arizona. One
- 4:08day, he decided to ask his employer for
- 4:10a few days of leave to go and visit his
- 4:12family where they lived in New Mexico.
- 4:15Riding horseback through desert canyons,
- 4:17meases, and open range, he eventually
- 4:20stopped along his route to rest for a
- 4:22while. While paused, staring out at the
- 4:25desert expanse around him, he suddenly
- 4:27spotted an old mangy coyote sitting on
- 4:30top of a hill not too far away. The man
- 4:33pulled out his rifle, took aim, and
- 4:35fired, watching the coyote drop to the
- 4:38ground. He then walked over to inspect
- 4:40his kill.
- 4:42Reaching the top of the hill, he was
- 4:44shocked to find not the body of a
- 4:46coyote, but a young Navajo man with long
- 4:50hair, at least part of a young man. And
- 4:54he was dead.
- 4:56The top half of his body was human, the
- 4:59skin painted with designs, and his lower
- 5:02half that of an animal covered in the
- 5:05fur of a coyote.
- 5:08Now horrified, the man who shot him
- 5:10looked around, wondering what to do.
- 5:13Spotting a deep crevice along the
- 5:14canyon's edge, he dragged the creature's
- 5:16body to the cliff and hurled it over the
- 5:18edge. His fear growing, he then mounted
- 5:21back up and rode his horse near to
- 5:23death, riding even past nightfall,
- 5:26trying to put as much distance between
- 5:27himself, the creature, and the place
- 5:30where he killed it.
- 5:33Finally crossing the Chuska Mountains,
- 5:35he reached his relatives home just past
- 5:37Shiprock, New Mexico. After recounting
- 5:40his story to them, they too experienced
- 5:43an unnatural fear. "You must never go
- 5:46back to your employer," they told him.
- 5:48"You have to stay here. The relatives of
- 5:51the skinwalker will be looking for
- 5:53answers, and they'll be out looking for
- 5:57you.
- 6:04It stands to reason that a creature that
- 6:06takes the form of a wild animal would
- 6:08more than likely be encountered in the
- 6:11wild. It should be no coincidence, then
- 6:13that the majority of these following
- 6:14stories take place in the wild, unckempt
- 6:18regions of various military
- 6:19installations, what service members
- 6:21would call the field. After all,
- 6:24military bases are often built on the
- 6:26more undesirable expanses of undeveloped
- 6:29land, those which are often still
- 6:31covered in dense forests or vast
- 6:33expanses of unusable desert. These
- 6:36portions of land are therefore only
- 6:38differentiated from wildland by the long
- 6:41fence surrounding the base's perimeter,
- 6:43maybe with a mess of barbed wire
- 6:45adorning the top. But a fence only keeps
- 6:48out law- abiding people. Animals and
- 6:51unexplained creatures with a mind of
- 6:54their own will always find a way around
- 6:57such trivial man-made barriers. This
- 7:00first military encounter would seem to
- 7:03verify that.
- 7:06They agreed not to tell their commander.
- 7:12You got any plans for this weekend?
- 7:14Well, I'll probably go see that new
- 7:16Rocky movie.
- 7:17There's another Rocky movie coming out.
- 7:19Yeah.
- 7:19Who's he fighting this time? Apollo's
- 7:21Kids,
- 7:22huh? No. Some bastard or something
- 7:26Russian. I think that looks all right.
- 7:29All right. You mind if I come see it
- 7:31with you?
- 7:32The girl just dumped me.
- 7:33Oh, again?
- 7:34Yeah, I get. Oh, jeez.
- 7:37Hey, get Hey, get your hands up.
- 7:39Damn.
- 7:40Sir, old man, you scared the out of
- 7:43me. Sir, get your hands in the air.
- 7:46Get your hands up.
- 7:48Do you have any idea where you're at
- 7:49right now, old man? I
- 7:51think there's something wrong with him.
- 7:53Either he's deaf or he's got some sort
- 7:55of mental problem. Sir, get your hands
- 7:58in the air.
- 8:00Hey, go ahead and call this in.
- 8:02Yeah, let me get it.
- 8:05HQ, this is Rover one. Come in. Over.
- 8:11HQ, this is Rover One.
- 8:13The following account was submitted to
- 8:15the curators of the Paranormal Scholar
- 8:17website by Stacy C on behalf of her
- 8:20uncle Bob R. My uncle Bob was in the
- 8:24Army. Last Thanksgiving, he got drunk
- 8:26and told us all a story that shocked me.
- 8:29It was around 1985, and he was still new
- 8:32to the army, only being about 3 years
- 8:34in. He was on patrol duty on a base in
- 8:37Arizona. It was late and he and another
- 8:40guy were walking along the fence line.
- 8:43Bob and the other guy were focused on
- 8:44looking out beyond the fence outside the
- 8:47base when they heard a sound behind
- 8:49them. The sound came from the inside
- 8:52from their side of the fence. When they
- 8:54turned around, they saw an old man
- 8:56dressed in buckskin with long hair and
- 8:59braids. Bob described it as being so
- 9:02gray that it almost glowed in the
- 9:04moonlight. The man was standing
- 9:07approximately 30 ft behind them. Both
- 9:09men drew their weapons as the old man
- 9:11was in a restricted area with warning
- 9:13signs all over the place. They could
- 9:15have shot him if they'd wanted to, but
- 9:17neither my uncle Bob nor his buddy
- 9:19wanted to shoot an old man. They figured
- 9:21that he must have Alzheimer's and had
- 9:23wandered into the base or something.
- 9:25After all, he wasn't threatening them
- 9:27and he appeared harmless. The men
- 9:29shouted to the old man, telling him he
- 9:31was in a restricted area and that he
- 9:34needed to put his hands in the air. Bob
- 9:36thought they'd walk him back to post and
- 9:38then call the local police department
- 9:39who would be able to get him back home.
- 9:42Bob tried to call in a report, but it
- 9:44was just static.
- 9:45Asking his friend to help, both he and
- 9:47Bob turned to tinker with the radio.
- 9:50Although they only looked away for half
- 9:52a second to quote my uncle,
- 9:54when they turned back,
- 9:56the old man was gone. Sir,
- 9:58in his place was a massive rabbit just
- 10:02sitting there watching them.
- 10:05That's what he said. That when he and
- 10:07his partner looked back up,
- 10:08the man had disappeared and there was
- 10:10this large rabbit sitting in his place.
- 10:13Sir,
- 10:14both men looked around, right, to left
- 10:16and back again to see where the old man
- 10:17had wandered off to,
- 10:19but he was nowhere to be seen.
- 10:21In that time, the rabbit took off
- 10:23towards the fence.
- 10:25Then again, they heard a noise behind
- 10:27them. And when they turned around, the
- 10:29same as last time, the old man was
- 10:31there.
- 10:32This time, however, he was now on the
- 10:35outside of the fence.
- 10:36How did he get over the fence?
- 10:38The fence was a good 8 to 10 ft tall.
- 10:40There was no way this old man could have
- 10:42jumped it
- 10:43to hell with this.
- 10:44Bob described how that sent him and his
- 10:47buddy off running, and they agreed not
- 10:50to tell their commander.
- 10:53Keep in mind that my uncle was drunk,
- 10:55but despite over 30 years having passed
- 10:58since that night, he still looked scared
- 11:01as hell when he told us that he had seen
- 11:05a skinw walker.
- 11:14Although Stacy doesn't mention the name
- 11:16of the base where her uncle's story took
- 11:18place, I was curious if the base in
- 11:20question might be rather obvious.
- 11:23Arizona has several military bases,
- 11:26three of which are army. Yuma proving
- 11:29grounds on the western border with
- 11:30California, Fort Wuka near the southern
- 11:33border with Mexico,
- 11:35and Camp Navajo which is up north near
- 11:39Flagstaff.
- 11:41Why do I have a sneaking suspicion that
- 11:43her uncle was stationed at the third
- 11:45one? The base was formerly named Navajo
- 11:48Army Depot in the early 80s and was and
- 11:51is still used as a munitions storage
- 11:54facility. Definitely seems like the kind
- 11:57of base that would call for routine
- 11:58perimeter fence patrols to ensure that
- 12:01no one unauthorized is entering into the
- 12:03base to steal something or cause damage.
- 12:06And as the name would indicate, the land
- 12:09it occupies lies very close to what
- 12:11remains of the Navajo's land and was
- 12:14undoubtedly occupied by the Navajo
- 12:16people in previous generations.
- 12:25Skinwalker guns.
- 12:31The following story comes from an
- 12:33unnamed Marine who spent time training
- 12:35in a desert wasteland that is otherwise
- 12:38known as Marine Corps base Camp
- 12:39Pendleton in Southern California. He
- 12:42submitted this story to Nick Orton who
- 12:44runs the Tales from the Grid Square
- 12:46project. I've personally spent quite a
- 12:48bit of time roaming the desert on that
- 12:50base, both day and night. Plenty of wild
- 12:53animals that a marine can run across at
- 12:54any time. There's rabbits, mice, deer,
- 12:57skunks, coyotes, few bobcats, quail,
- 13:01roadrunners, hawks, owls, and the more
- 13:04dangerous animals like the odd buffalo,
- 13:06rattlesnakes coiled around the base of
- 13:08shrubs, and even one marine in my group
- 13:10that was stalked during a nightand
- 13:12navigation course by a mountain lion.
- 13:16I've otherwise had my share of strange
- 13:17hallucinations out there, probably due
- 13:19to sleep deprivation and the mesmerizing
- 13:22effect of the green tinted night vision
- 13:24goggles, but to my knowledge, I'm the
- 13:26only one who saw those things. Whatever
- 13:29this marine and his buddies saw would
- 13:31arguably creep anybody out. He writes,
- 13:36"My squad's name is Skinwalkers, and
- 13:39there's a story behind it. A little over
- 13:41a year ago, we had a division level
- 13:43exercise called Steel Knight. My gun
- 13:46squad was attached to a platoon in a
- 13:48defense position above the Camp Horno
- 13:50combat town. While we were out there,
- 13:52one of my buddies told me how he had
- 13:54seen this skinwalker when he was
- 13:56younger. It creeped us all out when he
- 13:59said it was still following him to this
- 14:02day. We only had one boot in our squad,
- 14:05a marine just out of boot camp, I mean.
- 14:07So, me and my buddy took an hour of gun
- 14:09watch. So, my boot could get a little
- 14:11sleep. But instead of sleeping, it's 30
- 14:14minutes into this watch shift. So, maybe
- 14:16around 0130, give or take. And this boot
- 14:19keeps saying he's hearing weird noises
- 14:21like the sound that the predator makes,
- 14:24but says it sounds faster and louder.
- 14:28My other buddy that told us he had seen
- 14:29a skinwalker when he was younger, he
- 14:32then tells us that the one he saw made
- 14:34that same noise. So that freaks us out
- 14:38and we get real quiet and start
- 14:40listening for whatever this noise is.
- 14:43Sure enough, we hear it. This strange
- 14:46sound along with a screech and rustling
- 14:49in the brush that's coming from down the
- 14:52front side of the hill.
- 14:53I see something.
- 14:53We had a 13 Golf on the gun, which is a
- 14:55thermal optic. And I looked down the
- 14:57hill and saw this deer looking thing,
- 15:01but it was standing on two legs.
- 15:03What the hell is this? As soon as I
- 15:05caught sight of it, it then ran straight
- 15:07up the hill past our defense on the
- 15:08right flank.
- 15:10And then it dropped back down on all
- 15:11four legs and
- 15:13disappeared down the back side of this
- 15:15hill. My buddy Rick had a skeer, which
- 15:18is another type of thermal
- 15:20and he saw that thing, too. Since then,
- 15:23we came up with the name Skinwalker guns
- 15:25since we just say that's what it was and
- 15:28embrace it. And that's how our squad
- 15:31name came to be.
- 15:39Now, I'm not one to knock a good story,
- 15:41but I have seen deer stand up on their
- 15:43hind legs and walk. Usually when two
- 15:46bucks are fighting or some other
- 15:47instance where one deer is showing signs
- 15:50of aggression, possibly trying to reach
- 15:53the lower branches of a tree to eat the
- 15:55leaves. I've never seen one that made
- 15:57predator noises run up a hill before.
- 16:00Nor did I see it through thermals in the
- 16:02dead of night after one of my buddies
- 16:04had just told me a skinwalker story. All
- 16:07of that happening at the same time would
- 16:08make for a creepy experience in any
- 16:10case, but the following stories are not
- 16:13so easy to offer a rational explanation
- 16:16for.
- 16:17[Music]
- 16:21Hello.
- 16:22Tries to break right towards the nose of
- 16:25the plane and not jump.
- 16:27So jump master sees him going right and
- 16:30says, "Nope."
- 16:32He he reaches up, he grabs the overhead
- 16:34and then donkey kicks his ass right out
- 16:37the door.
- 16:39dude, I got I got out right after him
- 16:41and he is screaming
- 16:43the whole way.
- 16:48What a blue blazes mountain line sounds
- 16:52a hell of a lot
- 16:55more like a woman.
- 16:58This next account comes from an unnamed
- 17:00soldier who was likely a member of the
- 17:02California National Guard and was
- 17:04serving on a security detail during a
- 17:07massive wildfire. The Dixie fire of 2021
- 17:11was the single largest wildfire recorded
- 17:14in California history. It burned nearly
- 17:17a million acres of land and destroyed
- 17:19multiple communities in the area. And
- 17:21with the rapid spread and size of the
- 17:23growing fire, it would seem the
- 17:25California Guard was assisting local
- 17:27authorities in blocking roads,
- 17:29preventing civilians from driving into
- 17:31areas that were burning or were in the
- 17:33direct path of the fire. The fire
- 17:36undoubtedly disrupted a vast amount of
- 17:38wildlife in the area. But for this
- 17:40soldier and his group, they appear to
- 17:43have encountered something in the
- 17:45forest, that was in and of itself
- 17:48disturbing.
- 17:50He writes, "This happened during the
- 17:522021 Dixie fire in Northcow. My
- 17:55lieutenant, our driver, PFC Bravo, and
- 17:58myself were driving around making the
- 18:00rounds and checking on all our guys out
- 18:02at their checkpoints. We got to one
- 18:05where our guys were blocking a road and
- 18:07they had one of those generator lights.
- 18:09So, we stopped for a bit and we're all
- 18:11just standing around talking and making
- 18:13conversation
- 18:14when we started hearing a woman
- 18:16screaming. Startled the hell out of all
- 18:19six of us. My LT and I ready up our
- 18:22weapons as we take a few steps towards
- 18:24the woodline. We had been told that if
- 18:27we hear a woman screaming, it's usually
- 18:29a mountain lion attacking a deer or
- 18:32something like that, but this sounded
- 18:35close. And honestly,
- 18:38it just sounded too much like a woman
- 18:41screaming.
- 18:42So my LT yells out, "Hello."
- 18:48And I you not in his same exact
- 18:52voice. We hear back,
- 18:55"Hello."
- 18:57What the hell? Everybody back in the
- 18:59truck.
- 18:59This wasn't an echo at all. It came
- 19:02clear as day from the direction we heard
- 19:04the screaming. and it was his exact
- 19:07voice.
- 19:09We all immediately said, "Screw that."
- 19:12My crew and I got back in the truck and
- 19:14nope the hell out of there. After
- 19:16telling Specialist Sierra and his crew
- 19:18to stay in the truck and to combat lock
- 19:21all their doors.
- 19:24Pretty sure a skinwalker was out there
- 19:25trying to get one of us.
- 19:28Creepy as hell.
- 19:34[Music]
- 19:36As I mentioned earlier, these last few
- 19:38stories were shared with me by Nick
- 19:39Orton, a man who is currently serving in
- 19:41the US Army and has dedicated much of
- 19:44his free time to gathering these kinds
- 19:45of short and often spine- chilling
- 19:48stories from his fellow service members
- 19:50and veterans. If you haven't checked out
- 19:52his work yet, you are missing out on
- 19:54some creepy and fascinating stuff. And
- 19:57heads up, he's got a second book out
- 19:58now, Tales from the Grid Square, Volume
- 20:012. Combined, these two books account for
- 20:04nearly 500 bizarre reports from
- 20:06soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and
- 20:09coast guardsmen, as well as service
- 20:11members from foreign militaries. For me,
- 20:14there is just something both intriguing
- 20:16and yet highly unnerving when reading
- 20:19the accounts of dozens and dozens of
- 20:22servicemen and women from around the
- 20:24world who have never met each other. And
- 20:26yet, like these stories, they all report
- 20:29having these eerily similar and yet
- 20:33highly bizarre experiences during their
- 20:36time in the military. You can find
- 20:38Nick's books by following the links in
- 20:40the description section of this video,
- 20:42the link at the top of the screen here,
- 20:44or by searching for the books on Amazon.
- 20:47With that, here is one final skinwalker
- 20:50story from his collection, another
- 20:52unexplained tale from the grid square.
- 21:00I know you're there.
- 21:0821
- 21:11card for a parking problem.
- 21:20Here goes the radio.
- 21:23Considering the man telling this story
- 21:24has Navajo blood, I thought it might tie
- 21:27up these encounter stories nicely. Not
- 21:30to mention that his is by far one of the
- 21:33most bizarre.
- 21:34Another military police officer out on
- 21:37night shift seeing terrifying things in
- 21:41the woods. He writes,
- 21:45"I'm an MP at Quantico, and there's
- 21:47definitely been a couple of weird things
- 21:49I've seen on nights patrolling Westside.
- 21:52So, I've been at Quanico for about 2
- 21:54years as an MP. For those that don't
- 21:57know about Quanico, it's set up with two
- 21:59sides. Main side, where everything is,
- 22:01east of Interstate 95, and the
- 22:04appropriately named West Side, where
- 22:06they do TBS, the basic school for
- 22:08officers, and all the ranges. West Side
- 22:11is pretty damn massive. Like, I'm
- 22:14talking it would take two to three hours
- 22:15to drive around it. And it has all of
- 22:18these unused back roads and old
- 22:20cemeteries from homesteads dotting the
- 22:23landscape. Plenty of forgotten training
- 22:25areas, too, dating back to World War II.
- 22:28When I was on night shift, I always
- 22:30asked to be the roving unit out there
- 22:32cuz it would give me a chance to scout
- 22:34out places to hunt or fish on my off
- 22:36days. And being the only unit out there
- 22:39and being left alone was pretty nice to
- 22:42just skate or, you know, do my own thing
- 22:44over my 10-hour shift. Now, I'm not a
- 22:47stranger to the woods or to the outdoors
- 22:49or anything. I grew up running around
- 22:51the mountains for quail and deer in
- 22:53Southern California as a kid and spent a
- 22:56ton of nights out camping by myself in
- 22:58my teens. So, there's really not much
- 23:00out there in nature that freaks me out.
- 23:03But one night in about November, when
- 23:06the nights get really dark real fast, I
- 23:09was done posting Marines out on the
- 23:11gates and was heading up to a far-off
- 23:13training area. I had my tree stand and
- 23:16trail camera that I previously set up
- 23:18and wanted to go take a look to see if
- 23:20anything had been around. To get there,
- 23:22you have to drive about 30 minutes up
- 23:24one road and then another 15 until you
- 23:27hit a long dirt road that dissects that
- 23:30part of the base in half. And in this
- 23:32particular area, comms always sucks. So
- 23:35without a working radio, you're pretty
- 23:37much out there on your own. I parked my
- 23:40Durango on the offshoot. I grabbed my
- 23:42flashlight and started off heading into
- 23:45this creek bottom about a mile or so off
- 23:47the road. I've done this a ton of time,
- 23:49so I got there pretty fast. I grabbed
- 23:51the chip out of my trail cam and I hop
- 23:53up into my treeand to take a look at it
- 23:55and to kill some time. And not even 5
- 23:59minutes into flipping through pictures,
- 24:00most of which were of just some turkey
- 24:03that were hanging around, I hear
- 24:05someone, and I say someone because I
- 24:08thought it was a person, walking through
- 24:10the woods about 30 yards in front of me.
- 24:14Now, this is like the middle of the
- 24:15night on a training base, so a
- 24:18lieutenant who got lost doing nightland
- 24:20nav isn't out of the question. So, I'm
- 24:23thinking maybe this is my chance to mess
- 24:25with them from up in my stand. I quickly
- 24:27close my laptop and I turn off my
- 24:29flashlight and I I try looking out to
- 24:32see where they were and I hear them walk
- 24:35closer and closer and then stop about 20
- 24:39yards in front of me. And at that point,
- 24:42with the illum being fairly bright that
- 24:44night, I could make out the outline of
- 24:46what looked like a deer, which was kind
- 24:49of disappointing. So, I just stayed
- 24:52quiet to watch where he was heading so I
- 24:55wouldn't spook him.
- 24:58And all of a sudden, this thing starts
- 25:00bashing its head against a tree over and
- 25:04over and over and over until its entire
- 25:09skull cap was crushed and it was leaking
- 25:12blood and brain matter.
- 25:15Then this effing thing stands up on its
- 25:18hind legs and turns towards me as though
- 25:21it was staring directly at me, even with
- 25:25its eyes being clearly now useless.
- 25:30And then it spoke
- 25:32in the clearest tone I have ever heard
- 25:35in my life.
- 25:36I know you're there.
- 25:39My stomach dropped
- 25:44and I I was too frozen in fear to even
- 25:46think to draw my pistol. But then, as
- 25:50quickly as it had walked up, this thing
- 25:53dropped back down onto all fours
- 25:57and walked away.
- 26:01I waited about 10 minutes,
- 26:04shaking like a leaf, trying to calm down
- 26:09before
- 26:11I I left my laptop. I left everything. I
- 26:14just hauled ass out of there, got out of
- 26:15my stand, ran back to my patrol car, and
- 26:20I grabbed my shotgun,
- 26:22and I sat for the rest of the night in
- 26:26the lit parking lot of the MCX.
- 26:38It took about a month before I summed up
- 26:41the courage to go back uh grab my laptop
- 26:44and stuff I'd left there.
- 26:47And I went with a friend who I didn't
- 26:49tell what had happened, but I told him
- 26:51to bring his long gun as well.
- 26:54When I got there, I grabbed my stuff and
- 26:56I looked towards where the thing had
- 26:59been.
- 27:00And the tree was busted up with
- 27:02splinters everywhere and what looked
- 27:05like, you know, the bone fragments and
- 27:08and the mess, the blood scattered on the
- 27:11ground.
- 27:13Needless to say,
- 27:15I don't go out checking stuff in the
- 27:16middle of the night anymore, and I hunt
- 27:19on the complete opposite side of the
- 27:21base.
- 27:22And anytime I do need to go by there
- 27:24now, I always take a shotgun in
- 27:26condition one.
- 27:29I told my Navajo grandpa about this
- 27:32and he told me not to speak about it,
- 27:35but clearly uh I don't listen. Well, it
- 27:39it freaked the hell out of me. Got me so
- 27:42messed up to the point where I really
- 27:46I don't even like going in the woods
- 27:48anymore.
- 28:00As I say, I've seen deer do strange
- 28:03things, but talk.
- 28:08While the idea seems completely
- 28:10ludicrous.
- 28:12Navajo legend does say that skinw
- 28:14walkers possess the ability to enter a
- 28:18person's mind and make them hear and see
- 28:22things that aren't really there.
- 28:26So perhaps the voice he heard was only
- 28:29inside his own mind. It's no less
- 28:32terrifying either way.
- 28:35As for the animals strange behavior, if
- 28:37it indeed was just an animal, I found at
- 28:40least one more account online where a
- 28:43young man recalled seeing this kind of
- 28:46behavior while hunting with his
- 28:48grandfather. No idea where it took
- 28:50place, but the two men apparently
- 28:53watched a deer slam its head repeatedly
- 28:56into a rock until its antlers and skull
- 28:59were shattered. The animal then clumsily
- 29:02licking its own brain matter off of the
- 29:05rock before standing upright like a
- 29:09human, he said,
- 29:11and then walking into the nearby river
- 29:14and drowning itself.
- 29:17Both the young man and his grandfather
- 29:19were also terrified by the experience.
- 29:22It likewise kept them from wanting to
- 29:24return to the woods. And quite
- 29:27strangely, the story ends with the young
- 29:28man saying his grandfather moved to
- 29:31Florida shortly afterward for what he
- 29:35put in quotes as safety reasons. He
- 29:38makes no mention about having any
- 29:40suspicions about what this animal was
- 29:43other than just being a deer, acting
- 29:46strangely, but it does make you wonder
- 29:48what about the animals behavior by
- 29:50itself would have scared them so badly.
- 29:55Strange as it may seem, these are only a
- 29:57handful of the available skinwalker
- 29:59stories we have left to share. It would
- 30:02seem another particular Marine Corps
- 30:03installation in California likewise has
- 30:07no small amount of reported encounters
- 30:09with strange creatures roaming the
- 30:12desert backlands. And with all of the
- 30:15artifacts that have been found in the
- 30:17area, it would seem that the
- 30:19installation 29 Palms appears to have
- 30:22been built on what was once tribal land,
- 30:26a place where native people once
- 30:29undoubtedly lived and died,
- 30:32and quite possibly practiced
- 30:35dark magic.
- 30:38[Music]
- 30:47[Applause]
- 30:57Hey guys, thanks for sticking around for
- 30:59the credits. This video is being
- 31:01released just before Halloween of this
- 31:03year, so stay safe out there if you're
- 31:05going out with the kids. Otherwise, I
- 31:07don't have much to add here since I gave
- 31:09most of my own commentary during the
- 31:11episode, but one thing I did want to
- 31:13mention was about a man named Wally
- 31:15Brown. Wall-ally was born in New Mexico
- 31:18and his family can date their Navajo
- 31:20lineage back more than something like
- 31:22500 years. The Navajo more often refer
- 31:25to themselves as the Da, which simply
- 31:28translates to the people. His
- 31:31grandfather was a medicine man. And so
- 31:33from a young age, Wall-Ally's parents
- 31:35and tribal elders apparently saw that
- 31:37their son would also, you know, he had
- 31:39the traits to also become a great
- 31:41medicine man. And so Wall-E began
- 31:43training and participating in
- 31:45traditional Navajo ceremonies from a
- 31:47young age. Uh Wall-E and his family
- 31:49continue to maintain these traditions
- 31:51and have dedicated their lives to
- 31:53teaching others about them. And so in
- 31:56one of his videos, he has a YouTube
- 31:57channel, the Navajo Traditional
- 31:59Teachings YouTube channel. And in one of
- 32:01these videos, Wall-E speaks at length,
- 32:04albeit somewhat grudgingly due to the
- 32:06topic being very dark, about the Navajo
- 32:10people's traditional beliefs in the
- 32:11relationships between skinwalkers,
- 32:15demons, and what he referred to as the
- 32:18evil one. So, if you wanted to learn
- 32:21more about the strange, dark, and
- 32:22mysterious side of Navajo legends
- 32:24straight from him, or learn more about
- 32:26the Navajo people, I'd recommend
- 32:28checking out his channel. But while
- 32:30watching his videos during the research
- 32:32for this episode, I couldn't help but to
- 32:35notice that along with his handmade
- 32:37walking stick, his traditional headwear,
- 32:39and a turquoise necklace, Wall-E always
- 32:42wears a particular medallion around his
- 32:45neck, which bears an eagle globe and
- 32:48anchor and proudly displays the words
- 32:50United States Marine Corps. A quick bit
- 32:54of research told me that Wall-Ally
- 32:55himself, along with being a Navajo
- 32:57medicine man who is unbelievably
- 32:59well-versed in his people's ancient
- 33:01traditional teachings, he is also a
- 33:03Marine Corps veteran, having served in
- 33:06the 1960s. Um, it from what I gather, he
- 33:09never actually deployed to Vietnam, but
- 33:10remained states side. And from his own
- 33:13account, he said that he witnessed
- 33:15firsthand the hell of PTSD. And so in
- 33:19treating these wounded Marines in
- 33:21whatever his occupation was, uh, he
- 33:23tried to apply a lot of these Navajo
- 33:26medicine teachings, whether it be the
- 33:28chanting, prayers, uh, healing
- 33:31ceremonies that he would use to try to
- 33:33bring these wounded men back, their
- 33:35minds back to a state of of calm. So, I
- 33:38know a lot of his buddies went to
- 33:39Vietnam, but I'm not sure if he did. I
- 33:41don't think he did. Uh but anyway, from
- 33:43one Marine to another, I just wanted to
- 33:45acknowledge my sincere appreciation for
- 33:48his work and for sharing the Navajo
- 33:51peoples and his own incredible legacy
- 33:54with the rest of us. Um, of course, I
- 33:56have to give a shout out to my
- 33:58incredible patrons who you always see
- 34:00running in the credits here. Thank you
- 34:01guys so much as well as anybody who has
- 34:04greatly supported the channel by uh
- 34:06going to the website, picking up some
- 34:07merchandise, and certainly everybody
- 34:09who's ever sent me a story
- 34:10recommendation or a story submission.
- 34:13I'm still getting back to your emails.
- 34:15Just trying to knock out a few episodes
- 34:17here. Appreciate your patience on that.
- 34:19But otherwise, thank you guys so much.

- 34:34Overseas bases that I've been to um
- 34:37where I got to visit some really unique
- 34:40creepy places.
- 34:41There was I Yeah, you get that sense
- 34:43after doing all these stories that
- 34:44anywhere that there has been a lot of
- 34:47chaos and and violent death
- 34:49particularly. I I really
- 34:50Yeah. It's like those emotions like just
- 34:52kind of get locked in the environment in
- 34:54some strange way when they're that
- 34:56intense where the to the point where
- 34:57that person's losing their life.
- 34:59Yeah.
- 35:00That seems to have an effect on the
- 35:02environment. Right.
